Understanding the combined effects of multi-parasite infections on their hosts is necessary for documenting parasite impacts and is particularly important for developing effective management strategies for economically important organisms. The white shrimp Penaeus setiferus supports important recreational and commercial fisheries along the southeastern and Gulf coasts of the United States and occupies an important ecological niche in estuarine and offshore habitats throughout these regions. The goal of this study was to identify and assess ontogenetic and spatial variation in white shrimp parasite communities and their relation to shrimp health. We used a series of trawl surveys in tidal creek and open water habitats of an estuary in the southeastern USA to collect and identify parasites of white shrimp using morphological and DNA sequencing techniques. Parasite communities in white shrimp were composed of organisms belonging to 6 classes: Conoidasida (gregarines), Oligohymenophorea (apostome and sessilid ciliates), Microsporea (meiodihaplophasids), Chromadorea (rhabditids), Cestoda (cyclophyllideans, lecanocephalideans and trypanorhynchs) and Trematoda (plagiorchiids). Parasite communities differed significantly among white shrimp life stages and localities. Furthermore, the health condition known as black gill occurred in some shrimp and was significantly related to parasite community structure. Infection metrics for the apostome ciliate Hyalophysa lynni, the trypanorhynch larvae Prochristianella sp. and the rhabditid larvae Hysterothylacium sp. were significantly different between shrimp exhibiting and not exhibiting black gill. These results highlight the importance of understanding parasite communities and the potential interactive effects of multiple parasite infections on shrimp health.

The Atlantic Blue CrabCallinectes sapidusis an ecologically- and economically-important species that supports one of the highest valued commercial fisheries in coastal South Carolina, USA. Researchers at the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources conduct multiple surveys to monitor the status of the Atlantic Blue Crab using a variety of gear configurations. Demographic characterizations, however, can often be influenced by sampling gear-related biases. We compared blue crab sex ratios between passive, pot-based, sampling and active, trawl-based, sampling across three estuaries in the fall and for year-round sampling in a single estuary. For fall sampling, the percent of males in pots was 20.1% higher than values observed for trawl-based sampling, while an overall male bias of 22.7% was observed for year-round sampling; however, this bias was only significant in certain months. Our findings suggest that while different sampling gears may offer their own advantages, such as greater suitability to effectively sample specific habitats, the resulting characterizations of population demographics can differ among gear types. Recognizing gear related biases is important for ensuring that field surveys are representative of populations, particularly when sex-specific modeling approaches are used as part of stock assessments to determine population status.

For animals that develop externally, habitats where environmental conditions are optimal for embryonic development are sometimes assumed to represent the highest recruitment potential and thus support the majority of reproductive output for a species. However, organisms may spawn in areas considered sub-optimal for embryonic development. Thus, understanding spawning habitat selection decisions and their potential impacts on recruitment and ecological interactions is necessary for predicting population status and identifying critical habitats to inform sustainable conservation decisions and effective management approaches. The American horseshoe crab,Limulus polyphemus, is ecologically, economically, and biomedically important. Females come ashore to spawn in the sediment where eggs develop for 2 – 4 weeks. Horseshoe crabs have been thought to primarily use sandy beach habitat for spawning in part because this habitat has been shown to be optimal for embryonic development. Horseshoe crab eggs on sandy beaches are an essential part of the diet of many organisms, including shorebirds such as therufared knot which requires the eggs to fuel their migration to arctic spawning grounds. While horseshoe crabs have been observed spawning in alternative habitats such as salt marshes and peat beds, this behavior has been assumed to be rare and non-adaptive. In this study, we compare the use of beach and alternative habitats by horseshoe crabs for spawning. To do so, we conducted adult horseshoe crab spawning surveys and horseshoe crab egg surveys in beach andSpartina-dominated salt marsh alternative habitats in South Carolina, Connecticut, and New Hampshire, U.S.A. While spawning horseshoe crabs were more likely to be observed on beach habitats than in alternative habitats, potentially due to logistical constraints surveying alternative habitats, we found similar densities of spawning horseshoe crabs in both habitat types. We also tended to find more eggs in alternative habitats than on beaches. Taken together, these results suggest that alternative habitats likely represent a significant source of horseshoe crab spawning activity and recruitment that had not previously been quantified. We recommend this information be incorporated into horseshoe crab population assessments, habitat protections, and more directed research at understanding variability in habitat-specific horseshoe crab spawning and its relationship to migratory shorebirds.

Barnacles are sessile suspension feeders whose feeding efficiency and behavior is largely determined by the movement of water through their environment. Barnacles expend energy to feed actively in environments with low flow velocity, whereas they may feed passively at higher flow velocities, which is more efficient than active feeding. Many intertidal barnacles have been shown to switch between active and passive feeding modes as water velocities change, but little is known about the behavior of epibiotic species attached to mobile hosts, which are exposed to more consistent feeding currents. To assess the response of epibiotic barnacles to flow, laboratory-reared sea-turtle barnacles, Chelonibia testudinaria (Linnaeus, 1758), were subjected to a wide range of water velocities in both the presence and absence of food particles. Their behaviors were video-recorded and categorized using an automated behavior recognition algorithm compiled in R. Individuals of C. testudinaria only displayed passive feeding behavior, but did not feed at lowest test velocities. This species fed most at flow velocities between 25 cm s–1 and 40 cm s–1 (linear mixed effects model, F = 19.30, P < 0.001), a range that correlates well with the average swimming speed of two common host species, the loggerhead and green sea turtles, on which C. testudinaria resides. Chelonibia testudinaria displayed longer average feeding durations when food particles were absent than when food was abundant (linear mixed effects model, F = 11.76, P = 0.001), a result that is in line with the expectations of optimal foraging theory for suspension-feeding invertebrates. Lack of active feeding in this species may have evolved following the establishment of its epibiotic nature and may make this obligate epibiotic species entirely reliant on its hosts’ movements to provide a feeding current. This is the only barnacle species known to not facultatively switch between active and passive feeding modes.

