Machine learning (ML) is effective to establish the complicated trilateral relationship among structures, properties, and photovoltaic performance, which is fundamental issue in developing novel materials for improving power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, we constructed the database of 397 donor–acceptor pairs of OSCs with photovoltaic parameters and descriptor sets, which include donor–acceptor weight ratio within the active layer of the OSCs, root mean square of roughness, and 1024-bit Morgan molecular fingerprint for donor (Fp-D) and acceptor (Fp-A). The ML models random forest (RF), adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), extra trees regression, and gradient boosting regression trees were trained based on the descriptor set. The metrics determination coefficient (R2), Pearson correlation coefficient (r), root mean square error, and mean absolute error were selected to evaluate ML model performances. The results showed that the RF model exhibits the highest accuracy and stability for PCE prediction among these four ML models. Moreover, based on the decomposition of non-fullerene acceptors L8-BO, BTP-ec9, AQx-2, and IEICO, 20 acceptor molecules with symmetric A–D–A and A–π–D–π–A architectures were designed. The photovoltaic parameters of the designed acceptors were predicted using the trained RF model, and the virtual screening of designed acceptors was conducted based on the predicted PCE. The results indicate that six designed acceptors can reach the predicted PCE higher than 12% when P3HT was adopted as a donor. As we all know, momentum plays a crucial role in ball game. Based on the 2023 Wimbledon final data, this paper investigated momentum in tennis. Firstly, we initially trained a decision tree regression model on reprocessed data for prediction, and established the CBRF model based on CatBoost regression and random forest regression models to obtain prediction data. Secondly, significant non-zero autocorrelation coefficients were found, confirming the correlation between momentum and success. Thirdly, Based on these key factors, we proposed winning strategies for the players, conducted predictive analyses for six specific time intervals of the game. At last, by implementing these models to women's matches, championships, matches on different surfaces, the results demonstrated that the models have effective generalization ability. Aim Methods Results Conclusion Lung ultrasound (LU) and clinical parameters evaluated during the first postnatal hour potentially predict the length of CPAP therapy in newborns with respiratory distress.In a single‐centre, prospective observational pilot study, 130 newborns ≥36 weeks gestational age were assessed using standardised LU at 30 and 60 min postnatally. Various clinical parameters were evaluated influencing CPAP duration (<1 vs. ≥1 h) using univariate and multivariate analyses.Lung ultrasound score >5, FiO2 > 0.21 and respiratory acidosis 30 min postnatally were associated with CPAP ≥1 h. Our model showed good diagnostic quality (ROC AUC = 0.87) and was confirmed by classification and regression tree (CART) analysis. Additional LU findings like double lung point and pleural line abnormalities were frequently observed, with good interrater reliability for LU interpretation (ICC = 0.76–0.77).Newborns with postnatal respiratory distress at risk for prolonged CPAP therapy can be identified based on specific LU and clinical parameters assessed 30 min postnatally. Despite the need for validation in an independent sample, these findings may lay the groundwork for a prediction tool. The ordinary high water mark (OHWM) is a regulatory boundary essential to identifying the lateral jurisdictional limits of rivers and streams in the United States (U.S.). Bankfull is a scientific concept that has been defined and identified in a multitude of ways by scientists. Geomorphologist and hydrologist have long recognized that there can be variability in the identification of bankfull depending on how bankfull is defined. Furthermore, this variability is only increased by the inherent variability in stream characteristics that occurs along a reach of channel. Because of the overlap in the regulatory definition of OHWM and the scientific definitions of bankfull, one of the primary purposes of the study is to apply the definition of OHWM and compare it to bankfull in a variety of channel types in different climatic, hydrologic, and geologic settings. Our results show that there is a clear overlap between the identification of the OHWM and bankfull elevations. Regulatory practitioners are generally not specialized in fluvial geomorphology and yet are tasked with consistently and accurately identifying the OHWM in a variety of stream types throughout the U.S. Therefore, we also present how to apply a weight‐of‐evidence approach through a clear step‐by‐step process to potentially improve consistency and accuracy in identification of OHWM and bankfull by both scientists and non‐scientists. AbstractModel degrees of freedom ( df ) is a fundamental concept in statistics because it quantifies the flexibility of a fitting procedure and is indispensable in model selection. To investigate the gap between df and the number of independent variables in the fitting procedure, Tibshirani (2015) introduced the search degrees of freedom ( sdf ) concept to account for the search cost during model selection. However, this definition has two limitations: it does not consider fitting procedures in augmented spaces and does not use the same fitting procedure for sdf and df . We propose a modified search degrees of freedom ( msdf ) to directly account for the cost of searching in either original or augmented spaces. We check this definition for various fitting procedures, including classical linear regressions, spline methods, adaptive regressions (the best subset and the lasso), regression trees, and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). In many scenarios when sdf is applicable, msdf reduces to sdf . However, for certain procedures like the lasso, msdf offers a fresh perspective on search costs. For some complex procedures like MARS, the df has been pre-determined during model fitting, but the df of the final fitted procedure might differ from the pre-determined one. To investigate this discrepancy, we introduce the concepts of nominal df and actual df , and define the property of self-consistency, which occurs when there is no gap between these two df ’s. AbstractThe multinomial probit (MNP) (Imai and van Dyk, 2005) framework is based on a multivariate Gaussian latent structure, allowing for natural extensions to multilevel modeling. Unlike multinomial logistic models, MNP does not assume independent alternatives. Kindo et al. (2016) proposed multinomial probit BART (MPBART) to accommodate Bayesian additive regression trees (BART) formulation in MNP. The posterior sampling algorithms for MNP and MPBART are collapsed Gibbs samplers. Because the collapsing augmentation strategy yields a geometric rate of convergence no greater than that of a standard Gibbs sampling step, it is recommended whenever computationally feasible (Liu, 1994a; Imai and van Dyk, 2005). While this strategy necessitates simple sampling steps and a reasonably fast converging Markov chain, the complexity of the stochastic search for posterior trees may undermine its benefit. We address this problem by sampling posterior trees conditional on the constrained parameter space and compare our proposals to that of Kindo et al. (2016), who sample posterior trees based on an augmented parameter space. We also compare to the approach by Sparapani et al. (2021) that specified the multinomial model in terms of conditional probabilities. In terms of MCMC convergence and posterior predictive accuracy, our proposals are comparable to the conditional probability approach and outperform the augmented tree sampling approach. We also show that the theoretical mixing rates of our proposals are guaranteed to be no greater than the augmented tree sampling approach. The decision to perform amputation of a limb in a patient with diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is not an easy task. Prediction models aim to help the surgeon in decision making scenarios. Currently there are no prediction model to determine lower limb amputation during the first 30 days of hospitalization for patients with DFU. Classification And Regression Tree analysis was applied on data from a retrospective cohort of patients hospitalized for the management of diabetic foot ulcer, using an existing database from two Orthopaedics and Traumatology departments. The secondary analysis identified independent variables that can predict lower limb amputation (mayor or minor) during the first 30 days of hospitalization. Of the 573 patients in the database, 290 feet underwent a lower limb amputation during the first 30 days of