1. Initial concept for the plasma diagnostic and control system for the European DEMO tokamak reactor

Abstract: The development of the plasma diagnostic and control (D&C) system for a future tokamak demonstration fusion reactor (DEMO) is facing unprecedented challenges. The DEMO D&C system has to operate with very high reliability, since any loss of plasma control may result in machine damage. On the same time, high accuracy of the D&C system is needed in order to allow for plasma operation near operational limits, where the fusion power is maximized. The implementation and performance of diagnostic components is however limited by space restrictions (optimization of the tritium breeding rate; integrity of the first wall and divertor against loads), and by adverse effects acting on the front-end components (neutron and gamma radiation, heat loads, erosion and deposition). Finally, the capabilities of the available actuators (poloidal field coils, external heating and fueling) are limited as well. As part of the European DEMO conceptual design studies, the development of the D&C system has recently been launched [1]. A preliminary suite of candidate diagnostics for DEMO have been selected, aiming to cover all the main plasma control quantities with some redundancy, and choosing types and locations for diagnostic front-end components such that long-term durability with minimum need for maintenance can be expected under typical loads (e.g. neutron radiation, particle fluxes and fluencies). Specifically, only robust metallic or ceramics diagnostic components shall be used inside the vacuum vessel, while the more sensitive components shall be located at more remote (protected) positions. This initial plasma diagnostic suite comprises microwave diagnostics, magnetic coil based and Hall sensors, passive spectroscopy and radiation power measurements, divertor thermo-current measurement, infrared interferometry/polarimetry and neutron-gamma measurements. In the first R&D phase the possibilities and conditions for integration of diagnostic sightlines and front-end components into the machine have been investigated, and an understanding of the required number of channels and components has been obtained. The conditions for controllability of the DEMO plasma are being analyzed by numerical simulations. To this purpose, the transport modelling code ASTRA, coupled to a radiation module, has been connected to the Simulink simulation framework, and the performance properties of diagnostics and actuators are being added [2]. Similarly, the existing CREATE equilibrium code is being amended to include limitations of diagnostics and actuators, such that the controllability e.g. of fast VDEs can be simulated under DEMO relevant settings. Furthermore, predictive control oriented models such as RAPTOR are being further developed as an alternative approach to analyze the controllability of DEMO. The common goal is to arrive at numerical simulations which closely mimic the control of the DEMO plasma such that the controllability based on the available diagnostics and actuators can be demonstrated quantitatively. Based on these R&D results, an initial version of the DEMO diagnostic and control concept has been elaborated and will be presented in this paper.

Moreover, high accuracy of the D&C system is needed in order to operate near operational limits, where the power output of the reactor is maximised. On the other hand, space restrictions for the implementation of diagnostic components in the blanket (optimization of the tritium breeding rate), and lifetime issues for the front-end components (neutron and gamma radiation, heat loads, erosion and deposition) will limit the performance of measurements, while the capabilities of the available actuators (poloidal field coils, external heating and fuelling) are limited as well. As part of the European DEMO conceptual design studies, the development of the D&C system has recently been launched [1]. An initial understanding of the prime choices of diagnostic methods and actuators applicable to DEMO has been obtained, and the conditions for controllability of the DEMO plasma are being analysed quantitatively by numerical simulations. First results and plans for future R&D will be presented.

3. Time-dependent changes in spontaneous respiratory activity in turtle brainstems in vitro

Abstract: Our goal was to determine whether time-dependent changes in respiratory motor output in vitro could be minimized by altering bath solution composition. Adult turtle brainstems were bathed in standard solution, nutrient-rich Dulbecco's Eagle media (100 or 25% concentration), or standard solution with phenylbiguanide (PBG, 5-HT3 agonist which increases respiratory drive). Except for a 63% frequency increase in PBG solution, hypoglossal bursts were unaltered within 100 min of observation. Respiratory activity was abolished within 7 h in 100% Dulbecco's compared with a mean of 24-31 h in other test solutions. At 12 h, burst frequency decreased faster in standard solution and 25% Dulbecco's (-0.28+/-0.07 and -0.13+/-0.05 bursts/h, respectively) compared with PBG solution (-0.09+/-0.04 bursts/h); amplitude declined at approximately 2%/h in all solutions. The tendency for episodic discharge decreased gradually in standard solution, but was eliminated in 25% Dulbecco's and PBG solution. Certain bath solutions may minimize time-dependent frequency reductions but may also cause breathing pattern changes.

