Background Mismatch negativity (MMN) amplitude is reduced in psychotic disorders and associated with symptoms and functioning. Due to these robust associations, it is often considered a biomarker for psychotic illness. The relationship between MMN and clinical outcomes has been examined well in early onset psychotic illness; however, its stability and predictive utility in chronic samples are not clear. Method We examined the five-year stability of MMN amplitude over two timepoints in individuals with established psychotic disorders (cases; N = 132) and never-psychotic participants (NP; N = 170), as well as longitudinal associations with clinical symptoms and functioning. Results MMN amplitude exhibited good temporal stability (cases, r = 0.53; never-psychotic, r = 0.52). In cases, structural equation models revealed MMN amplitude to be a significant predictor of worsening auditory hallucinations (β = 0.19), everyday functioning (β = −0.13), and illness severity (β = −0.12) at follow-up. Meanwhile, initial IQ (β = −0.24), negative symptoms (β = 0.23), and illness severity (β = −0.16) were significant predictors of worsening MMN amplitude five years later. Conclusions These results imply that MMN measures a neural deficit that is reasonably stable up to five years. Results support disordered cognition and negative symptoms as preceding reduced MMN, which then may operate as a mechanism driving reductions in everyday functioning and the worsening of auditory hallucinations in chronic psychotic disorders. This pattern may inform models of illness course, clarifying the relationships amongst biological mechanisms of predictive processing and clinical deficits in chronic psychosis and allowing us to better understand the mechanisms driving such impairments over time.

The loss of a spouse is often cited as the most traumatic event in a person’s life. However, for most people, the severity of grief and its maladaptive effects subside over time via an understudied adaptive process. Like humans, socially monogamous prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) form opposite-sex pair bonds, and upon partner separation, show behavioral and neuroendocrine stress phenotypes that diminish over time. Eventually, they can form a new bond, a key indicator of adapting to the loss of their partner. Thus, prairie voles provide an ethologically-relevant model for examining neuromolecular changes that emerge following partner separation for adapting to loss. Here, we test the hypothesis that extended partner separation diminishes pair bond-associated behaviors (partner preference and selective aggression) and causes pair bond transcriptional signatures to erode. Pairs were cohoused for 2 weeks and then either remained paired or were separated for 48hrs or 4wks before collecting fresh nucleus accumbens tissue for RNAseq. In a separate cohort, we assessed partner preference and selective aggression at these time points. Surprisingly, pair bond-associated behaviors persist despite prolonged separation and are similar between same-sex and opposite-sex paired voles. In contrast, we found that opposite-sex pair bonding, as compared with same-sex pairing, led to changes in accumbal transcription that were stably maintained as long as animals remained paired but eroded following prolonged partner separation. Eroded genes are primarily associated with gliogenesis and myelination, suggesting a previously undescribed role for glia in maintaining pair bonds and adapting to partner loss. We further reasoned that relevant neuronal transcriptional changes may have been masked by the prominent transcriptional signals associated with glia. Thus, we pioneered neuron-specific translating ribosomal affinity purification in voles. Neuronally-enriched transcriptional changes revealed dopaminergic-, mitochondrial-, and steroid hormone signaling-associated gene clusters whose expression patterns are sensitive to acute pair bond disruption and loss adaptation. Together, our results suggest that partner separation results in erosion of transcriptomic signatures of pair bonding despite core behavioral features of the bond remaining intact, revealing potential molecular processes central to priming a vole to be able to form a new bond.

The design, simulation, manufacture and measurement of a W-band five-fold (5F) helically corrugated waveguide (HCW) is reported. The 5F HCW is based on the coupling of the traveling TE31 and near cut-off TE22 modes to create an operating eigenwave. The fabricated test structure has circular waveguide ports and features elliptical polariser sections and broadband TE11 to TE31 mode converters on either side of the 5F HCW. The optimised mode converter design, based on a four-fold (4F) HCW, has a predicted power conversion efficiency greater than 90% from 89 to 102.5 GHz, and 96% peak efficiency at 94 GHz. The optimization of the 5F HCW geometry produced an eigenwave suitable for gyro-devices, but the optimization could equally well have been directed to applications such as pulse compression and microwave undulators. Analysis of simulated electric field profiles showed that the propagating power in the 5F HCW was increased by a factor of 6 over that in the 3F HCW at equivalent peak electric field strength. This is due to the larger diameter of the waveguide. Test structures were manufactured through a combination of precision machining of a sacrificial mandrel, copper growth by electroforming followed by removal of the aluminium mandrel by chemically etching. Measurements of the 5F HCW structure’s dispersion showed excellent agreement with the prediction over the design range of 90 to 98 GHz.

