1. Glycosyltransferase B4GALNT1 promotes immunosuppression in hepatocellular carcinoma via the HES4-SPP1-TAM/Th2 axis

Abstract: Abstract β-1,4-N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase I (B4GALNT1) is a key glycosyltransferase for gangliosides. Its aberrant expression has been observed in various cancers, and its potential roles in tumor immunity were suggested recently. However, how B4GALNT1 regulate tumor progression and tumor immunity remains largely unknown. In this study, we aimed to investigate the roles of B4GALNT1 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), particularly in reshaping the tumor immune microenvironment, and evaluate the potential beneficial effects of targeting B4GALNT1 in immunotherapy. Our data verified the aberrant upregulation of B4GALNT1 in HCC tumor tissues and tumor cells, which could be utilized as an independent prognostic factor and improve the predicting performance of traditional tumor node metastasis (TNM) system. We also demonstrated that B4GALNT1 increased the phosphorylation of Hes Family BHLH Transcription Factor 4 (HES4) via p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38)/ c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling in tumor cells, thus increasing the transcriptional activity of HES4, which upregulated the synthesis and secretion of secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1), modulated the composition of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and T helper type 2 (Th2) cells, and eventually reshaped the immunosuppressive microenvironment. In addition, silencing B4GALNT1 was proved to enhance the tumor-killing efficiency of the programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1)-targeting strategy in mouse model. In conclusion, this study evaluated B4GALNT1 as a prognostic predictor for HCC patients and revealed the mechanism of B4GALNT1 in microenvironmental remodeling, which extends the understanding of HCC progression and provides a novel auxiliary strategy for HCC immunotherapy.

Understanding learned helplessness in the context of Chinese law students can provide unique insights into the interaction of legal education, psychological health, and cultural influences, thereby contributing to a more nuanced understanding of learned helplessness.Methods: A total of 711 Chinese college students from two law schools participated in this study. The Learned Helplessness Scale (LHS) was translated into Chinese using forward and backward translation. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, and construct validity were conducted to assess the dimensionality of the Chinese version of the LHS (Chinese LHS).Results: The exploratory factor analysis indicated that the Chinese LHS has a four-factor structure consisting of 14 items, which accounted for 50% of the total variance. The subsequent confirmatory factor analysis further supported this four-factor structure. The internal consistency of the Chinese LHS was found to be medium to high, with Cronbach’s α values ranging from 0.63 to 0.87 for the subfactors, and 0.79 for the total scale. In addition, concurrent validity is also confirmed.Conclusion: The 14-item version of the Chinese LHS is a psychometric sound instrument for assessing learned helplessness among Chinese law school students.Keywords: learned helplessness scale, Chinese, adaptation, validation

3. Heat-killed Prevotella intermedia promotes the progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma by inhibiting the expression of tumor suppressors and affecting the tumor microenvironment

Abstract: Abstract Background Oral microbial dysbiosis contributes to the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Our previous study showed that Prevotella intermedia (P. intermedia) were enriched in the oral mucosal surface, plaque, and saliva of patients with OSCC. Intratumoral microbiome could reshape the immune system and influence the development of various tumors. However, the invasion status of human OSCC tissues by P. intermedia and the pathway through which intratumoral P. intermedia potentiates tumor progression remain unexplored. Methods P. intermedia in human OSCC or normal tissues was detected by FISH. A mouse OSCC cell line SCC7 was adopted to investigate the effects of heat-killed P. intermedia treatment on cell proliferation, invasion, and cytokine release by using CCK-8 assay, transwell invasion assay and ELISA. Moreover, we established a mouse transplanted tumor model by using SCC7 cells, injected heat-killed P. intermedia into tumor tissues, and investigated the effects of heat-killed P. intermedia on tumor growth, invasion, cytokine levels, immune cell infiltrations, and expression levels by using gross observation, H&E staining, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, mRNA sequencing, and transcriptomic analysis. Results Our results indicated that P. intermedia were abundant in OSCC and surrounding muscle tissues. Heat-killed P. intermedia promoted SCC7 cell proliferation, invasion and proinflammatory cytokine secretions, accelerated transplanted tumor growth in mice, exacerbate muscle and perineural invasion of OSCC, elevated the serum levels of IL-17A, IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ, and PD-L1, induced Treg cells M2 type macrophages in mouse transplanted tumors. The data of transcriptomic analysis revealed that heat-killed P. intermedia increased the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines while reduced the expression levels of some tumor suppressor genes in mouse transplanted tumors. Additionally, IL-17 signaling pathway was upregulated whereas GABAergic system was downregulated by heat-killed P. intermedia treatment. Conclusions Taken together, our results suggest that P. intermedia could inhibit the expression of tumor suppressors, alter the tumor microenvironment, and promote the progression of OSCC.

4. Is there a prognostic difference among stage I lung adenocarcinoma patients with different BRAF‐mutation status?

Abstract: Abstract Background The data of the prognostic role of V‐Raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B1 (BRAF) mutations in early‐stage lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) patients is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the proportion, clinicopathological features, and prognostic significance of patients with stage I LUAD carrying BRAF mutations. Methods We collected 431 patients with pathological stage I LUAD from cBioPortal for Cancer Genomics and 1604 LUAD patients tested for BRAF V600E and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations from Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital. Survival curves were drawn by the Kaplan–Meier method and compared by log‐rank test. Cox proportional hazard models, propensity‐score matching (PSM), and overlap weighting (OW) were performed in this study. The primary endpoint was recurrence‐free survival (RFS). Results The proportion of BRAF mutations was estimated at 5.6% in a Caucasian cohort. BRAF V600E mutations were detected in six (1.4%) patients in Caucasian populations and 16 (1.0%) patients in Chinese populations. Two BRAF V600E‐mutant patients were detected to have concurrent EGFR mutations, one for 19‐del and one for L858R. For pathological stage I LUAD patients, BRAF mutations were not significantly associated with worse RFS than wild‐type BRAF patients (HR = 1.111; p = 0.885). After PSM and OW, similar results were presented (HR = 1.352; p = 0.742 and HR = 1.246; p = 0.764, respectively). BRAF V600E mutation status also lacked predictive significance for RFS (HR, 1.844; p = 0.226; HR = 1.144; p = 0.831 and HR = 1.466; p = 0.450, respectively). Conclusions In this study, we demonstrated that BRAF status may not be capable of predicting prognosis in stage I LUAD patients. There is a need for more data to validate our findings.

