Abstract: Abstract We present a study of Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0 $$ , Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0\eta $$ , and Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η ′ $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\eta}^{\prime } $$ decays using the Belle and Belle II data samples, which have integrated luminosities of 980 fb −1 and 426 fb −1, respectively. We measure the following relative branching fractions B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 / B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + = 0.48 ± 0.02 stat ± 0.03 syst , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η / B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + = 0.11 ± 0.01 stat ± 0.01 syst , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η ′ / B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + = 0.08 ± 0.02 stat ± 0.01 syst $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)=0.48\pm 0.02\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.03\left(\textrm{syst}\right),\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0\eta \right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)=0.11\pm 0.01\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.01\left(\textrm{syst}\right),\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\eta}^{\prime}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)=0.08\pm 0.02\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.01\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\end{array}} $$ for the first time, where the uncertainties are statistical (stat) and systematic (syst). By multiplying by the branching fraction of the normalization mode, B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right) $$ , we obtain the following absolute branching fraction results B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 = 6.9 ± 0.3 stat ± 0.5 syst ± 1.3 norm × 10 − 3 , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η = 1.6 ± 0.2 stat ± 0.2 syst ± 0.3 norm × 10 − 3 , B Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 η ′ = 1.2 ± 0.3 stat ± 0.1 syst ± 0.2 norm × 10 − 3 , $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0\right)=\left(6.9\pm 0.3\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.5\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 1.3\left(\operatorname{norm}\right)\right)\times {10}^{-3},\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0\eta \right)=\left(1.6\pm 0.2\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.2\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.3\left(\operatorname{norm}\right)\right)\times {10}^{-3},\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({\varXi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\eta}^{\prime}\right)=\left(1.2\pm 0.3\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.1\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.2\left(\operatorname{norm}\right)\right)\times {10}^{-3},\end{array}} $$ where the third uncertainties are from B Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right) $$ . The asymmetry parameter for Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 $$ {\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0 $$ is measured to be α Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 π 0 = − 0.90 ± 0.15 stat ± 0.23 syst $$ \alpha \left({\Xi}_c^0\to {\Xi}^0{\pi}^0\right)=-0.90\pm 0.15\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.23\left(\textrm{syst}\right) $$ .

Abstract: Abstract We report measurements of the e + e − → B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ , B B ¯ ∗ $$ B{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ , and B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ cross sections at four energies, 10653, 10701, 10746 and 10805 MeV, using data collected by the Belle II experiment. We reconstruct one B meson in a large number of hadronic final states and use its momentum to identify the production process. In the first 2 – 5 MeV above B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ threshold, the e + e − → B ∗ B ¯ ∗ $$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ cross section increases rapidly. This may indicate the presence of a pole close to the threshold.

Abstract: Abstract We report a determination of the CKM angle ϕ 3, also known as γ, from a combination of measurements using samples of up to 711 fb −1 from the Belle experiment and up to 362 fb −1 from the Belle II experiment. We combine results from analyses of B + → DK +, B + → Dπ +, and B + → D * K + decays, where D is an admixture of D 0 and D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ mesons, in a likelihood fit to obtain ϕ 3 = (75.2 ± 7.6) ° . We also briefly discuss the interpretation of this result.

Abstract: Abstract We present the result of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decay τ − → μ − μ + μ − using a 424 fb −1 sample of data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB e + e − collider. The selection of e + e − → τ + τ − events is based on an inclusive reconstruction of the non-signal tau decay, and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. We observe one signal candidate, which is compatible with the expectation from background processes. We set a 90% confidence level upper limit of 1.9 × 10 −8 on the branching fraction of the τ − → μ − μ + μ − decay, which is the most stringent bound to date.

The sample has an integrated luminosity of 362 ± 2 fb −1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Using an optimised event selection, a binned maximum likelihood fit is performed using the momentum spectra of the electron and muon candidates. The result, R μ = 0.9675 ± 0.0007 ± 0.0036, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, is the most precise to date. It provides a stringent test of the light-lepton universality, translating to a ratio of the couplings of the muon and electron to the W boson in τ decays of 0.9974 ± 0.0019, in agreement with the standard model expectation of unity.