hospitalization. Six different models were developed using a loss matrix to evaluate the error of not detecting false negatives. The selected tree produced 13 terminal nodes and after the pruning process, only one division remained in the optimal tree (Sensitivity: 69%, Specificity: 75%, Area Under the Curve: 0.76, Complexity Parameter: 0.01, Error: 0.85). Among the studied variables, the Wagner classification with a cut-off grade of 3 exceeded others in its predicting capacity. Wagner classification was the variable with the best capacity for predicting amputation within 30 days. Infectious state and vascular occlusion described indirectly by this classification reflects the importance of taking quick decisions in those patients with a higher compromise of these two conditions. Introduction: The incidence of thrombocytopenia in neonates receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) with and without concurrent continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and associated complications have not been well described. The primary aims of the current study were to (1) characterize thrombocytopenia in neonates receiving ECMO (including those treated concurrently with CRRT) and (2) evaluate risk factors (including CRRT utilization) associated with severe thrombocytopenia. In a planned exploratory secondary aim, we explored the association of severe thrombocytopenia with outcomes in neonates receiving ECMO. Methods: We conducted a retrospective single-center chart review of neonates who received ECMO 07/01/14–03/01/20 and evaluated associations between CRRT, severe thrombocytopenia (platelet count <50,000/mm3), and outcomes (ECMO duration, length of stay, and survival). Results: Fifty-two neonates received ECMO; 35 (67%) received concurrent CRRT. Severe thrombocytopenia occurred in 27 (52%) neonates overall and in 21 (60%) neonates who received concurrent CRRT. Underlying diagnosis, ECMO mode, care unit, and moderate/severe hemolysis differed between those who did and did not receive CRRT. CRRT receivers experienced shorter hospital stays than CRRT non-receivers, but ECMO duration, length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay, and survival did not differ between groups. CRRT receipt was associated with severe thrombocytopenia. Exploratory classification and regression tree (CART) analysis suggests CRRT use, birthweight, and ICU location are all predictors of interest for severe thrombocytopenia. Conclusions: In our cohort, CRRT use during ECMO was associated with severe thrombocytopenia, and patients who received ECMO with CRRT experienced shorter hospital stays than those who did not receive CRRT. PURPOSE: Systemic therapy with atezolizumab and bevacizumab can extend life for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, there is substantial variability in response to therapy and overall survival. Although current prognostic models have been validated in HCC, they primarily consider covariates that may be reflective of the severity of the underlying liver disease of patients with HCC. We developed and internally validated a classification and regression tree (CART) to identify patient characteristics associated with risks of early mortality, at or before 6 months from treatment initiation. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used the nationwide Flatiron Health electronic health record–derived deidentified database and included patients with a diagnosis of HCC after January 1, 2020, who received initial systemic therapy with atezolizumab and bevacizumab. CART was developed from available baseline clinical and demographic information to predict mortality within 6 months from treatment initiation. Model characteristics were compared to the albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) model and was further validated against a contemporary validation cohort of patients after a data update. RESULTS: A total of 293 patients were analyzed. The CART identified seven cohorts of patients from baseline demographic and laboratory characteristics. The model had an area under the receiver operating curve (AUROC) of 0.739 (95% CI, 0.683 to 0.794) for predicting 6-month mortality. This model was internally valid and performed more favorably than the ALBI model, which had an AUROC of 0.608 (95% CI, 0.557 to 0.660). The model applied to the contemporary validation cohort (n = 111) had an AUROC of 0.666 (95% CI, 0.506 to 0.826). CONCLUSION: Using CART, we identified unique cohorts of patients with HCC treated with atezolizumab and bevacizumab with distinct risks of early mortality. This approach outperformed the ALBI model and used clinical and laboratory characteristics that are readily available to oncologists caring for these patients. Aim: If the positive occupancy–abundance relationship prevails, locally abundant species are widely distributed. Although broadly supported, studies on lake fishes have thus far contributed little to this topic, especially at intermediate and small spatial scales. Here, the main objective was to investigate the relationship between occupancy and abundance of lake fish species within a large lake, as well as examine the relative importance of ecological niches, functional traits and phylogenetic relatedness in forming the relationship. Location: Poyang Lake, China. Taxon: Fishes. Methods: We calculated occupancy and mean abundance for 78 fish species and estimated niche position and niche breadth for each species based on a set of environmental variables. Additionally, we generated four functional trait vectors and one phylogenetic vector, describing trait similarity and phylogenetic relatedness, respectively. Linear models, hierarchical partitioning analyses and boosted regression trees were used in combination to explore the relative role of niche position, niche breadth, trait vectors and phylogenetic relatedness in determining fish occupancy, abundance and their relationship. Results: Occupancy and mean abundance of fish species in Poyang Lake showed a significantly positive and rather strong interspecific relationship. Interspecific variations in fish occupancy and abundance were well accounted for by niche position, followed by niche breadth. Nonetheless, trait vectors and phylogenetic relatedness were of minor importance in affecting fish occupancy and abundance. Additionally, occupancy was better explained than abundance by the predictor variables used, which was shown by both linear models and boosted regression trees. Main Conclusions: This study suggests that the positive correlation between occupancy and abundance also occurs in lake fish species. Furthermore, ecological niche features, especially niche position, were more important than functional traits and phylogenetic relatedness in accounting for occupancy and abundance of fish species in Poyang Lake. Engineering applications including pervious concrete require effective packing of aggregates to optimize strength. Size and shape distribution of aggregates significantly affect the performance. Computational methods numerically represent shape of aggregates, from image analysis, the effectiveness of has not been compared and verified. This study aims to analyse the representability of shape aspects of aggregates by different computational methods. Crushed aggregates were grouped into 5 clusters, and each group was milled in a Los Angeles machine for different degrees (0–2000) to induce morphological changes on the aggregates. Aggregates ranging from 5 to 30mm in diameter were obtained (7191 in total). imageJTM, was used to compute dimensions and shape factors of aggregates from 14 computational methods. Statistical tests, Pearson's Correlations and Principal Components Analysis and machine learning classification tools, Decision-tree, Random-Forest, Naïve-Bayes, Support-Vector-Machines, K-Nearest-Neighbours and Perceptron were employed to assess. In conclusion, no shape factor could be singularly used to numerically represent the morphological changes on aggregate particles but a combination of shape factors is required. Data matrix had three primary dimensions. Combination of Circularity, Kumbrein-Solidity and Barksdale-Shape-Factor yield best representation of aggregate shape. Wastewater containing a mixture of heavy metals, a byproduct of chemical, petrochemical, and refinery activities driven by urbanization and industrial expansion, poses significant environmental threats. Analyzing such wastewater through adsorbate-adsorbent experiments yields extensive datasets. However, traditional methodologies like the Box–Behnken design (BBD) within the response surface methodology (RSM) struggle with managing large datasets and capturing the complex, nonlinear relationships inherent in such experimental data. To address these challenges, ML techniques have emerged as promising tools for accurately predicting the removal percentage of heavy metals from wastewater. In