Dust in the home environment is thought to be a potential trigger for increasing allergic diseases, such as allergic rash, rhinitis, asthma, and other conditions, associated with dust mites. To verify the status of dust mite prevalence in indoor surroundings, we collected 189 dust samples from the air conditioner filters (n = 75) and floors (n = 114) of households, schools, and hotels in the Anhui area, China. All samples were measured for dust mite breeding rate and breeding density under light microscopy and analyzed for dust mite species Dermatophagoides farinae 1 (Der f 1) and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus 1 (Der p 1) allergen using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The dust mite breeding rates were 34.67% (26/75) and 20.18% (23/114), respectively, in the dust samples from the floor and air conditioning filters. The breeding density was the highest in households (10/g), followed by schools (9/g) and hotels (4/g). ELISA indicated that the allergen threshold (2.0 µg/g dust) of Der f 1 was exceeded in only two samples and Der p 1 in one sample. Additionally, a questionnaire was used to investigate the health knowledge on allergic diseases involved in indoor facilities, finding that most allergy sufferers were aware that indoor dust might be responsible for their conditions. The findings suggest that regular maintenance of indoor hygiene and cleaning of air-conditioning filters should reduce the risks of exposure to indoor allergens.

Many biological hydrogels are mechanically robust to bear quasi-static and impact loads. In contrast, the mechanical properties of synthetic hydrogels against impact loads remain substantially unexplored, albeit their mechanical robustness under quasi-static loads has been extensively developed. Here, we report on the design and synthesis of strong, tough, and impact-resistant hydrogel composites by reinforcing Ca-alginate/polyacrylamide hydrogels with glass fabrics and conferring strong interfaces between the hydrogel matrix and the fibers. The fabric enables high elastic modulus, the hydrogel matrix enables large dissipation, and the strong interfaces enable efficient load transfer for synergistic strengthening and toughening, which is manifested by digital image correlation analyses. Under quasi-static loads, the hydrogel composite exhibits an elastic modulus of 35 MPa and a toughness of 206.7 kJ/m

Porphyry Mo deposits are important suppliers of molybdenum for industrial applications, but the origin and source of metals in these deposits remain debated. Here, we present Mo isotope data for Miocene mineralized porphyritic monzogranites (MPMs) and Paleocene barren biotite monzogranites and tuffs (BMTs) from the Bangpu porphyry Mo (Cu) deposit in the Gangdese metallogenic belt. The results show that the MPMs display radiogenic Sr and Pb isotopes and elevated δ98/95Mo (relative to NIST SRM 3134; +0.07‰–1.2‰) and Mo contents, which exceed the range of the depleted mantle. These characteristics cannot be attributed to surface weathering, hydrothermal alteration, magmatic differentiation, or partial melting but rather reflect the incorporation of Mo from black shales into their magma sources, as evidenced by the significant correlations between δ98/95Mo and εNd(t) and aluminum saturation index (ASI) values. In contrast, the BMTs display lower Mo and δ98/95Mo values than the mineralized samples, and their δ98/95Mo values display no correlations with radiogenic isotopes or ASI values. The contrasting characteristics of mineralized and barren samples provide strong evidence that the addition of black shales played an important role in the formation of the Bangpu porphyry Mo deposit. Our study thus establishes a possible link between porphyry Mo deposits and organic-rich sediments and highlights the great potential of Mo isotopes in studying porphyry Mo deposits.

Complex concentrated solutions of multiple principal elements are being widely investigated as high- or medium-entropy alloys (HEAs or MEAs)1–11, often assuming that these materials have the high configurational entropy of an ideal solution. However, enthalpic interactions among constituent elements are also expected at normal temperatures, resulting in various degrees of local chemical order12–22. Of the local chemical orders that can develop, chemical short-range order (CSRO) is arguably the most difficult to decipher and firm evidence of CSRO in these materials has been missing thus far16,22. Here we discover that, using an appropriate zone axis, micro/nanobeam diffraction, together with atomic-resolution imaging and chemical mapping via transmission electron microscopy, can explicitly reveal CSRO in a face-centred-cubic VCoNi concentrated solution. Our complementary suite of tools provides concrete information about the degree/extent of CSRO, atomic packing configuration and preferential occupancy of neighbouring lattice planes/sites by chemical species. Modelling of the CSRO order parameters and pair correlations over the nearest atomic shells indicates that the CSRO originates from the nearest-neighbour preference towards unlike (V−Co and V−Ni) pairs and avoidance of V−V pairs. Our findings offer a way of identifying CSRO in concentrated solution alloys. We also use atomic strain mapping to demonstrate the dislocation interactions enhanced by the CSROs, clarifying the effects of these CSROs on plasticity mechanisms and mechanical properties upon deformation. Direct experimental evidence of chemical short-range atomic-scale ordering (CSRO) in a VCoNi medium-entropy alloy is provided via diffraction and electron microscopy, analysed from specific crystallographic directions.

