Abstract In this work we report the white light emission in transparent Cr:YAG ceramic pellet upon irradiation with focused beam of CW infrared laser diode. It was found that this phenomenon is specifically related to interaction of laser beam with a surface of the pellet. The white light was emitted outside an irradiated spot at the surface of the pellet and did not penetrate inside the pellet. Moreover, the red emission related to two-photon absorption along the laser beam penetrating the Cr3+:YAG pellet was observed. Interaction of the laser beam with the surface of the pellet leads to an efficient white light emission from an outer side of the pellet. The resulting white light emission did not entry back the pellet. Multiphoton ionization leading to intervalence charge transfer followed by light emission was proposed as the mechanism of experimentally observed white light emission.

The coherence properties of white light emission of a tungsten incandescent lamp additionally excited with laser radiation are investigated. The degree of spatial coherence is determined from measurements of the contrast of interference fringe patterns obtained for a tungsten bulb as the light source. It is demonstrated that the degree of spatial coherence of an incandescent lamp is increased by additional excitation of the filament with focused laser radiation. Furthermore, the degree of spatial coherence can be adjusted by selecting the voltage applied to the filament. Such light sources can find applications in imaging techniques where precise control of spatial coherence of illumination is required.

This paper investigates the microwave breakdown threshold in a circular waveguide excited in the lowest order (TE11) mode, where the electric field strength depends on both the radius and the azimuthal angle. This analysis complements and extends previous investigations of breakdown in cylindrical waveguides and resonators that have been restricted to circularly symmetric waveguide modes so far. A simple analytical approximation of the breakdown threshold of the TE11 mode is found, using a direct variational approach. The predictions are compared with the results of numerical calculations and the agreement is found to be very good. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the synthesis and characterization of graphene-polymer composites, focusing on their mechanical and antibacterial properties. Graphene flakes were obtained via an electrochemical method and integrated into polyamide 6 (PA6) matrices using melt intercalation. Various characterization techniques confirmed the quality of the graphene flakes, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) imaging. Mechanical tests showed an increase in the elastic modulus with graphene incorporation, while the impact strength decreased. The SEM analysis highlighted the dispersion of the graphene flakes within the composites and their impact on fracture behavior. Antimicrobial tests demonstrated significant antibacterial properties of the composites, attributed to both oxidative stress and mechanical damage induced by the graphene flakes. The results suggest promising applications for graphene-polymer composites in advanced antimicrobial materials.

Aluminum garnets display exceptional adaptability in incorporating mismatching elements, thereby facilitating the synthesis of novel materials with tailored properties. This study explored Ce 3+ -doped Tb 3 Al 5-x Sc x O 12 crystals (where x ranges from 0.5 to 3.0), revealing a novel approach to control luminescence and photoconversion through atomic size mismatch engineering. Raman spectroscopy confirmed the coexistence of garnet and perovskite phases, with Sc substitution significantly influencing the garnet lattice and induced A 1g mode softening up to Sc concentration x = 2.0. The Sc atoms controlled sub-eutectic inclusion formation, creating efficient light scattering centers and unveiling a compositional threshold for octahedral site saturation. This modulation enabled the control of energy transfer dynamics between Ce 3+ and Tb 3+ ions, enhancing luminescence and mitigating quenching. The Sc admixing process regulated luminous efficacy (LE), color rendering index (CRI), and correlated color temperature (CCT), with adjustments in CRI from 68 to 84 and CCT from 3545 K to 12,958 K. The Ce 3+ -doped Tb 3 Al 5-x Sc x O 12 crystal (where x = 2.0) achieved the highest LE of 114.6 lm/W and emitted light at a CCT of 4942 K, similar to daylight white. This approach enables the design and development of functional materials with tailored optical properties applicable to lighting technology, persistent phosphors, scintillators, and storage phosphors.

In this study, graphene flakes were obtained using an electrolytic method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and FTIR spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM). Graphene-based composites with varying concentrations of 0.5%, 1% and 3% by weight were prepared with acrylic paint, enamel and varnish matrices. The mechanical properties were evaluated using micro-hardness testing, while wettability and antimicrobial activity against three pathogens ( Staphylococcus aureus 33591, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 15442, Candida albicans 10231) were also examined. The results indicate that the addition of graphene flakes significantly enhances both the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of the coatings.

Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were prepared using the electrolytic exfoliation method on graphite foil in an ammonium sulfate solution. A series of experiments were conducted in order to optimize the production of the flakes by varying the pH of the solution, applied voltage and current, duration of electrolysis, temperature in the electrolytic system, and type and duration of the ultrasound interaction. The quality of the produced graphene nanoplatelets was analyzed using X-ray diffraction, Raman and IR spectroscopy, and TEM.

