Masses of 238U projectile fragments have been measured with time-resolved Schottky Mass Spectrometry (SMS) at the FRS-ESR facility at GSI. The exotic nuclei were created in the production target at the entrance of the fragment separator FRS, spatially separated in flight and injected into the storage-cooler ring ESR at about 70% light velocity. This means the ions were mainly bare or carried only a few electrons, e.g., the population of Li-like ions was below 1% for Pt fragments. Accurate newmass values of 33 neutron-rich, stored exotic nuclei in the element range from platinum to uranium have been obtained for the first time. In total more than 150 nuclides including references with well-known masses have been covered in this large-area SMS measurement. A novel data analysis has been applied which reduces the systematic errors by taking into account the velocity profile of the cooler electrons and the residual ion-optical dispersion in this part of the storage ring. The experiment, the data analysis, and the mass values are presented. The experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions demonstrating systematic deviations of up to 1500 keV from modern mass models.

238U projectile fragments have been created at the entrance of the fragment separator FRS, spatially separated in flight within 0.45 μs and injected into the storage-cooler ring ESR at 7.9 Tm corresponding to about 70% light velocity. Accurate new mass values and lifetime information of the stored exotic nuclei in the element range from platinum to uranium have been obtained with single-particle Schottky spectrometry. In this experiment the new isotopes of 236Ac, 224At, 221Po, 222Po, and 213Tl were discovered. The isotopes were unambiguously identified and their masses measured. In addition, the time-correlated data have provided information on the lifetime of the new nuclides. The discovery of isotopes along with accurate mass measurement has been achieved for the first time at the FRS-ESR facility. The results will contribute to the knowledge of the decay products from the r-process nuclei and enable a crucial test of the predictive power of modern nuclear mass and half-life models.

Electromagnetic transitions within nuclei reflect specific aspects of nuclear structure. This is particularly true for metastable excited states, or isomers, like 178 Hf m 2 ( T 1 / 2 = 31 years, excitation energy 2446 keV). The interaction of external radiation with isomers can be used to study atomic and nuclear properties and, perhaps, to induce a release of the stored energy. Some experiments indicated that low-energy photons near the L 3 edge (9.561 keV) of hafnium could cause this to occur for 178 Hf m 2 , but the lack of a viable physical model and null experiments by other groups have left these claims in doubt. The present work describes a new experiment to examine this process by closely duplicating the irradiation conditions in positive studies, but using a more advanced multi-detector γ array. No support for an induced depletion of 178 Hf m 2 by low-energy photons was obtained, with an upper limit for the integral cross section that is eight orders-of-magnitude below the reported value.

The 242m Am isomer, a well-known candidate for photodepopulation research, has been studied in this first ever Coulomb excitation of a nearly pure (≈98%) isomer target. Thirty new states, including a new rotational band built on a K π = 6− state, have been identified. Strong K-mixing results in nearly equal populations of the K π=5− and 6− states. Newly identified states have been assigned to the K π=3− rotational band, the lowest states of which are known to decay into the ground-state band. Implications regarding K-mixing and Coulomb excitation paths to the ground state are discussed.

Reports that incident photons near 10 keV can induce the emission of gamma rays with concomitant energy release from the 31-year isomer of 178 Hf challenge established models of nuclear and atomic physics. In order to provide a direct and independent assessment of these claims, a multi-detector system was designed as a specialized research tool. The YSU miniball is unique in its combination of performance characteristics, compact size and portability, enabling it to be easily transported to and placed within the confines of beamline hutches at synchrotron radiation sources. Monochromatic synchrotron radiation was used in the most recent studies from which evidence of prompt triggering was claimed, suggesting similar sites for independent tests of these results. The miniball array consists of six high-efficiency BGO scintillators coupled with a single 65% Ge detector and provides time-resolved gamma-ray calorimetry rather than purely spectroscopic data. The need to record high detected folds from the array (up to seven-fold gamma coincidences) makes this system different in practice from standard spectroscopic arrays for which data is typically restricted to triples or lower folds. Here the system requirements and design are discussed, as well as system performance as characterized using the well-known natural decay cascades of 178m2 Hf. This serves as the foundation for subsequent high-sensitivity searches for low-energy triggering of gamma emission from this isomer.

