2. First observation of ion beam channeling in bent crystals at multi-TeV energies

Abstract: Abstract Planar channeling in bent crystals has been observed in LHC with multi-TeV proton beam in 2015. Two crystals, mounted on novel high-accuracy goniometers (one in the horizontal and one in the vertical plane), are integrated in the LHC collimation system, for studying the feasibility of the crystal-based collimation scheme. Using this experimental setup, tests with fully-stripped lead ion beams at both 450 Z and 6500 Z GeV were carried during dedicated LHC beam time. Planar channeling was observed for the first time with lead ions at these unprecedented energies surpassing by more than 1 order of magnitude the previous state-of-the-art for lead heavy ions and providing an important experimental basis for future applications of bent crystals in beam manipulations. The set of measurements performed to confirm this observation, as the local loss reduction in presence of channeling and the evidence of a deflected beam downstream of the crystal, are presented.

Abstract: Abstract We review the physics opportunities of the Future Circular Collider, covering its e+e-, pp, ep and heavy ion programmes. We describe the measurement capabilities of each FCC component, addressing the study of electroweak, Higgs and strong interactions, the top quark and flavour, as well as phenomena beyond the Standard Model. We highlight the synergy and complementarity of the different colliders, which will contribute to a uniquely coherent and ambitious research programme, providing an unmatchable combination of precision and sensitivity to new physics.

Abstract: 73Ge(n,γ) cross sections were measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN up to neutron energies of 300 keV, providing for the first time experimental data above 8 keV. Results indicate that the stellar cross section at kT=30 keV is 1.5 to 1.7 times higher than most theoretical predictions. The new cross sections result in a substantial decrease of 73Ge produced in stars, which would explain the low isotopic abundance of 73Ge in the solar system. Abstract: Strong reduction of multiple scattering for channeled particles has been observed in an experiment on the deflection of a 180 GeV/c π+-meson beam by bent silicon crystals. The RMS deflections due to multiple scattering for the channeled particles were about six times smaller than for non-channeled ones. It was shown that the approach suggested recently for the description of multiple scattering for channeled particles using the experimental data for random crystal orientations gives fair agreement with the experiment. Abstract: This work reports on accurate, high-resolution measurements of the 25Mg(n,γ)26Mg and 25Mg(n,tot) cross sections in the neutron energy range from thermal to about 300 keV, leading to a significantly improved 25Mg(n,γ)26Mg parametrization. The relevant resonances for n+25Mg were characterized from a combined R-matrix analysis of the experimental data. This resulted in an unambiguous spin/parity assignment of the corresponding excited states in 26Mg. With this information experimental upper limits of the reaction rates for 22Ne(α,n)25Mg and 22Ne(α,γ)26Mg were established, potentially leading to a significantly higher (α,n)/(α,γ) ratio than previously evaluated. The impact of these results has been studied for stellar models in the mass range 2 to 25 M⊙.

Abstract: Two high-accuracy goniometers equipped with two bent silicon crystals were installed in the betatron cleaning insertion of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during its long shutdown. First beam tests were recently performed at the LHC with 450 GeV/c and 6500 GeV/c stored proton beams to investigate the feasibility of beam halo collimation assisted by bent crystals. For the first time channeling of 6500 GeV/c protons was observed in a particle accelerator. A strong reduction of beam losses due to nuclear inelastic interactions in the aligned crystal in comparison with its amorphous orientation was detected. The loss reduction value was about 24. Thus, the results show that deflection of particles by a bent crystal due to channeling is effective for this record particle energy.

Abstract: In ideal two-stage collimation systems, the secondary collimator–absorber should have its length sufficient to exclude practically the exit of halo particles with large impact parameters. In the UA9 experiments on the crystal assisted collimation of the SPS beam a 60 cm long tungsten bar is used as a secondary collimator–absorber which is insufficient for the full absorption of the halo protons. Multi-turn simulation studies of the collimation allowed to select the position for the beam loss monitor downstream the collimation area where the contribution of particles deflected by the crystal in channeling regime but emerging from the secondary collimator–absorber is considerably reduced. This allowed observation of a strong leakage reduction of halo protons from the SPS beam collimation area, thereby approaching the case with an ideal absorber.