Lead (Pb) is a naturally occurring, highly toxic metal that has adverse effects on children across a range of exposure levels. Limited screening programs leave many children at risk for chronic low-level lead exposure and there is little understanding of what factors may be used to identify children at risk. We characterize the distribution of blood lead levels (BLLs) in children aged 0–72 months and their associations with sociodemographic and area-level variables. Data from the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Healthy Homes for Lead Prevention Program surveillance database was used to describe the distribution of BLLs in children living in the metro Atlanta area from 2010 to 2018. Residential addresses were geocoded, and “Hotspot” analyses were performed to determine if BLLs were spatially clustered. Multilevel regression models were used to identify factors associated with clinical BBLs (≥5 µg/dL) and sub-clinical BLLs (2 to &lt, 5 µg/dL). From 2010 to 2018, geographically defined hotspots for both clinical and sub-clinical BLLs diffused from the city-central area of Atlanta into suburban areas. Multilevel regression analysis revealed non-Medicaid insurance, the proportion of renters in a given geographical area, and proportion of individuals with a GED/high school diploma as predictors that distinguish children with BLLs 2 to &lt, 5 µg/dL from those with lower (&lt, 2 µg/dL) or higher (≥5 µg/dL) BLLs. Over half of the study children had BLLs between 2 and 5 µg/dL, a range that does not currently trigger public health measures but that could result in adverse developmental outcomes if ignored.

The white shrimp fisheries in South Carolina and Georgia, USA, have undergone substantial reductions in commercial landings over the past few decades. These declines are associated with reduced commercial effort, shifting climate patterns, and disease outbreaks. For example, recent increases in the occurrence of gill melanization, also known as black gill, have led to the suggestion that this epidemic is a major contributor to reduced shrimp abundance in the region. The goal of this study was to assess long-term patterns and drivers of black gill, and its effects on white shrimp abundance, particularly during the fall, when most of the commercial harvest of white shrimp in this region has historically occurred. Data were compiled for fishery-independent (2002–2017) metrics of white shrimp abundance and black gill prevalence from seven estuaries along the South Carolina and Georgia coasts. Phenology of black gill was variable among years, but mean black gill prevalence was significantly related to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and El Nino–Southern Oscillation climate indices. These analyses show that the prevalence of black gill is sensitive to large-scale fluctuations in climate patterns.

BACKGROUND: Academic medical centers have expanded their inpatient medicine services with advanced practice clinicians (APCs) or nonteaching hospitalists in response to patient volumes, residency work hour restrictions, and recently, COVID-19. Reports of clinical outcomes, cost, and resource utilization differ among inpatient team structures. OBJECTIVE: Directly compare outcomes among resident, APC, and solo hospitalist inpatient general medicine teams. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study using multivariable analysis adjusted for time of admission, interhospital transfer, and comorbidities that compares clinical outcomes, cost, and resource utilization. SUBJECTS: Patients 18 years or older discharged from an inpatient medicine service between July 2015 and July 2018 (N = 12,716). MAIN MEASURES: Length of stay (LOS), 30-day readmission, inpatient mortality, normalized total direct cost, discharge time, and consultation utilization. KEY RESULTS: Resident teams admitted fewer patients at night (32.0%; P < .001) than did APC (49.5%) and hospitalist (48.6%) teams. APCs received nearly 4% more outside transfer patients (P = .015). Hospitalists discharged patients 26 minutes earlier than did residents (mean hours after midnight [95% CI], 14.58 [14.44-14.72] vs 15.02 [14.97-15.08]). Adjusted consult utilization was 15% higher for APCs (adjusted mean consults per admission [95% CI], 1.00 [0.96-1.03]) and 8% higher for residents (0.93 [0.90-0.95]) than it was for hospitalists (0.85 [0.80-0.90]). No differences in LOS, readmission, mortality, or cost were observed between the teams. CONCLUSION: We observed similar costs, LOS, 30-day readmission, and mortality among hospitalist, APC, and resident teams. Our results suggest clinical outcomes are not significantly affected by team structure. The addition of APC or hospitalist teams represent safe and effective alternatives to traditional inpatient resident teams.

The impacts of non-native species on native ecosystems can be substantial, and effective management strategies often require a comprehensive understanding of species biology and ecology within the invaded range. The island apple snail Pomacea maculata is an invasive species known to alter the structure and function of wetland habitats. Researchers first reported island apple snails in the United States in Tallahassee, FL, in 2002 and subsequently observed this species in South Carolina (SC) in 2008. The objectives of this study were to document the spatial distribution, phenology and life history, and habitat preference of island apple snails, as well as its association with co-occurring gastropods in SC. Populations were surveyed in stormwater retention ponds throughout coastal SC, where surveyors documented the numbers of live specimens, sex ratios, and the substrate types on which island apple snails deposited egg clutches. The high abundances and year-round presence of egg clutches observed in this study indicate that these populations are successfully reproducing throughout the year, although egg clutch abundance was positively correlated with air temperature. Overall, this study found higher numbers of female P. maculata than males, and that females preferred to lay egg clutches on culverts as opposed to other available substrates. In addition to P. maculata, four other non-native gastropods were documented in stormwater retention ponds. Among these, Melanoides tuberculata and Pyrgophorus parvulus are potential vectors for multiple human diseases and had never before been reported in SC. Understanding the current distribution and life history traits of P. maculata is important for determining the potential for further spread and providing opportunities to protect healthy, natural ecosystems from the impacts of non-native species.

