When a curling rock slides on an ice sheet with an initial rotation, a lateral movement occurs, which is known as the curling phenomenon. The force of friction between the curling rock and the ice sheet changes continually with changes in the environment; thus, the sport of curling requires great skill and experience. The throwing of the curling rock is a great challenge in robot design and control, and existing curling robots usually adopt a combination scheme of a wheel chassis and gripper that differs significantly from human throwing movements. A hexapod curling robot that imitates human kicking, sliding, pushing, and curling rock rotating was designed and manufactured by our group, and completed a perfect show during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Games. Smooth switching between the walking and throwing tasks is realized by the robot’s morphology transformation based on leg configuration switching. The robot’s controlling parameters, which include the kicking velocity vk, pushing velocity vp, orientation angle θc, and rotation velocity ω, are determined by aiming and sliding models according to the estimated equivalent friction coefficient μequ and ratio e of the front and back frictions. The stable errors between the target and actual stopping points converge to 0.2 and 1.105 m in the simulations and experiments, respectively, and the error shown in the experiments is close to that of a well-trained wheelchair curling athlete. This robot holds promise for helping ice-makers rectify ice sheet friction or assisting in athlete training.

Abstract The current gait planning for legged robots is mostly based on human presets, which cannot match the flexible characteristics of natural mammals. This paper proposes a gait optimization framework for hexapod robots called Smart Gait. Smart Gait contains three modules: swing leg trajectory optimization, gait period & duty optimization, and gait sequence optimization. The full dynamics of a single leg, and the centroid dynamics of the overall robot are considered in the respective modules. The Smart Gait not only helps the robot to decrease the energy consumption when in locomotion, mostly, it enables the hexapod robot to determine its gait pattern transitions based on its current state, instead of repeating the formalistic clock-set step cycles. Our Smart Gait framework allows the hexapod robot to behave nimbly as a living animal when in 3D movements for the first time. The Smart Gait framework combines offline and online optimizations without any fussy data-driven training procedures, and it can run efficiently on board in real-time after deployment. Various experiments are carried out on the hexapod robot LittleStrong. The results show that the energy consumption is reduced by 15.9% when in locomotion. Adaptive gait patterns can be generated spontaneously both in regular and challenge environments, and when facing external interferences.

The rotational speed standard device that can carry loads is the key device for calibrating passive rotational speed sensors. The rotor of the passive rotational speed sensor is connected to the rotor of the standard speed device through a coupling, and the standard reference speed is provided by the standard device. Due to the rotor eccentricity, the unbalanced force of the rotor occurs, and it can not only affect the rotational speed accuracy but can also damage the mechanical bearings of the standard speed device. To solve this issue, a method for suppressing the unbalanced force of the speed standard device based on an active magnetic bearing (AMB) force compensation system is proposed. First, the overall structure of the system is briefly introduced. Then, the force feedback control system model with the AMB as the force actuator is established, and a PI controller is designed to achieve the disturbed force control. Finally, a semi-physical simulation experimental platform is built to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the AMB force compensation system can reduce 84.4%, 81.6%, and 79.8% of the unbalanced vibration force at the frequency of 30 Hz, 90 Hz, and 150 Hz, respectively.

In order to study the changes in the mechanical properties of road subgrade in cold areas after the freezing and thawing of highways in cold areas, indoor mechanical tests were carried out to investigate the effects of the number of freeze–thaw cycles, freezing temperature, water content, and circumferential pressure on the mechanical properties of road subgrade soil in cold areas after thawing. The mechanical properties of road subgrade soil in cold areas after thawing were measured under different conditions. The test results show that, within the study range: (1) After 7 freeze–thaw cycles, the destructive stress of the subgrade soil decreased from 321.7 kPa to 289.9 kPa, a decrease of 9.9%, and the elastic modulus decayed by 19.9%. (2) When the freezing temperature was reduced from −5 °C to −15 °C, the destructive stress of the subgrade soil decreased from 303.9 kPa to 290.1 kPa, a decrease of 13.8 kPa, approximately 4.5%, and the decrease in modulus of elasticity was about 1.6%. (3) The water content increased from 6% to 12%, and the destructive stress decreased from 405.43 kPa to 288.4 kPa, a decrease of 29.1%, and the modulus of elasticity decreased approximately linearly, with an attenuation of 50.4%. (4) The peripheral pressure increased from 50 kPa to 150 kPa, and the destructive stress increased from 194.7 kPa to 367.7 kPa, a growth of 88.8%, and its modulus of elasticity increased with the increase in peripheral pressure, an increase of 154.1%. The results of this research can provide a reference for highway and engineering construction in the western silt–soil distribution area.

Plain Language Summary Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a cerebrovascular disease that generally affects young patients. Medical treatments include anticoagulants, intracranial pressure (ICP)-lowering medications, and repeated lumbar punctures, effectively reducing CVST’s mortality rate. However, CVST still carries a potential risk of progressive vision loss. Optic nerve sheath fenestration (ONSF) has been reported to be effective and safe in protecting visual function of patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension. However, its efficacy and safety have not been evaluated in visual loss caused by CVST. We were the first to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ONSF in CVST-induced progressive visual loss based on long-term follow-ups. Before ONSF, all patients were still experiencing progressive visual loss despite receiving adequate anticoagulation and ICP-lowering therapy. We found ONSF to be 80.6% (1 week postoperatively) and 60.7% (after long-term follow-up of over 6 months) effective in stabilizing and/or improving visual function as well as 100% effective in papilledema resolution. Moreover, ONSF exhibited a favorable safety profile, with an extremely low complication rate of 5.6% despite under perioperative anticoagulation. Although visual impairment in CVST was reported to be uncommon, it often significantly affects quality of life and social value of patients. Thus, visual loss in CVST deserves more attention from neurologists, neurosurgeons, and ophthalmologists. Considering its efficacy and favorable safety, ONSF could be regarded a potentially important adjunctive approach to resolving progressive visual loss in CVST patients, on the basis of anticoagulation and ICP-lowering therapy. Reservoir engineering plays a critical role in achieving rational water resource allocation, providing ecological services, and promoting regional development. However, in the formulation of water allocation plans, there is often a tendency to prioritize meeting regional water demand while overlooking ecological benefits. This study develops a multi-objective water allocation model based on evaluating ecosystem services value supply and demand, integrating indicators such as ecosystem service fulfillment ability, water resources fulfillment ability, and equilibrium operation degree. Different development scenarios are also established using a forecasting model to formulate water allocation plans and apply a case study of the Datun Reservoir, a key hub on the eastern route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China. This study demonstrates that (1) by optimizing the allocation of domestic and industrial water supply and reservoir storage, the overall ecosystem service value of the Datun Reservoir can be enhanced by 5.15% to 11.36% and (2) in scenarios of high economic growth, there is potential to achieve coordination between water supply and ecosystem service value. (3) However, lower-than-expected economic growth may lead to a trade-off between ecosystem services and water supply capacity in the reservoir, which could be maintained at a lower level. The methods proposed in this paper are of significant practical importance for guiding rational reservoir water allocation and achieving coordination between ecological services and water supply capacity.

