Novel development in mouse phenotyping 2014: et al., The International Knockout Mouse Consortium (IKMC) developed high throughput gene trapping and gene targeting pipelines that produced mostly conditional mutations of more than 18,500 genes in C57BL/6N mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells which have been archived and are freely available to the research community as a frozen resource. From this unprecedented resource more than 6000 mutant mouse strains have been generated by the IKMC in collaboration with the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC). In addition, a cre-driver resource was established including 250 C57BL/6 cre-inducible mouse strains. Complementing the cre-driver resource, a collection comprising 27 rAAVs expressing cre in a tissue-specific manner has also been produced. All resources are easily accessible from the IKMC/IMPC web portal (www.mousephenotype.org). Seed germination is influenced by several environmental factors, including light and temperature. Several native Australian taxa in the Amaranth family (Amaranthaceae) have ornamental qualities that are prerequisites for commercialization of a new crop. Our objective was to quantify the effect of temperature on seed germination of native Australian forbs with desirable ornamental qualities. We germinated seeds of Gomphrena flaccida, Ptilotus exaltatus, P. spicatus, and P. macrocephalus across temperatures ranging from ≈8 to 30°C on a thermal gradient table. Seeds were monitored daily for germination. After 28 d, germination of P. macrocephalus and all three P. spicatus seed lots was 0 to 5 or 8%, respectively, across all temperatures. Alternatively, up to 85 and 90% of G. flaccida and P. exaltatus seeds germinated, respectively. The time to initial germination (t1) of G. flaccida was delayed by ≈5-11 d for temperatures below 17°C, whereas t1 of P. exaltatus was delayed by ≈5-9 d at 11°C compared to warmer temperatures. Although the metabolic rate of G. flaccida and P. exaltatus is similar, as indicated by reciprocal time to median germination (1/t50), the range of base (Tb) and optimum temperatures (Topt) for germination benchmarks varied between species. Our data indicate that G. flaccida requires higher temperatures during germination for maximizing cumulative germination and minimizing germination time compared to P. exaltatus.

Current commercial Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) systems are found at a high cost and allow little interaction between the user and the system. This paper presents a low cost and flexible GPR platform attractive for use in education and research based on the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) developed by Ettus Research. A software application developed in Labview enables users to select and modify fundamental parameters of the transmission and reception stages of a GPR system. Users are able to modify parameters such as sampling and carrier frequencies, waveform shape, amplitude, and bandwidth. The programmability of the USRP in conjunction with the developed software tools provides a user-friendly GPR platform.

6. Simplified control of switched reluctance machines for ACgeneration

The switched reluctance machine, typically used as a motor, has recently been investigated for use as a DC generator and also as an AC generator. But existing control schemes for AC generation with only one power conversion stage (a cycloconverter) require complex computations and correspondingly sophisticated (digital) circuitry to implement them. This paper describes a simplified scheme for controlling such a machine paired with a cycloconverter to produce single-phase AC voltage. Firstly, polynomial approximations of the solutions to those differential equations governing the combined system's behavior were determined in order to simplify their computation. Then interpolations were used to simplify the calculation of the required switching device firing angles from the approximate solutions. Test results from a lab prototype confirm the speed and effectiveness of this novel simplified control scheme.

Ibuprofen-loaded poly(ethyl cyanoacrylate) nanoparticles were prepared by semicontinuous heterophase polymerization of ethyl cyanoacrylate in the presence of ibuprofen; different surfactant concentration, pH, and temperature were used. Particle size was measured by quasi-light scattering and transmission electron microscopy, while the amount of drug released was determined by UV spectroscopy. Nanoparticles with diameters between 10 and 58 nm, loaded with ibuprofen, were obtained. The smallest particles and the higher drug loading were obtained at the highest pH tested. The analysis of the release data showed that the drug release profiles correspond to the Weibull model. Moreover, it was found that most of the ibuprofen is released within the first 80–120 min; initially the release rate is slow, but then it increases to finally decrease. This behavior contrasts with the reported burst of drug concentration in the plasma after oral administration of IB.

Clinicopatholigic findings in 8 patients with Paget's disease of the vulva are presented with a discussion if its pathogenesis. In 7 cases the disease was intraepithelial, and in 1 it was accompanied by underlying adenocarcinoma. The treatment of choice is surgical. The importance of early diagnosis, adequate excision, and close followup is emphasized. In 2 cases, the disease was associated with carcinoma of the breast and in 1 case with carcinoma of the liver.

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014.