In recent years, considerable progress has been made on the study of Mo isotopes in high-temperature geological processes. However, it is still controversial whether Mo isotope fractionation occurs during magmatic differentiation. Here we reassess the effect of magma differentiation on Mo isotope fractionation using published data in conjunction with our new analysis of Mo isotopes in well-characterized I-type granitoids and their enclosed mafic magmatic enclaves (MMEs) from two plutons in the North Qilian Orogen. The MMEs in each pluton, representing earlier cumulates with greater modal proportions of amphibole and biotite, show similar Mo elemental and isotopic compositions to their host granitoids. The absence of covariation of Mo isotopes with Dy/Dy*, Fe2O3 and K/Rb in both plutons further indicates that fractional crystallization of amphibole, biotite and Fe3+-rich minerals does not fractionate Mo isotopes in these granitoids. On the basis of re-assessment of published and our newly obtained Mo isotope data, we find that there is no clear evidence for Mo isotope fractionation during fractional crystallization in igneous rock. Instead, Mo isotopes of our samples correlate positively with Sr isotopes and Rb/La ratios, and negatively with Nd isotopes and Ce/Pb ratios, indicating clearly that magma source compositional variation controls the variation of Mo isotope compositions of these granitoids.

Granitoids are the main constituents of the continental crust, and an understanding of their petrogenesis is key to the origin and evolution of continents. Whether crystal fractionation is the dominant way to generate evolved magmas has long been debated, mostly because such processes would produce large volumes of complementary cumulates, which remains elusive. Mafic magmatic enclaves (MMEs) are ubiquitous in granitoids and their presence was initially recognized as cumulates. However, because many MMEs lack obvious evidence of accumulation, such as the classic cumulate textures and modal layering, the cumulate origin of MMEs has been abandoned and the model of magma mixing between mafic and felsic magmas has become popular. In this study, we conduct a combined study of amphibole composition and in situ O isotopes in zircons on three suites of orogenic granitoids with MMEs from the North Qilian Orogenic Belt (NQOB). We find that the MMEs and their host granodiorites show overlapping zircon δ18O values, affirming that they share the same parental magmas. The amphibole compositions indicate that amphiboles from the MMEs are not in equilibrium with a melt whose composition was that of the bulk-rock. These new data, together with the published bulk-rock data, suggest that the MMEs in our study have clear cumulate signatures and are thus of cumulate origin. Our study provides evidence for crystal accumulation in granitoids in the NQOB. This new understanding calls for re-examination on the petrogenesis of some intermediate magmatic rocks (granitoid/andesite) in discussing models of continental crustal growth.

Lacking of forest hardening makes low ductility in steels long challenge particularly at high yield strength. Here, we report to make good use of hetero-structuring for superior strength-ductility synergy in high manganese steel. The point is to retain original deformed structure of large quantity, along with recrystallized ultrafine-grains and fine grains, jointly for most effective heterogeneous deformation-induced (HDI) hardening especially at high strength. The residual plastic strain of larger than 0.2% and large proportion of HDI stress over 60% indicate the crucial role in ductility by HDI hardening. This renders a significantly upgraded strength-ductility combination within high strength scope.

Whether the Earth’s mantle has a chondritic δ56Fe (deviation in 56Fe/54Fe from the IRMM-014 standard in parts per thousand) value or not remains under debate. The current view is that the observed average δ56Fe of mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) cannot be explained by partial melting of mantle source with chondritic value alone. Here, we report Fe isotope compositions on 29 MORB glasses sampled along a flowline traverse across the East Pacific Rise (EPR) axis at 10°30′N. These glasses show large MgO variation (1.8–7.4 wt.%) that forms a compositional continuum resulting from varying extent of fractional crystallization, which is accompanied by systematic Fe isotopic variation. Fractional crystallization modeling suggests that early crystallization of olivine, pyroxene and plagioclase gives rise to an iron enrichment trend and an increase in δ56Fe. Once Fe-Ti oxides appear on the liquidus and begin to crystallize, the FeOt and TiO2 contents of the residual melt decrease rapidly, which lead to a slight decrease in δ56Fe. These observations indicate that significant Fe isotope fractionation can indeed take place during MORB melt evolution. Hence, δ56Fe values of variably evolved MORB melts do not represent those of primary MORB melts and thus cannot be used to infer mantle source Fe isotope compositions. Importantly, δ56Fe values of primary MORB melts after correction for the effect of fractional crystallization can be well reproduced by mantle melting. Therefore, our study supports the idea that the Fe isotope composition of the accessible Earth is close to be chondritic. We note that conclusion would assume that the core, which takes up ∼90% of the Earth’s Fe, must have a chondritic Fe isotope composition.