Little is known about the life history of Labidesthes vanhyningi (Stout Silverside) in the Mobile Basin. We made monthly collections of Stout Silverside from Lake Tuscaloosa in Northport, AL, from September 2011 to September 2012. Emergence of young-of-the-year occurred in the months of September, October, January, and May. Reproductive investment, calculated using a gonadosomatic index (GSI), was observed from March to December. We also documented evidence for internal fertilization by Stout Silverside in the Mobile Basin. Dietary analysis showed cladocerans were the numerically dominant prey item. These life-history data provide information to natural resource-management agencies about Stout Silverside in the Mobile Basin, where the species is currently under threat from invading Menidia audens (Mississippi Silverside).

Parasites can kill hosts directly, but also indirectly, by enhancing susceptibility to environmental factors and biotic interactions. In the United States South Atlantic Bight region of the northwest Atlantic Ocean, white shrimp ( Penaeus setiferus ) support a substantial commercial fishery and are also valuable prey for many marine and estuarine species. Since the late 1990s, a condition known as black gill has been observed in penaeid shrimp in the South Atlantic Bight. In this region, black gill has been linked to an apostome ciliate that elicits an innate immune response in shrimp, manifested through the melanization of gill tissues, which impedes respiratory functions and hemolymph ion regulation. The objective of this study was to determine if black gill subjects shrimp to higher rates of predation by red drum ( Sciaenops ocellatus ), spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus), and blue crab ( Callinectes sapidus ). A series of simultaneous prey choice mesocosm experiments was conducted, during which single-species predators were able to consume shrimp that were both symptomatic and asymptomatic of black gill over a four-hour period. Predator species were 1.4 to 3.0 times more likely to consume symptomatic shrimp than asymptomatic shrimp. The hinderance of shrimp physiology and escape responses due to gill melanization likely increases the vulnerability of shrimp to predation. This study emphasizes that mortality from parasitic infections is not always direct and that black gill may have a significant impact on penaeid shrimp through secondary, or indirect, mortality.

While ephemeral wetlands contribute significantly to regional freshwater biodiversity, their role in supporting threatened and imperiled species of crayfish is not widely recognized. As the center of global crayfish biodiversity, the southeastern United States (US), and the state of Alabama (AL) in particular, are important focal areas where information is needed to develop understanding of habitat constraints determining the distributions of crayfish species. To this end, we documented crayfish species associated with ephemeral wetlands and associated wetland habitats that have been traditionally under sampled. Fifteen species of crayfish were documented among 96 survey sites. This assemblage included three Alabama state-listed Priority 1 species [Cambarellus diminutus Hobbs, Fallicambarus burrisi Fitzpatrick, Procambarus viaeviridis (Faxon)] and five Priority 2 species [Hobbseus prominens (Hobbs), Orconectes lancifer (Hagan), Procambarus evermanni (Faxon), P. leconti (Hagan), P. marthae Hobbs]. An undescribed species of Cambarellus (“sp. A”) was also documented, and will presumably be eventually designated a Priority 1 species in Alabama due to its restricted distribution and apparent endemism. Ten species of crayfish were documented from ephemeral wetlands, including four Priority 1 and 2 species [Cambarellus sp. A (presumed Priority 1 species), H. prominens, P. marthae, P. viaeviridis]. Most populations of Priority 1 and 2 species we documented are within the 100-year floodplain of the Black Warrior River. Ephemeral wetlands and associated wetland habitats within the floodplains of large rivers thus appear to be vital habitat for threatened and imperiled crayfish in Alabama. Our results suggest that future crayfish surveys should include sampling of these important but often overlooked habitats.

As part of a study of aquatic faunal community changes along riverine-lacustrine transition zones upstream of Lewis Smith Reservoir in northwest Alabama, USA, we collected crayfish from 60 sites in the Sipsey Fork, Brushy Creek, and selected tributaries (Black Warrior River system). After finding two unexpected and possibly-introduced crayfish species, we expanded our investigation of crayfish distributions to include crayfish obtained from stomachs of black bass (Micropterus spp.) caught at seven sites in the reservoir. To explore what crayfish species were in the drainage historically, we examined museum databases as well as stomach and intestinal contents of a variety of preserved fishes that were caught in the Sipsey Fork and Brushy Creek drainages upstream of the reservoir in the early 1990’s. Of the seven crayfish species collected, one, Orconectes (Procericambarus) sp. nr ronaldi, was not previously reported from Alabama, and another, O. lancifer, was not reported from the Black Warrior River system prior to the study. Three are known or possibly introduced species. Upstream of the reservoir, the native species Cambarus obstipus, C. striatus, and O. validus were common. The same three species were found in fish collected in the 1990’s. Orconectes perfectus was found only in the reservoir but may be native to the drainage. Orconectes lancifer was in the reservoir and in stream reaches influenced by the reservoir. Evidence points to O. lancifer being introduced in the drainage, but this is uncertain. Orconectes sp. nr ronaldi was found in a relatively small portion of Brushy Creek and its tributaries, in both flowing and impounded habitats, and may be introduced. Orconectes virilis is introduced in Alabama and was found only in stomachs of fish collected in the reservoir.

