This mini review provides a concise overview of recent developments in mobile-assisted vocabulary learning (MAVL) and compares its effectiveness to traditional methods in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings. The review synthesizes findings from recent empirical studies, highlighting how MAVL, particularly digital flashcards, promotes learner autonomy, engagement, and long-term vocabulary retention through features like spaced repetition and gamification. Traditional methods such as paper flashcards, while effective in structured classroom settings, lack the interactive and personalized benefits of MAVL. The review also discusses existing research gaps, including the need for further investigation into productive vocabulary use and long-term retention. Future developments in the field may include hybrid approaches that combine the strengths of both traditional and digital methods. Retrieval practice—the process of actively calling information to mind rather than passively studying materials—has been proven to be a highly effective learning strategy. However, only recently, researchers have started to examine differences between learners in terms of the optimal conditions of retrieval practice in applied educational settings. In this study (N = 118), we focus on learners with dyslexia. We compare their performance to the performance of typical learners in an adaptive retrieval practice task using both typing‐based and speech‐based response conditions. We find that typical learners outperform learners with dyslexia when they are asked to respond by typing, but that this difference disappears when learners respond by speech. Using a mathematical model to decompose response times, we demonstrate that this typing‐specific disadvantage in learners with dyslexia is mainly a consequence of processing delays, rather than poorer memory performance. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying declarative learning in dyslexia, and they can be used to tailor educational technology toward the needs of neurodiverse learners. Introduction: Individuals' memories are assessed in multiple contexts; however, depending on the context, how an individual is questioned may impact the quantity and quality of the details reported. One goal of this study is to investigate how the modality of questioning (individuals talk or write about an event) impacts memory reports. Additionally, being tested on previously learned information improves memory for that information compared to re-studying it. Consequently, another goal is to examine how questioning impacts memory reports compared to a second exposure. We utilized open-ended and pointed questions (true and false). Method: Participants watched a short video and were questioned (Experiment 1: In-Person; Experiment 2: Virtual) about its contents immediately, 1 week, and 1 month later. Results: The current study found that writing leads to better quality memory reports than speaking, and the benefit is present 1 week later. Additionally, we found that writing mitigates an anticipated testing benefit, although this depended on whether a pointed or open-ended question was asked. Restudying (vs. immediate testing) led to better performance for the false pointed questions. However, the better performance operated differently depending on whether participants wrote or spoke following restudying, perhaps due to a differential criterion shift between the Restudy-Written and the Restudy-Spoken conditions. Discussion: We conclude that the impact of the modality of questioning is influenced in several ways by the types of questions asked, which bears significance for many domains because one modality (or a combination) may be more suitable for producing more accurate memory reports as a function of different domains. Retrieval practice is a powerful method for consolidating long-term learning. When learning takes place over an extended period, how should tests be scheduled to obtain the maximal benefit? In an end-test schedule, all material is studied prior to a large practice test on all studied material, whereas in an interim test schedule, learning is divided into multiple study/test cycles in which each test is smaller and only assesses material from the preceding study block. Past investigations have generally found a difference between these schedules during practice but not during a final assessment, although they may have been underpowered. Five experiments confirmed that final assessment performance was better in students taught using interim than end tests in list (Experiments 1, 2, and 5) and paired associate (Experiments 3 and 4) learning, with a meta-analysis of all available studies (k = 19) yielding a small- to medium-sized effect, g = 0.25, 95% confidence interval [0.09, 0.42]. Experiment 5 finds that the higher level of practice retrieval success in interim tests contributes to the grain size effect, but the effect is eliminated if these tests are too easy. Additional analyses also suggest that the forward testing effect, in which tests promote subsequent learning, may be a major cause of the grain size effect. Teaching is increasingly defined through the syntax of cognitive science, by retrieval practice, spaced learning, and interleaving, generating a computational rhythm for learning as a system of inputs and outputs that builds up an individual's memory over time. This, I argue, is at odds with the choreography of art and design education as an aesthetic, social, and material practice. An alternative mapping is required to fully understand the chronology of learning that takes place in and through the subject of art and design with human and nonhuman others. Drawing from a review of research in the field of Neuroaesthetics, I will seek to defend the unique temporality of art and design education and imagine different visualisations of learning in the subject beyond the computational. Episodic memory, with its emphasis on temporal–spatial contexts, has been a longstanding focus in memory research. While previous studies have investigated the role of emotion in temporal source memory using emotionally charged stimuli, such as emotional words or images, the influence of a separated emotional context remains less explored. This study sought to understand the impact of separate emotional contexts on temporal