Search

The binding energy spectrum and electron momentum profiles of the inner orbitals of methyl iodide have been measured using an electron momentum spectrometer at the impact energy of 1200 eV plus binding energy. Two peaks in the binding energy spectrum, arising from the spin-orbit splitting, are observed and the corresponding electron momentum profiles are obtained. Relativistic density functional calculations are performed to elucidate the experimental electron momentum profiles of two spin-orbit splitting components, showing agreement with each other except for the intensity in low momentum region. The measured high intensity in the low momentum region can be further explained by the distorted wave calculation.

We report on the initial results of seeing measurements at the Antarctic Taishan Station (ATS) using a differential image motion monitor observed in the visible at a height of 2.5 m above the snow surface, during the site-testing experiments carried out on 2014 January 13 and 15. The median seeing was found to be 0.73 arcsec and the 25th and 75th percentiles of the seeing cumulative distribution were 0.59 and 0.87 arcsec, respectively, with a minimum of ∼0.5 arcsec at ∼16:00–19:00 local time (UTC + 5). Such a seeing minimum has a good temporal association with the refractive index structure constant ($C_n^2$) minimum simultaneously observed at ATS. Interestingly, both temporal windows of $C_n^2$ and seeing minimum coincide with those of minimum temperature gradients ($\rm \sim 0\,^{\circ }C\,m^{-1}$), we had more than one month of continuous measurements of Cn2 and temperature gradients between 2013 December 30 and 2014 February 10. This suggests that high-quality seeing windows might be opened at ATS with the potential for astronomical activities, especially for solar observations.

We present here a detailed analysis of an unusual absorption line system in the quasar SDSS J122826.79+100532.2. The absorption lines in the system have a common redshifted velocity structure starting from $v\sim0$ and extending to $\sim1,000\ \mathrm{km~s}^{-1}$, and are clearly detected in hydrogen Balmer series up to H$\iota$, in metastable neutral helium triplet, and in optical lines of excited states of single ionized iron. We estimated that the absorber has a density $n_{\mathrm{H}}\approx10^{8.4}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ and an ionization parameter $U\approx10^{-1.2}$, thereupon located it at $r_{\mathrm{abs}}\approx1.5$ pc from the central supermassive black hole. The inferred distance is remarkably similar to the evaporation radius for dust grains $r_{\mathrm{evap}}\approx1$ pc in the quasar. Thus the absorber may be a probe of an inflow starting from the dusty torus and feeding the accretion disk. Both the featureless continuum and the broad emission lines are heavily reddened with $E(B-V)\approx0.66$, in contrast to the narrow emission lines whose reddening is negligible. The dusty medium could be located in between the broad and narrow emission line regions, and possibly be associated with a 'cold' narrow absorption line system detected in \ion{Ca}{2} and \ion{Na}{1} doublets nearly unshifted from the quasar systemic velocity. International audience; The CHinense Exoplanet Searching Program from Antarctica is a ground-based wide-field photometric survey using the AST3 and CSTAR telescopes located at Dome A, Antarctica. Blessed with the unparalleled observing conditions on the highest point of the Antarctic plateau, three remotely controlled, fully automatic telescopes (AST3-I, AST3-II, and CSTAR-II) carried out continuous high-precision photometric surveys through the polar nights of 2016 and 2017. During the observing seasons of 2016, a total of 26,578 light curves were obtained for stars within the area of the southern continuous viewing zone of TESS, covering an i-band magnitude range from 7.5 to 15. At m i = 10, photometric precision reaches ∼2 mmag, allowing possible discoveries of sub-Jupiter-size exoplanets. Here we report 20 stellar flares with i-band energies larger than 1034 erg detected in the 2016 data set of AST3-II, all from different sources. We model the stellar flares and calculate the durations, amplitudes, energies, and skewnesses. The flare properties and the stellar properties of their sources are presented in this work.

