Abstract Unraveling biodiversity patterns and their driving processes is paramount in ecology and biogeography. However, there remains a limited understanding regarding the underlying mechanisms of community assembly, particularly in alpine streams where significant elevation gradients and habitat heterogeneity exist. We investigated the patterns and drivers of beta diversity, explicitly focusing on taxonomic and functional diversity, in the three parallel rivers region in China. We employed a beta diversity partitioning approach to examine the turnover and nestedness components of beta diversity and further deconstructed the diatom community into attached and unattached groups. Our results revealed distinct diversity patterns and drivers for taxonomic and functional beta diversity. Specifically, taxonomic beta diversity was mainly driven by the turnover component affected by spatial processes, whereas functional beta diversity was dominated by the nestedness component affected by environmental processes. Furthermore, our analysis of the division of the whole communities demonstrated that the varying responses of benthic diatoms with different attached abilities to environmental filtering, dispersal limitation, and directional flow were the essential reasons for shaping the biodiversity patterns of species turnover and functional nestedness in the alpine stream. Our findings suggested that partitioning beta diversity and dividing the entire community can more deeply infer underlying community assembly processes, thereby providing valuable insights into understanding biodiversity patterns, drivers, and conservation strategies.

Objective: This study aims to compare the efficacy of two insulin administration methods — continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) and multiple daily injections (MDI) — in managing glycemic levels and influencing pregnancy outcomes in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) patients. Methods: In total, 118 GDM patients admitted between January 2021 and May 2023 were randomly allocated into two groups using a computer-generated sequence. Patients in the MDI group received multiple daily injections, while those in the CSII group received continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion via an insulin pump. The study duration lasted from diagnosis until delivery. Glycemic control was measured by monitoring fasting blood glucose (FBG), postprandial blood glucose (PBG), and bedtime blood glucose (BBG) levels. Pregnancy outcomes included the incidence of hypoglycemia, premature rupture of membranes, postpartum hemorrhage, fetal distress, macrosomia, neonatal asphyxia, and preterm delivery. Results: Post-treatment, the CSII group showed better control of FBG, PBG, and BBG, which were significantly lower compared to the MDI group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the incidence rates of complications such as hypoglycemia, fetal distress, neonatal asphyxia were significantly lower in the CSII group compared to the MDI group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: CSII offers better treatment outcomes for GDM patients compared to MDI. It effectively regulates blood glucose levels, optimizes pregnancy outcomes, and minimizes the risk of neonatal complications. Hence, CSII deserves further clinical endorsement and application. Reservoirs, heavily influenced by artificial management, often harbor phytoplankton assemblages dominated by cyanobacteria or dinoflagellates, triggering significant changes in aquatic ecosystems. However, due to limited sampling frequency and insufficient attention to species composition, the bloom processes and key characteristics of phytoplankton community structure have not been systematically elucidated. During the low-water level period when blooms are most likely to occur (June to September) in a tributary bay of the Three Gorges Reservoir, daily sampling was conducted to investigate phytoplankton community composition, identify significant environmental factors, and evaluate important structure characteristics of phytoplankton community. The results showed that Microcystis aeruginosa maintained a clear dominance for almost a month in stage 1, with low Shannon and evenness but a high dominance index. Phytoplankton total density and biomass decreased drastically in stage 2, but Microcystis aeruginosa still accounted for some proportion. The highest Shannon and evenness but the lowest dominance index occurred in stage 3. Peridiniopsis niei occurred massively in stage 4, but its dominant advantages lasted only one to two days. NH4-N was responsible for the dominance of Microcystis aeruginosa, while TP and PO4-P was responsible for the dominance of Peridiniopsis niei; however, precipitation contributed to their drastic decrease or disappearance to some extent. The TN : TP ratio could be considered as an important indicator to determine whether Microcystis aeruginosa or Peridiniopsis niei dominated the phytoplankton community. Throughout the study period, physiochemical factors explained more variation in phytoplankton data than meteorological and hydrological factors. Pairwise comparisons revealed an increase in average β diversity with stage progression, with higher β diversities based on abundance data than those based on presence/absence data. Repl had a greater effect on β diversity differences based on presence/absence data, whereas RichDiff had a greater effect on β diversity differences based on species abundance data. Co-occurrence networks for stage 1 showed the most complex structure, followed by stage 4, while the network for stage 3 was relatively sparse, although the overall community division remained compact. This study provides a useful attempt to explore the status and changes in phytoplankton community structure during the bloom process through high-resolution investigation.