source memory. Participants were shown Chinese characters alongside separate emotional contexts (i.e. a neutral or negative picture) and then engaged in either a retrieval practice or a control condition. Finally, they were tested for recognition, temporal source memory, and emotional source memory for all the learned characters. Results revealed that a negative emotional context, unlike a neutral setting, enhanced the accuracy of temporal memory for adjacent neutral characters. However, this negative context reduced the accuracy of recalling the associated emotion. Importantly, the boost in temporal memory due to the emotional context remained even when participants were unsure or mistaken about the associated emotion. This study demonstrates the complex interplay between emotion and temporal memory, underscoring the enhancement effect of separated emotional contexts on temporal recall, irrespective of explicit emotional memory retrieval. The present study on intentional retrieval practice compared the benefits of presenting words in either informative or uninformative sentence contexts. Participants first studied a list of English words with their translations. Then, they were all exposed to half of the words with informative sentences containing meaning clues in the Context Inference (CI) condition and half with uninformative sentences devoid of such clues in the Memory Retrieval (MR) condition as part of retrieval-based practising. Participants were required to type the L1 translation for each word presented using a mobile application. Data were collected by both form-recall and meaning-recall tests immediately afterwards and then a week later. In addition, this study focused on the relationship between working memory capacity (WMC) and word retention in these two conditions to explore the suggestion that individuals may benefit differently from retrieval practices. Although the results showed that both conditions contributed to word retention, the MR condition was significantly more effective than the CI condition for the participants’ long-term retention. Further, the results revealed an overall positive effect of WMC on word retention in both conditions, with high-WMC individuals achieving higher retention scores than low-WMC individuals. AbstractProgrammatic assessment for learning (PAL) involves programmatically structured collection of assessment data for the purpose of learning. In this guide, we examine and provide recommendations on several aspects: First, we review the evolution that has led to the development of programmatic assessment, providing clarification of some of its terminology. Second, we outline the learning processes that guide the design of PAL, including distributed learning, interleaving, overlearning, and test-enhanced learning. Third, we review the evolving nature of validity and provide insights into validity from a program perspective. Benefits of self-testing for learning have been consistently shown for simple materials such as word lists learned by rote memorization. Considerably less evidence for such benefits exists for complex, more educationally relevant materials and its application to new situations. The present study explores the mechanisms underlying this transfer. To this end, a typical retrieval-practice-effect paradigm was applied to foster the learning of an artificial language. Participants either repeatedly studied grammatically correct exemplar sentences of the artificial language or engaged in a cloze test as the interim test after learning. To assess far transfer, participants in both groups of restudy and retrieval practice engaged in a grammaticality judgment test after a delay of 5 min and 1 week. In addition, participants in both groups completed a final memory test (i.e., a cloze test identical to the initial test) 1 week after learning. In addition to a long-term memory benefit of retrieval practice, results revealed also a retrieval-practice benefit in the far-transfer test after the 1-week delay. The findings further support the view that far transfer is supported by learning the underlying grammatical rules as opposed to memorizing the material. Thus, retrieval practice is also effective for fostering learning of complex materials and, even more importantly, for promoting transfer of learning—a crucial goal in modern educational practices. While many theories assume that sleep is critical in stabilizing and strengthening memories, our recent behavioral study (Liu & Ranganath, 2021, Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 28[6], 2035–2044) suggests that sleep does not simply stabilize memories. Instead, it plays a more complex role, integrating information across two temporally distinct learning episodes. In the current study, we simulated the results of Liu and Ranganath (2021) using our biologically plausible computational model, TEACH, developed based on the complementary learning systems (CLS) framework. Our model suggests that when memories are activated during sleep, the reduced influence of temporal context establishes connections across temporally separated events through mutual training between the hippocampus and neocortex. In addition to providing a compelling mechanistic explanation for the selective effect of sleep, this model offers new examples of the diverse ways in which the cortex and hippocampus can interact during learning. Background: College students often do not retain what they learn in Statistics in order to apply it in Experimental Psychology. Self-explanation, that is, elaborating on what one is trying to learn by asking questions, making inferences, etc., improves learning and may improve retention. