The bulk crystals of LiBa12(BO3)7F4 were obtained from two flux compositions by the top seeded solution growth method. Crystals grown from BaCO3:BaF2:H3BO3:Li2CO3 = 3:3:3:1 charge were found to have a distinct linear dichroism effect at 0.35–0.65 and around 0.73 μm. This suggests application of the material in the production of polarizing filters and attenuators for visible range lasers.

A total of 200 (Large White × Landrace) sows were used in a 39-day study to evaluate the effects of feeding a non-starch polysaccharide (NSP)-hydrolysing enzyme multicomplex (Rovabio(®) Excel) in conjunction with a high- or reduced nutrient-density diet during lactation on sow body condition, feed intake and progeny performance. Eight sows were selected each week for 25 weeks, blocked by parity and BW into groups of four, and within the block randomly assigned to one of the four treatments (n = 50/treatment). Treatments were: (1) LND: low energy (13.14 MJ of DE/kg), low CP (15%) diet; (2) LND + RE: LND with 50 mg/kg NSP-hydrolysing enzyme; (3) HND: high energy (14.5 MJ of DE/kg), high CP (16.5%) diet; and (4) HND + RE: HND with 50 mg/kg NSP-hydrolysing enzyme. Sows were fed treatment diets from day 109 of gestation until the day of subsequent service. Between weaning and re-service, Rovabio(®) Excel addition to LND diets resulted in an increase in energy intake; however, a reduction was observed when supplemented to the HND diet (P < 0.05). The inclusion of Rovabio(®) Excel increased feed and energy intake during week 3 (days 15 to 21) of lactation (P < 0.05). Sows fed diets supplemented with Rovabio(®) Excel had greater back-fat depth at weaning and service (P < 0.05); however, the magnitude of change in back-fat depth during lactation and from farrowing to service was not different between treatments. Feeding the HND diet increased energy intake before farrowing, throughout lactation and during the weaning to service interval (P < 0.01); however, overall, average daily feed intake tended to be reduced (P < 0.10). At service, sows fed the HND diet were heavier than sows fed the LND diet (P < 0.05); however, the magnitude of change in BW between treatments was not different. Feeding the HND diet to sows resulted in a tendency for heavier piglets at birth (P = 0.10) that tended to grow at a faster rate and be heavier at weaning than piglets from sows fed the LND diet (P = 0.06). These results indicate that NSP-degrading enzymes offer minimal benefit to sows and their progeny when fed before and during lactation; however, increasing energy intake of sows during lactation may beneficially affect progeny.

Resume La tumeur pseudopapillaire et solide du pancreas est une tumeur rare qui atteint electivement les femmes jeunes. Sa presentation clinique est variable : elle peut etre de decouverte fortuite ou revelee par l’apparition d’une masse epigastrique ou de signes de compression biliaire. Son pronostic est excellent apres resection chirurgicale. Les donnees d’imagerie de cette tumeur sont essentielles car associees aux donnees epidemiologiques, elles suffisent a evoquer le diagnostic sans ponction-biopsie prealable. La TEP-TDM au 18 F-FDG met en evidence une tumeur fortement hypermetabolique suggerant une tumeur agressive alors qu’il ne s’agit que d’une tumeur a faible potentiel de malignite. Cette caracteristique peut rendre l’interpretation de la TEP-TDM au 18 F-FDG difficile si l’on meconnait cette particularite. Nous rapportons le cas d’une jeune fille âgee de 17 ans ayant presente une tumeur pseudopapillaire et solide du pancreas. Le diagnostic a ete retenu suite aux differents examens d’imagerie (echographie, tomodensitometrie et TEP-TDM au 18 F-FDG) confrontes a l’anamnese et confirme apres analyse anatomopathologique de la piece operatoire.

Resume Le traitement endoscopique du reflux vesico-ureteral par implant de polydimethylsiloxane (Macroplastique ® ) a montre son interet, mais les complications a long terme en sont encore mal connues. Une adolescente de 15 ans se plaignait de douleurs en fosse iliaque droite avec boiterie d’esquive. Apres de multiples explorations, le diagnostic de colique nephretique sur calcification de l’implant de Macroplastique ® a ete pose. Des cas de calcification d’implant de Macroplastique ® , mais aussi d’autres types d’implant, ont ete decrits dans la litterature, mais leurs manifestations cliniques sont mal connues, faisant errer le diagnostic. La prise en charge peut aller jusqu’a une exerese du materiel implante, voire la reimplantation ureterale.