Conservation of wetlands on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau is vital to the ecological security of China and even all of Asia. In this study, we investigated the aquatic protected area system established by the Chinese government in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. In general, 9 categories of aquatic protected areas have been established in this area, linked to the International Union for Conservation of Nature classification system of protected areas. The diverse main protection objectives of different protected areas have played a key role in wetland conservation. However, the protection of wetland environments and aquatic organisms has been insufficient in some atypical protected areas and local protected areas. We further constructed a list of important aquatic organisms in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau and analyzed the protected status of those important species through gap analysis. A total of 156 important aquatic species were identified, with 8 gap species and 18 inadequately protected species. It is encouraging that none of the national key protected species are gap species, but there are 4 gap species that are threatened species on “China’s red list”. In addition, we found that 17 important species are designated as Data Deficient or Not Evaluated on “China’s red list”, including 8 national key protected species. Finally, we propose the prospects for solving the existing problems of aquatic protected area systems: integrating aquatic protected areas, enhancing the status of community-based conservation, and increasing investment in important aquatic organism research.

The vertical distribution of phytoplankton plays a crucial role in shaping the dynamics and structure of aquatic communities. In highly dynamic reservoir systems, water level fluctuations significantly affect the physiochemical conditions and the phytoplankton community. However, the specific effects on the vertical characteristics of phytoplankton between the mainstream and the tributary bay of the reservoir remain unstudied. This study investigated the vertical aspects of phytoplankton density, biomass, α and β diversity through monthly sampling over two years in the mainstream (Chang Jiang, CJ) and a tributary bay (Xiang Xi, XX) of the Three Gorges Reservoir in China. Phytoplankton density and biomass were significantly higher in XX, indicating an increased risk of algal blooms in the tributary. The phytoplankton community in CJ showed more stable species-environment relationships, a lower Shannon index and a higher evenness index, suggesting a relatively simple structure and a more uniform distribution of phytoplankton among different water layers. Conversely, XX showed greater differences between water layers (higher β diversity), with significant negative correlations with water level and positive correlations with DO difference, dissolved silica (DSi) difference, and stratification. Peak phytoplankton density and biomass, as well as high β diversity in XX, occurred during periods of decreased water levels with strong stratification in spring and summer. A structural equation model complemented by path analysis revealed that a decrease in water level could increase β diversity either directly through internal processes with extended residence time or indirectly by modifying stratification and the vertical distribution of DSi in XX. Therefore, a proposed water quality management strategy for XX was to increase the water level or reduce β diversity by implementing artificial mixing during stratification periods. Overall, this study lies in its comprehensive investigation of the vertical characteristics of the phytoplankton community in both the mainstream and the tributary bay of the Three Gorges Reservoir, elucidating the significant impact of water level fluctuations and providing insights for targeted water quality management strategies in the tributary bay to mitigate potential ecological impacts.

