Lifelong learning is all forms of learning from cradle to grave. Lifelong learning requires everyone to improve themselves. People are expected to be lifelong learners because school knowledge is insufficient. In this framework, educational approaches all over the world focus on lifelong learning and need lifelong learners. This study adopted a qualitative research design to investigate teachers' views on lifelong learning. The sample consisted of 30 teachers from different branches. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview guide. The data were analyzed using content analysis. Participants viewed lifelong learning as a process not limited to schools. They also associated it with all kinds of learning activities and personal growth. They believed lifelong learning was necessary for technological advances, social change, and a high quality of life. They stated that the goals of lifelong learning were accessing educational opportunities, increasing knowledge and skills, and transforming students into qualified people. They noted that motivation, education systems, and social and cultural changes affected lifelong learning.

Factors influencing intrapersonal and interpersonal abuse, neglect, and quality of life have not received much attention from scholars. Few studies on intrapersonal and interpersonal abuse and neglect have focused on employees in organisations without addressing the problem from children or students' points of view. In light of this knowledge, the current study used a socio-ecological perspective to illustrate the factors that influence both intrapersonal and interpersonal abuse and neglect. These factors can be attributed to family structure, individual factors, macrosystem factors, contextual factors, quality of life, and emotional abuse.

Objective: The aim of the present systematic review was to consolidate findings related to emotion recognition accuracy among individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The review also examined emotion recognition accuracy assessment methods as well as the contribution of gender to emotional recognition accuracy. Method: A total of 43 articles were identified based on inclusion criteria using PRISMA guidelines for article retrieval. Results: 58% of retrieved articles reported significantly decreased emotion recognition accuracy among individuals with ADHD relative to neurotypical peers, with either global or emotion-specific differences identified. Notably, studies finding a significant difference in emotion recognition accuracy were of significantly lower quality according to a quality review checklist than the articles finding no difference (p < 0.001). For example, when use of control conditions and multiple measures of emotion recognition accuracy were employed, no study found a significant difference in emotion recognition accuracy between individuals with and without ADHD. Regarding potential gender differences, not a single study included gender diversity beyond sex assigned at birth. The majority (86%) of studies included a predominantly male sample, with 15% including only male participants. While differences in emotion recognition accuracy were found between male and female participants in 7% of cases, future research is needed to identify the contribution of gender diversity.

Objective: Children with ADHD often experience functional impairments across various aspects of daily life. This study addresses the dearth of longitudinal research on functional impairment trajectories from preschool to school age in children with symptoms of ADHD and comorbid disorders. Methods: We investigated the extent to which functional impairments were associated with ADHD symptoms, along with behavioral and anxiety symptoms, from age 3.5 to 8 years. Utilizing parent- and teacher-reported data, we analyzed associations between global impairment, and dimension scores (e.g., family; child quality of life (QoL); learning; play/leisure activities; and friends) and symptoms at ages 3.5 and 8 years (n = 783). Results: The mean parent global impairment score increased from 0.31 (standard deviation (SD) = 0.40) to 0.83 (SD = 0.63) from 3.5 to 8 years, while the teacher impairment scores slightly decreased. Specific parent impairment dimension scores, particularly QoL, learning, and friends, significantly increased. Preschool ADHD and comorbid behavioral symptoms reported by parents weakly predicted impairment at 8 years. By age 8 years, impairment and symptoms exhibited moderate to strong correlations for all impairment dimensions. Parents reported greater child impairment during school age across settings compared to preschool, while teachers' impairment profiles remained consistent across ages. Conclusions: These findings suggest that parents perceive impairment as more pronounced at age 8 years and more strongly associated with symptoms of both ADHD and comorbid disorders than at age 3.5 years. Notably, for teachers, a robust correlation between inattention symptoms and learning impairment was observed, with substantially higher impairment scores reported for boys compared to girls.

Objective: This study focused on purpose as a key mechanism of posttraumatic growth for university student survivors of sexual assault. Participants: An online survey was completed by 278 participants of various ethnic, racial and gender backgrounds, recruited through email, social media, department subject pools, and Amazon Mechanical Turk. Methods: Researchers used mixed methods, concurrent triangulation approach in which quantitative and qualitative data were collected simultaneously with closed and open-ended questions. Results: Hierarchical multiple regression demonstrated that age, purpose in life, high magnitude stressors, and trauma history were significantly related to posttraumatic growth. Emergent themes described the impacts of sexual assault, how sexual assault impacts purpose, and ways in which purpose impacted posttraumatic growth. Conclusion: Results confirmed the association of purpose with posttraumatic growth as well as other key impacts of trauma that should be investigated further. Next steps include evaluating therapeutic interventions focused on purpose.

Objective: To examine the impact of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19) pandemic on Residents Assistants (RA) at a public university in the Midwest. Participants: Sixty-seven RAs that had been offered an RA position for the '20-'21 academic year. Methods: An online cross-sectional survey measuring socio-demographics, stress, and well-being was fielded. MANCOVA models evaluated the impact of COVID-19 on well-being of Current RAs and compared to the non-current RA groups. Results: Sixty-seven RAs provided valid data. Overall, 47% of RAs had moderate-severe anxiety and 86.3% had moderate-high level of stress. Current RAs perceiving a great impact of COVID on life had significantly more stress, anxiety, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress than those who did not. RAs who started then quit experienced significantly higher secondary trauma compared to Current RAs. Conclusions: Further research is needed to better understand the experiences and of RAs and to develop policies and programs to support RAs.

