Abstract: The decays W --> ev and Z --> e+e- are studied in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. The products of production cross section and branching ratio are measured as sigma(W)e = 682 +/- 12 +/- 40 pb and sigma(Z)e = 65.6 +/- 4.0 +/- 3.8 pb. The results are in good agreement with O (alpha(s)2) calculations of the production cross sections. Many systematic effects cancel in the ratio, R = 10.4 +/- 0.6(0.7) +/- 0.3, which can be used to give an indirect measurement of the total width of the W boson: GAMMA(W) = 2.10 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.09 GeV. The width gives a limit on the top quark mass, m(top) > 53 GeV (95% CL), which is independent of the top decay mode.

Abstract: Results on the cross section for the production of electron pairs in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV are presented. The measured value is sigma = 405 +/- 51 (syst.) +/- 84 (syst.) pb, in the invariant mass interval 10 < m < 70 GeV. The results are compared to recent theoretical calculations which include O(alpha(s)2) QCD contributions. The comparison of these data with those of lower energy experiments show approximate scaling as a function of the variable square-root tau = m/ square-root s.

Abstract: The Swiss ordinance on radioprotection prescribes the periodic verification of the reference dosimeter systems for radiotherapy. The corresponding modalities were elaborated by an interdisciplinary collaboration of representatives of all concerned institutions. The modalities require in particular that the verifications are performed with the radiation qualities used in the hospitals. The verification concept is already realized for high energy photon radiation and for low and medium energy X-rays. The measurement capabilities for the verification with high energy electron beams are in preparation. The tasks to verify the reference dosimeter systems are divided between the Swiss Office of Metrology and Accreditation, METAS, and the Institut Universitaire de Radiophysique Appliquee, IRA. The corresponding metrological infrastructure and measurement capabilities of both institutes are presented. In particular, the traceability of the standards used for the verification to national and international primary standards and thus to the SI system of units is explained. The primary standards established and operated by METAS are briefly described.

Abstract: A measurement of the gluon structure fusion using direct photon events observed with the UA2 detector in p p collisions at √ s =630 GeV is presented. The x -range covered by this analysis is between 0.049 and 0.207 and the Q 2 range is between 280 GeV 2 and 3670 GeV 2 . The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 7.14 pb −1 . The results are found to be in good agreement with the gluon distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering experiments extrapolated to the UA2 Q 2 values.

Abstract: The process pp→evγ+X is studied as √s=630 GeV. The observed signal is used to extract a direct measurement of the parameters κ and λ which define the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the W boson and therefore the WWγ coupling. We find κ=1+2.6−2.2 and λ=0+1.7−1.8 and their 95% confidence limits −3.5

Abstract: A search has been made for scalar leptoquark pair production with the upgraded UA2 detector at the CERN p p Collider at √s = 630 GeV, investigating decays of the leptoquark into a quark and either an electron or an electron neutrino. From an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13 pb−1 a lower limit has been determined for the mass of first generation leptoquarks, yielding 67 GeV (95% CL) for a scalar leptoquark decaying with a 50% branching ratio into a quark and an electron.

From a measurement of the ratio of the production rate of W events with one jet to that with no jets, α s has been extracted to second order in the MS scheme: α s (M 2 w )=0.123±0.0.18( stat .)±0.017 ( syst .) .

Abstract: The ratio of branching fractions of theW decaying to τ ande leptons is measured using $$\bar pp$$ collisions at $$\sqrt s = 630$$ GeV. The ratio of the electroweak charged current couplings to theW is then determined to beg /g =0.997±0.056 (stat.)±0.042 (syst.). The decay modeZ→τ+→τ+ is observed and also found to be consistent withe-τ universality.

Abstract: A study of the two-jet mass spectrum measured with the UA 2 calorimeter has revealed a signal from hadronic decays ofW andZ bosons above a large background. Production and decay properties of the signal have been measured. The combined production cross-section σ·B(W, Z → two jets) is 9.6±2.3 (stat.)±1.1 (syst.) nb, compared with an expectation of 5.8 nb calculated to order αs2. A limit on the production cross-section of additional heavy vector bosons decaying into two jets is given as a function of the boson mass.

Abstract: The UA2 experiment has collected large samples of W and Z events during recent runs at the CERN p p Collider at s = 630 GeV . These samples have been used to perform precise measurements of the masses of the W and Z bosons. After a careful analysis of systematic errors, an improved result is obtained for the mass ratio mwmz. This provides a new value for the weak mixing parameter sin2θw. Furthermore, it can be combined with recent measurements of the Z mass from e+e− colliders to give an absolute measurement of the W mass, leading to the result mw=80.49±0.43 (stat) ± 0.24 (syst) GeV.