Abstract: The intricate interplay between the human immune system and cancer development underscores the central role of immunotherapy in cancer treatment. Within this landscape, the innate immune system, a critical sentinel protecting against tumor incursion, is a key player. The cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) and stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway has been found to be a linchpin of innate immunity: activation of this signaling pathway orchestrates the production of type I interferon (IFN-α/β), thus fostering the maturation, differentiation, and mobilization of immune effectors in the tumor microenvironment. Furthermore, STING activation facilitates the release and presentation of tumor antigens, and therefore is an attractive target for cancer immunotherapy. Current strategies to activate the STING pathway, including use of pharmacological agonists, have made substantial advancements, particularly when combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors. These approaches have shown promise in preclinical and clinical settings, by enhancing patient survival rates. This review describes the evolving understanding of the cGAS-STING pathway’s involvement in tumor biology and therapy. Moreover, this review explores classical and non-classical STING agonists, providing insights into their mechanisms of action and potential for optimizing immunotherapy strategies. Despite challenges and complexities, the cGAS-STING pathway, a promising avenue for enhancing cancer treatment efficacy, has the potential to revolutionize patient outcomes.

Abstract: Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are important regulators of bone metabolism. In this study, lncRNA microarray analysis was used to identify differentially expressed lncRNAs in differentiated osteoclasts. lncRNA-Gm5532 is highly expressed during osteoclast differentiation. lncRNA-Gm5532 knockdown impairs osteoclast formation and bone resorption. Mechanistic experiments show that lncRNA-Gm5532 functions as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) and acts as a sponge for miR-125a-3p, which promotes TNF receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6) expression. miR-125a-3p mimics suppress osteoclast differentiation and TAK1/NF-κB/MAPK signaling. The miR-125a-3p inhibitor reverses the negative effects of siGm5532 on osteoclast differentiation. In summary, our study reveals that lncRNA-Gm5532 functions as an activator in osteoclast differentiation by targeting the miR-125a-3p/TRAF6 axis, making it a novel biomarker and potential therapeutic target for osteoporosis.

8. The potential roles of cigarette smoke-induced extracellular vesicles in oral leukoplakia

Abstract: Abstract Background The onset of oral leukoplakia (OLK), the most common oral lesion with a high risk of malignant transformation, is closely associated with the exposure of cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke is a complicated mixture of more than 4500 different chemicals including various oxidants and free radical, which contributes to the onset of immune and inflammatory response or even carcinogenesis. Recent studies have proved that the exposure of cigarette smoke leads to the onset and aggravation of many diseases via significantly changed the production and components of extracellular vesicles. The extracellular vesicles are membrane-enclosed nanosized particles secreted by diverse cells and involved in cell–cell communication because of their ability to deliver a number of bioactive molecules including proteins, lipids, DNAs and RNAs. Getting insight into the mechanisms of extracellular vesicles in regulating OLK upon cigarette smoke stimulation contributes to unravel the pathophysiology of OLK in-depth. However, evidence done on the role of extracellular vesicles in cigarette smoke-induced OLK is still in its infancy. Materials and methods Relevant literatures on cigarette smoke, oral leukoplakia and extracellular vesicles were searched in PubMed database. Conclusions In this review, we summarize the recent findings about the function of extracellular vesicles in the pathogenesis of cigarette smoke-induced diseases, and to infer their potential utilizations as diagnostic biomarkers, prognostic evaluation, and therapeutic targets of OLK in the future.

Abstract: Abstract Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection may activate viral-specific T cells to attack HBV infected hepatocytes and thus induce immune-related liver injury. Therefore, it is important to deeply understand the impacts of HBV infection on HCC immune microenvironment in order to better design effective immunotherapies for HBV+ (HBV infected) HCC patients. Here, We performed cytometry by time-of-flight (CyTOF) analyses to characterize the distinct immune compositions of HCC tumors, tumor borders, and their associations with HCC/HBV related clinical characteristics. We identified 31 distinct immune clusters and found significant associations between immune signatures with clinicopathological features of HCC. We further revealed the HBV infection had more effects on shaping immune compositions in tumor borders than in tumors, with the significant enrichment of HBV-specific PD-1+CD8+ tissue-resident memory T (TRM) cells in tumor borders of HBV+ patients. We confirmed this subset with a more exhausted phenotype and respond more actively under anti-PD-L1 treatment, suggesting its involvement in immune-related liver injury induced by ICB treatment to HBV+ HCC patients. Our study shows it may be necessary to consider antiviral prophylaxis for HBV+ HCC patients receiving ICB treatment.

Abstract: Abstract Ovarian cancer is a disease with increasing incidence worldwide, and there is an urgent need for chemotherapy and biological targeted therapy. Epithelial-mesenchymal transformation (EMT) is an important initiation stage for tumor cells to acquire the ability to invade and metastasize. A growing number of findings suggest that human Schlafen family member 5(SLFN5) plays a key role in malignancy. However, the role of SLFN5 in ovarian cancer cells has not been fully elucidated. Samples were collected from patients with ovarian cancer diagnosed in Hangzhou First People's Hospital, and the expression of SLFN5 was detected by fluorescence quantitative PCR. The relationship between SLFN5 expression and the progression and malignancy of ovarian cancer was analyzed by using the expression profile data from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. The mRNA expression levels of SLFN5 related upstream and downstream signaling pathways were studied by fluorescence quantitative PCR. Silencing SLFN5 was performed by siRNA transfection. The expression of SLFN5 and transfer-related proteins was examined by Western blot. Transwell and wound healing experiments investigated the migration and invasion ability of ovarian cancer cells. TCGA database analysis results showed that in the population with high SLFN5 expression, compared with the group with low SLFN5 expression, OS was worse (P = 0.011). SLFN5 silencing had a significant inhibitory effect on EMT and invasion movement of ovarian cancer cells. RT-PCR method was used to detect the mRNA changes of SLFN5 in ovarian cancer tissue and adjacent tissue. 11. Epidemiological investigation and management of a case of severe Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia

Abstract: ObjectiveTo identify causal factors of a case of severe Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia in Yangpu District and provide a scientific basis for effective prevention and control.MethodsBasic information and epidemiological data of the patient were collected through telephone interviews and field epidemiological surveys. Specimens from the patient， close contacts and the environment were collected for pathogen detection. Metagenomics next-generation sequencing （mNGS） was used to identify unknown pathogens.ResultsA 65-year-old male patient with a history of hypertension and diabetes was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of fatigue， poor appetite for a week， fever and cough for four days. A chest computer tomography （CT） scan showed scattered inflammation in the left lung with infiltration of multiple lobes. Blood gas analysis showed type I respiratory failure. The results of mNGS on the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of the patient indicated that he was infected with Chlamydia psittaci. Epidemiological investigation showed a clear history of avian exposure， with an incubation period of 30 days.ConclusionThis serious pneumonia is a zoonotic disease caused by Chlamydia psittaci. A clear history of avian exposure and the use of mNGS technology can help in the timely diagnosis of this disease.

