The temperament of animals can vary among individuals and among populations, but it is often unclear whether spatial variation in temperament is the result of acclimation to local environmental conditions or genetic adaptation to spatial differences in natural selection. This study tested whether populations of a marine fish that experience different levels of mortality and fishing exhibited local adaptation in behaviors related to predator avoidance and evasion. First, we measured variation in reactivity to perceived risk in wild populations of black surfperch (Embiotoca jacksoni). We compared flight initiation distances (FID) between populations with significantly different mortality rates. After finding that FID values were substantially lower in the low-risk locations, we tested for local adaptation by rearing lab-born offspring from both high- and low-risk populations in a common environment before measuring their behavior. Lab-reared offspring from high- and low-risk populations exhibited significant differences in several behaviors related to reactivity. Between 23 and 43% of the total variation in behaviors we measured could be attributed to source population. These results thus suggest that a substantial amount of spatial variation in behaviors related to predator evasion may represent local adaptation. In addition, behaviors we measured had an average, broad-sense heritability of 0.24, suggesting that the behavioral tendencies of these populations have some capacity to evolve further in response to any changes in selection.

Infantile hemangiomas, otherwise known as infantile capillary hemangiomas, strawberry hemangiomas, or strawberry nevi, are nonmalignant vascular tumors that commonly affect children. The natural disease course typically involves growth for up to a year, followed by regression without treatment over a period of years with no cosmetic or functional sequelae. Less commonly, however, infantile hemangiomas can become a threat to vision or even life depending on location and size of the lesion. In addition, infantile hemangiomas, particularly those involving the face, may be disfiguring and result in lifelong sequelae. β-blockers have become a mainstay of therapy given their relatively low-risk profile and efficacy. Other treatment modalities previously described in the literature include corticosteroids (both intralesional and systemic), imiquimod, vincristine, bleomycin A5, and interferon α. More recently, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors such as captopril have been used. Laser therapy and, less commonly, surgical excision are also available treatment options. We review current recommended management and treatment of capillary hemangiomas and discuss the benefits and risks of all previously reported treatment modalities.

It is well known that demographic rates such as growth and mortality may vary among populations, but the degree of variation in demography is often unknown, especially when considering multiple populations at large spatial scales (e.g., across hundreds of kilometers). Likewise, of the many factors that may affect demography, it is often unknown which are the major factors responsible for spatial variation in demographic rates. In this study, we estimated rates of growth and examined age distributions within nine populations of black perch (Embiotoca jacksoni) distributed across ~350 km of coastline. We tested whether spatial variation in demography was associated with several explanatory variables including population density, predator density, food availability, and fishing activity. Our study revealed a substantial amount of spatial variation in demographic rates. Among-population variation in growth accounted for 55% of the total variation, and the coefficient of variation for mean age within a population was 27%, suggesting substantial variation in mortality. Spatial variation in growth was most sensitive to variation in food availability and mean age was lowest at locations with high levels of spearfishing activity. Although the fishery for black perch is not a major one, fishing mortality rates may be very high in some areas. Overall, our results shed light on the ecological forces that shape demographic variation of this species, and suggest that fishing mortality may have a major influence on the dynamics of perch populations.

To test life-history theory that body size and sex should influence how animals allocate time to foraging versus reproductive activities, we measured the effects of size and sex on courting success and foraging behaviour of black surfperch Embiotoca jacksoni off Santa Catalina Island, southern California. Observations of focal fish were made while snorkelling, during which the length of each fish (estimated to the nearest cm), total duration of courting encounters and foraging rates were recorded. We made observations during and outside the mating season. Courtship occurred only between pairs and its duration increased with the size of both the male and female. Although males would court females that were smaller or larger than themselves, pairs that were closely matched in size had long courting sessions, whereas those that differed considerably in size courted only briefly. Small fish foraged more than larger fish, both during and outside the mating season. Males and females foraged at similar rates outside of the mating season, but during the mating season males reduced their foraging rates to less than half that seen outside of the mating season, whereas females continued to forage at the same rate. This decrease in foraging rate of males during the mating season was seen in all sizes of males but was proportionally greatest in the largest males. These observations indicate that males trade off time spent on foraging for time spent courting during the mating season, whereas females do not.

