To date, thermal nanoimprint lithography (NIL) for patterning hybrid perovskites has always involved an intricate etching step of a hard stamp material or its master. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the successful nanopatterning of a perovskite film by NIL with a low-cost polymeric stamp. The stamp consists of a dichromated gelatin grating structured by holographic lithography. The one-dimensional grating is imprinted into a perovskite film at 95 °C and 90 MPa for 10 min, resulting in a high quality second-order distributed feedback (DFB) laser. The laser exhibits an excellent performance with a threshold of 81 μJ/cm2, a line width of 0.32 nm, and a pronounced linear polarization. This novel approach enables cost-effective fabrication of high-quality DFB lasers compatible with different perovskite compositions and photonic nanostructures for a wide range of applications. 3D-printed conductive structures are highly attractive due to their great potential for customizable electronic devices. While the traditional 3D printing of metal requires high temperatures to sinter metal powders or polymer/metal composites, low or room temperature processes will be advantageous to enable multi-material deposition and integration of optoelectronic applications. Herein, digital light processing technology and inkjet printing are combined as an effective strategy to fabricate customized 3D conductive structures. In this approach, a 3D-printed nanoporous (NPo) polymeric material is used as a substrate onto which a nanoparticle-based Ag ink is printed. SEM and X-ray nano computed tomography (nanoCT) measurements show that the porous morphology of the pristine NPo is retained after deposition and annealing of the Ag ink. Inductively coupled plasma with an argon/hydrogen (Ar/H2) mixture is a potential solution to many surface treatment problems, especially when encountering carbon contamination in optical X-ray and extreme ultraviolet instruments. Removing carbon contamination on multilayer thin films with Ar/H2 plasma extends the lifetime of the above devices. To further investigate the reaction between plasma and carbon, both optical emission spectroscopy and finite element method with multiphysics fields were employed. The results demonstrated that the intensities of the Balmer lines were in good agreement with the densities of the radical hydrogen atoms from the simulation model, showing a dependence on the mixing ratio. At an electrical input power of 165 W and a total pressure of 5 Pa, an optimum mixing ratio of about 35 ± 5 % hydrogen produced the highest density of hydrogen radicals, coinciding with the highest carbon removal rate. This shows that the carbon removal with Ar/H2 plasma was mainly controlled by the density of hydrogen radicals, and the mixing ratio showed a significant impact on the removal rates.

A composite material of plasmonic nanoparticles embedded in a scaffold of nano-porous silicon offers unmatched capabilities for use as a SERS substrate. The marriage of these components presents an exclusive combination of tightly focused amplification of Localised Surface Plasmon (LSP) fields inside the material with an extremely high surface-to-volume ratio. This provides favourable conditions for a single molecule or extremely low concentration detection by SERS. In this work the advantage of the composite is demonstrated by SERS detection of Methylene Blue at a concentration as low as a few picomolars. We systematically investigate the plasmonic properties of the material by imaging its morphology, establishing its composition and the effect on the LSP resonance optical spectra.

Interfacial engineering is the key to high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). While a wide range of fullerene interlayers are investigated for Pb-based counterparts with a bandgap of >1.5 eV, the role of fullerene interlayers is barely investigated in Sn-Pb mixed narrow-bandgap (NBG) PSCs. In this work, two novel solution-processed fullerene derivatives are investigated, namely indene-C60-propionic acid butyl ester and indene-C60-propionic acid hexyl ester (IPH), as the interlayers in NBG PSCs. It is found that the devices with IPH-interlayer show the highest performance with a remarkable short-circuit current density of 30.7 mA cm−2 and a low deficit in open-circuit voltage. The reduction in voltage deficit down to 0.43 V is attributed to reduced non-radiative recombination that the authors attribute to two aspects: 1) a higher conduction band offset of ≈0.2 eV (>0 eV) that hampers charge-carrier-back-transfer recombination; 2) a decrease in trap density at the perovskite/interlayer/C60 interfaces that results in reduced trap-assisted recombination. In addition, incorporating the IPH interlayer enhances charge extraction within the devices that results in considerable enhancement in short-circuit current density. Using a NBG device with an IPH interlayer, a respectable power conversion efficiency of 24.8% is demonstrated in a four-terminal all-perovskite tandem solar cell.

