Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed and fatal cancer among women worldwide. Dairy protein-derived peptides and dairy products are important parts of the daily human diet and have shown promising activities in suppressing the proliferation, migration, and invasion of breast cancer cells, both in vitro and in vivo. Most of the review literature employs meta-analysis methods to explore the association between dairy intake and breast cancer risk. However, there is a lack of comprehensive summary regarding the anti-breast cancer properties of dairy protein-derived peptides, dairy products, and dairy protein-based nanoparticles as well as their underlying mechanisms of action. Therefore, the present study discussed the breast cancer inhibitory effects and mechanisms of active peptides derived from various dairy protein sources. Additionally, the characteristics, anti-breast cancer activities and active components of several types of dairy products, including fermented milk, yogurt and cheeses, were summarized. Furthermore, the preparation methods and therapeutic effects of various dairy protein-containing nanoparticle delivery systems for breast cancer therapy were briefly described. Lastly, this work also provided an overview of what is currently known about the anti-breast cancer effects of dairy products in clinical studies. Our review will be of interest to the development of natural anticancer drugs.

During the Mesozoic, the North China Craton experienced intense tectonic movements that resulted in the formation of numerous gold deposits on the Liaodong and Jiaodong Peninsulas in northeastern China. To investigate the relationship between deep crustal structure and gold mineralization in the Liaodong Peninsula, we deployed 334 dense seismic stations in the Wulong goldfield (WLGF) with the idea of analysing numerous receiver functions at different array stations. The purpose focused on knowing the potential for gold mineralization in the area. The study revealed the following: (1) The WLGF is characterized by a crustal thickness of approximately 32 km and an average Vp/Vs ratio of 1.76. The high value of the Vp/Vs ratio near the Wulong gold deposit suggests that mantle materials have penetrated into the crust and contributed to the mineralization process. (2) A low-velocity layer located at a depth of 10–18 km below the WLGF seems to support the existence of a potentially brittle-ductile transition zone. Also, hydrothermal magma upwelling channels are observed in the upper crust beneath the Wulong gold deposit. (3) The presence of a discontinuous low-velocity layer in the middle crust beneath the Liaodong Peninsula suggests promising prospects for gold ore exploration. The receiver functions method based on a dense seismic array employed in this study can offer valuable references and guidance for the fine exploration and research of ore deposits in other regions globally.

In this article, we present a terahertz (THz) metamaterial absorber that blends two types of coordinated materials: Dirac semimetals and vanadium dioxide. Compared to other absorbers on the market, which are currently non-adjustable or have a single adjustment method, our absorber is superior because it has two coordinated modes with maximum adjustment ranges of 80.7% and 0.288 THz. The device contains four flawless absorption peaks (M1, M2, M3, and M4) spanning the frequency range of 2.0 THz to 6.0 THz, all with absorption rates greater than 99%. After calculation, the relative impedance of the device matches with that in free space, resulting in perfect absorption. In addition, our absorber has extremely excellent polarization insensitivity but is highly sensitive to changes in the environmental refractive index, with the highest environmental refractive index sensitivity of 716 GHz/RIU (gigahertz per refractive index unit). To sum up, the terahertz metamaterial absorber we showed has four perfect absorption peaks, high sensitivity, and stable polarization. This means it could be useful in areas like changing electromagnetic waves, making new sensors, and switching.

Acid fracturing is a crucial stimulation technique to enhance hydrocarbon recovery in carbonate reservoirs. However, the interaction between acid fractures and natural fractures remains complex due to the combined effects of mechanical, chemical, and fluid flow processes. This study extends a previously developed hydro-mechano-reactive flow coupled model to analyze these interactions, focusing on the influence of acid dissolution. The model incorporates reservoir heterogeneity and simulates various scenarios, including different stress differences, approaching angles, injection rates, and acid concentrations. Numerical simulations reveal distinct propagation modes for acid and hydraulic fractures, highlighting the significant influence of acid dissolution on fracture behavior. Results show that hydraulic fractures are more likely to cross natural fractures, whereas acid fractures tend to be arrested due to wormhole formation. Increasing stress differences and approaching angles promote fracture crossing, while lower angles favor diversion into natural fractures. Higher injection rates facilitate fracture crossing by increasing pressure accumulation, but excessive acid concentrations hinder fracture initiation due to enhanced wormhole formation. The study demonstrates the importance of tailoring fracturing treatments to specific reservoir conditions, optimizing parameters to enhance fracture propagation and reservoir stimulation. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of fracture mechanics in heterogeneous reservoirs and offer practical implications for improving the efficiency of hydraulic fracturing operations in unconventional reservoirs.

