5. A Care Ethical Justification for an Interest Theory of Human Rights.

Abstract

Care ethics is often criticized for being incapable of outlining what responsibilities we have to persons beyond our personal relations, especially toward distant others. This criticism centres on care theorists' claim that the concerns of morality emerge between people, generated through our relations of interdependent care: it is difficult to see how moral duties can be applied to those with whom we do not forge a relationship. In this article, I respond to this criticism by outlining a care ethical justification for an interest theory of human rights. This theory will argue that the demands of global justice include various positive actions that aim toward ensuring the conditions for good caring relations to flourish, which in turn protect and promote the vital interests of all persons. In doing so, I aim to concurrently advance the sparse work on human rights within the care literature, systematizing the ideas of care theorists such as Daniel Engster, Virginia Held, and Fiona Robinson. Abstract

Care ethics is a feminist normative theory that emphasizes the moral significance of our relational interdependency in the provision and receipt of care. On this view, ethical action is situated and evaluated as it emerges through caring relations. However, an oft-cited criticism of care ethics is that its normative frontiers cannot be extended to the wider concerns of justice that lie beyond our relational limits. In this dissertation, I outline and defend an interpretation of care ethics that shows how the values of care identified within our personal relations can be abstracted to show that we do have certain obligations not only to our contemporaries (near and far) but also to non-contemporaries – namely, future generations. In doing so, I develop outlines for conceiving care ethics as a cosmopolitan theory of distributive justice via an interest theory of human rights, and as a sufficientarian theory of intergenerational justice.

Abstract

Background: Bleeding complications and blood product consumption have been a major concern during liver transplantation. Prevention of plasminogen activation and fibrinolysis by aprotinin administration has been shown to reduce perioperative bleeding during operations associated with high blood-product consumption. Patients and methods: Use of blood-products (packed red cells, frozen plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitate) was analyzed both during the three stages of orthotopic liver transplantation and during total hospitalization of the 26 patients transplanted without aprotinin and the subsequent 40 patients with aprotinin. A similar analysis was performed for 15 patients immediately before and after the introduction of aprotinin to eliminate the 'learning curve' effect for liver transplantation. The effect of [epsilon]-aminocaproic acid was analyzed as 13 patients received neither [epsilon]-aminocaproic acid nor aprotinin and 13 patients received [epsilon]-aminocaproic acid but not aprotinin. Results: There was a significant reduction in total hospital use of cryoprecipitate, frozen plasma, platelets, and red cells in the aprotinin-treated patients. This reduction was seen during the anhepatic and reperfusion stages of liver transplantation. There was no difference in blood product consumption between the groups who were or were not treated with [epsilon]-aminocaproic acid. Conclusion: Aprotinin significantly reduces the need for red cell, frozen plasma, platelet, and cryoprecipitate transfusion use during orthotopic liver transplantation, and appears to he more efficacious than [epsilon]-aminocaproic acid.

Abstract

An emblematic association exists between meat consumption and the gender identity hegemonic masculinity. This association is so strong that men who pursue meatless diets (especially vegans) are likely to be socially ostracized. Heganism is a diet/gender identity that aims to reconstruct hegemonic masculinity with the goal of removing these stigmas attached to male veganism. Yet heganism fails to do this, and, in fact, worsens the marginalization of male vegans. Therefore, heganism ought to be rejected. Instead, an alternative option for reducing the marginalization of male vegans could be found in the emergent literature on non-hegemonic masculinities. By rejecting hegemonic masculinity and publicizing the range of other masculine identities that exist, there is an opportunity for men to utilize their agency and interpret masculinity in their own way-especially with regards to dietary preference. In this way, focusing on non-hegemonic masculinities offers an encouraging avenue for reducing the social stigmas attached to male veganism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