Abstract: The Demonstration Fusion Power Reactor DEMO is the step foreseen to bridge the gap between ITER and the first commercial fusion power plant. One key element in the European work plan for DEMO is the elaboration of a conceptual design for a suitable core particle fuelling system. First considerations for such a system are presented in this contribution. Following the well-considered ITER solution, most analysis performed in this study assumes conventional pellet technology will be used for the fuelling system. However, taking advantage of the less compressed time frame for the DEMO project, several other techniques thought to bear potential for advanced fuelling performance are considered as well. In a first, basic analysis all actuation parameters at hand and their implications on the fuelling performance were considered. Tentative transport modeling of a reference scenario strongly indicates only particles deposited inside the plasma pedestal allow for efficient fuelling. Shallow edge fuelling results in an unbearable burden on the fuel cycle. Sufficiently deep particle deposition seems technically achievable, provided pellets are launched from the torus inboard at sufficient speed. All components required for a DEMO pellet system capable for high speed inboard pellet launch are already available or can be developed in due time with reasonable efforts. Furthermore, steps to integrate this solution into the EU DEMO model are taken.

Abstract: Brain stem preparations from adult turtles were used to determine how bath-applied serotonin (5-HT) alters respiration-related hypoglossal activity in a mature vertebrate. 5-HT (5–20 μM) reversibly decreased integrated burst amplitude by ∼45% ( P < 0.05); burst frequency decreased in a dose-dependent manner with 20 μM abolishing bursts in 9 of 13 preparations ( P < 0.05). These 5-HT-dependent effects were mimicked by application of a 5-HT1A agonist, but not a 5-HT1B agonist, and were abolished by the broad-spectrum 5-HT antagonist, methiothepin. During 5-HT (20 μM) washout, frequency rebounded to levels above the original baseline for 40 min ( P < 0.05) and remained above baseline for 2 h. A 5-HT3 antagonist (tropesitron) blocked the post-5-HT rebound and persistent frequency increase. A 5-HT3 agonist (phenylbiguanide) increased frequency during and after bath application ( P < 0.05). When phenylbiguanide was applied to the brain stem of brain stem/spinal cord preparations, there was a persistent frequency increase ( P < 0.05), but neither spinal-expiratory nor -inspiratory burst amplitude were altered. The 5-HT3receptor-dependent persistent frequency increase represents a unique model of plasticity in vertebrate rhythm generation.

Abstract: Based on testing of the Uniform Needs Assessment Instrument (UNAI), a nursing needs assessment tool for adult hospitalized patients was integrated into nursing practice. Some content and format changes to the UNAI occurred as a result of the research process. The revised assessment form is called the Nursing Needs Assessment Instrument (NNAI). Community providers, including nursing home and home health care personnel, use the NNAI to derive necessary admission data for assessing patients, planning care, and communicating with other staff regarding patient needs. Instituting an evidence-based practice change in hospital discharge forms enables the next care provider to consistently meet the patient's continuing needs.

Abstract: For the design and the operation of large fusion devices a detailed understanding of the power exhaust processes is necessary. This paper will give an overview of the current research on the divertor power load mechanisms. The results shown are obtained in JET with the ITER like wall and ASDEX Upgrade with tungsten coated plasma facing components. The challenges of infrared thermography on an ITER like bulk tungsten divertor are presented. For the steady state heat load, the power fall-off length q in JET-ILW is compared to an empirical scaling found in JET and ASDEX Upgrade with carbon plasma facing components. A first attempt to scale the divertor broadening S in ASDEX Upgrade with tungsten plasma facing components is shown. The ELM duration tELM in JET-C and JET-ILW is compared. For similar pedestal conditions (Te,ped and ne,ped), similar ELM durations are found in JET-C and JET-ILW. For higher ne,ped at the same pedestal pressure pe,ped, longer ELM durations are found in JET-ILW. The pedestal pressure pe,ped is found to be a good qualifier for the ELM energy fluency in both JET-C and JET-ILW. Improved diagnostic capabilities reveal ELM substructures on the divertor target occurring a few milliseconds before the ELM crash.