The complexity of construction in prefabricated buildings makes it vulnerable to uncertainty in project timelines, and traditional project timeline management is insufficient to control project timelines for prefabricated buildings. Therefore, research on project timeline management for prefabricated buildings is needed in order to optimize project timelines and improve project execution rates. This study proposed an improved method of setting prefabricated building buffer zones through the use of improved grey critical chain technology. Five major factors affecting project timelines in actual prefabricated construction projects were selected: personnel experience, degree of prefabrication, technical complexity, reasonableness of construction plans, and degree of construction space availability. The OPA technique was introduced and combined with the entropy weight method to improve the comprehensive weight coefficient of the grey critical chain calculation of the factors affecting the timeline. Other influencing coefficients were determined, and a new calculation method for the size of prefabricated building buffer zones was proposed. Monte Carlo simulations were conducted in Matlab on actual construction projects to ensure the scientific rationality of the improved method. The results showed that compared with the classical buffer calculation methods (cut-and-paste method, C&PM and square root standard deviation method, RSEM), the project timeline was reduced by 14.3% and 11.7%, respectively, using the improved method. The improved method not only reduces project uncertainties, but also achieves the goal of optimizing project timelines, and it is reasonable and effective. The results of the study provide a direction for the project timeline management of prefabricated building critical chains, and this method can be applied to the planning and management of prefabricated building buffer zones.

The phase separation commonly exists in Fe(Se, Te) and damages their superconducting performance. In this paper, we successfully tuned the phase separation in Fe(Se, Te) via adding FeF2 to the raw materials. A macroscopically ordered phase separation which exhibited submillimetre scale striations in width arranged along the c-axis was formed in the FeF2-added Fe(Se, Te), different from the commonly observed flower shape phase separation in FeF2-free Fe(Se, Te). Moreover, the two macroscopical separated phases were identified as FeSe0.6Te0.4 and FeSe0.4Te0.6. The regular phase separation morphology and the fixed phase composition enhanced the flux pinning behavior which induced the appearance of Δκ pinning and deferred the changing from point pinning to surface pinning with the raising temperature. As a result, Fe(Se, Te) with the macroscopically ordered phase separation overwhelms the common phase separation Fe(Se, Te) in Hc2, U0, and Jc. Notably, at 4.2 K, the critical current density Jc reaches 9.3 × 104 A/cm2 in self-field and 1.3 × 104 A/cm2 at 7 T which outclassed the reported values. Besides, the well-defined stoichiometry of the separated phase also lead to a higher Tc of 15.42 K with a narrower transition width of only 0.98 K. Overall, our work reveals the tuning of phase separation in Fe(Se, Te) in terms of phase morphology and stoichiometry, which is a new strategy for improving the superconducting performance in Fe(Se, Te).

Abstract It is significant to evaluate the air quality scientifically for the management of air pollution. As an air quality comprehensive evaluation problem, its uncertainty can be effectively addressed by the Dempster–Shafer (D–S) evidence theory. However, there is not enough research on air quality comprehensive assessment using D–S theory. Aiming at the counterintuitive fusion results of the D–S combination rule in the field of comprehensive decision, an improved evidence theory with evidence weight and evidence decision credibility (here namely DCre-Weight method) is proposed, and it is used to comprehensively evaluate air quality. First, this method determines the weights of evidence by the entropy weight method and introduces the decision credibility by calculating the dispersion of different evidence decisions. An algorithm case shows that the credibility of fusion results is improved and the uncertainty is well expressed. It can make reasonable fusion results and solve the problems of D–S. Then, the air quality evaluation model based on improved evidence theory (here namely the DCreWeight model) is proposed. Finally, according to the hourly air pollution data in Xi’an from June 1, 2014, to May 1, 2016, comparisons are made with the D–S, other improved methods of evidence theory, and a recent fuzzy synthetic evaluation method to validate the effectiveness of the model. Under the national AQCI standard, the MAE and RMSE of the DCreWeight model are 1.02 and 1.17. Under the national AQI standard, the DCreWeight model has the minimal MAE, RMSE, and maximal index of agreement, which validated the superiority of the DCreWeight model. Therefore, the DCreWeight model can comprehensively evaluate air quality. It can provide a scientific basis for relevant departments to prevent and control air pollution.

Abstract The investigation of the interaction between metal ions and DNA has always attracted much attention in the fields of bioinorganic chemistry, supramolecular coordination chemistry, and DNA nanotechnology. Its mode of action can be simply divided into two aspects. On the one hand, it is non-specific electrostatic adsorption, mainly including Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+ and other physiologically regulating ions; on the other hand, it is specific covalent binding, such as Pt2+, Hg2+, Ag+ and other heavy metal ions. This article focuses on the mechanism of action between Ag+ and DNA mismatch pair C-C, and summarizes its main characterization methods and various applications. It aims to provide a certain reference for the field of biological devices. With the development of cryo-electron microscopy and liquidcell TEM, the structure of C-Ag+-C is expected to be further characterized, which will be more widely used.

