In the frame of the conceptual design studies for the Toroidal Field (TF) coils of DEMO, a solution based on a layer-wound magnet, rectangular-shaped Cable-in-Conduit conductors and W&R manufacturing approach, is being developed. The feasibility and performance of a large-size Nb3Sn conductor operating at about 82 kA in a 13 T field has been proven in the past. Another key technology to be demonstrated for a layer-wound TF coil, is that of a joint between two different conductor grades, to be possibly manufactured in-line during winding. The proposed joint solution would provide the minimum room occupancy, with the joint embedded within the winding pack volume. A joint between two low-field conductor grades, i.e., constituted of a small number of superconducting strands and a high number of stabilization copper wires, has been designed and manufactured. The two conductor lengths are characterized by a different number of superconducting wires and different outer dimensions. A joint sample has been assembled and instrumented, in the configuration allowing testing at the SULTAN facility of the Swiss Plasma Center. Both DC and AC performance of the joint has been characterized at the DEMO TF operating conditions. The present paper reports the main manufacturing steps for the joint and its main test results. The implications on the performance and design approach of the TF coil are also discussed, based on the outcome of such tests.

ENEA is currently involved in the manufacture of cable-in-conduit conductors (CICCs) for the magnets of the nuclear fusion facilities ITER and JT-60SA, as well as for laboratory superconducting magnets based on CICCs, as those of the NAFASSY and of the Nijmegen-High Field Magnetic Laboratory facilities. The acceptance tests of such industrial productions include the destructive examination of both cable and conductor samples. As widely experienced, during the manufacturing processes, deformations of both copper and superconducting wires may occur due to the large compaction forces involved to which the cabled structure is subjected. In order to evaluate the maximum extent to which typical deformations can be accepted at the level of the single wire within a cable, the characterization of wires artificially deformed has been carried out in terms of mechanical, structural, and electromagnetic properties. In addition, some relevant wire sections extracted from the destructive examination samples have been also characterized. Experimental results demonstrate the negligible influence on the overall conductor performances to be expected for the typical deformations that occur during cable and conductor manufacture. © 2014 IEEE.

Within the frame of the R&D activities carried out in Europe for the toroidal field coils of the nuclear fusion device DEMO, a fundamental milestone was considered to be the demonstration of Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) performance in the demanding range of interest for DEMO. Among the different technological solutions envisaged, the present paper deals with a wind & react CICC solution, with rectangular geometry, thick steel jacket, and distributed pressure relief channel, designed to operate at 82 kA in a magnetic field of 13 T and with a current sharing temperature ${\rm{T}}_{{\rm{cs}}}\,{\rm{> \,6.5\,K}}$ . The main manufacturing steps of the prototype conductor are described in the present paper, carried out within industrial environment, partly using the facilities and procedures available for the manufacture of ITER conductors. A sample was designed for the EDIPO facility at the Swiss Plasma Center, Switzerland, in the configuration usually adopted for the test of ITER poloidal field conductors, where the two straight conductor legs are part of the same cable length, with a continuous transition through a bottom hairpin-type joint, thus avoiding any resistive connection. The conductor has been characterized in terms of dc performance at relevant operating conditions and the absence of any performance degradation with electro-magnetic load cycles has been verified, thus, qualifying the proposed technological solution. AC losses and thermo-hydraulic tests have also been carried out, providing relevant information for further coil design.

The deposition and characterization of La2Zr2O7 thin films deposited by metal-organic decomposition method on both single crystal SrTiO3 and cube textured Ni-5 at.%W substrates are presented. Metal acetylacetonates in propionic acid solution was used. The results showed that LZO films are epitaxially grown with smooth surface with rms roughness around 2 nm. YBa2Cu3O7-δ films, deposited by pulsed laser deposition technique on LZO buffer layers, showed critical temperature of 90 K and critical current density in self magnetic field Jc = 1.6 and 13 MA/cm2 at 77 K and 4.2 K, respectively. A better Jc retention in magnetic field for YBCO films deposited on LZO/STO than YBCO on bare STO is observed indicating a rather strong vortex pinning as confirmed by microwave measurements.