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether self-explanation was superior to students' usual study methods specifically for learning some basic concepts in statistics, and, if so, if it was similarly useful for retention a semester after the initial learning. Method: We used 199 college students as participants in a randomized, between participant, two-part experiment examining the effects of training by prompting self-explanations as a potential solution to this applied problem. Results: The self-explanations that we elicited improved initial learning and were superior to students' usual study methods, but did not benefit retention. Conclusions: Future research on improving the quality of the self-explanations and training with spaced retrieval practice, in order to benefit retention, is suggested. Teaching Implication: Self-explanation should be implemented for teaching statistics in order to benefit initial learning. However, teachers should explore other methods to accomplish retention. In recent years, a large body of research has found that testing proves to be a more efficacious method for improving learning when juxtaposed with simply restudying material. Nevertheless, there remains a lack of understanding regarding whether the testing effect extends to the comprehension of L2 discourse, as well as the factors that mediate this effect. This study sought to examine the impact of different relearning strategies and text complexity on varying test formats in L2 discourse comprehension. A total of 150 EFL university students were divided into four groups: rereading group, self-explanation group, free recall group and free recall combined with self-explanation group. All participants studied two texts with differing levels of complexity. After one week, all of them underwent a final test. In both verbatim and inference questions, the free recall group and the free recall combined with self-explanation group proved to be more effective in enhancing learning performance than the other two restudying groups, which highlights the significance of retrieval-based learning in the context of L2 discourse comprehension. Furthermore, the superior performance of the free recall combined with self-explanation group in answering inference questions of the complex text validated the advantages of combining elaborative strategy with testing. This finding is consistent with the complementary view, indicating that retrieval-based elaboration prompts both constructive and consolidative processing of complex information, thereby fostering a deeper comprehension of the text compared to retrieval alone. The effortful process of retrieving information from memory has been established as an effective strategy for improving student learning. However, we have a limited understanding of the development of retrieval practice in children, including contexts that may scaffold its benefit. In the current pre-registered study, we examined whether the use of hints during retrieval practice improved free recall in an online science learning task in 8- to 13-years-olds (N = 77, Nfemales = 36). We found partial evidence supporting the provision of hints as boosting the benefit of retrieval practice. Children’s long-term retention of science facts was higher when they received hints during an earlier practice test compared to restudying information, but not compared to a test only condition without hints. Furthermore, we found similar effects across both age and levels of confidence, suggesting that retrieval practice remains stable across these factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The act of recalling memories can paradoxically lead to the forgetting of other associatedmemories, a phenomenon known as retrievalinduced forgetting (RIF). Inhibitory control mechanisms, primarily mediated by the prefrontal cortex, are thought to contribute to RIF. In this study, we examined whether stimulating the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) with transcranial direct current stimulation modulates RIF and investigated the associated electrophysiological correlates. In a randomized study, 50 participants (27 males and 23 females) received either real or sham stimulation before performing retrieval practice on target memories. After retrieval practice, a finalmemory test to assess RIF was administered. We found that stimulation selectively increased the retrieval accuracy of competing memories, thereby decreasing RIF, while the retrieval accuracy of target memories remained unchanged. The reduction in RIF was associated with a more pronounced beta desynchronization within the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (left-DLPFC), in an early time window (<500 ms) after cue onset during retrieval practice. This led to a stronger beta desynchronization within the parietal cortex in a later time window, an established marker for successfulmemory retrieval. Together, our results establish the causal involvement of the mPFC in actively suppressing competing memories and demonstrate that while forgetting arises as a consequence of retrieving specific memories, these two processes are functionally independent. Our findings suggest that stimulation potentially disrupted inhibitory control processes, as evidenced by reduced RIF and stronger beta desynchronization in fronto-parietal brain regions during memory retrieval, although further research is needed to elucidate the specific mechanisms underlying this effect. This Perspective article expands on a working memory-dependent dual-process model, originally proposed by Zheng et al.1, to elucidate individual differences in the testing effect. This model posits that the testing effect comprises two processes: retrieval-attempt and post-retrieval re-encoding. We substantiate this model with empirical evidence and propose future research. Students' academic performance improves when they use active study methods and discussion of study strategy efficacy can impact students' choice. Faculty often employ mid-semester wrappers to encourage student reflection on their study habits, so we explored whether exposure to research about learning embedded within post-exam wrappers was associated with changes in student study strategies using a pre/post design in a first semester biology course. Early and final wrappers collected information about students' choices and reflections on those choices, and mid-semester wrappers including links to research descriptions at the Learning Scientists website. Students reported initially using passive learning methods, such as rereading, for their primary study strategies, and the primary intended change was to increase time spent studying. At the end of the semester, the majority of students reported shifting to active strategies such as forced recall, with a proportional decline in rereading as a primary study strategy. This essay considers what happens in the English classroom when teaching the same lesson to two classes considered to be of different levels