Search

This work presents the results from extending the long-term monitoring program of stellar motions within the Galactic Center to include stars with separations of 2 - 7 arcseconds from the compact radio source, Sgr A*. In comparison to the well studied inner 2 arcsec, a longer baseline in time is required to study these stars. With 17 years of data, a sufficient number of positions along the orbits of these outer stars can now be measured. This was achieved by designing a source finder to track the positions of ~ 2000 stars in NACO/VLT adaptive-optics-assisted images of the Galactic Center from 2002 to 2019. Of the studied stars, 54 exhibit significant accelerations toward Sgr A*, most of which have separations of between 2 and 3 arcseconds from the black hole. A further 20 of these stars have measurable radial velocities from SINFONI/VLT stellar spectra, which allows for the calculation of the orbital elements for these stars, thus increasing the number of known orbits in the Galactic Center by ~ 40 %. With orbits, we can consider which structural features within the Galactic Center nuclear star cluster these stars belong to. Most of the stars have orbital solutions that are consistent with the known clockwise rotating disk feature. Further, by employing Monte Carlo sampling for stars without radial velocity measurements, we show that many stars have a subset of possible orbits that are consistent with one of the known disk features within the Galactic Center., Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Volume 670

Using kinematics to decompose galaxies' mass profiles, including the dark matter contribution, often requires parameterization of the baryonic mass distribution based on ancillary information. One such model choice is a deprojected S\'ersic profile with an assumed intrinsic geometry. The case of flattened, deprojected S\'ersic models has previously been applied to flattened bulges in local star-forming galaxies (SFGs), but can also be used to describe the thick, turbulent disks in distant SFGs. Here we extend this previous work that derived density ($\rho$) and circular velocity ($v_{\rm circ}$) curves by additionally calculating the spherically-enclosed 3D mass profiles ($M_{\rm sph}$). Using these profiles, we compare the projected and 3D mass distributions, quantify the differences between the projected and 3D half-mass radii ($R_{\rm e}; r_{\rm 1/2,mass,3D}$), and present virial coefficients relating $v_{\rm circ}(R)$ and $M_{\rm sph}(, Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures. GN-108036 is a star-forming galaxy at $z=7.21$, and one of the most distant known sources in the Northern hemisphere. Based on observations from the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA), here we report the tentative detection of the [CII] line at $\approx4\sigma$ significance. The integrated [CII] line emission is spatially offset about $\sim4$ kpc from the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) emission. The total [CII] luminosity ($L_{\rm [CII]}=2.7\times10^8~L_{\odot}$) is consistent with the relation between [CII] luminosity and star formation rate (SFR) observed in nearby and high-$z$ star forming galaxies. More interestingly, the [CII] line is blueshifted with respect to the Ly$\alpha$ line by $980\pm10$ km s$^{-1}$. If confirmed, this corresponds to the largest velocity offset reported to date between the Ly$\alpha$ line and a non-resonant line at $z\gtrsim6$. According to trends observed in other high redshift galaxies, the large Ly$\alpha$ velocity offset in GN-108036 is consistent with its low Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width and high UV absolute magnitude. Based on Ly$\alpha$ radiative transfer models of expanding shells, the large Ly$\alpha$ velocity offset in GN-108036 could be interpreted as the presence of a large column density of hydrogen gas, and/or an outflow with a velocity of $v_{\rm out}\sim\Delta v_{\rm Ly \alpha}/2\sim500$ km s$^{-1}$. We also report the 3$\sigma$ detection of a potential galaxy companion located $\sim30$ kpc east of GN-108036, at a similar systemic velocity, and with no counterpart rest-frame UV emission., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters, 8 pages, 6 figures

Synchrotron processes, the radiative processes associated with the interaction of energetic charged particles with magnetic field, are of interest in many areas in astronomy, from the interstellar medium to extreme environments near compact objects. Consequently, observations of synchrotron sources carry information on the physical properties of the sources themselves and those of their close vicinity. In recent years, novel observations of such sources with multi-wavelength collaborations reveal complex features and peculiarities, especially near black holes. Exploring the nature of these sources in more detail necessitates numerical tools complementary to analytical one-zone modelling efforts. In this paper, we introduce an open-source Python package tailored to this purpose, FLAREMODEL. The core of the code consists of low-level utility functions to describe physical processes relevant to synchrotron sources, which are written in C for performance and parallelised with OpenMP for scalability. The Python interface provides access to these functions and built-in source models are provided as a guidance. At the same time, the modular design of the code and the generic nature of these functions enable users to build a variety of source models applicable to many astrophysical synchrotron sources. We describe our methodology and the structure of our code along with selected examples demonstrating capabilities and options for future modelling efforts.