AbstractBackground High expression of immune checkpoints (ICs) and senescence molecules (SMs) contributes to T cell dysfunction, tumor escape, and progression, but systematic evaluation of them in co-expression patterns and prognosis in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) was lacking.Methods Three publicly available datasets (TCGA, Beat-AML, and GSE71014) were first used to explore the effect of IC and SM combinations on prognosis and the immune microenvironment in AML, and bone marrow samples from 68 AML patients from our clinical center (GZFPH) was further used to validate the findings.Results High expression of CD276, Bcl2-associated athanogene 3 (BAG3), and SRC was associated with poor overall survival (OS) of AML patients. CD276/BAG3/SRC combination, standard European Leukemia Net (ELN) risk stratification, age, and French-American-British (FAB) subtype were used to construct a nomogram model. Interestingly, the new risk stratification derived from the nomogram was better than the standard ELN risk stratification in predicting the prognosis for AML. A weighted combination of CD276 and BAG3/SRC positively corrected with TP53 mutation, p53 pathway, CD8+ T cells, activated memory CD4+ T cells, T-cell senescence score, and Tumor Immune Dysfunction and Exclusion (TIDE) score estimated by T-cell dysfunction.Conclusion High expression of ICs and SMs was associated with poor OS of AML patients. Ribosomes are abundant, large RNA-protein complexes that are the sites of all protein synthesis in cells. Defects in ribosomal proteins (RPs), including proteoforms arising from genetic variations, alternative splicing of RNA transcripts, post-translational modifications and alterations of protein expression level, have been linked to a diverse range of diseases, including cancer and aging. Comprehensive characterization of ribosomal proteoforms is challenging but important for the discovery of potential disease biomarkers or protein targets. In the present work, using E. coli 70S RPs as an example, we first developed a top-down proteomics approach on a Waters Synapt G2 Si mass spectrometry (MS) system, and then applied it to the HeLa 80S ribosome. The results were complemented by a bottom-up approach. In total, 50 out of 55 RPs were identified using the top-down approach. Among these, more than 30 RPs were found to have their N-terminal methionine removed. Additional modifications such as methylation, acetylation, and hydroxylation were also observed, and the modification sites were identified by bottom-up MS. In a HeLa 80S ribosomal sample, we identified 98 ribosomal proteoforms, among which multiple truncated 80S ribosomal proteoforms were observed, the type of information which is often overlooked by bottom-up experiments. Although their relevance to diseases is not yet known, the integration of top-down and bottom-up proteomics approaches paves the way for the discovery of proteoform-specific disease biomarkers or targets.

The rapid and continuous loss of biodiversity highlights the urgent need for research on functional diversity. Although the study of functional diversity has exploded in the past two decades, there is no clear guidance on how traits should be selected for index calculation, which significantly influences functional diversity results. To fill this gap, we explored how the functional diversity of freshwater macroinvertebrates has been estimated over the past 20 years and how it differs across continents and water bodies. We found that Europe is the absolute centre of research in this area and that most of the research comes from studies of European lotic waters. By fitting cumulative frequencies to the number of articles using different numbers of traits, our results showed that approximately 80% of the studies used no more than 12 traits to estimate functional diversity. Furthermore, by exploring the use frequency of numbers and types of traits in different regions and water bodies and combining them with trait grouping, we recommend the use of traits evenly from four trait groups to calculate functional diversity indices. This selection strategy can contribute to the unification of functional diversity estimations and comparative studies of different regions, thus helping to better understand and manage biodiversity loss worldwide.

Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF) relationships are important research issues in the context of biodiversity loss. However, most studies only explored BEF relationships using species richness as a proxy for biodiversity without considering the effects of species evenness and importance of functional diversity on ecosystem functioning. In the present study, we explored multiple relationships among in-stream environmental variables, species diversity (species richness and species evenness), functional diversity (functional richness, functional evenness and Rao’s quadratic entropy index) and biomass of benthic diatom communities from a Chinese mountainous river network. We tested two hypotheses: (1) species richness and evenness affect community biomass independently, and (2) species diversity directly affects community biomass and also indirectly affects community biomass by influencing functional diversity. We found that benthic diatom diversity and biomass were influenced by wetted width, conductivity, and pH. Species richness and evenness had positive and negative effects on community biomass, respectively; while, the effect of richness (with a pathway coefficient of 0.39) was stronger than that of evenness (−0.28). However, we have not found an interaction pathway between species richness and species evenness in structural equation models, indicating that the two effects on community biomass were independent of each other. Both functional richness and Rao’s quadratic entropy index had positive effects on community biomass, although effects of other variables blurred the relationship between functional richness and community biomass in structural equation modeling. Besides direct effects, species diversity also indirectly affected community biomass through influencing Rao’s quadratic entropy index, with direct effects (0.27) were more than twice stronger than indirect effects (0.12). Our findings imply that the selection effect played a dominant role in the relationship between diatom diversity and biomass, indicated by the negative species evenness and biomass relationship; meanwhile, the complementarity effect was also important. The inclusion of more diversity indices to explore the biodiversity-biomass relationship would help to provide a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of this relationship and its driving mechanisms. We suggest carrying out more studies on BEF relationships in streams and rivers to support protection practices for sustaining biodiversity and their ecosystem functions in natural lotic ecosystems.