Purpose: The choices that international students make regarding abroad study destination selection or leave the host country after graduation are influenced by a variety of factors that are both related to positive and negative aspects of the host country. Design/methodology/approach: This study builds on the push-pull factor theory and examines the factors that influence international students' decision to choose abroad study destination (Finland) or leave the country after their graduations. The data were collected through an online survey of 195 international students currently studying in Finland and were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) technique. This method offers a flexible and robust approach to test relationships, particularly in situations where sample size and the conceptual model are small and complex. Findings: The results show that international students' choice of study destination (Finland) is influenced by the host country's quality of life, academic excellence and economic factors such as salary and benefits. Unfamiliarity with the culture and language barriers have a negative impact on their decisions to stay in the host country after graduation. Originality/value: By utilising a comprehensive analysis of both push and pull factors in relation to the host country, this study unveils a novel perspective in the field of international student mobility. The results provide insights to the institutional leaders and policymakers into how to attract and retain international students by focusing on the factors that matter most to international students. To attract more international students, higher education institutions (HEIs) should include career development activities, e.g. job fairs, language training, scholarships and internships in their curriculum. Moreover, it provides recommendations on how to create a welcoming and supportive environment that promotes academic excellence and career development.

PWS Smart-Start is a behavioral caregiver training program developed specifically for caregivers of children with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) ages 3 to 14. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the acceptability and preliminary efficacy of the program. Thirty-four caregivers of children with PWS received the PWS Smart-Start training using online live video-coaching across a 10-week period. The impact of the training on a variety of variables including caregiver and child behavior, caregiver stress and burnout, and family functioning were evaluated using a quasi-experimental pretest posttest design. Results indicated statistically significant decreases across child behavior challenges and parental stress and burnout following the training. Statistically significant improvements were also seen in parenting practices, the quality of the parent-child relationship, and family quality of life. Results of social validity measures indicated caregiver satisfaction with the program. These preliminary results indicate that the PWS Smart-Start program has the potential to not only support children with PWS through behavioral challenges but also reduce caregiver stress and burnout and improve a variety of aspects of family life. Future research is needed to replicate and further validate these results and to extend the exploration of other behavior analytic interventions for this population.

Longitudinal analyses have revealed informative patterns about health, mental health, adaptive skills, autism symptoms, and social skills during the transition to adulthood for autistic individuals. This study expands on these findings by investigating the trajectories of positive affect from age 15 to 30 years using a heterogeneous cohort (n = 253) of individuals first referred for autism at an early age. Group-based trajectory modeling was used to identify commonalities in trajectories using both caregiver-reported and self-reported positive affect. We analyzed differences between these trajectory groups on demographic and behavioral measures, as well as indices of adult functioning characterized for either higher and lower cognitive abilities. Caregiver-reported values revealed four different patterns of stability and change, and self-reported values revealed three distinct patterns of stability and change with variable intercepts. These trajectory groups differed by autism severity, intelligence quotient, daily living skills, and different indices of adult outcomes, including social relationships, work, and activity engagement. There were some differences in trajectory shape by reporter, with agreement between caregiver-report and self-report being limited after age 23 years. The results of this study have implications for how we measure subjective indices of experience across the spectrum of cognitive abilities present in autism.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess how Sustainable food consumption (SFC) can improve the quality of life for consumers and encourage green food production. Sustainable consumption is an important factor in achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations. However, achieving SFC requires government policies, consumer environmental values and accessible channels. Design/methodology/approach: This paper investigates how to promote SFC intentions using a sample of 386 students from Chinese universities. By using SPSS Process software, this study developed and tested a theoretical model grounded in the stimulus-organism-response (SOR) framework. Findings: The findings indicate that environmental emotions mediate the relationship between sustainability knowledge and SFC intentions. Contextual factors such as green self-efficacy (GSE) moderate both the direct relationship between environmental emotions and SFC intentions and the indirect relationship between sustainability knowledge and SFC intentions via environmental emotions. The paper continues with a discussion of the findings and their practical implications. Originality/value: This paper applied the SOR model to the context of students' sustainability knowledge and SFC intentions. This also presents environmental emotions as a mediation variable, and green self-efficacy as a moderating factor, and constructs the moderated mediation model. This is one of the novel contributions to the literature on SFC intentions and sustainability knowledge.

Graduating from college is widely associated with social and personal advancement, yet many young graduates are not experiencing these benefits. Drawing on 127 interviews with college graduates in the United States and Spain who face employment precarity or economic instability, this study asks: How do these graduates understand their social positions and worth? How does the institution of higher education shape these understandings? The data demonstrate that respondents in both countries largely describe themselves as stalled or stuck. I argue that these are perceptions of "expectational liminality" stemming from the disjuncture between respondents' expectations and their experiences as college graduates. In addition, I show how three narratives describing the professional/financial success, life course progression, and internal transformation expected of graduates shape respondents' sense of expectational liminality. I discuss the effects of higher education on graduates' self-perceptions in uncertain contexts and the relevance of expectational liminality to other contexts where there are disjunctures between expectations and reality.