Abstract: Deflection of 400 GeV/c protons by a short bent silicon crystal was studied at the CERN SPS. It was shown that the dechanneling probability increases while the dechanneling length decreases with an increase of incident angles of particles relative to the crystal planes. The observation of the dechanneling length reduction provides evidence of the particle population increase at the top levels of transverse energies in the potential well of the planar channels. Abstract: The construction of a 4 GeV superconducting proton linac (the SPL) is now part of the long term plan of CERN, and the construction of Linac4, its low-energy front end, has begun. For mid-2012 the existing conceptual design of the SPL has to be refined and transformed into a project proposal. As a first step, basic parameters like rf frequency, accelerating gradient, and operating temperature of the superconducting cavities have been reassessed, taking into account the experience accumulated in the world during the recent years, especially for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) in Oakridge and the International Linear Collider (ILC) projects. The conclusions confirm the validity of the initial choices, namely, the rf frequency of 704.4 MHz and the cooling temperature of ≈2 K. However, the assumed gradients are estimated as optimistic: additional tests are necessary during the coming years to properly define the values to be used in the SPL design. This analysis is documented and its results are explained in this report.

Abstract: Two prototypes of superconducting, 352 MHz coaxial half-wave resonators with β=0.17 and β=0.31 have been designed, constructed, and tested at INFN-LNL, in the framework of the SPES and EURISOL DS projects. Main features of these double-wall, 2-gap structures are compactness, mechanical stability, and easy installation in different kinds of cryostats. Their acceleration capabilities are similar to the ones of Spoke resonators with similar β. These cavities are being developed for acceleration of high power hadron beams in the 5–100 MeV/u energy range.

Abstract: We present the results of an experimental study of multiple scattering of positively charged high energy particles in bent samples of monocrystalline silicon. This work confirms the recently discovered effect of a strong reduction in the rms multiple scattering angle of particles channeled in the silicon (111) plane. The effect is observed in the plane orthogonal to the bending plane. We show in detail the influence of angular constraints on the magnitude of the effect. Comparison of the multiple scattering process at different energies indicates a violation of the law of inverse proportionality of the rms angle of channeled particles with energy. By increasing the statistics, we have improved the results of multiple scattering measurements for particles moving, but not channeled, in silicon crystals., arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1910.00250 minor fixes

Abstract: Thin 33S samples for the study of the 33S(n, α)30Si cross-section at the n_TOF facility at CERN were made by thermal evaporation of 33S powder onto a dedicated substrate made of kapton covered with thin layers of copper, chromium and titanium. This method has provided for the first time bare sulfur samples a few centimeters in diameter. The samples have shown an excellent adherence with no mass loss after few years and no sublimation in vacuum at room temperature. The determination of the mass thickness of 33S has been performed by means of Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. The samples have been successfully tested under neutron irradiation.

Abstract: The aim of this work is to provide a precise and accurate measurement of the U238(n,γ) reaction cross section in the energy region from 1 eV to 700 keV. This reaction is of fundamental importance for the design calculations of nuclear reactors, governing the behavior of the reactor core. In particular, fast reactors, which are experiencing a growing interest for their ability to burn radioactive waste, operate in the high energy region of the neutron spectrum. In this energy region most recent evaluations disagree due to inconsistencies in the existing measurements of up to 15%. In addition, the assessment of nuclear data uncertainty performed for innovative reactor systems shows that the uncertainty in the radiative capture cross section of U238 should be further reduced to 1-3% in the energy region from 20 eV to 25 keV. To this purpose, addressed by the Nuclear Energy Agency as a priority nuclear data need, complementary experiments, one at the GELINA and two at the n-TOF facility, were proposed and carried out within the 7th Framework Project ANDES of the European Commission. The results of one of these U238(n,γ) measurements performed at the n-TOF CERN facility are presented in this work. The γ-ray cascade following the radiative neutron capture has been detected exploiting a setup of two C6D6 liquid scintillators. Resonance parameters obtained from this work are on average in excellent agreement with the ones reported in evaluated libraries. In the unresolved resonance region, this work yields a cross section in agreement with evaluated libraries up to 80 keV, while for higher energies our results are significantly higher.

