This study identifies the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory potential of a fatty acid methyl ester segregated from the brown algae Turbinaria ornata and identified by nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry as methyl 6,12-dimethyltridecanoate (ET). Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of ET were studied on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory reaction in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Moreover, in silico docking studies of isolated ET with inflammatory markers TNFα, NFκB, and COX-2 showed potent binding scores suggesting anti-inflammatory potential. ET significantly reduced LPO and increased LPS-induced SOD, catalase, and GSH levels. Molecular docking results were further confirmed by checking mRNA levels of selected cytokines (IL6 and IL10), followed by protein expression of iNOS and NFκB in LPS-induced macrophages. ET significantly upregulated the expression of IL10 and downregulated the expression of IL6, iNOS, and NFκB, confirming the inhibition of LPS-induced inflammation via the iNOS/NFκB pathway.

To study the etiology of ptosis among 20 - 50 years of age and analyse the management and surgical outcomes of various types of ptosis using different surgical modalities. This prospective study was conducted at Tertiary Eye Care centre in Chennai from July 2018 - June 2019.It included all patients with ptosis between the age of 20 - 50 years after excluding vascular malformations and malignant tumours of the lid. Here all variables are described with frequency distribution and displayed using percentage. Incidence of congenital ptosis was 11 cases (37%), aponeurotic ptosis 8 cases (26%), myogenic ptosis 4 cases (13%), neurogenic ptosis 3 cases (10%), mechanical ptosis. 2 cases (7%), post traumatic ptosis 2 cases (7%). 70% were males and the remaining 30% were females. Among 30 cases, 23 patients had unilateral and 7 patients had bilateral ptosis. Moderate ptosis (3-4mm) (46.7%) formed a major composition of our study shortly followed by severe ptosis (43.3%). Out of 30 cases, 9 cases were managed medically (30%) and surgical intervention was required in 21 cases (70%). Out of 7 bilateral ptosis, 2 cases were managed medically and 5 cases needed surgical intervention. Complications following frontalis sling were under correction (27.3%) in 3 cases followed by mild corneal exposure keratitis (9.1%) in one patient. Complications following levator advancement were under correction in one case (12.5%) and mild lid peaking in one case (12.5%). Among 2 cases of mechanical ptosis, one was squamous papilloma and other was a large chalazion. Out of 4 myogenic cases 3 cases were due to myasthenia and the other diagnosed to have CPEO. 2 cases of traumatic ptosis were due to traumatic 3rd nerve palsy and traumatic levator dehiscence. The most common acquired ptosis was aponeurotic followed by myogenic, neurogenic, traumatic and mechanical ptosis. Frontalis sling surgery is the most common surgery done for congenital ptosis. Use of polypropylene as a suspensory material gives a good functional outcome. Aponeurotic advancement surgery is the most common surgery performed for acquired ptosis.