Abstract: Abstract We present measurements of the branching fractions of eight B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D (*)+ K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ , B − → D (*)0 K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ decay channels. The results are based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance collected with the Belle II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 362 fb −1. The event yields are extracted from fits to the distributions of the difference between expected and observed B meson energy, and are efficiency-corrected as a function of m(K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ ) and m(D (*) K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ ) in order to avoid dependence on the decay model. These results include the first observation of B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D + K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ , B − → D* 0 K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ , and B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D* + K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ decays and a significant improvement in the precision of the other channels compared to previous measurements. The helicity-angle distributions and the invariant mass distributions of the K − K S ∗ 0 $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ systems are compatible with quasi-two-body decays via a resonant transition with spin-parity J P = 1− for the K − K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ systems and J P = 1+ for the K − K* 0 systems. We also present measurements of the branching fractions of four B ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ → D (*)+ D s − $$ {D}_s^{-} $$ , B − → D (*)0 D s − $$ {D}_s^{-} $$ decay channels with a precision compatible to the current world averages.

Abstract: Abstract We present an analysis of the process e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) (where n = 1, 2, or 3) reconstructed in 19.6 fb −1 of Belle II data during a special run of the SuperKEKB collider at four energy points near the peak of the Υ(10753) resonance. By analyzing the mass distribution of the π + π − Υ(nS) system and the Born cross sections of the e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) process, we report the first observation of Υ(10753) decays to the π + π − Υ(1S) and π + π − Υ(2S) final states, and find no evidence for decays to π + π − Υ(3S). Possible intermediate states in the π + π − Υ(1S, 2S) transitions are also investigated, and no evidence for decays proceeding via the π ∓ Z b ± $$ {\pi}^{\mp }{Z}_b^{\pm } $$ or f 0(980)Υ(nS) intermediate states is found. We measure Born cross sections for the e + e − → π + π − Υ(nS) process that, combined with results from Belle, obtain the mass and width of Υ(10753) to be (10756.6 ± 2.7 ± 0.9) MeV/c 2 and (29.0 ± 8.8 ± 1.2) MeV, respectively. The relative ratios of the Born cross sections at the Υ(10753) resonance peak are also reported for the first time.

Abstract: Abstract We report results from a study of B ± → DK ± decays followed by D decaying to the CP-even final state K + K − and CP-odd final state K S 0 π 0 $$ {K}_S^0{\pi}^0 $$ , where D is an admixture of D 0 and D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ states. These decays are sensitive to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity-triangle angle ϕ 3. The results are based on a combined analysis of the final data set of 772 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and a data set of 198 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment, both in electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance. We measure the CP asymmetries to be A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP+ = (+12.5 ± 5.8 ± 1.4)% and A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP− = (−16.7 ± 5.7 ± 0.6)%, and the ratios of branching fractions to be R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ CP+ = 1.164 ± 0.081 ± 0.036 and R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ CP− = 1.151 ± 0.074 ± 0.019. The first contribution to the uncertainties is statistical, and the second is systematic. The asymmetries A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP+ and A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP− have similar magnitudes and opposite signs; their difference corresponds to 3.5 standard deviations. From these values we calculate 68.3% confidence intervals of (8.5 ° < ϕ 3 < 16.5 ° ) or (84.5 ° < ϕ 3 < 95.5 ° ) or (163.3 ° < ϕ 3 < 171.5 ° ) and 0.321 < r B < 0.465.

Abstract: Abstract We present the novel implementation of a non-differentiable metric approximation and a corresponding loss-scheduling aimed at the search for new particles of unknown mass in high energy physics experiments. We call the loss-scheduling, based on the minimisation of a figure-of-merit related function typical of particle physics, a Punzi-loss function, and the neural network that utilises this loss function a Punzi-net. We show that the Punzi-net outperforms standard multivariate analysis techniques and generalises well to mass hypotheses for which it was not trained. This is achieved by training a single classifier that provides a coherent and optimal classification of all signal hypotheses over the whole search space. Our result constitutes a complementary approach to fully differentiable analyses in particle physics. We implemented this work using PyTorch and provide users full access to a public repository containing all the codes and a training example.

Abstract: Abstract We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle angle ϕ 3 (also known as γ) using a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of B + → D ( K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ h + h − )h +, where D is either a D 0 or D ¯ $$ \overline{D} $$ 0 meson and h is either a π or K. This is the first measurement that simultaneously uses Belle and Belle II data, combining samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 711 fb −1 and 128 fb −1, respectively. All data were accumulated from energy-asymmetric e + e − collisions at a centre-of-mass energy corresponding to the mass of the Υ(4S) resonance. We measure ϕ 3 = (78.4 ± 11.4 ± 0.5 ± 1.0)°, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third is from the uncertainties on external measurements of the D-decay strong-phase parameters.

