High catalytic performances of metal-semiconductor heterostructures have gained significant attention in recent years. However, developing fast and low-cost synthesis of multiphase heterojunction catalysts has long been a challenge. Herein, three phases of Cu-CeO2-SrTiO3-δ heterojunction catalyst are successfully synthesized by combining with sol-gel and rapid plasma exsolution method. Using dielectric barrier discharge plasma (DBD), Cu nanoparticles are exsolved and uniformly distributed on the surface of CeO2-SrTiO3-δ. This unique multiphase heterojunction catalyst exhibits superior performance in photothermal reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reactions. The yield of CO from this catalyst is impressive at 11.32 mmol g−1 h−1, 9 times greater than pure SrTiO3, and the selectivity for CO is high (99.95%). The enhanced activity is primarily attributed to the synergistic effect resulting from the incorporation of three phases of Cu nanoparticles, CeO2, and SrTiO3-δ, as well as their interfaces. The increase in oxygen vacancy sites in CeO2 enhances the adsorption of CO2, whereas the doping and exsolution of Cu help to broaden the light absorption range. A significant role is played by the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Cu nanoparticles in promoting the catalytic performance of RWGS. This study demonstrates a simple and efficient method for fabricating multiphase heterojunction catalysts, providing new strategies for photothermal CO2 reduction.

Serine proteases (SPs) play physiological roles in the kidney. We previously reported that a synthetic SP inhibitor, camostat mesilate (CM), suppressed sodium reabsorption in the renal tubule and showed natriuretic effects in aldosterone-infused rats. Here, we aimed to explore novel physiological roles of SPs in the renal tubule and understand the mechanism of actions of SP inhibitors, by administering CM to healthy rats. Sprague–Dawley rats were classified into control and CM (subcutaneous sustained-release pellet) groups and sacrificed on day 7. CM significantly increased urine volumes by approximately two-fold in a urinary sodium- and osmolyte excretion-independent manner, indicating the occurrence of free water excretion. Serum vasopressin, potassium, and calcium levels and the osmolality in the renal medulla, which all affect free water reabsorption in the renal tubule, remained unchanged after CM administration. CM decreased urinary exosomal AQP2 excretion, suggesting suppression of AQP2 activity in the collecting duct. These changes were reversed by desmopressin infusion. Water diuresis caused by CM was independent of its action on prostasin or TMPRSS4. Our results revealed the association of SP inhibition with free water handling and demonstrated that CM administration exerted diuretic effects with AQP2 downregulation, suggesting SP inhibitors as a new class of aquaretic drugs.

In the fringe projection profilometry (FPP), the traditional phase-shifting (TPS) algorithm and the Fourier transform (FT) algorithm are beset with a conundrum where measurement efficiency and conflicts with measurement accuracy, thereby limiting their application in dynamic three-dimensional (3D) measurements. Here, we propose a phase shift generation (PSG) method, which acquires the sinusoidal fringes by sparse sampling and reconstructs the complete phase-shifting sequence by generating the missing fringes with superimposed coupling of adjacent fringes. According to our proposed PSG method in which the sinusoidal fringe sequence size is about half of the TPS method, meaning that the PSG method will be timesaving in the phase-shifting sequence sampling process. Moreover, because of the utilization of multiframe fringes, our PSG method allows for a more accurate measurement than the FT method. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrate that our proposed PSG method can well balance the measurement accuracy and efficiency with a lower sampling rate, bearing a great potential to be applied in both scientific and industrial areas.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with chronic kidney disease and proteinuria. Previously, we reported that a synthetic serine protease inhibitor, camostat mesilate (CM), mitigated hypertension and proteinuria in rodent disease models. The present study evaluated the anti-hypertensive and anti-proteinuric effects of CM in MetS model rats (SHR/ND mcr-cp). Rats were divided into normal salt-fed (NS), high salt-fed (HS), HS and CM-treated (CM), and HS and hydralazine-treated (Hyd) groups. Rats were sacrificed after four weeks of treatment. Severe hypertension and proteinuria were observed in the HS group. Although CM and Hyd equally alleviated hypertension, CM suppressed proteinuria and glomerular sclerosis more efficiently than Hyd. The HS group revealed a decrease in podocyte number and podocyte-specific molecules, together with an increase in glomerular apoptotic cells and apoptosis-related proteins in the kidney. These changes were significantly attenuated by CM, but not by Hyd. Furthermore, CM ameliorated the apoptotic signals in murine cultured podocytes stimulated with the high glucose and aldosterone medium. In conclusion, CM could exert renoprotective effects in MetS model rats, together with the inhibition of podocyte apoptosis. Our study suggests that serine protease inhibition may become a new therapeutic strategy against MetS-related hypertension and renal injuries.