this study, we utilized tree-based regression models—specifically decision tree regression (DTR), random forest regression (RFR), and extra tree regression (ETR)—to forecast the efficiency of gooseberry seed powder in removing chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. Additionally, we employed an ML-based Nelder–Mead optimization approach to identify the optimal values for key features (initial Cr(VI) concentration, pH, and Indian gooseberry powder dosage) which maximized the Cr(VI) removal percentage. Our experimental results reveal that the ETR model achieved an impressive R 2 score of 0.99, demonstrating a low error rate in predicting the Cr(VI) removal percentage. Furthermore, we used DTR-Nelder–Mead, RFR-Nelder–Mead, and ETR-Nelder–Mead optimization approaches on a synthesized dataset of 2000 instances while varying the initial Cr(VI) concentration, pH, and Indian gooseberry powder dosage. The analysis determined that the DTR-Nelder–Mead and RFR-Nelder–Mead approaches yielded the highest Cr(VI) removal percentages of 78.21% and 78.107% at an initial concentration of 95.55 mg/L, respectively, a pH level of four, and an adsorbent dosage of 8 g/L of gooseberry seed powder. Furthermore, the ETR-Nelder–Mead approach obtained the maximum Cr(VI) removal percentage of 85.11% at an initial concentration of 99.25 mg/L, a pH level of 4.97, and an adsorbent dosage of 9.62 g/L of gooseberry seed powder. These results reported an increase in the Cr(VI) removal percentage ranging from 4.66% to 11.56% more than the Cr(VI) removal percentage obtained by experimentation. These findings underscore the efficacy of tree-based regression models and ML-based Nelder–Mead optimization in elucidating chromium removal processes from wastewater, offering valuable insights into effective treatment strategies. The complicated trilateral relationships among molecular structures, properties, and photovoltaic performances of electron donor and acceptor materials hinder the rapid improvement of power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, the database of 310 donor and non‐fullerene acceptor pairs is constructed and 39 molecular structure descriptors are selected. Four kinds of machine learning (ML) algorithms random forest (RF), extra trees regression, gradient boosting regression trees, and adaptive boosting are applied to predict photovoltaic parameters. The coefficient of determination, Pearson correlation coefficient, mean absolute error, and root mean square error are adopted to evaluate ML performance. The results show that the RF model exhibits the best prediction accuracy. The Gini important analysis suggests the fused ring and aromatic heterocycles are critical fragments in determining PCE. The molecular unit sets are constructed by cutting each donor and acceptor molecules in database. The 31 752 D‐π‐A‐π type donor molecules and 5 455 164 A‐π‐D‐π‐A type acceptor molecules are designed by recombination of molecular units, and 173 212 367 328 donor–acceptor pairs are generated by combining the newly designed donor and acceptor molecules. Coffee, an important global commodity, is threatened by climate change. Agroforestry has been considered as one option to maintain or enhance coffee production. In this study, we use a machine learning ensemble consisting of MaxEnt, Random Forest and Boosted Regression Trees to assess climate change impacts on the suitability to grow Arabica coffee, Robusta coffee and bananas in Uganda by 2050. Based on this, the buffering potential of Cordia africana and Ficus natalensis, the two commonly used shading trees in agroforestry systems is assessed. Our robust models (AUC of 0.7–0.9) indicate temperature-related variables as relevant for Arabica coffee suitability, while precipitation-related variables determine Robusta coffee and banana suitability. Under current climatic conditions, only a quarter of the total land area is suitable for growing Arabica coffee, while over three-quarters are suitable for Robusta coffee and bananas. Our results suggest that climate change will reduce the area suitable to grow Arabica coffee, Robusta coffee and bananas by 20%, 9% and 3.5%, respectively, under SSP3-RCP7.0 by 2050. A shift in areas suitable for Arabica coffee to highlands might occur, leading to potential encroachment on protected areas. In our model, implementing agroforestry with up to 50% shading could partially offset suitable area losses for Robusta coffee—but not for Arabica coffee. The potential to produce valuable Arabica coffee thus decreases under climate change and cannot be averted by agroforestry. The paper emphasizes the importance of understanding the factors that affect house prices, such as quality, location, size, and building materials. It was concluded that these factors have a strong correlation with house price prediction. The information available on krisha.kz was found to be a useful resource for finding good apartments. Censoring occurs when an outcome is unobserved beyond some threshold value. Methods that do not account for censoring produce biased predictions of the unobserved outcome. This paper introduces Type I Tobit Bayesian Additive Regression Tree (TOBART-1) models for censored outcomes. Simulation results and real data applications demonstrate that TOBART-1 produces accurate predictions of censored outcomes. TOBART-1 provides posterior intervals for the conditional expectation and other quantities of interest. The error term distribution can have a large impact on the expectation of the censored outcome. AbstractThis study aimed to investigate the factors contributing to suicide-related risks among college students during a stressful life event, specifically the COVID-19 pandemic. Employing a Classification and Regression Tree (CART) model, data from 808 college students were analyzed, revealing key interactions and predictive insights into suicide-related risk. Results indicated that preexisting depression emerged as the most significant risk factor, followed by anxiety, discrimination, stress, and younger age. These findings emphasize the importance of preventive measures targeting depression and anxiety to enhance college students’ mental health and well-being. Functional data analysis is typically performed in two steps: first, functionally representing discrete observations, and then applying functional methods to the so-represented data. The initial choice of a functional representation may have a significant impact on the second phase of the analysis, as shown in recent research, where data-driven spline bases outperformed the predefined rigid choice of functional representation. The method chooses an initial functional basis by an efficient placement of the knots using a simple machine-learning algorithm. The knot selection approach does not apply directly when the data are defined on domains of a higher dimension than one such as, for example, images. The reason is that in higher dimensions the convenient and numerically efficient spline spaces use tensor bases that require knots located on a lattice. This fundamentally limits flexible knot placement which is fundamental for the approach. The goal of this research is two-fold: first, to propose modified approaches that circumvent the issue by coding the irregular knot selection into the topology of the spaces of tensor-based splines; second, to apply the approach to a classification problem workflow for functional data that utilizes knot selection. Introduction: Identifying clinical factors that increase the risk of mortality in COVID-19 patients is crucial. This enables targeted screening, optimizing treatment, and prevention of severe complications, ultimately reducing death rates. This study aimed to develop prediction models for the death of patients (i.e., survival or death) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Shiraz, exploring the main influencing factors. Method: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using hospital-based records of 1030 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19, who were hospitalized for treatment between March 21, 2021, and March 21, 2022, in Shiraz, Iran. Variables related to the final outcome were selected based on criteria and univariate logistic regression. Hierarchical multiple logistic regression and classification and regression tree (CART) models were utilized to explore the relationships between potential influencing factors and the final outcome. Additionally, methods were employed to identify the high-risk population for increased mortality rates during COVID-19. Finally, accuracy was evaluated the performance of the models, with the area under the receiver operator characteristic curve(AUC), sensitivity, and specificity metrics. Results: In this study, 558 (54.2%) individuals infected with COVID-19 died. The final model showed that the type of medicine antiviral (OR: 11.10, p = 0.038) than reference (antiviral