Quasars are high-luminosity active galactic nuclei believed to be powered by accretion of interstellar matter onto a super-massive black hole (SMBH) therein. Most of the observed energy is released in an accretion disk of inspiralling gas surrounding the SMBH. An enormous amount of fueling material is expected to be transported inwards. However, basic questions remain unanswered as to whether and how the accretion disks are supplied with external gas, since no disk-feeding inflow has hitherto been observed clearly. Here we report the discovery of highly redshifted broad absorption lines arising from neutral hydrogen and helium atoms in a small sample of quasars. Their absorption troughs show a broad range of Doppler velocities from zero extending continuously inward up to as high as $\sim 5,000$ km s$^{-1}$. We thus see through streams of cold gas moving with a radially inward velocity component that spans an immense gradient---a result of gravitational acceleration by the central SMBH. Extensive photo-ionization modeling for the archetypical object SDSS J103516.20+142200.6 indicates the inflowing gas to be dense, thick and moderately ionized, with a characteristic distance to the SMBH of $\sim 1,000$ gravitational radii, possibly overlapping or close to the outer accretion disk. Our results present the first compelling evidence for the long-sought inflow directly feeding quasars' accretion disks with external materials, likely originating from the dusty torus at a parsec scale. Our approach provides a new tool to probe the bulk of the so far elusive fueling inflows in quasars. Their studies may help address some of the fundamental questions concerning accretion physics, the onset and sustainment of quasar activity, and the SMBH growth at centers of most galaxies.

Located at Dome A, the highest point of the Antarctic plateau, the Chinese Kunlun station is considered to be one of the best ground-based photometric sites because of its extremely cold, dry, and stable atmosphere(Saunders et al. 2009). A target can be monitored from there for over 40 days without diurnal interruption during a polar winter. This makes Kunlun station a perfect site to search for short-period transiting exoplanets. Since 2008, an observatory has been built at Kunlun station and three telescopes are working there. Using these telescopes, the AST3 project has been carried out over the last six years with a search for transiting exoplanets as one of its key programs (CHESPA). In the austral winters of 2016 and 2017, a set of target fields in the Southern CVZ of TESS (Ricker et al. 2009) were monitored by the AST3-II telescope. In this paper, we introduce the CHESPA and present the first data release containing photometry of 26,578 bright stars (m_i < 15). The best photometric precision at the optimum magnitude for the survey is around 2 mmag. To demonstrate the data quality, we also present a catalog of 221 variables with a brightness variation greater than 5 mmag from the 2016 data. Among these variables, 179 are newly identified periodic variables not listed in the AAVSO databasea), and 67 are listed in the Candidate Target List(Stassun et al. 2017). These variables will require careful attention to avoid false-positive signals when searching for transiting exoplanets. Transiting extrasolar planets (exoplanets), especially those orbiting bright stars, are desired for study of the diversity of planetary compositions, internal structures and atmospheres beyond our solar system. Dome A at Antarctica is a promising site for planetary transit surveys, where the continuous darkness and the large clear-sky fraction in the winter months greatly enhance the detection efficiency. The Chinese Small Telescope ARray and the Antarctic Survey Telescopes are the first facilities that have been operated at Dome A for use in exoplanet surveys. To increase the sky coverage, a low-temperature-resistant wide-field robotic telescope, named the bright star survey telescope (BSST), has been developed to join the ongoing planetary transit survey in Antarctica. The BSST has an aperture size of 300 mm and is equipped with a large-frame 4k x 4k CCD camera to receive starlight from a 3.degrees 4 x 3.degrees 4 field of view. The BSST was operated at Lijiang observatory in April and May 2015 for a test run. Photometric precision of 3.5 mmag was achieved for stars with V similar to 11 mag using 75 s exposures. The transiting events of two Jupiter-size exoplanets, HAT-P-3b and HAT-P-12b, were observed on May 10 and May 20, 2015, respectively.