Dead-end filtration has proven to effectively prepare macroscopically (3.8 cm$^2$) aligned thin films from solutionbased single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). However, to make this technique broadly applicable, the role of SWCNT length and diameter must be understood. To date, most groups report the alignment of unsorted, large diameter (≈1.4 nm) SWCNTs, but systematic studies on their small diameter are rare (≈0.78 nm). In this work, films with an area of A = 3.81 cm$^2$ and a thickness of ≈40 nm are prepared from length-sorted fractions comprising of small and large diameter SWCNTs, respectively. The alignment is characterized by cross-polarized microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, absorption and Raman spectroscopy. For the longest fractions (L$_{avg}$ = 952 nm ± 431 nm, Δ = 1.58 and L$_{avg}$ = 667 nm ± 246 nm, Δ = 1.55), the 2D order parameter, S2D, values of ≈0.6 and ≈0.76 are reported for the small and large diameter SWCNTs over an area of A = 625 µm$^2$, respectively. A comparison of Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey, and Overbeek (DLVO) theory calculations with the aligned domain size is then used to propose a law identifying the required length of a carbon nanotube with a given diameter and zeta potential.

Bragg mirrors are widely applied in optical and photonic devices due to their capability of light management. However, the fabrication of Bragg mirrors is mainly accomplished by physical and chemical vapor deposition processes, which are costly and do not allow for lateral patterning. Here, the fabrication of Bragg mirrors by fully inkjet printing is reported. The photonic bandgap of Bragg mirrors is tailored by adjusting the number of bilayers in the stack and the layer thickness via simply varying printing parameters. An ultrahigh reflectance of 99% is achieved with the devices consisting of ten bilayers only, and the central wavelength of Bragg mirrors is tuned from visible into near-infrared wavelength range. Inkjet printing allows for fabricating Bragg mirrors on various substrates (e.g., glass and foils), in different sizes and variable lateral patterns. The printed Bragg mirrors not only exhibit a high reflection at designed wavelengths but also show an outstanding homogeneity in color over a large area. The approach thus enables additive manufacturing for various applications ranging from microscale photonic elements to enhanced functionality and aesthetics in large-area displays and solar technologies.

Single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) dispersed by negatively charged sodium deoxycholate (DOC) or positively charged cetrimonium bromide (CTAB) are shown to assemble into aligned films (3.8 cm²) on polycarbonate membranes by slow flow dead-end filtration. Global alignment (S2D max » 0.85) is obtained on both pristine polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) coated membranes and those with an intentional 150 nm – 600 nm groove pattern from hot-embossing. In all cases, a custom microfluidic setup capable of precise control and measurement of the volume rate, trans-membrane pressure and the filtration resistance is used to follow SWCNT film formation. Conditions associated with the formation of SWCNT crystallites or their global alignment are identified and these are discussed in terms of membrane fouling and the interaction potential between the surface of the membrane and nanotubes. Mechanoresponsive smart windows have been intensively investigated in recent years as they offer various applications for signage and light management. However, integrating a display functionality into such smart windows remains a challenge since the realization of pixels in these devices is difficult. In addition, mechanoresponsive smart windows with a high dynamic range are rarely demonstrated because they would suffer from complex fabrication processes and high costs. In this work, a novel surface modification process and digital encoding were developed for direct inkjet printing of micro-etching-masks on hydrophobic elastomers, and a pixelated haze distribution was realized. Compared to the traditional mechanoresponsive smart windows, which modify the optical performance by applied strain solely, here, a smart window with haze tunability in either static or strain-applied state is demonstrated. The work enhances the potential of the fabricated smart window to be applied in high dynamic range signage displays.