We use a combination of new NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) observations of the pair of [CI] transitions, the CO(7-6) line, and the dust continuum, in addition to ancillary CO(1-0) and CO(3-2) data, to study the molecular gas properties of Q1700-MD94, a massive, main-sequence galaxy at $z\approx2$. We find that for a reasonable set of assumptions for a typical massive star-forming galaxy, the CO(1-0), the [CI](1-0) and the dust continuum yield molecular gas masses that are consistent within a factor of $\sim2$. The global excitation properties of the molecular gas as traced by the [CI] and CO transitions are similar to those observed in other massive, star-forming galaxies at $z\sim2$. Our large velocity gradient (LVG) modeling using RADEX of the CO and [CI] spectral line energy distributions (SLEDs) suggests the presence of relatively warm ($T_{\rm kin}=41$K), dense ($n_{\rm H_2}=8\times10^{3}~{\rm cm}^{-3}$) molecular gas, comparable to the high-excitation molecular gas component observed in main-sequence, star-forming galaxies at $z\sim1$. The galaxy size in the CO(1-0) and CO(7-6) line emission are comparable, which suggests that the highly-excited molecular gas is distributed throughout the disk powered by intense star formation activity. These protoplanetary disks in T Tauri stars play a central role in star and planet formation. We spatially resolve at sub-au scales the innermost regions of a sample of T Tauri's disks to better understand their morphology and composition. We extended our homogeneous data set of 27 Herbig stars and collected near-IR K-band observations of 17 T Tauri stars, spanning effective temperatures and luminosities in the ranges of ~4000-6000 K and ~0.4-10 Lsun. We focus on the continuum emission and develop semi-physical geometrical models to fit the interferometric data and search for trends between the properties of the disk and the central star. The best-fit models of the disk's inner rim correspond to wide rings. We extend the Radius-luminosity relation toward the smallest luminosities (0.4-10 Lsun) and find the R~L^(1/2) trend is no longer valid, since the K-band sizes measured with GRAVITY are larger than the predicted sizes from sublimation radius computation. No clear correlation between the K-band half-flux radius and the mass accretion rate is seen. Having magnetic truncation radii in agreement with the K-band GRAVITY sizes would require magnetic fields as strong as a few kG, which should have been detected, suggesting that accretion is not the main process governing the location of the half-flux radius of the inner dusty disk. Our measurements agree with models that take into account the scattered light. The N-to-K band size ratio may be a proxy for disentangling disks with silicate features in emission from disks with weak and/or in absorption silicate features. The formation and evolution of planetary systems impact the primordial accretion disk. HD141569 is the only known pre-main sequence star characterized by a hybrid disk. Observations probed the outer-disk structure showing a complex system of rings and interferometric observations attempted to characterize its inner 5 au region, but derived limited constraints. The goal of this work was to explore with new high-resolution interferometric observations the properties of the dust and gas in the internal regions of HD141569. We observed HD141569 on mas scales with GRAVITY/VLTI in the near-infrared at low and high spectral resolution. We interpreted the visibilities and spectral energy distribution with geometrical models and radiative transfer techniques to constrain the dust emission. We analyzed the high spectral resolution quantities to investigate the properties of the Br-Gamma line emitting region. Thanks to the combination of three different epochs, GRAVITY resolves the inner dusty disk in the K band. Data modeling shows that an IR excess of about 6% is spatially resolved and that the origin of this emission is confined in a ring of material located at a radius of 1 au from the star with a width smaller than 0.3 au. The MCMax modeling suggests that this emission could originate from a small amount of QHPs, while large silicate grain models cannot reproduce at the same time the observational constraints on the properties of near-IR and mid-IR fluxes. The differential phases in the Br-Gamma line clearly show an S-shape that can be best reproduced witha gas disk in Keplerian rotation, confined within 0.09 au. This is also hinted at by the double-peaked Br-Gamma emission line shape. The modeling of the continuum and gas emission shows that the inclination and position angle of these two components are consistent with a system showing relatively coplanar rings on all scales., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 25 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables

We investigate what drives the redshift evolution of the typical electron density (n e ) in star-forming galaxies, using a sample of 140 galaxies drawn primarily from KMOS3D (0.6 < z < 2.6) and 471 galaxies from SAMI (z < 0.113). We select galaxies that do not show evidence of active galactic nucleus activity or outflows to constrain the average conditions within H ii regions. Measurements of the [S ii]λ6716/[S ii]λ6731 ratio in four redshift bins indicate that the local n e in the line-emitting material decreases from 187 cm−3 at z ∼ 2.2 to 32 cm−3 at z ∼ 0, consistent with previous results. We use the Hα luminosity to estimate the rms n e averaged over the volumes of star-forming disks at each redshift. The local and volume-averaged n e evolve at similar rates, hinting that the volume filling factor of the line-emitting gas may be approximately constant across 0 ≲ z ≲ 2.6. The KMOS3D and SAMI galaxies follow a roughly monotonic trend between n e and star formation rate, but the KMOS3D galaxies have systematically higher n e than the SAMI galaxies at a fixed offset from the star-forming main sequence, suggesting a link between the n e evolution and the evolving main sequence normalization. We quantitatively test potential drivers of the density evolution and find that n e (rms) , suggesting that the elevated n e in high-z H ii regions could plausibly be the direct result of higher densities in the parent molecular clouds. There is also tentative evidence that n e could be influenced by the balance between stellar feedback, which drives the expansion of H ii regions, and the ambient pressure, which resists their expansion.

Aims.We aim to demonstrate that the presence and mass of an exoplanet can now be effectively derived from the astrometry of another exoplanet.Methods.We combined previous astrometry ofβPictoris b with a new set of observations from the GRAVITY interferometer. The orbital motion ofβPictoris b is fit using Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations in Jacobi coordinates. The inner planet,βPictoris c, was also reobserved at a separation of 96 mas, confirming the previous orbital estimations.Results.From the astrometry of planet b only, we can (i) detect the presence ofβPictoris c and (ii) constrain its mass to 10.04−3.10+4.53MJup. If one adds the astrometry ofβPictoris c, the mass is narrowed down to 9.15−1.06+1.08MJup. The inclusion of radial velocity measurements does not affect the orbital parameters significantly, but it does slightly decrease the mass estimate to 8.89−0.75+0.75MJup. With a semimajor axis of 2.68 ± 0.02 au, a period of 1221 ± 15 days, and an eccentricity of 0.32 ± 0.02, the orbital parameters ofβPictoris c are now constrained as precisely as those ofβPictoris b. The orbital configuration is compatible with a high-order mean-motion resonance (7:1). The impact of the resonance on the planets’ dynamics would then be negligible with respect to the secular perturbations, which might have played an important role in the eccentricity excitation of the outer planet.