SUMMARY 1. Significant changes in the timing of thawing and freezing, annual discharge and nutrient supply are anticipated for arctic river ecosystems due to climate warming. Our understanding of the effects of such changes, however, is poor. Since biofilms are both critical to ecosystem processes and subject to control by combinations of freezing dynamics, discharge and nutrient supply, the effects of climate warming on arctic river ecosystems may be substantial. 2. We studied biofilm accrual and metabolism in the Kuparuk River of Alaska with three objectives. First, we assessed biofilm activity during the open-water season, including the poorly known ‘shoulder seasons’ (periods shortly after the spring thaw and then before autumn freezing). Second, we assessed how discharge and freezing dynamics may affect temporal patterns in biofilm activity. Third, we assessed biofilm response to increases in PO 3 concentrations predicted as the climate warms. 3. Our study consisted of an upstream reference reach and a downstream treatment reach where H3PO4 was experimentally added for two years (2011–2012; ~0.3 lM increase). We used archived reference-reach data from 1983 to 2014 to assess discharge–chlorophyll relationships. 4. Mean biofilm gross primary production (GPP) in the reference reach during 2011 and 2012 was 15.4 2.2 (mean S.E.) and 13.4 2.5 mg C m 2 h 1 , respectively, with spring shoulder season values being significantly higher than the summer values that are more routinely measured. An analysis of a 31-year record from the reference reach revealed that biofilm chlorophyll biomass was significantly (R 2 = 0.39, P < 0.001) related to the discharge regime of the previous summer. This ‘legacy effect’ is attributable to bedfast ice within the river channel during winter that protects biofilms from scour during the spring thaw. Before–after-control–impact (BACI) analysis showed significant and positive PO 3 effects on mean biofilm chl-a biomass in the treatment reach. This treatment effect was associated with a parallel increase in GPP. 5. High biofilm activity in the Kuparuk River during the shoulder seasons indicates its potential significance to the energetics of arctic river ecosystems, particularly in the context of climate change. The related ‘legacy effect’ probably underlies the scope for rapid recovery of biofilm activity during the spring. Finally, increases in PO 3 at concentrations predicted as the climate warms are likely to result in increases in summer biofilm biomass and metabolism. Further studies of biofilm processes during the shoulder seasons, and how these are affected by shifts in discharge, freezing dynamics and nutrient supply, are required for a comprehensive understanding of the effects of climate warming on arctic river ecosystems.

Rapidly, increasing air temperatures across the Arctic are thawing permafrost and exposing vast quantities of organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus to microbial processing. Shifts in the absolute and relative supplies of these elements will likely alter patterns of ecosystem productivity and change the way carbon and nutrients are delivered from upland areas to surface waters such as rivers and lakes. The ultra-oligotrophic nature of surface waters across the Arctic renders these ecosystems particularly susceptible to changes in productivity and food web dynamics as permafrost thaw alters terrestrial-aquatic linkages. The objectives of this study were to evaluate decadal-scale patterns in surface water chemistry and assess potential implications of changing water chemistry to benthic organic matter and aquatic food webs. Data were collected from the upper Kuparuk River on the North Slope of Alaska by the U.S. National Science Foundation's Long-Term Ecological Research program during 1978-2014. Analyses of these data show increases in stream water alkalinity and cation concentrations consistent with signatures of permafrost thaw. Changes are also documented for discharge-corrected nitrate concentrations (+), discharge-corrected dissolved organic carbon concentrations (-), total phosphorus concentrations (-), and δ13 C isotope values of aquatic invertebrate consumers (-). These changes show that warming temperatures and thawing permafrost in the upland environment are leading to shifts in the supply of carbon and nutrients available to surface waters and consequently changing resources that support aquatic food webs. This demonstrates that physical, geochemical, and biological changes associated with warming permafrost are fundamentally altering linkages between upland and aquatic ecosystems in rapidly changing arctic environments.

Cambarellus (Pandicambarus) rotatus, new species, is a dwarf crayfish from floodplain swamps in the Tombigbee and Black Warrior river drainages of Greene, Hale, and Marengo counties, Alabama. The new species is morphologically most similar to Cambarellus (Pandicambarus) lesliei. They differ in a several morphological characters. Cambarellus rotatus, new species, has gonopods that are rotated mesially so that the terminal elements oppose each other, and they have a short C-shaped sperm groove. These are unique features among known species of Cambarellus.

The Arctic is currently experiencing changes in climate more rapid than in any other biome. This warming trend has resulted in significant abiotic changes to the seasonal patterns of freshwater ecosystems. Thorough inventories of freshwater insect communities are required to provide benchmarks for the detection of range shifts in response to a warming climate. Though statewide studies have been conducted for Trichoptera and Plecoptera, species accounts for these orders in Arctic Alaska have received relatively little attention. We surveyed Plecoptera and Trichoptera of Alaska's Arctic North Slope at a variety of habitat types over an 11-year period. We document new and historical collection records for 24 species of Plecoptera and 33 species of Trichoptera on Alaska's North Slope. Among these are 19 new North Slope records for Trichoptera (4 new state records) and 2 new North Slope records for Plecoptera. Imbalances in phosphorus (P) intake relative to demand negatively affect animal growth, but their consequences are less understood for vertebrates, in which bone represents a significant and potentially flexible pool of P. Flexibility in body-P content could buffer vertebrates from the effects of imbalances between P intake and demand, reducing the likelihood of a sharp stoichiometric “knife-edge” in the relationship between growth rate and diet-P level. We conducted a meta-analysis of published aquaculture experiments that tested effects of diet %P on fish growth rate (49 studies, 28 species) and body-P content (27 of the studies in the main data set, 20 species). Our meta-analysis revealed significant P limitation of growth, as well as significant negative effects of excess P on growth rate. Diet-P thresholds for these effects occurred at ecologically relevant levels (optimal diet-P of 1.2% ± 0.45%, mean ± SD, under experimental conditions of high ration). SUMMARY 1. Regimes of temperature and nutrient availability are undergoing rapid modification at global scales. Both temperature and nutrients can influence consumer physiology and growth via several mechanisms. We examined how temperature and the nutrient content of food interact to affect consumption, growth and body stoichiometry of a detritivorous consumer (the caddisfly Pycnopsyche gentilis). 2. In a 7-week growth study, P. gentilis larvae were reared at two different temperatures (5 and 10 °C) while fed conditioned red maple (Acer rubrum) litter at one of two stoichiometric qualities (manipulated by raising phosphorus supply in one litter conditioning treatment; Amb: mean litter P = 0.03%, mean litter N = 0.79%; Hi-P: mean litter P = 0.14%, mean litter N = 1.2%). 3. Temperature and litter quality had differential effects on bulk consumption, element-specific (N and P) consumption, growth and elemental body content of P. gentilis larvae. Temperature was the only factor affecting bulk feeding rates. Larvae in the Warm/Hi-P treatment had by far the highest growth rates; the negligible growth in the Cold/Amb treatment was increased by either higher temperature (Warm/Amb) or higher food quality (Cold/Hi-P). 4. Higher temperature had no effect on body P content in Hi-P treatments, but decreased body P content in the Amb treatments. Shifts in temperature and resource quality are both important components of global change and our results show that these factors can have interactive effects on detrital food webs, through which most primary production flows.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is considerably more common among adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) than in the general population and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. There is limited information on RLS in children with CKD. Failure to account for conditions that might mimic RLS can lead to overdiagnosis of this syndrome. In a prospective, cross-sectional study, RLS prevalence was compared between pediatric CKD patients and healthy children. RLS was assessed via a questionnaire that included exclusion of mimics. Sleep characteristics and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) were also assessed. Restless legs syndrome was more prevalent in CKD patients (n = 124) than in 85 normal children (15.3 vs. 5.9 %; p = 0.04). There was no significant association between RLS and CKD stage, CKD etiology, CKD duration, and dialysis or transplant status. Children with RLS were more likely to rate their sleep quality as fairly bad or very bad (41.2 vs. 8.8 %; p = 0.003) and report using sleep medications (42.1 vs. 14.7 %; p = 0.01). RLS was associated with lower HRQoL by parent report (p = 0.03). Only five of the 19 patients (26.3 %) with CKD and RLS had discussed RLS symptoms with a healthcare provider, and only one of these patients had been diagnosed with RLS prior to this study. The prevalence of RLS is increased in children with CKD and appears to be underdiagnosed. Systematic screening for RLS and sleep problems would therefore appear to be warranted in children with CKD.