Objective: Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) deficiency has been known to be associated with the risk and mortality of several cancers. However, the role of 25(OH)D in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association between 25(OH)D and clinicopathologic features of PTC. Methods: Patients who underwent thyroidectomy were retrospectively reviewed. Serum 25(OH)D levels were measured within a week prior to surgery. The patients were categorized into four quartiles according to season-specific 25(OH)D levels. The association between 25(OH)D levels and clinicopathologic features of PTC was analyzed. Results: A total of 2932 patients were enrolled in the study. The 25(OH)D levels were significantly higher in patients with lymph node metastasis (LNM; P < 0.001), lateral LNM (P < 0.001), and multifocal tumors (P < 0.001). Compared to the first quartile (Q1) of 25(OH)D level, the third quartile (Q3) and the fourth quartile (Q4) showed an unadjusted OR of 1.36 (95% CI: 1.09–1.69; P = 0.006) and 1.76 (95% CI: 1.42–2.19; P < 0.001) for LNM (P for trend < 0.001), respectively. In recent years, solar energy has become popular because of its clean and renewable properties. Meanwhile, two-dimensional materials have become a new favorite in scientific research due to their unique physicochemical properties. Among them, monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), as an outstanding representative of transition metal sulfides, is a hot research topic after graphene. Therefore, we have conducted an in-depth theoretical study and design simulation using the finite-difference method in time domain (FDTD) for a solar absorber based on the two-dimensional material MoS2. In this paper, a broadband solar absorber and thermal emitter based on a single layer of molybdenum disulfide is designed. It is shown that the broadband absorption of the absorber is mainly due to the propagating plasma resonance on the metal surface of the patterned layer and the localized surface plasma resonance excited in the adjacent patterned air cavity. The research results show that the designed structure boasts an exceptional broadband performance, achieving an ultra-wide spectral range spanning 2040 nm, with an overall absorption efficiency exceeding 90%. Notably, it maintains an average absorption rate of 94.61% across its spectrum, and in a narrow bandwidth centered at 303 nm, it demonstrates a near-unity absorption rate, surpassing 99%, underscoring its remarkable absorptive capabilities. The weighted average absorption rate of the whole wavelength range (280 nm–2500 nm) at AM1.5 is above 95.03%, and even at the extreme temperature of up to 1500 K, its heat radiation efficiency is high. Furthermore, the solar absorber in question exhibits polarization insensitivity, ensuring its performance is not influenced by the orientation of incident light. These advantages can enable our absorber to be widely used in solar thermal photovoltaics and other fields and provide new ideas for broadband absorbers based on two-dimensional materials.

This paper presents a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) sensor that can be used to measure the temperature and magnetic field simultaneously, and to monitor the changes in them in the environment. When we designed the fiber structure, two circular channels of the same size were added to the fiber to facilitate the subsequent addition of materials. A gold film is added to the upper channel (ch1), and the channel is filled with a magnetic fluid (MF). The sensor can reflect changes in the temperature and magnetic field strength. The two channels containing MF and PDMS in the proposed fiber are called ch1 and ch2. The structure, mode and properties (temperature and magnetic field) were analyzed and discussed using the finite element method. By using the control variable method, the influence of Ta2O5 or no Ta2O5, the Ta2O5 thickness, the diameter of the special air hole, the distance from the fiber core and the distance between them in the displacement of the loss spectrum and the phase-matching condition of the coupling mode were studied. The resulting maximum temperature sensitivity is 6.3 nm/°C (SPR peak 5), and the maximum magnetic field sensitivity is 40 nm/Oe (SPR peak 4). Because the sensor can respond to temperature and magnetic field changes in the environment, it can play an important role in special environmental monitoring, industrial production and other fields.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) still suffer from varying degrees of optical and electrical losses. To enhance the light decoupling and capture ability of Planar PSCs, an ultra-thin PSC structure with an Al2O3 pyramid anti-reflection layer (Al2O3 PARL) is proposed. The effect of the structure of the Al2O3 PARL on the photoelectric performance of PSCs was investigated by changing various parameters. Under the AM1.5 solar spectrum (300–800 nm), the average light absorption rates and quantum efficiency (QE) of PSCs containing pyramid-array textured rear layers (PARLs) were significantly higher than those of planar PSCs. The Al2O3 PARL-based PSCs achieved a light absorption rate of 96.05%. Additionally, electrical simulations were performed using the finite element method (FEM) to calculate the short-circuit current density (JSC), open-circuit voltage (VOC), and maximum power (Pmax). Based on the maximum value of the average light absorbance, the geometric structure of the Al2O3 pyramid PSCs was optimized, and the optimization results coincided with the JSC and QE results. The results of the electrical simulation indicated that the maximum JSC was 23.54 mA/cm2. Additionally, the JSC of the Al2O3 pyramid PSCs was 22.73% higher than that of planar PSCs, resulting in a photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.34%. As a result, the photoelectric conversion rate of the solar cells increased from 14.01% to 17.19%. These findings suggest that the presence of the Al2O3 PARL enhanced photon absorption, leading to an increase in electron–hole pairs and ultimately improving the photocurrent of the solar cells.