Abstract: Results on the production cross sections ofW andZ bosons detected in the UA2 experiment are given based on a large sample ofW→eν andZ→e + e − decays. The measured cross sections are σ = 660±15(stat)±37(syst)pb, σ = 70.4±5.5(stat)±4.0(syst)pb and their ratioR=9.38 −0.72 +0.82 (stat)±0.25(syst). In the framework of the Standard Model, the measured value ofR is used to determine the total width of theW, Γ(W)=2.30±0.19(stat)±0.06(syst) GeV.

Abstract: Sixteen proportional tube chambers with a total number of 144 planes and 9808 wires have been constructed as a tracking and preshower device in the end-cap regions of the UA2 upgraded detector. Chambers with small dead areas were realized by using extruded aluminum profiles. Multiplexing and SMD technology allowed us to make the analog readout electronics very compact and cheap. This paper describes the design and construction of the chambers as well as test beam results and the performance at the CERN p¯p collider.

Abstract: A measurement of the cross-sections for single and double prompt photon production in p p interactions at s = 630 GeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 13.2 pb−1. The results are in good agreement with the predictions of perturbative QCD. The signal from double prompt photon production has a statistical significance of 4.3 standard deviations.

Abstract: The process t-H+b, H+ --> tau+nu, tau+ --> hadrons + nuBar and its charge conjugate are investigated by seeking an excess in number of observed theta's beyond that expected from the standard model under the assumption of e-tau-universality. No such excess is found and new regions of the m(H)-m(t) plane are excluded for B(H+ --> tau(nu) = 0.5 and 1.O. In addition, the ratio of couplings of the tau and eto the W is precisely measured as g-tau(W)/g-e(W) = 1.02 +/- 0.04(stat.) +/- 0.04(syst.).

Abstract: The W and Z bosons masses, m(W) and m(Z), are measured using samples of W --> ev and Z --> e+e- decays observed in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. The ratio is found to be m(W)/m(Z) = 0.8813 +/- 0.0036 +/- 0.0019. This gives a value sin2 theta(w) = 0.2234 +/- 0.0064 +/- 0.0033, and in combination with precise m(Z) measurements from LEP yields m(W) = 80.35 +/- 0.33 +/- 0.17 GeV. This result is in good agreement with other experiments, and with the standard model for a top quark mass lighter than 250 GeV.

19. [Standardization of a reference dosimeter system for radiotherapy in Switzerland]

Abstract: The Swiss ordinance on radioprotection prescribes the periodic verification of the reference dosimeter systems for radiotherapy. The corresponding modalities were elaborated by an interdisciplinary collaboration of representatives of all concerned institutions. The modalities require in particular that the verifications are performed with the radiation qualities used in the hospitals. The verification concept is already realized for high energy photon radiation and for low and medium energy X-rays. The measurement capabilities for the verification with high energy electron beams are in preparation. The tasks to verify the reference dosimeter systems are divided between the Swiss Office of Metrology and Accreditation, METAS, and the Institut Universitaire de Radiophysique Appliquée, IRA. The corresponding metrological infrastructure and measurement capabilities of both institutes are presented. In particular, the traceability of the standards used for the verification to national and international primary standards and thus to the SI system of units is explained. The primary standards established and operated by METAS are briefly described.

The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 7.4 pb -1. The results support predictions from QCD theory.

Abstract: A study of the two-jet mass spectrum measured with the UA 2 calorimeter has revealed a signal from hadronic decays of W and Z bosons above a large background. Production and decay properties of the signal have been measured. The combined production cross-section σ·B(W, Z → two jets) is 9.6±2.3 (stat.)±1.1 (syst.) nb, compared with an expectation of 5.8 nb calculated to order αs2. A limit on the production cross-section of additional heavy vector bosons decaying into two jets is given as a function of the boson mass. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: The large sample of W→ev events collected by the UA2 experiment at the CERN pp̄ collider between 1988 and 1990 has been used to determine the strong coupling constant α s. From a measurement of the ratio of the production rate of W events with one jet to that with no jets, α s has been extracted to second order in the MS scheme: α s (M W 2) = 0.123 ± 0.0.18 (stat.) ± 0.017 (syst.).

Abstract: The ratio of branching fractions of the W decaying to τ and e leptons is measured using {Mathematical expression} collisions at {Mathematical expression} GeV. The ratio of the electroweak charged current couplings to the W is then determined to be g τ W/g e W=0.997±0.0 56 (stat.)±0.042 (syst.). The decay mode Z→τ +→τ + is observed and also found to be consistent with e-τ universality. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: A search for supersymmetric decays of the Z boson into a pair of scalar electrons or winos (partners of the electron and W boson) has been made with the upgraded UA2 experiment at the CERN p p collider at s = 630 GeV . The analysis of the sample of electron pairs, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.4 pb −1 , shows no evidence for such exotic decays. The 90% confidence level lower mass limits obtained exclude selectron masses up to e40 GeV/ c 2 in the case of a light photino, and wino masses up to 45 GeV/ c 2 in the case of a light scalar neutrino.