Background The development of sarcopenia is attributed to normal aging and factors like type 2 diabetes, obesity, inactivity, reduced testosterone levels, and malnutrition, which are factors of poor prognosis in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). This study aimed to perform a meta-analysis to assess whether preoperative sarcopenia can be used to predict the outcomes after cardiac surgery in elderly patients with CAD. Methods PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane library, and Web of Science were searched for available papers published up to December 2020. The primary outcome was major adverse cardiovascular outcomes (MACE). The secondary outcomes were mortality and heart failure (HF)-related hospitalization. The random-effects model was used. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were estimated. Results Ten studies were included, with 3707 patients followed for 6 months to 4.5 ± 2.3 years. The sarcopenia population had a higher rate of MACE compared to the non-sarcopenia population (HR = 2.27, 95%CI: 1.58–3.27, P 2 = 60.0%, Pheterogeneity = 0.02). The association between sarcopenia and MACE was significant when using the psoas muscle area index (PMI) to define sarcopenia (HR = 2.86, 95%CI: 1.84–4.46, P 2 = 0%, Pheterogeneity = 0.604). Sarcopenia was not associated with higher late mortality (HR = 2.15, 95%CI: 0.89–5.22, P = 0.090; I2 = 91.0%, Pheterogeneity P = 0.792; I2 = 90.5%, Pheterogeneity = 0.001), and death, HF-related hospitalization (HR = 1.37, 95%CI: 0.59–3.16, P = 0.459; I2 = 62.0%, Pheterogeneity = 0.105). The sensitivity analysis revealed no outlying study in the analysis of the association between sarcopenia and MACE after coronary intervention. Conclusion Sarcopenia is associated with poor MACE outcomes in patients with CAD. The results could help determine subpopulations of patients needing special monitoring after CAD surgery. The present study included several kinds of participants; although non-heterogeneity was found, interpretation should be cautious.

Background: Toxoplasmosis caused by infecting with Toxplasma gondii is a kind of parasitic disease that prevalent all over the world and does great harm to pregnant women and newborns. Effective, rapid and accurate diagnosis T. gondii is urgently needed to prevent and treatment the toxoplasmosis. The purpose of this study was to develop a rapid visual detection assay using recombinase aided amplification (RAA) and lateral flow dipstick (LFD) coupled with CRISPR-Cas13a fluorescence, henceforth RAA-Cas13a-LFD, for detection of T. gondii.Methods: Targeting 529bp gene of T. gondii, the primers and probes for RAA-Cas13a-LFD assay were designed and screened. The reaction time of RAA-LFD-Cas13a assay was optimized, as well as the sensitivity and specificity was further validated. Finally, the diagnostic performance of T. gondii was evaluated using the RAA-Cas13a-LFD assay for clinical blood samples.Results: The RAA-Cas13a-LFD assay was performed in an incubator block at 37℃ within 2h, and the amplicons were visible through LFD for naked eye visualization. The detection limit of the developed RAA-Cas13a-LFD assay was 1×10-6 ng/μL with high specificity for T. gondii. Compared with qPCR assay, there was a consistent positive rate among the clinical blood samples. Conclusion: In this study, A rapid and visual RAA-Cas13a-LFD assay was developed. It requires no sophisticated equipment and shows promise for on-site surveillance of T. gondii.

Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) induced a foam-cell-like phenotype of the vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), leading to the inflammatory responses incorporating Toll-like receptor- (Tlr-) mediated cellular alterations. However, the role of Tlr4 in foam cell formation and underlying molecular pathways has not been comprehensively elucidated. To further investigate the mechanism, VSMCs were incubated with different doses of oxLDL, and then, the lipid, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, Tlr family genes, and the foam cell phenotype were explored. We observed that oxLDL induced foam cell-like phenotype in VSMCs and led to lipid and ROS accumulation in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, in the Tlr family, Tlr4 demonstrated the strongest upregulation under oxLDL stimulation. Simultaneously, oxLDL induced activation of Src, higher expression of Nox2, and lower expression of Mnsod, Sirt1, and Sirt3. By interfering the TLR4 expression, the phenotype alteration, lipid accumulation in VSMCs, and Src kinase activation induced by oxLDL were abolished. After interfering Src activation, the oxLDL-induced lipid accumulation and foam cell phenotype in VSMCs were also alleviated. Furthermore, the ROS accumulation, upregulated Nox2 expression, downregulated Sirt1, Sirt3, and Mnsod expression in VSMCs under oxLDL stimulation were also relieved after the knockdown of Tlr4. Additionally, overexpression of Sirt1 and Sirt3 ameliorated the ROS accumulation and foam cell-like marker expression in VSMCs. These results demonstrated that beyond its familiar role in regulating inflammation response, Tlr4 is a critical regulator in oxLDL-induced foam cell formation in VSMCs via regulating Src kinase activation as well as Sirt1 and Sirt3 expression.