In this study, we evaluated the ecological water quality of the entire Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) and further examined the relationship with changes in watershed land covers. Using the phytoplankton functional group-based Q index, we found that the ecological water quality in the mainstream (previously known as the Yangtze River) of TGR is good, with 84% of sites in the status above good. While the poor ecological water quality was generally observed in the backwater regions of TGR’s tributaries, with 79% of sites below the good status. Further investigating the potential impacts of the changes in land covers within the watershed on the tributary ecological water quality, we found that the percentage of urban and farmland areas had a significant (p < 0.05) negative correlation with the Q index-based ecological water quality of the tributary bays, and the forest cover had a marginally significant (p = 0.058) positive correlation with the ecological water quality. As a comparison, total nitrogen and total phosphorus in the tributary backwater regions of TGR had no reasonable correlation with the land covers within the watershed. Our study highlights that watershed management can enhance the ecological water quality in the backwater regions of TGR’s tributaries, but it likely to be a long-term process. This implies considerations of other rapid measures, such as the water level regulation approach, should also be considered in reservoir management. Our study underscores the importance of ecological water quality assessment in reservoir management and provides insights into the impacts of changes in watershed land covers on ecological water quality in backwater regions of TGR’s tributaries.

The effect of biodiversity on ecosystem productivity has been a controversial issue in ecological research. The species richness–productivity relationship is highly variable in natural ecosystems, with a positive relationship being one of the most commonly observed relationships. Previous regional studies from terrestrial ecosystems have demonstrated that environmental gradients can regulate the species richness–productivity relationship. However, how this relationship varies in freshwater ecosystems across spatial environment gradients remains unclear. In this study, we propose that the species richness–productivity relationship can be modulated by the water depth. Here, we surveyed the submerged macrophyte community structure by establishing 24 transects and 642 quadrats in Erhai Lake, Yunnan Plateau, China. Our findings highlight that the species richness–productivity relationship gradually changed from slightly positive to strongly positive as the environment became more light-limited with the increasing water depth, supporting the stress-gradient hypothesis. The results from this study provide new insights into the biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships and in managing lake macrophyte communities and productivity.

Stream ecosystems in high-mountain regions are susceptible to rapid environmental change, including warming and increased human activities. Understanding elevational patterns of stream communities and underlying drivers can facilitate the development of efficient conservation and management strategies to mitigate the impacts of these changes. Our study investigated elevational patterns of macroinvertebrate trait composition and functional diversity in six streams in the Hengduan Mountains region, Southwest China, which was recognized as one of the global biodiversity hotspots. We were particularly interested in untangling the effects of watershed human disturbance and instream physicochemical factors on elevational patterns of stream macroinvertebrates. Our results showed clear elevational patterns in both trait composition and functional diversity of macroinvertebrate communities. For trait composition, the results indicated that macroinvertebrate traits associated with mobility, habit, and feeding mode exhibited clear elevational patterns. For functional diversity, functional richness showed a positive correlation with elevation, whereas functional divergence had the opposite trend. No significant elevational pattern was detected in functional evenness and RaoQ. Further analyses found that weak human disturbance was the most important driver shaping trait composition and functional diversity of macroinvertebrates. Meanwhile, instream water temperature, primary productivity, and flow velocity also played considerable roles. Our study emphasizes the influence of watershed human disturbance on elevational patterns of macroinvertebrates in high-mountain streams. It also highlights the potential of trait composition and function diversity of macroinvertebrates as indicators for monitoring the ecological status of high-mountain streams.