Information asymmetry is widespread in the P2P online lending market, creating an imbalance in the position of lenders and borrowers. This paper aims to expand the process of information exchange between lenders and borrowers by analyzing the link between soft information such as borrowers' loan descriptions and lending outcomes. Based on the transaction data of the 'Renrendai' platform, this paper analyzed the linguistic features and extracted the content of loan descriptions using a latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) theme model. To further explore the value of loan descriptions in predicting lending success, this paper conducts a prediction study based on a support vector machine model. It is found that: lenders focus on effective information in the loan descriptions, the linguistic complexity affects the transaction, with simple and direct statements being more favorable; the content for building a good personal image of the borrower will significantly contribute to the lending success. In the prediction study section, it is demonstrated that loan descriptions' language feature indicators can improve prediction accuracy. This paper uncovers the importance of loan descriptions in online lending transactions, which has implications in assisting lenders' investment judgments, as well as in platform information system improvements.

Knowledge graphs (KGs) serve as a crucial resource for numerous artificial intelligence tasks, significantly contributing to the advancement of the AI field. However, the incompleteness of existing KGs hinders their effectiveness in practical applications. Consequently, researchers have proposed the task of KG completion. Currently, embedding-based techniques dominate the field as they leverage the structural information within KGs to infer and complete missing parts. Nonetheless, these methods exhibit limitations. They are limited by the quality and quantity of structural information and are unable to handle the missing entities in the original KG. To overcome these challenges, researchers have attempted to integrate pretrained language models and textual data to perform KG completion. This approach utilizes the definition statements and description text of entities within KGs. The goal is to compensate for the latent connections that are difficult for traditional methods to obtain. However, text-based methods still lag behind embedding-based models in terms of performance. Our analysis reveals that the critical issue lies in the selection process of negative samples. In order to enhance the performance of the text-based methods, various types of negative sampling methods are employed in this study. We introduced prompt learning to fill the gap between the pre-training language model and the knowledge graph completion task, and to improve the model reasoning level. Simultaneously, a ranking strategy based on KG structural information is proposed to utilize KG structured data to assist reasoning. The experiment results demonstrate that our model exhibits strong competitiveness and outstanding inference speed. By fully exploiting the internal structural information of KGs and external relevant descriptive text resources, we successfully elevate the performance levels of KG completion tasks across various metrics.

We propose an instance-based learning approach with data augmentation and similarity evaluation to estimate the remaining useful life (RUL) of a mechanical component for health management. The publicly available PRONOSTIA datasets, which provide accelerated degradation test data for bearings, are used in our study. The challenges with the datasets include a very limited number of run-to-failure examples, no failure mode information, and a wide range of bearing life spans. Without a large number of training samples, feature engineering is necessary. Principal component analysis is applied to the spectrogram of vibration signals to obtain prognostic feature sequences. A data augmentation strategy is developed to generate synthetic prognostic feature sequences using learning instances. Subsequently, similarities between the test and learning instances can be assessed using a root mean squared (RMS) difference measure. Finally, an ensemble method is developed to aggregate the RUL estimates based on multiple similar prognostic feature sequences. The proposed approach demonstrates comparable performance with published solutions in the literature. It serves as an alternative method for solving the RUL estimation problem.

ObjectiveTo elucidate the clinical, radiologic characteristics of Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) associated with the other diseases.Materials and methodsClinical data were retrospectively collected from hospitalized patients with LHON associated with the other diseases at the Neuro-Ophthalmology Department at the Chinese People’s Liberation Army General Hospital (PLAGH) from December 2014 to October 2018.ResultsA total of 13 patients, 24 eyes (10 men and 3 women; mean age, 30.69 ± 12.76 years) with LHON mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations, were included in the cohort. 14502(5)11778(4)11778 &11696(1)12811(1)11696(1)3460(1). One patient was positive for aquaporin-4 antibody (AQP4-Ab), and two were positive for myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody (MOG-Ab). Three patients were associated with idiopathic optic neuritis (ON). Two patients were with compression optic neuropathy. Three patients were with the central nervous system (CNS) diseases. One patient was with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and one with idiopathic orbital inflammatory syndrome (IOIS). At the onset, visual acuity (VA) in eighteen eyes was below 0.1, one eye was 0.5, five eyes were above 0.5, while VA in sixteen eyes was below a 0.1 outcome, three eyes experienced moderate vision loss. MRI images showed T2 lesions and enhancement in nine patients who received corticosteroids treatment; additional immune modulators treatment was performed on two patients. None of the patients had relapse during the follow-up time.ConclusionLeber’s hereditary optic neuropathy can be accompanied with multiple-related diseases, especially different subtypes of ON, which were also exhibited with IOIS and compression optic neuropathy for the first time in this cohort. This condition may be a distinct entity with an unusual clinical and therapeutic profile.

Abstract Reprogramming the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment by modulating macrophages holds great promise in tumor immunotherapy. As a class of professional phagocytes and antigen‐presenting cells in the innate immune system, macrophages can not only directly engulf and clear tumor cells, but also play roles in presenting tumor‐specific antigen to initiate adaptive immunity. However, the tumor‐associated macrophages (TAMs) usually display tumor‐supportive M2 phenotype rather than anti‐tumor M1 phenotype. They can support tumor cells to escape immunological surveillance, aggravate tumor progression, and impede tumor‐specific T cell immunity. Although many TAMs‐modulating agents have shown great success in therapy of multiple tumors, they face enormous challenges including poor tumor accumulation and off‐target side effects. An alternative solution is the use of advanced nanostructures, which not only can deliver TAMs‐modulating agents to augment therapeutic efficacy, but also can directly serve as modulators of TAMs. Another important strategy is the exploitation of macrophages and macrophage‐derived components as tumor‐targeting delivery vehicles. Herein, we summarize the recent advances in targeting and engineering macrophages for tumor immunotherapy, including (1) direct and indirect effects of macrophages on the augmentation of immunotherapy and (2) strategies for engineering macrophage‐based drug carriers. The existing perspectives and challenges of macrophage‐based tumor immunotherapies are also highlighted.