13. Effect of Regulated Add-on Sodium Chloride Intake on Stabilization of Serum Lithium Concentration in Bipolar Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Introduction The therapeutic use of lithium in bipolar disorder is often restricted due to its narrow therapeutic window and adverse drug reactions. Lithium-induced early renal dysfunction is clinically important as it may lead to sodium depletion due to natriuresis leading to lithium retention and lithium toxicity. This is most often seen in the initial phases of therapy, and psychiatrists struggle titrating the dose of lithium and stabilizing the serum lithium level. Objectives The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of add-on sodium chloride on serum lithium levels in bipolar disorder. Methods The present randomized controlled trial (NCT04222816) was conducted in 60 patients with type I bipolar disorder who were randomized into the control group who received lithium carbonate with the advice not to take additional salt (at the table) and the test group who received sachets of sodium chloride (1 g/d) as an add-on to lithium carbonate and were advised to restrict their additional salt intake (at the table) to 1 g/d. After baseline assessments, all patients were followed up at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks when serum lithium, sodium and potassium were estimated. Serum creatinine and aldosterone were repeated at 12 weeks. Results In the test group, the fluctuation rate in serum lithium (26.7%) was significantly (p=0.01) lower than in the control group (63.3%). There was a significant difference in serum lithium in the control group at different time points; however, the changes were not significant in the test group. There was a significant difference in serum lithium between the groups at 8 and 12 weeks of follow-up. There were no significant differences in the change in serum sodium, potassium, creatinine, aldosterone, creatinine clearance, and blood pressure within the group and between the groups. A significant positive correlation was found between serum lithium and aldosterone at baseline. Conclusions Intake of add-on sodium chloride (1 gm/day) may reduce the fluctuations in serum lithium during the maintenance phase of lithium therapy in type I bipolar disorder. Abstract: Studies on the optical properties of InGaN alloy of relatively higher indium content are of potential interest to understand the effect of indium content on the optical band gap of epitaxial InGaN. We report the growth of self assembled non-polar high indium clusters of In0.55Ga0.45N over non-polar (11-20) a-plane In0.17Ga0.83N epilayer grown on a-plane (11-20)GaN/(1-102) r-plane sapphire substrate using plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). Such structures are potential candidates for high brightness LEDs emitting in longer wavelengths. The high resolution X-ray diffraction studies revealed the formation of two distinct compositions of InxGa1−xN alloys, which were further confirmed by photoluminescence studies. A possible mechanism for the formation of such structure was postulated which was supported with the results obtained by energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The structure hence grown when investigated for photo-detecting properties, showed sensitivity to both infrared and ultraviolet radiations due to the different composition of InGaN region.

Abstract: An absolute measurement of the Λ_{c}^{+} lifetime is reported using Λ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+} decays in events reconstructed from data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The total integrated luminosity of the data sample, which was collected at center-of-mass energies at or near the ϒ(4S) resonance, is 207.2 fb^{-1}. The result, τ(Λ_{c}^{+})=203.20±0.89±0.77 fs, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, is the most precise measurement to date and is consistent with previous determinations.

Abstract: Bridges are a vital part of the road transportation system used to overcome obstacles like rivers, canals, and roads. Among all the world bridges, the percentage of simple reinforced concrete (R.C.) girders is above eighty percent. In this investigation, the effectiveness of strengthening a simple R.C. girder of a bridge near Pusa Muzaffarpur, Bihar, has been discussed. In this study, a finite element model of a rectangular R.C. beam girder has been addressed on various parameters with and without fiber wrapping. This study covers the potency of different layers of fiber wrapping analyzed with ANSYS′s help, and other results are discussed before and after strengthening the girder. Finally, the strengthening of a delaminated bridge girder near Pusa Bihar using the prescribed fiber wrapping with varying layers has been performed. Static and dynamic load testing of the girder before and after strengthening was executed at the site. Deflection and natural frequency produced at different loading conditions using a loaded truck is discussed. The bridge girder's plasticity has been calculated in terms of deflection recovered when the load was removed.

Abstract: The survival of low rise unconfined masonry structure against earthquakes is very rare even due to low or moderate intensity events. To understand the failure mechanism and cracking pattern of unconfined masonry, a scaled specimen of four unconfined brick was analyzed using finite element software in conjunction with experimental verification. This study started by developing 3D finite element model of unconfined masonry subjected to in-plane loading. Bricks and joints were modeled discretely in the model, allowing for nonlinear deformation characteristics of the both materials. This model exhibits the local effect and is capable of displaying the behavior of masonry walls in which high local stresses and stress gradients are presented in the color contour diagram. The overall result of stress is presented using the von Mises (distortion energy method). The analysis of the model concluded that the unconfined brick masonry specimen structure generally fails along the brick joints, although in-plane shear stresses can cause cracks through the brick in the translation to tensile stress zone.