Introduction: Persistence in treatment is important in balancing diabetes and preventing complications. ADHD impairs quality of life and functioning in many areas of life. The aim of this study is to evaluate the possible association of ADHD and diabetes glycemic control among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: All data were obtained from Maccabi Healthcare Services (MHS) automated databases. This retrospective cross-sectional study uses electronic medical records from the Maccabi Healthcare Services database during the years 2010 to 2020. Using a propensity score with the variables of age, gender, and duration of diabetes, we compared a group of 1,582 patients with T2DM and ADHD to 1,582 patients with T2DM and without ADHD. We used a t-test to compare continuous variables and a Mann-Whitney "U" test for non-parametric testing. In addition, we used multivariate logistic regression with a cutoff of several HbA1c values in T2DM patients with and without ADHD during 2019 to 2020. The proportion of patients with HbA1c values above 10%, 9%, and 8% in the group of patients with ADHD was 4.7 to 5.9 times higher than in patients without ADHD. In addition, the OR in the multivariate logistic regression was 4.2 (95% CI [2.5, 6.8]), 4.3 (95% CI [3.1, 6.1]), and 2.7 (95% CI [2.2, 3.4]) for cutoff of HbA1c of 10%, 9%, and 8%, respectively. Conclusion: Patients with co-morbid ADHD and T2DM have a higher incidence of poor glycemic control. The findings extend the knowledge on the relationship between ADHD and diabetes and highlight the need for further research to improve treatment.

This study investigated vocational students' mental health by identifying the prevalence of depression, stress, anxiety, eating disorders and associated risk and protective factors among 16- to 18-year-old students attending a vocational college in Malta. Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) was also investigated. A sample of 422 students completed standardised self-report mental health tools and a demographic and personal variables' questionnaire. A total of 64.4% of students were found to be struggling with at least one of the mental health conditions assessed while 36.7% reported a suspected eating disorder. The prevalence rates of depression, anxiety and stress (moderate, severe or extremely severe) were 43.3%, 48.8% and 29.3% respectively. Students had a lower HRQOL than the reference population as indicated by European norm data. Only 13.5% of participants sought help from mental health services. Risk factors include female gender, poverty, being LGBTQ, not living with both parents, past negative school experiences, poor relationships and presence of suspected or diagnosed conditions or disabilities, amongst others. Having supportive relationships with family, peers and school personnel emerged as protective factors.

Collective impact (CI) initiatives provide a promising collaborative community-based approach for addressing health disparities, but they are challenging to evaluate. This paper provides a detailed strategy for addressing these challenges through a case study, with the goal of not only of evaluating the CI, but also putting organizations in a position to implement and maintain sustainable self-evaluation efforts over time. A three-phase evaluation strategy was developed and implemented via a community-academic partnership to assess the impact of the CI. Process and outcome data from a CI to address health disparities in a Chicago community were collected and analyzed. The evaluation strategy, following the developmental, formative, and summative phases, helped a CI overcome barriers and build capacity for ongoing evaluative work for its members. Considering the flexible, low-technology approach, this strategy is a valuable resource in assisting individuals seeking to create a successful and sustainable CI evaluation.

Individuals with intellectual disabilities need an affective and sexual education adapted to their characteristics. There are few interventions that meet these objectives and offer empirical evidence of their efficacy. To respond to the limitations of existing interventions, an evidence-based affective-sexual educational intervention for adults with a mild degree of intellectual disability is proposed: SALUDIVERSEX. Participants will be randomly assigned to an intervention group that will receive the SALUDIVERSEX program or to a waiting list group. The intervention will be implemented by educators of occupational centers after a thorough training phase. Our main hypothesis is that the SALUDIVERSEX program will improve the sexual health and quality of life, through the joint action built into three components: the acquisition of basic information, the development of skills and strategies and the achievement of healthy attitudes towards the experience and expression of sexuality. The results of this approach could have important implications for optimizing the quality of life and self-determination of individuals with Intellectual disability by contributing to the development of healthy sexuality.

Background: Knowledge about ageing from the perspective of people with intellectual disability is extremely scarce, which means a lack of evidence-based interventions for healthy ageing adjusted to their needs. Aim: To investigate how people with intellectual disability experience ageing, prior to an educational intervention. Methods: Twenty-six persons with mild intellectual disability, age 42-74 (mean 61.3) were interviewed and the text was analyzed qualitatively. Results: The main findings are reflected in the themes "Live for today--tomorrow you are old" and "Need of support to enable a meaningful ageing." The participants avoided thinking about ageing, which they associated with retirement, loneliness and social isolation, increased need for help in everyday life, worsening health and death. Meaningful ageing meant continuance of leisure activities and working as long as possible. Conclusions: Interventions to prepare people with mild intellectual disability for healthy ageing must take into account these people's loneliness.

Research has increasingly focused on the intersection between gender diversity and autism. Understanding the foci, methods, and rigor of recent studies could help guide and maximize impact in this accelerating research area. We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed literature on this topic published between 2018 and 2023. The search generated 1432 records after deduplication. Included studies (N = 84) were of English language, featured original qualitative or quantitative findings, and examined a psychosocial connection between autism and gender spectra variables. Autism prevalence among gender-diverse people was the most-studied sub-topic. Methodological rigor was acceptable overall; however, we identified recurrent threats to generalizability and validity, including inconsistent conceptualization of constructs (e.g. gender dysphoria), weak participant sampling and characterization, and reliance on unvalidated measures. Addressing these limitations and meaningfully engaging with community shareholders will be critical to enhancing the replicability and clinical impact of future research.

Objective: This study explores the depressive symptoms and quality of life (QoL) of women in relationships with partners diagnosed with ADHD, as well as the role of engagement in health-promoting activities (HPA) on these outcomes, spotlighting the often-neglected perspective of these women. Methods: Employing a cross-sectional approach, the study used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to explore associations between partners' ADHD functional impairment, women's involvement in HPA, and their depressive symptoms and QoL. Results: Functional impairment in partners with ADHD was positively associated with women's depressive symptoms and negatively associated with their QoL, whereas women's engagement in HPA was positively associated with their QoL and negatively associated with their depressive symptoms. Conclusions: The findings suggest that women partnered with individuals diagnosed with ADHD may face an elevated risk of depressive symptoms and lowered QoL. The results highlight the potential need for a more comprehensive clinical approach to adult ADHD treatment that considers functional impairments and the experiences of partners. Incorporating HPA into therapeutic strategies appears beneficial. However, longitudinal research is needed to examine the direction of these associations and to develop potential interventions to support these women.