Coupling between nanoplasmonics and semiconducting materials can enhance and complement the efficiency of almost all semiconductor technologies. It has been demonstrated that such composites enhance the light coupling to nanowires, increase photocurrent in detectors, enable sub-gap detection, allow DNA detection, and produce large non-linearity. Nevertheless, the tailored fabrication using the conventional methods to produce such composites remains a formidable challenge. This work attempts to resolve that deficiency by deploying the immersion-plating method to spontaneously grown gold clusters inside nano-porous silicon (np-Si). This method allows the fabrication of thin films of np-Si with embedded gold nanoparticles (Au) and creates nanoplasmonic���semiconductor composites, np-Si/Au, with fractional volume between 0.02 and 0.13 of the metallic component. Optical scattering measurements reveal a distinctive, 200 nm broad, localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance, centered around 700 nm. Linear and non-linear properties, and their time evolution are investigated by optically pumping the LSP resonance and probing the optical response with short wavelength infra-red (2.5 ���� m) light. The ultrafast time-resolved study demonstrates unambiguously that the non-linear response is not only directly related to the LSP excitation, but strongly enhanced with respect to bare np-Si, while its strength can be tuned by varying the metallic component.

Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) discharges are part of intense research. Predicting different plasma parameters, like the distribution and temperature of the present species, is of great interest for many applications. Iodine- or halide-containing plasmas in particular have an important function, for example, in the development of mercury-free UV radiation sources. Therefore, a 2D simulation model of a xenon- and iodine-containing ICP was created by using the Finite Element Method (FEM) software COMSOL Multiphysics®. The included species and the used reactions are presented in this paper. To verify the simulation in relation to the plasma distribution, the results were compared with measurements from literature. The temperature of the lamp vessel was measured in relation to the temperature distribution and also compared with the results of the simulation. It could be shown that the simulation reproduces the plasma distribution with a maximal deviation of ≈6.5% to the measured values and that the temperature distribution in the examined area can be predicted with deviations of up to ≈24% for long vessel dimensions and ≈3% for shorter dimensions. However, despite the deviating absolute values, the general plasma behaviour is reproduced by the simulation. The simulation thus offers a fast and cost-effective method to estimate an effective geometrical range of iodine-containing ICPs.

In this paper, an efficient inductively coupled medium pressure source for ultraviolet radiation (UV-source) is demonstrated. The lamp was operated with powers up to 3 kW while the radiation and the coldest point temperature were measured. In addition, different coil geometries were investigated. Here a symmetrical and asymmetrical winding density were compared. Also the operation pressures and DC to radiation efficiencies are presented. In this work, an operation pressure of one atmosphere and an UV-efficiency (200&ndash, 380 nm) of 15.5% was achieved. This is comparable to conventional medium pressure Hg-lamp technology. The main advantage of the presented inductive lamp is the electrodeless operation and therefore the longer service life, since an electrode failure is eliminated.

Inductive plasma discharge has been a part of continuous investigations since it was discovered. Especially the E- to H-mode transition and the hysteresis behavior have been topics of research in the last few decades. In this paper, we demonstrate a way to reduce the hysteresis behavior by the usage of a microwave ignition system. With this system, a significant decrease of the needed coil current for the ignition of the inductive driven plasma is realized. For the microwave generation, a magnetron as in a conventional microwave oven is used, which offers a relatively inexpensive way for microwave ignition aid. At the measured pressure of 7.5 Pa, it was possible to reduce the needed coil current for the inductive mode transition by a factor of 3.75 compared to the mode transition current without the ignition aid. This was achieved by initiating the transition by a few seconds of microwave coupling. The performed simulations suggested that the factor can be further increased at higher pressures. That is especially interesting for plasmas that are hard to ignite or for RF-sources that cannot deliver high enough currents or frequencies for the ignition.

We present our case-study of a software defined radio transreciever for the communication in the near infrared spectrum for indoor communication. It's based on a FPGA development board with a custom transceiver. As an infrared fidelity software defined radio (IRFi-SDR) is build, several modulation schemes can be implemented. For the case-study, we investigate the on/off keying and achieve a transmission rate of 5 Mbps.