Abstract: In the present study, a real nuclear power plant (NPP) outer containment structure has been considered for a safety check and the model has been simulated by Abaqus/implicit software. The Three Mile Island (TMI) containment structure has been taken into consideration for the analysis. The dimension of containment is 54.5 m height (without dome) and 45 m inner diameter. A step-by-step analysis was carried out to evaluate the stresses on the NPP wall due to aircraft crash with induced fire. At starting, the impact load 90 MN was applied to the NPP structure using force history curve of Boeing 707-320 aircraft and the angle of impact was considered as normal to the target. After impact, the nodal temperatures were applied to the model through heat transfer analysis using jet fuel curves due to fuel burning. Lastly, the impact and heat transfer effect were combined to get thermal stress behavior. The time gap between the impact of plane’s nose and plane’s wing was kept 0.18 s. Heat transfer analysis has been performed after that time because fuel is stored in wings. The most severe region for the effect of fire is upto 10 m height from the foundation because the maximum fuel will flow to the lowermost of structure. The place of impact was assumed at mid-height of cylindrical portion of TMI containment. The concrete damaged plasticity model for concrete material and Johnson–cook model for steel bar has been taken to incorporate the concrete behavior and reinforcement behavior, respectively. For heat transfer and thermal stress analysis, the parameters and properties of the material at different temperatures were taken from Euro-code 2. From the analysis it can be inferred that there was no global damage due to impact, heat as well as thermal stress in the wall, but certain local damage was found on the outside of the wall.

Abstract: Fiber-reinforced polymer has eventually become a popular choice for retrofitting and strengthening of structural entities. Hence, a need arises to know the quantitative as well as qualitative effect of these techniques on the original integrity of the concerned structural entity. In the present study, the effect of change in width to depth ratio, percentage of steel and loading intensity in a simply supported reinforced concrete (RC) beam on the maximum deflection, stress, strain energy, natural frequencies and deflections of various modes of free vibration is obtained with the help of ANSYS Workbench 19.0 software till the failure of RC beam and a comparison is sought between the original beam and a failed beam retrofitted with one, two and three layers of GFRP sheets (Epoxy S-Glass UD). A standard beam of fixed dimensions and a two point loading was first simulated in the software while comparing the results with the manual calculations of maximum deflections to ascertain the most appropriate settings of the simulation in the three dimensional analysis environment of the software. Various beams were then analyzed altering the width to depth ratio, the percentage of tension steel and the loading intensity over the beam and the results of the static as well as modal (frequency) analysis were noted including the deflections, stresses, strains, strain energies, natural frequencies of first 5 modes of free vibrations and their respective displacements. The same beams were then retrofitted with layers of GFRP sheets with their principal axis inclined at an angle of 45° with the span of the beam. The same analysis was done on the beams and the results were noted. These results are compared, and a multivariate regression analysis is performed over the results to obtain equations to testify the observations and the trends. This whole process gives a conclusion that the effect of retrofitting is insignificant for single layer GFRP while the most effective results were obtained for the case of triple layer GFRP. Deflections, stress and strain energy with their relative change across various cases are accurately related to the varying parameters through regression analysis. Frequency is also accurately related but the relative change in frequency is not well established.

Abstract: Strengthening of prestressed girder using FRP has rarely been performed because prestressed girder has excellent strength under service load in both tension and compression. In this study, retrofitting of a 59-year-old prestressed bridge of Indian railway at Ratlam has been executed in which multiple vertical cracks visualized in tension zone and surface deterioration were observed. Due to this, deterioration speed of the trains over the bridge was restricted up to 20 km/h. The PSC girders of the bridge were strengthened by using prestressed carbon fiber. Serviceability of the structure was monitored before strengthening and after strengthening of the bridge girder. Deflections and natural frequencies after strengthening of girder were monitored for 481 days to ascertain the improvement and consistency in behavior of girder. After strengthening, the considerable decrement in deflection was noted by dint of the speed limit of the train which is recommended to increase up to 100 km/h.

Abstract: The geotechnical characteristics of hydrocarbon-contaminated soils have been an issue of major concern for its inevitable impacts on our surroundings from engineering as well as environmental viewpoints. The impact of hydrocarbon on various geotechnical properties of diversified soils have been reported in the literature. Nevertheless, shear wave velocity (Vs) of hydrocarbon-contaminated soils has not been precisely focused. This paper aims to investigate the shear wave velocity of crude oil contaminated silty sand by performing a series of bender element tests. The key influencing parameter is crude oil content (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12%) in addition to frequency, confining pressure, and depth of contamination. The test results have been discussed for the values obtained within the consistency range of frequency. The results revealed that, petroleum contamination moderately increases the shear wave velocity initially up to a critical amount of crude oil and thereafter falloffs sharply. This critical value has been introduced as the transition point in the Vs profile. The effect of depth of hydrocarbon contamination has been explained in terms of contamination depth ratio (β). In a saturated state, shear wave velocity follows a non-linear trend with increasing depth of contamination and for β > 0.6, no substantial change was observed. There also exists a zero change point at which the positive and negative influences of crude oil contamination get counter-balanced and no net change in shear wave velocity of contaminated sand with respect to clean sand was observed. Beyond this point, the value of Vs drops below that of virgin sand.

