Abstract

The Large Volume Detector (LVD) in the Gran Sasso underground Laboratory is a multipurpose detector consisting of a large volume of liquid scintillator interleaved with limited streamer tubes. In this paper we discuss its power to study low-energy cosmic neutrinos. The results show that the first LVD tower (368 tons of liquid scintillator) is well suited to detect neutrinos from gravitational stellar collapses within all of our Galaxy over a wide range of burst duration (up to a few hundred seconds). No burst candidates have been observed in the first two months of data taking.

Abstract

We report on the simulated performances of a non-homogeneous e.m. calorimeter based on a 5X0 tracking section using Csl(Tl) fibres, followed by a 10X0 Pb-SCIFI head-on back section. Our study shows that such a technique is quite promising for the high-efficiency detection of photons in the energy range of interest at a Φ-factory machine.

Abstract

This article reports on studies aimed to characterise the properties of plastic scintillating fibres to be used in head-on, 1:1 Pb-SCIFI calorimetric modules. The effect of glue on the attenuation of the light transported by cladding close to the photomultiplier tube is studied and found to effectively decrease the contribution of cladding light. Pb-SCIFI modules have been assembled and tested on a 20–80 MeV tagged photon beam. Good linearity and energy resolution better than 6% / √ E [GeV] were achieved, therefore showing that this technique is suitable for experimentation at ⊼-factories.

Abstract

The production of open charm has been studied in proton-proton interactions at $$\sqrt s = 62GeV$$ . We report on the observation of the charmed baryon $$\Lambda _c^ + $$ , in coincidence with an electron from the associated anticharm decay, via the reaction $$p + p \to e^ - + \Lambda _c^ + + X$$ , in the kinematical region defined by |x F|≅0 andp t>0.5 GeV/c for the e−, and |x F|>0.35 for the $$\Lambda _c^ + $$ . The longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of the $$\Lambda _c^ + $$ have been derived. The cross-section for $$\bar D\Lambda _c^ + $$ associated production has been estimated extrapolating to the full phase space the observed production distributions. The suppression factor with respect to $$\Lambda _s^0 $$ production, at ISR energies, turns out to be about 1/50 in the high-|x F| range. The results confirm that the «leading» particle effect dominates baryon production in proton-proton interactions.

Abstract

Expected rates of deep-underground muons in the LVD detector, at a vertical depth of 3600 hg/cm 2 s.r. (standard rock) at the Gran Sasso, were obtained through Monte Carlo simulation. Two different generators were developed to reproduce single and multiple muon distributions at our detector level. The main purpose was to evaluate the potentiality of the apparatus in studying chemical composition and energy spectra of primary cosmic rays in the range 10 14 –10 16 eV through the detection of muon bundles of high multiplicity. Sensitivity of the detector was checked by comparing event-rate predictions for three different models of the primary composition: the Maryland spectrum, the “low energy composition” model, and the NUSEX parametrization (with spectral index of iron γ Fe = 2.60 and 2.70). We predict a single muon rate in the apparatus of about 3.26×10 6 events/year. Preliminary results for multiple muon-event detection show that we can separate with a good sensitivity different primary compositions in the multiplicity region around n = 10.

Abstract

A fully compensating uranium—scintillator calorimeter was constructed for the ZEUS detector at HERA. Several of the barrel calorimeter modules were subjected to beam tests at Fermilab before shipping them to DESY for installation. The calibrations of the modules used beams of electrons and hadrons, measuring the uniformity of the response, and checking the resolution. The runs also provided opportunity to test a large fraction of the actual ZEUS calorimeter readout system in an integrated beam environment more than one year before HERA turn on. The experiment utilized two computer controlled mechanical structures, one of which was capable of holding up to four modules in order to study shower containment, and a magnetic spectrometer with a high resolution beam tracking system. During two running periods, beams of 6 to 110 GeV containing e, μ, π, and p were used. The results show energy resolutions of 35%/ E for hadrons and 19%/ E for electrons, uniformities at the 1% level, energy nonlinearity less than 1%, and equal response for electrons and hadrons.