PURPOSE To report initial results using a native 240 frames per second smartphone camera for 2-dimensional videographic analysis of eyelid dynamics during spontaneous blinking. METHODS Spontaneous blinking was prospectively recorded in volunteers using a smartphone camera recording at 240 frames per second in 720p. A standardized recording setup was used in which the smartphone was mounted on a tripod stand at 0.5 m in the Frankfort horizontal plane. Subjects viewed a nature documentary video in primary gaze while their spontaneous blinking was recorded for 3 minutes. Exclusion criteria included known eyelid malposition or ocular surface pathology, including dry eye syndrome, contact lens use, prior eyelid or intraocular surgery, prior periocular trauma, or craniofacial abnormality. Primary outcome measures were spontaneous interblink interval, blink rate in blinks per minute, percentage of incomplete blinks, and blink velocity. RESULTS The authors studied 10 subjects, 5 men and 5 women. Average age was 34 (range 19-58). Mean interblink interval was found to be 7.4 seconds (SD: 5.2, range: 1.9-17.6), corresponding to a mean blink rate of 13 blinks per minute (SD: 7.8, range: 3.4-32.0). Mean percentage of incomplete blinks was 49.8% (SD: 33.3, range: 0-100). Mean blink closure velocity was 93 mm/seconds (SD: 31, range: 40-160). These numbers are consistent with previously published results of spontaneous eyelid blink parameters. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that 240 frames per second videography native to modern smartphone cameras captures anatomic detail and blink dynamics with sufficient resolution and clarity to provide objective clinical information about spontaneous eyelid blink rate, dynamics, and function.

Facial trauma often involves injuries to the eyelid and periorbital region. Management of these injuries can be challenging due to the involvement of multiple complex anatomic structures that are in close proximity. Restoration of normal anatomic relationships of the eyelids and periocular structures is essential for optimum functional and aesthetic outcome after trauma. This review provides an overview of the current literature involving soft tissue trauma of the eyelid and periorbital tissue, and highlights key steps in patient evaluation and management with various types of injuries.

Advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma may present to oculoplastic surgeons and ophthalmologists as epiphora or medial canthus swelling. In contrast, the authors describe an uncommon initial presentation of alacrima in a 30-year-old female with nasopharyngeal carcinoma without invasion of the nasolacrimal sac, duct, or lacrimal gland. The diagnosis was delayed due an initial misdiagnosis of dry eye. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma should be included in the differential for diminished tear production, especially if it presents asymmetrically.

Food web interactions and the response of Pacific salmon to physical processes in the North Pacific Ocean over interannual and interdecadal timescales are explored using naturally occurring stable isotope ratios of carbon (13C/12C) and nitrogen (15N/14N). Stable isotope analyses of five species of sexually mature North Pacific salmon from Alaska (Oncorhynchus spp.) cluster into three groups: chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) have the highest values, followed by coho (O. kisutch), with chum (O. keta), sockeye (O. nerka), and pink (O. gorbuscha) together having the lowest values. Although detailed isotopic data on salmon prey are lacking, there are limited data on relevant prey items from areas in which they are found in high abundance. These data suggest that the characteristics of the sockeye, pink and chum we have analyzed are compatible with their diets including open ocean squid and zooplankton, which are in general agreement with stomach content analyses. Isotope relationships between muscle and scale show consistent relationships for both δ13C (R2=0.98) and δ15N (R2=0.90). Thus, scales, which have been routinely archived for many systems, can be used for retrospective analyses. Archived sockeye salmon scales spanning 1966–1999 from Red Lake, Kodiak Island, Alaska were analyzed for their stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen. The δ15N record displays a decreasing trend of ~3‰ from 1969–1982 and an increasing trend of ~3‰ from 1982–1992, while the variations in δ13C are relatively minor. These trends may result from factors such as shifts in trophic level of feeding and/or feeding location, or may originate at the base of the food web via changes in processes such as nutrient cycling or primary productivity. Detailed studies on prey isotopic variability and its controls are needed to distinguish between these factors, and thus to improve the use of stable isotope analysis as a tool to learn more about present and past ecosystem change in the North Pacific and its relation to climatic change.

