Abstract

The performance of modular, networked quantum technologies will be strongly dependent upon the quality of their quantum light-matter interconnects. Solid-state colour centres, and in particular T centres in silicon, offer competitive technological and commercial advantages as the basis for quantum networking technologies and distributed quantum computing. These newly rediscovered silicon defects offer direct telecommunications-band photonic emission, long-lived electron and nuclear spin qubits, and proven native integration into industry-standard, CMOS-compatible, silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonic chips at scale. Here we demonstrate further levels of integration by characterizing T centre spin ensembles in single-mode waveguides in SOI. In addition to measuring long spin T_1 times, we report on the integrated centres' optical properties. We find that the narrow homogeneous linewidth of these waveguide-integrated emitters is already sufficiently low to predict the future success of remote spin-entangling protocols with only modest cavity Purcell enhancements. We show that further improvements may still be possible by measuring nearly lifetime-limited homogeneous linewidths in isotopically pure bulk crystals. In each case the measured linewidths are more than an order of magnitude lower than previously reported and further support the view that high-performance, large-scale distributed quantum technologies based upon T centres in silicon may be attainable in the near term.

Abstract

We present autoionization spectra of metastable Ar(8+) and C(4+), N(5+), O(6+) and Ne(8+) scattering off an Al(111) surface with incident energies down to 5 eV. The unprecedented quality of the experimental data permits the observation of a unique, yet undiscovered peak in the structures originating from the metastable projectiles compared to corresponding ground state configurations. Abstract

Auger LMM spectra and preliminary model simulations of Ar(9+) and metastable Ar(8+) ions interacting with a clean monocrystalline n-doped Si(100) surface are presented. By varying the experimental parameters, several yet undiscovered spectroscopic features have been observed providing valuable hints for the development of an adequate interaction model. On our apparatus the ion beam energy can be lowered to almost mere image charge attraction. Abstract

Multimodal communication research focuses on how different means of signalling coordinate to communicate effectively. This line of research is traditionally influenced by fields such as cognitive and neuroscience, human-computer interaction, and linguistics. With new technologies becoming available in fields such as natural language processing and computer vision, the field can increasingly avail itself of new ways of analyzing and understanding multimodal communication. As a result, there is a general hope that multimodal research may be at the “precipice of greatness” due to technological advances in computer science and resulting extended empirical coverage. However, for this to come about there must be sufficient guidance on key (theoretical) needs of innovation in the field of multimodal communication. Absent such guidance, the research focus of computer scientists might increasingly diverge from crucial issues in multimodal communication. With this paper, we want to further promote interaction between these fields, which may enormously benefit both communities. The multimodal research community (represented here by a consortium of researchers from the Visual Communication [ViCom] Priority Programme) can engage in the innovation by clearly stating which technological tools are needed to make progress in the field of multimodal communication. In this article, we try to facilitate the establishment of a much needed common ground on feasible expectations (e.g., in terms of terminology and measures to be able to train machine learning algorithms) and to critically reflect possibly idle hopes for technical advances, informed by recent successes and challenges in computer science, social signal processing, and related domains.

Kurzbeschreibung: Umweltprobenbank des Bundes Dieser Bericht fasst die wesentlichen Arbeiten der Umweltprobenbank des Bundes im Jahr 2020 zusammen. Die Umweltprobenbank des Bundes unterstützt die Umsetzung des Vorsorgeprinzips mit einer wissenschaftlichen Infrastruktur, einer umfassende Datenbasis zur Bestimmung und Bewertung des Ist-Zustandes der Umwelt und einer langfristigen Beobachtung der in der Umwelt stattfindenden chemischen, physikalischen und biologischen Entwicklungsprozesse. Dafür sammeln Fachleute Humanproben ausgewählter Standorte gemeinsam mit ökologisch repräsentativen Umweltproben, archivieren sie bei tiefkalten Temperaturen und führen Untersuchungen auf gesundheits- und umweltrelevante Stoffe durch. Auf diese Weise wird auch eine Kontrolle der Wirksamkeit umweltpolitischer Maßnahmen möglich, beispielsweise bei Beschränkungen der Verwendung von Stoffen. Environmental Specimen Bank This report summarises the main work of the Federal Environmental Specimen Bank in 2020. The Federal Environmental Specimen Bank supports the implementation of the precautionary principle with a scientific infrastructure, a comprehensive database for determining and assessing the current state of the environment and long-term monitoring of the chemical, physical and biological development processes taking place in the environment. For this purpose, experts collect human samples from selected sites together with ecologically representative environmental samples, archive them at cryogenic temperatures and perform analyses for substances relevant to health and the environment. This also facilitates monitoring the effectiveness of environmental policy measures, such as restrictions on the use of substances.