To reduce the impact of safety risks on assembled buildings, this paper explores the factors affecting the safety risks of constructed buildings from the perspective of linkage between the design and construction phases. The method identifies 10 first-level risk indicators and 25 s-level safety risk indicators in five dimensions of prefabricated components, personnel, management, environment, and technology in both the design and construction phases, utilizing literature induction, expert interviews, questionnaire surveys, and Porter’s diamond model. The structural equation model was used to quantify the weights of the 25 s-level safety risk indicators to highlight the safety risk analysis of the assembled building and avoid risk. The results of the study show that it is important to analyze the safety risk linkage between the design phase and construction phase of the assembled building; from the perspective of the design-construction phase linkage, controlling the safety risk in the design phase can effectively reduce the safety risk in the construction phase.

The triplet-based knowledge in large-scale knowledge bases is most likely lacking in structural logic and problematic of conducting knowledge hierarchy. In this paper, we introduce the concept of metaknowledge to knowledge engineering research for the purpose of structural knowledge construction. Therefore, the Metaknowledge Extraction Framework and Document Structure Tree model are presented to extract and organize metaknowledge elements (titles, authors, abstracts, sections, paragraphs, etc.), so that it is feasible to extract the structural knowledge from multi-modal documents. Experiment results have proved the effectiveness of metaknowledge elements extraction by our framework. Meanwhile, detailed examples are given to demonstrate what exactly metaknowledge is and how to generate it. At the end of this paper, we propose and analyze the task flow of metaknowledge applications and the associations between knowledge and metaknowledge.

Optical vortex (OV) beams are ideal carriers for high-capacity optical communication, and long-wave infrared (LWIR) is the ideal wavelength band for long-range optical communication. Here, we propose a method for the achromatic generation of focused optical vortex (FOV) beams with arbitrary homogenous polarization states in the LWIR using a single all-germanium metasurface. The chromatic aberration and polarization sensitivity are eliminated by superimposing a polarization-insensitive geometric phase and a dispersion-engineered dynamic phase. The method is validated using two broadband FOV generators with the same diameter and focal length but different topological charges. The results indicate that the FOV generators are broadband achromatic and polarization insensitive. The proposed method may pave the way for chip-scale optical communication devices.

Purpose. To show the clinical characteristics, identify the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) features, and observe the visual outcome of methanol-induced optic neuropathy. Methods. Clinical data were retrospectively collected from in-patients diagnosed with methanol-induced optic neuropathy in the Neuro-Ophthalmology Department of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army General Hospital from January 2016 to January 2021. Results. Eight patients were included in this study. The exposure time was 6–34 h for ingestion, 3-4 months for inhalation, and more than ten years for skin absorption. All patients demonstrated bilateral acute visual impairment. Seven of eight patients had other accompanying systemic symptoms. Seven of eight patients demonstrated optic nerve lesions in MRI, and five presented with a hyperintense T2 signal in a “central” type. OCT showed the macular ganglion cell layer and inner plexiform layer (mGCL-IPL) thinning before the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thinning. The visual improvement was achieved transiently for seven of eight patients after treatment. One patient with a mitochondrial DNA mutation maintained a bilateral no-light perception (NLP) from the onset to the last visit. All patients had poor visual prognoses, with either light perception or NLP. Conclusions. Methanol-induced optic neuropathy is a rare bilateral optic neuropathy with a poor visual outcome. A centrally hyperintense T2 signal of the optic nerve is common in methanol-induced optic neuropathy. The thinning of the mGCL-IPL is more sensitive than that of the pRNFL for early diagnosis. A mitochondrial genetic defect may be a predisposing factor for methanol-induced optic neuropathy.

Diagnosability plays an important role in appraising the reliability and fault tolerance of symmetrical multiprocessor systems. The novel g-good-neighbor conditional diagnosability restrains that every fault-free node contains at least g fault-free neighbors and is suitable for large scale multiprocessor systems, attracting a lot of research attention. The relationships between the g-good-neighbor connectivity and g-good-neighbor diagnosability of graphs under the MM* model are separately studied, but only applicable in regular graphs or just ranges rather than exact values. As a promising network structure, in 2019, Guo et al. obtained that the g-good-neighbor diagnosability of the exchanged crossed cube (ECQ(s,t)) under the PMC model is 2g(s+2−g)−1 (t≥s>g). We noticed that the exact value of the g-good-neighbor diagnosability of ECQ(s,t) under the MM* model is still to be determined. In this paper, by proving the upper and lower bounds of the g-good-neighbor diagnosability of ECQ(s,t), for the first time, we derive that the exact value of its g-good-neighbor diagnosability under the MM* model is tgm(ECQ(s,t))=2g(s+2−g)−1 (t≥s>g), achieving the unity of the g-good-neighbor diagnosability of ECQ(s, t) under both the PMC model and MM* model. Towards the end, simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate the correctness and effectiveness of our conclusion. Our research provides an important supplement to the g-good-neighbor diagnosability of ECQ(s,t).

A bandpass filter integrated metalens based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) for long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) imaging is designed in this paper. The bandwidth of the metalens, which is a diffractive optical element, decreases significantly with the increase of the aperture size to a fixed f-number, which leads to the decline of imaging performance. The same material composition and preparation process of the metalens and the EIT metasurface in the long-wavelength infrared make it feasible that the abilities of focusing imaging and filtering are integrated into a metasurface device. With the purpose of validating the feasibility of this design method, we have designed a 300-μm-diameter integrated metalens whose f-number is 0.8 and the simulation was carried out. The introduction of EIT metasurface does not affect the focusing near the diffraction limit at the target wavelength, and greatly reduces the influence of stray light caused by non-target wavelength incident light. This bandpass filter integrated metalens design method may have a great potential in the field of LWIR compact optical systems.