Background: Aortic valve sclerosis (AVSc), a common precursor to calcific aortic valve disease, may progress into advanced aortic stenosis with hemodynamic instability. However, plasma biomarkers of such a subclinical condition remain lacking. Since impaired fibrinolysis featuring dysregulated tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) is involved in several cardiovascular diseases, we investigated whether endogenous t-PA was also associated with AVSc.Methods: Plasma t-PA levels were measured in 295 consecutive patients undergoing standard echocardiography and Doppler flow imaging. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to assess the association between t-PA and AVSc. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed for determining the diagnostic value of t-PA for AVSc. The performance of adding t-PA to clinical signatures of AVSc was evaluated. Concentration of t-PA was assessed in human sclerotic and non-sclerotic aortic valves by histology and immunohistochemistry analysis.Results: Plasma t-PA was higher in patients with AVSc than in non-AVSc counterparts (median, 2063.10 vs. 1403.17 pg/mL, p < 0.01). C-statistics of plasma t-PA for discriminating AVSc was 0.698 (95%CI: 0.639–0.758). The performance of t-PA for identifying AVSc was better among male and non-hypertensive patients [C-statistics (95%CI): 0.712 (0.634–0.790) and 0.805 (0.693–0.916), respectively]. Combination of t-PA and clinical factors improved classification of the patients (category-free NRI: 0.452, p < 0.001; IDI: 0.020, p = 0.012). The concentration of t-PA was three times higher in sclerotic compared to non-sclerotic aortic valves.Conclusion: Elevated circulating t-PA level confers an increased risk for AVSc. Further prospective studies with larger sample size are needed to examine if t-PA could serve as a diagnostic clinical marker for AVSc.

Toxoplasmosis, a parasitic disease resulting from Toxoplasma gondii infection, remains prevalent worldwide, and causes great harm to immunodepressed patients, pregnant women and newborns. Although various molecular approaches to detect T. gondii infection are available, they are either costly or technically complex. This study aimed at developing a rapid visual detection assay using recombinase-aided amplification (RAA) and lateral flow dipstick (LFD) coupled with CRISPR-Cas13a fluorescence (RAA-Cas13a-LFD) to detect T. gondii. The RAA-Cas13a-LFD assay was performed in an incubator block at 37 °C within 2 h, and the amplification results were visualized and determined through LFD by the naked eye. The detection limit was 1 × 10−6 ng/μL by our developed RAA-Cas13a-LFD protocol, 100-fold higher than that by qPCR assay (1 × 10−8 ng/μL). No cross-reaction occurred either with the DNA of human blood or Ascaris lumbricoides, Digramma interrupta, Entamoeba coli, Fasciola gigantica, Plasmodium vivax, Schistosoma japonicum, Taenia solium, and Trichinella spiralis, and the positive rate by RAA-Cas13a-LFD assay was identical to that by qPCR assay (1.50% vs. 1.50%) in detecting T. gondii infection in the unknown blood samples obtained from clinical settings. Our findings demonstrate that this RAA-Cas13a-LFD assay is not only rapid, sensitive, and specific and allows direct visualization by the naked eye, but also eliminates sophisticated and costly equipment. More importantly, this technique can be applied to on-site surveillance of T. gondii.

We previously found that Tlr4 participated in inflammation response in VSMCs under oxLDL stimulation. However, the role of Tlr4 in foam-cell formation and underlying molecular pathways has not been comprehensively elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the role of Tlr4-mediated mechanisms in oxLDL induced foam-cell formation within VSMCs. Methods: After incubated with different dose of oxLDL, the lipid, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and foam-cell phenotype of the VSMCs were detected. The alteration of Tlr family, ROS and lipid accumulation regulators including the Src kinase, Nox2, Nox4, Mnsod and sirtuins were measured. Then the Tlr4 was knock down and underlying cellular change and altered molecules were detected. Results: We showed that oxLDL induced foam-cell like phenotype in VSMCs and led to lipid and ROS accumulation in a dose-dependent manner. OxLDL induced the strongest upregulation of Tlr4 in the Tlrs family and initiated change of Src activation, Nox2, Mnsod, sirt1 and sirt3 expression. The effect of oxLDL was abolished by Tlr4 knockdown. Furthermore, knocking down of Tlr4 reduced Src activation and led to restored Sirt1/Sirt3 expression. Moreover, inhibiting or knocking down the Src kinase diminished lipid accumulation in VSMCs under oxLDL treatment. And overexpression of Sirt1/3 relieved the oxLDL induced ROS accumulation and foam-cell phenotype in VSMCs.Conclusions: These results demonstrated that Tlr4 is a critical regulator in oxLDL induced foam cell formation of VSMCs via mediating Src kinase as well as Sirt1 and Sirt3. Beyond the role of Tlr4 in inflammation response of VSMCs, we provide an integrated mechanism about TLR4 in VSMCs phenotype transition under oxLDL stimulation.