In 2013 the process of developing an Orbital Debris and Satellite observation capability for the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope was initiated. This process involved the modification of various operational aspects of the observatory. After a year of implementing the modifications the observatory was capable of providing deep space observations of orbital debris and satellites in a queue based format. The telescope has been operating with this capability for the past 2.5 years and has generated terabytes of observational data on orbital debris and satellites that are in the GEO satellite belt distributed across the Pacific Ocean.

The intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF) autonomously responded to and promptly tiled the error region of the first gravitational wave event GW150914 to search for an optical counterpart. Only a small fraction of the total localized region was immediately visible in the Northern night sky, due both to sun-angle and elevation constraints. Here, we report on the transient candidates identified and rapid follow-up undertaken to determine the nature of each candidate. Even in the small area imaged of 126 sq deg, after extensive filtering, 8 candidates were deemed worthy of additional follow-up. Within two hours, all 8 were spectroscopically classified by the Keck II telescope. Curiously, even though such events are rare, one of our candidates was a superluminous supernova. We obtained radio data with the Jansky Very Large Array and X-ray follow-up with the Swift satellite for this transient. None of our candidates appear to be associated with the gravitational wave trigger, which is unsurprising given that GW150914 came from the merger of two stellar-mass black holes. This end-to-end discovery and follow-up campaign bodes well for future searches in this post-detection era of gravitational waves., Revised

GPCRs exhibit a common architecture of seven transmembrane helices (TMs) linked by intracellular loops and extracellular loops (ECLs). Given their peripheral location to the site of G-protein interaction, it might be assumed that ECL segments merely link the important TMs within the helical bundle of the receptor. However, compelling evidence has emerged in recent years revealing a critical role for ECLs in many fundamental aspects of GPCR function, which supported by recent GPCR crystal structures has provided mechanistic insights. This review will present current understanding of the key roles of ECLs in ligand binding, activation and regulation of both family A and family B GPCRs.

Few studies have examined risk-reduction alternatives to consistent condom use for HIV prevention among heterosexual young adults. We used qualitative methodology to explore risk reduction strategies and contextual factors influencing attempts to reduce risk in an urban, high morbidity sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic. Focus groups were conducted October-December 2014 with heterosexually identified men (n = 13) and women (n = 20) aged 18-29 seeking STI screening at an urban clinic. Groups were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed for thematic content using Atlas.ti software. Quantitative information included sociodemographics, HIV/STI testing history, and 6-month sexual behaviors. Among 33 predominantly African-American participants with a median age of 22, risk-reduction strategies included monogamy agreements, selective condom use with casual and high-risk partners, and frequent HIV/STI testing, though testing was commonly used as a post-hoc reassurance after risk exposure. Many men and women used implicit risk assessment strategies due to mistrust or difficulty communicating. Concurrency was common but rarely discussed within partnerships. Despite attempts to reduce risk, monogamy agreements were often poorly adhered to and not openly discussed. Alcohol and substance use frequently interfered with safer sexual decisions. Participants were aware of HIV/STI risk and commonly practiced risk-reduction strategies, but acknowledged faulty assumptions and poor adherence. This work provides insights into risk-reduction approaches that are already used and may be strengthened as part of effective HIV/STI prevention interventions.

Lockheed Martin has built a Space Object Tracking (SPOT) facility at our Santa Cruz test site in Northern California. SPOT consists of three 1 meter optical telescopes controlled by a common site management system to individually or cooperatively task each system to observe orbital debris and earth orbiting satellites. The telescopes are mounted in Az/El fork mounts capable of rapid repointing and arc-sec class open loop tracking. Each telescope is installed in a separate clam shell dome and has aft mounted benches to facilitate installing various instrument suites. The telescope domes are mounted on movable rail carts that can be positioned arbitrarily along tracks to provide variable baselines for sparse aperture imaging. The individual telescopes achieved first light in June 2012 and have been used since to observe satellites and orbital debris. Typical observations consist of direct photometric imaging at visible and near infrared wavelengths, and also include spectroscopic and hypertemporal measurements. Rayleigh beacon adaptive optical systems for atmospheric aberration correction and high rate J-Band trackers for each telescope will be added in 2015. Coherent combinations of the three telescopes as an interferometric imaging array using actively stabilized free space variable delay optical paths and fringe tracking sensors is also planned. The first narrow band (I band) interferometric fringes will be formed in the summer of 2014, with wide band (R, I, H) interferometric imaging occurring by early 2015.

