1. The Electronics of the H1 Lead/Scintillating-Fibre Calorimeters

Abstract: The electronic system developed for the SpaCal lead/scintillating-fibre calorimeters of the H1 detector in operation at the HERA ep collider is described in detail and the performance achieved during H1 data-taking is presented. The 10 MHz bunch crossing rate of HERA puts severe constraints on the requirements of the electronics. The energy and time readout are performed respectively with a 14-bit dynamic range and with a resolution of about 0.4 ns. The trigger branch consists of a nanosecond-resolution calorimetric time-of-flight for background rejection and an electron trigger based on analog `sliding windows'. The on-line background rejection currently achieved is o(10**6). The electron trigger allows a low energy trigger threshold to be set at about 0.50 +/- 0.08 (RMS) GeV with an efficiency >99.9%. The energy and time performance of the readout and trigger electronics is based on a newly-developed low noise (sigma_noise ca. 0.4 MeV) wideband (f < 200 MHz) preamplifier located at the output of the photomultipliers which are used for the fibre light readout in the ca. 1 Tesla magnetic field of H1., Comment: 25 pages (LaTeX), 13 figures (PostScript)

Abstract: The new lead/scintillating-fibre calorimeter (“SpaCal”) for the backward region of the H1 experiment at HERA (DESY) is equipped with fine mesh phototubes which operate in a magnetic field close to 1 T. A large sample of these tubes of the types Hamamatsu R5505 and R5506, and Hamamatsu R2490-05, have been tested in fields of up to 1.2T. We have investigated the cathode homogeneity with and without magnetic field, the gain loss under the influence of the magnetic field, and stability with time. For a subsample of tubes, we have performed additional studies on stability with respect to temperature changes, variation of gain as a function of the magnetic field, high voltage discharges, single photo-electron response, and linearity. We finally summarize the experience with these tubes after one year of operation in the experiment.

Abstract: The backward region of the H1 detector has been upgraded in order to provide improved measurement of the scattered electron in deep inelastic scattering events. The centerpiece of the upgrade is a high-resolution lead/scintillating-fibre calorimeter. The main design goals of the calorimeter are: good coverage of the region close to the beam pipe, high angular resolution and energy resolution of better than 2% for 30 GeV electrons. The calorimeter should be capable of providing coarse hadronic energy measurement and precise time information to suppress out-of-time background events at the first trigger level. It must be compact due to space restrictions. These requirements were fulfilled by constructing two separate calorimeter sections. The inner electromagnetic section is made of 0.5 mm scintillating plastic fibres embedded in a lead matrix. Its lead-to-fibre ratio is 2.3:1 by volume. The outer hadronic section consists of 1.0 mm diameter fibres with a lead-to-fibre ratio of 3.4:1. The mechanical construction of the new calorimeter and its assembly in the H1 detector are described.

Abstract: Hadronic response and electron identification performance of the new H1 lead-scintillating fibre calorimeter are investigated in the 1 to 7 GeV energy range using data taken at the CERN Proton Synchrotron. The energy response to minimum ionizing particles and interacting pions are studied and compared to Monte Carlo simulations. The measured energy of pions interacting either in the electromagnetic or in the hadronic section is found to scale linearly with the incident energy, providing an energy resolution σ E ∼ 38% within a depth of one interaction length and σ E ∼ 29% for a total depth of two interaction lengths. Several electron identification estimators are studied and combined as a function of energy and impact point. The probability for pions to be misidentified as electrons of any measured energy above 1 GeV ranges from 5% (for 2 GeV incident pions) to 0.4% (at 7 GeV) for an electron detection efficiency of 90%. The probability for pions of a given energy to be misidentified as electrons of the same energy falls to 0.25% at 7 GeV.