Abstract Background Cervical lymph node metastasis (CLNM) is common in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC); however, the efficiency to distinguish CLNM before surgery is limited. T cell exhaustion, characterized by the overexpression of immune checkpoints, plays a critical role in the immune evasion of tumors. The aim of this study is to analyze the association between serum levels of soluble immune checkpoints (sICs) and CLNM in DTC patients. Methods Levels of sICs in serum of 71 DTC patients and 56 healthy volunteers were analyzed by ELISA. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells and cervical lymph nodes of DTC patients were isolated and their expression of sICs were analyzed. Lymphocytes in cervical lymph nodes were analyzed for immune checkpoints expression and transcription of exhaustion‐associated factors. 30 out of 71 DTC patients were followed up from 3 to 9 months after the operation, and postoperative sTIM‐3 were analyzed. Results Four sICs, including LAG‐3, PD‐1, PD‐L1, and TIM‐3, were increased in DTC patients. All four sICs exhibited higher sensitivity at discriminating CLNM than cervical ultrasound. In the patient‐matched comparison, higher sTIM‐3 levels were observed in tumor‐involved lymph nodes (TILNs) than in normal lymph nodes (nLNs). T lymphocytes in TILNs had higher TIM‐3 surface expression and increased secretion of sTIM‐3 than those in patient‐matched nLNs. Finally, postoperative serum sTIM‐3 levels were decreased in DTC patients with CLNM compared to their preoperative levels. Conclusion Serum levels of sICs, especially sTIM‐3, could help to predict CLNM and provide evidence for surgical decision‐making in DTC.

Abstract Molecular diagnostics for crop diseases can guide the precise application of pesticides, thereby reducing pesticide usage while improving crop yield, but tools are lacking. Here, we report an in-field molecular diagnostic tool that uses a cheap colorimetric paper and a smartphone, allowing multiplexed, low-cost, rapid detection of crop pathogens. Rapid nucleic acid amplification-free detection of pathogenic RNA is achieved by combining toehold-mediated strand displacement with a metal ion-mediated urease catalysis reaction. We demonstrate multiplexed detection of six wheat pathogenic fungi and an early detection of wheat stripe rust. When coupled with a microneedle for rapid nucleic acid extraction and a smartphone app for results analysis, the sample-to-result test can be completed in ~10 min in the field. Importantly, by detecting fungal RNA and mutations, the approach allows to distinguish viable and dead pathogens and to sensitively identify mutation-carrying fungicide-resistant isolates, providing fundamental information for precision crop disease management.

The Jiaodong gold province, situated in the southeastern margin of the North China Craton, is globally renowned for its substantial gold reserves exceeding 5,000 tonnes. The Zhaoxian gold deposit is part of the significant Jiaojia gold belt within the Jiaodong gold province. Fieldwork has identified four distinct stages of ore formation in this study: an early barren quartz vein stage (Stage 1) containing fine-grained pyrite; a gold-bearing stage (Stage 2) consisting of quartz, pyrite, and native gold; a polymetallic sulfide-rich stage (Stage 3) comprising quartz, polymetallic sulfides, and native gold; and a late-stage (Stage 4) primarily composed of quartz and calcite with minimal pyrite content. We conducted fluid inclusion analysis using microthermometry and Raman spectroscopy techniques to examine the fluid characteristics. In-situ analysis of trace elements in pyrite was performed to investigate the fluid composition and evolution. Additionally, we determined the sulfur isotope composition in pyrite to analyze the source of sulfur. Our findings indicate that the ore-forming fluid in the Zhaoxian gold deposit belongs to a medium-to-low-salinity H₂O-NaCl-CO₂-CH₄ system. Fluctuations in Au and As concentrations observed along with oscillating zones and sulfide inclusions during Stage 2 suggest potential fluid boiling processes occurring during mineralization. High concentrations of Ag, Cu, Zn, Cd, In, Pb, and Bi without oscillating zones during Stage 3 imply precipitation of polymetallic sulfides under stable fluid conditions. The δ34S values observed in the Zhaoxian gold deposit are slightly higher than those found in granitoids from other areas within Jiaodong but similar to those seen in other deposits within the Jiaojia gold belt region. In conclusion, magmatic-hydrothermal ore-forming fluids were involved along with significant fluid-rock interaction during metallogenic processes of the Zhaoxian gold deposit.

Stay-green (SG) in wheat is a beneficial trait that increases yield and stress tolerance. However, conventional phenotyping techniques limited the understanding of its genetic basis. Spectral indices (SIs) as non-destructive tools to evaluate crop temporal senescence provide an alternative strategy. Here, we applied SIs to monitor the senescence dynamics of 565 diverse wheat accessions from anthesis to maturation stages over 2 field seasons. Four SIs (normalized difference vegetation index, green normalized difference vegetation index, normalized difference red edge index, and optimized soil-adjusted vegetation index) were normalized to develop relative stay-green scores (RSGS) as the SG indicators. An RSGS-based genome-wide association study identified 47 high-confidence quantitative trait loci (QTL) harboring 3,079 single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with SG and 1,085 corresponding candidate genes. Among them, 15 QTL overlapped or were adjacent to known SG-related QTL/genes, while the remaining QTL were novel. Notably, a set of favorable haplotypes of SG-related candidate genes such as TraesCS2A03G1081100, TracesCS6B03G0356400, and TracesCS2B03G1299500 are increasing following the Green Revolution, further validating the feasibility of the pipeline. This study provided a valuable reference for further quantitative SG and genetic research in diverse wheat panels.