and corticosteroid), and discharge oxygen saturation(O2) (OR: 1.10, p < 0.001) had a positive association with the chance of survival, but other variables were not considered as predictive variables. Predictive models for the final outcome(death) achieved accuracies ranging from 81 to 87% for hierarchical multiple logistic regression and from 87 to 94% for the CART model. Therefore, the CART model performed better than the hirerical multiple logistic regression model. Conclusion: These findings firstly elucidate the incidence and associated factors of the outcome (death) among patients in Shiraz, Iran. The interactions of environmental, geographic, socio-demographic, and epidemiological factors in shaping mosquito-borne disease transmission dynamics are complex and changeable, influencing the abundance and distribution of vectors and the pathogens they transmit. In this study, 27 years of cross-sectional malaria survey data (1990–2017) were used to examine the effects of these factors on Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax malaria presence at the community level in Africa and Asia. Monthly long-term, open-source data for each factor were compiled and analyzed using generalized linear models and classification and regression trees. Both temperature and precipitation exhibited unimodal relationships with malaria, with a positive effect up to a point after which a negative effect was observed as temperature and precipitation increased. Overall decline in malaria from 2000 to 2012 was well captured by the models, as was the resurgence after that. The models also indicated higher malaria in regions with lower economic and development indicators. Malaria is driven by a combination of environmental, geographic, socioeconomic, and epidemiological factors, and in this study, we demonstrated two approaches to capturing this complexity of drivers within models. Identifying these key drivers, and describing their associations with malaria, provides key information to inform planning and prevention strategies and interventions to reduce malaria burden. Within the Hadoop ecosystem, MapReduce stands as a cornerstone for managing, processing, and mining large-scale datasets. Yet, the absence of efficient solutions for precise estimation of job execution times poses a persistent challenge, impacting task allocation and distribution within Hadoop clusters. In this study, we present a comprehensive machine learning approach for predicting the execution time of MapReduce jobs, encompassing data collection, preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation. Leveraging a rich dataset derived from comprehensive Hadoop MapReduce job traces, we explore the intricate relationship between cluster parameters and job performance. Through a comparative analysis of machine learning models, including linear regression, decision tree, random forest, and gradient-boosted regression trees, we identify the random forest model as the most effective, demonstrating superior predictive accuracy and robustness. Our findings underscore the critical role of features such as data size and resource allocation in determining job performance. As a public service, municipal waste management at the local and regional levels should be carried out in an environmentally friendly and economically justified manner. Information on the quantity and composition of generated municipal waste is essential for planning activities related to the implementation and optimization of the process. There is a need for reliable forecasts regarding the amount of waste generated in each area. Due to the variability in the waste accumulation rate, this task is difficult to accomplish, especially at the local level. The literature contains many reports on this issue, but there is a lack of studies indicating the preferred method depending on the independent variables, the complexity of the algorithm, the time of implementation, and the quality of the forecast. The results concerning the quality of forecasting methods are difficult to compare due to the use of different sets of independent variables, forecast horizons, and quality assessment indicators. This paper compares the effectiveness of selected forecasting models in predicting the amount of municipal waste collection generated in Polish municipalities. The authors compared nine methods, including artificial neural networks (ANNs), support regression trees (SRTs), rough set theory (RST), multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), and random regression forests (RRFs). The analysis was based on 31 socioeconomic indicators for 2451 municipalities in Poland. The Boruta algorithm was used to select significant variables and eliminate those with little impact on forecasting. The quality of the forecasts was evaluated using eight indicators, such as the absolute percentage error (MAPE), mean absolute error (MAE), and coefficient of determination (R2). A comprehensive evaluation of the forecasting models was carried out using the APEKS method. An analysis of the results showed that the best forecasting methods depended on the set of independent variables and the evaluation criteria adopted. Waste management expenditures, the levels of sanitation and housing infrastructure, and the cost-effectiveness of waste management services were key factors influencing the amount of municipal waste. Additionally, this research indicated that adding more variables does not always improve the quality of forecasts, highlighting the importance of proper selection. The use of a variable selection algorithm, combined with the consideration of the impact of various socioeconomic factors on municipal waste generation, can significantly improve the quality of forecasts. Purpose: This study addresses the lack of objective player-based metrics in men’s rugby league by introducing a comprehensive set of novel performance metrics designed to quantify a player’s overall contribution to team success. Methods: Player match performance data were captured by Stats Perform for every National Rugby League season from 2018 until 2022; a total of five seasons. The dataset was divided into offensive and defensive variables and further split according to player position. Five machine learning algorithms (Principal Component Regression, Lasso Regression, Random Forest, Regression Tree, and Extreme Gradient Boost) were considered in the analysis, which ultimately generated Wins Created and Losses Created for offensive and defensive performance, respectively. These two metrics were combined to create a final metric of Net Wins Added. The validity of these player performance metrics against traditional objective and subjective measures of performance in rugby league were evaluated. Results: The metrics correctly predicted the winner of 80.9% of matches, as well as predicting the number of team wins per season with an RMSE of 1.9. The metrics displayed moderate agreement (Gwet AC1 = 0.505) when predicting team of the year award recipients. When predicting State of Origin selection, the metrics displayed moderate agreement for New South Wales (0.450) and substantial agreement for Queensland (0.652). Site-specific weather forecasts are essential for accurate prediction of power demand and are consequently of great interest to energy operators. However, weather forecasts from current numerical weather prediction (NWP) models lack the fine-scale detail to capture all important characteristics of localised real-world sites. Instead, they provide weather information representing a rectangular gridbox (usually kilometres in size). Even after post-processing and bias correction, area-averaged information is usually not optimal for specific sites. Prior work on site-optimised forecasts has focused on linear methods, weighted consensus averaging, and time-series methods, among others. Recent developments in machine learning (ML) have prompted increasing interest in applying ML as a novel approach towards this problem. In this study, we investigate the feasibility of optimising forecasts at sites by adopting the popular machine learning model "gradient boosted decision tree", supported by the XGBoost package (v.1.7.3) in the Python language. Regression trees have been trained with historical NWP and site observations as training data, aimed at predicting temperature and dew point at multiple site locations across Australia. We developed a working ML framework, named "Multi-SiteBoost", and initial test results show a significant improvement compared with gridded values from bias-corrected NWP models. The improvement from XGBoost (0.1–0.6 °C, 4–27% improvement in temperature) is found to be comparable with non-ML methods reported in the literature. With the insights provided by SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP), this study also tests various approaches to understand the ML predictions and increase the reliability of