Abstract

Die Umweltprobenbank des Bundes sammelt standardisiert Human- und Umweltproben und lagert diese veränderungsfrei für zukünftige Untersuchungen. Die große Auswahl an unterschiedlichen Matrizes aus verschiedenen Probenahmegebieten ermöglicht einen Überblick über die Belastungssituation des Menschen und seiner Umwelt. Die Schadstoffanalytik erfolgt sowohl im direkten Anschluss an die Probenahme (Real-Time-Monitoring) als auch in retrospektiven Untersuchungen an den eingelagerten Proben. Die hohe Standardisierung ermöglicht die Reproduzier- und Vergleichbarkeit der gesammelten Proben und lässt so eine Aussage über die zeitliche Veränderung der Belastungen zu. Die Umweltprobenbank des Bundes ist ein exzellentes Werkzeug für das Monitoring der Schadstoffbelastungen der Umwelt und des Menschen. Geringe zeitliche oder marginale regionale Unterschiede an Schadstoffkonzentrationen sind erfassbar, da die hierzu notwendigen Analysen standardisierter Umwelt- und Humanproben aus unterschiedlichen Jahren und Regionen zum gleichen Zeitpunkt durchgeführt werden können. Die Langzeitbeobachtung von Schadstoffbelastungen in Umwelt- und Humanproben ist eine wichtige Grundlage für gesetzliche Regulierungen von Chemikalien und deren Erfolgskontrolle. Damit ist die Umweltprobenbank des Bundes ein essenzielles Instrument des umweltbezogenen Gesundheitsschutzes in Deutschland.

Abstract

PurposeThe aim of this study was to get a first overview of the exposure to the solvents and reproductive toxicants N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidone (NEP) in Germany. NMP and NEP metabolite concentrations were determined in 540 24-h urine samples of the German Environmental Specimen Bank collected from 1991 to 2014. With these data we were able to investigate NMP/NEP exposures over time and to evaluate associated risks.MethodsNMP metabolites 5-hydroxy-N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (5-HNMP) and 2-hydroxy-N-methylsuccinimide (2-HMSI) and NEP metabolites 5-hydroxy-N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidone (5-HNEP) and 2-hydroxy-N-ethylsuccinimide (2-HESI) were determined by stable isotope dilution analysis using solid phase extraction followed by derivatization (silylation) and GC–EI–MS/MS.ResultsWe were able to quantify 5-HNMP and 2-HMSI in 98.0 and 99.6% and 5-HNEP and 2-HESI in 34.8 and 75.7% of the samples. Metabolite concentrations were rather steady over the timeframe investigated, even for NEP which has been introduced as an NMP substitute only in the last decade. Calculated median daily intakes in 2014 were 2.7 µg/kg bw/day for NMP and 1.1 µg/kg bw/day for NEP. For the combined risk assessment of NMP and NEP exposure, the hazard index based on the human biomonitoring assessment I values (HBM I values) was less than 0.1.ConclusionsBased on the investigated subpopulation of the German population, individual and combined NMP and NEP exposures were within acceptable ranges in the investigated timeframe. Sources of NEP exposure in the 90s and 00s remain elusive.

Abstract

© 2017 Elsevier Ltd Background Neuroimaging studies have shown structural alterations in several brain regions in children and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Through the formation of the international ENIGMA ADHD Working Group, we aimed to address weaknesses of previous imaging studies and meta-analyses, namely inadequate sample size and methodological heterogeneity. We aimed to investigate whether there are structural differences in children and adults with ADHD compared with those without this diagnosis. Methods In this cross-sectional mega-analysis, we used the data from the international ENIGMA Working Group collaboration, which in the present analysis was frozen at Feb 8, 2015. Individual sites analysed structural T1-weighted MRI brain scans with harmonised protocols of individuals with ADHD compared with those who do not have this diagnosis. Our primary outcome was to assess case-control differences in subcortical structures and intracranial volume through pooling of all individual data from all cohorts in this collaboration. For this analysis, p values were significant at the false discovery rate corrected threshold of p=0·0156. Findings Our sample comprised 1713 participants with ADHD and 1529 controls from 23 sites with a median age of 14 years (range 4–63 years). The volumes of the accumbens (Cohen's d=−0·15), amygdala (d=−0·19), caudate (d=−0·11), hippocampus (d=−0·11), putamen (d=−0·14), and intracranial volume (d=−0·10) were smaller in individuals with ADHD compared with controls in the mega-analysis. There was no difference in volume size in the pallidum (p=0·95) and thalamus (p=0·39) between people with ADHD and controls. Exploratory lifespan modelling suggested a delay of maturation and a delay of degeneration, as effect sizes were highest in most subgroups of children (21 years): in the accumbens (Cohen's d=−0·19 vs −0·10), amygdala (d=−0·18 vs −0·14), caudate (d=−0·13 vs −0·07), hippocampus (d=−0·12 vs −0·06), putamen (d=−0·18 vs −0·08), and intracranial volume (d=−0·14 vs 0·01). There was no difference between children and adults for the pallidum (p=0·79) or thalamus (p=0·89). Case-control differences in adults were non-significant (all p>0·03). Psychostimulant medication use (all p>0·15) or symptom scores (all p>0·02) did not influence results, nor did the presence of comorbid psychiatric disorders (all p>0·5). Interpretation With the largest dataset to date, we add new knowledge about bilateral amygdala, accumbens, and hippocampus reductions in ADHD. We extend the brain maturation delay theory for ADHD to include subcortical structures and refute medication effects on brain volume suggested by earlier meta-analyses. Lifespan analyses suggest that, in the absence of well powered longitudinal studies, the ENIGMA cross-sectional sample across six decades of ages provides a means to generate hypotheses about lifespan trajectories in brain phenotypes. Abstract