We use PIONIER data from the ESO archive and GRAVITY data that were obtained in June 2017 with the four 8m telescopes. We use a parametric disk model and the 3D radiative transfer code MCFOST to reproduce the Spectral Energy Distribution and match the interferometric observations. To match the SED , our model requires a stellar luminosity of 2.5 Lsun, higher than any previously determined values. Such a high value is needed to accommodate the circumstellar extinction caused by the highly inclined disk, which has been neglected in previous studies. While using an effective temperature of 4800 K determined through high-resolution spectroscopy, we derive a stellar radius of 2.29 Rsun. These revised fundamental parameters, when combined with the mass estimates available , lead to an age of 0.5-2.0 Ma for RY Lup, in better agreement with the age of the Lupus association than previous determinations. Our disk model nicely reproduces the interferometric GRAVITY data and is in good agreement with the PIONIER ones. We derive an inner rim location at 0.12~au from the central star. This model corresponds to an inclination of the inner disk of 50deg, which is in mild tension with previous determinations of a more inclined outer disk from SPHERE (70 deg in NIR) and ALMA(67 $\pm$5 deg) images, but consistent with the inclination determination from the ALMA CO spectra (55$\pm$5deg). Increasing the inclination of the inner disk to 70 deg leads to a higher line-of-sight extinction and therefore requires a higher stellar luminosity of 4.65 Lsun to match the observed flux levels. This luminosity would translate to a stellar radius of 3.13~Rsun, leading to an age of 2-3~Ma, and a stellar mass of about 2 Msun, in disagreement with the observed dynamical mass estimate of 1.3-1.5 Msun. We report on our combined analysis of HST, VLT/MUSE, VLT/SINFONI, and ALMA observations of the local Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 5728 to investigate in detail the feeding and feedback of the AGN. The datasets simultaneously probe the morphology, excitation, and kinematics of the stars, ionized gas, and molecular gas over a large range of spatial scales (10 pc--10 kpc). NGC 5728 contains a large stellar bar which is driving gas along prominent dust lanes to the inner 1 kpc where the gas settles into a circumnuclear ring. The ring is strongly star forming and contains a substantial population of young stars as indicated by the lowered stellar velocity dispersion and gas excitation consistent with HII regions. We model the kinematics of the ring using the velocity field of the CO (2--1) emission and stars and find it is consistent with a rotating disk. The outer regions of the disk, where the dust lanes meet the ring, show signatures of inflow at a rate of 1 M$_{\sun}$ yr$^{-1}$. Inside the ring, we observe three molecular gas components corresponding to the circular rotation of the outer ring, a warped disk, and the nuclear stellar bar. The AGN is driving an ionized gas outflow that reaches a radius of 250 pc with a mass outflow rate of 0.08 M$_{\sun}$ yr$^{-1}$ consistent with its luminosity and scaling relations from previous studies. While we observe distinct holes in CO emission which could be signs of molecular gas removal, we find that largely the AGN is not disrupting the structure of the circumnuclear region., accepted for publication in MNRAS; 22 pages + Appendix, 16 figures

Aims. We aim to search and characterize inflows and outflows of molecular gas in four ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at $z\sim0.2-0.3$ and one distant QSO at $z=6.13$. Methods. We use Herschel PACS and ALMA Band 7 observations of the hydroxyl molecule (OH) line at rest-frame wavelength 119 $\mu$m which in absorption can provide unambiguous evidence for inflows or outflows of molecular gas in nuclear regions of galaxies. Our study contributes to double the number of OH observations of luminous systems at $z\sim0.2-0.3$, and push the search for molecular outflows based on the OH transition to $z\sim6$. Results. We detect OH high-velocity absorption wings in three of the four ULIRGs. In two cases, IRAS F20036-1547 and IRAS F13352+6402, the blueshifted absorption profiles indicate the presence of powerful and fast molecular gas outflows. Consistent with an inside-out quenching scenario, these outflows are depleting the central reservoir of molecular gas at a similar rate than the intense star formation activity. In the case of the starburst-dominated system IRAS 10091+4704, we detect an inverted P-Cygni profile that is unique among ULIRGs and indicates the presence of a fast ($\sim400$ km s$^{-1}$) inflow of molecular gas at a rate of $\sim100~M_{\odot}~{\rm yr}^{-1}$ towards the central region. Finally, we tentatively detect ($\sim3\sigma$) the OH doublet in absorption in the $z=6.13$ QSO ULAS J131911+095051. The OH feature is blueshifted with a median velocity that suggests the presence of a molecular outflow, although characterized by a modest molecular mass loss rate of $\sim200~M_{\odot}~{\rm yr}^{-1}$. This value is comparable to the small mass outflow rates found in the stacking of the [CII] spectra of other $z\sim6$ QSOs and suggests that ejective feedback in this phase of the evolution of ULAS J131911+095051 has subsided., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A as a Letter to the Editor