Abstract

This paper deals with the parallelization of one of the most popular threedimensional oceanographic model: the Princeton Oceean Model (POM). The parallelization is achieved using standard tools like MPI and OpenMP, to ensure portability of the code. A robust and ecien t domain decomposition method is used to solve, in principle, large scale examples on clusters of shared memory machines. A comparison between the pure MPI and the hybrid MPI+OpenMP is shown in terms of elapsed time for a standard seamount problem.

With the emergence of micro and nanosatellites, work has also started on chemical microthrusters (e.g., deGroot and Oleson, 1996; Beardsley, 1999; Alexchenko et al., 2000). This work is motivated by the fact that simple (“geometric”) size reduction of chemical thrusters for micro and nanosatellites indicates that thrust T=CFPCAt (from ideal 1-D rocket theory) scales with throat area ~ L, while weight W scales with volume ~ L. Thus, shrinking a chemical rocket should raise the T/W ratio, a very attractive trend. However, scaling laws should be considered for all physical effects; in this regard Ketsdever and Mueller (1999) and Ketsdever et al. (1999) have examined the effects of viscosity and heat transfer. Effects associated with rocket combustion have not been examined so far. The goal of this paper is to show how the effects of miniaturizing rocket engines can be estimated in advance, thus avoiding (costly) disappointment. In particular, the attention is focused on combustion physics, i.e., quenching, flame thickness and turbulence length scales. The results show intrinsic limitations to miniaturizing rocket engines posed by combustion physics, as well as the opportunities it provides: for instance, in taking advantage of unwanted effects (e.g., wall heat transfer) to increase operability and performance.

This is a progress report on the multiple muon events recorded by the first tower of the LVD detector at the Gran Sasso Laboratory. About 17,000 multiple muon events have been observed since the LVD first tower started operation in June 1992. Presented here are the measured multiplicity distribution and separation distribution of muon pairs in the bundles.

Abstract

The first angular distribution data from 5547 hours of operation of the LVD detector are presented. The technique of track reconstruction is described. A total of 452 657 single muons were reconstructed for this period. The data are acceptance corrected in our final plots. The total single muon flux (the total flux from above impinging on a sphere of unit cross sectional area) in the Gran Sasso Laboratory is 1.03 muons per hour per square meter. The total flux crossing a unit horizontal area from above is 0.79 muons per hour per square meter. The acceptance-corrected intensity at cos θ = 1 is 0.349 muons per hour per square meter per steradian (9.7× l0 − 9 muons per second per square centimeter per steradian). We present, for the first time from Gran Sasso Laboratory, data at near-horizontal zenith angles.

Abstract

In this work we report the complete set of measurements carried out at LADON on small size calorimeter modules composed of a uniform array of plastic scintillating fibers and lead (50:35 by volume ratio) for photons in the energy range 20-80 MeV. Calorimeter properties for both head-on and side-on incidence conditions have been investigated. With photons hitting the fibers laterally, an energy resolution of 4.8%/\\sqrt{E[GeV]} is obtained. This figure includes a 2%/\\sqrt{E[GeV]} term added in quadrature due to the photoelectron statistics.

Abstract

This paper presents our first measurement of the F 2 structure function in neutral-current, deep inelastic scattering using the ZEUS detector at HERA, the ep colliding beam facility at DESY. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 24.7 nb −1 . Results are presented for data in range of Q 2 from 10 GeV 2 to 4700 GeV 2 and Bjorken x down to 3.0 × 10 −4 . The F 2 structure function increases rapidly as x decreases.

Abstract

This paper reports a search for excited electrons at the HERA electron-proton collider. In a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 26 nb−, no evidence was found for any resonant state decaying into e−γ, νW− or e−Z0. Limits on the coupling strength of an excited electron have been determined for masses between 45 and 225 GeV. This study also reports the observation of the wide-angle eγ Compton scattering process.

Abstract

The Large Volume Detector (LVD) in the Gran Sasso underground Laboratory is a multipurpose detector consisting of a large volume of liquid scintillator interleaved with limited streamer tubes. In this paper we discuss its power to study low energy cosmic neutrinos. The results show that the first LVD tower (368 tons of liquid scintillator) is well suited to detect neutrinos from gravitational stellar collapses within all of our Galaxy over a wide range of burst duration (up to a few hundred seconds). No burst candidates have been observed in the first two months of data taking.