12. Operation-Area-Constrained Adaptive Primary Frequency Support Strategy for Electric Vehicle Clusters

Abstract: Due to their fast response and strong short-term power throughput capacity, electric vehicles (EVs) are promising for providing primary frequency support to power grids. However, due to the complicated charging demands of drivers, it is challenging to efficiently utilize the regulation capacity of EV clusters for providing stable primary frequency support to the power grid. Accordingly, this paper proposes an adaptive primary frequency support strategy for EV clusters constrained by the charging-behavior-defined operation area. First, the forced charging boundary of the EV is determined according to the driver's charging behavior, and based on this, the operation area is defined. This ensures full utilization of the available frequency support capacity of the EV. An adaptive primary frequency support strategy of EV clusters is then proposed. The output power of EV is adaptively regulated according to the real-time distance from the EV operating point to the forced charging boundary. With the proposed strategy, when the EV approaches the forced charging boundary, its output power is gradually reduced to zero. Then, the rapid state-of-charge declines of EVs and sudden output power reductions in EV clusters caused by forced charging to meet the driver's charging demands can be effectively avoided. EV clusters can then provide sustainable frequency support to the power grid without violating the driver's charging demands. Simulation results validate the proposed operation-area-constrained adaptive primary frequency support strategy, which outperforms the average strategy in terms of stable output maintenance and the optimal utilization of regulation capacities of EV clusters.

Abstract: The fault current level analysis is important for bipolar direct current (DC) grids, which determines the operation and protection requirements. The DC grid topology significantly impacts the current path and then the fault current level of the grid, which makes it possible to limit the fault current by optimizing the grid topology. However, the corresponding discussion in the literature is indigent. Aiming at this point, the impact of grid topology, i.e., the connecting scheme of converters, on the pole-to-ground fault current in bipolar DC grids, is investigated in this paper, and the ground-return-based and metallic-return-based grounding schemes are considered, respectively. Firstly, the decoupled equivalent model in frequency domain for fault current analysis is obtained. Then, the impacts of converters with different distances to the fault point on the fault current can be analyzed according to the high-frequency impedance characteristics. Based on the analysis results, a simplified fault current index (SFCI) is proposed to realize the fast evaluation of impact of grid topology on the fault current level. The SFCI is then applied to evaluate the relative fault current level. Finally, the simulation results validate the model, the analysis method, and the SFCI, which can effectively evaluate the relative fault current level in a direct and fast manner.

Abstract: Solid-state batteries are currently developing into one of the most promising battery types for both the electrification of transport and for energy storage applications due to their high energy density and safe operating behaviour. The performance of solid-state batteries is largely determined by the manufacturing process, particularly in the production of electrodes. However, efficiently analysing the effects of key manufacturing features and predicting the mass loading of electrodes in the early stages of battery manufacturing remain a major challenge. In this study, a machine-learning-based approach is proposed to effectively analyse the importance of manufacturing features and accurately predict the mass loading of electrodes. Specifically, the importance of four key features during the manufacturing process of solid-state batteries is first quantified and analysed using a machine-learning-based method to analyse the importance of features. Then, four effective machine-learning-based regression methods, including decision tree, boosted decision tree, support vector regression and Gaussian process regression, are used to predict the mass loading of the electrodes in the mixing and coating stages. The comparative results show that the developed machine-learning-based approach is able to provide a satisfactory prediction of the electrode mass loading of a solid-state battery with 0.995 R2 while successfully quantifying the importance of four key features in the early manufacturing stages. Due to the advantages of its data-driven nature, the developed machine-learning-based approach can efficiently assist engineers in monitoring/predicting the electrode mass loading of solid-state batteries and analysing/quantifying the importance of manufacturing features of interest. This could benefit the production of solid-state batteries for further energy storage applications.

Abstract: Using a data sample of $(10087 \pm 44) \times {10^{6}}$ $J/{\psi}$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we search for the decays $\eta/\eta'\to e^+e^-\mu^+\mu^-$ and $\eta' \to \mu^+\mu^-\mu^+\mu^-$ via the radiative decays $J/{\psi}\to\gamma\eta$/$\gamma\eta'$. No excess of events over expected background is observed for any of the decays of interest. At 90% confidence level, we report the first upper limits on the branching fractions of $\eta' \to e^{+}e^{-}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ and $\eta' \to \mu^{+}\mu^{-}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ to be $ 1.75 \times {10^{-6}}$ and $5.28 \times {10^{-7}}$, respectively. In addition, we set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\eta \to e^{+}e^{-}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ to be $6.88 \times {10^{-6}}$, which improves the previous result by about two orders of magnitude., Comment: 11 pages

Abstract: Using $(2712.4\pm 14.3)\times10^6 \psi(3686)$ events collected by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, we present the first observations of the decays $\chi_{cJ}(J=0,1,2)\to p\bar{p}\eta\pi^{0}$. Their decay branching fractions are determined to be ${\cal B}(\chi_{c0}\to p\bar{p}\eta\pi^{0})=({2.41 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.19}) \times 10^{-4}$, ${\cal B}(\chi_{c1}\to p\bar{p}\eta\pi^{0})=({1.95 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.12}) \times 10^{-4}$, and ${\cal B}(\chi_{c2}\to p\bar{p}\eta\pi^{0})=({1.31 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.08}) \times 10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Abstract: Using $(2712.4\pm14.3)\times10^{6}$ $\psi(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the decay $\eta_c\to\gamma\gamma$ in $J/\psi\to\gamma\eta_c$ is observed for the first time. We determine the product branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\to\gamma\eta_c)\times\mathcal{B}(\eta_c\to\gamma\gamma)=(5.23\pm0.26_{\rm{stat.}}\pm0.30_{\rm{syst.}})\times10^{-6}$. This result is well consistent with the LQCD calculation $(5.34\pm0.16)\times10^{-6}$ from HPQCD in 2023. By using the world-average values of $\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\to\gamma\eta_c)$ and the total decay width of $\eta_c$, the partial decay width $\Gamma(\eta_c\to\gamma\gamma)$ is determined to be $(11.30\pm0.56_{\rm{stat.}}\pm0.66_{\rm{syst.}}\pm1.14_{\rm{ref.}})~\rm{keV}$, which deviates from the corresponding world-average value by $3.4\sigma$., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: An amplitude analysis of the Cabibbo-favored decay $D^+ \to K^-\pi^+\pi^+\pi^0$ is performed, using 7.93 $\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV. The branching fractions of the intermediate processes are measured, with the dominant contribution $D^+ \to \bar{K}^{*}(892)^0\rho(770)^+$ observed to have a branching fraction of $(4.15\pm0.07_{\rm stat.}\pm0.17_{\rm syst.})\%$. With the detection efficiency derived from the amplitude analysis, the absolute branching fraction of $D^+ \to K^-\pi^+\pi^+\pi^0$ is measured to be $(6.06\pm0.04_{\rm stat.}\pm0.07_{\rm syst.})\%$.