Abstract Background Shanghai is one of the earliest cities in developing countries to introduce an organized colorectal screening program for its residents to fight against the rising disease burden of colorectal cancer (CRC). This study aims to investigate the impact of the Shanghai screening program implemented in 2013 on the survival rates of CRC patients. Methods We calculated up to 5-year survival rates for 18,592 CRC patients from a representative district of Shanghai during 2002–2016, using data from the Shanghai Cancer Registry. We performed joinpoint regressions to examine temporal changes in the trends of the CRC survival rates. We then conducted Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards modelling to study the association of the survival rates with screening behaviors of the patients. In all the model specifications, we took into account the gender, age and TNM stage at diagnosis, and level of treatment hospital of the patients. Results We find that the annual percentage changes of the survival rates increased faster after somewhere around 2013, however, the differential trends were not significant. Results from the Cox multivariate regression analysis suggest that patients who did not participate in the screening program showed significantly lower cancer-specific survival (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.46; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.12–1.91) and all-causes survival (HR = 1.37; 95% CI: 1.05–1.77), compared to those who did. Among program participants, delayed colonoscopy was associated with poor cancer-specific survival (hazard ratio (HR) = 2.93; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.64–5.23) and all-causes survival (HR = 3.29; 95% CI: 1.85–5.84). Conclusion Screening participation and high level of colonoscopy compliance can improve the survival of CRC participants.

The design of new, efficient catalysts for the conversion of CO2 to useful fuels under mild conditions is urgent in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and alleviate the energy crisis. In this work, a series of transition metals (TMs), including Sc to Zn, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd and Ag, supported on a boron nitride (BN) monolayer with boron vacancies, were investigated as electrocatalysts for the CO2 reduction reaction (CRR) using comprehensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results demonstrate that a single-Mo-atom-doped boron nitride (Mo-doped BN) monolayer possesses excellent performance for converting CO2 to CH4 with a relatively low limiting potential of −0.45 V, which is lower than most catalysts for the selective production of CH4 as found in both theoretical and experimental studies. In addition, the formation of OCHO on the Mo-doped BN monolayer in the early hydrogenation steps is found to be spontaneous, which is distinct from the conventional catalysts. Mo, as a non-noble element, presents excellent catalytic performance with coordination to the BN monolayer, and is thus a promising transition metal for catalyzing CRR. This work not only provides insight into the mechanism of CRR on the single-atom catalyst (Mo-doped BN monolayer) at the atomic level, but also offers guidance in the search for appropriate earth-abundant TMs as electrochemical catalysts for the efficient conversion of CO2 to useful fuels under ambient conditions.

Background: Older individuals are at high risk for morbidity and mortality due to influenza, and the most effective way to prevent influenza is yearly vaccination. In China, the influenza vaccine is not covered by the national Expanded Program on Immunization, and more evidence is needed about influenza vaccine usage among older individuals. Objective: To determine the influenza vaccination coverage and its influencing factors, and understand barriers to older adults receiving influenza vaccinations in Shanghai, China. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with residents aged 60 and older. Vaccination status in the 2016–17 influenza season and reasons for or against vaccination were surveyed. The vaccination coverage rates were adjusted by gender, age and community distribution, and potential factors influencing vaccination uptake were determined by bivariate logistic regression. Results: In total, 253 of the 4417 respondents received an influenza vaccine during the 2016–17 season, yielding an adjusted coverage rate of 5.2% (95% CI, 4.5-5.8). The frequency of receiving the vaccine was higher for older individuals living with family/friends than that for those living alone (p < 0.05), and lower among individuals with chronic respiratory diseases (p < 0.05). Among unvaccinated respondents, lack of influenza vaccine awareness was the most common reason for being unvaccinated (48.3%, 2012/4164). Conclusion: Influenza vaccination coverage is extremely low among older people in Shanghai, and lack of awareness of the influenza vaccine might be a potential barrier to vaccination. Our study highlights the need for an appropriate influenza vaccination strategy and program targeting the older population.

Purpose: The incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) has increased continuously in recent years. However, the therapeutic effects of current treatments still remain undesired. This study aims to investigate the role of C-CBL in retinal angiogenesis in ROP and its potential as a therapeutic target. Methods: Mouse retina microvascular endothelial cells (mRMECs) and induced experimental ROP/ oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) mice were employed to investigate the role of C-CBL in angiogenesis with combined molecular and cellular approaches, and histopathology methods. OIR mouse pups at postnatal day 12 (P12) were either injected intravitreally with adenovirus overexpressing c-Cbl or c-Cbl siRNA. Retinal neovascularization and avascular status were evaluated by retinal immunofluorescence (IF) staining, whole-mounts and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. Results: C-CBL inhibits neovascularization by negatively regulating JAK2/STAT3/VEGF signaling axis in a ubiquitination-dependent manner. Knockdown of c-Cbl by siRNA reduced ubiquitin-mediated JAK2 degradation and increased levels of p-JAK2, p-STAT3, VEGF, and neovascularization in mRMECs, which can be reversed by JAK2 inhibitor treatment. While knockdown of c-Cbl significantly increased neovascular (NV) zone in the retinas, c-Cbl overexpression inhibited neovascularization in the retinal tissues in OIR mice. Conclusion: We found that C-CBL is required for anti-neovascularization process in ROP development by inhibiting JAK2/STAT3-dependent angiogenesis. Thus, our finding strongly suggest that C-CBL may be a potential novel therapeutic target for treating ROP.