Abstract: A search has been made with the upgraded UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider at s =630 GeV for multi-jet events with large transverse momentum imbalance in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.4 pb−1. Under the assumption that the photino is the lightest stable supersymmetric (SUSY) particle, the data have been used to deduce lower limits in a minimal SUSY model for the squark ( m q ) and the gluino ( m g ) masses. The 90% CL bounds are m g > 74 GeV independent of m g , m g > 79 GeV independent of m g , and and m> 106 GeV for m q =m q =m .

Abstract: The transverse momentum distributions of W and Z bosons produced in {Mathematical expression} collisions at {Mathematical expression} are examined. Comparisons are made with QCD predictions, and good agreement is found. The fraction of W bosons produced with pT>25 GeV is found to be 3.8±0.6(stat)-1.3+0.9(syst)%. © 1990 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: The upgraded UA 2 detector has collected data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 7.5 pb−1 from$\bar pp$ collisions at a centre of mass energy of 630 GeV during 1988 and 1989. A search has been performed for the production and decay of the top quark (t) or a member of a hypothetical fourth family (b′). No evidence has been found for such processes. Using the expected rates for production and decay branching ratios from the Standard Model, this implies that the top quark mass is greater than 69(71) GeV/c2, and that theb′ mass is greater than 54(57) GeV/c2, at 95(90)% confidence.

Abstract: The two-jet invariant mass spectrum as measured in the UA2 experiment is used to search for additional heavy vector bosons decaying to two-jets. The mass of an additional W boson that couples to fermions with a V + A form is constrained to be greater than 261 GeV to the 90% confidence level. A limit on the production cross section of additional W and Z bosons is given as a function of the boson mass. A limit on the production of excited quarks is also given as a function of the excited quark mass.

Abstract: A heuristic model is used to describe data collected by the UA2 experiment at √ s = 630 GeV . Distributions of the energy sharing between the leading clusters and the rest of the event are examined. The main features of these distributions can be described by a two-component model with soft, collective interactions dominating at low transverse energy and hard, constituent interactions dominating at high transverse energy. This model provides a simple picture of the emergence of two-jet dominance at SPS p p Collider energies.

Abstract: The production of very large transverse momentum ( p T ) hadron jets has been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider for s =630 GeV . The inclusive jet production cross sections exhibit a p T -dependent increase with respect to the s =546 GeV data from previous Collider runs. This increase can be described both by QCD calculations and by approximate x T =2 p T /√ s scaling. No significant deviation of the data from QCD predictions is observed at very large p T , placing a lower limit on the characteristic scale Λ c of a hypothetical superstrong contact interaction responsible for the binding of preons in the quark ( Λ c >370 GeV at 95% CL).

Abstract: The UA2 experiment, running at the CERN SPS$\bar pp$ Collider, has performed a study of events containing three hard jets in the final state. The angular distributions of the three jets show evidence for gluon bremsstrahlung, in good agreement with a QCD model to leading order in the strong coupling constant αs. The yield of three-jet events relative to that of two-jet events provides a measure of the strong coupling constant: ;3K3/K2=0.23±0.01±0.04, whereK2 andK3 represent the contributions arising from higher order corrections in α3 to the two- and three-jet exclusive cross-sections. A detailed discussion of the systematic and theoretical uncertainties is given.

Abstract: The invariant mass distribution of jet pairs observed in the UA2 central calorimeter is examined in the search for an excess of events in the region of the W ± and Z bosons, which would reveal their decays into quark-antiquark pairs. We give a detailed account of the methods of analysis used to optimize the mass resolution achieving ≅±10%. A structure is observed at the level of ≅ 3 standard deviations in the mass region of W ± and Z with shape and position consistent with expectation from their qqdecays. It contains 632 ± 190 events, 1.4 standard deviations above the standard model prediction of 340 ± 80 events.

Abstract: Bismuth germanate (BGO) calorimeter arrays, consisting of up to 12 elements of 30 × 30 × 200 mm 3 have been tested at the CERN PS with pions and electrons of up to 10 GeV/ c momentum, and at SIN with pions, electrons and protons up to 450 MeV/ c . Both photomultiplier (PM) and photodiode (PD) readouts were used. Accurate calibration in the 100 MeV energy range was achieved with stopping protons, stopping pions and minimum ionizing pions. With 212 MeV electrons and PM readout, a time resolution of the BGO signal of 640 ps fwhm has been measured. The energy resolution for electrons above 1 GeV (PD readout) was found to be roughly constant at σ / E ∼ 1%. This is consistent with a negligible intrinsic resolution for BGO at these energies, after taking into account shower leakage and PD noise. For electrons of 92 and 200 MeV, we obtained (PM readout) energy resolutions close to the theoretical limit given by photon statistics and shower leakage. The electron/hadron separation was better than 1:500 over the energy range of 0.5 to 10 GeV, and improved to better than 1:1000 after a simple pattern cut. The energy deposition of the e.m. showers, both laterally and longitudinally (rear leakage), was found to be in agreement at the 0.1% level with Monte Carlo calculations using the SLAC-EGS program.