Abstract: The ASDEX Upgrade programme is directed towards physics input to critical elements of the ITER design and the preparation of ITER operation, as well as addressing physics issues for a future DEMO design. After the finalization of the tungsten coating of the plasma facing components, the re-availability of all flywheel-generators allowed high-power operation with up to 20 MW heating power at I p up to 1.2 MA. Implementation of alternative ECRH schemes (140 GHz O2- and X3-mode) facilitated central heating above n e = 1.2 × 1020 m−3 and low q 95 operation at B t = 1.8 T. Central O2-mode heating was successfully used in high P/R discharges with 20 MW total heating power and divertor load control with nitrogen seeding. Improved energy confinement is obtained with nitrogen seeding both for type-I and type-III ELMy conditions. The main contributor is increased plasma temperature, no significant changes in the density profile have been observed. This behaviour may be explained by higher pedestal temperatures caused by ion dilution in combination with a pressure limited pedestal and hollow nitrogen profiles. Core particle transport simulations with gyrokinetic calculations have been benchmarked by dedicated discharges using variations of the ECRH deposition location. The reaction of normalized electron density gradients to variations of temperature gradients and the T e/T i ratio could be well reproduced. Doppler reflectometry studies at the L–H transition allowed the disentanglement of the interplay between the oscillatory geodesic acoustic modes, turbulent fluctuations and the mean equilibrium E × B flow in the edge negative E r well region just inside the separatrix. Improved pedestal diagnostics revealed also a refined picture of the pedestal transport in the fully developed H-mode type-I ELM cycle. Impurity ion transport turned out to be neoclassical in between ELMs. Electron and energy transport remain anomalous, but exhibit different recovery time scales after an ELM. After recovery of the pre-ELM profiles, strong fluctuations develop in the gradients of n e and T e. The occurrence of the next ELM cannot be explained by the local current diffusion time scale, since this turns out to be too short. Fast ion losses induced by shear Alfvén eigenmodes have been investigated by time-resolved energy and pitch angle measurements. This allowed the separation of the convective and diffusive loss mechanisms.

9. Simulation of water use dynamics by Salix bush in a semiarid shallow groundwater area of the Chinese Erdos Plateau

Abstract: This study analyzed the water use of the Salix psammophila bush in a semi-arid area in northwest China using a Hydrus-1D model. The model incorporated the effect of thermally driven water flow coupling liquid water, water vapor and heat transport. The model was calibrated and validated using hourly field measurements of soil water content and temperature at different depths for a growing season of 154 days. Furthermore, another Hydrus-1D model was established to simulate environments with decreased heat, rainfall or temperature and an increased leaf area index using calibrated and validated parameters. Our results show that upward and downward thermally driven water vapor fluxes account for 0.11% and 0.28%, respectively, of the corresponding direction of total water flux during the bush’s growing season. Although the vapor flux is very small, simulations incorporating heat flow revealed alterations in the temperature and pressure head gradients over the root zone, especially during dry periods. Consequently, the cumulative contributions of groundwater to evapotranspiration (ETg) with heat flow and without heat flow were 26.9% and 40.6%, respectively, during the simulation period. Therefore, the cumulative contribution of groundwater to ETg is overestimated when heat flow is excluded. Thus, we recommended that heat transport be incorporated when evaluating ETg in arid and semi-arid areas.

Abstract: In vitro brainstem and brainstem-spinal cord preparations were used to determine the role of synaptic inhibition in respiratory rhythm generation in adult turtles. Bath application of bicuculline (a GABA(A) receptor antagonist) to brainstems increased hypoglossal burst frequency and amplitude, with peak discharge shifted towards the burst onset. Strychnine (a glycine receptor antagonist) increased amplitude and frequency, and decreased burst duration, but only at relatively high concentrations (10-100 microM). Rhythmic activity persisted during combined bicuculline and strychnine application (50 microM each) with increased amplitude and frequency, decreased burst duration, and a rapid onset-decrementing burst pattern. The bicuculline-strychnine rhythm frequency decreased during mu-opioid receptor activation or decreased bath P(C)(O(2)). Synaptic inhibition blockade in the brainstem of brainstem-spinal cord preparations increased burst amplitude in spinal expiratory (pectoralis) nerves and nearly abolished spinal inspiratory activity (serratus nerves), suggesting that medullary expiratory motoneurons were mainly active. Under conditions of synaptic inhibition blockade in vitro, the turtle respiratory network was able to produce a rhythm that was sensitive to characteristic respiratory stimuli, perhaps via an expiratory (rather than inspiratory) pacemaker-driven mechanism. Thus, these data indicate that the adult turtle respiratory rhythm generator has the potential to operate in a pacemaker-driven manner.

