Abstract To improve the utilization of byproduct gases in the steel plant, the coke oven gas (COG) methanation combined with blast furnace gas (BFG) and basic oxygen furnace gas (BOFG) was proposed in viewpoint of economy and environment. The optimization mathematics model based on Gibbs free energy minimization was established to predict the thermodynamic feasibility of the proposed methanation. To solve the proposed model, the convenient method was implemented by using the Gibbs module in Aspen Plus software. Effects of operation parameters on the methanation performance were revealed to identify the optimized conditions. To reduce the solid carbon concentration, it was found that the optimized conditions of temperature, pressure and stoichiometric number were 650 °C, 30 bar and 3.0, respectively. Moreover, it was discovered that 10 mol% of BFG or BOFG could be mixed into COG to obtain the maximum methane yield. In addition, it was testified that there were the good agreements between calculated results and industrial and published data, which indicated that the proposed methanation was thermodynamically feasible. Therefore, the simple and easy method was developed to evaluate the methanation operating conditions from the aspect of thermodynamic equilibrium, which provided the basic process conditions of byproduct gases methanation to enhance the steel plant efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Abstract Background There is insufficient research on how gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) affects body fat modifications in transwomen from China. It is unclear whether hormone therapy affects the prevalence of obesity and blood lipid levels within this population. The current research aimed to assess how GAHT and treatment duration had an impact on the change in and redistribution of body fat in Chinese transwomen. Methods This study included 40 transwomen who had not received GAHT and 59 who had. Body fat, blood lipid, and blood glucose levels were measured. GAHT is mainly a pharmacologic (estrogen and anti-androgen) treatment. The study also stratified participants based on the duration of GAHT to assess its impact on body fat distribution. The duration of GAHT was within one year, one to two years, two to three years, or more than three years. Results After receiving GAHT, total body fat increased by 19.65%, and the percentage of body fat increased by 17.63%. The arm, corrected leg, and leg regions showed significant increases in fat content (+ 24.02%, + 50.69%, and + 41.47%, respectively) and percentage (+ 25.19%, + 34.90%, and + 30.39%, respectively). The total visceral fat content decreased (-37.49%). Based on the diagnostic standards for a body mass index ≥ 28 or total body fat percentage ≥ 25% or 30%, the chance of developing obesity did not change significantly. Blood glucose levels significantly increased (+ 12.31%). Total cholesterol levels (-10.45%) decreased significantly. Fat changes in those who received GAHT for one to two years were significantly different from those who did not receive GAHT. Conclusion After receiving GAHT, total body fat and regional fat increased in Chinese transwomen, and the body fat distribution changed from masculine to feminine, especially during the first two years. However, neither the increase in total body fat percentage nor the decrease in visceral fat content didn’t bring about significant changes in the incidence of obesity, nor did triglycerides or low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol.

Abstract The latest clinical trials have reported conflicting outcomes regarding the effectiveness of xenon anesthesia in preventing postoperative neurocognitive dysfunction; thus, this study assessed the existing evidence. We searched the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases from inception to April 9, 2023, for randomized controlled trials of xenon anesthesia in postoperative patients. We included English-language randomized controlled studies of adult patients undergoing surgery with xenon anesthesia that compared its effects to those of other anesthetics. Duplicate studies, pediatric studies, and ongoing clinical trials were excluded. Nine studies with 754 participants were identified. A forest plot revealed that the incidence of postoperative neurocognitive dysfunction did not differ between the xenon anesthesia and control groups (P = 0.43). Abstract Background Luminal breast cancer (BC) is the predominant subtype of breast cancer with a sustained risk of late recurrence and death. Understanding the molecular mechanisms for the oncogenesis of luminal BC would improve the prognosis for this large subset of patients. SPDEF was reported to be dysregulated in breast cancers. However, the biological functions and underlying molecular mechanism of SPDEF in luminal BC remains largely unknown. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the potential roles of SPDEF underlying subtype-specific functions in BC, especially in luminal subtypes. Methods The expressions and clinicopathological characteristics of SPDEF in luminal BC patients were evaluated bioinformatically. In vitro and in vivo assays were performed to investigate the oncogenic function and stemness maintenance of SPDEF in luminal BC. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) and dual luciferase reporter assays were conducted to determine the transcription regulation of GALNT7 by SPDEF. GALNT7 levels in serum from luminal BC patients were further detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results SPDEF is markedly upregulated in luminal BC and positively associated with tumor progression and poor prognosis. Furthermore, we confirmed that SPDEF enhanced the proliferation, migration, invasion and stemness of luminal BC cells in vitro as well the tumorigenicity in vivo. Mechanistically, we demonstrated the stimulative effect of SPDEF on the progression and stemness of luminal BC, which is mediated by its directly transcriptional target GALNT7. Clinically, we verified that the GALNT7 can be used as a noninvasive diagnostic marker. Noteworthy, the combined detection of serum GALNT7 and traditional tumor markers can enhance diagnostic accuracy thus is of vital importance in the early diagnosis of luminal BC. Conclusions Our study reveals a novel mechanism by which SPDEF transcriptionally activates GALNT7 via directly binding to its promoter to promote cell proliferation, motility and stemness, and led to luminal BC tumorigenesis and poor prognosis.

Astrocytes respond to various forms of central nervous system (CNS) damage which are activated to be reactive astrocytes and participate in tissue repairing, initiation and progression of neuroinflammatory diseases in CNS through neuroprotective or neurotoxic effects. The mechanism of reactive astrocytes is mainly related to their phenotypic transformation and activation of downstream inflammatory pathways. Exploring the characterization of reactive astrocytes and the underling mechanisms may provide unique insights into the pathogenesis of neuroinflammatory diseases and to identify potential targets of clinical treatment.