The nature of the gaseous and dusty cloud G2 in the Galactic Centre is still under debate. We present three-dimensional hydrodynamical adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) simulations of G2, modeled as an outflow from a "compact source" moving on the observed orbit. The construction of mock position-velocity (PV) diagrams enables a direct comparison with observations and allow us to conclude that the observational properties of the gaseous component of G2 could be matched by a massive ($\dot{M}_\mathrm{w}=5\times 10^{-7} \;M_{\odot} \mathrm{yr^{-1}}$) and slow ($50 \;\mathrm{km \;s^{-1}}$) outflow, as observed for T Tauri stars. In order for this to be true, only the material at larger ($>100 \;\mathrm{AU}$) distances from the source must be actually emitting, otherwise G2 would appear too compact compared to the observed PV diagrams. On the other hand, the presence of a central dusty source might be able to explain the compactness of G2's dust component. In the present scenario, 5-10 years after pericentre the compact source should decouple from the previously ejected material, due to the hydrodynamic interaction of the latter with the surrounding hot and dense atmosphere. To understand the role that AGN feedback plays in galaxy evolution we need in-depth studies of the multi-phase structure and energetics of galaxy-wide outflows. In this work we present new, deep ($\sim$50 hr) NOEMA CO(1-0) line observations of the molecular gas in the powerful outflow driven by the AGN in the ultra-luminous infrared galaxy IRAS F08572+3915. We spatially resolve the outflow, finding that its most likely configuration is a wide-angle bicone aligned with the kinematic major axis of the rotation disk. The molecular gas in the wind reaches velocities up to approximately $\pm$1200 km s$^{-1}$ and transports nearly 20% of the molecular gas mass in the system. We detect a second outflow component located $\sim$6 kpc north-west from the galaxy moving away at $\sim$900 km s$^{-1}$, which could be the result of a previous episode of AGN activity. The total mass and energetics of the outflow, which includes contributions from the ionized, neutral, warm and cold molecular gas phases is strongly dominated by the cold molecular gas. In fact, the molecular mass outflow rate is higher than the star formation rate, even if we only consider the gas in the outflow that is fast enough to escape the galaxy, which accounts for about $\sim$40% of the total mass of the outflow. This results in an outflow depletion time for the molecular gas in the central $\sim$1.5 kpc region of only $\sim3$ Myr, a factor of $\sim2$ shorter than the depletion time by star formation activity., 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Precise measurements of the S-stars orbiting SgrA* have set strong constraints on the nature of the compact object at the centre of the Milky Way. The presence of a black hole in that region is well established, but its neighboring environment is still an open debate. In that respect, the existence of dark matter in that central region may be detectable due to its strong signatures on the orbits of stars: the main effect is a Newtonian precession which will affect the overall pericentre shift of S2, the latter being a target measurement of the GRAVITY instrument. The exact nature of this dark matter (e.g., stellar dark remnants or diffuse dark matter) is unknown. This article assumes it to be an scalar field of toroidal distribution, associated with ultra-light dark matter particles, surrounding the Kerr black hole. Such a field is a form of "hair" expected in the context of superradiance, a mechanism that extracts rotational energy from the black hole. Orbital signatures for the S2 star are computed and shown to be detectable by GRAVITY. We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array observations of the [C II] 158 μm transition and the dust continuum in HZ4, a typical star-forming galaxy when the Universe was only ∼1 Gyr old (z ≈ 5.5). Our high ≈0.3″ spatial resolution allows us to study the relationships between [C II] line emission, star formation rate, and far-infrared emission on spatial scales of ∼2 kpc. In the central ∼4 kpc of HZ4, the [C II]/FIR is ∼3 × 10−3 on global scales as well as on spatially resolved scales of ∼2 kpc, comparable to the ratio observed in local moderate starburst galaxies such as M 82 or M 83. For the first time in an individual normal galaxy at this redshift, we find evidence for outflowing gas from the central star-forming region in the direction of the minor axis of the galaxy. The projected velocity of the outflow is ∼400 km s−1, and the neutral gas-mass outflow rate is ∼3 − 6 times higher than the star formation rate in the central region. Finally, we detect a diffuse component of [C II] emission, or [C II] halo, that extends beyond the star-forming disk and has a diameter of ∼12 kpc. The outflow, which has a velocity approximately half of the escape velocity of the system, most likely partly fuels the [C II] extended emission. Together with the kinematic analysis of HZ4 (presented in a forthcoming paper), the analysis supports the hypothesis that HZ4 is a typical star-forming disk at z ∼ 5 with interstellar medium conditions similar to present-day galaxies forming stars at a similar level, driving a galactic outflow that may already play a role in its evolution.

Having completed its commissioning phase, the Advanced Rayleigh guided Ground-layer adaptive Optics System (ARGOS) facility is coming online for scientific observations at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). With six Rayleigh laser guide stars in two constellations and the corresponding wavefront sensing, ARGOS corrects the ground-layer distortions for both LBT 8.4m eyes with their adaptive secondary mirrors. Under regular observing conditions, this set-up delivers a point spread function (PSF) size reduction by a factor of ~2--3 compared to a seeing-limited operation. With the two LUCI infrared imaging and multi-object spectroscopy instruments receiving the corrected images, observations in the near-infrared can be performed at high spatial and spectral resolution. We discuss the final ARGOS technical set-up and the adaptive optics performance. We show that imaging cases with ground-layer adaptive optics (GLAO) are enhancing several scientific programmes, from cluster colour magnitude diagrams and Milky Way embedded star formation, to nuclei of nearby galaxies or extragalactic lensing fields. In the unique combination of ARGOS with the multi-object near-infrared spectroscopy available in LUCI over a 4x4 arcmin field of view, the first scientific observations have been performed on local and high-z objects. Those high spatial and spectral resolution observations demonstrate the capabilities now at hand with ARGOS at the LBT., 21 pages, 28 figures