Abstract

We report on the simulated performances of a non-homogeneous e.m. calorimeter based on a 5X_0 tracking section using CsI(Tl) fibres, followed by a 10 X_0 Pb-SCIFI head-on back section. Our study shows that such a technique is quite promising for the high-efficency detection of photons in the energy range of interest at a ϕ-factory machine.

Abstract

This article reports on studies aimed to characterise the properties of plastic scintillating fibres to be used in head-on, 1:1 Pb-SCIFI calorimetric modules. The effect of glue on the attenuation of the light transported by cladding close to the photomultiplier tube is studied and found to effectively decrease the contribution of cladding light. Pb-SCIFI modules have been assembled and tested on a 20-80 MeV tagged photon beam. Good linearity and energy resolution better than 6%/ \\sqrt{E[GeV]} were achieved, therefore showing that this technique is suitable for experimentation at \ϕ-factories.

Abstract

In this paper the physical performances of a calorimeter composed of a highly segmented tracking section (5X_0) that uses CsI(TI) elements, followed by a total absorption 10X_0 Pb-scintillating fiber segment, are compaired with those of a more conventional Pb-scintillating fiber detector. The γ energy range covered by these detectors is (20 - 300)MeV, as requested by the experimentation at e^+e^- ϕ factory machines.

Abstract

Abstract

Another decay mode of the Λ b 0 (open-beauty baryon) state has been observed: Λ b 0 →Λ c + π+π−π−. In addition, new results on the previously observed decay channel, Λ b 0 →pD0π−, are reported. These results confirm our previous findings on Λ b 0 production at the ISR. The mass value (5.6 GeV/c2) is found to be in good agreement with theoretical predictions. The production mechanism is found to be «leading».

Abstract

The tracking system of the Large Volume Detector, an underground experiment to study muons and nutrino astronomy, will use −15000 limited streamer chambers. We describe a comparison between the standard binary mixture (30% argon + 70% isobutane) and a low-hydrocarbon ternary mixture (2% argon + 10% isobutane + 88% carbon dioxide). The ternary composition results in a 400-volt-shorter single count-rate plateau, a 20% smaller primary streamer pulse-height, and a much higher streamer multiplicity. The count-rate plateaux have also been studied over a wide composition range of isobutane, argon, and carbon dioxide mixtures. We also discuss the streamer chamber quality control procedures and the results obtained from a simple of 2900 devices operated with the binary mixture.

Abstract

In order to perform an indoor survey of internal exposure to radon and its short life daughters using track etching passive detectors, it is necessary to analyze a large amount of information without spending a lot of time and manual work. For this purpose, the possibility of utilizing PEPR (Precision Encoding and Pattern Recognition) normally used in the digitization of low energy particle tracks recorded on Bubble Chamber film has been studied. A special subroutine has been set up for a PDP 11/45 Computer to guide PEPR in studying the tracks of α-particles in CR39.

Abstract

The Precision Encoding and Pattern Recognition (PEPR) was tested in order to analyze radon α-particle tracks in CR39. The system operates on photographic films of the tracks, measuring optical densities. Three different algorithms of acquisition and measurement of the tracks were set up. With this technique pieces of CR39 exposed in passive diffusion dosemeters to different radon concentrations were studied. The calibration obtained was compared with that carried out with optical microscope counting.

Abstract

We describe here the LVD experiment (Large-Volume Detector) of the Gran Sasso Laboratory, which is the natural improvement of the LSD experiment (Liquid Scintillation Detector) running in the Mont Blanc Laboratory. The LVD ((31×13) m2 area, height 12 m) consists of ≈1800 tons of liquid scintillator and of a system of streamer tubes on 5 layers for reconstructing tracks of charged particles. As any experiment in an underground laboratory, which has a low statistics of events and requires long running times, the LVD is a multipurpose experiment but with different priorities of the researches. The main goal is neutrino astronomy, firstly detection of neutrinos from collapsing stars and secondly high-energy neutrinos and solar neutrinos. Since the expected number of interactions of neutrinos, from a stellar collapse is very high (of order of 900 for a collapse at the distance of the galactic centre), the LVD is, contrary to the present experiments, a real neutrino observatory, able to make a detailed analysis of the energy and temporal distributions of the burst. In addition to neutrino astrophysics, with the LVD experiment excellent possibilities exist to perform researches in cosmic-ray and high-energy elementary-particle physics.