Rapid assessment and monitoring is essential for patients with acute bronchospasm. However, tools for measuring dyspnea or the state of being short of breath are often limited to peak flow, blood gas analysis, and asking patients multiple questions about their breathing at a time when they find speaking difficult. We thus decided to examine a tool called the modified Borg scale (MBS) that had the potential to provide quick, easy, and rapid information about a patient's subjective state of dyspnea. This 0 to 10 rated scale gave our ED patients a device they could use to measure and evaluate their dyspnea. For this reason, we added it to the triage assessment practice and included it in all posttreatment assessment notes on patients with exacerbations of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who were seen in the emergency department and urgent care clinic.(1) Can patients with acute bronchospastic asthma or COPD adequately communicate their level of dyspnea using the MBS? (2) Does subjective improvement in the patient's dyspnea using the MBS correlate with improvements in pulmonary functions as measured by the peak flow meter and cutaneous oxygen saturation (Sao(2))?Routine and triage assessment of subjective dyspnea using the MBS was instituted at a hospital emergency department serving adult veterans. Concurrently, the MBS was added to our standardized treatment protocol for management of patients with bronchospasm. ED and urgent care records were reviewed to collect baseline and postrespiratory treatment data on peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR), MBS scores, and Sao(2) percentages.Four hundred male veterans aged 24 to 87 years presented with a chief complaint of dyspnea. The assessing physician identified 102 of these patients as having acute bronchospasm; 42 were diagnosed with asthma, and 60 were diagnosed with COPD. All study patients with acute bronchospasm were able to use the MBS to rate their perception of severity of dyspnea. As the peak flow measurements increased, the MBS scores of difficulty breathing decreased. For the asthma groups, the mean MBS score decreased from 5.1 at triage baseline to 2.4 after treatment. This finding indicated that a significant correlation existed between the change in MBS scores and the change in PEFR from pretreatment to posttreatment scores (r = -.31, P.05). As the peak flow increased, the MBS scores decreased. Sao(2) only slightly improved in the asthma group compared with the COPD group. For patients with COPD, the mean MBS score decreased from 6.0 at triage baseline to 3.0 after treatment. This finding indicated that a significant correlation also existed between the change in MBS scores and the change in PEFR from pretreatment to posttreatment scores (r = -.42, P.001). Cutaneous oxygen saturation also improved in the COPD group after treatment. The modality of treatment ordered by the physician was metered dose inhaler or nebulizer. These treatment modalities had no effect on the aforementioned results in the asthma or COPD group.The MBS is a valid and reliable assessment tool for dyspnea. This study demonstrated that it correlated well with other clinical parameters and could be useful when assessing and monitoring outcomes in patients with acute bronchospasm. Patients who used the MBS rated it with a high degree of satisfaction on ease of use and found that the language in this scale adequately expressed their dyspnea. The ED triage and primary care nursing staff rated the MBS as highly satisfactory, stating that it was quick and easy to use. Respiratory assessment in the triage notes and nursing notes were streamlined to consistently include 3 respiratory measures: PEFR, MBS, and Sao(2). Long respiratory narratives were found to be unnecessary in many cases. In addition, the MBS helped to include an important element of subjective assessment when evaluating the severity of dyspnea.

Characteristics of the electronic excited states of transition-metal complexes are reviewed. Attention is focussed on the experimental means of identifying the orbital natures of the emitting manifolds. Two new criteria for distinguishing among excited triplet terms are enunciated: (a) the profile of the phosphorescence lifetime vs. the temperature in the range 77−4 K, and (b) the functional dependence of the phosphorescence decay rate on an external magnetic field at ∼ 4 K temperatures. These criteria are applied to the red emission emanating from solid platinum(II) complexes that form linear chains [Pt(2,2′-bipyridine)(CN)2; Pt(2,2′-bipyridine)Cl2] and to Pt(2-phenylpyridine)2 that crystallizes with discrete dimeric units. The origin of the phosphorescence from all three substances is assigned to a 3 d σ ∗ p σ term from a consideration of the criteria given above. The red emission from solutions and rigid glasses of Pt(4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine)(ecda) and Pt(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenantroline)(ecda) [ecda = 1-ethoxycarbonyl-1-cyanoethylene-2,2-dithiolate] is reassigned to a 3 d σ ∗ p σ term of a binuclear defect state since the T-dependence criterion does not support the current assignment to a 3MLCT of a monomeric species.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disorder characterized by marked T‐cell expansion of T helper 1 (Th1) cells. The cause of T‐cell overactivity is unknown. We hypothesized that interleukin‐10 (IL‐10) production by a yet undefined cell type might be defective, resulting in loss of regulation of T‐cell activity. Focusing on IL‐10‐producing monocytes, we first showed that monocytes isolated from the peripheral blood of corticosteroid‐naïve sarcoidosis patients (n = 51) produced less IL‐10 compared to controls, and were less able to suppress T‐cell proliferation. In addition, monocytic IL‐10 production correlated negatively with disease activity score. As invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells are known to both interact with monocytes and be reduced in sarcoidosis patients, we then asked whether iNKT‐specific defects might be responsible for this reduced IL‐10 production. We found that greater numbers of circulating iNKT cells was associated with higher IL‐10 production. Moreover, iNKT cells enhanced monocytic IL‐10 production in vitro. Defective IL‐10 production and T‐cell suppression by sarcoidosis monocytes could be restored following their coculture with iNKT cells, in a CD1d‐ and cell contact‐dependent process. We suggest that reduced iNKT‐cell numbers in sarcoidosis may lead to impaired monocytic IL‐10 production and unchecked T‐cell expansion in sarcoidosis. These findings provide fresh insight into the mechanism of sarcoidosis disease, and interaction between iNKT cells and monocytes.