The author uses a dialogical autoethnographic approach informed by symbolic interactionist theory to examine the role of toys, play, and parenting decisions on his childhood development and adult opportunities and interests. He examines how self, others, social contexts, and objects, particularly toys and adult analogues for those toys, came together to produce a range of life skills and interests central to his adult life. He also interviewed his mother, following Heewan Chang's recommendation not simply to rely on an individual's recall. His analysis identified three sets of skills and interests central to his identity: reading and creative writing; design, construction, and repair; and musical performance and composition. He considers these within the context of the 1950s and 1960s, including the expansion of youth culture, his suburban neighborhood, and his childhood friendships. He also reviews the potential of an autoethnographic approach to social science research.

The subjective well-being of Chinese higher vocational college students remains an underexplored topic, despite its importance for shaping effective educational policies and practices. This research aims to identify and analyze key variables influencing subjective well-being in this population, addressing the lack of a comprehensive theoretical framework that integrates the unique elements of the Chinese context and the educational experiences of vocational students. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative surveys distributed to students from multiple institutions with qualitative interviews conducted with a selected subset of participants. Key variables examined include academic stress, social support, career aspirations, financial stability, and institutional environment. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is utilized to assess the relationships between these factors. Findings indicate that social support and career aspirations positively influence subjective well-being, whereas academic stress and financial instability exert negative effects. Additionally, institutional factors, such as infrastructure quality and student services, significantly impact well-being. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the quality of life and satisfaction levels among vocational students, offering insights that can inform future interventions. Policymakers and educators can leverage these results to develop frameworks and initiatives aimed at improving student welfare within higher vocational education institutions.

This research paper explores the relationship between compassion, meaning-making, and curricular community engaged learning (CEL) in a university setting. We contend that CEL, as a key form of community-focused experiential learning (EL), can play an important role in helping address the wellbeing of students, faculty, and staff by providing opportunities to engage in what they consider to be meaningful activities. Our critical examination of this relationship draws on primary research conducted in Winter and Spring 2022 with members of a large Canadian university and its affiliated colleges. This mixed-methods research includes a Qualtrics-based survey with over 2,500 respondents, combined with a series of interdisciplinary, online focus group discussions with faculty, staff, and students. Our findings reveal that many participants have experienced a "crisis of meaning" in their academic and work lives. They thus seek avenues to engage in meaningful, creative, compassionate, and community-focused activities that provide them with opportunities to foster their overall well-being. Participants emphasized the heightened importance of such endeavours after the COVID-19 pandemic as they pursue deeper connections with others and a stronger sense of purpose beyond utilitarian academic or employment performance.

Subjective well-being is a form of self-evaluation of life by referring to cognitive and affective aspects. This systematic review analyzes 13 international journals on factors influencing older adults' subjective well-being. The review planning uses the SPIDER formulation: Sample, Phenomenon of Interest, Design, Evaluation, and Research Type. This review analysis shows that older people can feel the meaning and satisfaction of life, spread positive things, and have a sense of security and happiness. The results of the systematic review analysis show that various factors influence subjective well-being in the elderly. Several factors can influence subjective well-being in terms of demographics, social activities, physiological factors, and psychological factors. Among them are volunteer activities, economic income, family support, participation in various social and religious activities, education, physical health, income satisfaction, spirituality and religiosity, positive experiences and emotions, sleep quality, self-efficacy, and internet use. These results can be a reference and recommendation for conducting further and more specific research on subjective well-being factors in older adults.

This study examines reverse acculturative stress among Saudi students returning to their home country after studying in the USA. A study on Saudi students is particularly important due to scant empirical attention on Middle Eastern students. Given the population size of returning Saudi students, it is worth analyzing their adaptation to their home country, especially as the KSA has renewed its efforts at "saudification of the workforce," a goal that relies on a highly educated population. 96 university students participated in the study. Because of the gap in values between Saudi Arabia and the USA, the study hypothesized that Saudi returnees who reported higher levels of reverse culture shock would report lower life satisfaction and quality of life. Additionally, the study posited that students' identification with their Saudi heritage would correlate negatively with reverse culture shock. A novel tripartite intervention model is proposed to reduce reverse culture shock.

International students are aspirational and expectant of their learning improving the quality of their life. The stress from academic pressure and acculturative challenges exasperates them from fully experiencing a quality higher educational experience. Despite this, they continuously strive to learn and adjust as they construct their academic identities. While research studies provide several independent perspectives on identity using social, psychological, historical, and political orientations, the current small-scale explorative study focuses on a socio-psychological perspective, discussing the evolution of academic identities of early-career international graduate research (ECIGR) students. This study emerged from the lack of a comprehensive definition of students' academic identity and may contribute to this evolving definition. It adopts a case-study approach with semi-structured interviews and applies the situated learning theory. It finds that adopting a learner-centric pedagogy that considers student's intellectual abilities and academic knowledge, offering opportunities to explore available resources to develop a critical lens, is a sustainable approach towards construction of purposive academic identities. The findings from this explorative small-scale study provides a strong basis for future studies as it identifies an urgent need for more work to be done in this space.