Abstract: A study has been made of the decays W → ev and Z → e + e − , using the UA2 detector at the CERN pp Collider. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 142 nb −1 at a centre-of-mass collision energy √ s =546 GeV, and 768 nb −1 at √ s =630 GeV. Measurements of the standard model parameters from samples of 251 W decay and 39 Z decay candidates are compared with expectations of the standard electroweak model.

Abstract: A study has been made of the production characteristics of W and Z bosons produced at the CERN p p Collider. The event sample consists of 251 W→ev decays, and 39 Z→e + e − decays, identified by the UA2 detector, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 142 nb −1 at √ s = 546 GeV, and 768 nb −1 at √ s = 630 GeV. Measurements of W and Z production cross sections, of longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions, and of associated jet production, are presented. These measurements are compared with theoretical expectations, which include higher order QCD effects.

Abstract: We analyze the energy density distribution in harronic final states as a function of their total transverse energy measured in the segmented central calorimeter of the UA2 detector. The energy dependence of collective shape variables is investigated. The data, collected at the CERN $$\bar p$$ p Collider at $$\sqrt s = 630$$ GeV, exhibit strong variations in all these variables over the transverse energy range between 15 and 210 GeV, corresponding to substantial modifications in the structure of multihadronic final states. The evolution of the energy density distribution and of the collective shape variables shows a clear transition between two extreme dynamical regimes, respectively dominated byp T -limited phase space and by collimated two-jet configurations. A study of the relative populations of two-and three-jet systems reveals two different sources of configurations having three distinct lobes in the pattern of the energy-flow. A first component, steeply falling with energy, receives substantial contributions from soft parton collisions at lower transverse energies. Above 60 GeV a new hard component emerges, characterized by an approximately constant rate with respect to the dominant two-jet structures.

Abstract: The UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider has identified a total sample of 251 W→eν events. Among this sample 221 events are found without jets and 29 with one jet. The yield of one-jet events relative to that of zero-jet events provides a measurement of the strong coupling constant: αs(Mw2)=0.13±0.03(stat)±0.03±(syst1)±0.02(syst2), where syst1 represents the experimental systematic error and syst2 is an estimate of the theoretical uncertainty.

Abstract: The two-jet invariant mass spectrum as measured in the UA2 experiment is used to search for additional heavy vector bosons decaying to two-jets. The mass of an additional W boson that couples to fermions with a V + A form is constrained to be greater than 261 GeV to the 90% confidence level. A limit on the production cross section of additional W and Z bosons is given as a function of the boson mass. A limit on the production of excited quarks is also given as a function of the excited quark mass.

Abstract: A measurement of the gluon structure fusion using direct photon events observed with the UA2 detector in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV is presented. The x-range covered by this analysis is between 0.049 and 0.207 and the Q2 range is between 280 GeV2 and 3670 GeV2. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 7.14 pb-1. The results are found to be in good agreement with the gluon distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering experiments extrapolated to the UA2 Q2 values.

Abstract: The process ppBAR --> e-nu-gamma + X is studied as square-root s = 630 GeV. The observed signal is used to extract a direct measurement of the parameters-kappa and lambda which define the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the W boson and therefore the WW-gamma coupling. We find kappa = 1(-2.2)+2.6 and lambda = 0(-1.8)+1.7 and their 95% confidence limits -3.5 < kappa < 5.9 and -3.6 < lambda < 3.5. The results are model independent and in good agreement with the standard model values, kappa = 1 and lambda = 0.

Abstract: A search has been made for scalar leptoquark pair production with the upgraded UA2 detector at the CERN ppBAR Coolider at square-root s = 630 GeV, investigating decays of the leptoquark into a quark and either an electron or an electron neutrino. From an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13 pb-1 a lower limit has been determined for the mass of first generation leptoquarks, yielding 67 GeV (95% CL) for a scalar leptoquark decaying with a 50% branching ratio into a quark and an electron.

Abstract: Results are given on a search for the decay W+/- --> pi+/--gamma with the UA2 detector in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. No signal for such a process is observed and upper limits on the ratio R = GAMMA(W+/- --> pi+/--gamma)/GAMMA(W+/- --> e+/--nu) < 4.9 x 10(-3) and on the branching ratio BR(W+/- --> pi+/--gamma) < 5.4 x 10(-4) are derived at 95% confidence level.