Abstract: We report an improved study of the semileptonic decay $D^0 \rightarrow \bar{K}^0\pi^-e^+\nu_{e}$ based on a sample of $7.9~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The branching fraction of this decay is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(D^0\rightarrow \bar{K}^0\pi^-e^+\nu_{e}) = (1.444 \pm 0.022_{\rm stat} \pm 0.024_{\rm syst})\%$, which is the most precise to date, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Based on investigation of the decay dynamics, we find that the decay is dominated by the $K^{*}(892)^-$ component and present an improved measurement of its branching fraction to be $\mathcal{B}(D^0\rightarrow K^{*}(892)^-e^+\nu_e) = (2.039 \pm 0.032_{\rm stat} \pm 0.034_{\rm syst})\%$. We also determine the ratios of the hadronic form factors for the $K^{*}(892)^-e^+\nu_e$ decay to be $r_{V} = V(0)/A_1(0) = 1.48 \pm 0.05_{\rm stat} \pm 0.02_{\rm syst}$ and $r_{2} = A_2(0)/A_1(0) = 0.70 \pm 0.04_{\rm stat} \pm 0.02_{\rm syst}$, where $V(0)$ is the vector form factor and $A_{1,2}(0)$ are the axial form factors. In addition, the $\bar{K}^0\pi^-$ $\mathcal{S}$-wave component is found to account for $(5.87 \pm 0.32_{\rm stat} \pm 0.16_{\rm syst})\%$ of the total decay rate, corresponding to a branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}[D^0\rightarrow (\bar{K}^0\pi^-)_{S-{\rm wave}}e^+\nu_e] = (0.085 \pm 0.005_{\rm stat} \pm 0.003_{\rm syst})\%$., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: Using $(27.12\pm 0.14)\times 10^{8}$ $\psi(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, the decay $\psi(3686)\to\Sigma^{0}\bar{\Sigma}^{0}\phi$ is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of 7.6$\sigma$. Its branching fraction is measured to be $(2.64 \pm 0.32_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 0.12_{\textrm{sys}}) \times 10^{-6}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, we search for potential intermediate states in the $\Sigma^{0}\phi$($\bar{\Sigma}^{0}\phi$) invariant mass distribution and a possible threshold enhancement in the $\Sigma^{0}\bar{\Sigma}^{0}$ system, but no conclusive evidence of is observed.

Abstract: Using a sample of $(2712\pm14)\times10^6$ $\psi(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform partial wave analyses of the decays $\psi(3686)\to p\bar{p}\pi^0$ and $\psi(3686)\to p\bar{p}\eta$. The branching fractions of $\psi(3686)\to p\bar{p}\pi^0$ and $\psi(3686)\to p\bar{p}\eta$ are determined to be $(133.9\pm11.2\pm2.3)\times10^{-6}$ or $(183.7\pm13.7\pm3.2)\times10^{-6}$ and $(61.5\pm6.5\pm1.1)\times10^{-6}$ or $(84.4\pm6.9\pm1.4)\times10^{-6}$, respectively, where the two solutions are caused by an ambiguous phase angle between resonant and continuum processes. Several well-established $N^*$ states are observed in the $p\pi^0$ and $p\eta$ systems, and the corresponding branching fractions are measured. The ratio of decay widths $\Gamma_{N(1535)\to N\eta}/\Gamma_{N(1535)\to N\pi}$ is determined to be $0.99\pm0.05\pm0.17$., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, submitted to PRD

22. Second harmonic generation with 48% conversion efficiency from cavity polygon modes in a monocrystalline lithium niobate microdisk resonator

Abstract: Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) based optical microresonators offer large nonlinear coefficient d_33 and high light-wave confinement, allowing highly efficient second-order optical nonlinear frequency conversion. Here, we achieved ultra-efficiency second harmonic generation (SHG) from high-Q polygon modes by maximizing the utilization of the highest nonlinear coefficient d_33 in a monocrystalline X-cut TFLN microdisk resonator for the first time. The polygon modes are designed and formed with two parallel sides perpendicular to the optical axis of the lithium niobate crystal by introducing weak perturbations into the microdisk of a tapered fiber, which maximizes the utilization of d_33. The polygon modes exhibit ultrahigh intrinsic Q factors of ~3.86X10(7), due to the fact that polygon modes are located far from the relatively rough sidewall of the microdisk. Moreover, the pump and second harmonic polygon modes share high modal overlap factor of ~80%. Consequently, SHG from cavity polygon modes with absolute conversion efficiency as high as 48.08% was realized at an on-chip pump level of only 4.599 mW without fine domain structures, surpassing the best results (23% and 30%) reported in other two domain-inversion-free phase matching schemes and even approaching the record (52%) in PPLN microresonators., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The process $e^+e^-\to K^0_S K^0_S \psi(3686)$ is studied by analyzing $e^+e^-$ collision data samples collected at eight center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.682 to 4.951 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $4.1~{\rm fb}^{-1}$. Observation of the $e^+e^-\to K^0_S K^0_S \psi(3686)$ process is found for the first time with a statistical significance of $6.3\sigma$, and the cross sections at each center-of-mass energy are measured. The ratio of cross sections of $e^+e^-\to K_S^0 K_S^0 \psi(3686)$ relative to $e^+e^-\to K^+ K^- \psi(3686)$ is determined to be $\frac{\sigma(e^+e^-\to K_S^0 K_S^0 \psi(3686))}{\sigma(e^+e^-\to K^+ K^- \psi(3686))}=0.45 \pm 0.25$, which is consistent with the prediction based on isospin symmetry. The uncertainty includes both statistical and systematic contributions. Additionally, the $K_S^0\psi(3686)$ invariant mass distribution is found to be consistent with three-body phase space. The significance of a contribution beyond three-body phase space is only $0.8\sigma$.