The declining interest in science learning, along with students' perception that science is irrelevant to their daily lives, has been identified as a significant issue. This research aimed to help students connect abstract scientific concepts with their personal and everyday experiences. To achieve this, the research utilized the metaphysical principles implied by scientific concepts, a component of Kuhn's paradigm. To replace the abstract term 'metaphysical meanings', the term 'Meaning of Life implied by Scientific Concepts' (MLS) was introduced to make these metaphysical principles more accessible and comprehensible for students. Using MLS, activity sheets were developed and implemented with 57 lower-secondary students. The results showed that students could effectively identify real-life examples of the presented MLS, the number of students who successfully generated MLS increased with additional class sessions, and the content of the MLS expressed by the students was thoughtful and meaningful. Post-activity interviews indicated that students found this approach interesting and helpful for understanding concepts, and teachers were impressed by the quality of the students' work, expressing a desire to implement this approach in their classes. It is concluded that using MLS to connect abstract scientific concepts with students' everyday lives is both feasible and applicable in school science.

The primary purpose of education is preparation for life. But what kind of life, and life for whom? Within the social studies, emphasis has long been placed on preparation for civic life in diverse and democratic societies within an interconnected world. This remains essential. There is an ongoing need for people who are willing and able to address the challenges of society, including structural problems such as racism, classism, and patriarchy. However, in addition to continuing threats to the quality of "human" life, growing concerns have also arisen regarding the quality, indeed the survival, of "all" life on the planet. One of the most urgent challenges of today is the decline of the environment upon which all life depends. This paper examines the implications of the environmental crisis for the social studies. First, I explore the deep interconnectivity that exists between humans and the nonhuman world and, by extension, between our social and environmental challenges. Next, I consider the implications of these connections for a socioenvironmental approach to social studies education. In addition to practical curricular and instructional factors, I argue that we must promote the development of a "critical ecological perspective" through which to interpret the fundamental relationships between humans and the world.

Through a multistakeholder partnership, this research aims to catalyze the development of a blue economy corridor (BEC) through community-based asset mapping in the eastern portion of the Tar-Pamlico River Basin in North Carolina, a geographic area predominated by physically and culturally rural landscapes. Underpinned by appreciative inquiry, this project aims to counter a deficit model of community development in this portion of eastern North Carolina by increasing awareness of quality of life assets that communities currently possess and may leverage for sustainable economic, environmental, and social development through their inclusion in a digital interactive map freely available to the public.

Each August, Sugpiaq Elders, community members, and educators gather in Cape Alitak to host Akhiok Kids Camp, a week-long culture camp that provides a space for local Sugpiaq youth to learn and carry forward traditional lifeways and promotes youth's self-esteem, identity, and healthy choices. This article traces the legacy of the camp and outlines its ongoing vision and curriculum, including the Indigenous values and principles of education that guide camp activities. Of particular focus is the role of camp in fostering Sugpiaq youth's sense of connectedness to their homelands, waters, community, and culture, a focus that promotes healing, cultural resurgence, and wellbeing for Sugpiaq youth. This description of Akhiok Kids Camp highlights the valuable role that culture camps play in turning Indigenous youth toward the brilliance of their lands and lifeways, and the importance of respecting the knowledge and leadership of Indigenous families in this work.

The study aims to improve the existing unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) framework to understand the adoption of e-learning platforms in developing countries and to understand the relevance of the quality of study life among students. The constructs for the UTAUT model were chosen based on the e-learning study context and expanded with the variable study-life quality. The expanded model was tested with empirical data collected from graduate and post-graduate students of higher education institutes. The hypotheses testing and adequacy of the expanded model were analysed using structural equation modeling using SmartPLS v 3.2.8. The study's findings indicate that nine out of the twelve hypothesized paths significantly influenced students' engagement with e-learning platforms, and a total of six significant variables explained a variance of 65.8% of the dependent variable behavioral intention. The variable study-life quality had the highest [beta] coefficient value of 0.380, indicating that it is the most significant factor for e-learning adoption in this study setting. The study adds to the publication on adoption theories by providing an expanded UTAUT framework that is empirically tested.

Experts in public health and education alike have long advocated for the engagement of youth in nature to foster movement, human-nature connectedness, and mental wellbeing. Physical and health education teachers in school-based programs continue to find a variety of ways to help their students be physically active in the natural environment due to the plethora of positive benefits. This paper describes a unit entitled Nature-Based Physical Activity in Pictures that utilized Photovoice to engage youth and foster human-nature connectedness.

In the current study, we focused on measuring the development of important professional attitudes, such as "compassion satisfaction" and "burnout." Students from four different colleges worked in teams to conceptualize innovative engineering products. During the ideation phase of their project, participants completed a Professional Quality of Life survey to assess metrics related to "compassion satisfaction" and "burnout." On average, the combined "compassion satisfaction" score was high for both medical students (42/50) and non-medical students (43/50). In terms of "burnout," 77% of medical students and 81% of non-medical students reported low "burnout"; the average "burnout" score for medical students was 19/50, and for non-medical students 17/50. Only one statement produced a statistically significant difference between groups. For the statement, "I am a caring person," only 31% of medical students self-described as being a very caring person 'very often' as opposed to 62% of non-medical students. Through this innovative curriculum project, faculty were able to measure the level of student "compassion satisfaction," and "burnout" for the students involved. Surrounded by the rationality of science, students learned to communicate and contribute to projects that supported a positive sense of contribution and effort, and a low perception of "burnout."