The biodiversity-stability relationship is a fundamental subject of ecological research. Considerable evidence demonstrates that biodiversity can either increase or decrease stability. Most relevant research mainly focuses on grassland and forest ecosystems. The biodiversity-stability relationship in aquatic ecosystems and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. To fill the gap, we conducted a year-long study on the phytoplankton of reservoir ecosystems in the Xiangxi Bay of Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) to test the following hypotheses: (H1) phytoplankton species richness and functional diversity directly reduce phytoplankton community stability in reservoir ecosystems; (H2) nutrient enrichment and water temperature increasing directly reduce phytoplankton community stability; and (H3) nutrients and water temperature indirectly reduce phytoplankton community stability via biodiversity. The structural equation model (SEM) found that functional diversity (community-weighted means of traits and functional divergence) had significant negative correlations with phytoplankton community stability (p < 0.05), while the species diversity had no significant correlation with phytoplankton community stability (p > 0.05). This finding partially supported the hypothesis H1, which suggested that the functional diversity had a closer tie with stability than the species diversity. SEM did not find any direct effect of environmental factors on phytoplankton community stability, which rejected our hypothesis H2. Instead, SEM found that water temperature and phosphate decreased phytoplankton community stability by increasing the first principal component of the community-weighted means of traits (CWM_PC1), which supported hypothesis H3. Further analysis showed that the increased water temperature and phosphate concentration can promote “r-strategists” species (larger CWM_PC1), which are less resistant to environmental disturbances, therefore decreasing the phytoplankton community stability. Our study highlights the importance of functional diversity in maintaining the relationship between biodiversity and stability in the phytoplankton community, which may provide a mechanistic understanding of the biodiversity-stability relationships in aquatic ecosystems.

The social and environmental impacts of large dams are quantifiable and have been well documented, while small dams have often been presumed to be less environmentally damaging than large dams. The purpose of this study was to analyze longitudinal gradients in environmental, hydrodynamic variables and their impact on phytoplankton function, within a cascade of four reservoirs (XuanMiaoGuan, XMG; TianFuMiao, TFM; XiBeiKou, XBK; ShangJiaHe, SJH) and one reservoir bay (Huangbohe Bay, HBH), located from upstream to downstream in the Huangbo River, Hubei Province, China. Our results showed that water temperature, total nitrogen, and soluble silicate increased along the cascade reservoir system, while the concentration of dissolved oxygen and total phosphorus decreased. We identified 16 phytoplankton functional groups, and the predominant groups, including D (Synedra and Stephanodiscus hantzschii), E (Dinobryon divergens), Lo (Dinoflagellate: Peridinium bipes and Peridiniopsis), X2 (Chroomona), and Y (Cryptomonas), changed longitudinally from up to down in the cascade reservoirs. The number of dominant functional groups increased along the longitudinal gradient, indicating that the function of the phytoplankton community was more stable. Functional group D was the dominant phytoplankton functional group among the four reservoirs, and Lo group was dominant except SJH. The phytoplankton functional groups in the HBH have been completely changed due to the backwater jacking of the main stream of the Yangtze River. Euphotic depth, suspended solids, and nutrients were apparently the key factors driving variations in phytoplankton functional groups among the reservoirs. Notably, the patterns we observed were not all consistent with the cascading reservoir continuum concept (CRCC) that typically characterizes large rivers. Thus, our findings contribute to the further theoretical development of the CRCC, which may not apply widely to all cascade systems.

The traits of organisms provide critical information for understanding changes in biodiversity and ecosystem function at large scales. In recent years, trait databases of macroinvertebrates have been developed across continents. Anyone using different databases to search for traits will encounter a series of problems that lead to uncertain results due to the inconsistency of the trait information. For example, traits for a particular macroinvertebrate taxon may be inconsistent across databases, coded in inconsistent ways, or cannot be found. However, most of the current studies do not clearly state their solutions, which seriously hinders the accuracy and comparability of global trait studies. To solve these problems, we collected representative databases from several continents, including the United States, Europe, South Africa, Bolivia, Australia, and New Zealand. By comparing the inconsistency of similar trait classifications in the nine databases, we harmonized 41 of these grouping features. We found that these databases differed widely in terms of the range and category of traits. And the method of coding traits also varies from database to database. Moreover, we showed a set of trait searching rules that integrate trait databases from different regions of the world, allowing traits to be identified more easily and uniformly using different trait databases worldwide. We also applied this method to determine the traits of 155 macroinvertebrate taxa in the Three Parallel Rivers Region (TPRR). The results showed that among a total of 155 macroinvertebrate taxa, the 41 grouping features of all genera were not fully identified, and 32 genera were not recorded (thus using family-level data). No trait information was found at all for two families, which contain two genera. This suggests that many macroinvertebrate taxa and their traits have not been fully studied, especially in those regions, including China, where macroinvertebrate trait studies are lagging. This inadequacy and unevenness have seriously hindered the study and development of macroinvertebrate trait and functional diversity worldwide. Our results complement the information on stream macroinvertebrate traits in the TPRR, a global biodiversity hotspot, and greatly promote the uniformity of global trait research and the accuracy and comparability of trait research in different regions.