Abstract: Using $e^+e^-$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.13 to 4.70 GeV, we report the first evidence for a new excited $\Omega^{-}$ hyperon, the $\Omega^*(2109)^{-}$, through the process $e^+ e^- \to \Omega^*(2109)^{-} \bar{\Omega}^{+} +c.c.$ with a significance of 3.7 $\sigma$. The mass and width of $\Omega^*(2109)^{-}$ are measured to be $2108.8 \pm 5.5_{\rm stat} \pm 1.5_{\rm syst} {\rm MeV}/c^{2}$ and $21.6 \pm 17.7_{\rm stat} \pm 9.4_{\rm syst} {\rm MeV}$, respectively. We also present evidence for production of the $\Omega^*(2012)^{-}$ in the process $e^+ e^- \to \Omega^*(2012)^{-} \bar{\Omega}^{+} +c.c.$ with a significance of 3.7 $\sigma$., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: Using 7.93 ${\rm fb^{-1}}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 ${\rm GeV}$ with the BESIII detector, we present an analysis of the decay $D^{0} \to \eta \pi^- e^+ \nu_{e}$. The branching fraction of the decay $D^{0} \to a_{0}(980)^{-} e^+ \nu_{e}$ with $a_{0}(980)^{-} \to \eta \pi^{-}$ is measured to be $(0.86\pm0.17_{\text{stat}}\pm0.05_{\text{syst}})\times 10^{-4}$. The decay dynamics of this process is studied with a single-pole parameterization of the hadronic form factor and the Flatt\'e formula describing the $a_0(980)$ line shape in the differential decay rate. The product of the form factor $f^{ a_0}_{+}(0)$ and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cd}|$ is determined for the first time with the result $f^{ a_0}_+(0)|V_{cd}|=0.126\pm0.013_{\rm stat}\pm0.003_{\rm syst}$.

26. Determination of Nine Metal Elements in Oil Samples by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry with Microwave Digestion

Abstract: To establish an accurate determination method of metal elements in oils, 5 edible oils and 2 gutter oils were chose as raw material, and a new microwave digestion method was established to pretreat oils in this paper. The contents of metals were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The programs and conditions of microwave digestion were designed and optimized, and finally a new program for microwave digestion containing 5 steps was obtained, which was with a maximum digestion pressure of 35 atm, a maximum temperature of 190 ℃ and a retention time of 20 min. The performances of the established method were investigated and listed as follows: The linear relations of 9 metal elements were good in their concentration ranges, the determination coefficient ranged was from 0.9982 to 0.9994, the limits of detection was ranged from 0.0013 to 0.0122 μg/mL, and the standard recoveries of samples were ranged from 98.94% to 101.45%, RSD≤4% (n=6). The contents of 9 metal elements in 7 oil samples were determined using this method. The results showed that the nutritional elements in 5 edible oils were rich, and the contents of Cr , Cd and Pb were not detected, therefore, estimated preliminary，the nutritional value and safety of the oils were high. However, Cr, Cd and Pb in gutter oils were all detected, and the contents of Pb are far higher than the threshold limit value of national standard, so the gutter oils are not suitable for consumption. These applications showed that the method has many advantages of simple operation and high accuracy, the needs of determination of metal elements in oils can be satisfied.

27. Extraction, Acetylation Modification and Structure Characterization of Hemicelluloses from Corncob

Abstract: Hemicellulose was extracted from corncob and further modified by acetylation. Ultrasonic-assisted alkali method was employed for the extraction, in which sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and elemental iodine (I2) were used as co-catalyst for the acetylation of hemicellulose, respectively. Corncob hemicellulose and its acetylated products were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The yield and extraction rate of corncob hemicellulose were 33.7% and 81.0%, and the hemicellulose content reached 85.3wt%. The acetylation of corncob hemicellulose gave 84.6% yield and 1.27 degree of substitution (DS), respectively. The separation of hemicellulose from corncob using alkali method was effectively shortened by ultrasonic assistance, and the yield and extraction rate of corncob hemicellulose were improved. Concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and elemental iodine (I2) were effective co-catalyst for the acetylation of corncob hemicellulose. The results of IR and NMR showed that hemicelluloses were acetylated successfully, and TGA revealed that the thermal stability of the acetylated hemicellulose was improved. Moreover, the DS value of the acetylated product was moderate. Therefore, the acetylated product is expected to be used to prepare biodegradable materials for food packaging.

Abstract: The safety and reliability of battery storage systems are critical to the mass roll-out of electrified transportation and new energy generation. To achieve safe management and optimal control of batteries, the state of charge (SOC) is one of the important parameters. The machine-learning based SOC estimation methods of lithium-ion batteries have attracted substantial interests in recent years. However, a common problem with these models is that their estimation performances are not always stable, which makes them difficult to use in practical applications. To address this problem, an optimized radial basis function neural network (RBF-NN) that combines the concepts of Golden Section Method (GSM) and Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA) is proposed in this paper. Specifically, GSM is used to determine the optimum number of neurons in hidden layer of the RBF-NN model, and its parameters such as radial base center, connection weights and so on are optimized by SSA, which greatly improve the performance of RBF-NN in SOC estimation. In the experiments, data collected from different working conditions are used to demonstrate the accuracy and generalization ability of the proposed model, and the results of the experiment indicate that the maximum error of the proposed model is less than 2%.

30. Weakly acidic microenvironment of the wound bed boosting the efficacy of acidic fibroblast growth factor to promote skin regeneration

Abstract: The pH value within the wound microenvironment influences indirectly and directly all biochemical reactions taking place in the process of skin wound healing. Currently, it is generally believed that a low pH value, such as it is found on normal skin, is favorable for wound regeneration, while some investigations have shown that in fact alkaline microenvironments are required for some healing processes. The role of growth factors in promoting wound healing requires a specific microenvironment. In wound microenvironments of different pH, growth factors with different isoelectric points may have different effects. To explore whether the application of FGF with different isoelectric points in wounds with different pH values interferes with the healing process to different degrees, GelMA hydrogels with different pH values were prepared to maintain the wounds microenvironment with the same pH values, in which aFGF and bFGF were loaded as well. The results show that GelMA hydrogels of different pH values maintained the same pH of the wound microenvironment sustainably on the 4th day. Moreover, aFGF and bFGF promoted skin wound healing to varying degrees in different pH wound microenvironments. In particular, aFGF significantly promoted wound re-epithelialization in a weak acidic microenvironment, while bFGF promoted collagen synthesis and deposition in the early stage of weak acid wounds. In addition, aFGF plays a superior role in inhibiting inflammation in weak acidic wounds.