Disability and chronic disease can have a profound effect on individuals' sexuality and sexual health, resulting in decreased quality of life for many. While sexuality and sexual health are identified within the domain of occupational therapy (OT), this topic is not routinely addressed in clinical practice. This qualitative phenomenological study explored the perceived needs, facilitators, and barriers to addressing sexuality in clinical practice by 10 graduate OT students recruited from one Western New York (WNY) university. Semi-structured virtual interviews were conducted utilizing a researcher developed interview guide. The Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) was used as the conceptual framework for the study. Data were analyzed inductively using thematic analysis, followed by mapping the identified themes deductively to the established domains of the TDF. Ten domains were identified as likely to influence whether or not sexuality is addressed in clinical practice, including knowledge, skills, social/professional role and identity, beliefs about capabilities and consequences, intentions, environmental context and resources, social influences, emotions, and behavior regulation. The results highlight the barriers, facilitators, and action steps, as perceived by OT students, that are needed in order to effectively address sexuality in clinical practice, including increasing sexual health curriculum within OT education, providing opportunities for practice and experience, and integrating sexual content into routine practice.

This small-scale pilot study was developed to examine the perceived occupational balance of graduate occupational therapy students and implement an education and coaching intervention to promote occupational balance for those who have difficulty achieving and maintaining it. Although literature provides many examples of interventions to facilitate stress relief in graduate students, this is the first to address the promotion of occupational balance in this effort, which has been identified as a student-reported need. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach was used to obtain quantitative and qualitative data on occupational therapy students' satisfaction with their balance of activity in all areas of occupation. The impact of that balance on stress levels and occupational satisfaction was examined utilizing an investigator developed scaled survey and The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure. Participants (N=22) were MSOT and OTD students from all academic years of their program. A six-week group education program was implemented. One additional 30-minute individual coaching session was held virtually with each student and the primary investigator to target individual goals. Survey data collected before the start of the educational series and again at its conclusion indicate an aggregate decrease in students' perceived stress (-0.85); an increase in perceived occupational performance (mean +1.26); and an increase in perceived occupational satisfaction (mean +2.10). The desired outcome of the intervention was to provide students with strategies to increase lifestyle balance to help manage some of the stresses of graduate academia, and ultimately increase students' health and wellness to promote retention and successful completion of graduate education.

Sense of coherence (SOC) is a relevant contributor and predictor of the individuals' mental and physical health. There are a number of studies about SOC, but only two validation articles of the sense of coherence scale (SOCS) were found on adolescents and none on children. The aim of this research was to validate the SOC scale in youth under 18. We hypothesized that younger children and children without psychiatric problems will have higher SOC than older ones, and children with psychiatric symptoms. We also wanted to examine the factor structure of both the 13 and the 29 item versions of the scale to study which is more valid in child and adolescent population. 199 children and 198 adolescents were included in the study; the mean age was 14.3 (SD 2.1) years. The sample included average youth from schools and youth under psychiatric treatment. Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and Inventory of Life Quality (ILK) were used for validation of the SOCS. SOCS-13 was applied to compare SOC of children and adolescents. Children had higher SOC than adolescents in both samples. Males had higher SOC than females in children but not in adolescents. Psychiatric and behavioral symptoms were associated with a lower SOC regardless

This study aimed to develop and evaluate a training curriculum intended to enhance the quality of life for the elderly. As Thailand witnesses a demographic shift with increasing numbers of older adults, driven by declining birth rates and extended life expectancies, the importance of ensuring quality elderly care becomes paramount. The devised curriculum encompasses eight principal elements focusing on the elderly, defined as those aged 60 and above, addressing their physical and mental changes, well-being, health, and overall satisfaction. The content is holistic, integrating components of music, art, health care, and exercise. Delivered over a two-day period, the curriculum employs a structured approach featuring lectures, discussions, and knowledge exchanges, supported by a range of media and materials. Initial assessments revealed a moderate quality of life among the elderly, but post-training evaluations indicated enhanced knowledge, understanding, and positive attitudes towards the activities, pointing to an overall high level of effectiveness of the curriculum.

The experience of living with a chronic condition (CC) impacts adolescents' psychological and social adjustment and overall functioning. Considering the increased risk of psychosocial challenges among adolescents with CC, this study aimed to enhance our understanding of the psychological and social factors that impact their quality of life. It also compared the psychological and social variables among (a) adolescents with and without CC and (b) adolescents with CC who are and who are not victims of bullying. The results demonstrated that adolescents with CC showed more psychosocial difficulties than their peers, as they more frequently reported involvement in situations of violence, and demonstrated more difficulties at a psychological and emotional level. Further, being victims of bullying increased the psychosocial vulnerabilities of these adolescents. A better quality of life was associated with the following psychosocial factors: not being a victim of bullying or cyberbullying, having less anxiety and fewer depressive symptoms, liking school, receiving more support from family and friends, having better relationships with peers, and having fewer physical and psychological symptoms. These findings are significant for helping schools develop tools and strategies to address violence and support students with CC, who are at a higher risk of being involved in such situations and require a targeted response.

This quantitative comparative study was conducted to examine if, and to what extent, differences in health and functioning and quality of life exist for community college students who complete an academic mindfulness course. Surveyed student responses were captured by the Quality of Life Index (QLI) (Ferrans and Powers, 1985), dependent variables measured, and a non-directional two-tailed independent (unpaired) samples t test conducted. A univariate post-test only comparison group design was conducted to measure results of the mindfulness coursework intervention at the conclusion of the courses. A non-probability convenience sampling of 154 participants was collected, with both descriptive and inferential statics calculated. Data results indicated a statistically significant difference in health and functioning between the comparison and the intervention groups as well as quality of life between the comparison and the intervention groups. Effect size (Cohen's d) at a 95% confidence interval for those students who completed a mindfulness course was large for the overall QLI score as well as the health and functioning subscale. This study demonstrated positive results and statistical significance suggesting the utility of mindfulness coursework. Recommendations from this study include integrating mindfulness coursework in a classroom setting and offering mindfulness training as a stand-alone academic course.