of 'ability'. It explores what happens during a discussion about the fate of Eva Smith in An Inspector Calls when students' reading of a text diverges. I consider what teachers do when students' readings of a text goes against our expectations and accepted critical norms of both the teacher and the National Curriculum. Retrieval practice can reduce associative memory deficits for older adults but they underutilize this potent learning tool during self-regulated learning. The current experiment investigated whether teaching older adults to use retrieval practice more can improve their self-regulated learning. Younger and older adults made decisions about when to study, how often to engage in retrieval practice, and when to stop learning a list of medication-side effect pairs. Some younger and older adults received instructions before learning that emphasized the mnemonic benefits of retrieval practice over restudying material and described how to schedule retrieval practice to learn to a goal criterion level. This minimal intervention was effective for improving both younger and older adults' associative memory. These data indicate that a simple strategy for improving older adults self-regulated learning is to provide them with instructions that teach them how to use criterion learning to schedule their retrieval practice for to-be learned material. Successive relearning (a combination of retrieval practice and distributed practice) can boost student performance in memory-based knowledge, such as key-term definitions. The current classroom experiments sought to extend this finding to application-based exam questions. As part of students' coursework, they completed assignments in which they successively relearned class concepts in one of three formats: examples, definitions, or a mix of both. Then, students took course exams containing novel application-based questions about concepts they had successively relearned, as well as business-as-usual concepts that were covered in class lectures but were not included in the successive relearning assignments. Performance on the novel exam questions did not differ between the three successive relearning formats, but students did perform about 10 percentage points higher on concepts they had successively relearned compared to business-as-usual concepts. Thus, successive relearning can improve performance on application-based questions regardless of whether students practice examples or definitions. General Audience Summary: Many techniques to improve student learning have been introduced over the years, but few have shown benefits as large and long-standing as taking practice tests on to-be-learned material (retrieval practice) and spacing learning out over time (distributed practice). Successive relearning combines these two techniques—a student practices recalling information until it is recalled correctly and then revisits the information again later to repeat the same process. In previous experiments, successive relearning has boosted student learning of memory-based knowledge, like key-term definitions, but scant work has examined successive relearning of applied knowledge, like examples of concepts. The current two experiments sought to (a) replicate the finding that successive relearning boosts performance (compared to how students prepare on their own), but extend that finding to application-based questions, and (b) identify if successive relearning of examples or definitions is better (or a mix of the two). These experiments were conducted in classes taught by the two authors. As part of students' coursework, they completed assignments in which they successively relearned class concepts by practicing recalling either examples of concepts, definitions of concepts, or a mix of both. Then, students took a course exam containing new application-based questions tapping into concepts they had successively relearned, as well as business-as-usual concepts. Results of both experiments showed students' performance on application-based exam questions did not differ based on the type of information they successively relearned. However, students performed the equivalent of one letter grade higher for concepts they had successively relearned compared to concepts they studied on their own (i.e., business-as-usual concepts). Additionally, successive relearning of examples took students more time than learning definitions. Retrieval practice of studied information can facilitate recall of subsequently encountered new information, relative to both restudy and other no-retrieval-practice conditions. Here, this forward testing effect was examined in three experiments employing both related and unrelated prose passages as study material. Participants studied five prose passages and were tested on the final passage. Between study of the single passages, participants practiced retrieval of the immediately preceding passage, restudied the passage, generated semantic information unrelated to the single passages, or conducted simple arithmetic tasks. The forward testing effect arose both when the passages were related and when they were unrelated. However, only with unrelated passages did the effect generalize to semantic generation, and only with related passages did retrieval practice create recall superior in level to recall when the final passage was studied only. The relatedness of materials seems to influence how retrieval practice promotes new learning. General Audience Summary: Students, during exam preparation, sometimes face the study of quite unrelated materials relevant to different courses and at other times the study of highly related materials relevant to a single course. In both situations, students need to master vast amounts of complex material and clues would thus be helpful on how to optimize new learning. Here, we addressed the issue of whether (a) retrieval practice interspersed between the study of such materials can aid learning and memory of the final critical material and (b) such beneficial effect of retrieval practice would be influenced by the relatedness of study materials. The results of three experiments are reported, in which participants were presented with five unrelated or five related prose passages on educationally relevant topics and were tested on the final critical passage immediately after its presentation. In