Abstract: This work reports on accurate, high-resolution measurements of the $^{25}$Mg($n, \gamma$)$^{26}$Mg and $^{25}$Mg($n, tot$) cross sections in the neutron energy range from thermal to about 300 keV, leading to a significantly improved $^{25}$Mg($n, \gamma$)$^{26}$Mg parametrization. The relevant resonances for $n+^{25}$Mg were characterized from a combined R-matrix analysis of the experimental data. This resulted in an unambiguous spin/parity assignment of the corresponding excited states in $^{26}$Mg. With this information experimental upper limits of the reaction rates for $^{22}$Ne($\alpha, n$)$^{25}$Mg and $^{22}$Ne($\alpha, \gamma$)$^{26}$Mg were established, potentially leading to a significantly higher ($\alpha, n$)/($\alpha, \gamma$) ratio than previously evaluated. Abstract: The Am241(n,γ) cross section has been measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN using deuterated benzene liquid scintillators, commonly known as C6D6 detectors, and time-of-flight spectrometry. The results in the resolved resonance range bring new constraints to evaluations below 150 eV, and the energy upper limit was extended from 150 to 320 eV with a total of 172 new resonances not present in current evaluations. The thermal capture cross section was found to be σth=678±68 b, which is in good agreement with evaluations and most previous measurements. The capture cross section in the unresolved resonance region was extracted in the remaining energy range up to 150 keV, and found to be larger than current evaluations and previous measurements.

Abstract: The (n, α) reaction in the radioactive 59Ni is of relevance in nuclear astrophysics as 59Ni can be considered as the first branching point in the astrophysical s-process. Its relevance in nuclear technology is especially related to material embrittlement in stainless steel. However, there is a discrepancy between available experimental data and the evaluated nuclear data files for this reaction. At the n_TOF facility at CERN, a dedicated system based on sCVD diamond diodes was set up to measure the 59Ni(n, α)56Fe cross section. The results of this measurement, with special emphasis on the dominant resonance at 203 eV, are presented here.

Abstract: The cross section of the Ni-62(n,gamma) reaction was measured with the time-of-flight technique at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN. Capture kernels of 42 resonances were analyzed up to 200 keV neutron energy and Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS) from kT = 5-100 keV were calculated. With a total uncertainty of 4.5%, the stellar cross section is in excellent agreement with the the KADoNiS compilation at kT = 30 keV, while being systematically lower up to a factor of 1.6 at higher stellar temperatures. The cross section of the Ni-63(n,gamma) reaction was measured for the first time at n_TOF. We determined unresolved cross sections from 10 to 270 keV with a systematic uncertainty of 17%. These results provide fundamental constraints on s-process production of heavier species, especially the production of Cu in massive stars, which serve as the dominant source of Cu in the solar system.

Abstract: The accurate knowledge of the neutron-induced fission cross-sections of actinides and other isotopes involved in the nuclear fuel cycle is essential for the design of advanced nuclear systems, such as Generation-IV nuclear reactors. Such experimental data can also provide the necessary feedback for the adjustment of nuclear model parameters used in the evaluation process, resulting in the further development of nuclear fission models. In the present work, the 240Pu(n,f) cross-section was measured at CERN’s n TOF facility relative to the well-known 235U(n,f) cross section, over a wide range of neutron energies, from meV to almost MeV, using the time-of-flight technique and a set-up based on Micromegas detectors. This measurement was the first experiment to be performed at n TOF’s new experimental area (EAR-2), which offers a significantly higher neutron flux compared to the already existing experimental area (EAR-1). Preliminary results as well as the experimental procedure, including a description of the facility and the data handling and analysis, are presented., Support of the European Commission under the ANDES, ERINDA and CHANDA projects (7th Framework Programme).