The synthesis and structural characteristics of nanocrystalline LaAlO 3 perovskites doped with different concentrations of Nd 3+ ions are reported. Their excitation and Stokes emission spectra, in which significant concentration quenching was observed, were recorded and characterized. The measurements of anti-Stokes laser induced white emission (LIWE) spectra were also performed. It was found that the LIWE intensity increased exponentially with the excitation laser power above the excitation threshold. In particular, the concentration and pressure dependences of the LIWE spectra of La 1- x Nd x AlO 3 were investigated. Despite the pronounced concentration quenching observed in the Stokes emission, no such effect could be observed in the anti-Stokes one. A possible inter-valence charge transfer (IVCT) mechanism for the white emission, in which different bands that were observed correspond to different valences of Nd, is proposed.

In this work, Ba 2 MgWO 6 : Eu 3+ (BMW: Eu 3+ ) ceramic materials with a double perovskite structure were sintered using the High-Pressure Low-Temperature sintering (HPLT) technique. As part of the research, the influence of pressure (CP), sintering temperature (CT), and sintering time (CTS) on the structure and luminescence of the doped BMW were determined. Structural analysis via XRD and SEM + EDS and spectroscopic analysis via emission and excitation spectra, decay time, and absorption spectra of the obtained ceramics were performed. Dense double perovskite ceramics were obtained with a cubic structure with optimal sintering parameters: T = 500 °C, p = 8 GPa, and t = 1 min. The increase in temperature caused an increased extinction of the luminescence due to the diffusion of carbon into the ceramics. The increase in pressure led to the formation of the amorphous phase, which increased the speed of non-radiative transitions and also led to the extinction of the luminescence. The increase in sintering time from 1 to 3 min enhanced the luminescence output, but when the ceramic was sintered for 5 min, the luminescence was quenched, most likely by increasing the rate of the non-radiative process, as evidenced by reduced decay time.

Laser-induced white emission of diamond was investigated under irradiation with a focused beam of an infrared laser diode. It is a surface-related coherent emission, characterized by an excitation threshold and an exponential dependence on pumping laser power. The mechanism of white emission is discussed in terms of multiphoton ionization of carbon atoms in an irradiated spot. The excitation power dependence of white emission intensity has demonstrated hysteresis loop behavior. This phenomenon could be useful in new broadband laser sources and optical information storage.

In the presented work, the tellurite glasses TeO 2 -WO 3 -ZnO doped with Tm 3+ and Ho 3+ ions were prepared by the same glass forming method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) techniques were used to study the effects of the forming technology on the thermal and structural properties of the fabricated glasses. After controlled crystallization of investigated glasses, the emission in the VIS- and NIR range was determined. The effect of silver doping on emission intensity was investigated. The value of the activation energy of the glass crystallization process was determined, while the E a value for pure TeO 2 glass was much lower than for tellurite glasses TeO 2 -WO 3 -ZnO.

A new method of hydrogen generation from water, by irradiation with CW infrared laser diode of graphene scaffold immersed in solution, is reported. Hydrogen production was extremely efficient upon admixing NaCl into water. The efficiency of hydrogen production increased exponentially with laser power. It was shown that hydrogen production was highly efficient when the intense white light emission induced by laser irradiation of graphene foam was occurring. The mechanism of laser-induced dissociation of water is discussed. It was found that hydrogen production was extremely high, at about 80%, and assisted by a small emission of O 2 , CO and CO 2 gases.

The measurements of laser induced emission (LIE) of a tungsten filament upon irradiation with the focused beam of a CW IR laser diode are reported. It was found that the emission occurred in visible and infrared range. The influence of the applied DC electric field significantly affected the intensity of LIE of the tungsten filament. The origin of LIE is discussed in terms of multiphoton ionization of tungsten W + atoms assisted by light emission due to the intervalence charge transfer in the tungsten hybrid domain (W, W + ).