Spawn-taking efforts for walleyes Stizostedion vitreum in Colorado were used to evaluate gear selectivity in terms of catch per unit effort (CPUE) and sex ratio. Seasonal electrofishing CPUE ranged from 28 to 197 walleyes/h, whereas gillnetting CPUE ranged between 0.5 and 3.0 walleyes/net-night. Corresponding sex ratios (male: female) for these gears ranged between 9.5 and 48.3 for electrofishing and 0.3 and 0.5 for gillnetting. Weighted percent hatching success was also determined for eggs fertilized with milt from electrofished males versus gillnetted males to determine if electrofishing harmed male gametes. The weighted percent hatch for electrofishing was 69.1%, compared with 76.9% for gillnetting (P = 0.357). These results suggest that electrofishing may be used to enhance numbers of male broodstock during spawn-taking operations. The goal of this research project was to develop approaches and methods for large-scale field collection and short-term storage of semen obtained from walleyes (Stizostedion vitreum). Male walleyes were most effectively collected by trap-netting in shallow water (1–2 m deep). Most fish (78%n) were collected at water temperatures higher than 6°C. The ratio of males to females in the catch was inversely related to water temperature. An efficient concentration of tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) for anesthesia prior to stripping was established at 99 mg!L; time to immobilization averaged 211 s. Average amounts of semen produced per fish from first, second, and third daily strippings were 3.1, 1.3, and 0.5 mL, respectively. Semen was preserved in extender (1 part fresh semen : 2 parts extender) and stored in plastic sandwich containers (11.4 × 10.8 cm). Each container held 24 mL of preserved semen. During spawning operations for walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) in 1993 and 1994 three dilutions of extended semen were used and hatching success was compared with that obtained from fresh semen. Semen : extender ratios of 1:2, 1:4, and 1:6 were found to compare favorably with fresh semen. In 1993, fresh semen produced the highest hatching percentage (67.5%), followed by extender ratios of 1:4 (64.0%), 1:2 (57.5%), and 1:6 (55.4%). In 1994, the semen : extender ratio of 1:6 produced the highest percent hatch (75.6%), followed by 1:2 (65.2%), fresh semen (57.8%), and 1:4 (53.5%). No statistical differences were found for weighted averages of controls and treatments in 1993 (F = 0.76; df = 3,11; P = 0.52) or 1994 (F = 0.76; df = 3,4; P = 0.57). Any of these three semen : extender ratios should provide hatching percentages comparable to those resulting from fresh semen.

The effects of storage container and storage volume, contamination with blood or fecal material, application of ampicillin, and reuse of previously stripped males on the quality of stored semen of walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) were investigated. Experimental and control treatments were evaluated daily with a microscope to determine shelf life and motility time. For the control treatment (standard hard plastic sandwich container with 24 mL of preserved semen), average shelf life was 11.7 d, and average motility time was 51.0 s. Container type had no significant effect on shelf life. Samples contaminated with fecal matter had average shelf life reduced to 2.0 d. The addition of blood significantly increased storage and motility time, but addition of ampicillin did not. Shelf life and motility time did not differ significantly between the first and second stripping of male walleyes, but shelf life of preserved semen from the third stripping was significantly shorter than the control.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The sonographic properties of Fluosol 20% (F20), which was recently approved for clinical use as an oxygen carrier for coronary angioplasty, were compared to those of perflubron emulsion, which is still in clinical testing. METHODS: Contrast agents were evaluated in 21 normal rabbits divided into three groups of seven rabbits each. All rabbits received 2.7 g/kg of perfluorocarbon (PFC). One group received 2.7 ml/kg of an experimental formulation of perflubron emulsion AF0102, which contains 1 g of PFC in 1 ml of emulsion (P100), the other received 13.5 ml/kg of F20 (1 ml has 0.2 g of PFC), and the third received 13.5 ml/kg of P100 diluted to a 20% concentration (P20). All rabbits were scanned by a blinded sonographer before, during, and immediately after infusion, and then again at 30 minutes and 48 hours. Doppler enhancement, echogenicity of inferior vena cava lumen, echogenic enhancement of perfused tissues, and reticuloendothelial organs were assessed. RESULTS: P100 and P20 had nearly identical sonographic properties at all points. During their vascular phase they enhanced Doppler signal, filled the lumen of the IVC and hepatic veins with flowing echogenic reflectors, and enhanced perfused tissues. F20 had no detectable sonographic effect during its vascular phase. All three emulsions enhanced the liver relative to kidney to a similar degree at 48 hours. CONCLUSIONS: Because RE enhancement was similar for F20, P100, and P20, and because P100 and P20 had similar properties during the vascular phase, the lack of vascular effect of F20 could not be due to the different PFCs used in these agents, or due to the difference in the dilution or volume. The most likely cause for the observed sonographic behavior of F20 and P100 is the difference in emulsion formulation.