31. Are you more risk-seeking when helping others? Effects of situational urgency and peer presence on prosocial risky behavior

Abstract: IntroductionProsocial risky behavior (PRB) proposes that individuals take risks for others’ benefits or social welfare, and that this may involve trade-offs between risk and social preferences. However, little is known about the underlying cognitive mechanisms of risk-seeking or aversion during PRB.MethodsThis study adopted the dilemma-priming paradigm to examine the interaction between the risk levels of personal cost and situational urgency on PRB (Experiment 1, N = 88), and it further uncovered the modulation of the risk levels of failure (Experiment 2, N = 65) and peer presence (Experiment 3, N = 80) when helping others.ResultsIn Experiment 1, the participants involved in risky dilemmas made more altruistic choices for strangers in urgent situations compared to those for strangers in non-urgent situations. However, increasing the risk levels of personal cost decreased the frequencies of help offered to strangers in urgent situations. Experiment 2 further established that, similar to the risk of personal cost, increasing the risk levels of failure when helping others also decreased the frequencies of help offered to strangers in urgent situations. Furthermore, in dilemmas involving a low-risk personal cost, Experiment 3 showed that peer presence encouraged the participants to make more altruistic choices when providing help to strangers in non-urgent situations.DiscussionIndividuals demonstrate obvious risk-seeking behavior when helping others and that both non-urgent situations and peer presence weaken the effect of increased risk aversion on PRB in a limited manner.

Abstract: With the advent of sustainable and clean energy transitions, lithium-ion batteries have become one of the most important energy storage sources for many applications. Battery management is of utmost importance for the safe, efficient, and long-lasting operation of lithium-ion batteries. However, the frequently changing load and operating conditions, the different cell chemistries and formats, and the complicated degradation patterns pose challenges for traditional battery management. The data-driven solutions that have emerged in recent years offer great opportunities to uncover the underlying data mapping within a battery system. In particular, transfer learning improves the performance of data-driven strategies by transferring existing knowledge from different but related domains, and if properly applied, would be a promising approach for smarter battery management. To this end, this paper presents a systematic review for the applications of transfer learning in the field of battery management for the first time, with particular focuses on battery state estimation and ageing prognostics. Specifically, the general issues faced by conventional battery management are identified and the applications of transfer learning to these issues are summarized. Then, the specific challenges of each topic are identified and the potential solutions based on transfer learning are explained, followed by a discussion of the state of the art in terms of principles, algorithm frameworks, advantages and disadvantages. Finally, future trends of data-driven battery management with transfer learning are discussed in terms of key challenges and promising opportunities.

Abstract: Graphical User Interface (GUI) agents powered by Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have demonstrated human-like computer control capability. Despite their utility in advancing digital automation, a critical bottleneck persists: collecting high-quality trajectory data for training. Common practices for collecting such data rely on human supervision or synthetic data generation through executing pre-defined tasks, which are either resource-intensive or unable to guarantee data quality. Moreover, these methods suffer from limited data diversity and significant gaps between synthetic data and real-world environments. To address these challenges, we propose OS-Genesis, a novel GUI data synthesis pipeline that reverses the conventional trajectory collection process. Instead of relying on pre-defined tasks, OS-Genesis enables agents first to perceive environments and perform step-wise interactions, then retrospectively derive high-quality tasks to enable trajectory-level exploration. A trajectory reward model is then employed to ensure the quality of the generated trajectories. We demonstrate that training GUI agents with OS-Genesis significantly improves their performance on highly challenging online benchmarks. In-depth analysis further validates OS-Genesis's efficiency and its superior data quality and diversity compared to existing synthesis methods. Abstract: Federated learning (FL) is a distributed training technology that enhances data privacy in mobile edge networks by allowing data owners to collaborate without transmitting raw data to the edge server. However, data heterogeneity and adversarial attacks pose challenges to develop an unbiased and robust global model for edge deployment. To address this, we propose Federated hyBrid Adversarial training and self-adversarial disTillation (FedBAT), a new framework designed to improve both robustness and generalization of the global model. FedBAT seamlessly integrates hybrid adversarial training and self-adversarial distillation into the conventional FL framework from data augmentation and feature distillation perspectives. From a data augmentation perspective, we propose hybrid adversarial training to defend against adversarial attacks by balancing accuracy and robustness through a weighted combination of standard and adversarial training. From a feature distillation perspective, we introduce a novel augmentation-invariant adversarial distillation method that aligns local adversarial features of augmented images with their corresponding unbiased global clean features. This alignment can effectively mitigate bias from data heterogeneity while enhancing both the robustness and generalization of the global model. Extensive experimental results across multiple datasets demonstrate that FedBAT yields comparable or superior performance gains in improving robustness while maintaining accuracy compared to several baselines.

35. Task Preference Optimization: Improving Multimodal Large Language Models with Vision Task Alignment

Abstract: Current multimodal large language models (MLLMs) struggle with fine-grained or precise understanding of visuals though they give comprehensive perception and reasoning in a spectrum of vision applications. Recent studies either develop tool-using or unify specific visual tasks into the autoregressive framework, often at the expense of overall multimodal performance. To address this issue and enhance MLLMs with visual tasks in a scalable fashion, we propose Task Preference Optimization (TPO), a novel method that utilizes differentiable task preferences derived from typical fine-grained visual tasks. TPO introduces learnable task tokens that establish connections between multiple task-specific heads and the MLLM. By leveraging rich visual labels during training, TPO significantly enhances the MLLM's multimodal capabilities and task-specific performance. Through multi-task co-training within TPO, we observe synergistic benefits that elevate individual task performance beyond what is achievable through single-task training methodologies. Our instantiation of this approach with VideoChat and LLaVA demonstrates an overall 14.6% improvement in multimodal performance compared to baseline models. Additionally, MLLM-TPO demonstrates robust zero-shot capabilities across various tasks, performing comparably to state-of-the-art supervised models. Abstract: We study Schr\"odinger operators $H:= -\Delta + V$ with potentials $V$ that have power-law growth (not necessarily polynomial) at 0 and at $\infty$ using methods of Lie theory (Lie-Rinehart algebras) and microlocal analysis. More precisely, we show that $H$ is ''generated'' in a certain sense by an explicit Lie-Rinehart algebra. This allows then to construct a suitable (microlocal) calculus of pseudodifferential operators that provides further properties of $H$. Classically, this microlocal analysis method was used to study $H$ when the power-laws describing the potential $V$ have integer exponents. Thus, the main point of this paper is that this integrality condition on the exponents is not really necessary for the microlocal analysis method to work. While we consider potentials following (possibly non-integer) power-laws both at the origin and at infinity, our results extend right away to potentials having power-law singularities at several points. The extension of the classical microlocal analysis results to potentials with non-integer power-laws is achieved by considering the setting of Lie-Rinehart algebras and of the continuous family groupoids integrating them. (The classical case relies instead on Lie algebroids and Lie groupoids.)