The main development direction for current solar technology is to improve absorption efficiency and stability. To bridge this gap, we design in this paper a structure consisting of two multilayer disc stacks of different radii, one topped by a TiO2 disc and the other by a cascade disc stack composed of SiO2-Ti, for use in thermal emitters and solar absorbers. The innovation of our work is the exploitation of multiple Fabry–Perot resonances in SiO2-Ti cascade optical cavities to develop absorber bandwidths while investigating it in the field of thermal emission and many aspects affecting the efficiency of the absorber. The finite difference time domain method (FDTD) results show absorption averages as high as 96.68% with an absorption bandwidth of 2445 nm (A > 90%) at 280 nm–3000 nm solar incidence and even higher weighted averages as high as 98.48% at 1.5 solar air mass (AM) illumination. In order to investigate the physical mechanisms of our designed absorber in a high absorption state, we analyzed the electric field distributions of its four absorption peaks and concluded that its high absorption is mainly caused by the coupling of multiple Fabry–Perot resonance modes in the cascaded optical cavity. While considering this high efficiency, we also investigated the effect of complex environments such as extreme high temperatures and changes in the angle of incidence of the absorber, and the results show that the thermal radiation efficiency of the emitter is 96.79% at an operating temperature of 1700 K, which is higher than its thermal radiation efficiency of 96.38% at an operating temperature of 1500 K, which is a perfect result. On the other hand, we conclude that the designed structure is independent of polarization, while the absorber still has 88.22% absorption at incidence angles of up to 60°, both in transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. The results of this study can help improve the performance of future solar absorbers and expand their application areas.

Rhizoctonia cerealis is a soilborne fungus that can cause sharp eyespot in wheat, resulting in massive yield losses found in many countries. Due to the lack of resistant cultivars, fungicides have been widely used to control this pathogen. However, chemical control is not environmentally friendly and is costly. Meanwhile, the lack of genetic transformation tools has hindered the functional characterization of virulence genes. In this study, we attempted to characterize the function of virulence genes by two transient methods, host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) and spray-induced gene silencing (SIGS), which use RNA interference to suppress the pathogenic development. We identified ten secretory orphan genes from the genome. After silencing these ten genes, only the RcOSP1 knocked-down plant significantly inhibited the growth of R. cerealis. We then described RcOSP1 as an effector that could impair wheat biological processes and suppress pathogen-associated molecular pattern–triggered immunity in the infection process. ABSTRACT Wheat sharp eyespot caused by Rhizoctonia cerealis is primarily a severe threat to worldwide wheat production. Currently, there are no resistant wheat cultivars, and the use of fungicides is the primary method for controlling this disease. Elucidating the mechanisms of R. cerealis pathogenicity can accelerate the pace of the control of this disease. Long intergenic noncoding RNAs (lincRNAs) that function in plant-pathogen interactions might provide a new perspective. We systematically analyzed lincRNAs and identified a total of 1,319 lincRNAs in R. cerealis. We found that lincRNAs are involved in various biological processes, as shown by differential expression analysis and weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA). Next, one of nine hub lincRNAs in the blue module that was related to infection and growth processes, MSTRG.4380.1, was verified to reduce R. cerealis virulence on wheat by a host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) assay. Following that, RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) analysis revealed that the significantly downregulated genes in the MSTRG.4380.1 knockdown lines were associated mainly with infection-related processes, including hydrolase, transmembrane transporter, and energy metabolism activities. Additionally, 23 novel microRNAs (miRNAs) were discovered during small RNA (sRNA) sequencing (sRNA-Seq) analysis of MSTRG.4380.1 knockdown, and target prediction of miRNAs suggested that MSTRG.4380.1 does not act as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA). This study performed the first genome-wide identification of R. cerealis lincRNAs and miRNAs. It confirmed the involvement of a lincRNA in the infection process, providing new insights into the mechanism of R. cerealis infection and offering a new approach for protecting wheat from R. cerealis. IMPORTANCE Rhizoctonia cerealis, the primary causal agent of wheat sharp eyespot, has caused significant losses in worldwide wheat production. Since no resistant wheat cultivars exist, chemical control is the primary method. However, this approach is environmentally unfriendly and costly. RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated pathogenicity gene silencing has been proven to reduce the growth of Rhizoctonia and provides a new perspective for disease control. Recent studies have shown that lincRNAs are involved in various biological processes across species, such as biotic and abiotic stresses. Therefore, verifying the function of lincRNAs in R. cerealis is beneficial for understanding the infection mechanism. In this study, we reveal that lincRNAs could contribute to the virulence of R. cerealis, which provides new insights into controlling this pathogen.

IntroductionZinc (Zn) deficiency causes serious diseases in people who rely on cereals as their main food source. However, the grain zinc concentration (GZnC) in wheat is low. Biofortification is a sustainable strategy for reducing human Zn deficiency.MethodsIn this study, we constructed a population of 382 wheat accessions and determined their GZnC in three field environments. Phenotype data was used for a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using a 660K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array, and haplotype analysis identified an important candidate gene for GZnC.ResultsWe found that GZnC of the wheat accessions showed an increasing trend with their released years, indicating that the dominant allele of GZnC was not lost during the breeding process. Nine stable quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for GZnC were identified on chromosomes 3A, 4A, 5B, 6D, and 7A. And an important candidate gene for GZnC, namely, TraesCS6D01G234600, and GZnC between the haplotypes of this gene showed, significant difference (P ≤ 0.05) in three environments.DiscussionA novel QTL was first identified on chromosome 6D, this finding enriches our understanding of the genetic basis of GZnC in wheat. This study provides new insights into valuable markers and candidate genes for wheat biofortification to improve GZnC.

