Abstract

The Safe Water and AIDS Project (SWAP), a non-governmental organization in western Kenya, opened kiosks run as businesses by community health promoters (CHPs) to increase access to health products among poor rural families. We conducted a baseline survey in 2014 before kiosks opened, and a post-intervention follow-up in 2016, enrolling 1,517 households with children 0.2 mg/ml) was similar from baseline to follow-up (7% vs. 8%, p = 0.57). The odds of reported diarrhea in children decreased from baseline to follow-up (odds ratios or OR: 0.77, 95% CI: 0.64–0.93) and households with detectable FCR had lower odds of diarrhea (OR: 0.53, 95% CI: 0.34–0.83). Focus group discussions with CHPs suggested that high product prices, lack of affordability, and expectations that products should be free contributed to low sales. In conclusion, modest reported increases in SWAP exposure and product sales in the target population were insufficient to impact health, but children in households confirmed to chlorinate their water had decreased diarrhea.

Abstract

This paper gives a summary of implementation activities in the realm of FAIR Digital Objects (FDO). It gives an idea which software components are robust and used for many years, which components are comparatively new and are being tested out in pilot projects and what the challenges are that need to be urgently addressed by the FDO community. After basically only one year of advancing the FDO specifications by the FDO Forum we can recognise an increasing momentum to test and integrate essential FDO components. However, many developments still occur as soloistic engagements that offer a scattered picture. It is widely agreed that it is now time to combine these different pilots to comprehensive testbeds, to identify still existing gaps and to turn some services into components of a convincing and stable infrastructure. This step is urgently needed to convince even more institutions to invest in FDO technology and therefore to increase FAIRness of the evolving global data space.

Abstract

Ticks transmit more vector-borne diseases in the United States than any other agent. Tick-borne diseases are caused by a variety of pathogens and are seen as protean manifestations. These diseases include lyme disease, relapsing fever, tularemia, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, Colorado tick fever, babesiosis and tick paralysis. In determining the probable cause of tick-borne illness, it is critical to be aware of both their geographic distribution and their clinical presentations. The empirical administration of appropriate antimicrobial therapy is often justified because of the substantial morbidity and mortality associated with a delay in diagnosing and treating these infections. In general, specific diagnostic laboratory tests should be used to confirm the clinical diagnosis of tick-borne illness instead of for screening.