37. Extremely Large Anisotropy of Effective Gilbert Damping in Half-Metallic CrO2

Abstract: Half-metals are a class of quantum materials with 100% spin-polarization at the Fermi level and have attracted a lot of attention for future spintronic device applications. CrO2 is one of the most promising half-metal candidates, for which the electrical and magnetic properties have been intensively studied in the last several decades. Here, we report the observation of a giant anisotropy (~1600%) of effective Gilbert damping in the single crystalline half metallic (100)-CrO2 thin films, which is significantly larger than the values observed on conventional ferromagnetic Fe and CoFe thin films. Furthermore, the effective Gilbert damping exhibits opposite temperature-dependent behaviors below 50 K with magnetic field along [010] direction and near [001] direction. These experimental results suggest the strong spin-orbit coupling anisotropy of the half-metallic CrO2 and might pave the way for future magnonic computing applications.

Abstract: The High Energy cosmic-Radiation Detection (HERD) facility is a dedicated high energy astronomy and particle physics experiment planned to be installed on the Chinese space station, aiming to detect high-energy cosmic rays (GeV $\sim$ PeV) and high-energy gamma rays ($>$ 500 MeV). The Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) is one of the sub-detectors of HERD, with its main function of providing real-time anti-conincidence signals for gamma-ray detection and the secondary function of measuring the charge of cosmic-rays. In 2023, a prototype of PSD was developed and tested at CERN PS&SPS. In this paper, we investigate the position response of the PSD using two reconstruction algorithms: the classic dual-readout ratio and the deep learning method (KAN & MLP neural network). With the latter, we achieved a position resolution of 2 mm (1$\sigma$), which is significantly better than the classic method.

40. Fast Biclique Counting on Bipartite Graphs: A Node Pivot-based Approach

Abstract: Counting the number of $(p, q)$-bicliques (complete bipartite subgraphs) in a bipartite graph is a fundamental problem which plays a crucial role in numerous bipartite graph analysis applications. However, existing algorithms for counting $(p, q)$-bicliques often face significant computational challenges, particularly on large real-world networks. In this paper, we propose a general biclique counting framework, called \npivot, based on a novel concept of node-pivot. We show that previous methods can be viewed as specific implementations of this general framework. More importantly, we propose a novel implementation of \npivot based on a carefully-designed minimum non-neighbor candidate partition strategy. We prove that our new implementation of \npivot has lower worst-case time complexity than the state-of-the-art methods. Beyond basic biclique counting, a nice feature of \npivot is that it also supports local counting (computing bicliques per node) and range counting (simultaneously counting bicliques within a size range). Extensive experiments on 12 real-world large datasets demonstrate that our proposed \npivot substantially outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms by up to two orders of magnitude.

41. HoVLE: Unleashing the Power of Monolithic Vision-Language Models with Holistic Vision-Language Embedding

Abstract: The rapid advance of Large Language Models (LLMs) has catalyzed the development of Vision-Language Models (VLMs). Monolithic VLMs, which avoid modality-specific encoders, offer a promising alternative to the compositional ones but face the challenge of inferior performance. Most existing monolithic VLMs require tuning pre-trained LLMs to acquire vision abilities, which may degrade their language capabilities. To address this dilemma, this paper presents a novel high-performance monolithic VLM named HoVLE. We note that LLMs have been shown capable of interpreting images, when image embeddings are aligned with text embeddings. The challenge for current monolithic VLMs actually lies in the lack of a holistic embedding module for both vision and language inputs. Therefore, HoVLE introduces a holistic embedding module that converts visual and textual inputs into a shared space, allowing LLMs to process images in the same way as texts. Furthermore, a multi-stage training strategy is carefully designed to empower the holistic embedding module. It is first trained to distill visual features from a pre-trained vision encoder and text embeddings from the LLM, enabling large-scale training with unpaired random images and text tokens. The whole model further undergoes next-token prediction on multi-modal data to align the embeddings. Finally, an instruction-tuning stage is incorporated. Our experiments show that HoVLE achieves performance close to leading compositional models on various benchmarks, outperforming previous monolithic models by a large margin. Abstract: We present a structural analysis of 521 galaxy candidates at 6.5 < z < 12.5, with $SNR > 10\sigma$ in the F444W filter, taken from the EPOCHS v1 sample, consisting of uniformly reduced deep JWST NIRCam data, covering the CEERS, JADES GOOD-S, NGDEEP, SMACS0723, GLASS and PEARLS surveys. We use standard software to fit single S\'ersic models to each galaxy in the rest-frame optical and extract their parametric structural parameters (S\'ersic index, half-light radius and axis-ratio), and \texttt{Morfometryka} to measure their non-parametric concentration and asymmetry parameters. We find a wide range of sizes for these early galaxies, but with a strong galaxy-size mass correlation up to $z \sim 12$ such that galaxy sizes continue to get progressively smaller in the high-redshift regime, following $R_{e} = 2.74 \pm 0.49 \left( 1 + z \right) ^{-0.79 \pm 0.08}$ kpc. Using non-parametric methods we find that galaxy merger fractions, classified through asymmetry parameters, at these redshifts remain consistent with those in literature, maintaining a value of $f_{m} \sim 0.12 \pm 0.07$ showing little dependence with redshift when combined with literature at $z > 4$. We find that galaxies which are smaller in size also appear rounder, with an excess of high axis-ratio objects. Finally, we artificially redshift a subsample of our objects to determine how robust the observational trends we see are, determining that observed trends are due to real evolutionary effects, rather than being a consequence of redshift effects., Comment: 35 pages, 13 figures. 43. Model Decides How to Tokenize: Adaptive DNA Sequence Tokenization with MxDNA

Abstract: Foundation models have made significant strides in understanding the genomic language of DNA sequences. However, previous models typically adopt the tokenization methods designed for natural language, which are unsuitable for DNA sequences due to their unique characteristics. In addition, the optimal approach to tokenize DNA remains largely under-explored, and may not be intuitively understood by humans even if discovered. To address these challenges, we introduce MxDNA, a novel framework where the model autonomously learns an effective DNA tokenization strategy through gradient decent. MxDNA employs a sparse Mixture of Convolution Experts coupled with a deformable convolution to model the tokenization process, with the discontinuous, overlapping, and ambiguous nature of meaningful genomic segments explicitly considered. On Nucleotide Transformer Benchmarks and Genomic Benchmarks, MxDNA demonstrates superior performance to existing methods with less pretraining data and time, highlighting its effectiveness. Finally, we show that MxDNA learns unique tokenization strategy distinct to those of previous methods and captures genomic functionalities at a token level during self-supervised pretraining. Abstract: We present a scalable and agile approach for ads image content moderation at Google, addressing the challenges of moderating massive volumes of ads with diverse content and evolving policies. The proposed method utilizes human-curated textual descriptions and cross-modal text-image co-embeddings to enable zero-shot classification of policy violating ads images, bypassing the need for extensive supervised training data and human labeling. By leveraging large language models (LLMs) and user expertise, the system generates and refines a comprehensive set of textual descriptions representing policy guidelines. During inference, co-embedding similarity between incoming images and the textual descriptions serves as a reliable signal for policy violation detection, enabling efficient and adaptable ads content moderation. Evaluation results demonstrate the efficacy of this framework in significantly boosting the detection of policy violating content.