Grieco., [Objectives] To describe the current epidemiology of bloodstream infection (BSI) in patients with cirrhosis; and to analyse predictors of 30-day mortality and risk factors for antibiotic resistance., [Methods] Cirrhotic patients developing a BSI episode were prospectively included at 19 centres in five countries from September 2014 to December 2015. The discrimination of mortality risk scores for 30-day mortality were compared by area under the receiver operator risk and Cox regression models. Risk factors for multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) were assessed with a logistic regression model., [Results] We enrolled 312 patients. Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria and Candida spp. were the cause of BSI episodes in 53%, 47% and 7% of cases, respectively. The 30-day mortality rate was 25% and was best predicted by the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) and Chronic Liver Failure–SOFA (CLIF-SOFA) score. In a Cox regression model, delayed (>24 hours) antibiotic treatment (hazard ratio (HR) 7.58; 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.29–18.67; p < 0.001), inadequate empirical therapy (HR 3.14; 95% CI 1.93–5.12; p < 0.001) and CLIF-SOFA score (HR 1.35; 95% CI 1.28–1.43; p < 0.001) were independently associated with 30-day mortality. Independent risk factors for MDRO (31% of BSIs) were previous antimicrobial exposure (odds ratio (OR) 2.91; 95% CI 1.73–4.88; p < 0.001) and previous invasive procedures (OR 2.51; 95% CI 1.48–4.24; p 0.001), whereas spontaneous bacterial peritonitis as BSI source was associated with a lower odds of MDRO (OR 0.30; 95% CI 0.12–0.73; p 0.008)., [Conclusions] MDRO account for nearly one-third of BSI in cirrhotic patients, often resulting in delayed or inadequate empirical antimicrobial therapy and increased mortality rates. Our data suggest that improved prevention and treatment strategies for MDRO are urgently needed in the liver cirrhosis patients.

Abstract: We have measured the neutron capture cross sections of the stable magnesium isotopes 24,25,26Mg in the energy range of interest to the s process using the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN. Capture events from a natural metal sample and from samples enriched in 25Mg and 26Mg were recorded using the total energy method based on C6 2H6 detectors. Neutron resonance parameters were extracted by a simultaneous resonance shape analysis of the present capture data and existing transmission data on a natural isotopic sample. Maxwellian-averaged capture cross sections for the three isotopes were calculated up to thermal energies of 100 keV and their impact on s-process analyses was investigated. At 30 keV the new values of the stellar cross section for 24Mg, 25Mg, and 26Mg are 3.8±0.2 mb, 4.1±0.6 mb, and 0.14±0.01 mb, respectively.

Abstract: Neutron-induced reactions are studied at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN. The facility uses 6 similar to ns wide pulses of 20 GeV/c protons impinging on a lead spallation target. The large neutron energy range and the high instantaneous neutron flux combined with high resolution are among the key characteristics of the facility. After a first phase of data taking during the period 2001-2004, the facility has been refurbished with an upgraded spallation target and cooling system for a second phase of data taking which started in 2009. Since 2010, the experimental area at 185 m where the neutron beam arrives, has been modified into a worksector of type A, allowing the extension of the physics program to include neutron-induced reactions on radioactive isotopes

Abstract: A few years ago, the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF was built at CERN to address some of the urgent needs of high-accuracy nuclear data for Accelerator Driven Systems and other advanced nuclear energy systems, as well as for nuclear astrophysics and fundamental nuclear physics. Thanks to the characteristics of the neutron beam, and to state-of-the-art detection and acquisition systems, high quality neutron cross-section data have been obtained for a variety of isotopes, many of which radioactive. Following an important upgrade of the spallation target and of the experimental area, a new measurement campaign has started last year. After a brief review of the most important results obtained so far at n_TOF, the new features of the facility are presented, together with the first results on the commissioning of the neutron beam. The plans for future measurements, in particular related to nuclear technology are finally discussed.

Abstract: Superconducting microwave cavities have been proposed for the detection of gravitational waves in the high frequency range of the spectrum. The interaction of the gravitational wave with the cavity walls, and the resulting motion, induces the transition of some electromagnetic energy from an initially excited cavity mode to an empty one. The energy transfer is maximum when the frequency of the wave is equal to the frequency difference of the two cavity modes. In this paper, some ideas for the development of a tunable detector of gravitational waves around 10 kHz are discussed; the outline of a possible detector design and its expected sensitivity are also shown.