Continentalcollision zones have been proposed as primary sites of net continental crustal growth. Therefore, studies on syn-collisional granitoids with mafic magmatic enclaves (MMEs) are essential for testing this hypothesis. The Baojishan (BJS) and Qumushan (QMS) syn-collisional plutons in the North Qilian Orogen (NQO) on the northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau have abundant MMEs in sharp contact with host granitoids, sharing similar constituent minerals but with higher modal abundances of mafic minerals in MMEs. The QMS host granitoids have high Sr/Y and La/Yb ratios, showing adakitic compositions, which are differentfrom the BJS granitoids. Based on bulk-rock compositions and zircon U-Pb age-dating, recent studies on these two plutons proposed that MMEs represent cumulates crystallized early from the same magmatic system as their host granitoids, and their parental melts are best understood as andesitic magmas produced by partial melting of the underthrusting upper ocean crust upon collision with some terrigenous sediments under amphibolite facies. Here, we focus on the trace-element geochemistry of the constituent mineral phases of both MMEs and their host granitoids of the QMS and BJS plutons. Weshow that different mineral phases preferentially host different trace elements; for example, most rare earth elements (REEs and Y) reside in titanite (only found in the QMS pluton), amphibole, apatite, epidote and zircon (mostly heavy-REEs); and high-field-strength elements (HFSEs) reside in biotite, titanite, amphibole and zircon. Based on the mineral chemical data, we show that for these two plutons, MMEs are of similar cumulate origin, crystallized from primitive andesitic melts in the early stage of granitoid magmatism. The primitive andesitic melts for these syn-collisional granitoids are most likely produced by the partial melting of the oceanic crust, supporting the hypothesis of continental crustal growth considering the syn-collisional granitoids represent juvenile continental crust. As evidenced by distinct mineral compositions, the two plutons have different parental magma compositions, for example higher TiO2 content and higher Sr/Y and La/Yb ratios in the QMS parental magmas, a signature best understood as being inherited from the source. The higher TiO2 content of the parental magma for the QMS pluton leads to the common presence of titanite in the QMS pluton (absent in the BJS pluton), crystallization of which in turn controls the trace-element (REE, Y, Nb, Ta and others) systematics in the residual melts towards an adakitic signature. Therefore, parental magmas with high TiO2 content and high Sr/Y and La/Yb ratios, as well as their further fractionation of titanite, are important factors in the development of adakitic compositions, as represented by the QMS host granitoids. This model offers a new perspective on the petrogenesis of adakitic rocks. The present study further demonstrates that, in general, mineral chemistry holds essential information for revealing the petrogenesis of granitoid rocks.

We present the results of our study on 16 Cretaceous granitoid plutons along the south‐east coast of continental China. The zircon U–Pb ages and the bulk‐rock Rb–Sr isochron age (R2 = 0.935) indicate that the granitoids represent the last episode of magmatism (119–92 Ma) associated with the paleo‐Pacific Plate subduction beneath continental China. These granitoids show large compositional variation that is to a first‐order consistent with varying extents of magma evolution, which is best expressed by a large SiO2/MgO range and correlated trends of SiO2/MgO with the abundances and ratios of major and trace elements. The correlated Nd (eNd(t) = −6.1 to −1.2) and Hf (eHf(t) = −4.7 to +3.4) isotopic variation reflects parental magma compositional differences as a result of varying sources and processes. The Nd–Hf isotope data indicate that these granitoids were produced by mature continental crust melting with significant mantle input (~20–60%). Rhyolite‐MELTS modelling shows that relative to the less evolved (i.e., low SiO2/MgO) granitoid plutons, the progressively more evolved (i.e., varying larger SiO2/MgO) plutons can be explained by varying extents (~24% to 67%) of fractional crystallization. The origin of the magmas parental to the granitoids is best explained by a two‐stage process: (a) subducting slab dehydration‐induced mantle wedge melting for basaltic magmas and (b) ascent and underplating/intrusion of the basaltic magmas caused the mature crustal melting for the granitoid magmas. The systematic northward decrease in eNd(t) and eHf(t) suggests progressively more enriched crustal material towards the north, but it may very well indicate northward crustal thickening, permitting a greater extent of crustal assimilation.