One of the critical items in radar testing is the ability to perform an end-to-end test. This is frequently accomplished by the use of a standard target-a corner reflector or a repeater. In the case of a weapon location radar such as the European Counter (CO) Battery (B) Radar (RA) (COBRA) or the US AN/TPQ-36 and AN/TPQ-37, this is complicated by the desire to emulate the ballistic trajectory of a shell in flight. Technology Service Corporation (TSC) has developed a smart repeater that uses a long vertical antenna to simulate the vertical trajectory along with sophisticated software to represent the Doppler, range and amplitude changes during the flight. The most recent of these smart repeaters was developed for the COBRA system and is described in this paper.

With the advent of a new airborne radar signal processing technology entitled, "Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP)," previous testing methods have proven inadequate. STAP algorithms minimize the amount of interference competing with the desired signal. The algorithms are complex and their reaction to an actual in the air scenario difficult to predict via analysis and simulation. The desired test is to evaluate the performance on the ground in a controlled environment prior to installation and test in the air. The problem is that although jamming signals can be relatively easily generated, ground clutter, which depends on the aircraft speed, antenna beam width and antenna look angle, is difficult to represent realistically. Technology Service Corporation (TSC) has developed a realistic Radar Ground Clutter Emulator (RAGCLEM) which can be used to test STAP processors.

In the past several centuries, our culture has been permeated by the idea that growth and progress are the hallmarks by which to judge the world. Today this ideology appears to be declining in proximate proportion to the rise of an environmental ideology (environmental paradigms in academic literature). It is shown that in the process of becoming ideological, these paradigms (the antithesis of the progress ideology) have become more convincing to those both inside and outside academia by adding an understanding to our past, present, and future. It is proposed that major ideologies are, unlike the progress ideology, structurally similar, and that academic environmental paradigms duplicate this dominant ideological pattern. This dominant pattern theme is demonstrated by first contrasting the concepts paradigm and ideology, illustrating how they merge conceptually, and verifying the similarity of two historically major ideologies, Marxism and Christianity, with environmental paradigms.

A case of testicular teratocarcinoma metastatic to a mediastinal lymph node and associated with a mediastinal lesion indistinguishable from an enteric cyst is presented. It is postulated that the mediastinal enteric cyst-like lesion resulted from histologic maturation of metastatic teratocarcinoma after intensive chemotherapy. The basis in the medical literature for this postulate is detailed.

Three tall, phenotypic female siblings with XY gonadal dysgenesis were found to have short fourth metacarpal bones (bilateral in two and unilateral in the other). Clitoromegaly was observed in the two older siblings, without hirsutism. Bilateral streak gonads were found in all three. A gonadoblastoma was present in the left streak gonad of the youngest, and an adenomatoid tumor in the left streak gonad of the oldest, who was diabetic. Determination of androgens from peripheral and gonadal venous plasma revealed androgen secretion by the streak gonads. On the basis of clinical findings, familial tendency, and androgen secretion from the streak gonads in these patients, it is proposed that the XY gonadal dysgenesis represents a severe from of male pseudohermaphroditism.

Bronchopleural fistula, although reduced in incidence in recent years, remains a grave complication of pulmonary disease and of pulmonary resection. In a series of 77 patients treated for bronchopleural fistula over a 13 year period, 49 of whom had postresection fistulas, only 44 (57.1 percent) were cured of the fistula and 15 (19.5 percent) died. Prevention assumes great importance. Key factors in prevention are avoidance of pulmonary resection in tuberculous patients with positive sputum; overzealous dissection of the bronchus; a long bronchial stump; tumor in the bronchial stump; contamination of the pleural cavity; and too little tissue left behind to fill the pleural space. Treatment should be surgical. In none of the six patients treated conservatively was the fistula obliterated. Seventy-one patients were treated surgically, and 133 operations were needed to effect fistula obliteration in the 44 patients (62 percent) in whom this was achieved. Adequate surgical drainage has always been the sine qua non of effective treatment, and yet this alone brought about closure of the fistula in only nine patients. Early resuture of the bronchial stump succeeded in only two of five patients. Thoracoplasty combined with drainage effected closure in seven of 11 patients. The highest rate of fistula closure with the lowest mortality occurred among the 20 patients who underwent myoplasty, usually combined with a limited thoracoplasty. In this group, the fistula was obliterated in 16 patients, with one death.