Tonsillectomy is an age old surgery especially in pediatric population. Over the last few years, various techniques have been proposed in performing tonsillectomy in an attempt to lower the morbidity and mortality. This study compares the post-operative pain scale of cold dissection method and newer methods like coblation, radiofrequency and bipolar cautery assisted tonsillectomy. In our prospective study, we selected 30 patients and randomly divided them into three groups. We had performed right side tonsillectomy in each divided group of ten with coblation, radiofrequency and bipolar cautery assisted and on left side tonsillectomy dissection and snare method to all subjects. We compared post-operative pain scale on the right and left side in next consecutive 3 post-operative days by using VAS of Wong–Baker. Of these 30 patients mean age is 10 ± 3 years and there is no significant sex distribution. In group 1 right side bipolar cautery (hot) method, pain scale was on 3 consecutive post-operative days (6.1 ± 1.5), (6.0 ± 1.5), (5.2 ± 0.9) when compared to left side cold method (p value 0.06). In group 2 right side coblation (hot) method, post-operative pain scale was (2.9 ± 1.6), (2.4 ± 1.6), (1.2 ± 1.4) which when compared to left side cold method showed that pain was significantly reduced (p value 0.03). In group 3 right side radiofrequency (hot) method post-operative pain scale was (4.6 ± 1.0), (2.5 ± 1.2), (1.5 ± 1.4) when compared to left side cold method pain (p value 0.08). This study revealed that coblation assisted hot tonsillectomy has less pain when compared to other techniques with normal cold method. It also has early recovery.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the notorious diabetes associated complications. Despite many therapeutic strategies available, metabolic control of DN continues to poses a challenge. In this study, the interactions of mangiferin with selected oral hypoglycemic drugs, metformin and gliclazide to effectively alleviate the symptoms of renal injury in DN are evaluated. Male Sprague Dawley rats were used as experimental model and type II diabetes was induced by administration of high fat diet and low dose streptozotocin. Oral intervention of mangiferin with metformin and gliclazide for a period of 28 days was given to diabetic rats. At the end of the treatment period, biochemical parameters, kidney function markers, anti-oxidant enzymes levels, oxidative stress mediated gene expression and histology were analysed. Significant reduction in the serum biochemical markers (glucose, urea and creatinine) were observed in the groups treated with combination drugs. Marked improvement in the combination treated groups in terms of inflammation and oxidative damage in the gene (TNFα, NFκB, TGFβ, VEGF, PKC) and protein expression (NFκB, VEGF) were noted in the kidney tissue alleviating the symptoms of DN. These results were further corroborated with histopathological results. Scientific data in the present study reveals that the combinations of mangiferin with the oral hypoglycemic drugs have been favorable in alleviating renal injury. Hence, a combination therapy to alleviate the vascular complication, diabetic nephropathy may be considered as a possible therapeutic strategy by including natural phytocompounds as an add on therapy to conventional oral hypoglycemic drugs.

Background Dyslipidemia a common pathology in metabolic syndrome results due to various factors. Although statins are proven for its beneficial role in the management of hyperlipidemia, plant-based foods and their ingredients are still a cornerstone of health care and medical prescriptions. Legumes are important constituents of a balanced diet. They are rich in fiber and provide health benefits and are used to treat disease related pathologies. Purpose The present study intended to identify the influence of two legumes, horsegram and groundnut individually and with atorvastatin in high fat diet induced hyperlipidemic rats and trace if there is any adverse effect due to food drug interactions. Methods Hyperlipidemia in Sprague Dawley rats were induced by feeding high fat diet for 12 weeks. Subsequently, supplementation of horsegram and groundnut with and without atorvastatin was given for 4 weeks. The physiological indicators (body weight, feed intake, fat index), biochemical parameters (cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose, urea and creatinine) including markers of oxidative stress (catalase, GST, SOD, TBARS and GSH), mRNA expression markers of lipid metabolism and inflammation markers (SREBP-1, ACC, FABP, HMG-CoAR, NF-kB and IL-6) and the protein expression of HO-1 and NF-kB followed by histopathological analysis of the heart, liver and kidney tissues were checked to study the influence of the legumes with and without atrovastatin. Results Results showed that administration of the legumes individually and their combination with atorvastatin significantly reduced the body weight, feed intake, fat index, biochemical metabolites and enzymatic markers in comparison to the HFD group. In addition, it also decreased the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant levels. Likewise, the legumes individually as well as in combination with atorvastatin significantly decreased the protein expression of HO-1 and NF-kB. Further, histopathological analysis confirmed the influence of the legumes and its combination to overcome hyperlipidemia as evidenced by the pathological changes in the treated rats. Conclusion The results of the present work confirm that the legumes individually as well as its combination with atorvastatin are helpful to manage hyperlipidemia. On comparison, horsegram with atorvastatin possess a better therapeutic efficacy when compared to groundnut with atorvastatin and there is no evidence of food drug interactions.