the forecasts generated by ML. Introduction: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is the most common cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Fidaxomicin and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) are effective, but expensive therapies to treat recurrent CDI (reCDI). Our objective was to develop a prediction model for reCDI based on the gut microbiota composition and clinical characteristics, to identify patients who could benefit from early treatment with fidaxomicin or FMT. Methods: Multicentre, prospective, observational study in adult patients diagnosed with a primary episode of CDI. Fecal samples and clinical data were collected prior to, and after 5 days of CDI treatment. Follow-up duration was 8 weeks. Microbiota composition was analysed by IS-pro, a bacterial profiling technique based on phylum- and species-specific differences in the 16–23 S interspace regions of ribosomal DNA. Bayesian additive regression trees (BART) and adaptive group-regularized logistic ridge regression (AGRR) were used to construct prediction models for reCDI. Results: 209 patients were included, of which 25% developed reCDI. Variables related to microbiota composition provided better prediction of reCDI and were preferentially selected over clinical factors in joint prediction models. Bacteroidetes abundance and diversity after start of CDI treatment, and the increase in Proteobacteria diversity relative to baseline, were the most robust predictors of reCDI. The sensitivity and specificity of a BART model including these factors were 95% and 78%, but these dropped to 67% and 62% in out-of-sample prediction. Conclusion: Early microbiota response to CDI treatment is a better predictor of reCDI than clinical prognostic factors, but not yet sufficient enough to predict reCDI in daily practice. Spatial distributions of mobulid rays remain poorly known. Prior studies found commonalities between favourable environments and prey among various mobulid species, yet most were conducted in tropical waters. To explore the habitat use and distribution of mobulid rays in a temperate environment we model the habitat suitability of two mobulid rays (Mobula mobular and Mobula birostris) in Aotearoa New Zealand using fisheries and citizen science occurrence data spanning almost two decades.Northeastern coast of Aotearoa, New Zealand.Boosted Regression Tree models were used to predict the annual habitat suitability and favourable environmental conditions of the two species based on available sightings records in conjunction with high resolution (1 km2) environmental data.The sympatric study species had contrasting habitat requirements. We found a separation in their spatial distribution defined by the 200 m isobath – the onshore extent for M. birostris and the offshore extent for M. mobular. While there were only subtle variations in relative habitat suitability for M. mobular over the study period, M. birostris exhibited greater interannual variability. Despite differing interannual patterns, spatial separation, as a function of environmental properties, persisted regardless of the year.Our results suggest that associations between mobulid species may differ from tropical regions due to regional adaptations to prey availability or local environmental conditions unique to colder and more productive temperate waters. Our findings highlight the importance of multi‐species surveys and the inclusion of temporal variability in support of separate species‐specific management plans to account for differing stressors impacting each species. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors have been used to delay the dementia progression in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). In 2017, a structure-based virtual screening (SBVS) protocol was made publicly available and successfully employed to discover chalcone derivatives and short peptides as AChE inhibitors. During the upgrading process of the SBVS protocol, an optimized version of the enhanced directory of useful decoys (DUDE) was released. This optimized DUDE was named DUDE-Z. In this article, the re-optimization of the upgraded SBVS protocol is presented. The optimization process made use of a machine learning package and library called recursive partitioning and regression tree (RPART) in R statistical computing software environment. The optimized SBVS protocol has the F-measure value of 0.322 against the DUDE-Z. The protocol was subsequently analyzed to efficiently screen on a newly released open-accessed natural products database LOTUS (https://lotus.naturalproducts.net/) to discover bioactive natural products as AChE inhibitors. The SBVS campaigns on 276,518 natural products identified 867 compounds as virtual hits, thirty-seven of which were identified as compounds found in the species from Kingdom Plantae. The problems of asymmetry in information features and redundant features in datasets, and the asymmetry of network traffic distribution in the field of network intrusion detection, have been identified as a cause of low accuracy and poor generalization of traditional machine learning detection methods in intrusion detection systems (IDSs). In response, a network intrusion detection method based on the integration of bootstrap aggregating (bagging) is proposed. The extreme random tree (ERT) algorithm was employed to calculate the weights of each feature, determine the feature subsets of different machine learning models, then randomly sample the training samples based on the bootstrap sampling method, and integrated classification and regression trees (CART), support vector machine (SVM), and k-nearest neighbor (KNN) as the base estimators of bagging. A comparison of integration methods revealed that the KNN-Bagging integration model exhibited optimal performance. Subsequently, the Bayesian optimization (BO) algorithm was employed for hyper-parameter tuning of the base estimators' KNN. Finally, the base estimators were integrated through a hard voting approach. The proposed BO-KNN-Bagging model was evaluated on the NSL-KDD dataset, achieving an accuracy of 82.48%. We train random and boosted forests, two machine learning architectures based on regression trees, to emulate a physics‐based parameterization of atmospheric gravity wave momentum transport. We compare the forests to a neural network benchmark, evaluating both offline errors and online performance when coupled to an atmospheric model under the present day climate and in 800 and 1,200 ppm CO2 global warming scenarios. Offline, the boosted forest exhibits similar skill to the neural network, while the random forest scores significantly lower. Both forest models couple stably to the atmospheric model, and control climate integrations with the boosted forest exhibit lower biases than those with the neural network. Integrations with all three data‐driven emulators successfully capture the Quasi‐Biennial Oscillation (QBO) and sudden stratospheric warmings, key modes of stratospheric variability, with the boosted forest more accurate than the random forest in replicating their statistics across our range of carbon dioxide perturbations. The boosted forest and neural network capture the sign of the QBO period response to increased CO2, though both struggle with the magnitude of this response under the more extreme 1,200 ppm scenario. To investigate the connection between performance in the control climate and the ability to generalize, we use techniques from interpretable machine learning to understand how the data‐driven methods use physical information. We leverage this understanding to develop a retraining procedure that improves the coupled performance of the boosted forest in the control climate and under the 800 ppm CO2 scenario. Plain Language Summary: Parameterizations are reduced‐complexity models that estimate the effects of physical processes smaller than what can be resolved by the grid of a weather or climate model. While necessary for realistic simulations, they are a source of uncertainty in climate projections. Recently, machine learning has been used to augment or replace conventional parameterizations of atmospheric gravity waves, a type of motion by which disturbances near the Earth's surface can affect the wind higher up. We compare several machine learning approaches to the gravity wave parameterization problem. In particular, we test neural networks against random and boosted forests, which are built around flowchart‐like models called regression trees. We find that boosted forests, though not widely used for climate model parameterization, are especially successful, scoring as well as or better than neural networks on various performance metrics. We then provide proof‐of‐concept of a novel method to retrain the boosted forest so that it uses its input data more in line with the physics of the system, and show that this technique improves the forest's behavior