Behavioral research has revealed deficits in the development of joint attention (JA) as one of the earliest signs of autism. While the neural basis of JA has been studied predominantly in adults, we recently demonstrated a protracted development of the brain networks supporting JA in typically developing children and adolescents. The present eye-tracking/fMRI study now extends these findings to adolescents with autism. Our results show that in adolescents with autism JA is subserved by abnormal activation patterns in brain areas related to social cognition abnormalities which are at the core of ASD including the STS and TPJ, despite behavioral maturation with no behavioral differences. Furthermore, in the autism group we observed increased neural activity in a network of social and emotional processing areas during interactions with their mother. Moreover, data indicated that less severely affected individuals with autism showed higher frontal activation associated with self-initiated interactions. Taken together, this study provides first-time data of JA in children/adolescents with autism incorporating the interactive character of JA, its reciprocity and motivational aspects. Abstract

The genetic architecture of autism spectrum disorder involves the interplay of common and rare variants and their impact on hundreds of genes. Using exome sequencing, here we show that analysis of rare coding variation in 3,871 autism cases and 9,937 ancestry-matched or parental controls implicates 22 autosomal genes at a false discovery rate (FDR) < 0.05, plus a set of 107 autosomal genes strongly enriched for those likely to affect risk (FDR < 0.30). These 107 genes, which show unusual evolutionary constraint against mutations, incur de novo loss-of-function mutations in over 5% of autistic subjects. Many of the genes implicated encode proteins for synaptic formation, transcriptional regulation and chromatin-remodelling pathways. These include voltage-gated ion channels regulating the propagation of action potentials, pacemaking and excitability-transcription coupling, as well as histone-modifying enzymes and chromatin remodellers-most prominently those that mediate post-translational lysine methylation/demethylation modifications of histones.

Abstract

Was kann es heißen, ein gutes Leben zu führen? Der vorliegende Sammelband beschäftigt sich mit dieser Frage interdisziplinär aus philosophischer und theologischer Perspektive und versammelt national wie international renommierte Experten zum Thema. Die Beiträge spiegeln den aktuellen Forschung wider. Das Buch eignet sich auch als Einführung und für einen Überblick über die in diesem Bereich diskutierten Probleme. Der Sammelband verfolgt zwei Ziele: Zum einen sollen die neuesten Entwicklungen innerhalb der philosophischen Debatte angemessen abgebildet und weiter reflektiert werden; zum anderen soll die Debatte durch die kreative Konfrontation philosophischer Ansätze mit theologischen Fragestellungen um reizvolle Aspekte erweitert werden. Dabei wird erstens die metaethische Dimension des Themas behandelt. Diese umfasst z.B. die Kontroverse um Objektivität und Subjektivität einer Theorie des guten Lebens sowie die Klärung dessen, was unter der Frage nach dem guten Leben überhaupt zu verstehen ist. Zweitens wird die normativ-ethische Dimension des Themas beleuchtet. Hier geht es um die inhaltliche Bestimmung eines guten Lebens sowie das Verhältnis von gutem Leben und Moral. Drittens schließlich sind einige Texte der theologischen Dimension des Themas gewidmet. In ihr wird nach den Perspektiven gefragt, welche die Bezugnahme auf Transzendenz für die Frage nach dem guten Leben eröffnet. Abstract

Plasmas in electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (ECRIS) are collisionless and can therefore be simulated by only following the motion of electrons in the confining static magnetic and oscillating microwave field of ECRIS. The experimental performance of three different ECRIS is successfully compared to calculated spatial electron (plasma) and electron energy density as well as to the energy spectrum and the average energy of the electrons. Further simulations suggest a new and better design of an ECRIS, the good experimental performance of which corresponds to the predictions.
