This paper brings together for the first time the writings of four Little Gidding authors of the early seventeenth century. What they then saw as a merely auxiliary effort became in the nineteenth century a matter of international bibliographical concern. The three siblings, John and Nicholas Ferrar and their older sister Susanna, and John’s son Nicholas, created at least thirty-eight works, not all now extant. They included a commonplace book, translations, promotional works, memoranda of instruction, and—most famously—biblical concordances. Thirty years of study has extended, though not completed, their provenance.

We report the first measurement of the (e,e^{'}p) three-body breakup reaction cross sections in helium-3 (^{3}He) and tritium (^{3}H) at large momentum transfer [⟨Q^{2}⟩≈1.9 (GeV/c)^{2}] and x_{B}1 kinematics, where the cross section should be sensitive to quasielastic (QE) scattering from single nucleons. The data cover missing momenta 40≤p_{miss}≤500 MeV/c that, in the QE limit with no rescattering, equals the initial momentum of the probed nucleon. The measured cross sections are compared with state-of-the-art ab initio calculations. Overall good agreement, within ±20%, is observed between data and calculations for the full p_{miss} range for ^{3}H and for 100≤p_{miss}≤350 MeV/c for ^{3}He. Including the effects of rescattering of the outgoing nucleon improves agreement with the data at p_{miss}250 MeV/c and suggests contributions from charge-exchange (SCX) rescattering. The isoscalar sum of ^{3}He plus ^{3}H, which is largely insensitive to SCX, is described by calculations to within the accuracy of the data over the entire p_{miss} range. This validates current models of the ground state of the three-nucleon system up to very high initial nucleon momenta of 500 MeV/c.

We have measured the polarization of Λ\LambdaΛ hyperons produced inclusively by a Σ−\Sigma^-Σ− beam of 340 GeV/c momentum in nuclear targets. From a sample of 9.5 millions of identified Λ\LambdaΛ decays, polarizations were determined in the range xF>0.1x_F \gt 0.1xF​>0.1 and pt≤1.6p_t\leq 1.6pt​≤1.6 GeV/c . The polarization w.r.t. the production normal is mainly positive for xF≥0.3x_F \geq 0.3xF​≥0.3. At fixed values of xFx_FxF​, it increases with ptp_tpt​ to a maximum between pt=0.5p_t = 0.5pt​=0.5 and pt=1p_t = 1pt​=1 GeV/c , and then decreases to zero or even negative values, in sharp contrast to the plateau above pt=1p_t = 1pt​=1 GeV/c observed in inclusive Λ\LambdaΛ production by protons.

We report on a measurement of the inclusive cross sections of $\Lambda$ , $\overline\Lambda$ , K 0 S , $\overline{\Xi}^{+}$ $\Omega^{-}$ production by $\Sigma^-$ and $\pi^-$ of 345 GeV/c momentum and by neutrons of 260 GeV/c mean momentum in copper and carbon. The differential cross sections as function of p 2 t show a distinct non-gaussian behavior above 1.2 (GeV/c)2. A comparison of the xF-dependence of $\Lambda$ , $\overline\Lambda$ and K0 production with calculations using PYTHIA and the QGSM model is discussed.

We report on a measurement of the inclusive production cross sections for \(\Sigma^{\pm}\), \(\Sigma^{\pm}_{1385}\), \(\Sigma^{\pm}_{1660}\) and \(\overline{\Sigma}^-_{1385}\) in the CERN hyperon beam experiment WA89, using a \(\Sigma^- / \pi^-\) beam of 345 GeV/c momentum and neutrons of 260 GeV/c mean momentum. A strong leading particle effect was observed for all negative \(\Sigma\) and \(\Sigma^*\). The results are compared with predictions from phenomenological models.

The conventional picture of early Virginia suggests an almost exclusively male population, intent on personal profit, ruthlessly ignoring social considerations, lacking stability. This article argues that such a picture is an exaggeration, and draws attention to three communities, the inhabitants of which more closely resembled the rural English societies from which they had come. Particular attention is paid to the Neck of Land in Charles City, upriver from Jamestown close to the falls. The survival of administrative records makes possible an account of this small community between 1613 and 1629, revealing a hamlet of healthy married families whose concerns were sex, land, and status, rather than death and disease or the neighbouring Indian menace; and where stability in the 1620s did not, however, mean the absence of social tensions. Thus the Neck of Land, taken together with the communities at Point Comfort and on the Eastern Shore, demonstrates the inadequacy of current perceptions of early Virginian society.