The development and deployment of diverse resistance sources in new wheat cultivars underpin the durable control of stripe rust. In the present study, two loci for adult plant resistance (APR), QYrSM155.1 and QYrSM155.2, were identified in the Chinese wheat breeding line Shaanmai 155. QYrSM155.1 was mapped to a 3.0-cM interval between the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers AX-109583610 and AX-110907562 on chromosome arm 2BL. QYrSM155.2 was mapped to a 2.1-cM interval flanked by the SNP markers AX-110378556 and AX-86173526 on chromosome arm 7AS. A genome-wide association study was used to identify markers associated with APR in a panel of 411 spring wheat lines. Thirteen and 11 SNPs were significantly associated with QYrSM155.1 and QYrSM155.2, respectively, corresponding to physical intervals of 653.75–655.52 Mb on 2BL and 81.63–83.93 Mb on 7AS. To characterize the haplotype variation and the distribution of these QTL, haplotype analysis was performed based on these SNPs in an independent panel of 1101 worldwide wheat accessions. Three major haplotypes (2B_h1, 2B_h2, and 2B_h3) for QYrSM155.1 and four major haplotypes (7A_h1, 7A_h2, 7A_h3, and 7A_h4) for QYrSM155.2 were identified. Accessions individually harboring QYrSM155.1_h1 and QYrSM155.2_h1 haplotypes and their combination displayed resistance. Additional assays of 1306 current Chinese cultivars and breeding lines using markers flanking QYrSM155.1 and QYrSM155.2 indicated that the resistance haplotypes of the two QTL were present in respectively 1.45% and 14.16% of lines. Increasing resistance haplotype frequencies at these two loci using marker-assisted selection should benefit wheat production in China.

• Stripe rust caused substantial yield losses in China. • P. striiformis is highly variable and the change from avirulence to virulence. • Different comprehensive control strategies were adopted in different epidemic region. Stripe (yellow) rust caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici occurs in almost all wheat-producing regions of the world. Severe countrywide epidemics in China have caused substantial yield losses. Growing resistant cultivars is the best strategy to control this disease but the pathogen can overcome resistance in wheat cultivars. The high variation in the virulence of the pathogen combined with the large areas of susceptible wheat cultivars enables the pathogen population to increase rapidly and disperse over long distances under favorable environmental conditions, resulting in severe pandemics within cropping seasons. Current stripe rust control measures are based on many years of research including the underlying epidemiology regarding year-to-year survival of the pathogen, pathways of pathogen dispersal within seasons and years, the role of P. striiformis sexual hybridization, the use of resistance sources in breeding programs, and year-round surveillance of national wheat crops that are present in different parts of the country throughout the year. All these strategies depend on accurate prediction of epidemics, more precise use of fungicides to meet national requirements and better deployment of resistance genes. New ideas with potential application in sustainable protection of stripe rust include negative regulatory gene editing, resistance gene overexpression and biological control based on microbiomes.

Background: Multiple studies have reported the increased incidence of thyroid cancer in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). However, the underlying risk factors of concomitant thyroid cancer in patients with PHPT remain unknown. The primary aim of this study was to examine the records of patients with PHPT to identify characteristics that correlated with the presence of coexisting thyroid nodules, and which may have an implication for the prediction of thyroid cancer. Methods: Medical records of consecutive patients with PHPT (n = 318) were reviewed from January 2010 to September 2020 in two tertiary medical centers in China. Patient clinicopathological and biological data were collected and analyzed. Results: Of a total of 318 patients with PHPT, 105 (33.0%) patients had thyroid nodules and 26 (8.2%) patients were concomitant with thyroid cancer. A total of 38 thyroid nodules taken from 26 patients were pathologically assessed to be well-differentiated papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), with 81% being papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). In 79% (30/38) of these cancers, thyroid nodules were considered suspicious following preoperative ultrasound. Multinomial logistic regression analysis revealed that female gender was associated with increased risk of thyroid nod ules (OR = 2.13, 95% CI: 1.13–3.99, P = 0.019), while lower log-transformed parathyroid hormone levels were an independent predictor of thyroid cancer in patients with PHP T (OR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.26–0.93, P = 0.028). Conclusion: In conclusion, we observed a relatively high prevalence of thyroid cancer in our cohort of Chinese patients with PHPT. Evaluation of thyroid nodules by preoperative ultrasound may be advisable in patients with PHPT, particularly for females and patients with modestly elevated serum parathyroid hormone levels.

