Accident and injury rates are high in the construction industry, and there are no significant signs of occupational safety and health (OSH) development. The OSH interests, skills, and knowledge of both employees and managers should be improved to gain long-lasting improvements. The Finnish construction industry has introduced a new safety training concept called Safety Training Park (STP) to meet these challenges. STPs consist of real-world training points and use new and innovative safety training methods aimed at stimulating both individual behavior change and quality change in overall conditions that ultimately aim to lead to improved safety performance at both the construction site and organizational levels. The trainings are based on multimodal information sharing and participation with the ultimate aim of provoking discussion on experiences and beliefs among the members of the trainee group. This study focuses on the Safety Training Park in northern Finland (STPNF). STPNF has been designed, constructed, and financed during a collaboration process that includes more than 80 organizations. In order to contribute to the discussion regarding sustainable work reaching from the employee level to the organizational level and beyond, STPNF is discussed both from microergonomic and macroergonomic perspectives.

Recent debate regarding the possibility for decreasing the risk of accidents within the construction industry has emphasized the need for innovative training methods. Training should combine behavior- and culture-based approaches, simulate real-life situations, and involve multiple methods. The concept of Safety Training Park (STP) has been developed to meet these challenges. Eighty stakeholders from the Finnish construction industry have been involved in the construction and financing of the STP in northern Finland (STPNF). This unique cooperation has contributed to the immediate success of the park. However, little is known regarding the creation process and how the utilization of the STPNF could be improved. This article presents as a case study the concept, joint creation process and lessons learned this far. Detailed descriptions of the STPNF, findings from focus group interviews, and evidence from the literature are presented with a focus on the pros and cons of the STPNF. The STP is a new and innovative method for safety training that stimulates different learning styles and inspires changes in individuals’ behavior and in the organizations’ safety climate. The stakeholders’ high commitment, a long-term perspective, and a strong safety climate are identified as preconditions for the STP concept to work.

The research presented in this document analyzes how safety values are defined and used in practice, in particular by managers, and how they affect employers’ and employees’ decisions and behaviour at work. The work comprises three complementary activities: a literature review on the value of safety and safety as a value, focusing on the moral, social and business dimensions that strengthen safety values; a set of semi-structured interviews with CEOs in several European countries, which collected their perception of safety as a value and its impact in company strategy and in the workplace; a Delphi survey (N=111), which collected consensus statements on the value of safety, on values that support safety, and the mechanisms that form and reinforce values that are perceived to support safety values in practice.