The properties of high-K isomers have been investigated by measuring γ rays from a source of the 31-year 178Hfm2 isomer and from the decay of implanted 178,179Lu beams. Low-intensity transitions have been identified in the decay of 178Hfm2, demonstrating a consistent extension of K-hindrance systematics to higher multipolarities, and elucidating the spin-dependence of the mixing between the two Kπ = 8- bands. A search is underway for new isomers in 178,179Lu and the preliminary results of the analysis are reported. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Preliminary survey experiments have been performed to examine the triggering of gamma emission from the 31-year Hf-178m2 isomer using intense monochromatic synchrotron radiation from the X15A beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Initial studies were performed to probe incident photon energies over the L 1, L 2, and L 3 X-ray edges of Hf and the 12–13 keV range. Resonances larger than the experimental minimum detectable level of 10−25 cm2 keV were not observed.

Experiments with the long-lived, high-K isomer 178Hfm2 have been recognized as intriguing tests of multi-quasiparticle state structures and their interactions with external radiation. A triggered release of the energy stored by this isomer, 2.5 MeV per nucleus or 1.2 GJ/gram, in the form of a gamma-ray burst might prove valuable for numerous applications. The observation of “accelerated” decay of 178Hfm2 during irradiation by 90-keV bremsstrahlung has already been reported, but with poor statistical accuracy due to the experimental approach. That approach employed single Ge detectors to seek increases in the areas of peaks at energies corresponding to transitions in the spontaneous decay of the isomer. The need for better quality data to confirm those results has motivated the development of improved detection concepts. One such concept was utilized here to perform an initial search for low-energy (

A 98% pure Am-242m ( K = 5(-), t(1/2) = 141 years) isomeric target was Coulomb excited with a 170.5-MeV Ar-40 beam. The selectivity of Coulomb excitation, coupled with the sensitivity of Gammasphere plus CHICO, was sufficient to identify 46 new states up to spin 18h in at least four rotational bands; 11 of these new states lie in the isomer band, 13 in a previously unknown yrast K-pi = 6(-) rotational band, and 13 in a band tentatively identified as the predicted yrast K-pi = 5(+) band. The rotational bands based on the K-pi = 5- isomer and the 6(-) bandhead were populated by Coulomb excitation with unexpectedly equal cross sections. The gamma-ray yields are reproduced by Coulomb excitation calculations using a two-particle plus rotor model (PRM), implying nearly complete Delta K = 1 mixing of the two almost-degenerate rotational bands, but recovering the Alaga rule for the unperturbed states. The degeneracy of the 5(-) and 6(-) bands allows for precise determination of the mixing interaction strength V, which approaches the strong-mixing limit; this agrees with the 50% attenuation of the Coriolis matrix element assumed in the model calculations. The fractional admixture of the I-K(pi) = 6(6)(-) state in the nominal 6(5)(-) isomer band state is measured within the PRM as 45.6(-1.1)(+0.3)%. The E2 and M1 strengths coupling the 5(-) and 6(-) bands are enhanced significantly by the mixing, while E1 and E2 couplings to other low-K bands are not measurably enhanced. The yields of the 5(+) band are reproduced by an E3 strength of approximate to 15 W.u., competitive with the interband E2 strength. Alignments of the identified two-particle Nilsson states in Am-242 are compared with the single-particle alignments in Am-241. (Less)

The mass excess value of ME=-13 265(31) keV has been obtained, which has been used to determine the proton-neutron interaction strength in Pb-210, as a double difference of atomic masses. The results show a dramatic variation of the strength for lead isotopes when crossing the N=126 neutron shell closure, thus confirming the empirical predictions that this interaction strength is sensitive to the overlap of the wave functions of the last valence neutrons and protons.

Gamma-ray and conversion-electron spectroscopy have established the existence of a 2.29(1) s, K{sup {pi}}=0{sup +}, isomeric state in neutron-rich {sup 174}Tm. The isomer deexcites via 100- and 152-keV electromagnetic transitions. First results from a newly commissioned Si(Li) detector array have established their M1 and E3 multipolarities, respectively. The single-particle configurations of the excited states suggest that the E3 transition originates from a {pi}h{sub 11/2}{sup -1}{yields}{pi}d{sub 3/2} configuration change, whereas the M1 transition occurs between members of a Gallaghar-Moszkowski doublet. From the measured half-life, the deduced B(E3) value of 0.024(2) W.u. is highly hindered. The reported measurements resolve ambiguities in the previously proposed {beta} decay scheme of {sup 174}Er to {sup 174}Tm.