Abstract: Context The grey mullet, Mugil cephalus, is an edible fish of high economic importance. Breeding biology with reference to hormonal/growth factor regulation of oocyte maturation needs to be known for its commercial production. Objective The present study was conducted to examine the potency of maturation inducing hormones, chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), bovine-insulin, and insulin like growth factor1 (h-IGF-1) I on ovarian steroidogenesis and oocyte maturation. Design The role of hormones and growth factors on steroidogenesis and oocyte maturation was investigated using specific inhibitors, Wortmannin for phosphatidylinositol-3 (PI3) kinase, trilostane for 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, 1-octanol and 1-heptanol for gap junctions, actinomycin D for transcription and cycloheximide for translation of signal molecules. Methods Actions of hormonal and growth factors were examined for steroidogenesis, by radioimmunoassay and oocyte maturation by germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD). Specific inhibitors were used to determine the cell signaling pathways, PI3 kinase. Results All the inhibitors attenuated the hCG-induced oocyte maturation (GVBD%), steroidogenesis including transcription, translation, gap junctions and PI3 kinase signaling. These inhibitors failed to inhibit h-IGF-I and b-insulin-induced oocyte maturation, steroidogenesis, translation and PI3 kinase signaling. Conclusion hCG induces oocyte maturation via steroid dependent pathway involving gap junctions, transcription, translation and PI3 kinase signaling, unlike h-IGF-I and b-insulin in the mullet.

Abstract: Earthquake-induced soil liquefaction has been a major issue of concern because of its devastating impacts, and the complexity attenuates when the soil is contaminated. The paper assess the liquefaction propensity of crude-oil-contaminated silty sand using UBC3D-PLM constitutive model in PLAXIS 2D which is believed to be one of the most capable model in simulating seismic liquefaction in sands. The applicability of the model has been verified beforehand for its use in oil-contaminated sands. The model parameters have been evaluated by conducting monotonic consolidated drained triaxial test on silty sand contaminated with varying crude oil content (0, 6, 8, and 12% V/W). Numerical simulations have been performed for varying oil content and seismic excitations. The results revealed that oil contamination has a significant effect on liquefaction triggering and settlement response of the soil under seismic loading.

Abstract: The seismic evaluation and retrofit of reinforced concrete (RC) structures considering masonry infills is the correct methodology because the infill walls are an essential part of RC structures and increase the stiffness and strength of structures in seismically active areas. A three-dimensional four-storey building with masonry infills has been analyzed with nonlinear static adaptive pushover analysis by using the SeismoStruct software. Two models have been considered in this study: the first model is a full RC-infilled frame and the second model is an open ground storey RC-infilled frame. The infill walls have been modeled as a double strut nonlinear cyclic model. In this study, the “material strain limit approach” is first time used for the seismic evaluation of RC buildings with masonry infills. This method is based on the threshold strain limit of concrete and steel to identify the actual damage scenarios of the structural members of RC structures. The two models of the four-storey RC building have been retrofitted with local and global strengthening techniques (RC-jacketing method and incorporation of infills) as per the requirements of the structure to evaluate their effect on the response reduction factor (R) because the R-factor is an important design tool that shows the level of inelasticity in a structure. A significant increase in the response reduction factor (R) and structural plan density (SPD) has been observed in the case of the open ground storey RC-infilled frame after the retrofit. Thus, this paper aims to present a most effective way for the seismic evaluation and retrofit of any reinforced concrete structure through the material strain limit approach.