when used together with an atmospheric model. Introduction: Several quantitative methods have been established, in pharmacovigilance, to detect signals of disproportionate reporting (SDRs) from databases containing reports of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). The signal detection algorithms (SDAs) and the source of the reporting per product vary, but it is unclear whether any algorithm can provide satisfactory performance using data with such large variance factors. Objective: Determine the appropriate SDA for Biogen's internal Global Safety Database (GSD) given the characteristics of the database including frequencies of events, data skewness, outliers, and missing information. Compare performance of standard approaches (EBGM, EB05, PRR, and ROR), well accepted by industry, to a Biogen-developed Machine Learning (ML) Regression Decision Tree (RDT) model, across several Biogen products, to determine a champion SDA. Methods: All data associated with seven marketed Biogen products were chosen and a historical subset of reported ADRs were considered. Six SDAs (five common industry disproportionality methods) and RDT were evaluated. The SDRs were calculated on training and test data composed of quarterly reporting intervals from 2004–2019. The performance measures used were sensitivity, precision, time to detect new events, and frequency of detected cases for each algorithm for each product. Outcomes in the test data are known a priori and easily compared to predicted outcomes. Validation was performed via rates of misclassification. This work solely represents Biogen's internal information, intentionally chosen to serve the performance review of its signal detection systems, and results will not necessarily be generalizable to other external sources. Results: Several algorithms performed differently among products, but no one method dominated any other. Performance was dependent on the thresholds used to define a signal according to different criteria. However, those different statistics subtly influenced the achievable performance. The relative performance of RDT and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) algorithms were superior and paired across products. A reduction in precision for all methods spanning the products was present. Hence, companies evaluating signal detection approaches, search for innovative methods to minimize this effect. Conclusions: In designing signal detection systems, careful consideration should be given to the criteria that are used to define SDRs. The choice of disproportionality statistics does not affect the achievable range of signal detection performance. These choices should consider mainly ease of implementation and interpretation. The implementation of a method is specific to its accuracy. The RDT attempted to take advantage of known methods and compare results on a per-product basis. Many factors influencing ADRs may improve RDT in future efforts. In this experiment, RDT demonstrated superiority in terms of quickest time to detect and capturing of the highest number of ADRs. Next steps include expansion of data for products representing other indications and testing models in external databases to investigate generalizability of estimates when comparing SDAs. Effective verification of soil organic carbon (SOC) improvement interventions through soil carbon sequestration (SCS) requires robust methodologies to measure, report, and verify changes in soil carbon (C) levels. Furthermore, soil C must be monitored over time to ensure that sequestered C is not being re-emitted, thus ensuring the permanence of C removals. The traditional methods for soil C measurement are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and energy-intensive, increasing analysis costs. In this article, we verify the use of a commercially available laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy analyzer, the LaserAg-Quantum, coupled with the recursive feature addition, the gradient-boosted decision trees regression model, and the novelty detection model to predict C in soils. The developed method shows promising performance with an average limit of quantification of 0.75% of C and a precision of 4.10%. Accuracy metrics, including R2, mean absolute error, and root mean square error, yielded values of 0.81, 0.27%, and 0.37% for the validation dataset. Additionally, around 10% of validation samples after the novelty detection model exhibited relative error greater than 30%. Local morphometric variables (LMVs) are frequently found as weaker predictors than other environmental covariates in digital soil mapping. This study tested and evaluated the performance of a hybrid approach combining gradient boosted regression trees (GBRT) and regularized regression (RR) algorithms in predicting soil textural fractions using a set of LMVs in Khuzestan province, Iran. Here five LMVs (slope gradient, slope aspect, horizontal curvature, vertical curvature, and contour geodesic torsion) were derived from a spheroidal equal-angular DEM as original predictors. The results demonstrated that the hybrid approach improved prediction accuracy for sand, clay, and silt contents by an average of 56% compared to the GBRT models. The importance analysis revealed the significant contribution of tree-based variables obtained from decomposing GBRT models in predicting soil textural fractions. This approach could be recommended for digital soil mapping, particularly in situations of limited environmental covariates or geomorphometric techniques that cannot be easily applied. The present study aims to examine land use land cover (LULC) changes of three decades from 1991 to 2021 and predict the future LULC change in Binh Duong province, Vietnam to explore a future research direction on land use change and associated challenges in the study region. Multi-spectral remote sensing data and random forest tree (RFT) were utilized to generate LULC maps. Areal statistics and annual change rate were considered to analyze the categorical land use change detection. Statistical measures such as user's accuracy, producer's accuracy, kappa coefficient, and confusion matrix were employed to assess the accuracy of LULC classification. To predict future LULC and simulate the spatio-temporal change, we considered previous year LULC maps, independent spatial variables and a combined artificial neural network (ANN) multi-layer perceptron approach. The analysis revealed that there was a huge transition from agricultural lands to residential land with industry and commerce which resulting an expansion of impervious lands and a rapid decline of agricultural land as well as of scrub land and barren lands, and a changeability of forest and plantation, croplands, and waterbodies. This article aims to calculate the COVID-19 Pandemic Vulnerability Index (COVID-19-PVI) across Brazilian municipalities, positing that vulnerability to the coronavirus is linked to socioeconomic disparities in this continental-sized country. From data collection on epidemiological, socioeconomic, demographic, and public health systems, it was possible to rank which features were most influential in the spread of COVID-19 using the artificial intelligence implicit in the boosting tree regression method. To ensure the robustness of the findings, this index is tested in Pearson correlations leading to conclusions about which regions were most vulnerable to the pandemic and its consequences, the importance of the spatial distribution of General Hospitals during the COVID-19 outbreak, and the influence of population density on the advancement of the coronavirus in the country. Rainfall partitioning by the vegetation canopy into stemflow (SF) and throughfall (TF) plays a crucial role in soil infiltration and the local water balance. This study aims to quantify the differences in SF and TF between two sand‐binding shrubs, Caragana liouana and Salix psammophila, in the desert steppe, clarify the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on them using the boosted regression trees (BRT) model, and compare soil moisture replenishment during the growing seasons of 2021 and 2022. Under identical rainfall conditions, the canopies of C. liouana and S. psammophila can lead to differences in rainfall partitioning. The SF percentage ranged from 0 to 23.70% for C. liouana and from 0% to 3.3% for S. psammophila, respectively, while the TF percentage ranged from 42.12% to 90.07% for C. liouana and from 52.39% to 94.87% for S. psammophila. The funnelling ratio for C. liouana (69.59) is 1.19 times higher than for S. psammophila (58.36). Rainfall amount is the primary variable affecting rainfall partitioning. The average soil moisture replenishment and soil moisture conversion efficiency under the C. liouana canopy are 11.02 mm and 58.39%, respectively, which are significantly higher than those for S. psammophila (4.84 mm and 24.33%, respectively). These