A sedentary lifestyle combined with the intake of high-calorie diet has been the paramount cause of metabolic syndrome (MS) which is now a serious concern of public health worldwide as it involves the coexistence of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, glucose intolerance, and obesity. Hence, identifying a suitable strategy to overcome the worldwide menace of MS is imperative. Macrotyloma uniflorum a lesser known legume is highly nutritious and notable for its ethano-medicinal potential. Herein, the influence of M. uniflorum in high-fat dietinduced metabolic changes in a rodent model of metabolic syndrome was evaluated. Serum levels of glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, VLDL-c, and bodyweight were decreased, whereas HDL-c was increased in M. uniflorum-treated MS rats. The protein expression (AMPK-α, PPAR-α, and PPAR-γ) and gene expression (leptin, adiponectin, resistin, UCP2, NF-κB, and IL-6) results are impressive to highlight that M. uniflorum modulates the pathological conditions of MS and proves to be cardioprotective. Furthermore, the histopathological analysis confirmed the pathological changes and substantiates the influence of M. uniflorum to overcome MS. The HPLC and GC (MS) profiling reveals the presence of an array of polyphenols such as rutin (694.61 μg/g), catechin (500.12 μg/g), epicatechin (158.10 μg/g), gallic acid (17.98 μg/g), ferulic acid (10.911 μg/g), daidzein (6.51 μg/g), and PUFA, respectively, which probably exhibits the therapeutic effect on MS and associated complications by modulating lipid metabolism and adipogenesis. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Metabolic disorders like CVD and diabetes are leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. With emerging issues on adverse effects of modern drugs, the emphasis on "Food is Medicine and Medicine as Food" has taken dramatic dimensions in the healthcare sector. Therefore, nutraceuticals are in great demand in the developed world off late. Legumes, are potent elements in a balanced diet next to cereals. Exploring the medicinal properties of legumes could bring a revolution in public health and nutraceutical industries. This study scientifically validated the phytochemicals in M. uniflorum for its functional potential in the management of Metabolic Syndrome (MS). This study would help the nutraceutical industries to develop functional foods using M. uniflorum seeds to make porridges and soups or nutraceutical supplements with the bioflavonoids isolated from M. uniflorum for the management of metabolic disorders by mitigating hyperlipidemia, oxidative stress, and inflammation.

Eagle’s syndrome is one of the commonly overlooked cause of foreign body sensation in throat with referred otalgia. Incidence of symptomatic cases was rare. Elongated Styloid process may present with myriad symptoms. The diagnosis needs a cautious approach and the management is mainly aimed at reduction of the length of elongated section. Prospective study in the Department of ENT Stanley Medical College, Chennai. Study period-January 2018 to September 2018. Clinical examination followed by radiological investigations done to confirm the diagnosis. Stylo-tonsillectomy was done in the selected 20 subjects and post-operative outcomes were compared with pre-operative questionnaires. The progression of symptoms were evaluated for resolution and studied. Pharyngeal symptoms are more common. The length of styloid is associated with symptom complex presentation. The incidence was 0.17% in general population coming to ENT OPD and more common among women with mean age of 43 years. Bilateral presentation was more common and the longest length recorded in the study was 78 mm. Single investigation is not enough to confirm the diagnosis. A minimum of two investigations are needed for planning surgical management. Intra-oral approach with stylo-tonsillectomy was done with no major complications in post-operative period. Pre-operative symptoms were recoreded by use of McGill’s pain questionnaire and compared with post-operative scores. Dysphagia was the major post-operative early symptom which took a week minimum to subside. Clinical findings and atleast 2 imaging studies needed for diagnosis of the disorder. OPG though economical can be aided to great extent by use of Conebeam CT or 3D CT to study the elongated styloid process. Stylo-tonsillectomy is a safer approach with minimum complications and earlier relief of pre-operative symptoms. Surgical management with reduction of length of elongated styloid followed by adequate analgesia remains mainstay in treatment.

Background Marine macroalgae known for its polysaccharides exhibit potent biomedical properties and its potential as an anti-inflammatory agent has increased in the recent past as inflammation is a major pathology noted in many chronic diseases. Purpose The present study investigates the anti-inflammatory potential of a sulfated polysaccharide (PS) isolated from the marine algae Turbinaria ornata collected from the Indian waters on LPS induced inflammation in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Study design and methods PS isolated from the macroalgae was characterized using ESI(MS) and was screened for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential in RAW 264.7 cells by assessing markers of oxidative stress, and inflammation. Results LPS significantly increased the levels of LPO and LDH in RAW 264.7 cells which were significantly reduced in PS pre-treatment groups. Pretreatment significantly increased the antioxidants GSH and SOD and significantly reduced mRNA levels of IL6 and TNFα in vitro confirming its anti-inflammatory potential. NFκB and iNOS were significantly modulated by PS confirming the probable mode of action. Conclusion Altogether, it can be concluded that PS isolated from Turbinaria ornata collected from the Southeast Coast of India exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential probably mediated by the sulfated polysaccharide containing glucopyranose and fucopyranose moieties.