Abstract Background To determine the clinical characteristics and molecular genetic background responsible for USH2A mutations associated with nonsyndromic retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in five Chinese families, a retrospective cross‐sectional study was performed. Methods Data on detailed history and comprehensive ophthalmological examinations were extracted from medical charts. Genomic DNA was sequenced by whole‐exome sequencing. The pathogenicity predictions were evaluated by in silico analysis. The structural modeling of the wide‐type and mutant USH2A proteins was displayed based on the I‐Tasser software. Results The ultra‐wide‐field fundus imaging showed a distinctive pattern of hyperautofluorescence in the parafoveal ring with macular sparing. Ten USH2A variants were detected, including seven missense mutations, two splicing mutations, and one insertion mutation. Six of these variants have already been reported, and the remaining four were novel. Of the de novo mutations, the p.C931Y and p.G4489S mutations were predicted to be deleterious or probably damaging; the p.M4853V mutation was predicted to be neutral or benign; and the IVS22+3A>G mutation was a splicing mutation that could influence mRNA splicing and affect the formation of the hairpin structure of the USH2A protein. Conclusions Our data further confirm that USH2A protein plays a pivotal role in the maintenance of photoreceptors and expand the spectrum of USH2A mutations that are associated with nonsyndromic RP in Chinese patients.

Abstract Background Life expectancy at birth (LE) is a comprehensive measure that accounts for age-specific death rates in a population. Shanghai has ranked first in LE in China mainland for decades. Understanding the reasons behind its sustained gain in LE provides a good reflection of many other cities in China. The aim of this study is intended to explore temporal trend in age- and cause-specific gains in LE in Shanghai and the probable reasons lay behind. Methods Joinpoint regression was applied to evaluate temporal trend in LE and the long time span was then divided accordingly. Contributions to change in LE (1973–2015) were decomposed by age and cause at corresponding periods. Results LE in Shanghai could be divided into four phases ie., descent (1973–1976), recovery (1976–1998), rapid rise (1998–2004) and slow rise (2004–2015). The growing LE was mainly attributed to reductions in mortality from the elderly populations and chronic diseases such as cerebrovascular disease, chronic lower respiratory disease, and gastrointestinal cancers (stomach, liver and esophageal cancer). Conclusions The four-decade sustained gain in LE in Shanghai is due to the reductions in mortality from the elderly and chronic diseases such as cerebrovascular disease, chronic lower respiratory disease, and gastrointestinal cancers. Further growth momentum still comes from the elderly population.

Longwave infrared (LWIR) optics are essential for several technologies, such as thermal imaging and wireless communication, but their development is hindered by their bulk and high fabrication costs. Metasurfaces have recently emerged as powerful platforms for LWIR integrated optics; however, conventional metasurfaces are highly chromatic, which adversely affects their performance in broadband applications. In this work, the chromatic dispersion properties of metasurfaces are analyzed via ray tracing, and a general method for correcting chromatic aberrations of metasurfaces is presented. By combining the dynamic and geometric phases, the desired group delay and phase profiles are imparted to the metasurfaces simultaneously, resulting in good achromatic performance. Two broadband achromatic metasurfaces based on all-germanium platforms are demonstrated in the LWIR: a broadband achromatic metalens with a numerical aperture of 0.32, an average intensity efficiency of 31%, and a Strehl ratio above 0.8 from 9.6 μm to 11.6 μm, and a broadband achromatic metasurface grating with a constant deflection angle of 30° from 9.6 μm to 11.6 μm. Compared with state-of-the-art chromatic-aberration-restricted LWIR metasurfaces, this work represents a substantial advance and brings the field a step closer to practical applications.

More than 30 residents and nursing assistants in a geriatric nursing hospital developed acute gastroenteritis from December 7th to December 18th, 2014 in Shanghai, China. An immediate epidemiological investigation was conducted to identify the etiological agent of the outbreak, mode of transmission and the risk factors. Cases were investigated according to an epidemiological questionnaire. Samples from cases, highly transmissible environmental surfaces and drinking water were collected for pathogens detection. A retrospective cohort study was conducted to explore the transmission mode. A total of 34 cases were affected in this acute gastroenteritis outbreak, including 23 residents, 9 nursing assistants and 2 doctors. 13 out of 30 samples were positive for GII.17 norovirus, no other pathogen was detected. The cascading launch and cooperative work of lander and rover are the pivotal methods to achieve lunar zero-distance exploration. The separated design results in a heavy system mass that requires more launching costs and a limited exploration area that is restricted to the vicinity of the immovable lander. To solve this problem, we have designed a six-legged movable repetitive lander, called “HexaMRL”, which congenitally integrates the function of both the lander and rover. However, achieving a buffered landing after a failure of the integrated drive units (IDUs) in the harsh lunar environment is a great challenge. In this paper, we systematically analyze the fault-tolerant capacity of all possible landing configurations in which the number of remaining normal legs is more than two and design the landing algorithm to finish a fault-tolerant soft-landing for the stable configuration. A quasi-incentre stability optimization method is further proposed to increase the stability margin during supporting operations after landing. To verify the fault-tolerant landing performance on the moon, a series of experiments, including five-legged, four-legged and three-legged soft-landings with a vertical landing velocity of −1.9 m/s and a payload of 140 kg, are successfully carried out on a 5-DoF lunar gravity ground-testing platform. The HexaMRL with fault-tolerant landing capacity will greatly promote the development of a next-generation lunar prober.

Brucellosis, a zoonotic disease, was made statutorily notifiable in China in 1955. We analyzed the incidence and spatial–temporal distribution of human brucellosis during 1955–2014 in China using notifiable surveillance data: aggregated data for 1955–2003 and individual case data for 2004–2014. A total of 513,034 brucellosis cases were recorded, of which 99.3% were reported in northern China during 1955–2014, and 69.1% (258, 462/374, 141) occurred during February–July in 1990–2014. Incidence remained high during 1955–1978 (interquartile range 0.42–1.0 cases/100,000 residents), then decreased dramatically in 1979–1994. However, brucellosis has reemerged since 1995 (interquartile range 0.11–0.23 in 1995–2003 and 1.48–2.89 in 2004–2014); the historical high occurred in 2014, and the affected area expanded from northern pastureland provinces to the adjacent grassland and agricultural areas, then to southern coastal and southwestern areas. Control strategies in China should be adjusted to account for these changes by adopting a One Health approach.