Abstract: To optimize the use of available land area and to meet the multiple demands of food and forest cover, planning and process use a series of cooperative, iterative steps to characterize existing conditions, identify and prioritize problems of land and water resources, define management objectives, and develop and implement protection or remediation strategies as necessary through watershed development-based programs. A watershed plan is a strategy and a work plan for achieving water resource goals that provide assessment and management information for a geographically defined watershed. Remote sensing and GIS, which plays an important role in detecting and monitoring the physical characteristics of watershed area by reflected and emitted radiation, is also efficiently used for watershed management. In the present study an attempt has been made to study the extensive use of GIS in watershed management. For this purpose, Khajuri Watershed is selected which is situated at the border of Marihan block. The study area is almost fully covered by metamorphic rocks, which include different limestone, gneiss and sandstone. The area’s topography is generally mountainous and rugged dissected by many distributaries of Khajuri river. The catchment covers an area of about 126 km2 (30,000 acres or 12,600 ha). Three commercially available GIS software tools are used in this project, which are ARCMAP v 8.1, ArcView and ERDAS IMAGINE v 8.5. ARCMAP is used as a tool to create and manage geographic information, and ArcView is used as a tool to visualize, explore, query, interpolate, update and analyze geographic information. As the total area is very large, it is sub-divided into sub-watersheds and micro watersheds to determine the available water resources of the study area, current water demand and future projection and technological options for water resource management and, in turn, to improve water availability and management of crop yield of a watershed, largely for optimum utilization of water resources to derive maximum benefits.

Abstract: The increased utilization of skew plates in thin-walled structural components of aircrafts, submarines, automobiles, and other high-performance application areas have necessitated a strong need to understand their characteristics. This paper presents the bending analysis of isotropic skewed plates using the finite element software ABAQUS Simulia. Modeling was done in ABAQUS Simulia using the SC8R element as it gave better results for shell structures. An analysis is done on skew plates of various skew angles and aspect ratios with all end clamps subjected to uniform pressure and the results are generated. The effect of skew angle, aspect ratio, and thickness of the plate on various parameters like bending and torsional moments, support shear, and deflection are separately presented which may serve as a benchmark for further research. From the results, it is observed that the maximum central deflection decreases with an increase in skew angle. The negative reaction was found to develop at the acute angle corners and it increased as the skew angle increased. Bending moments were found to decrease and torsion was found to increase with an increase in skew angle.

Abstract: In the present work, the static response of symmetric and anti-symmetric laminated composite and sandwich plates is investigated for elevated temperature and moisture conditions. Analysis is carried out using recently developed zigzag model which is based on a trigonometric (secant) shear deformation in the plate. The theory incorporates inter-laminar shear stress continuity along with the traction free boundary conditions at the top and bottom surfaces. The finite element method is employed for analysis, using the eight noded isoparametric serendipity element, accounting for the C 0 continuity. Numerous examples covering the various features such as effect of thermal and moisture coefficients, material anisotropy , boundary and loading conditions and span to thickness ratio are solved for symmetric as well as anti-symmetric plates. Results in the form of deflection and stresses are presented and validated with the available results in the existing literature. Further, few new results are also provided in this work, to set a benchmark study for the future research.

Abstract: The frequency of the occurrence of earthquake has risen in the last decade and the casualties with low-rise structure, especially unconfined structure, were very high in comparison to reinforced concrete structure worldwide. In this study, the behaviour of confined building in lateral load has investigated. A confined building model has been constructed in the laboratory with the help of scaled bricks, mortar and reinforcement. The building model is tested on shake table under external excitation force of different magnitudes and frequencies. With the help of PULSE Labshop, the values of displacement, velocity and acceleration are measured at different locations of model. The response of the four-storey building model is measured and presented, and the response of the building is analysed under harmonic vibration.

To understand the lateral load capacity of any low-rise masonry building, a 3D finite element model of unconfined brick masonry stack has been drawn here. The ANSYS modeling of plain brick masonry shows that masonry structure fails at the joint. Therefore, to impart ductility and strength in the stack, shear key of 4 mm diameter TMT bar of 1/8th, 1/6th, and 1/4th of longitudinal length of brick length is provided at every joint separately in different samples and performance of both confined and unconfined prism is tested against vertical and horizontal load [2]. The purpose of this study was to develop a better behavior of low-rise masonry building during earthquake. Numerical as well as experimental methods have been adapted to calculate the stress developed in masonry stack [3].