However, existing benchmarks fail to comprehensively, objectively and accurately evaluate whether LMMs align with the diverse needs of humans in real-world scenarios. To bridge this gap, we propose the Multi-Dimensional Insights (MDI) benchmark, which includes over 500 images covering six common scenarios of human life. Notably, the MDI-Benchmark offers two significant advantages over existing evaluations: (1) Each image is accompanied by two types of questions: simple questions to assess the model's understanding of the image, and complex questions to evaluate the model's ability to analyze and reason beyond basic content. (2) Recognizing that people of different age groups have varying needs and perspectives when faced with the same scenario, our benchmark stratifies questions into three age categories: young people, middle-aged people, and older people. This design allows for a detailed assessment of LMMs' capabilities in meeting the preferences and needs of different age groups. With MDI-Benchmark, the strong model like GPT-4o achieve 79% accuracy on age-related tasks, indicating that existing LMMs still have considerable room for improvement in addressing real-world applications. 46. Federated t-SNE and UMAP for Distributed Data Visualization

Abstract: High-dimensional data visualization is crucial in the big data era and these techniques such as t-SNE and UMAP have been widely used in science and engineering. Big data, however, is often distributed across multiple data centers and subject to security and privacy concerns, which leads to difficulties for the standard algorithms of t-SNE and UMAP. To tackle the challenge, this work proposes Fed-tSNE and Fed-UMAP, which provide high-dimensional data visualization under the framework of federated learning, without exchanging data across clients or sending data to the central server. The main idea of Fed-tSNE and Fed-UMAP is implicitly learning the distribution information of data in a manner of federated learning and then estimating the global distance matrix for t-SNE and UMAP. To further enhance the protection of data privacy, we propose Fed-tSNE+ and Fed-UMAP+. We also extend our idea to federated spectral clustering, yielding algorithms of clustering distributed data. In addition to these new algorithms, we offer theoretical guarantees of optimization convergence, distance and similarity estimation, and differential privacy. Abstract: While holding great promise for improving and facilitating healthcare, large language models (LLMs) struggle to produce up-to-date responses on evolving topics due to outdated knowledge or hallucination. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is a pivotal innovation that improves the accuracy and relevance of LLM responses by integrating LLMs with a search engine and external sources of knowledge. However, the quality of RAG responses can be largely impacted by the rank and density of key information in the retrieval results, such as the "lost-in-the-middle" problem. In this work, we aim to improve the robustness and reliability of the RAG workflow in the medical domain. Specifically, we propose a map-reduce strategy, BriefContext, to combat the "lost-in-the-middle" issue without modifying the model weights. We demonstrated the advantage of the workflow with various LLM backbones and on multiple QA datasets. This method promises to improve the safety and reliability of LLMs deployed in healthcare domains.

48. BotSim: LLM-Powered Malicious Social Botnet Simulation

Abstract: Social media platforms like X(Twitter) and Reddit are vital to global communication. However, advancements in Large Language Model (LLM) technology give rise to social media bots with unprecedented intelligence. These bots adeptly simulate human profiles, conversations, and interactions, disseminating large amounts of false information and posing significant challenges to platform regulation. To better understand and counter these threats, we innovatively design BotSim, a malicious social botnet simulation powered by LLM. BotSim mimics the information dissemination patterns of real-world social networks, creating a virtual environment composed of intelligent agent bots and real human users. In the temporal simulation constructed by BotSim, these advanced agent bots autonomously engage in social interactions such as posting and commenting, effectively modeling scenarios of information flow and user interaction. Building on the BotSim framework, we construct a highly human-like, LLM-driven bot dataset called BotSim-24 and benchmark multiple bot detection strategies against it. The experimental results indicate that detection methods effective on traditional bot datasets perform worse on BotSim-24, highlighting the urgent need for new detection strategies to address the cybersecurity threats posed by these advanced bots.

49. Cluster-guided Contrastive Class-imbalanced Graph Classification

Abstract: This paper studies the problem of class-imbalanced graph classification, which aims at effectively classifying the categories of graphs in scenarios with imbalanced class distribution. Despite the tremendous success of graph neural networks (GNNs), their modeling ability for imbalanced graph-structured data is inadequate, which typically leads to predictions biased towards the majority classes. Besides, existing class-imbalanced learning methods in visions may overlook the rich graph semantic substructures of the majority classes and excessively emphasize learning from the minority classes. To tackle this issue, this paper proposes a simple yet powerful approach called C$^3$GNN that incorporates the idea of clustering into contrastive learning to enhance class-imbalanced graph classification. Technically, C$^3$GNN clusters graphs from each majority class into multiple subclasses, ensuring they have similar sizes to the minority class, thus alleviating class imbalance. Additionally, it utilizes the Mixup technique to synthesize new samples and enrich the semantic information of each subclass, and leverages supervised contrastive learning to hierarchically learn effective graph representations. In this way, we can not only sufficiently explore the semantic substructures within the majority class but also effectively alleviate excessive focus on the minority class. 50. DISC: Plug-and-Play Decoding Intervention with Similarity of Characters for Chinese Spelling Check

Abstract: One key characteristic of the Chinese spelling check (CSC) task is that incorrect characters are usually similar to the correct ones in either phonetics or glyph. To accommodate this, previous works usually leverage confusion sets, which suffer from two problems, i.e., difficulty in determining which character pairs to include and lack of probabilities to distinguish items in the set. In this paper, we propose a light-weight plug-and-play DISC (i.e., decoding intervention with similarity of characters) module for CSC models.DISC measures phonetic and glyph similarities between characters and incorporates this similarity information only during the inference phase. This method can be easily integrated into various existing CSC models, such as ReaLiSe, SCOPE, and ReLM, without additional training costs. Experiments on three CSC benchmarks demonstrate that our proposed method significantly improves model performance, approaching and even surpassing the current state-of-the-art models.