The SHINING survey (Paper I; Herrera-Camus et al. 2018) offers a great opportunity to study the properties of the ionized and neutral media of galaxies from prototypical starbursts and active galactic nuclei (AGN) to heavily obscured objects. Based on Herschel/PACS observations of the main far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure lines, in this paper we analyze the physical mechanisms behind the observed line deficits in galaxies, the apparent offset of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) from the mass-metallicity relation, and the scaling relations between [CII] 158 $\mu$m line emission and star formation rate (SFR). Based on a toy model and the Cloudy code, we conclude that the increase in the ionization parameter with FIR surface brightness can explain the observed decrease in the line-to-FIR continuum ratio of galaxies. In the case of the [CII] line, the increase in the ionization parameter is accompanied by a reduction in the photoelectric heating efficiency and the inability of the line to track the increase in the FUV radiation field as galaxies become more compact and luminous. In the central $\sim$kiloparsec regions of AGN galaxies we observe a significant increase in the [OI] 63 $\mu$m/[CII] line ratio; the AGN impact on the line-to-FIR ratios fades on global scales. Based on extinction-insensitive metallicity measurements of LIRGs we confirm that they lie below the mass-metallicity relation, but the offset is smaller than those reported in studies that use optical-based metal abundances. Using new APEX and JCMT spectroscopy of the CO 2-1 line, we undertake a controlled study of cold molecular gas in moderately luminous Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and inactive galaxies from the Luminous Local AGN with Matched Analogs (LLAMA) survey. We use spatially resolved infrared photometry of the LLAMA galaxies from 2MASS, WISE, IRAS & Herschel, corrected for nuclear emission using multi-component spectral energy distribution (SED) fits, to examine the dust-reprocessed star-formation rates (SFRs), molecular gas fractions and star formation efficiencies (SFEs) over their central 1 - 3 kpc. We find that the gas fractions and central SFEs of both active and inactive galaxies are similar when controlling for host stellar mass and morphology (Hubble type). The equivalent central molecular gas depletion times are consistent with the discs of normal spiral galaxies in the local Universe. Despite energetic arguments that the AGN in LLAMA should be capable of disrupting the observable cold molecular gas in their central environments, our results indicate that nuclear radiation only couples weakly with this phase. We find a mild preference for obscured AGN to contain higher amounts of central molecular gas, which suggests a connection between AGN obscuration and the gaseous environment of the nucleus. Systems with depressed SFEs are not found among the LLAMA AGN. ERIS is an instrument that will both extend and enhance the fundamental diffraction limited imaging and spectroscopy capability for the VLT. It will replace two instruments that are now being maintained beyond their operational lifetimes, combine their functionality on a single focus, provide a new wavefront sensing module that makes use of the facility Adaptive Optics System, and considerably improve their performance. The instrument will be competitive with respect to JWST in several regimes, and has outstanding potential for studies of the Galactic Center, exoplanets, and high redshift galaxies. ERIS had its final design review in 2017, and is expected to be on sky in 2020. Context. η Car is one of the most intriguing luminous blue variables in the Galaxy. Observations and models of the X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, and infrared emission suggest a central binary in a highly eccentric orbit with a 5.54 yr period residing in its core. 2D and 3D radiative transfer and hydrodynamic simulations predict a primary with a dense and slow stellar wind that interacts with the faster and lower density wind of the secondary. The wind-wind collision scenario suggests that the secondary’s wind penetrates the primary’s wind creating a low-density cavity in it, with dense walls where the two winds interact. However, the morphology of the cavity and its physical properties are not yet fully constrained. Aims. We aim to trace the inner ∼5–50 au structure of η Car’s wind-wind interaction, as seen through Brγ and, for the first time, through the He I 2s-2p line. Methods. We have used spectro-interferometric observations with the K-band beam-combiner GRAVITY at the VLTI. The analyses of the data include (i) parametrical model-fitting to the interferometric observables, (ii) a CMFGEN model of the source’s spectrum, and (iii) interferometric image reconstruction. Results. Our geometrical modeling of the continuum data allows us to estimate its FWHM angular size close to 2 mas and an elongation ratio ϵ = 1.06 ± 0.05 over a PA = 130° ± 20°. Our CMFGEN modeling of the spectrum helped us to confirm that the role of the secondary should be taken into account to properly reproduce the observed Brγ and He I lines. Chromatic images across the Brγ line reveal a southeast arc-like feature, possibly associated to the hot post-shocked winds flowing along the cavity wall. The images of the He I 2s-2p line served to constrain the 20 mas (∼50 au) structure of the line-emitting region. The observed morphology of He I suggests that the secondary is responsible for the ionized material that produces the line profile. Both the Brγ and the He I 2s-2p maps are consistent with previous hydrodynamical models of the colliding wind scenario. Future dedicated simulations together with an extensive interferometric campaign are necessary to refine our constraints on the wind and stellar parameters of the binary, which finally will help us predict the evolutionary path of η Car.

MICADO will enable the ELT to perform diffraction limited near-infrared observations at first light. The instrument's capabilities focus on imaging (including astrometric and high contrast) as well as single object spectroscopy. This contribution looks at how requirements from the observing modes have driven the instrument design and functionality. Using examples from specific science cases, and making use of the data simulation tool, an outline is presented of what we can expect the instrument to achieve., Comment: Proc SPIE 10702. Herschel/PACS observations of 29 local (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies, including both starburst and active galactic nucleus (AGN) dominated sources as diagnosed in the mid-infrared/optical, show that the equivalent width of the absorbing OH 65 μm Π_(3/2) J = 9/2-7/2 line (W_(eq)(OH65)) with lower level energy E_(low) ≈ 300 K, is anticorrelated with the [C II]158 μm line to far-infrared luminosity ratio, and correlated with the far-infrared luminosity per unit gas mass and with the 60-to-100 μm far-infrared color. While all sources are in the active L_(IR)/M_(H2) > 50L_☉/M_☉ mode as derived from previous CO line studies, the OH65 absorption shows a bimodal distribution with a discontinuity at L_(FIR)/M_(H2) ≈ 100 L_☉/M_☉. In the most buried sources, OH65 probes material partially responsible for the silicate 9.7 μm absorption. Combined with observations of the OH 71 μm Π_(1/2) J = 7/2-5/2 doublet (E_(low) ≈ 415 K), radiative transfer models characterized by the equivalent dust temperature, T_(dust), and the continuum optical depth at 100 μm, τ_(100), indicate that strong [C_(II)]158 μm deficits are associated with far-IR thick (τ_(100) ≳ 0.7, N_H ≳ 10^(24) cm^(–2)), warm (T_(dust) ≳ 60 K) structures where the OH 65 μm absorption is produced, most likely in circumnuclear disks/tori/cocoons. With their high L_(FIR)/M_(H2) ratios and columns, the presence of these structures is expected to give rise to strong [C_(II)] deficits. W_(eq)(OH65) probes the fraction of infrared luminosity arising from these compact/warm environments, which is ≳ 30%-50% in sources with high W_(eq)(OH65). Sources with high W_(eq)(OH65) have surface densities of both L_(IR) and M_(H2) higher than inferred from the half-light (CO or UV/optical) radius, tracing coherent structures that represent the most buried/active stage of (circum)nuclear starburst-AGN co-evolution.