Fast aluminum-gallium-nitride–based metal–semiconductor–metal ultraviolet photodiodes were successfully designed, fabricated, and characterized using conventional photolithography techniques. Various electrode geometries were fabricated to investigate the influence of metal contact shapes on the device performance indices with emphasis on the response speed and bias-voltage–independent efficiency. Based on the independently measured Hall mobility and electric field, we evaluated the carrier transit time of the devices as 1.31 ps with bias-voltage–independent external quantum efficiency of 1198% in photoconductive mode at 19.5 V and 70% at 60 V for $n$ -doped and intrinsic devices, respectively.

In monogamous species, prosocial behaviors directed towards partners are dramatically different from those directed towards unknown individuals and potential threats. Dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens plays an important role in guiding social behavior, however, its role in real time social decision making in a monogamous species remains largely unknown. We used monogamous prairie voles to investigate how dopamine release differs in voles when seeking and interacting with a pair bonded partner or a novel vole. Employing the sub-second temporal resolution of the fluorescent biosensor, GRABDA, during a social operant task, we found that partner seeking, anticipation, and interaction resulted in more dopamine release than the same events directed towards a novel vole. Furthermore, partner-elicited dopamine release decreases after prolonged partner separation. Thus, differences in partner- and novel-elicited dopamine release reflect the selective nature of pair bonds and may drive the social behaviors that reinforce and cement bonds over time, eroding after partner loss to facilitate new bond formation.

Delusions are aberrant beliefs that are maintained in the face of conflicting evidence. Promising mechanistic frameworks are suggested by cognitive control theory which delineates detection and resolution stages of conflict processing and an augmented dual-process framework which proposes acquiescence to intuitive beliefs despite awareness that they conflict with rationality. We measured intuitive processes using one-shot decision-making and analytic processes using cognitive reflection (CRT) and Stroop tasks. Higher intuitive strength and lower CRT/Stroop conflict resolution was associated with increased acquiescence. Importantly, those less prone to delusions were more likely to override a strong irrational intuition as their analytic strength (on CRT and Stroop) increased; however, in those high on delusion-proneness, analytic strength predicted an increased likelihood of acquiescing to intuition. These findings highlight an interactive role of intuitive and analytic processes such that those prone to delusions may tend to rally cognitive resources to rationalize their intuitions.

A manufacturing study of a 0.372 THz 8-fold (8F) helically corrugated interaction region (HCIR) and measurement of its wave dispersion characteristics are reported. This demonstrates the structure’s suitability as the electron beam / electromagnetic wave interaction region in a high power frequency tunable Gyroresonant THz source. The 8F HCIR has an eigenmode, which is ideal for broadband tuning, created by the coupling of the TE61 and TE23 modes. Maximum power handling of 14 times larger than a 3-fold HCIR at the same frequency is calculated. A TE11 to TE61 7-fold (7F) helically corrugated waveguide (HCW) mode converter, needed to measure the wave dispersion of the 8F HCIR, was designed and constructed. Negative aluminium mandrels of the 7F HCW mode converter and 8F HCIR were manufactured. Copper structures were constructed through electroforming. The measured wave dispersion of the 0.372 THz 8F HCIR agreed well with simulated dispersion characteristics.