The geology and magmatism of the northern Mariana Trough (NMT) represent a type example for the development of a back-arc basin (BAB). It is a mature spreading center in the south and propagating northward via rifting of arc and rear arc lithosphere in response to trench retreat and overriding plate extension in space and time. It is thus essential to fully characterize its tectonomagmatic processes that are potentially of global significance. For this reason, we carried out a comprehensive geochemical study on basaltic samples (glasses) from the NMT axis from 17 to 23°N by analyzing a full suite of major and trace elements, Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf radiogenic isotopes and stable Fe isotopes. The Fe isotopes, in particular, have the potential to offer novel perspectives beyond the aforementioned geochemical variables. From south to north, the δ 56 Fe of the NMT basalts (NMTB) decrease systematically, varying from a MOR-like value of +0.12‰ to an arc-like value of 0.00‰. Importantly, incompatible element abundances and Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf isotope compositions of the NMTB also show systematic along-latitude variations. Positively correlated with δ 56 Fe, the abundances of fluid-insoluble elements (e.g., Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf, Ti and heavy rare earth elements) show the south-to-north decrease, suggesting that the NMTB δ 56 Fe systematics are inherited from the magma source variation. The source variation is most consistent with an asthenosphere source in the south and progressively more depleted harzburgitic lithosphere source of prior melt depletion towards north. On the other hand, there are scattered but significant enrichment trends towards north in terms of Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf radiogenic isotopes and fluid-soluble incompatible elements (e.g., Ba, Rb, Cs, Th, U, K, Pb, Sr and light rare earth elements), which is consistent with south-to-north increase in slab material (e.g., slab fluids, sediments etc.) contribution. These north-to-south magma source systematics defined by the NMTB can be readily understood as a tectonic response to the back-arc basin development with time from initial arc-magmatism dominated by sub-arc lithospheric mantle melting with significant slab material contributions to back-arc rifting and to back-arc spreading center magmatism characterized by increasing asthenospheric mantle melting, decreasing slab material contribution and diminishing sub-arc lithospheric mantle participation. This tectonic-magma source evolution in space and time is manifested by the snapshot of the NMTB magmatism in terms of the geology, petrology and geochemistry. The NMTB δ 56 Fe values and fluid-insoluble incompatible element abundances are unaffected by slab materials, but controlled by the harzburgitic residues of previous melt extraction depleted in these elements with low δ 56 Fe at the early arc-magmatism stage in the north and by the asthenosphere of MORB mantle characteristics in the south with well-developed back-arc spreading system. Importantly, these observations affirm the understanding that compositionally depleted and physically buoyant lithosphere is prerequisite as the overriding plate for subduction initiation at its edges.

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is the most commonly used technique to determine the abundances of trace elements in a wide range of geological materials. However, incomplete sample digestion, isobaric interferences and instrumental drift remain obvious problems that must be overcome in order to obtain precise and accurate results. For this reason, we have done many experiments and developed a set of simple, cost-effective and practical methods widely applicable for precise and rapid determination of trace element abundances in geological materials using ICP-MS. Commonly used high-pressure digestion technique is indeed effective in decomposing refractory phases, but this inevitably produces fluoride complexes that create new problems. We demonstrate that the fluoride complexes formed during high-pressure digestion can be readily re-dissolved using high-pressure vessel at 190 °C for only 2 h for 50 mg sample. In the case of isobaric interferences, although oxide (e.g., MO+/M+) and hydroxide (e.g., MOH+/M+) productivity is variable between runs, the (MO+/M+)/(CeO+/Ce+) and (MOH+/M+)/(CeO+/Ce+) ratios remain constant, making isobaric interference correction for all other elements of interest straightforward, for which we provide an easy-to-use off-line procedure. We also show that mass-time-intensity drift curve is smooth as recognized previously, for which the correction can be readily done by analyzing a quality-control (QC) solution and using off-line Excel VBA procedure without internal standards. With these methods, we can produce data in reasonable agreement with recommended values of international rock reference standards with a relative error of 60% of time (e.g., 60 h).