Abstract: The integral cross section of the 12C(n,p)12B reaction has been determined for the first time in the neutron energy range from threshold to several GeV at the n-TOF facility at CERN. The measurement relies on the activation technique with the β decay of 12B measured over a period of four half-lives within the same neutron bunch in which the reaction occurs. The results indicate that model predictions, used in a variety of applications, are mostly inadequate. The value of the integral cross section reported here can be used as a benchmark for verifying or tuning model calculations. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Abstract: Above 1 MeV of incident neutron energy the fission fragment angular distribution (FFAD) has generally a strong anisotropic behavior due to the combination of the incident orbital momentum and the intrinsic spin of the fissioning nucleus. This effect has to be taken into account for the efficiency estimation of devices used for fission cross section measurements. In addition it bears information on the spin deposition mechanism and on the structure of transitional states. We designed and constructed a detection device, based on Parallel Plate Avalanche Counters (PPAC), for measuring the fission fragment angular distributions of several isotopes, in particular 232Th. The measurement has been performed at n-TOF at CERN taking advantage of the very broad energy spectrum of the neutron beam. Fission events were recognized by back to back detection in coincidence in two position-sensitive detectors surrounding the targets. The detection efficiency, depending mostly on the stopping of fission fragments in backings and electrodes, has been computed with a Geant4 simulation and validated by the comparison to the measured case of 235U below 3 keV where the emission is isotropic. In the case of 232Th, the result is in good agreement with previous data below 10 MeV, with a good reproduction of the structures associated to vibrational states and the opening of second chance fission. In the 14 MeV region our data are much more accurate than previous ones which are broadly scattered. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2013.

Abstract: The n TOF collaboration operates a Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC) [1] for measuring neu- tron capture cross-sections of low-mass and/or radioactive samples. The results obtained with the TAC have led to a substantial improvement of the capture cross sections of 237Np and 240Pu [2]. The experience acquired during the rst measurements has allowed us to optimize the performance of the TAC and to improve the capture signal to background ratio, thus opening the way to more complex and demanding measurements on rare radioactive materials. The new design has been reached by a series of detailed Monte Carlo simulations of complete experiments and dedicated test measurements. The new capture setup will be presented and the main achievements highlighted.

Abstract: Brown Tuffs (BT) are volcaniclastic ash deposits prominently represented in the stratigraphic profiles of all the Aeolian Islands (and Capo Milazzo on the northern coast of Sicily). Detailed stratigraphy and tephrochronology together with available radiometric ages suggest that they were emplaced over a long time interval spanning from the end of the last interglacial period (ca. 80 ka BP) up to 4–5 ka BP (age of the overlying Punte Nere pyroclastic products on Vulcano). The most complete BT succession is documented on Lipari where 14 distinct and successive units are subdivided by the interbedding of widespread tephra layers, local volcanic products, paleosols and epiclastic deposits and the occurrence of local erosive surfaces. Inter-island occurrence of Ischia-Tephra (a widely known tephra layer in the Aeolian archipelago dated at 56 ka BP) and Monte Guardia pyroclastics from Lipari (dated at 22–20 ka BP) subdivides the BT succession in Upper (UBT), Intermediate (IBT) and Lower BT units (LBT), which can be correlated at regional level: the LBT was emplaced between 80 and 56 ka BP, the IBT between 56 and 22 ka BP and the UBT between 20 and 4–5 ka BP. On the basis of stratigraphy, similarity in lithology and textural features, morphology of glass fragments, composition and consistency of thickness and grain-size variations, UBT units correlate with Piano Grotte dei Rossi tuffs on Vulcano island. They were generated by pulsating hydromagmatic explosive activity giving rise to pyroclastic density currents spreading laterally from a source located inside the La Fossa caldera on Vulcano island. Composition is in agreement with this hypothesis since UBT compositional features match those of Vulcano magmas erupted in that period. The effect of co-ignimbrite ash clouds (or associated fallout processes from sustained eruptive columns) is seen to explain the presence of UBT in areas further away from the suggested source (e.g. Salina and Lipari islands and Capo Milazzo). The origin of UBT exposed on Panarea island is still a matter of debate, due to contrasting compositional data. Due to large uniformity of lithological, textural and componentry characters with respect to the UBT, the lower portions of the BT succession (LBT-IBT) are considered to be the result of recurrent, large scale hydromagmatic eruptions of similar type. Moreover, for the IBT units, the correlation with Monte Molineddo 3 pyroclastics of Vulcano island (on the basis of lithological, compositional and stratigraphic matching) again suggests source(s) related to the Vulcano plumbing system and located within the La Fossa Caldera.