Prevalence estimates suggest that up to 20% of students in schools experience significant internalizing behaviors that impact behavioral, social, or academic functioning. School-based interventions have great potential to promote student mental health; however, validated and feasible brief assessments are needed to progress monitor students’ responses to these supports. The purpose of the current study was twofold: to (a) develop and validate teacher-completed brief rating scales for progress monitoring internalizing concerns in elementary-age students and (b) determine the reliability of the resultant measures. First, item content was generated and subjected to evaluation by two panels of school-based consumers and researchers. Within the second phase of development, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to reduce the initial number of items and ensure that the items were indicators of one latent factor. Teachers in Grades K–3 ( N = 307) each completed ratings for one randomly selected student in their classroom. Results of factor analysis for each scale indicated one-factor solutions for the 4-item Anxious/Depressed (ω = .88) and 4-item Socially Withdrawn (ω = .87) scales.

Research conducted to date provides a limited understanding of the landscape of school-based screening practices across academic, behavioral, and health domains, thus providing an impetus for the current survey study. A total of 475 K–Grade 12 school building administrators representing 409 unique school districts across the United States completed an online survey, which assessed current school-based screening practices across domains from the point of data collection to intervention selection. Whereas 70% to 81% of the respondents reported the use of universal screening across health and academic domains, respectively, only 9% of the respondents endorsed the use of universal social, emotional, and behavioral screening. In addition, discrepancies were identified across domains with regard to such factors as (a) who reviews screening data, (b) how screening data are used to determine student risk, and (c) how interventions are designed for those students demonstrating risk. The lack of consensus in practice calls for dissemination concerning best practices in the implementation of social, emotional, and behavioral screening; risk identification; and Tier 1 intervention.

A broadband, kW-level gyrotron traveling wave amplifier (gyro-TWA) in W-band was developed based on a helically corrugated interaction region and a cusp electron gun. Experiments were carried out to demonstrate the versatility of the gyro-TWA and to investigate its broad instantaneous amplification bandwidth. Following the successful prototyping, research is being carried out to improve the stability of the amplifier and widen its capability for continuous wave operation for long-range high-data-rate communication applications.

For better or for worse, authorship is a currency in scholarly research and advancement. In scholarly writing, authorship is widely acknowledged as a means of conferring credit but is also tied to concepts such as responsibility and accountability. Authorship is one of the most divisive topics both at the level of the research team and more broadly in the academy and beyond. At present, authorship is often the primary way to assert and receive credit in many scholarly pursuits and domains. Debates rage, publicly but mostly privately, regarding authorship. Here we attempt to clarify key concepts related to authorship informed by our collective experiences and anchored in relevant contemporary literature. Rather than dwelling on the problems, we focus on proactive strategies for creating more just, equitable, and transparent avenues for minimizing conflict around authorship and where there is adequate recognition of the entire process of knowledge generation, synthesis, sharing, and application with partners within and beyond the academy. We frame our ideas around 10 strategies that collectively constitute a roadmap for avoiding and overcoming challenges associated with authorship decisions.

In this article, a transmission line system for the propagation of millimeter-wave radiation is presented. The full system includes a TE11-to-TE01 mode converter, waveguide tapers, miter bends, and many straight sections. The design of each of these components is described, and the optimized simulation results are given. The mode converter shows a greater than 96% mode conversion efficiency that can be achieved over a 2% bandwidth at the ${W}$ -band. The miter bends demonstrate a transmission loss of 0.04 dB each over the same bandwidth when they are configured to introduce a mixture of higher order waveguide modes before the reflecting surface. An example transmission line system with a propagation length of 20 m, inclusive of four 90° bends with an oxygen-free high conductivity (OFHC) copper waveguide material, was studied over a 90–96-GHz frequency range and showed a 0.84-dB transmission loss at 93 GHz.

