Abstract

Honey is one of the oldest natural compounds that come from ancient times to nowadays with health benefits. It has been used for the treatment of several diseases, but its role in oral health faces real skepticism due to the high concentration of carbohydrates in its composition. Many studies over the years have confirmed several pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antihistaminic, etc. It is composed of different chemical compounds like carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, organic acids, phenolic compounds, and volatile substances. Honey contains many enzymes such as invertase, catalase, glucose oxidase, and acid phosphorylase, as well as traces of vitamins B2, B4, B5, B6, B11, and vitamin C, minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, potassium, magnesium. A promising challenge is the use of honey as a targeting product obtained from green synthesis, with high-efficiency thanks to nanotechnology. This study aims to investigate the potential benefits of honey in oral health, leveraging its diverse biological activity like antimicrobial, and antioxidant effects. Additionally, our scope was to provide scientific evidence supporting the use of honey in dentistry, emphasizing its broader health benefits and novel applications in oral health care. 6. Salivary Oxidative-Antioxidant Profile Following Adjunctive Gaseous Ozone Administration in Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Abstract

Background: Periodontitis is associated with increased oxidative stress, which may impair treatment outcomes. Ozone therapy has shown promise in reducing oxidative stress and improving periodontal health. This study examined the impact of adjunctive gaseous ozone administration on salivary oxidative stress markers in patients with periodontitis stages II–IV and grades A–C undergoing non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT). Methods: Ninety patients with periodontitis were randomly allocated to either the test group (NSPT with gaseous ozone administration) or the control group (NSPT alone) using computer-generated randomization. The OzoneDTA system was used to deliver ozone at 2100 ppm for 60 s per site once weekly for 4 weeks. Clinical periodontal parameters (probing depth [PD], clinical attachment level [CAL], plaque index [PI], gingival index [GI]) and salivary oxidative stress markers (malondialdehyde [MDA], total antioxidant capacity [TAC], superoxide dismutase [SOD]) were assessed by blinded examiners at baseline, 3, and 6 months post-treatment. Results: Mixed ANOVA revealed significant three-way interactions between time, treatment, and stage or grade for clinical and biochemical measures (p < 0.001). The test group exhibited significant improvements in TAC (mean difference: 0.45 ± 0.12 mmol/L, p = 0.002), MDA (−0.38 ± 0.09 nmol/mL, p = 0.001), and SOD (65 ± 18 U/mL, p < 0.001) compared with the control group, with more pronounced effects in stages III and IV. Large effect sizes (Cohen's d > 0.8) were observed for the test group between baseline and 6 months for all markers. Conclusions: Gaseous ozone administration as an adjunct to NSPT can effectively improve clinical periodontal parameters and salivary oxidative stress markers, particularly in stages III and IV periodontitis. The enhanced outcomes may be attributed to ozone's antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties, which synergistically reduce oxidative stress and promote periodontal healing. Abstract

Purpose: The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the long-term clinical outcomes of bone regeneration procedures using algae-derived plant hydroxyapatite (Algipore® FRIOS®) compared with demineralized anorganic bovine bone (Bio-Oss®), in combination with autologous blood-derived PRP. Materials and Methods: Partially edentulous patients with severe atrophy of posterior maxillary treated by means of the split bone technique in a two-stage grafting procedures were observed for up to seven years after implants placement. After surgeries, the natural porous fluorohydroxyapatite (FHA) (Algipore® FRIOS®; Group, n = 29) or anorganic bovine bone (Bio-Oss® Group, n = 28) with autogenous bone in a 50:50 composite ratio with PRP, were administered in a 2.8-mm critical-size defect (CSD). Four months later, implants were placed at second-stage surgery. Results: A sample of fifty-seven consecutive patients who required sinus augmentation was included in the study, and 57 implants were placed. There was no drop out or loss of follow-up of any case. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed a comparable pattern of newly formed bone in both groups after seven years of functional loading for implants placed after sinus augmentation using porous fluorohydroxyapatite and anorganic bovine bone. No significant difference in marginal bone loss was found around implants in both groups. Conclusions: The favorable implant outcomes suggest both biomaterials are suitable for sinus grafting in severely atrophic maxillae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