The Laoshan granite is an example of the widespread intraplate granitoids of early Cretaceous age in eastern continental China. The petrogenesis of these granitoids remains in dispute and we choose the Laoshan granite as the representative case to study these granitoids. Zircons from the Laoshan granite give a crystallization age of ~120 Ma, which is consistent with the emplacement age of ~ 126 Ma given by the bulk-rock Rb-Sr isochron. Representative samples from the granite show a large range of major element compositional variation (e.g., SiO2/MgO = 64 to 1937), reflecting a varying degree of fractional crystallization of plagioclase, alkali feldspar, amphibole, biotite and accessory phases as observed. The samples are enriched in light rare earth elements, Rb, Th and U, but depleted in Ba and Sr with negative Eu anomalies. The high 87Sr/86Sr (0.7083 to 1.2265) is largely caused by variably high Rb/Sr (~0.31 to 91 with an average of ~13) due to feldspar fractionation. The low ƐNd(t) (−13.8 to −19.5), eHf(t) (−14.6 to −24.4), and (206Pb/204Pb)i (16.244 to 17.304) are consistent with significant contributions of the lower continental crust to magmas parental to the Laoshan granite. The origin of the parental magmas is best understood as resulting from anatexis of the lower crust (~20% − 25% partial melting of the mafic granulite) triggered by and mixed with the underplating and intruding basaltic magmas. The basaltic magmas were likely derived from melting of the thinning lithosphere being transformed into the asthenosphere as the result of “basal hydration weakening” with the water ultimately coming from dehydration of the stagnant paleo-Pacific slab in the mantle transition zone.

Jurassic-Cretaceous granitoids are widespread in eastern continental China and have been considered by many as resulting from paleo-Pacific subduction. However, the actual mechanism of their petrogenesis remains speculative. In order to address this important problem and on the basis of our regional study, we hypothesized that the coastal granitoids may result directly from the paleo-Pacific plate subduction, whereas the widespread granitoids in the continental interiors ultimately result from dehydration of the paleo-Pacific slab stagnated in the mantle transition zone ( Niu et al., 2015 ). Here, we present the very first study testing this hypothesis. We sampled 18 Jurassic-Cretaceous granitoid plutons along a ~ 1300 km long traverse parallel to the inferred paleo-Pacific subduction from the southeast coastline to the Xiaoqinling in the continental interiors and carried out a detailed study on these plutonic samples, including zircon U Pb geochronology, bulk-rock major and trace element compositions and Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopic characteristics. These plutons give varying zircon crystallization ages of ~146 to 100 Ma. They are mostly granitic and minor granodioritic, quartz monzonitic and syenitic in composition, enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs), depleted in high field-strength elements (HFSEs) and have varying negative Sr and Eu anomalies. The plutons in the continental interiors show significant positive correlations of Nd (eNd (t) = −25.5 to −10.9) and Hf (eHf (t) = −31.5 to −11.3) isotopes with Pb isotopes (206Pb/204Pb (t) = 15.827 to 17.622), with the enriched endmember characterized by low eNd (t), eHf (t) and 206Pb/204Pb (t). The plutons towards the coastal region have relatively high eNd (t) (−9.0 to −5.2), eHf (t) (−11.2 to −4.1) and 206Pb/204Pb (t) (18.051 to 18.349). The coastal granitoids are best explained as resulting directly from subduction slab dehydration induced mantle wedge melting and resultant crustal anatexis, whereas the interior granitoids are best interpreted as resulting from mature crustal anataxis caused by basaltic magmatism associated with mantle lithosphere thinning, ultimately triggered by dehydration of paleo-Pacific slab stagnant in the mantle transition zone.