Abstract: At the electron-proton collider HERA the inclusive D-*+/- meson photoproduction cross section has been measured with the H1 detector in two different, but partly overlapping, kinematical regions. For the first, where [W-gamma p] approximate to 200 GeV and Q(2) < 0.01 GeV2, the result is sigma(gamma p --> c(c) over barX$) = (13.2 +/- 2.2(-1.7-4.8)(+2.1+9.9)) mu b. The second measurement for Q(2) < 4 GeV2 yields sigma(gamma p) --> c(c) over barX$) = (9.3 +/- 2.1(-1.8-3.2)(+1.9+6.9)) mu b at [W-gamma p] approximate to 142 GeV and sigma(gamma p --> c(c) over barX$) = (20.6 +/- 5.5(-3.9-7.2)(+4.3+15.4)) mu b at [W-gamma p] approximate to 230 GeV, respectively. The third error accounts for an additional uncertainty due to the proton and photon parton density parametrizations. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the D-*+/- transverse momentum and rapidity. The results compare reasonably well with next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Evidence for diffractive photoproduction of charm quarks is presented.

Abstract: The properties of final modules of a high resolution lead/scintillating-fibre calorimeter to upgrade the backward region of the H1 detector were studied with electrons in the energy range from 2–60 GeV. The electromagnetic calorimeter consists of scintillating fibres with a diameter of 0.5 mm embedded in a lead matrix. This small fibre radius, in combination with a lead-to-fibre ratio of 2.27:1, ensures excellent energy resolution which has been measured to be δ/E=7.1%/ E/GeV ⊕ 1.0% . The spatial resolution as a function of energy for impact points at the center of a cell is given by 4.4 mm/ E/GeV + 1.0 mm . The time resolution was found to be better than 0.4 ns.

Abstract: The total cross sections for the elastic electroproduction of $\rh0$ and $J/\Psi$ mesons for $Q^2$ $>$ 8 GeV$^2$ and $ \simeq 90$ GeV/c$^2$ are measured at HERA with the H1 detector. The measurements are for an integrated electron$-$proton luminosity of $\simeq$~3~pb$^{-1}$. The dependences of the total virtual photon$-$proton ($\gamma^* p$) cross sections on $Q^2$, $W$ and the momentum transfer squared to the proton ($t$), and, for the $\rho$, the dependence on the polar decay angle ($\cos \theta^*$), are presented. The $J/\Psi$ : $\rh0$ cross section ratio is determined. The results are discussed in the light of theoretical models and of the interplay of hard and soft physics processes.

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the total photoproduction cross section performed with the H1 detector at HERA. For an average centre of mass energy of 200 GeV a value of σtotλp=165±2±11µb has been obtained. A detailed analysis of the data in adequate kinematic regions enabled a decomposition of the total cross section in its elastic, single diffractive dissociation and remaining non-diffractive parts, based on safe assumptions on the double diffractive dissociation contribution.

Abstract: A search for direct production of new leptons in the mass range from 10 GeV up to 225 GeV is presented by the H1 experiment at HERA. The data were obtained during 1993 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 528 nb −1 . The search includes heavy lepton decays to final states e ( ν ) γ and e ( ν ) W , e ( ν ) Z with the subsequent decay of the W and Z bosons into jets or lepton pairs. No evidence was found for the production of new massive electrons or neutrinos in any of the decay channels. Rejection limits for excited electrons and neutrinos are derived.

Abstract: The performance of mesh-type photomultipliers with a diameter of 1 in., 1.5 in. and 2 in. respectively has been measured in magnetic fields for different angles between the field direction and the axis of the photomultiplier. Moreover the response was determined for light incident at different places of the cathode. In addition we have developed a model which describes the shape of the measured gain distributions.

Abstract: The properties of four PbF2 crystals of size 21 × 21 × 175 mm3 were studied with electron and pion beams in the energy range from 1 to 6 GeV. An energy resolution for electrons of 6.3%/√E/GeV was achieved with a 2 × 2 matrix of four PbF2 crystals, which corresponds to 5.6%/√E/GeV when corrected for lateral leakage by Monte Carlo simulations. The deviation from linearity was smaller than 0.5%. The time resolution was found to be better than 0.6 ns. We studied also optical properties, radiation hardness, position resolution and spatial homogeneity. An efficient separation of electromagnetic and hadronic showers was achieved.