Using integral field spectroscopy we investigate the kinematic properties of 35 massive centrally-dense and compact star-forming galaxies (${\log{\overline{M}_*}}=11.1$, $\log{(\Sigma_\mathrm{1kpc})}>9.5$, $\log{(M_\ast/r_e^{1.5})}>10.3$) at $z\sim0.7-3.7$ within the KMOS$^\mathrm{3D}$survey. We spatially resolve 23 compact star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and find that the majority are dominated by rotational motions with velocities ranging from {$95-500$ km s$^{-1}$}. The range of rotation velocities is reflected in a similar range of integrated H$\alpha$ linewidths, $75-400$ km s$^{-1}$, consistent with the kinematic properties of mass-matched extended galaxies from the full KMOS$^\mathrm{3D}$ sample. The fraction of compact SFGs that are classified as `rotation-dominated' or `disk-like' also mirrors the fractions of the full KMOS$^\mathrm{3D}$ sample. We show that integrated line-of-sight gas velocity dispersions from KMOS$^\mathrm{3D}$ are best approximated by a linear combination of their rotation and turbulent velocities with a lesser but still significant contribution from galactic scale winds. The H$\alpha$ exponential disk sizes of compact SFGs are on average $2.5\pm0.2$ kpc, $1-2\times$ the continuum sizes, in agreement with previous work. The compact SFGs have a $1.4\times$ higher AGN incidence than the full KMOS$^\mathrm{3D}$ sample at fixed stellar mass with average AGN fraction of 76\%. Given their high and centrally concentrated stellar masses as well as stellar to dynamical mass ratios close to unity, the compact SFGs are likely to have low molecular gas fractions and to quench on a short time scale unless replenished with inflowing gas. We present Herschel PACS observations of the [C II] 158 μm emission line in a sample of 24 intermediate mass (9 < log M_*/M_⊙ < 10) and low metallicity (0.4 < Z/Z_⊙ < 1.0) galaxies from the xCOLD GASS survey. In combination with IRAM CO (1−0) measurements, we establish scaling relations between integrated and molecular region L_([CII])/L_(CO (1–0)) ratios as a function of integrated galaxy properties. A Bayesian analysis reveals that only two parameters, metallicity and offset from the main sequence, Δ(MS), are needed to quantify variations in the luminosity ratio; metallicity describes the total dust content available to shield CO from UV radiation, while Δ(MS) describes the strength of this radiation field. We connect the L_([CII])/L_(CO (1–0)) ratio to the CO-to-H_2 conversion factor and find a multivariate conversion function, which can be used up to z ∼ 2.5. This function depends primarily on metallicity, with a second-order dependence on Δ(MS). We apply this to the full xCOLD GASS and PHIBSS1 surveys and investigate molecular gas scaling relations. We find a flattening of the relation between gas mass fraction and stellar mass at log M_* < 10.0. While the molecular gas depletion time varies with sSFR, it is mostly independent of mass, indicating that the low L_(CO)/SFR ratios long observed in low-mass galaxies are entirely due to photodissociation of CO and not to an enhanced star formation efficiency.

We exploit the deep resolved Halpha kinematic data from the KMOS^3D and SINS/zC-SINF surveys to examine the largely unexplored outer disk kinematics of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) out to the peak of cosmic star formation. Our sample contains 101 SFGs representative of the more massive (9.3 < log(M*/Msun) < 11.5) main sequence population at 0.6~0.05) in combination with a sizeable level of pressure support in the outer disk. These findings are in agreement with recent studies demonstrating that star-forming disks at high redshift are strongly baryon dominated within the disk scale, and furthermore suggest that pressure gradients caused by large turbulent gas motions are present even in their outer disks. We demonstrate that these results are largely independent of our model assumptions such as the presence of a central stellar bulge, the effect of adiabatic contraction at fixed m_d, and variations in the concentration parameter., Comment: Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

International audience; We observe the high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) BP Cru using interferometry in the near-infrared K band with VLTI/GRAVITY. Continuum visibilities are at most partially resolved, consistent with the predicted size of the hypergiant. Differential visibility amplitude (${\rm{\Delta }}| V| \sim 5 \% $) and phase (${\rm{\Delta }}\phi \sim 2^\circ $) signatures are observed across the He i $2.059\,\mu {\rm{m}}$ and Brγ lines, the latter seen strongly in emission, unusual for the donor star’s spectral type. For a baseline $B\sim 100$ m, the differential phase rms $\sim 0\buildrel{\circ}\over{.} 2$ corresponds to an astrometric precision of $\sim 2\,\mu \mathrm{as}$. We generalize expressions for image centroid displacements and variances in the marginally resolved limit of interferometry to spectrally resolved data, and use them to derive model-independent properties of the emission such as its asymmetry, extension, and strong wavelength dependence. We propose geometric models based on an extended and distorted wind and/or a high-density gas stream, which has long been predicted to be present in this system. The observations show that optical interferometry is now able to resolve HMXBs at the spatial scale where accretion takes place, and therefore to probe the effects of the gravitational and radiation fields of the compact object on its environment.