The present work demonstrates a new concept of the efficient generation of hydrogen from methanol by the continuous wave laser diode irradiation of an immersed graphene aerogel (GA) scaffold as the target. It was observed that the process occurred very intensively when it was assisted by bright white light emission in the spot of a laser-irradiated GA scaffold. The yield of hydrogen emission increased exponentially with the applied laser power. The light emission was assisted by the intense production of H 2 , CH 4 , and CO gases. It was found that with increasing excitation laser power, the H 2 generation increased at the expense of CO. It is shown that the volume of CO decreases because of the formation of C 2 molecules and CO 2 gases. The mechanism of the laser-driven dissociation of methanol was discussed in terms of the violent ejection of hot electrons from the GA surface as a result of the laser-induced light emission of the graphene target., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2021 The Authors. The Stokes and anti-Stokes emission spectra generated from Sr2CeO4/graphene flake composites were investigated. The excitation and emission spectra, decay profiles and quantum efficiency of the studied materials were collected. It was found that the addition of graphene flakes (GFs) significantly affects spectroscopic properties. In particular, the anti-Stokes laser induced white emission spectra were analyzed as a function of excitation laser power, and ambient atmospheric pressure. The influence of graphene flakes concentration on laser induced photocurrent was investigated. The color of their emission significantly differs from the color of other tested composites. In particular, the impact of graphene concentration on the investigated features will be presented and mechanisms responsible for the observed effects will be discussed.

Graphene, a two-dimensional structure of carbon, due to its structure has unique physico-chemical properties that can be used in numerous research and industry areas. Although this structure is already well known, there are still technological (and cost) barriers which do not allow to produce this material in large quantities and hence prevent its use in various applications. For this reason, many technologies are currently being developed to obtain graphene in forms that would enable its widespread use. The graphene-like ceramics were fabricated by the high isostatic pressure method at different temperatures. This technique allows to obtain dense ceramics with various shapes. The structure and morphology of sintered graphene were investigated by XRD, SEM and the Raman spectroscopy. The hardness, thermal conductivity and electric transport measurements recorded in a wide range of temperatures were used to analyze the physical properties of the obtained ceramics.

Nanocrystalline La 0.9 A 0.1 MnO 3 (where A is Li, Na, K) powders were synthesized by a combustion method. The powders used to prepare nanoceramics were fabricated via a high-temperature sintering method. The structure and morphology of all compounds were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the size of the crystallites depended on the type of alkali ions used. The high-pressure sintering method kept the nanosized character of the grains in the ceramics, which had a significant impact on their physical properties. Magnetization studies were performed for both powder and ceramic samples in order to check the impact of the alkali ion dopants as well as the sintering pressure on the magnetization of the compounds. It was found that, by using different dopants, it was possible to strongly change the magnetic characteristics of the manganites.

The direct propulsion of glassy capsule filled with solution of methanol and disperse graphene foam (GF) particles under irradiation with infrared LED is reported. The vertical propulsion occurred after irradiation of transparent glassy bottom. The velocity of propulsion was dependent of light irradiation power. It was observed that with irradiation the GF particles moved violently and vertically with direction of lighting. It was found that upon light irradiation there is generated efficiently hydrogen upon solution surface. The mechanism of propulsion effect was discussed in terms of the explosive hydrogen-oxygen reaction.

This paper focuses on the kinetics of Cr 4+ formation in Cr,Ca:YAG ceramics prepared by solid-state reaction sintering. The kinetics of Cr 4+ formation was studied by annealing of Cr,Ca:YAG ceramics in ambient air under different temperatures at different times, resulting in the transformation of Cr 3+ to Cr 4+ . The activation energy (E a ) of Cr 3+ oxidation determined by the Jander model was 2.7 ± 0.2 eV, which is in good correlation with the activation energy of innergrain oxygen diffusion in the YAG lattice. It is concluded that Cr 3+ to Cr 4+ transformation in YAG ceramics is limited by oxygen diffusion through the grain body. It was established that in Cr,Ca:YAG ceramics, the intralattice cation exchange, in which the Cr 4+ ions exchange positions with the Al 3+ ions, switching from "A" to "D" sites, is faster than Cr 3+ to Cr 4+ oxidation. In the temperature range of 900-1300 °C, the reaction enthalpy of Al 3+ /Cr 4+ ion exchange between octahedral "A" and tetrahedral "D" lattice sites is close to zero, and this exchange ratio is thermodynamically driven by entropy.

Laser induced white light emission was observed from porous graphene foam irradiated with a focused continuous wave beam of the infrared laser diode. It was found that the intensity of the emission increases exponentially with increasing laser power density, having a saturation level at ca. 1.5 W and being characterized by stable emission conditions. It was also observed that the white light emission is spatially confined to the focal point dimensions of the illuminating laser light. Several other features of the laser induced white light emission were also discussed. It was observed that the white light emission is highly dependent on the electric field intensity, allowing one to modulate the emission intensity. The electric field intensity ca. 0.5 V/μm was able to decrease the white light intensity by half. Origins of the laser-induced white light emission along with its characteristic features were discussed in terms of avalanche multiphoton ionization, inter-valence charge transfer and possible plasma build-up processes. It is shown that the laser-induced white light emission may be well utilized in new types of white light sources.