Abstract: Cross sections are presented for the inclusive production of charged particles measured in electron-proton collisions at low Q 2 with the H1 detector at HERA. The transverse momentum distribution extends up to 8 GeV/ c . Its shape is found to be harder than that observed in p p collisions at comparable centre-of-mass energies √S γp ≈ √S p p ≈ 200 GeV , and also harder than in γp collisions at lower energies √ S γp ≈ 18 GeV. Results from quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations agree with the measured transverse momentum and pseudorapidity cross sections.

Abstract: An analysis is presented of scaling violations of the proton structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) measured with the H1 detector at HERA in the range of Bjorken x values between x = 3 × 10 −4 and 10 −2 for four-momentum transfers Q > 2 larger than 8.7 GeV 2 . The structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) is observed to rise linearly with ln Q 2 . Under the assumption that the observed scaling violations at small x ⩽ 0.01 are described correctly by perturbative QCD, an estimate is obtained of the gluon distribution function G ( x , Q 0 2 ) at Q 2 2 = 20 GeV 2 .

Abstract: Exclusive semileptonicB decays with aD *+ meson in the final state have been studied using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring. The branching ratio for the decay $$\bar B^0 \to D^{* + } \ell ^ - \bar v$$ , where l- is eithere − or μ-, has been measured to be (5.2±0.5±0.6)%. A significant rate for the decay $$\bar B \to D^{**} \ell ^ - \bar v$$ has been observed. From an angular analysis of the cascade $$\bar B^0 \to D^{* + } ( \to D^0 \pi ^ + )\ell ^ - \bar v$$ the forward-backward asymmetryA FB and theD *+ polarization parameter α have been determined to beA FB=0.20±0.08±0.06 and α=1.1±0.4±0.2.

Abstract: A measurement of the proton structure function F2 (x, Q2) is presented with about 1000 neutral current deep inelastic scattering events for Bjorken x in the range x ⋍ 10−2 – 10−4 and Q2 > 5 GeV2. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity of 22.5 nb−1 recorded by the H1 detector in the first year of HERA operation. The structure function F2 (x, Q2) shows a significant rise with decreasing x.

Abstract: Inclusive jet cross sections are measured in photoproduction at HERA using the H1 detector. The data sample of e+ p -> e+ + jet + X events in the kinematic range of photon virtualities Q^2 < 1 GeV^2 and photon-proton centre-of-mass energies 95 < W_gammap < 285 GeV represents an integrated luminosity of 24.1 pb^-1. Jets are defined using the inclusive k_T algorithm. Single- and multi-differential cross sections are measured as functions of jet transverse energy E_T^jet and pseudorapidity ��^jet in the domain 5 < E_T^jet < 75 GeV and -1 < ��^jet < 2.5. The cross sections are found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations corrected for fragmentation and underlying event effects. The cross section differential in E_T^jet, which varies by six orders of magnitude over the measured range, is compared with similar distributions from p pbar colliders at equal and higher energies., 34 pages, 9 figures and 7 tables

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS-II electron-positron storage ring at DESY, we have investigated the exclusive decay D ∗+ → D 0 π + , D 0 → K S 0 π + π − . From a partial wave analysis of the KS0π+π− system we find that (71.8± 4.2 ± 3.0)% are D 0 → K ∗− π + and (22.7 ± 3.2 ± 0.9)% are D 0 → K 0 ϱ 0 with a relative phase of (−137 ± 7 ± 3)° between the channels. The remaining fraction can be described by several channels involving excited resonances, but not by a three-body phase space decay, thus giving first evidence for D0 decays into K 0 ∗ (1430) − π + , K 0 f 0 (1975), K 0 f 2 (1270) , and K 0 f 0 (1400) .