We present an analysis of far–infrared (FIR) [CII] and [OI] fine structure line and continuum observations obtained with Herschel/PACS, and ^(12)CO(1–0) observations obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer, of Lyman-break analogs (LBAs) at z ~ 0.2. The principal aim of this work is to determine the typical interstellar medium (ISM) properties of z ~ 1−2 main sequence (MS) galaxies, with stellar masses between 10^(9.5) and 10^(11)M⊙, which are currently not easily detectable in all these lines even with ALMA and NOEMA. We perform PDR modeling and apply different infared diagnostics to derive the main physical parameters of the far-infrared (FIR)-emitting gas and dust and we compare the derived ISM properties to those of galaxies on and above the MS at different redshifts. We find that the ISM properties of LBAs are quite extreme (low gas temperature and high density and thermal pressure) with respect to those found in local normal spirals and more active local galaxies. LBAs have no [CII] deficit despite having the high specific star formation rates (sSFRs) typical of starbursts. Although LBAs lie above the local MS, we show that their ISM properties are more similar to those of high-redshift MS galaxies than of local galaxies above the main sequence. This data set represents an important reference for planning future ALMA [CII] observations of relatively low-mass MS galaxies at the epoch of the peak of the cosmic star formation.

We exploit the deep and extended far infrared data sets (at 70, 100 and 160 um) of the Herschel GTO PACS Evolutionary Probe (PEP) Survey, in combination with the HERschel Multi tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES) data at 250, 350 and 500 um, to derive the evolution of the restframe 35 um, 60 um, 90 um, and total infrared (IR) luminosity functions (LFs) up to z~4. We detect very strong luminosity evolution for the total IR LF combined with a density evolution. In agreement with previous findings, the IR luminosity density increases steeply to z~1, then flattens between z~1 and z~3 to decrease at z greater than 3. Galaxies with different SEDs, masses and sSFRs evolve in very different ways and this large and deep statistical sample is the first one allowing us to separately study the different evolutionary behaviours of the individual IR populations contributing to the IR luminosity density. Galaxies occupying the well established SFR/stellar mass main sequence (MS) are found to dominate both the total IR LF and luminosity density at all redshifts, with the contribution from off MS sources (0.6 dex above MS) being nearly constant (~20% of the total IR luminosity density) and showing no significant signs of increase with increasing z over the whole 0.8, Comment: 32 pages, 20 figures, 9 tables. We report high quality near-infrared spectroscopy of 12 ultra-luminous infrared galaxy mergers (ULIRGs). Our new VLT and Keck data provide ~0.5" resolution, stellar and gas kinematics of these galaxies most of which are compact systems in the last merger stages. We confirm that ULIRG mergers are 'ellipticals-in-formation'. Random motions dominate their stellar dynamics, but significant rotation is common. Gas and stellar dynamics are decoupled in most systems. ULIRGs fall on or near the fundamental plane of hot stellar systems, and especially on its less evolution sensitive, r(eff)-sigma projection. The ULIRG velocity dispersion distribution, their location in the fundamental plane and their distribution of v(rot)*sin(i)/sigma closely resemble those of intermediate mass (~L*), elliptical galaxies with moderate rotation. As a group ULIRGs do not resemble giant ellipticals with large cores and little rotation. Our results are in good agreement with other recent studies indicating that disky ellipticals with compact cores or cusps can form through dissipative mergers of gas rich, disk galaxies while giant ellipticals with large cores have a different formation history., Comment: submitted to ApJ

Ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are probably the local analogues of a major mode of galaxy formation in the early universe. Here we give a brief progress report on our ongoing programme to study the nature and evolution of ULIRGs. Our near-IR imaging of a large sample of these highly disturbed merger systems provides a data base of morphological parameters like tidal features or projected separation of the nuclei. Together with ISO Mid-IR spectroscopy these morphological parameters allow us to explore the merger dynamics and evolution of ULIRGs as they may progress from starburst to buried AGN to exposed QSO. We find that the fraction of ULIRGs predominantly powered by AGNs increases with luminosity above ~ 3 x 1012 L ⊙, but that there is no obvious trend for ULIRGs to be more AGN-like with more advanced merger phase.

We report the results of near-infrared VLT-ISAAC spectroscopy of a sample of 12 galaxies at z = 0.4-1.4, drawn from the ISOCAM survey of the Hubble Deep Field South. We find that the rest frame R-band spectra of the ISOCAM galaxies resemble those of powerful dust-enshrouded starbursts. Halpha emission is detected in 11 out of 12 objects down to a flux limit of 7x10^(-17) erg/cm^2/s, corresponding to a luminosity limit of 10^41 erg/s at z = 0.6, (for an Ho = 50 and Omega = 0.3 cosmology). From the Halpha luminosities in these galaxies we derive estimates of the star formation rate in the range 2--50 Mo/yr for stellar masses 1--100 Mo. The raw Halpha-based star formation rates are an order of magnitude or more lower than SFR(FIR) estimates based on ISOCAM LW3 fluxes. If the Halpha emission is corrected for extinction the median offset is reduced to a factor of 3. The sample galaxies are part of a new population of optically faint but infrared--luminous active starburst galaxies, which are characterized by an extremely high rate of evolution with redshift up to z~1.5 and expected to contribute significantly to the cosmic far-IR extragalactic background.