Being increasingly constructed worldwide, dams are a main driver of flow regime change and biodiversity decline. Although small run-of-river dams have exceeded the number of large dams, their impacts on taxonomic and functional β-diversity as well as community assembly process of aquatic organisms have been largely neglected. Ninety sites within twenty three small run-of-river dams in the Xiangxi River were selected, and the hydrological and physicochemical variables for each site were measured. We analyzed the traits and β-diversity of benthic diatoms, and explored the key driving mechanism of benthic diatom community assembly. Our results indicated that the construction of small run-of-river dams could affect the β-diversity of benthic diatoms and the mechanism of community assembly. Specifically, we found that small run-of-river dams could change the relative contribution of nestedness components to the trait-based β-diversity of benthic diatoms, but generally the taxonomy-based β-diversity was relatively higher than the trait-based β-diversity. Furthermore, the community assembly process of benthic diatoms was also affected. In areas affected directly by small run-of-river dams, dispersal assembly was the key mechanism for community assembly. Compared to unregulated habitats, the dispersal assembly process between the impacted and the unregulated habitats has been enhanced. We advocate that this study can be expanded to other organisms (such as macroinvertebrates, phytoplankton, fish) in future to fully understand impacts of small run-of-river dams on biodiversity from a multi-trophic level aspect. Based on our results, we suggest that maintaining genetic and ecological connectivity based on an effective impact assessment in dry seasons is a potential solution to mitigate the impacts of such dams, as key to adaptive management and sustainability.

Body size is sensitive to environmental changes and one of the fundamental traits linking ecological functions. Size structure has been suggested as a useful indicator for environmental monitoring and assessment in aquatic ecosystems. However, the organisms’ size structure and the relationship with environmental factors remain seldom addressed in reservoir ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the size spectrum, size diversity of the zooplankton and their relationships with environmental conditions across nitrogen and phosphorus gradients in the Xiangxi Bay of Three Gorges Reservoir, China. We further tested the hypotheses that how nutrient and water temperature affect zooplankton size structure: nutrients indirectly affect zooplankton size spectrum and size diversity via phytoplankton (H1); increasing water temperature will reduce size diversity and result in a steeper size spectrum (H2); size diversity is a more robust metric indicating environment changes than the size spectrum in high dynamic ecosystems (H3). We found that both the size spectrum and size diversity showed high spatiotemporal dynamics. The size spectrum ranged from −3.373 to −0.984. The size diversity ranged from 0.631 to 3.291. Spatially, the lowest values of the size spectrum and size diversity were observed in the upstream areas of Xiangxi Bay, where nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations are high and low, respectively. And in temporal dynamics, lower values of the size spectrum and size diversity were generally observed in March and April. Further analyses based on the structural equation model (SEM) found a clear pathway revealing that nutrient variables affect the zooplankton abundance and size structure, supporting hypothesis H1. That is, dissolved inorganic nitrogen had an indirect effect on the zooplankton abundance, size spectrum, and size diversity by influencing the concentration of phytoplankton chlorophyll a. In addition, results of SEM suggested that increased water temperature had a significant negative effect on the size diversity but had non-significant effects on zooplankton abundance and size spectrum. This finding suggests that size diversity is a reliable and useful index in measuring the zooplankton size structure in reservoir ecosystems with high dynamics, which may have a wide application in environmental monitoring and assessment, especially for complex and dynamic aquatic ecosystems.