Associative nitrogen (N2)‐fixation (ANF) by bacteria in the root‐zone of perennial bioenergy grasses has the potential to replace or supplement N fertilizer and support sustainable production of biomass, but its application in marginal ecosystems requires further evaluation. In this study, we first combined both greenhouse and field experiments, to explore the N2 fixation effects of three temperate feedstocks Miscanthus × giganteus (giant miscanthus, Freedom), Panicum virgatum (switchgrass, Alamo), and Saccharum sp. (energycane, Ho 02‐147). In field studies across three growing seasons, plant and soil pools of candidate feedstocks were partially composed of N derived from the atmosphere (Ndfa). Energycane, giant miscanthus, and switchgrass were estimated to derive >30%, %Ndfa. Greenhouse studies were also performed to trace isotopically labeled 15N2 into plant biomass and soil pools. Evidence for Ndfa was detected in all three feedstock grasses (using reference 15N of soil, chicory, and sorghum, δ15N~+7.0). Isotopically labeled 15N2 was traced into biomass (during grass elongation stage) and soil pools. Extrapolation of rates during the 24 hr labeling period to 50 days estimated 30%–55% of plant Ndfa, with the greatest Ndfa for energycane. The findings of the field natural abundance and greenhouse 15N2 feeding experiments provided complementary evidence that perennial bioenergy grasses have the potential to support relatively high rates of ANF, and accumulate diazotroph‐derived N into biomass when grown on non‐fertilized soil.

The gyrotron travelling wave tube amplifiers (gyro-TWAs) presented in this paper can operate with high efficiency (30%), huge powers and wide bandwidths at high frequencies that no other amplifier can provide. In principle, this is a technology that can be scaled to >1 THz and operate with 20% bandwidths. Resonant coupling of two dispersive waveguide modes in a helically corrugated interaction region (HCIR) can give rise to a non-dispersive eigenwave over a wide frequency band. The synchronism between the ideal wave and an electron cyclotron mode, either fundamental or harmonic, of a large orbit electron beam contributes to the broadband amplification. An electron beam of 55 keV, 1.5 A with a velocity pitch angle of ~1 generated by a thermionic cusp gun is used in our 100 GHz gyro-TWA experiment, which achieves an unsaturated output power of 3.4 kW and gain of 36–38 dB. The design and experimental results of the many components making the gyro-TWA will be presented individually and then the whole system will be introduced. The amplification of a swept signal by the W-band gyro-TWA is demonstrated showing its capabilities in the field of telecommunications. Furthermore, the design studies of a cusp electron gun in the triode configuration and the realization of a 3-fold HCIR operating at 372 GHz will also be displayed.

Mismatch negativity (MMN) amplitude has been widely shown to be diminished in schizophrenia and, more recently, in other psychotic disorders. Although there is considerable evidence linking MMN reduction to cognitive and functional deficits in schizophrenia, there is little evidence of associations with specific psychotic symptoms. Further, it is unclear if MMN reductions relate to specific symptoms, cognitive, and functional deficits transdiagnostically across different psychotic disorders. The present study examines MMN amplitude in a large cohort of cases diagnosed with psychotic disorders including schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder (N = 116); bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder (N = 75); and other psychotic disorders (N = 25), as well as individuals with no psychotic disorder diagnoses (N = 248). Furthermore, we examined the association of MMN with symptoms, cognitive functioning, and real-world functioning to determine whether these relationships differ by diagnosis. Results showed that MMN amplitude was reduced in cases overall compared to never-psychotic individuals, with no differences between psychotic disorders. Furthermore, there were transdiagnostic associations of reduced duration MMN (MMN-D) with worse auditory hallucinations (r = .14) and disorganization (r = .14), frequency MMN (MMN-F) with real-word functioning (r = .20) and episodic memory (r = -.22), and both components with executive functioning (MMN-D: r = -.17; MMN-F: r = -.15). Our findings relating MMN reductions with cognitive and real-world functioning replicate earlier research in schizophrenia and extend these relationships to other psychotic disorders. Furthermore, our correlations with MMN-D are consistent with computational modeling research and theoretical proposals that view MMN reduction, cognitive dysfunction, and psychotic symptoms as reflecting underlying predictive coding deficits. Aluminum-gallium-nitride photodetectors were successfully fabricated with micrometer-scale metal–semiconductor–metal structures and tested with ultrafast, UV laser pulses. The measurements were done with single-shot oscilloscopes. Pulse-broadening effects caused by the measurement system were systematically evaluated and reduced to resolve the intrinsic response time of the detector. The best-performing devices showed a response time of below 25 ps and dark currents below 20 pA. The devices showed linear response with the bias voltage and the laser energy.