findings suggest that C. liouana, with its relatively higher SF and soil moisture conversion capability compared to S. psammophila, plays a significant ecohydrological role in water‐limited ecosystems. Understanding the determinants of the availability and spatial fairness of street greenery is crucial for improving urban green spaces and addressing green justice concerns. While previous studies have mainly examined factors influencing street greenery from an aerial perspective, there has been limited investigation into determinants at eye level, which more closely aligns with people's actual encounters with green spaces. To address this, the Green View Index (GVI) and Gini coefficient were used to assess the availability and spatial fairness of street greenery from a pedestrian's perspective, using Baidu Street View (BSV) images across 49 subdistricts in Changchun City, China. A dataset of 33,786 BSV images from 1877 sites was compiled. Additionally, 21 explanatory factors were collected and divided into three groups: socioeconomic, biogeographic, and landscape patterns. The Boosted Regression Tree (BRT) method was employed to assess the relative influence and marginal effects of these factors on street greenery's availability and spatial fairness. The results showed that street greenery's availability and spatial fairness are predominantly influenced by landscape patterns. Specifically, the percentage of landscape and edge density emerged as the most significant factors, exhibiting a threshold effect on the availability and fairness of street greenery. Increasing the proportion and complexity of urban green spaces can efficiently enhance the availability and spatial fairness of street greenery. Acoustic impedance is the product of the density of a material and the speed at which an acoustic wave travels through it. Understanding this relationship is essential because low acoustic impedance values are closely associated with high porosity, facilitating the accumulation of more hydrocarbons. In this study, we estimate the acoustic impedance based on nine different inputs of seismic attributes in addition to depth and two-way travel time using three supervised machine learning models, namely extra tree regression (ETR), random forest regression, and a multilayer perceptron regression algorithm using the scikit-learn library. Our results show that the R2 of multilayer perceptron regression is 0.85, which is close to what has been reported in recent studies. However, the ETR method outperformed those reported in the literature in terms of the mean absolute error, mean squared error, and root-mean-squared error. Education is essential and increasingly crucial for the development of almost all countries worldwide. As educational data has become increasingly available, scholars have shown a growing interest in exploring the correlation between students’ academic achievements and other factors that may impact their performance using machine learning algorithms. This research paper introduces a novel hybrid classifier that aims to predict the academic performance of students by using a combination of different single algorithms. The proposed hybrid classifier (PHC) is compared to six available classification algorithms (random forest (RF), C4.5, classification and regression trees (CART), support vector machines (SVM), naive Bayes (NB) and K-nearest neighbors (KNN)) using recall, precision, F1-score, and accuracy evaluation measures. Our experimental results reveal that the PHC classifier consistently outperforms the individual classifiers across multiple evaluation metrics. Specifically, the PHC classifier achieved an accuracy rate of 92.40%, surpassing the RF, C4.5, and CART classifiers, which were the next best performers. In terms of precision and F1 score, the PHC also demonstrated superior performance, indicating its robustness in correctly identifying positive instances and providing balanced accuracy. While the C4.5 classifier performed comparably to the PHC classifier concerning the recall metric, the hybrid model’s overall performance highlights its effectiveness in leveraging the complementary strengths of the included classifiers. The suggested hybrid model has the potential to enhance students’ academic performance and success more effectively and efficiently. It could benefit students, educators, and academic institutions. Currently, the Cloud Computing (CC) and Internet of Things (IoT) have emerged as advanced technologies that enable new levels of connection and data processing. As the IoT ecosystem grows, it becomes more important to ensure the security and integrity of IoT devices and the data they create in cloud. The identification and prevention of intrusions in both cloud and IoT cloud systems has become a major challenge. In this research work, a new intrusion detection framework based on Extra Tree Regression Classifier and Grid Search Optimized Long ShortTerm Memory (ETR-GSO-LSTM) is used to identify and classify intrusions in IoT and Cloud environments. The input data is first gathered via the CIC-IDS-2018 and KDD-Dataset, which include a lot of information about network traffic and possible security issues. The data preprocessing tasks such as label encoding and data augmentation was performed to perform more amount of labelled data for analysis. Another crucial phase in the intrusion detection process is feature selection, and the ETR Classifier has shown to be a significant tool in determining the most relevant characteristics from the dataset. These chosen features assist in reducing dimensionality and improving the accuracy of the intrusion detection model. Finally, GSO-LSTM appears as a potential strategy for classification, which employs the capacity of LSTM networks to examine sequential data and find abnormalities in real time. The proposed ETR-GSO-LSTM achieves detection or classification accuracy of 99.95% and 99.9% on the CIC-IDS 2018 and NSL-KDD datasets, respectively. From the result analysis, it clearly shows that the proposed ETR-GSO-LSTM obtains better performance in all the metrices when compared to Enhanced Long-Short Term Memory with Recurrent Neural Network (ELSTM-RNN) and Unsupervised Technique Ensemble based IDS (UTENIDS). The proliferation of data collection technologies often results in large data sets with many observations and many variables. In practice, highly relevant engineered features are often groups of predictors that share a common regression coefficient (i.e., the predictors in the group affect the response only via their collective sum), where the groups are unknown in advance and must be discovered from the data. We propose an algorithm called coefficient tree regression (CTR) to discover the group structure and fit the resulting regression model. In this regard CTR is an automated way of engineering new features, each of which is the collective sum of the predictors within each group. The algorithm can be used when the number of variables is larger than, or smaller than, the number of observations. Creating new features that affect the response in a similar manner improves predictive modeling, especially in domains where the relationships between predictors are not known a priori. CTR borrows computational strategies from both linear regression (fast model updating when adding/modifying a feature in the model) and regression trees (fast partitioning to form and split groups) to achieve outstanding computational and predictive performance. Finding features that represent hidden groups of predictors (i.e., a hidden ontology) that impact the response only via their sum also has major interpretability advantages, which we demonstrate with a real data example of predicting political affiliations with television viewing habits. In numerical comparisons over a variety of examples, we demonstrate that both computational expense and predictive performance are far superior to existing methods that create features as groups of predictors. Moreover, CTR has overall predictive performance that is comparable to or slightly better than the regular lasso method, which we include as a reference benchmark for comparison even though it is non-group-based, in addition to having substantial computational and interpretive advantages over lasso. Mass transfer-based models are among the extensively applied reference evapotranspiration (ETo) estimation approaches that have been proven to provide reliable estimates under certain climatic and geographical conditions. A major issue with such approaches is the high variations in wind speed time series, which is a governing meteorological parameter in mass transfer-based models. few studies have focused on applying wavelet transform as a robust pre-processing technique for ETo estimation. A major question with coupling wavelet transforms with soft computing methods would be the proper choice of the wavelet function, vanishing moments