Abstract: Noise is a world-wide problem that causes nervous, endocrine and cardiovascular disorders, and eventually health hazards in humans and animals. Objective of the current work is to investigate endocrine interaction in noise stress, which subsequently affects other endocrine functions including gonads in a poultry bird like chicks. Gravimetric, ultrastructural and hormonal status of the endocrine organs were examined to ascertain the effects of noise stress. Acute noise at 60 dB had no effect, but at 80 and 100 dB each for 3 h, increased pineal and serum serotonin, and adrenal and serum corticosterone, epinephrine and norepinephrine concentrations, without any change in thyroid or gonadal hormones. Chronic noise exposure at 60, 80 and 100 dB each for 6 h, daily for 7 days, drastically disturbed normal behavior, and quantum of food consumption and water intake. Chronic exposure also significantly decreased body weight including thyroid, ovary and testis weight, and increased adrenal weight. Noise stress caused ultrastructural changes leading to stimulations of pinealocytes (with abundance of rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria), adrenocortical cells (enlarged nuclei and abundance of smooth endoplasmic reticulum) and adrenomedullary cells (enlarged nuclei with presence of chromaffin granules) were observed in noise stress. Additionally, pineal and serum serotonin, N-acetyl serotonin and melatonin, and adrenal and serum corticosterone, epinephrine and norepinephrine levels were significantly elevated following chronic noise exposure. Contrarily, thyroid activity was suppressed with atrophied thyroid follicles followed by declined levels of serum T3 and T4 with elevation of TSH level. Simultaneously, serum 17β-estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) concentrations were also significantly declined in all the doses of chronic noise. These changes were dose dependent of noise exposure. The findings suggest that (a) adrenal and pineal glands respond primarily to noise and secondarily act on other endocrine organs including gonads in chicks, (b) adrenal directly and/or indirectly causes thyroid and gonadal dysfunctions via pineal following noise exposure in chicks.

Abstract: Two continuous lattice steel truss bridges spanning 190 m with subdivided top chord members were constructed on the same design across river Alaknanda at Dugadda and Srinagar, respectively, in Uttarakhand, India. Both bridges were similar in design and geometry having middle span of 110.0 m and two end spans of 40.0 m. Garudchatti bridge at Dugadda was constructed first and opened to traffic, but excessive vibrations and lifting of end supports under live load condition were observed. Construction of Chauras bridge at Srinagar started later, but it collapsed during casting of the deck slab due to buckling of one of its top chord compression members. Failure of Chauras bridge led to the serious concerns in the minds of people and technocrats about the safety of Garudchatti bridge also, because it was constructed using the same design of Chauras bridge. Therefore, it was decided to strengthen and carry out load testing of Garudchatti bridge before reopening to the traffic. In the present work analyses of Garudchatti bridge are presented to identify structurally unsafe members for most severe live loads given in IRC:6-2010 code, and recommendations for strengthening of the critical members. Finite element space frame analyses of the bridge were carried out using STAAD Pro. v8i software to find excessively stressed members beyond their permissible stress limit. The critical compression members were strengthened by welding additional channel sections. RCC anchor blocks were constructed to restrict lifting of end supports under live load. After strengthening, load testing of the bridge was performed to ensure the safety of the bridge. The bridge is now reopened for traffic. In the past a number of bridges have collapsed during load testing. In case of any shortcoming in the design or overloading during load testing, compression members of the truss may suddenly buckle and cause collapse of the bridge. Therefore, it is not advisable to load test steel truss bridges which do not have adequate margin beyond the service load condition.

Abstract: Enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) is an innovative bio-inspired approach that has emerged in recent years, offering a more environmentally sustainable option for soil improvement. The present article aims at extensively examining the effect of EICP treatment on the cyclic response of silty sands containing petroleum hydrocarbon compounds. Strain-controlled cyclic triaxial tests have been carried out on hydrocarbon contaminated sand with and without EICP treatment. Several independent variables such as hydrocarbon content (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10%), shear strain amplitudes (0.5% and 1%), and curing period (7 days and 14 days) were considered in the study. Prior to this, a baseline analysis was conducted to determine the effect of EICP treatment solution composition on the efficiency of carbonate precipitation. The effectiveness of the treatment was systematically investigated based on cyclic pore pressure response and degradation of cyclic shear modulus. The results revealed that petroleum contamination moderately increases the cyclic resistance up to a transition point beyond which it falls off sharply. The coupled effect of increasing oil content and curing time of EICP treatment has also been assessed. The variation of cyclic strength with crude oil content results in a single-peaked profile for both untreated and treated specimens. EICP treatment increases the cyclic resistance of oil-contaminated sand up to 1.5 times by suppressing the excess pore pressure build-up. A signification recovery in the degradation parameter, as high as 80%, was also observed. However, with increasing oil content and shear strain levels, the efficacy of EICP treatment exhibited a remarkable decline. The microstructural mechanism believed to be responsible for such a behavior has also been discussed.

Abstract: The primary focus of this study is to evaluate the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete (RC) frames with two types of brick infills viz., unreinforced brick masonry infill (URM) and semi-interlocked brick masonry infill (SIM) together with lintel beams, subjected to seismic loads. The seismic response is quantified in terms of response reduction factor and base shear. Infill walls are modeled using double strut nonlinear cyclic element. Nonlinear static adaptive pushover analysis is performed in the finite element program SeismoStruct. The response reduction factor (R) is computed from adaptive pushover analysis and performance for all models is obtained. The results showed that the average R factor of the RC framed structure with semi-interlocked masonry (SIM) is 1.31 times higher than the RC frame with unreinforced masonry (URM) infill. The R value of the bare frame with the lintel beam is found to be less than the corresponding value recommended in the Indian Standard Code. The results obtained in this study highlight that if the impacts of lintel beams and various brick infill scenarios are considered in the RC frames then the R values used for the design of RC frame buildings with infills would be underestimated (i.e., the evaluated R values are greater than the R values used for the design purpose).