The Keck Interferometer (KI) combined the two 10 m W. M. Keck Observatory telescopes on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, as a long-baseline near- and mid-infrared interferometer. Funded by NASA, it operated from 2001 until 2012. KI used adaptive optics on the two Keck telescopes to correct the individual wavefronts, as well as active fringe tracking in all modes for path-length control, including the implementation of cophasing to provide long coherent integration times. KI implemented high sensitivity fringe-visibility measurements at H (1.6 μm), K (2.2 μm), and L (3.8 μm) bands, and nulling measurements at N band (10 μm), which were used to address a broad range of science topics. Supporting these capabilities was an extensive interferometer infrastructure and unique instrumentation, including some additional functionality added as part of the NSF-funded ASTRA program. This paper provides an overview of the instrument architecture and some of the key design and implementation decisions, as well as a description of all of the key elements and their configuration at the end of the project. The objective is to provide a view of KI as an integrated system, and to provide adequate technical detail to assess the implementation. Included is a discussion of the operational aspects of the system, as well as of the achieved system performance. Finally, details on V^2 calibration in the presence of detector nonlinearities as applied in the data pipeline are provided.

Objective This study examined longitudinal relationships between maternal red-cell folate status and dietary intakes of vitamins B(6), B(12) and folate before and during pregnancy and subsequent postpartum depressive symptoms.Study design and setting Within a cohort study of women aged 20-34 years (the Southampton Women's Survey) dietary data were obtained before pregnancy and at 11 and 34 weeks' gestation. Red-cell folate was measured before pregnancy and at 11 weeks' gestation. We derived relative risks of postpartum depressive symptoms using an Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) score of ≥ 13 administered from 6 months to 1 year postpartum.Results No significant differences were found between those with postpartum depressive symptoms (n = 905) and those without (n = 1951) in relation to red-cell folate concentration or dietary intake of folate, vitamin B(12) and vitamin B(6), before or during pregnancy. A prior history of mental illness (relative risk (RR) 1.83; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.53-2.19) was associated with postpartum depressive symptoms, and women who breastfed until 6 months were less likely to experience postpartum depressive symptoms (RR 0.68; 95% CI 0.55-0.84).Conclusion This study suggests that folate status and dietary folate, B(6) and B(12) intakes before and during pregnancy are not associated with postpartum depressive symptoms. A history of mental illness, however, was a strong risk factor.

Low perception of HIV risk despite behaviors associated with increased risk is thought to be a contributing factor for a higher prevalence of HIV in blacks than other groups in the United States. We sought to determine HIV risk perception and its impact on safer sex practices and interest in preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). From August 1 to October 31, 2010, an anonymous survey was conducted at a sexually transmitted infection clinic asking questions about demographics, risk behaviors, and PrEP interest. Participants were categorized into high-risk, moderate-risk, and low-risk groups according to predefined HIV risk characteristics. Only heterosexual high-risk participants were further assessed for their risk perception, condom use and PrEP interest. There were 494 participants; 63% male, 70% blacks, 88% heterosexual; 83% were categorized into the high-risk group. Of the 359 heterosexual high-risk participants, 301 (84%) perceived themselves at no or low-risk. Rates of consistent condom use with vaginal, oral, and anal sex were low (20%) in this group despite high levels of knowledge about HIV transmission risks. Rates of condom use were not affected by risk perception. No interest in PrEP was associated with low education level (adjusted odds ratio 4.97; p=0.02) and low risk perception. These findings suggest that despite having knowledge about HIV transmission risks, the majority of high-risk participants did not recognize their risks and used condoms with low frequency. Low risk perception and low education level may impact PrEP interest. Enhanced interventions are needed to improve HIV risk perception, safer sex practices, and knowledge about PrEP.

Understanding factors that affect heterosexual transmission of HIV in women is of great importance. Lactobacilli in the lower genital tract of women utilize glycogen in vaginal epithelial cells as an energy source and produce lactic acid. The resultant vaginal acidity is believed to provide protection against HIV infection. Conversely, bacterial vaginosis (BV) is characterized by less lactic acid and a higher pH, and is associated with increased susceptibility to HIV infection. Because vaginal infection of macaques with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) or simian-human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV) is used as a model to study HIV sexual transmission, and because previous studies have shown a paucity of lactobacilli in rhesus macaques' lower genital tract, we compared lactic acid and glycogen levels in the genital fluid of rhesus and pigtail macaques with levels found in humans. The levels of lactic acid were lower in both rhesus (median=1.2 mol lactate/mg protein) and pigtail macaques (median=0.7 mol/mg) compared to women with healthy genital microbiota (median=4.2 mol/mg). Glycogen levels were significantly lower in both rhesus (median=0.004 μg glycogen/μg protein) and pigtail macaques (median=0 μg/μg) than in women (median=0.2 μg/μg). No significant differences in glycogen or lactate levels were observed comparing longitudinally collected samples from cycling pigtail macaques. These data show that the previously reported scarcity of lactobacilli in macaques correlates with low glycogen and lactic acid levels. These findings have important implications for studies of vaginal infection of macaques with SIV or SHIV and further our understanding of how the bacterial microbiota influences HIV infection.