In the present work, we isolated, characterized and examined the anticancer effect of bioactive molecules from Acanthophora spicifera (red algae) on A549 and HeLa cancer cell lines and compared with normal HEK cells. Among the different solvent fractions subjected to chromatographic purification, three molecules isolated showed potential cytotoxicity and induced apoptosis in a dose dependent manner. The structure of the active components was identified as Cholest-4-ene-3,6-dione, (1) a steroid and two non-steroid molecules namely 2-bromohexandecanoic acid (2) and 6-bromo indole (3) by GC–MS, FTIR and NMR (1H &13C) analysis. Compound 1 exhibited better cytotoxicity with an IC50 of 10.01 ± 0.11 μM (A549) and 12.32 ± 0.08 μM (HeLa) (1) than that of compound (2) IC50 of 72.6 ± 0.10 μM (A549), 26.42 ± 0.11 μM (HeLa) and (3) 108.2 ± 0.15 μM (A549) and 71.68 ± 0.60 μM (HeLa) at 24 h. Mechanistic investigation on apoptosis by the selected compounds was further confirmed by dual AO/EB and Annexin-V/PI staining assay. Interestingly, compound 1 also displayed remarkable loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP assay), increased level of reactive oxygen species (ROS assay) and cell cycle arrest at sub-G1 phase. Further, Western blot analysis confirmed the involvement of caspase signaling cascade in A549 cell death by compound 1. Our findings demonstrate that the red alga Acanthophora spicifera from Gulf of Mannar is a potent source of these bioactive leads with an efficient anticancer activity mediated by apoptosis and autophagy.

Background Inflammation and oxidative stress are common pathologies in a wide range of chronic diseases. Polysaccharides are known to exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential and are suggested to possess immunomodulatory potential. Purpose Herein, the immunomodulatory activity of a sulfated polysaccharide (PS) separated from a brown marine algae Turbinaria ornata is studied in LPS instigated systemic inflammation in experimental rats. Study design and methods Male SD rats are pretreated with different doses of PS (2.5, 5, 10 mg/kg bw) for a week followed by inducing systemic inflammation using LPS (10 mg/kg i.p.). Blood withdrawn after 8 h of LPS injection is subjected to hematological analysis (WBC, HCT, and PLT). After 24 h of LPS induction, cardiac tissue was isolated and subjected to biochemical, molecular, and histopathological analysis. Effect of PS pre-treatment (2.5, 5, 10 mg/kg bw) was checked by assessing serum parameters (AST, CK-MB, and γGT), antioxidant markers (LPO, GSH, SOD, Grx) and inflammatory markers (IL1β, IL6, IL10, NFκB), followed by analyzing the iNOS, PI3k and Akt to identify the probable mode of action. Results Elevated levels of AST, CK-MB, and γGT in serum were significantly reduced on PS pretreatment. LPS significantly raised the LPO and Grx levels in heart tissue whereas, PS pre-treatment significantly reduced LPO and Grx levels. GSH and SOD levels were reduced upon LPS induction and were brought to near normal by HD of PS. PS also reduced the mRNA levels of IL6, Trx, and increased IL10 levels in the heart tissue substantiating its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potency. Further, IL1β, NFκB, iNOS, and pPI3k/pAkt expressions were significantly modulated by PS in the cardiac tissue substantiating the immunomodulatory effect. A trend of improvement in the inflammatory pathology was also observed in the heart tissue compared to LPS control, as confirmed by histopathology analysis. Conclusion Altogether, this study concludes the immunomodulatory potential of PS from the marine macroalgae Turbinaria ornata significantly and prevents LPS induced systemic inflammation in the cardiac tissue presumably influenced by the glucopyranose and fucopyranose subunits in the polysaccharide.