The effect of paleo-Pacific subduction on the geological evolution of the western Pacific and continental China is likely complex. Nevertheless, our analysis of the distribution of Mesozoic granitoids in the eastern continental China in space and time has led us to an interesting conclusion: The basement of the continental shelf beneath East and South China Seas may actually be of exotic origin geologically unrelated to the continental lithosphere of eastern China. By accepting the notion that the Jurassic–Cretaceous granitoids in the region are genetically associated with western Pacific subduction and the concept that subduction may cease to continue only if the trench is being jammed, then the termination of the granitoid magmatism throughout the vast region at ~88 ± 2 Ma manifests the likelihood of “sudden”, or shortly beforehand (~100 Ma), trench jam of the Mesozoic western Pacific subduction. Trench jam happens if the incoming “plate” or portion of the plate contains a sizeable mass that is too buoyant to subduct. The best candidate for such a buoyant and unsubductable mass is either an oceanic plateau or a micro-continent. We hypothesize that the basement of the Chinese continental shelf represents such an exotic, buoyant and unsubductable mass, rather than seaward extension of the continental lithosphere of eastern China. The locus of the jammed trench (i.e., the suture) is predictably located on the shelf in the vicinity of, and parallel to, the arc-curved coastal line of the southeast continental China. The influences of hyperhomocysteinemia on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), stroke and new-onset hypertension are unclear. The aim of the study is to explore the associations of homocysteine levels with stroke, CVDs, and new-onset hypertension in Chinese individuals.This retrospective cohort study included outpatients and inpatients from the Department of Geriatrics at Ruijin Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine from January to December 2000. They were divided based on their homocysteine (Hcy) levels in 2000: Q1 ( 15 μmol/L) and according to whether they had hypertension at baseline. PubMed ID: 30329061, Carposina sasakii Matsumura is one of the most destructive fruit-boring pests of pome and stone fruit trees in eastern Asia. Because larvae complete their development inside a single fruit, larval density per fruit is a critical factor in their survival, development, and fecundity. The effect of larval density was examined to determine the ideal density for devising an economic and sustainable mass-rearing system for harvesting of C. sasakii. Mass production of insects of the same age of a specific stage is not only important in biological control, but also in pheromone extraction, culturing of entomopathogenic nematodes and fungi, etc. Life history data for six larval densities (1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20, 21-30, and 31-40 larvae/apple) were collected at 25.5 ± 0.5°C, 75.0 ± 5.0% RH, and a photoperiod of 15:9 (L: D) h. Data were analyzed using the age-stage, two-sex life table. The results showed that the highest preadult survival rate (42.00%), fecundity (104.70 eggs), and population parameters (intrinsic rate of increase r = 0.0718 d-1, net reproductive rate R0 = 23.03 eggs, and finite rate of increase = 1.0744 d-1) were observed at a density of 1-5 larvae/apple. However, when the rearing costs and production rate were considered, the density of 16-20 larvae/apple was the most economical for mass-rearing C. sasakii in order to achieve a daily harvest rate of 1,000 pupae (from 273 apples per day). Strain hardening for ductility remains challenging especially at high yield strength when dislocation plasticity is usually invalid. The hetero-deformation provides an effective route to induce extra back stress hardening specifically in hetero-structures inherently with large mismatch of mechanical responses, e.g. flow stress and strain hardening etc., upon applied loading. In this paper, both strengthening and strain hardening were investigated in a dual- phase steel, consisting of ductile γ-austenite and almost non-deformable B2 intermetallic phase as the second phase of volume fraction of 23%. The chemical composition was 0.86C, 16Mn, 10Al, 5Ni, balance Fe (wt.%). Of special note is two distinct hetero-deformation responses during both tensile and interrupted unload-reload testing. One is the yield-drop, while the other is hysteresis loop. Both unceasingly appear even from the elasto-plastic yield stage up to whole uniform deformation. The measured back stress and resultant back stress hardening account for a large proportion of global flow stress and strain hardening. Further, both Schmid factor and Kernel average misorientation (KAM) values were measured after tensile deformation. Un-expected, only γ-grains bordering on B2-phase show a significant decrease in the average Schmid factor, relative to almost unchanged in left γ-grains still next to γ-ones as well as B2-phase. This indicates that γ-grains adjacent to B2-phase bear the vast majority of plastic strains, not simple strain partitioning between γ and B2. Because of this, from the onset of yielding to end of tensile deformation, those γ-grains, in contrast to left γ-grains and B2 phase, exhibit a maximal increment in KAM values. This serves as a solid evidence of the generation of geometrically necessary dislocations to accommodate strain gradient near γ/B2 phase boundaries. It turns out that hetero-deformation due to plastic incompatibility induces the operation of back stresses, leading to both strengthening and strain hardening as well. Finally, a microstructure-based model was developed to calculate back stress which was well consistent with experimentally measured back stress.

The abundant syn-collisional granitoids produced and preserved at the northern Tibetan Plateau margin provide a prime case for studying the felsic magmatism as well as continental crust growth in response to continental collision. Here we present the results from a systematic study of the syn-collisional granitoids and their mafic magmatic enclaves (MMEs) in the Laohushan (LHS) and Machangshan (MCS) plutons from the North Qilian Orogenic Belt (NQOB). Two types of MMEs from the LHS pluton exhibit identical crystallization age (~430 Ma) and bulk-rock isotopic compositions to their host granitoids, indicating their genetic link. The phase equilibrium constraints and pressure estimates for amphiboles from the LHS pluton together with the whole rock data suggest that the two types of MMEs represent two evolution products of the same hydrous andesitic magmas. In combination with the data on NQOB syn-collisional granitoids elsewhere, we suggest that the syn-collisional granitoids in the NQOB are material evidence of melting of ocean crust and sediment. The remarkable compositional similarity between the LHS granitoids and the model bulk continental crust in terms of major elements, trace elements, and some key element ratios indicates that the syn-collisional magmatism in the NQOB contributes to net continental crust growth, and that the way of continental crust growth in the Phanerozoic through syn-collisional felsic magmatism (production and preservation) is a straightforward process without the need of petrologically and physically complex processes.

This paper briefly discusses the advantages and disadvantages of applying smart meters and sensors in power grid, especially for monitoring energy consumption in buildings within appropriate structures. The methodology of analyzing data generated from meters is consulted from CIBSE Guide F. In the end, a case study with employing commercial software NoWatt to monitor energy usage in an academic building was carried out, whose results show that smart meter grid with suitable architecture can contribute to monitoring energy usage and identifying potential or existing waste efficiently.
