Abstract: The ABCD3TA is a 128-channel ASIC with binary architecture for the readout of silicon strip particle detectors in the Semiconductor Tracker of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The chip comprises fast front-end and amplitude discriminator circuits using bipolar devices, a binary pipeline for first level trigger latency, a second level derandomising buffer and data compression circuitry based on CMOS devices. It has been designed and fabricated in a BiCMOS radiation resistant process. Extensive testing of the ABCD3TA chips assembled into detector modules show that the design meets the specifications and maintains the required performance after irradiation up to a total ionising dose of 10 Mrad and a 1-MeV neutron equivalent fluence of 2×10 14 n/cm2, corresponding to 10 years of operation of the LHC at its design luminosity. Wafer screening and quality assurance procedures have been developed and implemented in large volume production to ensure that the chips assembled into modules meet the rigorous acceptance criteria. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: A total of about View the MathML source decays have been analyzed to measure the View the MathML source mixing probability. Two different b tagging techniques have been used: events with two leptons and events with one lepton and one Λ. From a combination of the two methods the average mixing parameter, χ, was determined to be (12.1±1.6(stat.)±0.4(syst.)±0.4(model)%.

Abstract: The total and the differential cross sections for the reaction e+e− → γγ(γ) have been measured with the DELPHI detector at LEP using an integrated luminosity of 36.9 pb−1. The results agree with the QED predictions and consequently there is no evidence for non-standard channels with the same experimental signature. The lower limits obtained on the QED cutoff parameters are Λ+ > 143 GeV and Λ− > 120 GeV, and the lower bound on the mass of an excited electron with an effective coupling constant λγ = 1 is 132 GeV/c2. Upper limits on the branching ratios for the decays Z0 → γγ, Z0 → π0γ, Z0 → ηγ and Z0 → γγγ have been determined to be 5.5 × 10−5, 5.5 × 10−5, 8.0 × 10−5, and 1.7 × 10−5 respectively. All the limits are at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract: An analysis of the production of the Λ baryon in the hadronic decays of the Z0 is presented, based on about 993K multihadronic events collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP during 1991 and 1992. The differencial cross section of the Λ and the correlations between Λ and View the MathML source produced in the same event are compared to current models, based both on string fragmentation and on cluster decay. The predictions of the string fragmentation model are found to give satisfactory agreements with the data, clearly better than those of the cluster model.

Abstract: The challenges for the tracking detector systems at the LHC are unprecedented in terms of the number of channels, the required read-out speed and the expected radiation levels. The ATLAS Semiconductor Tracker (SCT) end-caps have a total of about 3 million electronics channels each reading out every 25 ns into its own on-chip 3.3 μ s buffer. The highest anticipated dose after 10 years operation is 1.4 × 1014 cm- 2 in units of 1 MeV neutron equivalent (assuming the damage factors scale with the non-ionising energy loss). The forward tracker has 1976 double-sided modules, mostly of area ∼ 70 cm2, each having 2 × 768 strips read out by six ASICs per side. The requirement to achieve an average perpendicular radiation length of 1.5% X0, while coping with up to 7 W dissipation per module (after irradiation), leads to stringent constraints on the thermal design. The additional requirement of 1500 e- equivalent noise charge (ENC) rising to only 1800 e- ENC after irradiation, provides stringent design constraints on both the high-density Cu/Polyimide flex read-out circuit and the ABCD3TA read-out ASICs. Finally, the accuracy of module assembly must not compromise the 16 μ m (r φ) resolution perpendicular to the strip directions or 580 μ m radial resolution coming from the 40 mrad front-back stereo angle. A total of 2210 modules were built to the tight tolerances and specifications required for the SCT. This was 234 more than the 1976 required and represents a yield of 93%. The component flow was at times tight, but the module production rate of 40-50 per week was maintained despite this. The distributed production was not found to be a major logistical problem and it allowed additional flexibility to take advantage of where the effort was available, including any spare capacity, for building the end-cap modules. The collaboration that produced the ATLAS SCT end-cap modules kept in close contact at all times so that the effects of shortages or stoppages at different sites could be rapidly resolved. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: The time dependent mixing of View the MathML source mesons has been observed by using the correlations between the charge of D∗ mesons and the weighted mean charge of particles in each hemisphere. From a reconstructed D∗± sample corresponding to about 1.7 million hadronic Z0 decays, the mass difference between the two Bd0 mass eigenstates has been measured to be View the MathML source or, converting into eV/c2: Δm = [3.29 ± 0.79 (stat) ± 0.39 (syst.)] 10−4 eV/c2.

Abstract: K0SK0S correlations have been studied in a sample of 717 511 hadronic events collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP during 1992. An enhancement is found in the production of pairs of K0S of similar momenta, as compared with a Monte Carlo simulated reference sample. The measured values for the strength of the correlation and the radius of the emitting source of kaons are λ = 1.13 ± 0.54 (stat) ± 0.23 (syst) and r = 0.90 ± 0.19 (stat) ± 0.10 (syst) fm. This enhancement is consistent with the hypothesis that K0SK0S pairs display an enhancement, regardless of whether they come from a K0K0 or from a K0K0 (K0K0) system.

Abstract: Seven unambiguous events out of a sample of 270 000 Z0 decays, contain in tile same jet a D(s) meson and a muon at large transverse momentum relative to the et axis. These events are direct evidence for B(s)0 meson production in hadronic Z0 decays. The production rate of these events, relative to all hadronic Z0 decays is ( 18 +/- 8) x 10(-5) this number including the relevant branching fractions of the B(s)0 and D(s). The value of the B(s)0 meson lifetime relative to the average B meson lifetime is measured to be 0.8 +/- 0.4.

10. A new photomultiplier tube utilising channel plate electron multipliers as the gain producing elements

Abstract: A survey of the properties of a new type of photomultiplier tube is presented. The device is a planar structure in which two cascaded channel plate electron multipliers (CPEM) produce charge gain factors of greater than 10 7 with a transit time of 1 ns. The single electron pulse rise time and transit time spread figures are 1 ns and 2.5 ns fwhm. The tube has shown its ability to operate satisfactorily in magnetic fields of 1 T without magnetic screening. Saturation of the tube occurs at a peak pulse current of 40 mA with plastic scintillator pulses. However the high plate impedances cause serious rate limitations with high output pulses.

Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a new photocathode for X-ray image intensifiers. The X-ray image intensifier is a device extensively used in scientific research, industry, and medicine. The detection process of an X-ray in a low density layer is rendered schematically. While accurate measurement of the spatial resolution response functions of an X-ray image intensifier at high spatial frequencies is a matter of some difficulty, it was felt that some indication of the likely spatial resolution of a low density X-ray cathode could be deduced from previously studies. Degradation of the spatial resolution can be expected to arise from two causes: the physical spread of the photoelectrons released by the X-ray in the layer and the lateral spread of the induced charged cloud as it drifts through the layer. The calculation of the limits to the spatial resolution set by the X-ray absorption processes is achieved with reasonable precision by referring to the work done by Bateman on xenon gas proportional counters.