Abstract: Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. Abstract: Demonstrating the production of net electricity and operating with a closed fuel-cycle remain unarguably the crucial steps towards the exploitation of fusion power. These are the aims of a demonstration fusion reactor (DEMO) proposed to be built after ITER. This paper briefly describes the DEMO design options that are being considered in Europe for the current conceptual design studies as part of the Roadmap to Fusion Electricity Horizon 2020. These are not intended to represent fixed and exclusive design choices but rather ‘proxies’ of possible plant design options to be used to identify generic design/material issues that need to be resolved in future fusion reactor systems. The materials nuclear design requirements and the effects of radiation damage are briefly analysed with emphasis on a pulsed ‘low extrapolation’ system, which is being used for the initial design integration studies, based as far as possible on mature technologies and reliable regimes of operation (to be extrapolated from the ITER experience), and on the use of materials suitable for the expected level of neutron fluence. The main technical issues arising from the plasma and nuclear loads and the effects of radiation damage particularly on the structural and heat sink materials of the vessel and in-vessel components are critically discussed. The need to establish realistic target performance and a development schedule for near-term electricity production tends to favour more conservative technology choices. The readiness of the technical (physics and technology) assumptions that are being made is expected to be an important factor for the selection of the technical features of the device. 13. A stepladder approach to a tokamak fusion power plant.

Abstract: We present an approach to design in a consistent way a stepladder connecting ITER, DEMO and an FPP, starting from an attractive FPP and then locating DEMO such that main similarity parameters for the core scenario are constant. The approach presented suggests how to use ITER such that DEMO can be extrapolated with maximum confidence and a development path for plasma scenarios in ITER follows from our approach, moving from low βN and q typical for the present Q = 10 scenario to higher values needed for steady state. A numerical example is given, indicative of the feasibility of the approach, and it is backed up by more detailed 1.5-D calculation using the ASTRA code. We note that ideal MHD stability analysis of the DEMO operating point indicates that it is located between the no-wall and the ideal wall β-limit, which may require active stabilization. Abstract: For several reasons the challenge to keep the loads to the first wall within engineering limits is substantially higher in DEMO compared to ITER. Therefore the pre-conceptual design development for DEMO that is currently ongoing in Europe needs to be based on load estimates that are derived employing the most recent plasma edge physics knowledge. An initial assessment of the static wall heat load limit in DEMO infers that the steady state peak heat flux limit on the majority of the DEMO first wall should not be assumed to be higher than 1.0 MW m−2. This compares to an average wall heat load of 0.29 MW m−2 for the design assuming a perfect homogeneous distribution. The main part of this publication concentrates on the development of first DEMO estimates for charged particle, radiation, fast particle (all static) and disruption heat loads. Employing an initial engineering wall design with clear optimization potential in combination with parameters for the flat-top phase (x-point configuration), loads up to 7 MW m−2 (penalty factor for tolerances etc not applied) have been calculated. Assuming a fraction of power radiated from the x-point region between 1/5 and 1/3, peaks of the total power flux density due to radiation of 0.6–0.8 MW m−2 are found in the outer baffle region. This first review of wall loads, and the associated limits in DEMO clearly underlines a significant challenge that necessitates substantial engineering efforts as well as a considerable consolidation of the associated physics basis. Abstract: Although the ultimate goal of most current fusion research is to build an economically attractive power plant, the present status of physics and technology does not provide the performance necessary to achieve this goal. Therefore, in order to model how such plants may operate and what their output might be, extrapolations must be made from existing experimental data and technology. However, the expected performance of a plant built to the operating point specifications can only ever be a ‘best guess’. Extrapolations far beyond the current operating regimes are necessarily uncertain, and some important interactions, for example the coupling of conducted power from the scape-off layer to the divertor surface, lack reliable predictive models. This means both that the demands on plant systems at the target operating point can vary significantly from the nominal value, and that the overall plant performance may potentially fall short of design targets. In this contribution we discuss tools and techniques that have been developed to assess the robustness of the operating points for the EU-DEMO tokamak-based demonstration power plant, and the consequences for its design. The aim is to make explicit the design choices and areas where improved modelling and DEMO-relevant experiments will have the greatest impact on confidence in a successful DEMO design. Fusion55 033001) on the claimed size independence of fusion power, triple product and fusion gain in tokamak reactors, and we show that all these three quantities actually do depend on the size of the tokamak, when distinguishing between independent input parameters (design parameters) and output quantities, and when taking into account technological limitations. Abstract: As a next-step in the tokamak-based fusion programme, the DEMO fusion reactor is foreseen to produce relevant output electricity, in the order of ∼500 MW delivered to the network. The scenarios that are being presently investigated consist of a pulsed device, called DEMO1, and a steady-state device, called DEMO2. In this work, which is focused on the pulsed device DEMO1, scenarios are studied from the point of view of core transport, to assess plasma performance and limitations due to core microinstabilities. The role of radiated power, aspect ratio, and height of temperature pedestal are assessed as they impact both core energy and particle transport. Open issues in this framework are also discussed. Abstract: A large scale program to develop a conceptual design for a demonstration fusion power plant (DEMO) has been initiated in Europe. Central elements are the baseline design points, which are developed by system codes. The assessment of the credibility of these design points is often hampered by missing information. The main physics and technology content of the central European system codes have been published (Kovari et al 2014 Fusion Eng. Des. 89 3054–69, 2016 Fusion Eng. Des. 104 9–20, Reux et al 2015 Nucl. Fusion55 073011). In addition, this publication discusses key input parameters for the pulsed and conservative design option and provides justifications for the parameter choices. In this context several DEMO physics gaps are identified, which need to be addressed in the future to reduce the uncertainty in predicting the performance of the device. Also the sensitivities of net electric power and pulse duration to variations of the input parameters are investigated. The most extreme sensitivity is found for the elongation ( corresponds to ). 19. Radiation and confinement in 0D fusion systems codes.