In this work, we demonstrated a novel and low-cost full-range optical coherence tomography (FROCT) method. In comparison with the off-pivot approach, which needs precise control of the deflecting distance and should be adjusted for different situations, our proposed method is more flexible without regulating the system itself. Different from the previous systems reported in the literature, which used a high-cost piezo-driven stage to introduce the phase modulation, our system utilizes a cost-effective voice coil motor for retrieving the complex-valued spectral signal. The complex-valued data, with a twofold increase in the accessible depth range, can be calculated using an algorithm based on the Hilbert transform and Dirac delta function. To confirm the effectivity of our method, both simulation and experiments were performed. In particular, for the in vivo experiment, we presented the FROCT result of a fingernail fold, demonstrating the availability of in vivo imaging. Since the key element of our system is a low-cost voice coil motor, which is flexible and more accessible for most of the clinics, we believe that it has great potential to be a clinical modality in the future.

The bitelecentric lens system is widely used in many domains, such as 3-D measurements and tube inspection. The magnification calibration for such a system is a crucial problem for its further application in achieving precise measurements. However, it is difficult to obtain an accurate result using a general magnification calibration method. In this paper, the Moiré-based interferometry is demonstrated to accurately calibrate the magnification of bitelecentric lens system that increases the speed and precision of the measurement. Two special grating marks containing upper and lower parts with slightly different periods are designed to generate Moiré fringes. By analyzing the finally obtained Moiré fringes, the magnification could be determined through Fourier-based phase analysis and a phase unwrapping algorithm, and the further the deviation is from the theoretical value, the more obvious the differences between upper and lower periods will be. Both simulations and experiments are conducted to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach. Results indicate that the magnification could be calibrated at the accuracy of 0.4% with extraordinary sensitivity.

A maskless lithography method to realize the rapid and cost-effective fabrication of micro-optics elements with arbitrary surface profiles is reported. A digital micro-mirror device (DMD) is applied to flexibly modulate that the exposure dose according to the surface profile of the structure to be fabricated. Due to the fact that not only the relationship between the grayscale levels of the DMD and the exposure dose on the surface of the photoresist, but also the dependence of the exposure depth on the exposure dose, deviate from a linear relationship arising from the DMD and photoresist, respectively, and cannot be systemically eliminated, complicated fabrication art and large fabrication error will results. A method of compensating the two nonlinear effects is proposed that can be used to accurately design the digital grayscale mask and ensure a precise control of the surface profile of the structure to be fabricated. To testify to the reliability of this approach, several typical array elements with a spherical surface, aspherical surface, and conic surface have been fabricated and tested. The root-mean-square (RMS) between the test and design value of the surface height is about 0.1 μm. The proposed method of compensating the nonlinear effect in maskless lithography can be directly used to control the grayscale levels of the DMD for fabricating the structure with an arbitrary surface profile.

A route of spatial modulation-assisted scanning white-light interferometry with the inhibition of background noises and light source fluctuations for the topography measurement of micro-/nano-structure surface was explored in this letter. The spatial modulation frequency was introduced by tilting the sample at a small angle to separate the noise signals and interference signals in the spatial frequency domain. A band pass filter and a normalization processing were also applied with the purpose of signal-to-noise-ratio improvement and contrast enhancement. The frequency domain analysis was then enrolled in the elimination of 2π ambiguity for the surface recovery with high-presicion. Both the theoretical analysis and the experiment results reveal the validity of spatial modulation-assisted scanning white-light interferometry and its potentials in high-fidelity measurement of smooth surfaces regardless of external disturbances. We report a method of boosting the imaging contrast of microsphere-assisted super-resolution visualization by utilizing dark-field illumination (DFI). We conducted experiments on both 10-µm-diameter silica (SiO2) microspheres with refractive index n ∼ 1.46 under no and partial immersion in ethyl alcohol (n ∼ 1.36) and 20-µm-diameter barium titanate glass (BTG, n ∼ 1.9) microspheres with full immersion to show the super-resolution capability. We experimentally demonstrated that the imaging contrast and uniformity were extraordinarily improved in the DFI mode. The intensity profiles in the visualization also numerically confirm the enhanced sharpness for a better imaging quality when applying DFI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