Small waterbodies are a unique aquatic ecosystem with an increasing recognition for their important role in maintaining regional biodiversity and delivering ecosystem services. However, small waterbodies in Northwest Yunnan, one of the most concerned global biodiversity hot-spots, remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated the community structure of crustacean zooplankton and their relationships with limnological, morphometric and spatial variables in the highland small waterbodies in Northwest Yunnan in both the dry (October 2015) and rainy (June 2016) seasons. A total of 38 species of crustacean zooplankton were identified in our study, which is significantly higher than many other reported waterbodies in the Yunnan–Guizhou plateau as well as in the Yangtze River basin. This suggests that the highland small waterbodies are critical in maintaining regional zooplankton diversity in Northwest Yunnan. Meanwhile, we found limnological variables could explain most variation of crustacean zooplankton community, comparing to the morphometric and spatial variables in both the rainy and dry seasons. Our study revealed the diversity and community structure of crustacean zooplankton in the highland small waterbodies in Northwest Yunnan and highlighted the importance of small waterbodies in maintaining regional biodiversity.

A suitable environmental flow is critical for the functional maintenance of riverine ecosystems. Hydropower plants alter the flow regime by decreasing or even drying up the streamflow downstream of the dams, thereby affecting ecosystem sustainability. In this study, we aimed to develop a robust environmental flow framework that can provide scientific evidence for sustainable water resource management. Using ecological niche modeling based on non-linear responses of species to habitat factors, we assessed the environmental flow in the Xiangxi River Basin of Central China during dry and wet seasons from a multi-year perspective. The most abundant macroinvertebrate taxon (i.e., Baetis) was selected for model testing. The results showed seasonal differences in the minimum ecological water requirements and optimal environmental flow. These two hydrological metrics were higher during the wet season than during the dry season. During the dry season, the minimum ecological water requirement of Baetis was 1.3 m3·s−1, and the optimal environmental flow was 1.6 m3·s−1. During the wet season, the minimum ecological water requirement of Baetis was 2.5 m3·s−1, and the optimal environmental flow was 2.6 m3·s−1. This study provides a theoretical basis for the robust management of water resources in river basins.

Water level plays a crucial role in the function and social services of lakes. Studies on historical changes in water level and its eco-social function can give insights into future water conservation and management. In this study, interannual and seasonal changes in the water level of Erhai Lake were analyzed from 1952 to 2019 to explore water level responses to human activities and climate change. The time series was divided into three distinct periods, i.e., 1952–1971, 1972–2003, and 2004–2019. Results showed that the water level and fluctuation amplitude differed among the different time periods, i.e., 1965.8 and 1.3 m (1952–1971), 1964.4 and 1.9 m (1972–2003), and 1965.2 and 1.2 m (1972–2003), respectively. The construction and operation of a hydroelectric power plant along the outlet river significantly decreased the water level and increased fluctuation amplitude in the 1972–2003 period. Since 2004, due to the implementation of local government water level management laws for Erhai Lake, the water level has remained relatively high, with moderate fluctuation amplitude. In addition, compared to the increase in water level amplitude in response to increased wet season (May–October) precipitation in the 1952–1971 period, response sensitivity increased in the 1972–2003 period, but became non-significant in the 2004–2019 period. In regard to the multi-timescale relationship between water level and precipitation, precipitation decreased by 89 mm in the 2004–2019 period compared with that from 1952 to 1971, and artificial water-level regulation resulted in a time-lag of 2, 3–3.5, and 4 months between water level and precipitation during the 1952–1971, 1972–2003, and 2004–2019 periods, respectively. The eco-social aspects of changes in water level are discussed below, and water level regulation from an ecological perspective is recommended to gain economic returns in the future.

The metacommunity concept has received increasing interest in the past two decades. However, there has been limited research examining metacommunity structure of communities in high mountain streams. These ecosystems are often physically constrained and can display large environmental gradients within a relatively small spatial extent. Here, we examined metacommunity structures of stream organisms in a high mountain region, which is part of the Hengduan Mountains region in Southwest China. Macroinvertebrates and diatoms were collected from six streams in two opposite aspects of the same mountain with different connectivity between streams. On the west aspect, streams are tributaries of a river (i.e., river-connected) while streams flow into a lake (i.e., lake-connected) on the east aspect. We used Elements of Metacommunity Structure analysis to explore the metacommunity structuring of these two biological models. We also compared the contribution of dispersal and environmental filtering in structuring metacommunities by looking at Euclidean, network, topographic, and environmental distances. Communities of diatoms and macroinvertebrates were structured with clear turnover on both aspects. Further, diatom communities exhibited Clementsian structure on both aspects. Macroinvertebrates exhibited different metacommunity structures on the river-connected aspect (Quasi-Clementsian) and lake-connected aspect (Clementsian). Our results indicated that on the lake-connected aspect, environmental filtering had a stronger association with community dissimilarity than on the river-connected aspect for both macroinvertebrate and diatom communities. Diatom communities were more influenced by environmental filtering on the east aspect with weakened network connectivity compared with those on the west aspect. Our results also emphasized the potential effects of biotic interactions between macroinvertebrates and diatoms on shaping community structures of one other. Our study provides substantial elements to further understand metacommunity structure and highlights the necessity of future research to reveal the underlying mechanisms of community structuring in these remote ecosystems.