Abstract

LVD is a large volume detector which will be installed in Hall A of the Gran Sasso Laboratory. This detector is 49 m long, 13.2 m high and 12 m wide. It contains 2280 m3 of scintillator (1800 t) and 1800 t of steel. The geometric acceptance of LVD for an isotropic flux of particles is greater than 7000 m2 sr. LVD is the ideal detector for detecting a stellar collapse, anywhere in our galaxy; for studying neutrino oscillations; for searching for the supersymmetric decay mode of the proton; and for looking at the boron neutrinos from the sun. LVD is a very competitive detector for detecting astrophysical neutrino emitting point sources, for performing dark matter searches, for studying single muon distributions, for detecting muon bundles and hence determining the primary cosmic ray composition, and for searching for massive monopoles and other ultra heavy particles. LVD is composed of 190 identical modules, of which the first 10% of these modules will installed in 1987.

Abstract

The large-volume detector (LVD) which will be installed in Hall A of the Gran Sasso Laboratory can be defined as an underground observatory devoted to neutrino astronomy and to the measurement of the penetrating components of cosmic rays. The detector consists of two major parts: the tracking system and the scintillator system. It is specifically designed to permit a multipurpose experiment allowing the detection of neutrino interaction inside the detector and the detection of omnidirectional mu-mesons and the measurement of their trajectories and direction of flight.

38. Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia with conization: early complications and follow-up

Abstract

The authors made a review of the last 100 cases who underwent a conization of the cervix during the period 1980-1986. Cyto-histological evaluation was compatible in 78% of the cases with a cervical intraepithelial neoplasia of third degree and in 22% with a CIN of first and second degree. Early post-operative complications consisted of a hemorrhage in 3% of the cases, easily stopped with a vaginal packing. In 2% of the cases a risuture under general anaesthesia was required. In 1 case the stitches loosened and in another a urinary infection was present. Twenty-six patients underwent total hysterectomy after conization for different indications; only one patient had a relapse after six months as there was a moderate dysplasia localized in the vaginal vault. During the follow-up, 14 patient became pregnant. Among these, 5 underwent legal termination during the first trimester and 9 delivered at term without any complication. During these follow-up of 7 years in the older cases and 6 months in the more recent ones, 6 cases displayed a persistence of the disease after 3 months, (CIN of variable degree) and 2 cases relapsed at the second colpocytological control. These patients, according to the age and the presence of clinical indications, underwent total hysterectomy or diathermic coagulation with resolution of the disease. A relapsing invasive tumor was never observed.)

Abstract

Langerhans cells (LCs) were shown up in normal cervical tissue obtained from 32 women whose age ranged from 25 to 68 years, using immunohistological methods. LCs were detected in metaplastic and native squamous epithelium of the cervix; they were positive to Dako-LC and OKDR antibodies and those located in the basal-suprabasal epithelial layers were also OKT6-positive. The density of the LCs was higher during the proliferative phase of the menstrual cycle. The investigation into the lymphocytes present in the stroma and in the squamous epithelium showed a population of T-lymphocytes identified as predominantly T-cytotoxic/suppressor cells, sometimes in contact with LCs. The significance of these findings is discussed.

Abstract

The Authors have carried out a cyto-hystologic study on 533 cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CIN) devoted to identifying the association frequency between cervical dysplastic lesions and cervico-vaginal infections caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, Chlamydia Trachomatis, Herpes Simplex virus and Human Papilloma virus. HPV lesions have revealed the pathology found more frequently in CIN lesions (33.2%) compared to 0.19% in the normal population, while the other infections have not shown significant differences between dysplastic lesions and normal control. In patients with CIN, the assumption of the estro-progestinic pill does not seem to contribute to the increase of frequency of cervico-vaginal infections.