and the decomposition levels. The present study aims at assessing different wavelet functions coupled with boosted regression tree (BT) models, i.e. wavelet-BT (WBT), in estimating ETo values (through mass transfer parameters) in both coastal and island regions, where it is supposed that wind speed variations are affected by sea–inland interactions and so has the sharp variations (unlike ETo). The obtained results showed that the coupled WBT model could improve the single BT model results to a great extent, and meanwhile, the Daubechies wavelet function with six vanishing moments provided the most accurate results in all the locations. We experience a life that is full of ups and downs. The ability to bounce back after adverse life events such as the loss of a loved one or serious illness declines with age, and such isolated events can even trigger accelerated aging. How humans respond to common day-to-day perturbations is less clear. Here, we infer the aging status from smartphone behavior by using a decision tree regression model trained to accurately estimate the chronological age based on the dynamics of touchscreen interactions. Individuals (N = 280, 21 to 87 y of age) expressed smartphone behavior that appeared younger on certain days and older on other days through the observation period that lasted up to ~4 y. We captured the essence of these fluctuations by leveraging the mathematical concept of critical transitions and tipping points in complex systems. In most individuals, we find one or more alternative stable aging states separated by tipping points. The older the individual, the lower the resilience to forces that push the behavior across the tipping point into an older state. Traditional accounts of aging based on sparse longitudinal data spanning decades suggest a gradual behavioral decline with age. Taken together with our current results, we propose that the gradual age-related changes are interleaved with more complex dynamics at shorter timescales where the same individual may navigate distinct behavioral aging states from one day to the next. Interval‐censored data arise when a failure process is under intermittent observation and failure status is only known at assessment times. We consider the development of predictive algorithms when training samples involve interval censoring. Using censoring unbiased transformations and pseudo‐observations, we define observed data loss functions, which are unbiased estimates of the corresponding complete data loss functions. We show that regression trees based on these loss functions can recover the tree structure and yield good predictive accuracy. An application is given to a study involving individuals with psoriatic arthritis where the aim is to identify genetic markers useful for the prediction of axial disease within 10 years of a baseline assessment. An increasing number of studies in botanical gardens are investigating species' responses to climate change. However, the influence of local environmental or habitat conditions such as soil nutrient status or microclimate on phenology and the link between morpho‐physiological functional traits and phenological stages are poorly understood, making it difficult to extrapolate patterns from botanical gardens to natural environments. Therefore, we selected herbaceous species growing in two semi‐natural habitats, namely, semi‐dry grasslands (SDGs) and mesophilic grasslands (MGs) and the botanical garden of Jena (Germany) to investigate the influence of habitat conditions on interspecific and intraspecific patterns in phenology, functional traits and their associations. For 16 species, we monitored leaf and flowering phenology weekly for 133 populations from the three habitats, measured morpho‐physiological traits (i.e., whole plant, leaf and reproductive traits), as well as habitat conditions and compared the measurements across habitats. Multivariate analyses revealed that morpho‐physiological traits conspicuously showed stronger differences between habitats compared to phenological traits. Populations on MG showed temporal niche segregation, whereas populations on SDG showed flowering synchrony. Boosted Regression Trees showed that morpho‐physiological traits, especially reproductive traits, strongly influenced phenological traits and that the trait‐phenology relationships were highly habitat‐specific. We conclude that species phenology is broadly similar between botanical gardens and local habitats. However, phenological responses to the environment may be constrained by a certain suite of correlated traits due to ecological plant strategies that vary across habitats. The effect of habitat conditions on morpho‐physiological functional traits and phenology‐trait relationships is important and should not be neglected at local scales, implying consequences at larger scales. We combined two climate‐based distribution models with three finer‐scale suitability models to identify habitat for pronghorn recovery in California now and into the future. We used a consensus approach to identify areas of suitable climate now and future for pronghorn in California. We compared the results of climate models from two separate hypotheses about their historical ecology in the state. Under the migration hypothesis, pronghorn were expected to be limited climatically by extreme cold in winter and extreme heat in summer; under the niche reduction hypothesis, historical pronghorn of distribution would have better represented the climatic limitations of the species. We combined occurrences from GPS collars distributed across three populations of pronghorn in the state to create three distinct habitat suitability models: (1) an ensemble model using random forests, Maxent, classification and regression Trees, and a generalized linear model; (2) a step selection function; and (3) an expert‐driven model. We evaluated consensus among both the climate models and the suitability models to prioritize areas for, and evaluate the prospects of, pronghorn recovery. Climate suitability for pronghorn in the future depends heavily on model assumptions. Under the migration hypothesis, our model predicted that there will be no suitable climate in California in the future. Under the niche reduction hypothesis, by contrast, suitable climate will expand. Habitat suitability also depended on the methods used, but areas of consensus among all three models exist in large patches throughout the state. Identifying habitat for a species which has undergone extreme range collapse, and which has very fine scale habitat needs, presents novel challenges for spatial ecologists. Our multimethod, multihypothesis approach can allow habitat modelers to identify areas of consensus and, perhaps more importantly, fill critical knowledge gaps that could resolve disagreements among the models. For pronghorn, a better understanding of their upper thermal tolerances and whether historical populations migrated will be crucial to their potential recovery in California and throughout the arid Southwest. BACKGROUND: Previously, a lexicon and protocol for quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) was established for the Uganda sweetpotato breeding program. The implication of QDA scores for priority sensory attributes on consumer preference should be determined to interpret results efficiently and make decisions effectively. The present study aimed to develop a gender‐responsive decision tree to obtain an overall sweetpotato eating quality score to facilitate demand‐led targeted breeding selection. It focused on Kamuli and Hoima districts (Uganda) and uses pre‐lease advanced clones ('NKB3', 'NKB105', 'NKB135', 'D11' and 'D20'), released varieties ('NASPOT 8' and 'NAROSPOT 1') and landraces ('Muwulu‐Aduduma', 'Umbrella'). RESULTS: Including boiled sweetpotato sensory characteristics, namely mealy, sweet taste, sweetpotato smell, firm and not fibrous, in breeding design would benefit end‐users, especially women given their role in varietal selection, food preparation and marketing. 'D20', 'NASPOT 8' and 'NAROSPOT 1' were most liked in both districts. 'NKB3' and 'D11' were the least liked in Hoima, whereas 'Muwulu‐Aduduma' was the least liked in Kamuli. There was a positive correlation between color and overall liking (r2 = 0.8) and consumers liked the color (average rating ≥ 6 on a nine‐point hedonic scale) of all genotypes. Threshold values (average rating on 11‐point scales) for consumer acceptability were identified (sweet taste = 6, sweetpotato aroma and flavor = 6, firmness = 3, and mealiness = 4). A regression decision tree tool was created to calculate an eating quality selection index when screening lines in breeding programs using the values. CONCLUSION: Decision trees that include consumer needs and gender considerations would facilitate demand‐led breeding and make varietal selection in sweetpotato breeding programs more effective. © 2023 The Authors.