We report first results from the CHinese Exoplanet Searching Program from Antarctica (CHESPA)---a wide-field high-resolution photometric survey for transiting exoplanets carried out using telescopes of the AST3 (Antarctic Survey Telescopes times 3) project. There are now three telescopes (AST3-I, AST3-II, and CSTAR-II) operating at Dome A---the highest point on the Antarctic Plateau---in a fully automatic and remote mode to exploit the superb observing conditions of the site, and its long and uninterrupted polar nights. The search for transiting exoplanets is one of the key projects for AST3. During the Austral winters of 2016 and 2017 we used the AST3-II telescope to survey a set of target fields near the southern ecliptic pole, falling within the continuous viewing zone of the TESS mission \citep{Ricker10}. The first data release of the 2016 data, including images, catalogs and lightcurves of 26578 bright stars ($7.5\le i \le15$) was presented in \citet{Zhang18}. The best precision, as measured by the RMS of the lightcurves at the optimum magnitude of the survey ($i=10$), is around 2\,mmag. We detect 222 objects with plausible transit signals from these data, 116 of which are plausible transiting exoplanet candidates according to their stellar properties as given by the TESS Input Catalog \citep{Stassun17}, Gaia DR2 \citep{Gaia18} and TESS-HERMES spectroscopy \citep{Sharma18}. International audience; From the experiences learned in three decades of exoplanet search, wide-field transit surveys have proven to be one of the most effective ways to detect exoplanets. Wide field of view, however, suffers from high false-positive rates caused by blended eclipsing binaries. The chromaticity in eclipse depth is an effective feature to distinguish low-depth eclipsing binaries from transiting exoplanets, making multiple-band photometry follow-up advantageous before a target is passed onto more expensive spectroscopic follow-up. Moreover, a multiple-band photometric survey is itself a powerful method to find and vet planetary candidates and narrow down the candidate list of high-priority targets. In this work, we report the first results of a dual-band (Sloan-g and -i) wide-field photometry survey—the Chinese Small Telescope ARray II (CSTAR-II), an updated version of the original CSTAR. As a key component of the Chinese Exoplanet Searching Program from Antarctica, CSTAR-II has been tested thoroughly at a remote arctic site near Mohe during the winter of 2014. In total, 13,531 light curves with the best overall photometric precision of ∼3 mmag were extracted from 7721 stars in the Sloan-g and -i bands. Using a robust method, we have detected 63 variables, of which 48 are newly discovered. The dual-band photometric results as well as the stellar properties of the detected sources are provided in this work.

The three Antarctic Survey Telescopes (AST3) aim to carry out time domain imaging survey at Dome A, Antarctica. The first of the three telescopes (AST3-1) was successfully deployed on January 2012. AST3-1 is a 500\,mm aperture modified Schmidt telescope with a 680\,mm diameter primary mirror. AST3-1 is equipped with a SDSS $i$ filter and a 10k $\times$ 10k frame transfer CCD camera, reduced to 5k $\times$ 10k by electronic shuttering, resulting in a 4.3 deg$^2$ field-of-view. To verify the capability of AST3-1 for a variety of science goals, extensive commissioning was carried out between March and May 2012. The commissioning included a survey covering 2000 deg$^2$ as well as the entire Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Frequent repeated images were made of the center of the Large Magellanic Cloud, a selected exoplanet transit field, and fields including some Wolf-Rayet stars. Here we present the data reduction and photometric measurements of the point sources observed by AST3-1. We have achieved a survey depth of 19.3\,mag in 60 s exposures with 5\,mmag precision in the light curves of bright stars. The facility achieves sub-mmag photometric precision under stable survey conditions, approaching its photon noise limit. These results demonstrate that AST3-1 at Dome A is extraordinarily competitive in time-domain astronomy, including both quick searches for faint transients and the detection of tiny transit signals., 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS, the dataset is public in http://explore.china-vo.org/