Background More than one million new cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) occur each day. The immune responses and inflammation induced by STDs and other frequent non-STD microbial colonizations (i.e. Candida and bacterial vaginosis) can have serious pathologic consequences in women including adverse pregnancy outcomes, infertility and increased susceptibility to infection by other pathogens. Understanding the types of immune mediators that are elicited in the lower genital tract by these infections/colonizations can give important insights into the innate and adaptive immune pathways that are activated and lead to strategies for preventing pathologic effects. Methodology/Principal Findings 32 immune mediators were measured by multiplexed immunoassays to assess the immune environment of the lower genital tract mucosa in 84 women attending an urban STD clinic. IL-3, IL-1ß, VEGF, angiogenin, IL-8, ß2Defensin and ß3Defensin were detected in all subjects, Interferon-α was detected in none, while the remaining mediators were detected in 40% to 93% of subjects. Angiogenin, VEGF, FGF, IL-9, IL-7, lymphotoxin-α and IL-3 had not been previously reported in genital mucosal fluid from women. Strong correlations were observed between levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-6, between chemokines IP-10 and MIG and between myeloperoxidase, IL-8 and G-CSF. Samples from women with any STD/colonization had significantly higher levels of IL-8, IL-3, IL-7, IL-1ß, lactoferrin and myeloperoxidase. IL-1ß and lactoferrin were significantly increased in gonorrhea, Chlamydia, cervicitis, bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. Conclusions/Significance These studies show that mucosal fluid in general appears to be an environment that is rich in immune mediators. Importantly, IL-1ß and lactoferrin are biomarkers for STDs/colonizations providing insights into immune responses and pathogenesis at this mucosal site.

The healing of fetal tibial bone after osteotomy with and without stable fixation has been reported previously. The present study was designed to evaluate fetal bone gap healing using a tibial ostectomy model in fetal sheep. Eighteen time-dated pregnant ewes (20 fetuses, 34 experimental hind limbs) underwent intrauterine surgery at 95 days gestation (term, 145 days). A titanium miniplate was applied to the anterior aspect of the tibia and a longitudinal length of bone approximately 1.5 times its diameter was removed and the incision closed. The pregnancies were then allowed to progress until the ewe was killed at postoperative weeks 1, 2, 4, or 7. Assessments at that time included evaluation of gross morphology, histologic and radiologic appearance, and collagen analysis and hydroxyproline determination of the tissue within and at the borders of the gap. At 7 weeks, seven of nine bone gap specimens exhibited radiographic and histologic evidence of union with woven and lamellar bone. Hydroxyproline concentrations gradually increased within the bone gap over the period of the study. At all intervals, type I collagen composed over 90% of the collagen within the healing bony gap. Histologically and biochemically, the process appears to be similar to postnatal bone healing, albeit occurring at an accelerated rate.

Digital Holography is a technique which provides a measurement of the complex field reflecting from a coherently illuminated object. When the measurement is performed with two carefully chosen wavelengths a phase difference map can be created providing a three dimensional map of the object. We present results from a laboratory experiment where the surface contours of coral are measured in seawater. Contour maps with step sizes on the order of 0.1 mm can easily be obtained. We propose that this technique be used to remotely monitor the growth of coral in an effort to quantify the health of coral beds. The technique is effective from space, aircraft, ships, buoys or rigid platforms such as a pier. In the last few years we have been successfully using this technique to measure objects through very turbulent atmosphere at ranges of up to 700 meters and we are now applying the concept to shoreline applications.

Summary Intravenous diclofenac sodium was evaluated in a double-blind randomised trial relative to intramuscular diclofenac, intravenous fentanyl, and intramuscular placebo in 160 patients undergoing extraction of impacted lower third molar teeth. The test drug was administered before operation in an attempt to alleviate postoperative pain. A 10-cm visual analogue scale was used to assess pain at 30 minutes and one day after surgery, if the patients stayed overnight. Patients who received intravenous diclofenac had significantly less pain than the other groups 30 minutes after operation. They also had significantly less pain one day after surgery than the placebo or opioid groups, but not less than the intramuscular diclofenac group. Capillary bleeding time, in comparison with placebo, was significantly prolonged after the use of intramuscular diclofenac, and a similar but nonsignificant trend was observed in the intravenous diclofenac group. No problems were encountered with excessive bleeding in any group.

Materials with very low DC magnetic susceptibility have many scientific applications. To our knowledge however, relatively little research has been conducted with the goal to produce a totally nonmagnetic material. This phrase in our case means after spatially averaging over macroscopic volumes, it possesses an average zero DC magnetic susceptibility. We report measurements of the DC magnetic susceptibility of three different types of nonmagnetic materials at room temperature: (I) solutions of paramagnetic salts and diamagnetic liquids, (II) liquid gallium-indium alloys and (III) pressed powder mixtures of tungsten and bismuth. The lowest measured magnetic susceptibility among these candidate materials is in the order of 10^-9 cgs volume susceptibility units, about two orders of magnitude smaller than distilled water. In all cases, the measured concentration dependence of the magnetic susceptibility is consistent with that expected for the weighted sum of the susceptibilities of the separate components within experimental error. These results verify the Wiedemann additivity law and thereby realize the ability to produce materials with small but tunable magnetic susceptibility. For our particular scientific application, we are also looking for materials with the largest possible number of neutrons and protons per unit volume. The gallium-indium alloys fabricated and measured in this work possess to our knowledge the smallest ratio of volume magnetic susceptibility to nucleon number density per unit volume for a room temperature liquid, and the tungsten-bismuth pressed powder mixtures possess to our knowledge the smallest ratio of volume magnetic susceptibility to nucleon number density per unit volume for a room temperature solid. This ratio is a figure of merit for a certain class of precision experiments that search for possible exotic spin-dependent forces of Nature., Comment: 8 pages, 4 tables and 5 figures

Hyperspectral imaging systems produce very large quantities of high fidelity information presenting an arduous task of exploitation for the image analyst. The Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center (LM/ATC) is investigating an aural cueing technique by which the spectral information is sonically encoded. This creates an image exploitation system that employs multiple sensory modalities, auditory as well as visual, to facilitate analysis of multimodal imagery. This paper summarizes the encoding technique and describe several examples from a Fourier transform spectrometer whereby the spectral information is combined with traditional panchromatic imagery to create a multimodal imaging system