Background: Multiple targeted therapeutics are available for radioiodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (RAIR-DTC), but it remains unclear which treatment is optimal to achieve long-term survival.Methods: A systematic search of the PubMed, Embase, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases was conducted to identify eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy and safety of targeted treatments for patients with RAIR-DTC from inception to April, 2022. Data were extracted by following the recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis guidelines. We calculated the odds ratio (OR) or hazard ratio (HR), its corresponding 95% credible intervals (CrI), and the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) to indicate ranking probability using Bayesian network meta-analyses. The primary outcome was progression-free survival (PFS). The secondary outcomes were overall survival (OS), objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), and grade 3 or higher adverse events.Results: A total of 12 eligible RCTs involved 1,959 patients and 13 treatments: apatinib, cabozantinib, anlotinib, nintedanib, lenvatinib, lenvatinib with low dose (LD), sorafenib, sorafenib plus everolimus, donafenib (200 mg), donafenib (300 mg), pazopanib (continuous), pazopanib (intermittent), and vandetanib. Pooled analyses indicated that targeted therapeutics significantly prolonged PFS and OS in patients with RAIR-DTC (0.31, 0.21–0.41; 0.69, 0.53–0.85, respectively) compared with placebo. Network meta-analyses indicated that lenvatinib showed the most favorable PFS, with significant differences versus sorafenib (0.33, 0.23-0.48), vandetanib (0.31, 0.20–0.49), nintedanib (0.30, 0.15–0.60), and placebo (0.19, 0.15–0.25), while apatinib was most likely to be ranked first for prolonging OS with a SUCRA of 0.90. Lenvatinib showed the highest ORR (66%, 61%–70%), followed by anlotinib (59%, 48%–70%) and apatinib (54%, 40%–69%). Lenvatinib caused the most adverse events of grade 3 or higher, followed by lenvatinib (LD) and apatinib. Different toxicity profiles of individual treatment were also revealed.Conclusion: This network meta-analysis suggests that lenvatinib and apatinib were associated with the best progression-free survival and overall survival benefits, respectively, for patients with RAIR-DTC, compared with other targeted therapeutics. Ectopic parathyroid adenoma, though rare, is one of the causes of persistent hyperparathyroidism and recurrence of hyperparathyroidism. Ectopic parathyroid glands can be seen in thymus, thyroid, and mediastinum. However, ectopic parathyroid adenoma occurred in the posterior superior mediastinum is extremely rare. Here, we report a case of primary hyperparathyroidism caused by ectopic parathyroid adenoma located in the posterior superior mediastinum. Serum parathyroid hormone, calcium, and vitamin D levels of the patient was followed up for one year.

BackgroundUse of the novel transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) is increasing worldwide. Although several studies have compared safety and efficacy of TOETVA and other approaches, most focused on comparisons in the context of unilateral thyroidectomy. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare the safety and surgical completeness of TOETVA with conventional open thyroidectomy (COT) in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) undergoing total thyroidectomy and central neck dissection.MethodsThe medical records of patients who underwent TOETVA or COT by a single surgeon between June 2017 and October 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients were diagnosed with PTC and underwent total thyroidectomy with central neck dissection. Propensity score-matching (PSM) was used to reduce potential selection bias and to adjust for differences in baseline clinicopathological characteristics.ResultsAfter PSM, 84 (TOETVA: 28; COT: 56) patients remained in the study population. Wheat crops in China are constantly challenged by stripe rust. Deployment of cultivars with diverse resistances is the best strategy to control the disease. A recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from a cross between the resistant cultivar Chakwal 86 and susceptible landrace Mingxian 169 was studied in multiple environments to examine the underlying genetics and to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for stripe rust resistance. One hundred and twenty-eight RILs were genotyped with wheat 35K SNP array and a genome-wide linkage map with 1480 polymorphic SNP markers, or bins, was constructed. Two major QTL on chromosomes 1BL and 3BS, and one minor QTL on 6BS had significant effects in reducing stripe rust severity. The QTL were validated using composite interval mapping (CIM) and inclusive composite interval mapping (ICIM). These methods explained 59.0%–74.1% of the phenotype variation in disease response. The QTL on chromosome 1BL was confirmed to be Yr29/Lr46 and the one on 3BS was the resistance allele identified in CIMMYT germplasm but was not Yr30/Sr2. The QTL on 6BS probably corresponded to previously known QTL. RILs with combined QTL were more resistant than those with single or no QTL. Kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) assays for the QTL with largest effect QTL on chromosome 3BS were performed on a subset of RILs and 150 unrelated wheat lines. The QTL on 3BS with its linked KASP markers can be used in marker-assisted selection to improve stripe rust resistance in breeding programs. Crown rot (CR) is a soil-borne disease of wheat in arid and semiarid areas of the world. The incidence rate and severity of CR are increasing with each passing year, which seriously threatens the safety of world wheat production. Here, 522 wheat varieties/lines representing genetic diversity were used to identify and evaluate the resistance source to CR disease. Six varieties, including Zimai 12, Xinong 509, Mazhamai, Sifangmai, and Dawson, were classified as resistant ® to CR. Seventy-nine varieties were classified as moderately resistant (MR) to CR, accounting for 15.13% of the tested varieties. The wheat 660 K SNP array was used to identify resistance loci by genome-wide association analysis (GWAS). A total of 33 SNPs, located on chromosomes 1A, 1B, 1D, 4A, and 4D, were significantly correlated with seedling resistance to CR in two years. Among them, one SNP on chromosome 1A and nine SNPs on chromosome 1B showed most significant resistance to disease, phenotypic variance explained (PVE) by these SNPs were more than 8.45%. Except that significant locus AX-110436287 and AX109621209 on chromosome 1B and AX-94692276 on 1D are close to the already reported QTL, other SNPs are newly discovered resistance loci. These results could lay a strong theoretical foundation for the genetic improvement and breeding for CR resistance in wheat.