Abstract: Background: Hyperuricemia is considered to be associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. It has been found to be related to features of metabolic syndromes like hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. Sodium-glucose transport protein 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are known to have a decremental effect on serum uric acid level. We evaluated the effect of SGLT2 inhibitors on serum uric acid of diabetic population.Methods: In this prospective study we recruited 50 type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients who were on metformin monotherapy and were having inadequate glycemic control. Patients were prescribed SGLT2 inhibitors as an add-on therapy. Serum uric acid of the subjects was measured at the baseline and after 3 months. The primary outcome was to observe changes in serum uric acid (SUA) levels from the baseline to the end of the study. Glycemic changes were determined by observing the changes in glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels (if any).Results: The study population was predominantly male (82%). BMI wise most of the subjects (44%) were overweight. Mean HbA1c of total population was 7.65±0.5, whereas mean serum uric acid was 6.31±0.72 at the baseline. The study has revealed that there are distinct regional differences in the male genital tract. The ductuli efferentes have three types of cells, long-ciliated, short-ciliated, and microvilli-bordered cells. The proximal epididymis has two types of cells, microvilli-bordered cells and smooth-surfaced cells; the distal epididymis has only tall, smooth-surfaced cells. The vas deferens contains both smooth-surfaced and microvilli-bordered cells. Cells of the genital tract in July show several differences from comparable cells in January: Ciliated cells of the ductuli efferentes have longer cilia, cells of the proximal epididymis have microvilli distended by secretory materials, and cell apices in the distal epididymis are surmounted by an abundance of huge secretory blebs. There is no discernible change in the vas deferens. The findings suggest that all segments of the male genital tract, except the vas deferens, become active in July and have regressed by January in the annual sexual cycle.

Abstract: Vortices are formed when a structural element placed in fluid’s flow path. These vortices shed are alternatively, and consequently the structure undergoes vortex-induced vibration in cross-direction. This present study is based on two-dimensional simulation of the vortex-induced vibrations of circular cylinder in an unsteady fluid flow. Aim of the study is to find out the effect of natural frequency of cylinder on its vortex-induced vibration. Smooth circular cylinder is simulated in cross-flow condition using k-e model of RANS equations in Ansys Fluent. The simulations are carried out for higher Reynolds numbers ranging from 5 × 104 to 50 × 104. The drag and lift force coefficients are found for the cylinder by varying natural frequencies of structure for each Reynolds number in upper subcritical regime. Wake pattern is carefully studied when cylinder is going under cross-flow oscillation, and its dependency on natural frequency of structure is observed.

Abstract: Betel nut of Areca catechu is chewed by millions of people for increased capacity to work and stress reduction, but it contains arecoline that causes hypothyroidism. The aim is to investigate the role of arecoline on thyroid activity in cold stress in mice. Arecoline treatment (10 mg/kg body wt/day, for 7 d) caused a reduction in thyroid weight and ultrastructural degeneration of thyro-follicular cells with depletion of T3 and T4 levels compared with the control mice. Cold stress (4 °C for 2 h, twice daily, for 7 d) stimulated thyroid activity ultrastructurally with an elevation of T3 and T4 levels. Arecoline treatment in cold stress suppressed thyroid activity by showing reversed changes to those of cold stress. In contrast, TSH concentrations were consistently increased under all experimental conditions. The findings suggest that cold stress causes hyperthyroidism which arecoline can ameliorate in mice.

Abstract: Millions of people consume betel nut for increased capacity to work and for stress reduction. The nut contains arecoline, which has multiple side effects on endocrine functions. Objective of the work is to investigate pineal-testicular responses to noise and after arecoline treatment in noise in rats. Noise exposure (100 dB, 6 h daily, 10 days) caused pineal stimulation ultrastructurally and at indoleamines level. Leydig cell dysfunction with fall of testosterone level and suppression of sex accessories were noticed. In contrast, pineal activity was inhibited and reproductive functions were stimulated after arecoline administration, confirmed from reversed changes to those of noise. Arecoline treatment in noise exposure showed same results as in noise both in pineal and in reproductive functions. It is concluded that noise causes testicular dysfunction probably by gonadotropin suppression induced by pineal melatonin in noise. Furthermore, arecoline cannot prevent it in noise in rats.