Abstract: The inclusive production cross sections of η′ (958) andf o (975) mesons are measured ine + e − annihilation in the nonresonant continuum around $$\sqrt s = 10$$ GeV and in decays of the υ resonances using the ARGUS detector. For η′ (958) mesons, a production ratio of η′ (958)/ηdir=0.35±0.24, with ηdir=η−BR(η′→ηX)·η′, is determined in direct υ(1S) decays, which can be partially explained by the pseudoscalar singlet/octet mixing. Forf o (975) production, we obtain a production ratio off o (975)/p(770)°=0.17±0.030 in direct υ(1S) decays. In its production features, thef o (975) behaves like an ordinary meson, though aK $$\bar K$$ molecule nature cannot be excluded. The substantial production yield of thef o (975) meson demonstrates the important effect of feeddown from mesons beyond the basic multiples on pseudoscalar and vector meson production.

Abstract: Using the detector ARGUS at thee + e − storage ring DORIS II, we have investigated inclusive momentum spectra of charged pions, kaons, and protons from decays of the υ(4S) meson. The kaon spectra have been measured in two independent ways, by coherently exploiting the detector's particle identification capabilities, and by detecting decays in-flight. The extracted mean multiplicities for charged hadrons are 7.17±0.05±0.14 pions, 1.56±0.03±0.05 kaons and 0.110±0.010±0.007 protons per υ(4S) decay, where pions and protons fromK and Δ decays have been subtracted.

Abstract: A direct search for new particles in the H1 experiment at HERA is presented for masses ranging from 35 GeV up to ∼ 250 GeV. The data sample of 24 nb −1 accumulated during the first year of operation was analysed for signatures of scalar and vector leptoquarks, leptogluons, excited electrons and excited neutrinos with flavours of the first generation. No evidence for the production of such particles was found in various possible decay channels. Rejection limits are derived.

Abstract: A search has been performed for rareB meson decays intoD − mesons arising fromb→u transitions,W exchange modes,B + annihilation processes, and decays where theD + is not produced via aW→c $$\bar s$$ quark pair coupling, using the ARGUS detector operating on the Ψ(4S) resonance at thee + e − storage ring DORIS II. Upper limits for individual decay modes are obtained. In addition, from a study ofD + l- correlations an upper limit of BR (B→D + l- X) (90% CL) is determined.

From about 7500 events we conclude that the three-pion system is dominated by theJ P=1+ resonancea 1 (1260) decaying preferentially via ρ0π-. Our data restrict a possible ρπ contribution of three-pion states without intermediate resonances to less than 6% at 95% CL. Fitting a model by Isgur et al. to the data yields $$m_{a_1 } = (1.211 \pm 0.007 \pm _{0.0}^{0.050} ) GeV/c^2 $$ and $$\Gamma _{a_1 } = (0.446 \pm 0.0021 \pm _{0.0}^{0.140} ) GeV/c^2 $$ . The second errors reflect the model dependence of the result. This is the currently most significant determination of thea 1 resonance parameters. The ratio ofS- andD-wave amplitudes for the ρ0π- intermediate state of thea 1 − decay at the nominala 1 − mass was found to beD/S=−0.11±0.02. Using thisD/S ratio we update our former measurement of the parity violating asymmetry parameter $$\gamma _{AV} = 2g_A g_V /(g_A^2 + g_V^2 )$$ to 1.25±0.23± 0.08 0.15 . The branching ratio of the decay τ- → π-π-π+ v τ is determined to be Br(τ- → π-π-π+ v τ)=(6.8±0.1±0.5)%.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e - storage ring using DORIS II at DESY, we have observed a new decay channel for the excited charm-strange meson D s1 (2536) + →D∗ O K + . The production cross section for the D s 1 (2536) + decaying via this channel is measured to be σ ( D s1 (2536) + )· BR (D sl (2536) + →D∗ 0 K + )= 18±4±3 pb at E CM = 10.4 GeV. The mass of the D s 1 (2536) + is found to be 2535.2 ± 0.5±1.5 MeV/ c 2 in agreement with the value obtained from an analysis of the D s1 (2536) + →D∗ + K 0 s decay channel. The natural width is determined to be less than 3.9 MeV/ c 2 at 90%CL.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring, a new measurement of the mass of the τ lepton has been obtained. An analysis of the tau pseudomass spectrum for decays of the type τ− → π−π−π+ντ finds mτ = 1776.3±2.4±1.4 MeV/c2. This result also leads to an improvement of the upper limit on the ντ mass to mντ < 31 MeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring, we have studied τ decays with one or three charged particles in the final state, obtaining the following values for the branching ratios: BR(τ−→e − $$\bar v_e v_\tau $$ )=(17.3±0.4±0.5)% BR(τ−→μ− $$\bar v_\mu v_\tau $$ )=(17.2±0.4±0.5)%,BR(τ−→π− v π)+BR(τ−→K − v π)=(11.7±0.6±0.8)% and BR(π−→3-prong)=(13.3±0.3±0.8)%. These measurements confirm the present world averages with a precision, in each case, comparable to the error on the combination of all previous results.