We use high spectral resolution (R > 8000) data covering 3800-13000\r{A} to study the physical conditions of the broad line region (BLR) of nine nearby Seyfert 1 galaxies. Up to six broad HI lines are present in each spectrum. A comparison - for the first time using simultaneous optical to near-infrared observations - to photoionisation calculations with our devised simple scheme yields the extinction to the BLR at the same time as determining the density and photon flux, and hence distance from the nucleus, of the emitting gas. This points to a typical density for the HI emitting gas of 10$^{11}$cm$^{-3}$ and shows that a significant amount of this gas lies at regions near the dust sublimation radius, consistent with theoretical predictions. We also confirm that in many objects the line ratios are far from case B, the best-fit intrinsic broad-line H$\alpha$/H$\beta$ ratios being in the range 2.5-6.6 as derived with our photoionization modeling scheme. The extinction to the BLR, based on independent estimates from HI and HeII lines, is A$_V$ $\le$ 3 for Seyfert 1-1.5s, while Seyfert 1.8-1.9s have A$_V$ in the range 4-8. A comparison of the extinction towards the BLR and narrow line region (NLR) indicates that the structure obscuring the BLR exists on scales smaller than the NLR. This could be the dusty torus, but dusty nuclear spirals or filaments could also be responsible. The ratios between the X-ray absorbing column N$_H$ and the extinction to the BLR are consistent with the Galactic gas-to-dust ratio if N$_H$ variations are considered., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We discuss the dense molecular gas in central regions of nearby Seyfert galaxies, and report new arcsec resolution observations of HCN(1-0) and HCO$^+$(1-0) for 3 objects. In NGC 3079 the lines show complex profiles as a result of self-absorption and saturated continuum absorption. H$^{13}$CN reveals the continuum absorption profile, with a peak close to the galaxy's systemic velocity that traces disk rotation, and a second feature with a blue wing extending to $-350$km s$^{-1}$ that most likely traces a nuclear outflow. The morphological and spectral properties of the emission lines allow us to constrain the dense gas dynamics. We combine our kinematic analysis for these 3 objects, as well as another with archival data, with a previous comparable analysis of 4 other objects, to create a sample of 8 Seyferts. In 7 of these, the emission line kinematics imply thick disk structures on radial scales of $\sim$100pc, suggesting such structures are a common occurrence. We find a relation between the circumnuclear LHCN and Mdyn that can be explained by a gas fraction of 10% and a conversion factor {\alpha}HCN $\sim$ 10 between gas mass and HCN luminosity. Finally, adopting a different perspective to probe the physical properties of the gas around AGN, we report on an analysis of molecular line ratios which indicates that the clouds in this region are not self-gravitating., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

MICADO will equip the E-ELT with a first light capability for diffraction limited imaging at near-infrared wavelengths. The instrument's observing modes focus on various flavours of imaging, including astrometric, high contrast, and time resolved. There is also a single object spectroscopic mode optimised for wavelength coverage at moderately high resolution. This contribution provides an overview of the key functionality of the instrument, outlining the scientific rationale for its observing modes. The interface between MICADO and the adaptive optics system MAORY that feeds it is summarised. SPIFFI is an AO-fed integral field spectrograph operating as part of SINFONI on the VLT, which will be upgraded and reused as SPIFFIER in the new VLT instrument ERIS. In January 2016, we used new technology developments to perform an early upgrade to optical subsystems in the SPIFFI instrument so ongoing scientific programs can make use of enhanced performance before ERIS arrives in 2020. We report on the upgraded components and the performance of SPIFFI after the upgrade, including gains in throughput and spatial and spectral resolution. We show results from re-commissioning, highlighting the potential for scientific programs to use the capabilities of the upgraded SPIFFI. Finally, we discuss the additional upgrades for SPIFFIER which will be implemented before it is integrated into ERIS., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. We use the first systematic data sets of CO molecular line emission in z~1-3 normal star forming galaxies for a comparison of the dependence of galaxy-averaged star formation rates on molecular gas masses at low and high redshifts, and in different galactic environments. Although the current high-z samples are still small and biased toward the luminous and massive tail of the actively star-forming 'main-sequence', a fairly clear picture is emerging. Independent of whether galaxy integrated quantities or surface densities are considered, low- and high-z SFG galaxy populations appear to follow similar molecular gas-star formation relations with slopes 1.1 to 1.2. The gas-depletion time scale in these SFGs grows from 0.5 Gyrs at z~2 to 1.5 Gyrs at z~0. Because star formation depletion times are significantly smaller than the Hubble time at all redshifts sampled, star formation rates and gas fractions are set by the balance between gas accretion from the halo and stellar feedback. In contrast, very luminous gas rich major mergers at both low-z and high-z produce on average 4 to10 times more far-infrared luminosity per unit gas mass. Only some fraction of this difference can be explained by uncertainties in gas-mass or luminosity estimators; much of it must be intrinsic. The most likely interpretation is that the star formation relation is driven by global dynamical effects. For a given mass, the more compact merger systems produce stars more rapidly because their gas clouds are more compressed with shorter dynamical times, so that they churn more quickly through the available gas reservoir than the typical normal disk galaxies. When the dependence on galactic dynamical time scale is explicitly included, disk galaxies and mergers appear to follow similar gas to star-formation relations. The mergers may be forming stars at slightly higher efficiencies than the disks.

International audience; We present new observations of the nuclear star cluster in the central parsec of the Galaxy with the adaptive optics assisted, integral field spectrograph SINFONI on the ESO/VLT. Our work allows the spectroscopic detection of early- and late-type stars to mK >= 16, more than 2 mag deeper than our previous data sets. Our observations result in a total sample of 177 bona fide early-type stars. We find that most of these Wolf Rayet (WR), O-, and B-stars reside in two strongly warped disks between 0farcs8 and 12'' from Sgr A*, as well as a central compact concentration (the S-star cluster) centered on Sgr A*. The later type B-stars (mK >15) in the radial interval between 0farcs8 and 12'' seem to be in a more isotropic distribution outside the disks. The observed dearth of late-type stars in the central few arcseconds is puzzling, even when allowing for stellar collisions. The stellar mass function of the disk stars is extremely top heavy with a best-fit power law of dN/dm vprop m -0.45± 0.3. WR/O-stars were formed in situ in a single star formation event ~6 Myr ago, this mass function probably reflects the initial mass function (IMF). The mass functions of the S-stars inside 0farcs8 and of the early-type stars at distances beyond 12'' are compatible with a standard Salpeter/Kroupa IMF (best-fit power law of dN/dm vprop m -2.15± 0.3).