all experiments, recall of the final passage was higher when, between the presentation of the single passages, participants engaged in retrieval practice compared to restudy of the preceding passages, thus demonstrating a recall benefit in response to retrieval practice with both types of prose material. Strikingly, only with unrelated prose passages did a similar recall benefit arise when participants engaged in retrieval of other (semantic) information between the single passages, and only with related prose passages was recall of the final passage higher when the preceding passages were presented and retrieved than when no preceding passages were presented. These findings suggest that retrieval practice can promote new learning in both putative course scenarios entertained above. However, intermittent retrieval of information unrelated to the study material (e.g., setting up the evening grocery list) may promote new learning only when study materials refer to different courses, and skipping preceding materials may impair learning of the final material only when study materials refer to a single course. University students often learn statistics in large classes, and in such learning environments, students face an exceptionally high risk of failure. One reason for this is students' frequent statistics anxiety. This study shows how students can be supported using e-learning exercises with automated knowledge of correct response feedback, supplementing a face-to-face lecture. To this end, we surveyed 67 undergraduate social science students at a German university and observed their weekly e-learning exercises. We aggregated students' exercise behavior throughout the semester to explain their exam performance. To control for participation bias, we included essential predictors of educational success, such as prior achievement, motivation, personality traits, time preferences, and goals. We applied a double selection procedure based on the machine learning method Elastic Net to include an optimal but sparse set of control variables. The e-learning exercises indirectly promoted the self-regulated learning techniques of retrieval practice and spacing and provided corrective feedback. Working on the e-learning exercises increased students' performance on the final exam, even after controlling for the rich set of control variables. Two-thirds of students used our designed e-learning exercises; however, only a fraction of students spaced out the exercises, although students who completed the exercises during the semester and were not cramming at the end benefited additionally. The retention of foundational knowledge is crucial in learning and teaching mathematics. However, a significant part of university students do not achieve long-term knowledge and problem-solving skills. A possible tool to increase further retention is testing, the strategic use of retrieval to enhance memory. In this study, the effect of a special kind of testing versus worked examples was investigated in an authentic educational setting, in an algebra course for pre-service mathematics teachers. The potential benefits of using tests versus showing students worked examples at the end of each practice session during a semester were examined. According to the results, there was no difference between the effectiveness of the two methods in the medium term—on the midterm that students took on the 6th week and the final that students took on the 13th week of the semester, the testing group performed the same as the worked example group. However, testing was more beneficial regarding long-term retention in studying and solving problems in abstract mathematics. Analyzing the results of the post-test that students took five months after their final test, the authors found that the improvement of those students who learned the material with testing was significantly larger than that of the worked example group. These findings suggest that testing can have a meaningful effect on abstract algebra knowledge and a long-lasting impact on solving complex, abstract mathematical problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Retrieval practice is a learning strategy that has repeatedly been found to have positive effects on memory and learning. However, studies indicate that students rarely use retrieval practice on a voluntary basis. The objective of the present study was to examine students' self-regulated use of retrieval practice, and to determine whether sex and individual differences in cognitive and non-cognitive aspects are related to optional use of practice testing. A classroom study was conducted with 146 upper-secondary school students taking courses in mathematics and Swedish. An ABAB design was used to compare students' optional and non-optional use of retrieval practice (i.e., repeated online quizzing). Students performed cognitive tasks to assess working memory capacity and fluid intelligence and completed self-reports of non-cognitive factors related to school achievement, such as grit, need for cognition (NFC), conscientiousness and openness. Quiz use was then compared using paired- and independent-samples t-tests, and hierarchical linear regression analyses explored relations to individual differences. The results showed that students completed significantly fewer quizzes in the optional sections than in the non-optional sections, and that females completed significantly more optional quizzes than males in Swedish, but not in mathematics. Further, the results showed that conscientiousness predicted optional quiz use in mathematics, whereas sex, NFC, conscientiousness, and openness predicted quiz use in Swedish. To conclude, although the findings show a relatively low optional/self-regulated use of practice testing, in line with earlier research, they suggest that sex and non-cognitive factors, such as personality characteristics, can predict optional use of practice testing. This experiment investigated rumination as a possible mechanism for the phenomenon of depression increasing negative autobiographical memories. Participants recalled a negative autobiographical memory involving school before rating the negative mood intensity of that memory, then half of the participants ruminated on that memory and half of the participants were distracted from it. Participants then rated the memory