Abstract: An analysis of the decay τ-→π-π0vτ has been performed using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring. The branching ratio has been determined to be Br(τ-→π-π0vτ=(22.6±0.4±0.9)%. The shape of the π-π0 invariant mass spectrum is found to be in good agreement with the predictions obtained using the conserved vector current (CVC) hypothesis, suggesting that the π-π0 system is produced in aJP=1− state. An analysis of the measured decay angular distribution of the pions with respect to the flight direction of the π-π0 system demonstrates the vector nature of the coupling at the τvτ vertex. With the assumption of zerovτ mass thevτ spin has been shown to be$J_{v_\tau}= \tfrac{1}{2} $.

These decays are found to proceed mostly via the $$\bar K*^0 K*^ + $$ decay channel, with BR(D +→ $$\bar K*^0 K*^ + $$ )=2.6±0.8±0.7)% and BR(D + → $$\bar K*^0 K*^ + $$ )/BR(D + →φπ+)=1.5±0.4±0.4.

Abstract: Upper limits on branching ratios for six neutrinoless leptonic, 16 semileptonic, two radiative-leptonic, two radiative-hadronic and three purely hadronic τ decays have been determined. The results improve over previously published ones by about a factor of two. For the first time the lepton and baryon number violating decays$\tau ^ - \to \bar p\gamma ,\tau ^ - \to \bar p\pi ^0 $ and$\tau ^ - \to \bar p\eta $ have been investigated. The 90% confidence level (CL) limits for the corresponding branching ratios amount to 2.9×10−4, 6.6×10−4 and 1.3×10−3 respectively.

Abstract: We have measured theR value in non-resonante+e− annihilation using the ARGUS detector at the storage ring DORIS II. At a centre-of-mass energy$\sqrt s = 9.36$ GeV the ratio of the hadronic cross-section to the μ-pair cross section in lowest order QED has been determined to beR=3.46±0.03±0.13. In addition, we have measured the charged-particle multiplicities in non-resonant hadron production at$\sqrt s = 10.47$ GeV just below theB$\bar B$ threshold and in ϒ (4S) resonance decays. For the average charged-particle multiplicities in continuum events and ϒ(4S)→B$\bar B$ decays we obtain cont=8.35±0.02±0.20 and ϒ(4s)=10.81±0.05±0.23.

Abstract: The production ofDS+ mesons inB meson decays, and inq$\bar q$ continuum events, has been studied with the ARGUS detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II. In addition to the measurement of inclusiveDS+ production in γ(4S)→B$\bar B$ decays, all eight two-body decay modesB→DS(*)D(*) have been measured with branching ratios between 1% and 3%. By comparing our inclusive and exclusive results to predictions of heavy quark effective theory, a value of (267±28) MeV × [2.7%/BR(Ds+→φπ+)]1/2 is obtained for the weak decay constant fDS(*), averaged overDS+ andDS*+ mesons.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have obtained the first evidence for B meson decays into χ c mesons. The inclusive branching ratio for the decay B → χ c X was measured to the (1.05±0.35±0.25)% assuming no χ c2 production. In addition, four candidates for the exclusive decay B ± → χ c1 K ± have been observed, corresponding to a branching ratio of (0.19 ± 0.13 ± 0.06)%.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY we have studied the decay B − → D ∗0 l − λ , where l − = e − or μ − , using the D 0 γ and D 0 π 0 decay modes of the D ∗0 meson. B mesons were produced in 209 000 decays of γ (4S). Assuming electron-muon universality, we obtain a value for the branching ratio of BR ( B − → D ∗0 l − λ )= (5.8 ± 1.4 ± 1.3)% .