32. Successful RF and Cryogenic Tests of the SOLEIL Cryomodule

Abstract: In the Storage Ring (SR) of the Synchrotron SOLEIL light source, two cryomodules will provide the maximum power of 600 kW required at the nominal energy of 2.75 GeV with the full beam current of 500 mA and all the insertion devices. A cryomodule prototype, housing two 352 MHz superconducting single-cell cavities with strong damping of the Higher Order Modes (HOM) was built and successfully tested in the ESRF. Even though the achieved performance (3 MV and 380 kW) did meet the SOLEIL requirement for the first year of operation, it was decided to upgrade the cryomodule prototype before its implementation on the SR. Modifications of the internal cryogenic system as well as the input power and dipolar HOM couplers required full disassembling, reassembling and testing of the cryomodule, which were carried out at CERN. The refurbishment and test program, which was achieved in the framework of a collaboration between SOLEIL, CEA and CERN, is reported in this paper. A 2ndcryomodule, similar to the modified prototype, shall be implemented on the SR by the end of 2006.

Abstract: CARE, an ambitious and coordinated programme of accelerator research and developments oriented towards high energy physics projects, has been launched in January 2004 by the main European laboratories and the European Commission. This project aims at improving existing infrastructures dedicated to future projects such as linear colliders, upgrades of hadron colliders and high intensity proton drivers. We describe the CARE R&D plans, mostly devoted to advancing the performance of the superconducting technology, both in the fields of RF cavities for electron or proton acceleration and of high field magnets, as well as to developing high intensity electron and proton injectors. We highlight some results and progress obtained so far.

34. A diode-pumped laser system for the photo-injector of an accelerator

Abstract: In this paper, we present the design of a laser system for the CTF3 test facility for the Compact Linear Collider at CERN. The accelerator requires high repeatability of the charge per electron bunch, meaning that the energy stability of the laser system must be better than 0.25%. The laser will produce 1.5 /spl mu/s flat- top pulse trains of /spl sim/2300 micro-pulses, with 15 kW average power in the pulse train at the fundamental wavelength of 1047 nm. This will he achieved by amplifying a CW pulse train in a pulsed diode-pumped Nd:YLF amplifier. Our amplifier is designed to run in steady-state, in a configuration producing flat-top pulses with energy stability better than 1% which will then be feedback stabilised.

Abstract: A 200 MHz single cell elliptical Nb-Cu cavity has been fabricated and tested at 4.2 K and at 2.5 K in a vertical de-war fitted in a radiation shielded pit, 5 m deep and 2.5 m in diameter. The low field Q/sub 0/ reached 1.5 /spl times/ 10/sup 10/ at 4.2 K. Two multipacting barriers show up at E/sub acc/ = 3 MV/m and 1 MV/m. Helium processing is effective to reduce field emission and improve accelerating gradients by a factor of as much as 2. E/sub acc/ reached 11 MV/m at a Q/sub 0/ of 6 /spl times/ 10/sup 8/. The Q-drop is observed but shows a stronger field dependence as compared to expected Q-slope typical for Nb-Cu cavities.

38. Successful beam test of the HOM free superconducting SOLEIL cavity prototype at the ESRF

Abstract: A cryo-module housing two strongly HOM damped 352 MHz superconducting (SC) cavity cells has been developed within the framework of the SOLEIL project design phase. In 2002, the prototype was installed in the ESRF storage ring and tested with beam in the accelerating regime with the cavities cooled down to 4.5 K by means of liquid helium from Dewars. Four series of tests have been carried out at the end of scheduled shutdowns. In order not to disturb the ESRF machine performance during the user mode of operation, the cavities were maintained detuned at room temperature. In this passive regime, they remained transparent to the beam with less than 100 W of heat deposited by the beam and evacuated by a warm helium gas flow. Up to 170 mA of beam could be accelerated with a peak RF voltage of 3 MV and a power of 360 kW from the SC module. This corresponds to the performance required for the first SOLEIL operation phase. The concept of effective HOM damping was validated up to the maximum ESRF intensity of 200 mA. A few week points already identified at previous CERN tests were confirmed: high static cryogenic losses, poor cooling of one HOM coupler and too high fundamental power through the dipolar HOM couplers.