Stress shadowing affects the simultaneous propagation of fractures from multiple perforation clusters. Employing uniform perforation parameters for all clusters cause the unbalanced growth of fractures, which arouses the demand of optimizing non-uniform perforation parameters. An optimization workflow combining a fracture propagation model and the particle swarm optimization method (PSO) is proposed for multi-cluster fracturing in this study. The fracture model considers the coupling of rock deformation and fluid flow along the wellbore and fractures, and it is solved by using the Newton iteration method. The optimization is performed by taking the variance of multiple fracture lengths as fitness value function in the frame of the PSO method. Numerical results show that using the same spacings and perforation parameters for all clusters is detrimental to the balanced growth of multiple fractures. The variance of fracture lengths drops greatly through optimization of cluster spacings and perforation number/diameter. Properly increasing the spacing and perforation number/diameter for the middle clusters promotes the balanced growth of multiple fractures. This study provides an efficient optimization workflow for multi-cluster fracturing treatment in horizontal wells.

Cytology in China developed from nothing and underwent a long journey from gynecologic cytology to that of all organs, laying a solid foundation for new developments in the 21st century. Thyroid fine-needle aspiration (FNA) was primarily developed in an endocrinology department and then in the clinical laboratory department or pathology department in the 1970–80s. Wrights staining is popular in endocrine and clinical laboratory departments, while hematoxylin and eosin staining is common in pathology. Liquid based cytology is not common in thyroid FNA cytology, while BRAFV600E mutation analysis has been the most popular molecular test. The history and practice of thyroid FNA practice in China were reviewed based on retrospective study of the practice in Qilu Hospital of Shandong University.

Rock yielding may well take place during hydraulic fracturing in deep reservoirs. The prevailing models based on the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) are incapable of describing the evolution process of hydraulic fractures accurately. In this paper, a hydro-elasto-plastic model is proposed to investigate the hydraulic fracture propagation in deep reservoirs. The Drucker–Prager plasticity model, Darcy’s law, cubic law and cohesive zone model are employed to describe the plastic deformation, matrix flow, fracture flow and evolution of hydraulic fractures, respectively. Combining the embedded discrete fracture model (EDFM), extended finite element method (XFEM) and finite volume method, a hybrid numerical scheme is presented to carry out simulations. A dual-layer iterative procedure is developed based on the fixed-stress split method, Picard iterative method and Newton–Raphson iterative method. The iterative procedure is used to deal with the coupling between nonlinear deformation with fracture extension and fluid flow. The proposed model is verified against analytical solutions and other numerical simulation results. A series of numerical cases are performed to investigate the influences of rock plasticity, internal friction angle, dilatancy angle and permeability on hydraulic fracture propagation. Finally, the proposed model is extended to simulate multiple hydraulic fracture propagation. The result shows that plastic deformation can enhance the stress-shadowing effect.

In this study, a coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical model to simulate multiple hydraulic fracture propagation is presented. Fracture propagation with elastic deformation is described by using a displacement discontinuity method. The temperature distribution and induced thermal stress are calculated via a semi-analytical method in an explicit way. An iterative scheme is proposed to solve the coupling between fracture propagation with fluid flow and induced thermal stress. The numerical model is validated against related analytical solutions. Several numerical cases are modeled to investigate the controlling factors for uniform growth of multiple fractures. Results show that using non-uniform fracture spacings and proper increasing the spacing for fractures away from the heel of wellbore promote the uniform growth of multiple fractures by comparison with using uniform fracture spacings. Increasing the perforation diameter for the middle cluster also works. Besides, single-wing fracturing could greatly improve the uniform growth of multiple hydraulic fractures. Finally, it shows that the thermal stress has a significant influence on fracture geometrical size but has limited effect on fracture propagation path. In addition, the thermal effect promotes the uniform growth of multiple fractures.

Cyclic nucleotide gated channels (CNGCs) play multifaceted roles in plants, particularly with respect to signaling processes associated with abiotic stress signaling and during host-pathogen interactions. Despite key roles during plant survival and response to environment, little is known about the activity and function of CNGC family in common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), a key stable food around the globe. In this study, we performed a genome-wide identification of CNGC family in wheat and identified a total 47 TaCNGCs in wheat, classifying these genes into four major groups (I–IV) with two sub-groups (IVa and IVb). Sequence analysis revealed the presence of several conserved motifs, including a phosphate binding cassette (PBC) and a “hinge” region, both of which have been hypothesized to be critical for the function of wheat CNGCs. During wheat infection with Pst, the transcript levels of TaCNGC14 and TaCNGC16, both members of group IVb, showed significant induction during a compatible interaction, while a reduction in gene expression was observed in incompatible interactions. In addition, TaCNGC14 and TaCNGC16 mRNA accumulation was significantly influenced by exogenously applied hormones, including abscisic acid (ABA), methyl jasmonate (MeJA), and salicylic acid (SA), suggesting a role in hormone signaling and/or perception. Silencing of TaCNGC14 and TaCNGC16 limited Pst growth and increased wheat resistance against Pst. The results presented herein contribute to our understanding of the wheat CNGC gene family and the mechanism of TaCNGCs signaling during wheat-Pst interaction.