Background: The conceptual framework for "School as a Protective Factor" approach was presented in a companion article in this issue of the journal. The current article describes the validation of the "School as a Protective Factor-Brief (SPF-Brief)," a 13-item survey measuring the 3 core constructs and 13 defining characteristics of this framework. Methods: The "SPF-Brief" was validated through 2 studies. The developmental study used a longitudinal design including 1349 participants who completed surveys over 5 semesters, while the validation study used a cross-sectional design with 2775 participants. Both studies included middle and high school students. Factor analysis, growth model analysis, criterion-related validation, and outcome analysis were employed. Results: Analyses provided strong evidence supporting the reliability and validity of the instrument and conceptual framework. Higher "SPF-Brief" scores were associated with higher math grades, English grades, and quality of life, as well as lower rates of anxiety, depression, conduct disorder, alcohol, e-cigarette, tobacco, and cannabis use. Effect size estimates ranged from moderate to strong. Conclusions: These findings suggest the utility of the "SPF-Brief" instrument and the "School as a Protective Factor" framework. Together, they may offer advantages to the traditional school climate approach.

Background: People with intellectual disabilities remain disadvantaged in many aspects of everyday life. Capability approach is an underused approach in social care research and has at its core the importance of having capabilities or opportunities to do what we value. We use this approach to explore how people with intellectual disabilities can be supported to lead flourishing lives. Methods: Interviews and focus groups were conducted with 50 people with intellectual disabilities and 28 family carers. Data were analysed using an adapted template approach and conceptual analysis. Results: Our analysis led to the identification of one overarching theme; 'Doing what you love and growing' and sub-themes; 'Choice, opportunity and empowerment', 'Being out in the world' and 'Lowered expectations and static lives'. Conclusion: People with intellectual disabilities can lead capability-deprived lives. Methodological and practice innovation is needed to better understand what people value and ensure they have capability sets that enable flourishing lives.

Anxiety is commonly experienced by autistic people and impacts on quality of life and social participation. New anxiety interventions are required to effectively meet the needs of autistic people. Personalised Anxiety Treatment-Autism (PAT-A©) is a bespoke, modular approach to treating anxiety in up to 12 sessions. This study explored the feasibility and acceptability of delivering PAT-A© in the UK National Health Service (NHS). A single-blind randomised controlled trial design. Thirty-four autistic adults were recruited via clinical services and randomised to receive either PAT-A© or enhanced treatment as usual (CCSP). Outcome assessments relating to anxiety, quality of life and related constructs were completed at baseline, immediately post intervention; and at 3 and 12 months. Seventy-one percent of the PAT-A© group and 65% of the CCSP met diagnostic threshold for at least three anxiety disorders. Retention was good across both groups, with 82% (N = 14/17) completing the full course of PAT-A© and 71% (N = 12/17) attending both psychoeducational sessions in CCSP. 94% in PAT-A© and 82% in CCSP completed some follow up assessment 3 months post-intervention. Thematic analysis of interview data revealed that many participants valued the personalised approach, developed transferable skills and experienced positive changes to their anxiety. Participants were willing to be recruited and randomised, PAT-A© was feasible to deliver in the NHS and the trial methods and materials were acceptable. Our findings indicate that a fully powered clinical and cost-effectiveness trial of PAT-A© is warranted.

Caregivers of children with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience more stress than caregivers of typically developing children but there is limited research evaluating caregivers' quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to describe the association of caregiver QoL in children with ASD and/or ADHD. This study included patients with ADHD and/or ASD seen in one pediatric specialty clinic between September 2018-August 2020. Caregivers were classified as those caring for children with ASD-only, ADHD-only, or youth with both conditions (ADHD + ASD). An adapted version of the PedsQL Family Impact Module was used to measure caregiver QoL. The sample included caregivers of 931 children. The majority of these children were male (74.7%), non-Hispanic white (63.3%), and aged 6 to 12 years (57.8%). Across the groups, significant differences were observed in patient age (p < 0.0001), preferred language (p = 0.005), and insurance (p = 0.001). Caregivers of non-Hispanic Black children had 4-times the odds of reporting feeling isolated from others (OR 4.36, 95% CI 1.19-16.00 p = 0.03). Those caring for children with ADHD-only had significantly lower odds of reporting helplessness or hopelessness (OR 0.45, 95% CI 0.26-0.80, p = 0.004), and difficulty talking about their child's health with others (OR 0.30, 95% CI 0.17-0.54, p < 0.0001). Similarly, caregivers of children who had ADHD + ASD reported higher odds of difficulty making decisions together as a family (OR 14.18, 95% CI 1.15-17.91, p=0.04) and difficulty solving family problems together (OR 45.12, 95% CI 2.70-752.87), p = 0.008). Caring for children with ADHD and/or ASD may affect caregiver QoL.

Purpose: To investigate the perceptions of parents/caregivers about the impact of oral conditions on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children/adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) compared to the perceptions of parents/caregivers of children/adolescents without ASD. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted involving 80 children/adolescents with ASD three to 16 years of age matched by sex and age with 80 children/adolescents without ASD and their parents/caregivers. Clinical examinations were performed for the diagnosis of dental caries experience (DMFT/dmft), clinical consequences of untreated dental caries (PUFA/pufa), visible plaque (VPI), bleeding on probing (BPI), malocclusion and traumatic dental injury (TDI). Parents/caregivers answered a questionnaire addressing sociodemographic characteristics and the Brazilian version of the Parental-Caregiver Perceptions Questionnaire (P-CPQ), which measures OHRQoL from the perspective of parents/caregivers. Data analysis involved the Wilcoxon test, chi-squared test and Poisson regression. Results: Dental caries experience impacted OHRQoL in the group with ASD regarding the total P-CPQ score (p < 0.001) as well as the "oral symptoms" (p = 0.011) and "wellbeing" (p < 0.011) domains. No differences were found between the perceptions of parents/caregivers of children/adolescents with ASD and perceptions of parents/caregivers of children/adolescents without ASD (p = 0.721). Conclusion: Dental caries experience can have a negative impact on the OHRQoL of children/adolescents with ASD.