We report a clear detection of He I*lambda lambda 2946, 3189, and 3889 broad absorption line (BAL) in the low-ionization BAL (LoBAL) quasar SDSS J144842.45+042403.1. We also detected new BALs, including Ly alpha, C II, and Si IV, as well as optical emission lines, such as H alpha, H beta, and [O III]. Using photoionization simulations, we constrained the physical conditions of the outflow to a hydrogen column density of N-H approximate to 10(21.3) cm(-2), an ionization parameter of U approximate to 10(-1.4), and a hydrogen number density of n(H) approximate to 10(3.6) cm(-3), and located its radial distance at r(abs) similar to 1.52 kpc from the central engine. The photoionization model predicts the presence of a Lyman limit system with H I column density of N-H (I) similar to 3.0 x 10(17)-1.2 x 10(18) cm(-2), which is confirmed by the GALEX photometry. Interestingly, we found that the [O III] emission line doublet has an outflow component at a large blueshift of v similar to 1700 km s(-1) and a width of FWHM similar to 5000 km s(-1). Assuming that we are witnessing the same outflow in both emission and absorption lines, we estimate the global covering fraction of the emission line outflow to be similar to 4%, its mass-loss rate to be similar to 70 M(circle dot)yr(-1) and its kinetic luminosity to be similar to 3.2 x 10(44) erg s(-1). SDSS J1448 +0424 is a representative example of a significant fraction of LoBAL quasars, which deserves further studies to understand the connection between the growth of supermassive black holes and the evolution of their host galaxies.

Proxima Centauri is known as the closest star from the Sun. Recently, radial velocity observations revealed the existence of an Earth-mass planet around it. With an orbital period of ~11 days, the surface of Proxima Centauri b is temperate and might be habitable. We took a photometric monitoring campaign to search for its transit, using the Bright Star Survey Telescope at the Zhongshan Station in Antarctica. A transit-like signal appearing on 2016 September 8th, is identified tentatively. Its midtime, $T_{C}=2,457,640.1990\pm0.0017$ HJD, is consistent with the predicted ephemeris based on RV orbit in a 1$\sigma$ confidence interval. Time-correlated noise is pronounced in the light curve of Proxima Centauri, affecting detection of transits. We develop a technique, in a Gaussian process framework, to gauge the statistical significance of potential transit detection. The tentative transit signal reported here, has a confidence level of $2.5\sigma$. Further detection of its periodic signals is necessary to confirm the planetary transit of Proxima Centauri b. We plan to monitor Proxima Centauri in next Polar night at Dome A in Antarctica, taking the advantage of continuous darkness. \citet{Kipping17} reported two tentative transit-like signals of Proxima Centauri b, observed by the Microvariability and Oscillation of Stars space Telescope in 2014 and 2015, respectively. The midtransit time of our detection is 138 minutes later than that predicted by their transit ephemeris. If all the signals are real transits, the misalignment of the epochs plausibly suggests transit timing variations of Proxima Centauri b induced by an outer planet in this system., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted by The Astronomical Journal

Electron momentum spectroscopy is a unique tool for imaging orbital-specific electron density of molecule in momentum space. However, the molecular geometry information is usually veiled due to the single-centered character of momentum space wavefunction of molecular orbital (MO). Here we demonstrate the retrieval of interatomic distances from the multicenter interference effect revealed in the ratios of electron momentum profiles between two MOs with symmetric and anti-symmetric characters. A very sensitive dependence of the oscillation period on interatomic distance is observed, which is used to determine F-F distance in CF4 and O-O distance in CO2 with sub-Ångström precision. Thus, using one spectrometer, and in one measurement, the electron density distributions of MOs and the molecular geometry information can be obtained simultaneously. Our approach provides a new robust tool for imaging molecules with high precision and has potential to apply to ultrafast imaging of molecular dynamics if combined with ultrashort electron pulses in the future.

Since systematic direct measurements of refractive index structure constant ( Cn2) for many climates and seasons are not available, an indirect approach is developed in which Cn2 is estimated from the mesoscale atmospheric model outputs. In previous work, we have presented an approach that a state-of-the-art mesoscale atmospheric model called Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with Monin-Obukhov Similarity (MOS) theory which can be used to estimate surface layer Cn2 over the ocean. Here this paper is focused on surface layer Cn2 over snow and sea ice, which is the extending of estimating surface layer Cn2 utilizing WRF model for ground-based optical application requirements. This powerful approach is validated against the corresponding 9-day Cn2 data from a field campaign of the 30th Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition (CHINARE). We employ several statistical operators to assess how this approach performs. Besides, we present an independent analysis of this approach performance using the contingency tables. Such a method permits us to provide supplementary key information with respect to statistical operators. These methods make our analysis more robust and permit us to confirm the excellent performances of this approach. The reasonably good agreement in trend and magnitude is found between estimated values and measurements overall, and the estimated Cn2 values are even better than the ones obtained by this approach over the ocean surface layer. The encouraging performance of this approach has a concrete practical implementation of ground-based optical applications over snow and sea ice.