Bulk crystals of new huntite type borates were grown by TSSG method using eutectic LiBO2–LiF as a flux. Chemical composition, X-ray diffraction, optical absorption and fluorescence spectra of the grown samples were studied.

Endoscopic subureteric implantation of polydimethylsiloxane (Macroplastique(®)) to treat vesico-ureteric reflux is known to be safe and efficient, but long-term complications of this technique are often unknown. A 15-year-old patient was admitted to several hospital services with abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant and chronic limping. After multiple examinations, the diagnosis of renal colic due to the calcification of a Macroplastique(®) implant was made. Calcification of an implant after endoscopic subureteral injection has already been described in the literature, but the clinical presentation of this complication is poorly reported, which can delay the diagnosis. The treatment can consist in an exeresis of the implanted material or even in ureteral reimplantation.

Various mammal species host Anaplasma phagocytophilum (formerly Ehrlichia phagocytophila). This intracellular bacterium is responsible for tick-borne fever, also named granulocytic anaplasmosis, in domestic ruminants. Moreover, A. phagocytophilum is the agent of granulocytic anaplasmosis in humans. The hard tick Ixodes ricinus is known as the main vector of A. phagocytophilum throughout Europe. A. phagocytophilum infects domestic ruminants, e.g. cattle, sheep and goats, in several European countries, e.g. Spain and France. Wild ruminants such as roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in many countries, and chamois (Rupricapra rupricapra) in Switzerland, [1] are reservoirsofA. phagocytophilum. The izard (Rupricapra pyrenaica), another wild ruminant, lives in the Pyrenees mountains. Owing to its grazing habits, it is likely to be exposed to infected ticks. However, to our knowledge, no study has been published on this wild ruminant. The purposes of the present studywere to search for evidence of infection by A. phagocytophilum in French izards and to characterize isolates.

The measurement of ileal digestibility of amino acids is recognized to be a valid tool for the estimation of availability of amino acids. One of the techniques used to obtain this measure - ileal rectal anastomosis - has, however, received a lot of criticism since it has been claimed that the removal of the colon from the active digestive tract leads to the development of a colon-like microflora in the ileum (Köhler et al, 1991). The aim of this experiment was to evaluate if the possible development of microflora affected the ileal digestibility results obtained.

Reducing the protein content of commercial diets in Europe would reduce environmental nitrogen pollution. It has been demonstrated that this could be achieved by employing crystalline amino acid supplementation (e.g. Chavel and Granier, 1994; Fuller et al, 1979a, b). Accurate information on the true ileal digestible amino acid requirements of the modern lean genotype pig is necessary in order to ensure optimal production at low protein intakes. The objective of this study was to identify the optimum ileal digestible methionine:lysine (met:lys) ratio to achieve maximal growth and food conversion efficiency of the lean genotype pig given low protein diets.

1. Maize, wheat and barley meals, and a protein-free diet were each force-fed to 24 intact and 24 caecectomised adult cockerels. For each test, birds were starved of solid food for 48 h, fed, and then excreta collected for 48 h. 2. Quantities of nitrogen (N) and amino acids excreted after feeding the protein-free diet did not differ between intact and caecectomised birds. 3. True digestibility coefficients of N and amino acids did not differ between intact and caecectomised birds. 4. Differences between cereals in apparent digestibility of amino acids were inconsistent and more readily attributed to differences between amino acid intake than bioavailability. 5. Differences between cereals in true digestibility of amino acids were confined to higher values for N, aspartic acid, alanine and leucine in maize than in barley or wheat meals.

An internal hydrogen jet target was built in order to study the energy dependence of the proton-proton interaction from 300 MeV to 3 GeV at the Saturne synchrotron. The target is described and its characteristics are given. Density is about 1014 protons/cm3, diameter ∼1 cm. A comparison is made with other devices.

Cet inventaire des diatomees d'eau douce des iles Kerguelen (Grande Terre) a ete realise a partir de prelevements effectues sur 31 stations representant divers milieux : ruisseaux, rivieres, lacs, rochers suintants. Dans la presente note, 279 taxons ont ete determines, dont 3 sont consideres nouveaux pour la science. La plupart des especes et varietes recensees ont une large repartition geographique ; l'endemisme est restreint. De nombreuses especes sont representees seulement par quelques individus. Si les Pennales presentent une large gamme de genres et d'especes, il n'en est pas de meme pour les Centrales, non seulement du point de vue diversite, mais egalement du point de vue abondance (a l'exception de Melosira distans).