Enhancing transportation skills is crucial in promoting quality of life for youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). To learn about transportation skill development and improve the transportation experiences of youth with IDD in China, we conducted in-depth interviews with special education teachers and parents of transition-age youth with IDD (i.e., 23 teachers and 19 parents) from five major cities in China. The purpose of this study was to explore the transportation experiences of youth with IDD through parents' and teachers' perspectives. Adopting the constructivist grounded theory method, three main themes were identified: (1) the need to develop transportation skills, (2) the practices for supporting transportation, and (3) the challenges of transportation for youth with IDD in China. The findings ascertain the importance of travel training to promote community inclusion of transition-age youth with IDD and disclose the helpful practices and existing barriers for improving youth's transportation skills. Limitations and implications for research, policy, and practice are also described.

Young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are vulnerable to transportation challenges which can contribute to a lack of community engagement. This article describes findings from a qualitative study in which we conducted one time, semistructured interviews with nine individuals with IDD (ages 18--25) and their parents/guardians in dyads. We also interviewed 10 adult service and local agency providers to incorporate different perspectives. Major themes included "family factors," "community structure," and "systems challenges" as barriers that impacted the transportation experiences of young adults with IDD and their families. We provide implications for transition-related professionals and suggestions for future research and policy focused on transportation.

Academic life in the present era is subject to several occupational stressors, including increased workloads, reduced research funding, tenuous career paths, and family-work conflicts. Such stressors affect academics' quality of life, wellbeing, and job satisfaction, and women are particularly vulnerable. There is, however, a dearth of information on such issues in the Arab World. We conducted a scoping review to map the current body of knowledge related to the institutional and socio-cultural factors that influence the wellbeing status of women working in academia in Arab countries. Fourteen articles were included. Several challenges threatening women's wellbeing in academia were identified including institutional factors (i.e., human resource policies and laws, workplace empowerment, and academic mentoring) and socio-cultural factors (i.e., work-life balance, culture and religion). Current human resources, policies, and labor laws do not adequately support maternal or complex family roles contributing to work-life imbalances and contribute to poor mental health outcomes for academic women working in academia in Arab countries. Although some of these challenges may stem from lingering cultural stereotypes about gender roles, this review highlights the need for professional development and mentoring programs for academic women in Arab countries, in addition to supportive institutional laws, policies, and resources for empowerment of women in academia.

Studies show that adolescents have a heightened sensitivity to the urban context, such as violence. This study explores factors influencing and determine the areas of influence of students' perceived stress when commuting from home to school in the city of Medellin, Colombia. To achieve these aims, a cross-sectional survey research design was employed with students in one school. A total of 301 students (aged 14-18) were chosen using convenience sampling. The data were analyzed using Machine Learning methodology (ML). Furthermore, a Geographic Information System (GIS) was employed to create an isoprobability map of areas of perceived stress. Among the students interviewed, 22.7% experienced stress while traveling to school. Socioeconomic, accessibility, transport and safety, urban violence and quality of life categories were found to be associated with school commute-related perceived stress. Within these categories, the traditional variables of distance (odds ratio [OR] = 5.21) and mode of travel (OR = 11.05) are significant. In addition, socioeconomic status (OR = 4.49), urban violence (OR = 1.04), high traffic accidents on the route to school (OR = 21.83) and poor perceived health (OR = 9.10) are significant and have a strong effect on stress. Stress perceived by adolescents during school commutes is largely explained by variables related to social and environmental factors that do not depend on the individual, such as urban violence, traffic accidents or the state of sidewalks. Therefore, public authorities should take appropriate measures to reduce students' stress during school commutes, which would have a positive effect on these adolescents.

This paper considers the state of contingent laborers, Ph.D. holders, lovers of robust scholarship, and hopeful academics who toil away in the neoliberal university in the search for the academic good life. The author argues that the academic good life is a fantasy and agrees that the fantasy is cruel, i.e. not attainable or livable, but does suggest the practices of teaching and conducting research, the practices that make up a scholarly life, are sustainable activities of a good life that can and should inform how we "use" the university. After drawing on Alasdair MacIntyre and Chris Higgins to picture the academic good life, Deane turns to theories of refusal articulated by Sandy Grande and Bonnie Honig to suggest refusal practices for reimagining lives that are academic and good.

Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are a common comorbidity in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Little is known about the impact that GI symptoms have on parental well-being. Parents of 409 children and adolescents with ASD completed the GI Symptoms Inventory, Parenting Stress Index-Short Form, World Health Organization Quality of Life Abbreviated Version, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. High levels of stress were demonstrated by parents with 40.1% receiving clinically significant scores. A relationship was found between parental stress and GI symptoms. Parental anxiety and depression were found at high levels but were not more common in parents of individuals with GI symptoms than those without. Lower levels of quality of life were found in parents of individuals with GI symptoms compared to parents of individuals without GI symptoms. Parents of children with GI symptoms were less satisfied with their personal and social relationships with others. Parents of children with GI symptoms had lower scores on a measure of perceived social support than parents of children and adolescents without GI symptoms. GI symptoms are stressful for parents and future research is needed to determine how to alleviate this stress and to improve the quality of life of parents of individuals with ASD.