Existing animal models of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) present several problems: they are hard to reproduce, they are inefficient, and the CNV created is not sustainable. The purpose of this study is to develop a highly efficient, reliable, sustainable rabbit model of CNV to facilitate the study of anti-angiogenic and anti-proliferative therapies for ocular diseases. Twenty-two pigmented rabbits were used in this study. Eleven rabbits received subretinal injections of either 10 microl of Matrigel with 500 ng of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) or 20 microl of Matrigel with 750 ng of VEGF; eight rabbits received subretinal injections of either 10 or 20 microl of Matrigel only; three rabbits used as controls received subretinal injections of 20 microl phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) alone. Fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography, and histologic examinations were performed 1, 2, 4, and 9 weeks after injection. All experimental eyes showed angiographic leakage within this localized area 1 week after injection. The amount of leakage usually increased at weeks 2 and 4 and, in most cases, persisted at week 9. Control eyes demonstrated no leakage at any time point. Optical coherence tomography of treated eyes showed subretinal fluid and the presence of a lesion, possibly vascular or fibrotic, at the site of the leakage. Histologic analysis confirmed the presence of new subretinal blood vessels in the areas of Matrigel deposit. In conclusion, this novel method provides a highly reproducible, reliable, and sustainable rabbit model of experimental choroidal neovascularization. Such a model may prove useful for screening new anti-angiogenic therapies in a larger animal eye.

A new series connected 25 T hybrid magnet system is being set up by the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB) for neutron scattering experiments. CRPP has designed and manufactured a pair of 20 kA current leads for the powering of the outer superconducting coils of the hybrid magnet system. In connection with the test of joints for JT60SA, the current leads were tested at ENEA at low voltage up to a current of 18 kA. The mass flow rates required to cool the current leads at different currents measured in the test are in line with the design calculations. For the sum of the resistances of the warm and cold end copper contacts of the HTS module values of 13 (Lead A) and 11 nΩ (Lead B) were measured. In addition, the helium flow through the heat exchanger part was stopped at 10 and 12 kA to study the behaviour of the current leads in case of a loss of flow. The time elapsed between stopping of the helium mass flow and the initiation of a quench was found to be 117 s (Lead A) and 125 s (Lead B) compared to a calculated value of 86 s. The lower value obtained by the calculation can be attributed to the lower initial temperatures in the experiment. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The goal was to evaluate how perceptual thresholds are related to electrode impedance, electrode size, the distance of electrodes from the retinal surface, and retinal thickness in six subjects blind as a result of retinitis pigmentosa, who received epiretinal prostheses implanted monocularly as part of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved clinical trial.The implant consisted of an extraocular unit containing electronics for wireless data, power recovery, and generation of stimulus current, and an intraocular unit containing 16 platinum stimulating electrodes (260- or 520-microm diameter) arranged in a 4 x 4 pattern. The electrode array was held onto the retina by a small tack. Stimulation was controlled by a computer-based external system that allowed independent control over each electrode. Perceptual thresholds (the current necessary to see a percept on 79% of trials) and impedance were measured for each electrode on a biweekly basis. The distance of electrodes from the retinal surface and retinal thickness were measured by optical coherence tomography on a less regular basis.Stimulation thresholds for detecting phosphenes correlated with the distance of the electrodes from the retinal surface, but not with electrode size, electrode impedance, or retinal thickness.Maintaining close proximity between the electrode array and the retinal surface is critical in developing a successful retinal implant. With the development of chronic electrode arrays that are stable and flush on the retinal surface, it is likely that the influence of other factors such as electrode size, retinal degeneration, and subject age will become more apparent. The 'NAFASSY' (NAtional FAcility for Superconducting SYstems) facility is designed to test wound conductor samples under high-field conditions at variable temperatures. Due to its unique features, it is reasonable to assume that in the near future NAFASSY will have a preeminent role at the international level in the qualification of long coiled cables in operative conditions. The magnetic system consists of a large warm bore background solenoid, made up of three series-connected grading sections obtained by winding three different Nb3Sn Cable-in-Conduit Conductors. Thanks to the financial support of the Italian Ministry for University and Research the low-field coil is currently under production. The design has been properly modified to allow the system to operate also as a stand-alone facility, with an inner bore diameter of 1144 mm. This magnet is able to provide about 7 T on its axis and about 8 T close to the insert inner radius, giving the possibility of performing a test relevant for large-sized NbTi or medium-field Nb3Sn conductors. The detailed design of the 8 T magnet, including the electro-magnetic, structural and thermo-hydraulic analysis, is here reported, as well as the production status. © 2015 IOP Publishing Ltd.