40. Measurements at TRIUMF on a 80 MHz cavity model for the CERN PS upgrade for LHC

Abstract: The RF system of the CERN PS is being upgraded to bunch a beam that can be captured by the SPS 200 MHz RF system for injection into LHC. Two identical 80 MHz cavities are part of this PS upgrade program. At CERN, the cavity has been designed using SUPERFISH and MAFIA concerning its shape, tuning devices and amplifier coupling loop. TRIUMF has built a simplified full-scale, copper-lined, wooden model, designed such that the field patterns of the fundamental accelerating mode and the longitudinal modes agree closely to CERN cavity ones. The aim of constructing the wooden model was primarily to check the design of the capacitive tuners, the power coupling loop and the HOM dampers for the longitudinal modes up to 1 GHz. The results of the measurements were used to define the parameters of the tuners and a reliable model to describe the interaction of the coupling loop with the fundamental mode of the final CERN cavity. Four quarter-wave antennae are adequate to damp the first fifteen longitudinal modes. In order not to decrease the shunt impedance of the fundamental mode by more than 5%, three-element filters have been used with the antenna which damps the longitudinal mode at 256 MHz, 336 MHz and 912 MHz.

41. Measurements on the First LHC Acceleration Module

Abstract: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), now under construction at CERN, will accelerate the two counterrotating beams of protons from an injection energy of 450 GeV to the coast value of 7 TeV where they will collide. The main accelerating system for each beam comprises eight 400 MHz superconducting cavities giving a total of 16 MV. The cavities are grouped in fours in cryogenic modules to ease installation and reduce heat losses. The different requirements at injection and collision together with the heavy beam loading have imposed the use of a variable power coupler (the coupling can be varied by a factor 10) and a tuner with 180 kHz range. The 300 kW power is supplied by a klystron attached to the cavity via a circulator. The first module with its four cavities has now been assembled at CERN and tested. The results from these measurements are presented, problems encountered are described and modifications to be applied in the future are given.

Abstract: The LHC RF system, which must handle high intensity (0.5 A d.c.) beams, makes use of superconducting single-cell cavities, best suited to minimizing the effects of periodic transient beam loading. There will be eight cavities per beam, each capable of delivering 2 MV (5 MV/m accelerating field) at 400 MHz. The cavities themselves are now being manufactured by industry, using niobium-on-copper technology which gives full satisfaction at LEP. A cavity unit includes a helium tank (4.5 K operating temperature) built around a cavity cell, RF and HOM couplers and a mechanical tuner, all housed in a modular cryostat. Four-unit modules are ultimately foreseen for the LHC (two per beam), while at present a prototype version with two complete units is being extensively tested. In addition to a detailed description of the cavity and its ancillary equipment, the first test results of the prototype will be reported.

43. Correlations between abnormalities on brain SPECT scan and interictal EEG-foci in children with 'intractable' partial epilepsy

Abstract: SPECT scanning with Tc99mHM-PAO was performed on 40 children with 'intractable' partial epilepsy; 27 patients had abnormalities on SPECT images consisting of areas of decreased cerebral blood flow. In 18 of these 27 subjects there was a good correlation between site of the abnormalities on SPECT scan and interictal EEG foci. 12 patients with regionally decreased CBF had also neuroimaging (C.T. and/or R.M.I.) abnormalities. The brain SPECT provides more precise detection of epileptogenic foci, when used to complement EEG, also in childhood-onset epilepsy.

Abstract: The recent development of SPECT has introduced a new procedure to evaluate neurological diseases. By mean of Tc99mHM-PAO we studied a group of 19 pediatric subjects (7 males and 12 females) with different form of migraine, within five days after the last headache attack. Postictally SPECT shows regionally decreased CBF in 3/4 of HM, in 5/6 of BAM, in 5/5 of CM and in 2/4 of M.