Spinal cord injury causes varying degrees of motor and sensory function loss. However, there are no effective treatments for spinal cord repair following an injury. Moreover, significant preclinical advances in bioengineering and regenerative medicine have not yet been translated into effective clinical therapies. The spinal cord’s poor regenerative capacity makes repairing damaged and lost neurons a critical treatment step. Reprogramming-based neuronal transdifferentiation has recently shown great potential in repair and plasticity, as it can convert mature somatic cells into functional neurons for spinal cord injury repair in vitro and in vivo, effectively halting the progression of spinal cord injury and promoting functional improvement. However, the mechanisms of the neuronal transdifferentiation and the induced neuronal subtypes are not yet well understood. This review analyzes the mechanisms of resident cellular transdifferentiation based on a review of the relevant recent literature, describes different molecular approaches to obtain different neuronal subtypes, discusses the current challenges and improvement methods, and provides new ideas for exploring therapeutic approaches for spinal cord injury.

Although many therapeutic interventions have shown promise in treating spinal cord injury, focusing on a single aspect of repair cannot achieve successful and functional regeneration in patients following spinal cord injury . In this study, we applied a combinatorial approach for treating spinal cord injury involving neuroprotection and rehabilitation, exploiting cell transplantation and functional sensorimotor training to promote nerve regeneration and functional recovery. Here, we used a mouse model of thoracic contusive spinal cord injury to investigate whether the combination of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation and exercise training has a synergistic effect on functional restoration. Locomotor function was evaluated by the Basso Mouse Scale, horizontal ladder test, and footprint analysis. Magnetic resonance imaging, histological examination, transmission electron microscopy observation, immunofluorescence staining, and western blotting were performed 8 weeks after spinal cord injury to further explore the potential mechanism behind the synergistic repair effect. In vivo, the combination of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation and exercise showed a better therapeutic effect on motor function than the single treatments. Further investigations revealed that the combination of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation and exercise markedly reduced fibrotic scar tissue, protected neurons, and promoted axon and myelin protection. Additionally, the synergistic effects of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation and exercise on spinal cord injury recovery occurred via the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. In vitro, experimental evidence from the PC12 cell line and primary cortical neuron culture also demonstrated that blocking of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway would aggravate neuronal damage. Thus, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation combined with exercise training can effectively restore motor function after spinal cord injury by activating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway.

Objective: We sought to examine the independent correlates of long-term hospitalization in a sample of Chinese inpatients with schizophrenia (SCZ) from a gender-based perspective. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study that was carried out in a tertiary psychiatric hospital. All adult inpatients in this hospital were screened from January to March 2020, 251 of whom were identified as long-stay inpatients with SCZ (LSIS) and 224 as short-stay inpatients with SCZ (SSIS). Demographic and clinical information of the two groups was collected through medical records, scale assessments and interviews. Gender differences were analyzed, and independent correlates of long-stay between genders were explored by logistic regression analyses. Results: Compared to SSIS, greater proportions of LSIS patients were male (64.1%), single (82.1%), unemployed (81.7%) and had no family caregivers (54.2%). For LSIS per se, proportionally more males were single (88.8%), had no family caregiver (65.8%), had concomitant physical disease (65.2%) and had a history of hazardous behavior (27.3%) than their female counterparts. For females, the top independent risk factors for a long stay included poor functioning (OR = 5.9, 95% CI: 2.9–12.0), older age (OR = 4.3, 95% CI: 2.1–9.1) and being single (OR = 3.9, 95% CI: 1.8–8.4). Similar to women, both older age (OR = 5.3, 95% CI: 2.5–11.2) and poor functioning (OR = 4.0, 95% CI: 2.1–7.9) were also independent factors for long-term hospitalization of male patients; however, having no family caregiver (OR = 10.2, 95% CI: 4.6–22.6) was the primary risk factor for men. Conclusions: Both clinical and nonclinical factors play important roles in long-term hospitalization in Chinese patients with schizophrenia. There are overlaps and distinctions across genders with respect to the independent factors of long stays. These findings provide clues for developing better service strategies for this population, and highlight the importance of paying attention to gender differences in further research in this field.

Sleep plays an important role in both students' academic and personal life. Despite widespread sleep problems among young adults, few studies focus on higher education students living in campus residence. This study investigated residence-living students' sleep patterns, sleep promoting practices, sources of help seeking, and preferred ways to receive information. Results highlighted that 66.8% of the participants did not think they had enough sleep. However, only 18.9% of the students sought help. The campus residence sleep environment was challenging for many students. Problems such as uncomfortable room temperature and noise were frequently identified. Students used different strategies to promote sleep such as opening the window, reading books, listening to music, and alcohol. Efficient knowledge translation activities to facilitate the understanding of sleep physiology and sleep problem solving are needed at both the student and the organizational planning/administration level. Further studies focusing specifically on sleep environment scans and developing best practice guidelines are recommended.

Objective To explore the antibacterial effect of artemether on P. acnes in vitro and its effect on the bacterial morphology in order to provide a rationale for its use in the treatment of acne. Methods The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of artemether, doxycycline hydrochloride and their combination on P. acnes were determined by broth microdilution method, while the morphological changes of P. acnes were observed with a scanning electron microscope. Results The MICs of artemether and doxycycline hydrochloride were (117.19±76.15) μg/mL and (0.08±0.05) μg/mL, respectively. In the group of P. acnes treated with combination of artemether and doxycycline, MICs of artemether and doxycycline were (31.96±19.58) μg/mL and (0.02±0.01) μg/mL, respectively.