We feel this likely represents cytopathologic changes induced in response to the patient's active tuberculosis. Seventeen patients with malignant pericardial effusion were treated by the creation of a pericardial window. This was done through a subxiphoid approach in 13 patients and through limited anterior thoracotomy or sternotomy incisions in 4. There were no deaths and no major complications attributable to the operation. In all patients, relief of the cardiac compression caused by the effusion was immediate and complete. No patient showed a clinically significant recurrence of the effusion, although 1 patient who had received irradiation required pericardiectomy for constriction 5 months later. Survival was determined principally by the extent of the primary malignancy. Six patients died of the primary tumors within 30 days, but 6 survived 3 to 12 months and 2 are alive at 8 and 21 months. It is concluded that creation of a pericardial window, preferably by the subxiphoid approach, is the treatment of choice for malignant pericardial effusion. The procedure provides an accurate diagnosis, carries virtually no mortality or morbidity, and affords immediate and long-lasting relief of cardiac compression.

From July, 1973, to June, 1977, 25 patients in an immunosuppressed state from underlying reticuloendothelial neoplasm or associated chemotherapy, underwent open biopsy of the lung at the University of Maryland Hospital for diagnosis of unilateral diffuse pulmonary infiltrates. Eight patients were in marked respiratory distress, 13 in moderate distress, and 4 in little or no distress at the time of open lung biopsy. There were 3 postoperative deaths (12%). The operation-related morbidity was 1 out of 25 (4%). Two of the patients who died were found to have irreversible pulmonary fibrosis secondary to bleomycin drug therapy. The subsequent treatment of all 25 patients was influenced by the biopsy findings as follows: upgrading the disease stage or establishing treatment failure in 11 patients; establishing the presence of inflammatory disease in 3 patients; establishing the diagnosis of fibrosis associated with drug treatment without recurrent disease or infection in 11 patients. The preferability of open lung biopsy as opposed to transbronchial or percutaneous techniques is discussed.

Between 1968 and 1978, 26 patients with carcinomas of the thoracic esophagus and 4 with adenocarcinomas involving the esophagogastric junction were treated by the insertion of indwelling intraluminal (endoesophageal) tubes. Four different types of tube were inserted by the pull-through technique. Thirteen of the 30 patients died in the hospital within 30 days. However, among the 20 patients who did not have neoplasms of the upper third of the thoracic esophagus or who had not had a prior resection, only 5 died. The principal cause of death was aspiration pneumonia. Survival averaged 2.5 months. Four patients survived 5 to 7 months. Deglutition was adequate in most patients but was not as satisfactory as after esophagogastrectomy. Our best results were obtained in patients with carcinoma of the middle or lower third of the esophagus, with or without an esophagorespiratory fistula, who had not had a previous resection.

Forty-eight consecutive patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) attended by generalized weakness were treated by complete thymectomy, performed transsternally in 46 patients and through a left thoracotomy in two with thymomas. There were no operative deaths. A 12-year-old child with fulminating MG died of acute pneumonia shortly after hospital discharge. Of the remaining 47 evaluable patients, thymectomy resulted in complete remission in six, marked improvement with a reduced need for medication in 20, and mild improvement on the same dosage of medication in 18. Neither the age of the patient, nor the histopathology of the excised thymus, nor the postoperative change in acetylcholine receptor antibody titer were found to have a significant influence on the response to thymectomy. If the ten patients who were 20 years of age or younger were excluded, the patients with a shorter duration of MG achieved a better response to operation. The authors conclude that thymectomy is effective treatment for MG, regardless of the age of the patient or the type of thymic pathology.

Seventy-three patients with Pancoast's tumor treated at the University of Maryland Hospital between 1955 and 1978 were reviewed. There were 34 squamous cell carcinomas, 13 undifferentiated, 10 adenocarcinomas, 4 mixed adeno-squamous, 1 alveolar cell, and 11 undetermined. Twenty-nine patients received irradiation, with 7% survival at 3 years; 19 patients underwent preoperative irradiation followed by en bloc resection of chest wall, with 23% survival at 3 years; 5 patients underwent extended resection, with 60% survival at 3 years; and 18 patients underwent operation followed by irradiation, with 7% survival at 3 years. Retrospective staging of 42 patients undergoing operation indicated that 22 (52%) were inoperable. Prognosis was related to staging of the disease, the extent of local invasion, nodal involvement, cell type, and adequacy of operation.