Fluid-solid coupling is ubiquitous in the process of fluid flow underground and has a significant influence on the development of oil and gas reservoirs. To investigate these phenomena, the coupled mathematical model of solid deformation and fluid flow in fractured porous media is established. In this study, the discrete fracture model (DFM) is applied to capture fluid flow in the fractured porous media, which represents fractures explicitly and avoids calculating shape factor for cross flow. In addition, the extended finite element method (XFEM) is applied to capture solid deformation due to the discontinuity caused by fractures. More importantly, this model captures the change of fractures aperture during the simulation, and then adjusts fluid flow in the fractures. The final linear equation set is derived and solved for a 2D plane strain problem. Results show that the combination of discrete fracture model and extended finite element method is suited for simulating coupled deformation and fluid flow in fractured porous media.

Stripe rust or yellow rust (YR), caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), is one of the most important diseases of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Widespread deployment of resistant cultivars is the best means of achieving durable disease control. The red grain, spring wheat cultivar Napo 63 produced by CIMMYT in the 1960s shows a high level of adult-plant resistance to stripe rust in the field. To elucidate the genetic basis of resistance in this cultivar we evaluated 224 F2:3 lines and 175 F2:6 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between Napo 63 and the Pst-susceptible line Avocet S. The maximum disease severity (MDS) data of F2:3 lines and the relative area under the disease progress curve (rAUDPC) data of RILs were collected during the 2014–2015 and 2015–2016 wheat growing seasons, respectively. Combined bulked segregant analysis and 90K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays placed 275 of 511 polymorphic SNPs on chromosome 2B. Sixty four KASP markers selected from the 275 SNPs and 76 SSR markers on 2B were used to identify a chromosome region associated with rust response. A major effect QTL, named Qyrnap.nwafu-2BS, was identified by inclusive composite interval mapping and was preliminarily mapped to a 5.46 cM interval flanked by KASP markers 90K-AN34 and 90K-AN36 in chromosome 2BS. Fourteen KASP markers more closely linked to the locus were developed following a 660K SNP array analysis. The QTL region was finally narrowed to a 0.9 cM interval flanked by KASP markers 660K-AN21 and 660K-AN57 in bin region 2BS-1-0.53. The resistance of Napo 63 was stable across all environments, and as a QTL, explained an average 66.1% of the phenotypic variance in MDS of F2:3 lines and 55.7% of the phenotypic variance in rAUDPC of F5:6 RILs. The short genetic interval and flanking KASP markers developed in the study will facilitate marker-assisted selection, gene pyramiding, and eventual positional cloning of Qyrnap.nwafu-2BS.

Applying the potential theory and the superposition principle, the authors derived the linear productivity equations of staged multi-cluster fractured horizontal well considering finite and infinite conductivity fractures, respectively. The cluster yields and total yield were obtained by solving these equations numerically. A concrete example is used to analyze the productivity distribution of the fractured horizontal well and the influence of fracture parameters on it. When the fracture conductivities are infinite, the total productivity decreases significantly with the decrease of all fractures' half-lengths; outer fractures near the endpoints of the horizontal wells contribute most to the total productivity, and fractures on the edges contribute more than the middle ones within the same stage. When the fracture conductivities are finite, the contribution of outer fractures near the endpoints of the horizontal wells to the total productivity decreases, and the contribution of middle fractures within each stage increases significantly, but the overall distribution characteristics are in accord with the former case. Fracture conductivities have a great influence on the productivity, but they are not linearly correlated. Three stages and two clusters per stage can ensure high productivity, and during fracturing design, one should try to increase fracture half-lengths and fracture conductivities, especially for outer fractures near the endpoints of the horizontal well, and there exists an optimal value for the fracture conductivities. The Yr26 gene, conferring resistance to all currently important races of Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst) in China, was previously mapped to wheat chromosome deletion bin C-1BL-6-0.32 with low-density markers. In this study, collinearity of wheat to Brachypodium distachyon and rice was used to develop markers to saturate the chromosomal region containing the Yr26 locus, and a total of 2,341 F2 plants and 551 F2∶3 progenies derived from Avocet S×92R137 were used to develop a fine map of Yr26. Wheat expressed sequence tags (ESTs) located in deletion bin C-1BL-6-0.32 were used to develop sequence tagged site (STS) markers. The EST-STS markers flanking Yr26 were used to identify collinear regions of the rice and B. distachyon genomes. Wheat ESTs with significant similarities in the two collinear regions were selected to develop conserved markers for fine mapping of Yr26. Thirty-one markers were mapped to the Yr26 region, and six of them cosegregated with the resistance gene. Marker orders were highly conserved between rice and B. distachyon, but some rearrangements were observed between rice and wheat. Two flanking markers (CON-4 and CON-12) further narrowed the genomic region containing Yr26 to a 1.92 Mb region in B. distachyon chromosome 3 and a 1.17 Mb region in rice chromosome 10, and two putative resistance gene analogs were identified in the collinear region of B. distachyon. The markers developed in this study provide a potential target site for further map-based cloning of Yr26 and should be useful in marker assisted selection for pyramiding the gene with other resistance genes.