Abstract: SummaryThe excretion of 14C-warfarin and its metabolites in bile and urine was studied in rats with or without biliary fistulas. After oral administration of the drug, 39.4% of the 14C could be isolated in the bile and 18.9% in the urine at the end of 96 h. After i.v. administration 47.5% and 21.3% of the 14C was found in the bile and the urine respectively. In animals without biliary fistulas, 41% of the dose was found in the urine after intravenous injection and 43% via the oral route. In bile, five radioactive components were detected; one component was identified as warfarin and represented 3.9% (oral) and 8.5% (I.V.) of the 14C in the bile. Another component of bile (17.7% to 19.6% of 14C) was identified as 6-hydroxywarfarin. In urine, three 14C components were found; the major component in urine was found to be warfarin and represented close to 75% of the 14C in the urine. Two 14C metabolites which were present in the urine were also present in the bile. Biliary fistula did not prevent radioactivity from being discharged into the urine. In feces, 9.3% of the dose could be isolated and was similar to warfarin. In the liver, at the end of four hours, 19% of the 14C could be isolated; only 74% of this could be extracted and was established as warfarin. The liver failed to show the presence of any metabolites.

48. Levels of antithrombin III, alpha 2-macroglobulin, and alpha 1-antitrypsin in acute ischemic heart disease

Abstract: Since measurements of AT III and other possible coagulation inhibitors might provide an index of hypercoagulability, the goal was to measure over a 3-month period individual changes in blood levels of AT III, alpha 2-microglobulin, and alpha 1-antitrypsin in 51 patients with acute ischemic heart disease who were admitted to a Coronary Care Unit with the following diagnosis: unstable angina (26 patients), acute transmural myocardial infarction (20 patients), or subendocardial myocardial infarction (5 patients). Some patients received prophylactic antithrombotic therapy. AT III was measured by the von Kaulla, Owen, Thrombo-Screen, chromogenic, immunodiffusion, and immunoelectrophoretic methods. Alpha 2-macroglobulin and alpha 1-antitrypsin were measured by immunodiffusion. All inhibitors were measured on three different occasions: (1) on admission to hospital, (1) day of departure from hospital, and (3) at 3 months after hospitalization. Alpha 1-antitrypsin showed a significant increase compared to the control and remained elevated during the 3-month interval. Compared to normal control values, AT III was found to be significantly diminished when measured by one functional method (von Kaulla) in all three blood samples from patients with unstable angina and transmural myocardial infarction and by one immunological method (immunodiffusion) in patients with unstable angina, transmural myocardial infarction, and subendocardial myocardial infarction. Most methods determining functional AT III detected a significant increase 3 months after the acute ischemic episode; this rise was observed more often in patients with myocardial infarction than in those with unstable angina. Stepwise discriminant analysis separated the patients of the three groups. Subcutaneous heparin has no significant effect on AT III levels. Unexplained discrepancies still exist between the results obtained by various functional and immunological methods for determining AT III. It appears, however, that methods measuring functional AT III seem to be more suited than immunological methods to detect changes in AT III levels that might occur during and after an acute episode of ischemic heart disease.

50. Heparin Chromatography

Abstract: Commercial heparin is not a homogeneous substance. The isolation of the active component still appears to be a problem and usually requires several different procedures. In order to see if it would be possible to simplify the purification, we studied and compared the chromatography of porcine heparin by a systematic approach using various types of adsorbants, gels and programmed elution techniques employing a Beckman Spectrochrom 130 chromatographic analyzer. A total of 20 combinations were attempted with 200 mg of heparin (169 u/mg) being chromatographed in each case. The fractions of each peak were tested by several methods and included the activated partial thromboplastin time, recalcification time, thrombin time, anti-factor Xa, chromogenic, USP assay, agarose gel electrophoresis and the measurement of metachromatic activity. It was found that dextran gel with an average dry diameter of 75-100 um produced the best chromatograms whose peaks were well resolved. The medium molecular weight fraction of the second peak contained half of the applied heparin. This peak contained all the anticoagulant activity besides reacting very strongly for metachromatic activity. The smaller and larger molecular fractions found in the other three peaks gave very weak metachromatic activity and were devoid of anticoagulant activity. These results have important implications in the preparation and clinical use of heparin.