The extensive study of outer- and inner-valence satellites of carbon dioxide by electron momentum spectroscopy is reported. The experiments have been performed using a high-sensitivity electron momentum spectrometer employing non-coplanar symmetric geometry at impact energy of about 1200 eV. Binding energy spectrum up to 50 eV, above the first double ionization threshold (∼37.3 eV), is presented. Four main peaks and twelve satellites have been identified including four embedded in the double ionization continuum, among which the two beyond 42 eV are observed for the first time. High accuracy symmetry-adapted-cluster configuration interaction general-R calculation with aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets has also been performed and the result is in line with the experimental ionization spectrum except the relative intensities for some of the satellites in inner-valence region. The experimental momentum profiles for both the main ionization transitions and satellites have been obtained and compared with theoretical calculations by HF and B3LYP methods with 6-311++G* and aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets. Through comparison, the detailed assignments of the satellite bands have been achieved and the pole strengths for the relevant shake-up transitions are determined experimentally for the first time.

Using newly released data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, we report the discovery of rapid infrared variability in three radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) selected from the 23 sources in the sample of Yuan et al. (2008). J0849+5108 and J0948+0022 clearly show intraday variability, while J1505+0326 has a longer measurable time scale within 180 days. Their variability amplitudes, corrected for measurement errors, are $\sim 0.1-0.2$ mag. The detection of intraday variability restricts the size of the infrared-emitting region to $\sim 10^{-3}$ pc, significantly smaller than the scale of the torus but consistent with the base of a jet. The three variable sources are exceptionally radio-loud, have the highest radio brightness temperature among the whole sample, and all show detected $\gamma$-ray emission in Fermi/LAT observations. Their spectral energy distributions resemble those of low-energy-peaked blazars, with a synchrotron peak around infrared wavelengths. This result strongly confirms the view that at least some radio-loud NLS1s are blazars with a relativistic jet close to our line of sight. The beamed synchrotron emission from the jet contributes significantly to and probably dominates the spectra in the infrared and even optical bands., Comment: To appear in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

A high-sensitivity angle and energy dispersive multichannel electron momentum spectrometer with simultaneous detection in 2π angle range is presented. A newly designed double half wedge and strip anode position-sensitive detector is employed to collect the ionized and scattered electrons passing through a 90° sector, 2π spherical electrostatic analyzer over azimuthal angle range of about 150° for each. Experimental results on argon are presented to exhibit the performance of the spectrometer.

The multi-center interference effect of three outermost molecular orbitals (MOs) of CF4 is investigated using (e, 2e) electron momentum spectroscopy. We show that the observed oscillations are directly informative of the nature of molecular structure. By fitting the experimental results, the bond length of F-F of gas phase CF4 is determined.

We present investigations on the two-center and multi-center interference effects of molecules in binary (e, 2e) experiments. The high energy resolution electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS) measurements on H2 are reported with final vibrational states resolved. The experimental momentum profiles for ionization transitions to the individual final vibrational states of the ion are obtained. The measured and calculated vibrational ratios of the cross sections deviate from Franck-Condon principle, which can be ascribed to the Young-type two-center interference. Furthermore, with the help of our latest version of EMS spectrometer which has considerably higher sensitivity and much wider momentum range from 0 to 8 a.u., we are able to extend our observations to multi-center interference effect in high symmetry molecules like NF3 and CF4 with several oscillation periods included.

The pre-retardation effects on a newly developed high-sensitivity angle and energy dispersive multichannel electron momentum spectrometer with almost 2π azimuthal angle range has been tested. Experiment on argon 3p shows significant improvement of coincident energy resolution when decelerating analyzed electrons.