T. ornata a macroalgae rich in bioactive molecules possess various biological activities. Herein, the aim of the study is to evaluate the aqueous extract and the sulphated polysaccharide isolated from T. ornata for its anti-arthritic potential in Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA) induced arthritis in rats. Anti-arthritic potential of aqueous T. ornata (ATO) and T. ornata sulphated polysaccharide (TSP) was evidenced by the significant reduction in paw volume and arthritic score. Inflammatory and antioxidant markers were found to be restored in the drug treated groups which was found to be in line with dexamethasone a standard anti-inflammatory drug. The histopathological and radiological examination adds on the support to the above findings confirming the anti-arthritic potential of ATO and TSP. It is interesting to note that the sulphated polysaccharide inhibits inflammation and bone damage at very low dose itself. Hence, TSP could be considered as a better candidate in the management of chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in the incidence of rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM). Many states have declared the disease an epidemic and have made it notifiable. ROCM continues to be a challenge both to clinicians and patients. We have a stellar panel of experts, who are also part of the Tamilnadu mucormycosis advisory committee, who will be sharing pointers regarding the early diagnosis and challenges faced in the management of ROCM.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea is common in traumatic penetrating nasal injuries. In the pediatric age group, we often encounter self-inflicted foreign body injuries of blunt type, which rarely leads to any complications. We came across a case of CSF rhinorrhea due to self-inflicted penetrating nasal injury, after 7 years of initial injury. In this case, the sharp end of a screw nail had injured the fovea ethmoidalis and caused a meningoencephalocele on removal, which had been asymptomatic until 4 years ago, when the patient came with CSF rhinorrhea. Positioning of patient and adjusting the microscope to achieve adequate field of view is crucial for a comfortable cataract surgery. When there are hindrances to such an ideal positioning, several strategies have to be adopted to facilitate the surgery. Kyphosis, characterized by excessive curvature of the thoracic spine is one such condition. This case report illustrates an elderly male presenting with severe visual impairment and circumstances making surgery inevitable. The emphasis is to understand the ingenuine measures to be taken to tackle the challenges faced in such a scenario.

Background: Penetrating neck injuries are very common as a mode of homicidal and suicidal injuries. Not many of them are deep enough to affect the laryngeal framework.Methods: Prospective study in the Department of ENT Stanley Medical College, Chennai. The study period was from January 2018 to December 2018. Follow up of 3 months was done.Results: Penetrating neck injuries treated on emergency care with tracheostomy and wound exploration and repair. It was found to be more common in young male population.Conclusions: Laryngeal framework involvement necessitates tracheostomy during wound exploration. On table laryngeal injury repair improves prognosis and early post-operative vocal fold assessment helps frame a treatment plan designed specifically for the patient.

Background: Pathologies of salivary glands are common in the general population. Of them few are neoplasms-benign or malignant. The presentation of salivary gland pathologies are both to general surgeons and otorhinolaryngologists of the same hospital. The presentation to concerned treating surgeon is based on the symptoms during presentation. This study aims at the various types of salivary gland pathologies requiring surgical intervention and the rate of recurrence following surgery in a single department.Methods: Retrospective study was conducted. Study period was from May 2017 to February 2019. All salivary gland neoplasms were studied for presentation and recurrence following surgery. Results: Intraoperative difficulties and post-operative complications more common in malignant tumors. Female gender is more commonly affected by benign neoplasms. There is no gender predilection in malignant neoplasms. Facial nerve is most common nerve to get affected in pre-operative and during surgery as well.Conclusions: Neoplasms of salivary glands are common in females though it has equal incidence in malignancy. Facial nerve is most commonly affected as complication in malignant neoplasms.

Tert-butyl 2,2-bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)ethanoate was prepared from the ethanolic solution of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene, tert-butyl 3-oxobutanoate and triethylamine. Acetyl group in tert-butyl 3-oxobutanoate has cleaved off during the formation of the title molecule. UV–VIS, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, Proton–Proton COSY data and single crystal XRD results support the proposed structure. Flammability test, impact sensitivity test and TG/DTA studies at different heating rates on the synthesized molecule imply that it is an insensitive high energy density material. Background: Myringoplasty is a common ear surgery performed all over the world. This study is focused on prospective comparative study using two different graft materials.Methods: This was a prospective study done in the Department of ENT Stanley Medical College, Chennai during the period from March 2013 to September 2013. Sample size was 60 patients. Follow up was done till 6 months. Results: Graft acceptance was achieved in 28 patients (93%) who underwent palisade cartilage myringoplasty, whereas it was achieved in 24 patients (80%) in the temporalis fascia myringoplasty group.Conclusions: The outcomes in our patient series indicate that cartilage myringoplasty achieves good results. Cartilage, a very effective material for the reconstruction of the TM and grafts can provide an excellent anatomical result, perfect stability and good functional outcome.