Nicholas Ferrar's fame in the twentieth century rests largely upon religious foundations – as a saint of the Church of England and as one of the moving spirits at Little Gidding – but in fact his historical importance is more than merely religious, and indeed religion did not dominate his life before 1625. Born in London in February 1593, the youngest but one of a family of six, Nicholas was named for his father, a highly successful Merchant Adventurer who was also a Master of the Skinners Company. Small, fair-haired, precocious and frail, Nicholas was always his mother's favourite, and it was she who largely influenced his development. At the age of seventeen he was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, but soon after his twentieth birthday he left Cambridge for the sake of his health, spending the years 1613–17 on the continent, chiefly at Padua, where he studied medicine. On his return to England he did not resume his fellowship at Clare, but remained in London with his parents, attending to his now elderly father's business affairs which included membership of the East India and Virginia Companies – and acting as his executor upon his death in 1620.

High-precision measurements of the proton elastic form-factor ratio, {mu}{sub p}G{sub E}{sup p}/G{sub M}{sup p}, have been made at four-momentum transfer, Q{sup 2}, values between 0.2 and 0.5 GeV{sup 2}. The new data, while consistent with previous results, clearly show a ratio less than unity and significant differences from the central values of several recent phenomenological fits. By combining the new form-factor ratio data with an existing cross-section measurement, one finds that in this Q{sup 2} range the deviation from unity is primarily due to G{sub E}{sup p} being smaller than expected.

We report on a high-statistics search for the {theta}(1540){sup +} resonance in {sigma}{sup -}-nucleus collisions at 340 GeV/c. No evidence for this resonance was found in our data sample which contains 13 million K{sub s}{sup 0}{yields}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} decays above background. For the decay channel {theta}{sup +}{yields}K{sub s}{sup 0}p and the kinematic range x{sub F}> 0.05, we find the production cross section to be BR({theta}{sup +}{yields}K{sub s}{sup 0}p){sigma}{sub 0}

We report on a measurement of the differential cross sections of inclusive $K^{\pm}_{890}$ production in $\sigma^-, pi^-$ and neutron beams. A strong leading particle effect was observed for $K^-_{890}$ production by $\sigma^-$ . The measured $x_F$ –distributions are compared with calculations based on the Lund model (PYTHIA) and the quark-gluon string model.

The triazines are a group of chemically similar herbicides including atrazine, cyanazine, and propazine, primarily used to control broadleaf weeds. About 64 to 80 million lbs of atrazine alone are used each year in the United States, making it one of the two most widely used pesticides in the country. All triazines are somewhat persistent in water and mobile in soil. They are among the most frequently detected pesticides in groundwater. They are considered as possible human carcinogens (Group C) based on an increase in mammary gland tumors in female laboratory animals. In this research, we performed the Microtox Assay to investigate the acute toxicity of a significant number of triazines including atrazine, atraton, ametryne, bladex, prometryne, and propazine, and some of their degradation products including atrazine desethyl, atrazine deisopropyl, and didealkyled triazine. Tests were carried out as described by Azur Environmental [1]. The procedure measured the relative acute toxicity of triazines, producing data for the calculation of triazine concentrations effecting 50% reduction in bioluminescence (EC50s). Quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) were examined based on the molecular properties obtained from quantum mechanical predictions performed for each compound. Toxicity tests yielded EC50 values of 39.87, 273.20, 226.80, 36.96, 81.86, 82.68, 12.74, 11.80, and 78.50 mg/L for atrazine, propazine, prometryne, atraton, atrazine desethyl, atrazine deisopropyl, didealkylated triazine, ametryne, and bladex, respectively; indicating that ametryne was the most toxic chemical while propazine was the least toxic. QSAR evaluation resulted in a coefficient of determination (r2) of 0.86, indicating a good value of toxicity prediction based on the chemical structures/properties of tested triazines.

The focal plane polarimeter (FPP) for Hall A at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF) is ready for experiments. The ability to calibrate the FPP on-site using elastic scattering of polarized electrons from an unpolarized hydrogen target is demonstrated. The ratio of the proton electric form factor to its magnetic form factor has been measured at Q2=0.810(GeV/c)2.

The etiology, diagnosis, and management of carpal tunnel syndrome remains controversial despite nearly 50 years of surgical treatment. The increasing incidence of the entity in clerical workers and in laborers has fueled the controversy as to whether this is a work-related condition. This article reports a case of carpal tunnel syndrome with a hitherto undescribed etiology.

Light and ultrastructuralfindings in a mixed mesodermal tumor of the urinary bladder are reported. The mesenchymal component of the tumor contained undifferentiated mesenchymal cells and cells with chondroblastic differentiation. The neoplastic chondrocytes displayed an abundance of cytoplasmic microfilaments and had a scalloped cell surface.