The amount of information available has increased due to the development of our modern digital society. This has caused an information overflow, meaning that there is lot of data available but the meaningful information or knowledge is hidden inside the overwhelming data smog. Nevertheless, the large amount of data together with the increased capabilities of computers provides a great opportunity to learn the behaviour of different kinds of phenomena at a more detailed level. The quality of life, well-being and a healthy living environment, for example, are fields where new information services can assist the creation of proactive decisions to avoid environmental problems caused by industrial activity, traffic, or extraordinary weather conditions. The combination of data coming from different sources such as public registers, companies’ operational information systems, online sensors and process monitoring systems provides a fruitful basis for creating new valuable information for citizens, decision makers or other end users. The aim of this thesis is to present the concept of intelligent information services and a methodological background in order to add intelligence using computational methods for the enrichment of multidimensional data. Moreover, novel examples are presented where new significant information is created and then provided for end users. The data refining process used is called data mining and contains methods for data collection, pre-processing, modelling, visualizing and interpreting the results and sharing the new information thus created. Information systems are a base for the creation of information services, meaning that stakeholder groups have access only to information but they do not own the whole information system that contains measurement systems, data collecting, and a technological platform. Intelligence in information services comes from the use of computational intelligent methods in data processing, modelling and visualization. In this thesis the general concept of such services is presented and concretized using five cases that focus on environmental and industrial examples. The results of these case studies show that the combination of different data sources provides fertile ground for developing new information services. The data mining methods used such as clustering and predictive modelling together with effective pre-processing methods have great potential to handle the large amount of multivariate data in this environmental context also. A self-organizing map combined with k-means clustering is useful for creating more detailed information about personal energy use. Predictive modelling using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) is well suited for estimating the number of tourists visiting a leisure centre and to find the correspondence between pulp process characteristics and the chemicals used. These results have many indirect effects on reducing negative concerns regarding our surroundings and maintaining a healthy living environment. The innovative use of stored data is one of the main elements in the creation of future information services. Thus, more emphasis should be placed on the development of data integration and effective data processing methods. Furthermore, it is noted that final end users, such as citizens or decision makers, should be involved in the data refining process at the very first stage. In this way, the approach is truly customer-oriented and the results fulfil the concrete need of specific end users. Tiivistelmä Informaation määrä on kasvanut merkittävästi tietoyhteiskunnan kehittymisen myötä. Käytössämme onkin huomattava määrä erimuotoista tietoa, josta voimme hyödyntää kuitenkin vain osan. Jatkuvasti mitattavan datan suuri määrä ja sijoittuminen hajalleen asettavat osaltaan haasteita tiedon hyödyntämiselle. Tietoyhteiskunnassa hyvinvointi ja terveellisen elinympäristön säilyminen koetaan aiempaa tärkeämmäksi. Toisaalta yritysten toiminnan tehostaminen ja kestävän kehityksen edistäminen vaativat jatkuvaa parantamista. Informaatioteknologian avulla moniulotteista mittaus- ja rekisteritietoa voidaan hyödyntää esimerkiksi ennakoivaan päätöksentekoon jolla voidaan edistää edellä mainittuja tavoitteita. Tässä työssä on esitetty ympäristöalan älykkäiden informaatiopalveluiden konsepti, jossa oleellista on loppukäyttäjien tarpeiden tunnistaminen ja ongelmien ratkaiseminen jalostetun informaation avulla. Älykkäiden informaatiopalvelujen taustalla on yhtenäinen tiedonlouhintaan perustuva tiedonjalostusprosessi, jossa raakatieto jalostetaan loppukäyttäjille soveltuvaan muotoon. Tiedonjalostusprosessi koostuu datan keräämisestä ja esikäsittelystä, mallintamisesta, tiedon visualisoinnista, tulosten tulkitsemisesta sekä oleellisen tiedon jakamisesta loppukäyttäjäryhmille. Datan käsittelyyn ja analysointiin on käytetty laskennallisesti älykkäitä menetelmiä, josta juontuu työn otsikko; älykkäät informaatiopalvelut. Väitöskirja pohjautuu viiteen artikkeliin, joissa osoitetaan tiedonjalostusprosessin toimivuus erilaisissa tapauksissa ja esitetään esimerkkejä kuhunkin prosessin vaiheeseen soveltuvista laskennallisista menetelmistä. Artikkeleissa on kuvattu matkailualueen kävijämäärien ennakointiin ja kotitalouksien sähköenergian kulutuksen pienentämiseen liittyvät informaatiopalvelut sekä analyysi selluprosessissa käytettävien kemikaalien määrän pienentämiseksi. Näistä saadut kokemukset ja tulokset on yleistetty älykkään informaatiopalvelun konseptiksi. Väitöskirjan toisena tavoitteena on rohkaista organisaatioita hyödyntämään tietovarantoja aiempaa tehokkaammin ja monipuolisemmin sekä rohkaista tarkastelemaan myös oman organisaation ulkopuolelta saatavien tietolähteiden käyttämistä. Toisaalta, uudenlaisten informaatiopalvelujen ja liiketoimintojen kehittämistä tukisi julkisilla varoilla kerättyjen, ja osin yritysten hallussa olevien, tietovarantojen julkaiseminen avoimiksi.

In the context of the Government’s Climate and Energy Strategy, it is estimated that the primary use of wood-based fuels in Finland will be 100 TWh by the year 2020. The overall target set for forest chips is 25 TWh, i.e. around 13.5 million m3. The objective of the research carried out by Metsäteho Oy and Pöyry Energy Oy was to produce as realistic as possible a total analysis of the possibilities of increasing the usage of wood-based fuels in Finland by 2020. The research showed that the growth objective set in the Government’s Climate and Energy Strategy can be attained through the supply and demand of wood-based fuels. However, realizing this potential would require major investments in the entire forest chip production system, because the competitiveness of wood-based fuels in energy generation is currently not at a sufficient level. The morphology of failed rabbit knee entheses is described after in vitro load to failure testing at low strain velocity. Avulsion fracture was the dominant failure mode both for the cruciate ligaments and the medial collateral ligament. The patellar ligament became avulsed in most cases from the patellar insertion. The ligamentous anterior attachment of the medial meniscus failed by a midsubstance rupture and the posterior fibrocartilaginous attachment by a rupture near to the meniscal horn. On histological inspection the failure characteristics usually appeared more elaborate, involving to different degrees all portions of the bone-ligament-bone complexes. Avulsion fracture through subchondral bone was often combined with a partial ligament midsubstance rupture. In few cases avulsion from the cement line was combined with a rupture between the uncalcified fibrocartilage and the ligament. The medial collateral ligament failed in one case entirely at the cement line of its femoral insertion. Horizontal rupture through the calcified fibrocartilage and a vertical cleavage crossing the tidemark were also observed. The superficial portion of the patellar ligament failed with a midsubstance rupture, and the deeper part with an avulsion through the calcified fibrocartilage or an avulsion fracture. The complex failure characteristics may be attributed to uneven loading, nonuniformity of the structure, and specific anatomical location. Subchondral bone beneath femoral and tibial insertions seems to be weaker than the transitional zone between soft tissue and hard bone at the enthesis. The overall inferior structural quality of a ruptured ligament has to be taken into account when parts of the original structure are used for suturing or reconstruction.