Abstract: Direct observations of the semileptonic decay of Λc+ in the decay channels Λc+→Λe+X and Λc+→Λμ+X have been made using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e+e− storage ring. The cross section times branching ratio were found to be σ(e+e−→Λc+X)·BR(Λc+→Λe+X)=4.20±1.28±0.71 pb and σ(e+e−→Λc+X)·BR(Λc+→Λμ+X)=3.91±2.02±0.90 pb.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have measured the inclusive production ofD0,D+ andD*(2010)+ mesons inB decays and in nonresonante+e− annihilation around 10.6 GeV. The inclusive branching ratios forB decays toD0,D+ andD*+ mesons are found to be (52.2±8.2±3.5)%, (27.2±6.3±3.5)% and (34.8±6.0±3.5)% respectively. Thus,D0 andD+ production account for about 70% of the charm produced inB decays, neglectingb→u contributions to the total width. The production cross sections and momentum spectra for continuume+e− annihilation are also presented.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, penguin decays of B mesons involving b→sX + X − have been searched for, where X is one of e, μ , π , or K. No evidence for these decays was found and upoer limits are quoted. These numbers represent important constraints of flavour-changing neutral currents in B meson decays and probe the heavy-quark and Higgs sectors of the standard model.

Abstract: An analysis of the decay τ− → π−π−π+π0ντ has been performed with the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring. From a study of the two pion subsystems we have found first evidence for the decays τ− → ϱ0π−π0ντ, τ− → ϱ −π+π−ντ, and τ− → ϱ+π−π−ντ with relative contributions to the decay τ− → π−π−π+π0ντ of 0.30 ± 0.04, 0.26 ± 0.05, and 0.10 ± 0.03, respectively. The fraction of the subchannel τ− → ωπ−ντ has been determined to be 0.33 ± 0.05. The production of ϱ mesons is enhanced by a factor of 1.9 ± 0.3 over that of ω mesons. We conclude that in more than 81% (95% CL) of all τ− → π−π−π+π0ντ decays either a ϱ or ω meson is produced.

Abstract: The reactionγγ→π+π−π+π− has been studied with the ARGUS detector. The rate in the invariant mass region below 1.8 GeV/c2 is found to be largely due toρ0ρ0 production. A spin-parity analysis shows a dominance of the partial wave (JP,Jz)=(2+, 2) with a small admixture fromJP=0+. The contribution of negative parity states is consistent with zero. The large ratio of cross sectionsσ(γγ→ρ0ρ0)/σ(γγ→ρ+ρ−)≃4, and the dominance of theJP=2+ wave in the reactionγγ→ρ0ρ0 is a signature consistent with the production of an exotic (I=2) resonance.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have studied semileptonic charmed meson decays through ф- and K ∗0 -electron correlations in continuum production. Evidence for the decay D − s →фe − v has been observed, with a branching ratio relative to the channel D − s →фπ − determined to be 0.57±0.15±0.15. The decay D − →K ∗0 e − v was also seen, with a value of 0.55±0.08±0.10 extracted for the branching ratio relative to the channel D − →K + π − π − . The ratio of the two measurements, after application of SU(3) corrections, implies a branching ratio for D − s →фπ − of (2.4±1.0)%.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+ e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY we have updated our result on charmless semileptonic B decays and searched for direct evidence for b→u transitions through reconstruction of complete events. This approach has successfully identified two ϒ (4S) events which contain B meson decays to a non-charm final state. In one case, a B0 meson is found in the channel π + μ − ν , while in the other a decay B+→ωμ+ν is seen. These events show that the previously observed signal of charmless semileptonic B decays is due to b→u transitions from which we obtain | V ub V cb | = 0.11±0.012 using the model of Altarelli et al.