We conducted sentinel-based surveillance for norovirus in the Pudong area of Shanghai, China, during 2012–2013, by analyzing 5,324 community surveys, 408,024 medical records, and 771 laboratory-confirmed norovirus infections among 3,877 diarrhea cases. Our analysis indicated an outpatient incidence of 1.5/100 person-years and a community incidence of 8.9/100 person-years for norovirus-associated diarrhea.

This paper investigates the deployment of collaborative estimation and actuation scheme of wireless sensor and actuator networks for the agriculture industry. In our proposed scheme, sensor nodes conduct a local estimation based on the Kalman filter for enhancing the estimation stability and further transmit data to the actuator nodes under a multi-rate transmission mode for enhancing the overall energy efficiency of the wireless network. Considering the mutual effect of related clusters, a collaborative actuation scheme of actuator nodes is integrated into our proposed scheme for improving the estimation accuracy and convergence speed. With an accurate estimation of the changes in the environmental parameters, combining the fuzzy neural network with the PID control algorithm, the actuator exerts reliable control over the environmental parameters. Performance evaluations and simulation analysis conducted based on the effects of temperature demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme in controlling the greenhouse environmental changes for in the agriculture industry.

IntroductionObstructive sleep apnoea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is characterised by recurring episodes of complete or partial upper airway collapse during sleep. Persistent OSAHS is associated with long-term consequences, such as growth failure, cardiovascular and neurocognitive problems in children. Different from the aetiology of OSAHS in adults, the most common cause of paediatric OSAHS is adenotonsillar hypertrophy. Adenotonsillectomy (AT) has been recommended as the first-line treatment of paediatric OSAHS. Several studies have suggested that retarded growth caused by OSAHS can improve after AT during the prepubertal period. This review will systematically search and summarise the available evidence on the effects of AT on children’s growth.Methods and analysisWe will conduct electronic searches in MEDLINE (via PubMed), Embase, Google Scholar and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) or cohort studies that included a control group. Additional records will be searched by checking the references included in the selected studies and relevant reviews. At least two authors will undertake selection of studies and data extraction independently and in duplicate. The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool and Risk Of Bias In Non-randomised Studies—of Interventions will be used to assess the risk of bias of RCT and cohort studies, respectively. A random-effects model will be used for meta-analyses. Data synthesis and other analyses will be carried out using the RevMan V.5.3 software. The Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation will be used to assess the quality of the supporting evidence behind each main comparison.Ethics and disseminationThere is no ethical issue in this systematic review given that we will only include published studies. Introduction: Disparities in the incidence, mortality, and survival of cancer types between urban and rural areas in China reflect the effects of different risk factor exposure, education, and different medical availability. We aimed to characterize the disparities in the incidence, mortality, and survivals of cancer types between urban and rural areas in Shanghai, China, 2002-2015.Materials and Methods: The incidence and mortality were standardized by Segi's world standard population. Trends in the incidence and mortality of cancers were compared using annual percent change. The 5-year observed and relative survivals were calculated with life table and Ederer II methods.Results: Age-standardized incidences and mortalities were 212.55/105 and 109.45/105 in urban areas and 210.14/105 and 103.99/105 in rural areas, respectively. Female breast cancer and colorectal cancer occurred more frequently in urban than in rural areas, quite in contrast to liver cancer and cervical cancer. Cancers of lung and bronchus, liver, stomach, and colon and rectum were the leading causes of cancer death in both areas. Age-standardized incidence of female breast cancer and colorectal cancer in urban areas increased while gastric cancer and liver cancer decreased in both areas. Age-standardized mortalities of cancers of breast, esophagus, stomach, colon and rectum, liver, and lung and bronchus decreased in both areas. For all cancers combined, the 5-year observed and relative survivals of cancer patients were higher in urban than in rural areas. The 5-year observed and relative survivals of cancers of liver, pancreas, stomach, brain and central nervous system (CNS), and prostate were higher in urban than in rural areas. The 5-year observed and relative survivals of cervical cancer were higher in rural than in urban areas.Conclusions: Factors promoting female breast cancer and colorectal cancer in urban areas and liver cancer and cervical cancer in rural areas should be specifically intervened in cancer prophylaxis. Improved medical services can greatly prolong the survival of major cancers in rural areas.

Since March 2013, a novel influenza A(H7N9) virus has caused 3 epidemic waves of human infection in mainland China. We analyzed data from patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza A(H7N9) virus infection to estimate the risks for severe outcomes after hospitalization across the 3 waves. We found that hospitalized patients with confirmed infections in waves 2 and 3 were younger and more likely to be residing in small cities and rural areas than were patients in wave 1; they also had a higher risk for death, after adjustment for age and underlying medical conditions. Risk for death among hospitalized patients during waves 2 and 3 was lower in Jiangxi and Fujian Provinces than in eastern and southern provinces. The variation in risk for death among hospitalized case-patients in different areas across 3 epidemic waves might be associated with differences in case ascertainment, changes in clinical management, or virus genetic diversity.

The 24 GHz continuous-wave (CW) Doppler radar sensor (DRS) is widely used for measuring the instantaneous speed of moving objects by using a non-contact approach, and has begun to be used in train-borne movable speed measurements in recent years in China because of its advanced performance. The architecture and working principle of train-borne DRSs with different structures including single-channel DRSs used for freight train speed measurements in railway freight dedicated lines and dual-channel DRSs used for speed measurements of high-speed and urban rail trains in railway passenger dedicated lines, are first introduced. Then, the disadvantages of two traditional speed calibration methods for train-borne DRS are described, and a new speed calibration method based on the Doppler shift signal simulation by imposing a signal modulation on the incident CW microwave signal is proposed. A 24 GHz CW radar target simulation system for a train-borne DRS was specifically realized to verify the proposed speed calibration method for a train-borne DRS, and traceability and performance evaluation on simulated speed were taken into account. The simulated speed range of the simulation system was up to (5~500) km/h when the simulated incident angle range was within the range of (45 ± 8)°, and the maximum permissible error (MPE) of the simulated speed was ±0.05 km/h. Finally, the calibration and uncertainty evaluation results of two typical train-borne dual-channel DRS samples validated the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed speed calibration approach for a train-borne DRS with full range in the laboratory as well as in the field.