The laser induced white emission (LIWE) from Sr 2 CeO 4 nanocrystals upon irradiation with a focused IR laser beam was investigated. It was observed to be a threshold phenomenon with its intensity increasing exponentially with the excitation power density. This process was investigated under double laser beam simultaneous excitation in the UV range leading to Stokes emission in the visible range and in the IR range leading to anti-Stokes LIWE. With increasing LIWE intensity, the Stokes emission intensity strongly decreased. The LIWE is accompanied by efficient photocurrent generation depending on laser excitation density followed by multiphoton absorption and ionization processes. Photoimpedance measurements showed a sharp increase of the dielectric constant by several orders of magnitude in the Sr 2 CeO 4 nanocrystals during the LIWE process demonstrating a metallic-like behaviour. The mechanisms of LIWE include multiphoton absorption and ionization that lead to the creation of a coupled pair of Ce 3+ and Ce 4+ ions that allow for the intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) emission transitions in the white light range. A strong decrease of absorption band intensity of Sr 2 CeO 4 with increasing LIWE intensity confirms the creation of (Ce 3+ , Ce 4+ ) pairs.

This paper presents a decision support system that aims to estimate a patient׳s general condition and detect situations which pose an immediate danger to the patient׳s health or life. The use of this system might be especially important in places such as accident and emergency departments or admission wards, where a small medical team has to take care of many patients in various general conditions. Particular stress is laid on cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions, including those leading to sudden cardiac arrest. The proposed system is a stand-alone microprocessor-based device that works in conjunction with a standard vital signs monitor, which provides input signals such as temperature, blood pressure, pulseoxymetry, ECG, and ICG. The signals are preprocessed and analysed by a set of artificial intelligence algorithms, the core of which is based on Bayesian networks. A new type of near infrared absorbing near infrared emitting (NANE) luminescent nanothermometer is presented, with a physical background that relies on efficient Nd(3+) to Yb(3+) energy transfer under 808 nm photo-excitation. The emission spectra of LiLa0.9-xNd0.1YbxP4O12 (x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5) nanocrystals were measured in a wide 100-700 °C temperature range. The ratio between the Nd(3+) ((4)F3/2→(4)I9/2) and Yb(3+) ((2)F5/2→(2)F7/2) luminescence bands, and the thermometer sensitivity were found to be strongly dependent on the Yb(3+) concentration. These phenomenological relations were discussed in terms of the competition between three phenomena, namely (a) Nd(3+)→ Yb(3+) phonon assisted energy transfer, (b) Yb(3+)→ Nd(3+) back energy transfer and (c) energy diffusion between Yb(3+) ions. The highest sensitivity of the temperature measurement was found for x = 0.5 (LiLa0.4Nd0.1Yb0.5P4O12), which was equal to 4 × 10(-3) K(-1) at 330 K. In stark contrast to conventional approaches, the proposed phosphate host matrix allows for a high level of doping, and thus, owing to the negligible concentration quenching, the presented luminophores exhibit a high absorption cross section and bright emission. Moreover, such optical remote thermometers, whose excitation and emission wavelengths are weakly scattered or absorbed and fall into the optical transmission window of the skin, may therefore become a practical solution for biomedical applications, such as remote control of thermotherapy.

The up-converting nanocrystals of KLa0.95Er0.05Y bxP4O12 and La0.95-xEr0.05Y bxP5O14 were prepared using co-precipitation method. The spectroscopic properties of these materials were investigated in a function of Y b(3+) concentration. The up-conversion emission, power dependence of emission intensities, and the luminescence decay times were investigated. It was found that the green to red and (2)H11/2 → (4)I15/2 to (4)S3/2 → (4)I15/2 emission intensity ratio were strongly affected by the Y b(3+) concentration. Moreover, the order of up-conversion emission and threshold power rises up with Y b(3+) concentration for (4)S3/2 → (4)I15/2 transition. The luminescence decay time of the (4)S3/2 → (4)I15/2 emission increases with Y b(3+) concentration while the (4)F9/2 → (4)I15/2 emission is independent of dopant concentration. The influence of the Y b(3+) concentration on the up-conversion emission intensities was discussed in terms of concentration dependent hetero looped photon avalanche process. A comparison of the up-conversion properties of KLa0.95Er0.05Y bxP4O12 and La0.95-xEr0.05Y bxP5O14 nanocrystals was presented.