In this work, ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) thin films were evaluated for use as hermetic and bioinert coatings for a retinal microchip. These films were deposited on highly conductive Si substrates at different temperatures (from 400 to 800°C), using microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition with argon-rich Ar/CH4 gas mixtures and different relative amounts of hydrogen (0–20%). A novel miniaturized intraocular video camera for use in conjunction with an epiretinal microstimulator array as a retinal prosthesis has been designed, optimized for low pixel resolution, fabricated, surgically implanted in a canine, and characterized.

This paper describes the results of the measurements performed in June 2011 on a NbTi cable-in-conduit conductor curved joint in the ENEA Superconductivity Laboratories (C.R. Frascati). The effectiveness of the joint design, patented by ENEA, had been already verified for the Nb3Sn EDIPO conductor; in this case, it has been applied to a NbTi cable-in-conduit conductor. The joint was manufactured and instrumented by ENEA, using part of a JT-60SA toroidal field conductor sample (namely the TFCRS) produced by Luvata Italy and successfully tested in SULTAN. For testing purposes, the NbTi 'shaking hands'-type joint was hosted in a variable temperature cryostat with a background superconducting magnet. The sample was used as the secondary coil of a transformer having the background magnet as primary coil. Measurements were preceded by preliminary code simulation studies computed in the Matlab workspace, and by 3-D finite element method analyses, to estimate the test requirements and its feasibility. The joint resistance value, found to be less than 2 nΩ has been derived both by the sample current decay time constant evaluation and by calorimetric calculations. After a short description of the joint design and fabrication, as well as of the test instrumentation and geometry, the joint resistance evaluation will be presented, together with the data analysis procedures and results. © 2012 IEEE.

The European and the Korean contributions to the ITER Project in terms of cable-in-conduit conductors have been assigned to the Italian Consortium for Applied Superconductivity (ICAS). ICAS' charter members are: ENEA, with the role of general supervision and monitoring, CRIOTEC Impianti S.r.l., in charge of jacketing activities, and TRATOS Cavi S.p.A., with the duty of cable manufacturing. The ITER production consists of about 40 km of Nb3Sn toroidal field (TF) conductor and 22 km of NbTi poloidal field (PF) conductor, for coils 1 and 6. As part of the EU contribution to the construction of the JT-60SA Japanese Tokamak Reactor, ICAS is also in charge of producing about 28 km of NbTi TF conductor, required for the whole TF magnet system. Thanks to the high level and unique expertise available at ICAS, the consortium has been also assigned to manufacture the ITER Central Solenoid conductor samples to be tested in SULTAN for the final, positive, assessment of the updated design. In the present paper, the steps leading to the successful qualification of the main production processes will be described. What is more, the manufacturing of the first conductor unit lengths of the 'production phase,' i.e., the ones that will be wound to operate in the actual ITER TF and JT-60SA TF superconducting magnets, will be reported. The fabrication of the ITER CS conductor samples will be illustrated as well. © 2012 IEEE.