Spatial biodiversity is a key issue in biogeography for the explorations of biological origin and diversification. However, seldom studies have addressed the temporal changes in spatial patterns of biodiversity. We explored the taxonomic and functional diversities of riverine macroinvertebrates in central China, with the elevational gradient, in different seasons in a normal climate year (i.e., no extreme anomalies in the annual precipitation or average annual temperature). The air temperature and streamflow discharge were decreased monotonically with the increase of elevation both in the dry and wet seasons. In addition, the total nitrogen had no significant change with the increase of elevational gradient in the dry season but showed a monotonically decreasing pattern in the wet season. The total phosphorus showed a monotonically decreasing pattern with the elevational gradient in the dry season but had no significant change in the wet season. The spatial pattern of taxonomic diversity of macroinvertebrates along the elevational gradient showed complex patterns, but the functional diversity had either the unimodal or monotonically decreasing pattern. In addition, the functional diversity with the elevational gradient had similar patterns between the dry and wet seasons. Further analysis of the elevational pattern in different seasons is an important basis for understanding the status quo of functional diversity and formulating countermeasures for biodiversity conservation.

Abstract Although human disturbance indirectly influences lotic assemblages through modifying physical and chemical conditions, identifying thresholds of human disturbance would provide direct evidence for preventing anthropogenic degradation of biological conditions. In the present study, we used data obtained from tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir in China to detect effects of human disturbance on streams and to identify disturbance thresholds for benthic diatoms. Diatom species composition was significantly affected by three in-stream stressors including TP, TN and pH. Diatoms were also influenced by watershed % farmland and natural environmental variables. Considering three in-stream stressors, TP was positively influenced by % farmland and % impervious surface area (ISA). In contrast, TN and pH were principally affected by natural environmental variables. Among measured natural environmental variables, average annual air temperature, average annual precipitation, and topsoil % CaCO3, % gravel, and total exchangeable bases had significant effects on study streams. When effects of natural variables were accounted for, substantial compositional changes in diatoms occurred when farmland or ISA land use exceeded 25% or 0.3%, respectively. Our study demonstrated the rationale for identifying thresholds of human disturbance for lotic assemblages and addressed the importance of accounting for effects of natural factors for accurate disturbance thresholds.

Little work has been done on large-scale patterns of stream insect richness in China. We explored the influence of climatic and catchment-scale factors on stream insect (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera; EPT) richness across mid-latitude China. We assessed the predictive ability of climatic, catchment land cover and physical structure variables on genus richness of EPT, both individually and combined, in 80 mid-latitude Chinese streams, spanning a 3899-m altitudinal gradient. We performed analyses using boosted regression trees and explored the nature of their influence on richness patterns. The relative importance of climate, land cover, and physical factors on stream insect richness varied considerably between the three orders, and while important for Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera, latitude did not improve model fit for any of the groups. EPT richness was linked with areas comprising high forest cover, elevation and slope, large catchments and low temperatures. Ephemeroptera favoured areas with high forest cover, medium-to-large catchment sizes, high temperature seasonality, and low potential evapotranspiration. Plecoptera richness was linked with low temperature seasonality and annual mean, and high slope, elevation and warm-season rainfall. Finally, Trichoptera favoured high elevation areas, with high forest cover, and low mean annual temperature, seasonality and aridity. Our findings highlight the variable role that catchment land cover, physical properties and climatic influences have on stream insect richness. This is one of the first studies of its kind in Chinese streams, thus we set the scene for more in-depth assessments of stream insect richness across broader spatial scales in China, but stress the importance of improving data availability and consistency through time.