In this paper, uniqueness results for boundary value problem of fractional differential equation are obtained. Both the Banach's contraction mapping principle and the theory of linear operator are used, and a comparison between the obtained results is provided.

During May-August 2013, a malaria outbreak comprising 874 persons in Shanglin County, China, was detected among 4,052 persons returning from overseas. Ghana was the predominant destination country, and 92.3% of malarial infections occurred in gold miners. Preventive measures should be enhanced for persons in high-risk occupations traveling to malaria-endemic countries.

Closure of live poultry markets was implemented in areas affected by the influenza virus A(H7N9) outbreak in China during winter, 2013–14. Our analysis showed that closing live poultry markets in the most affected cities of Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces was highly effective in reducing the risk for H7N9 infection in humans.

This paper reports a vector Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer based on heterodyne detection and IQ demodulation algorithm. This approach employs an acousto-optic frequency shifter to generate a single-frequency reference, which simplifies the probe spectrum and directly features the Brillouin gain and phase shift compared with the phase modulation. In addition, the proposed IQ demodulation algorithm makes signal processing easy to implement and allows fast and real-time demodulation. A proof-of-concept experiment is carried out in an ~1.6-km standard single-mode fiber consisting of two different sections of fibers. Both the Brillouin gain and phase-shift spectrograms are successfully measured with an ~2-m spatial resolution. The temperature dependence values of the Brillouin gain and phase-shift spectra are also measured, and the temperature dependence values of the Brillouin frequency shift show excellent linearity larger than 0.999 and almost identical slopes of 1.166 and 1.159 MHz/°C, respectively.

The failure of wind turbine blades is a major concern in the wind power industry due to the resulting high cost. It is, therefore, crucial to develop methods to monitor the integrity of wind turbine blades. Different methods are available to detect subsurface damage but most require close proximity between the sensor and the blade. Thermography, as a non-contact method, may avoid this problem. Both passive and active pulsed and step heating and cooling thermography techniques were investigated for different purposes. A section of a severely damaged blade and a small “plate” cut from the undamaged laminate section of the blade with holes of varying diameter and depth drilled from the rear to provide “known” defects were monitored. The raw thermal images captured by both active and passive thermography demonstrated that image processing was required to improve the quality of the thermal data. Different image processing algorithms were used to increase the thermal contrasts of subsurface defects in thermal images obtained by active thermography. A method called “Step Phase and Amplitude Thermography”, which applies a transform-based algorithm to step heating and cooling data was used. This method was also applied, for the first time, to the passive thermography results. The outcomes of the image processing on both active and passive thermography indicated that the techniques employed could considerably increase the quality of the images and the visibility of internal defects. The signal-to-noise ratio of raw and processed images was calculated to quantitatively show that image processing methods considerably improve the ratios.

A major barrier to the acceptance of small wind turbines is that they are perceived to be noisy. This paper investigates an aspect of noise emission that has not been considered; vibration and noise generation from the tower. First, vibration measurements were made using accelerometers placed on the 10.2 m monopole tower of a Skystream 2.4 kW wind turbine, and natural frequencies and corresponding deflection shapes were calculated. Second, the results from the survey were used to verify the predictions of a finite element model of the tower structure. Lastly, the tower’s acoustic emission was simulated computationally, as it was not possible to measure it accurately. Most vibration energy occurred in the very low frequency band (≤10 Hz). It was found that wind itself can only excite the first two bending modes. On the other hand, emitted noise from the tower at large distances can be neglected, as close to the tower, the noise can reach 30 dB.

PURPOSE:To evaluate the association of social support status, health insurance and clinical factors with the quality of life of Chinese women with breast cancer. METHODS:Information on demographics, clinical characteristics, and social support status was collected from 1,160 women with newly diagnosed breast cancer in Shanghai, China. The Perceived Social Support Scale was used to assess different sources of social support for breast cancer patients. The quality of life was evaluated using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast Cancer that consisted of five domains: breast cancer-specific, emotional, functional, physical, and social & family well-being. Multivariate linear regression models were used to evaluate the associations of demographic variables, clinical characteristics, and social support status with the quality of life measures. RESULTS:Adequate social support from family members, friends and neighbors, and higher scores of Perceived Social Support Scale were associated with significantly improved quality of life of breast cancer patients. Higher household income, medical insurance plans with low copayment, and treatment with traditional Chinese medicine for breast cancer all were associated with higher (better) scores of quality of life measures whereas patients receiving chemotherapy had significantly lower scores of quality of life. CONCLUSION:Social support and financial aids may significantly improve the quality of life of breast cancer survivors.

Timely reporting, effective analyses and rapid distribution of surveillance data can assist in detecting the aberration of disease occurrence and further facilitate a timely response. In China, a new nationwide web-based automated system for outbreak detection and rapid response was developed in 2008. The China Infectious Disease Automated-alert and Response System (CIDARS) was developed by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention based on the surveillance data from the existing electronic National Notifiable Infectious Diseases Reporting Information System (NIDRIS) started in 2004. NIDRIS greatly improved the timeliness and completeness of data reporting with real time reporting information via the Internet. CIDARS further facilitates the data analysis, aberration detection, signal dissemination, signal response and information communication needed by public health departments across the country. In CIDARS, three aberration detection methods are used to detect the unusual occurrence of 28 notifiable infectious diseases at the county level and to transmit that information either in real-time or on a daily basis. The Internet, computers and mobile phones are used to accomplish rapid signal generation and dissemination, timely reporting and reviewing of the signal response results. CIDARS has been used nationwide since 2008; all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in China at the county, prefecture, provincial and national levels are involved in the system. It assists with early outbreak detection at the local level and prompts reporting of unusual disease occurrences or potential outbreaks to CDCs throughout the country.