Each of four littermate male pigs of 25 kg liveweight was surgically adapted to create a bypass of the large intestine by ileo-rectal anastomosis. The large intestine was sealed at both ends and a cannula was exteriorised from the lumen to allow any products of residual fermentation to escape. Ileal digesta were excreted via the anus. Three isonitrogenous diets were formulated containing soya-bean or groundnut (dehulled) or sunflower (not dehulled) meals as the sole protein sources. Each diet was fed, in turn, for 7 consecutive days to all pigs, and Heal digesta from feeds on days 5 and 6 (indicated by chromic oxide addition to feeds) were collected. True digestibilities of most essential amino acids, considered individually, in sunflower and groundnut meals were similar to or greater than, those of soyabean meal. Exceptionally, lysine was more digestible in soyabean (0.879) than in sunflower (0.722) or groundnut (0.788) meals.

Aux iles Kerguelen, les monoraphidees sont representees par les deux genres, Cocconeis et Achnanthes. 35 taxons ont ete inventories, dont 2 nouveaux pour la science. La plupart des especes et des varietes ont ete examinees au microscope optique, au microscope electronique a balayage et au microscope electronique a transmission ; une description detaillee de leur morphologie est souvent donnee. Chez plusieurs especes a 'Achnanthes, des vestiges de raphe peuvent etre mis en evidence sur la valve sans raphe. Chez d'autres especes, toujours sur la valve sans raphe, on observe la presence de pores aux extremites de l'aire axiale. Ces "pores" peuvent etre consideres soit comme les vestiges des pores terminaux, soit comme le debut d'un processus vers la formation d'un raphe.

The state of the polarized deuteron source at the Saclay cyclotron is described. In addition to a maximum vector polarization plus or minus 2/3 (reversible), we can also obtain various mixtures of vector and tensor polarization, The asymmetries obtained with such polarized beams are given for several (d,p) reactions. The diagnosis of free hernia remains the most difficult problem in percutaneous lumbar surgery. We thought we could obtain better results by using systematic CT discography (CTD) before percutaneous lumbar discectomy [2–4].

ERRONEOUS diagnoses of neurosyphilis are sometimes made in cases of neurologic syndromes because of a history and serologic evidence of syphilis and the presence of abnormalities in the cerebrospinal fluid. It is generally recognized that examination of the cerebrospinal fluid is essential for the diagnosis of neurosyphilis. As shown in a previous report, 1 the reagents and procedures used in such tests should be quantitatively standardized in order to yield accurate and reproducible results. They should include a cell count, determination of total protein and a colloidal gold test of the cerebrospinal fluid, as well as quantitative complement fixation tests of both the cerebrospinal fluid and the blood. 2 Furthermore, the results of the tests of the cerebrospinal fluid should have a quantitative relation to each other, so that together they form a syndrome reflecting the activity and character of the syphilitic inflammatory process. Evaluation was made of the extent to which amino acids in maize, wheat and barley meals were digested by pigs.Apparent Digestibility (AD) of an individual amino acid was determined as the difference between amino acid intake and amino acid in the ileal digesta, expressed as a percentage of the intake. AD was adjusted to True Digestibility (TD) by correcting for the endogenous amino acid in the digesta, measured after feeding protein-free diets. An attempt was made to account for the possible influence of dietary fibre on digestility determinations by using protein-free diets which provided similar intakes of crude fibre as that achieved with the cereals.4 littermate male pigs (22 kg live weight) were each surgically modified to create an ileo-rectal anastomosis. It is generally recognized that certain types of acquired sinuses and fistulous tracts, resistant to the more ordinary forms of treatment, have been successfully healed by means of the galvanic current. Since none of the cases of pilonidal cysts (sacral fistulas) reported in the literature have been treated by this method, an account is given here of such a case. Pilonidal cysts (sacral fistulas) are considered to be developmental anomalies and have been successfully healed only by complete excision of the tract or tracts. Other methods of treatment, such as incision or cauterization with chemicals, have accomplished only temporary relief. REPORT OF CASE History and Examination. —A hairy, thick set, dark complexioned white man, aged 22, had had a troublesome discharge occurring near the anus for about six months. A year previously he had experienced the same kind of discomfort, but at that time the discharge stopped without any treatment.