Environmental contamination by toxic heavy metals is a significant universal problem. The main objective of the study is to use a biodegradable materials like Cyperus pangorei and Chitosan as a composite biosorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) from water. The newly prepared biosorbent is characterized and the capacity of Cr(VI) removal of the biosorbent is carried out systematically by batch mode operations. The adsorption capacity of the biosorbent is examined by changing the parameters like biosorbent dose, varying the initial contact time, varying initial concentration of metal ion and pH of the metal ion solution to know the actual mechanism taking place during the initial sorption process. The experimental data obtained were fitted with the Freundlich, Langmuir and Redlich–Peterson isotherm models and the pseudo first order and the pseudo second order kinetic models. Equilibrium data were fitted very well to the Langmuir Isotherm model and pseudo second order kinetic model. Desorption of the metal ion is also carried out using different concentration of NaOH.

Background: Tumors of the parapharyngeal space (PPS) are rare, accounting for 0.5–1.5% of all head and neck tumors. The anatomy of the PPS is responsible for a wide variety of tumors arising from the PPS. Our series of 10 PPS tumors provides an overview of the clinical course and management of PPS tumors.Methods: This retrospective study included clinical data from patients treated for PPS tumors from 2011 to 2018 at the Stanley medical college hospital, Chennai. Results: After careful analysis of the outcome of the study, we have found out that there was no local recurrence in any patient during the follow-up period. Though few approaches are advised in the literature, In our study transoral approach may be advocated as the first choice for excision of parapharyngeal space tumors, except for malignant tumors and neurogenic tumor. Trans cervical approach is used for malignant and neurogenic tumors, considering its advantages of providing direct access to the neoplasm, adequate control of neurovascular structures from the neck.Conclusions: In our study, middle aged male population was most commonly affected. Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common PPS tumor; prestyloid compartment is mostly affected by these tumors. As per the previous studies, trans cervical approach is first choice for excision of parapharyngeal space tumors. In our study, trans oral approach is also a suitable, safe approach for pre styloid non vascular lesions and trancervical approach can be reserved for postsyloid and malignant lesions.

A new barbiturate has been synthesized from the ethanolic solution of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene, barbituric acid, and triethylamine. The structure of the isolated molecule has been confirmed by ultraviolet (UV)-visible (VIS), infrared (IR), proton magnetic resonance (PMR), 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), correlation spectroscopy (COSY) and mass spectrometry (MS) spectral studies. Elemental analysis and other qualitative tests have also been carried out to elucidate the proposed structure. The anticonvulsant activity of the synthesized molecule was tested by the maximal electro shock method. Albino rats of either sex weighing 150–200 g were used for the study. The drug was given 1h before the induction of maximal electro shock test. The different stages of convulsions such as tonic flexor, tonic extensor, clonus convulsion, stupor, and recovery/death were examined. Reduction in the extensor phase of convulsion was noted for the synthesized barbiturate.

The growing demand for electricity has forced towards the implementation of smart grid where the various participants share and communicate power system data to trade electricity and control electrical power systems. Though service orientation acts as a promising technology to solve integration problems among these domains, data exchange and information interpretation are continuing to be challenges. This paper focuses on the implementation of smart grid from information integration perspective and discusses the various approaches attempted to address the integration problem. The open data model representation proposed in this paper would enable the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based smart grid integration architecture to be more interactive and dynamic to improve power system reliability and reduce per unit cost of electricity.

This paper proposes an idea for selecting cluster heads which are not only stable but also reduces the overhead in maintaining the cluster architecture. Cluster maintenance overheads can be minimized by minimizing the number of generated clusters and the variance of the number of cluster members. The goal is to provide a generic and stable cluster structure for the upper layers. The optimization is done through genetic algorithm.