Abstract: In systems modelling for fusion power plants, it is essential to robustly predict the performance of a given machine design (including its respective operating scenario). One measure of machine performance is the energy confinement time that is typically predicted from experimentally derived confinement scaling laws (e.g. IPB98(y,2)). However, the conventionally used scaling laws have been derived for ITER which—unlike a fusion power plant—will not have significant radiation inside the separatrix. In the absence of a new high core radiation relevant confinement scaling, we propose an ad hoc correction to the loss power used in the ITER confinement scaling and the calculation of the stored energy by the radiation losses from the ‘core’ of the plasma . Using detailed ASTRA / TGLF simulations, we find that an appropriate definition of is given by 60% of all radiative losses inside a normalised minor radius . We consider this an improvement for current design predictions, but it is far from an ideal solution. We therefore encourage more detailed experimental and theoretical work on this issue. 20. Fuelling and density control for DEMO.

Abstract: Plasma fuelling and density control are an open issue regarding EU DEMO studies and solutions may be different from present day experiments. The present paper addresses through JINTRAC core transport code simulations the feasibility of different fuelling methods such as gas puff and pellet injection and the influence of neoclassical and anomalous inward pinch in the edge transport barrier in order to achieve and control the target DEMO density. Given the expected high fusion power production, He accumulation in the plasma core is a critical issue, and an estimation of the influence of impurities (He, Ar, and W) on core fuelling and plasma dilution is given together with a discussion on D–T core balance. The DEMO reference scenario investigated in this work is characterized by a peaked density profile, which requires a careful core fuelling. Due to the large pedestal temperature gradient, gas puff may not be a feasible option for core density control, unless assuming a large anomalous inward pinch in the edge transport barrier of more than ~2 m s−1. Pellet injection from the high field side of the torus, on the contrary, may represent a viable solution for core fuelling and D–T ratio control. The effect of pellet mass, speed, and injection geometry is also discussed in the present paper. Regardless, core fuelling efficiency with pellet injection is almost entirely determined by the presence of E × B drift. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