again, and either ruminated or were distracted for a second time before rating the memory for a third time and completing the Beck Depression Inventory-II, the Rumination on Sadness Scale, and demographic questions. The negative mood intensity of the autobiographical memory decreased over time, but did so to a lesser extent when participants ruminated on it versus being distracted (interaction p < .001, d = 1.01). Furthermore, for the rumination condition, participants with greater depression scores reported negativity ratings that decreased at a slower rate over time; for the distraction condition, participants with greater depression scores reported negativity ratings that decreased at a faster rate over time (interaction p = .040, R2 = .047). Depression leads to rumination, and may also amplify the effect of rumination on the negativity of autobiographical memories. The effects of rumination may be due to memory effects such as retrieval practice and mood congruency. Recent research has suggested that students prefer restudying over retrieval practice when learning difficult materials, despite the latter being a more effective learning strategy. The current study investigated whether an instructional intervention can improve the use of retrieval practice for both easy and difficult materials. In Experiment 1, after initial learning of each item, participants rated their perceived mental effort (PME) and judgment of learning (JOL) for each item. Then, participants chose whether to restudy or take retrieval practice for that item. The results showed that participants chose to take retrieval practice less frequently for difficult items compared to easy ones. Furthermore, participants’ ratings of PME and JOL sequentially mediated the relationship between item difficulty and their learning strategy choices. Specifically, difficult items resulted in higher levels of PME, which in turn led to lower JOL, ultimately reducing the likelihood of choosing retrieval practice. In Experiment 2, half of the participants received an instructional intervention, which revealed that while students prefer restudying for difficult items, retrieval practice benefits both easy and difficult items in long-term retention. The remaining half did not receive such intervention and were designated as the control group. The results indicated that, compared to the control group, students who received the intervention increased the odds of choosing retrieval practice for both types of materials after the intervention. For many professors, testing is primarily a tool for assessing the learning of students. However, research into the "testing effect" has established the value of testing also as a learning tool, not just as an assessment tool. This article provides an overview of this research and also of my own experiences in using a variety of testing approaches. Based on these experiences, the article offers a process for adopting testing as a learning tool, along with a review of design choices. The goal of this study was to test the effect of retrieval practice on word learning in children who are hard of hearing (HH).Twenty-six TH children and 16 children who are HH completed a speech perception and a vocabulary test, and a rapid word-learning game to learn new words under no retrieval, immediate retrieval, and spaced retrieval conditions.Linear mixed-effect models revealed that learning condition and time predicted 48% of the variance in word recognition, and age predicted 15% of word recall variance. We observed no differences in word recognition and recall between TH children and children who are HH. Children learned and remembered more words in the immediate and spaced retrieval practice conditions than in the no retrieval condition.Retrieval practice is more effective for word learning and retention than passive exposure (no retrieval). Clinical and educational practices for children who are DHH could combine explicit instruction using targeted exposures and retrieval of new words with naturalistic approaches. Background and aims: Current evidence shows that children with developmental language disorder (DLD) benefit from spaced retrieval during word learning activities. Word recall is quite good relative to recall with alternative word learning procedures. However, recall on an absolute basis can be improved further; many studies report that fewer than two-thirds of the words are learned, even with the assistance of spaced retrieval during the learning activities. In this article we identify details of spaced retrieval that are less well understood in an effort to promote more effective learning through retrieval practice. Main contribution: We discuss the importance of factors such as: (a) integrating immediate retrieval with spaced retrieval trials; (b) determining whether gradual increases in spacing have more than short-term benefits relative to equal spacing; (c) discovering the number of successful retrievals sufficient to ensure later recall; (d) using spaced retrieval to avoid erosion of phonetic details on later recall tests; and (e) whether the well-documented difficulties with learning word forms might be tied to a particular subgroup of children with DLD. We also speculate on some of the possible reasons why spaced retrieval is beneficial in the first place. Conclusions: Although many children with DLD make gains in word learning through procedures that incorporate spaced retrieval, there are numerous details involved in the process that can alter its success. Until we have a better understanding of the boundaries of spaced retrieval's effectiveness, we will not be taking full advantage of this promising addition to word learning procedures. Implications: Spaced retrieval activities can be an important addition to the resources that clinicians and educators have available to assist children in their word learning. Background: Test enhancing learning (TEL) had shown a significant effect in promoting the learning of many learning contents. However, its effect on the postgraduate medical level was unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of TEL in 1st year anesthesiology residents learning neuroanesthesia. Method: The residents were randomized to either group A, which was assigned to do the intervention exam (exam A) for two times during learning in neuroanesthesia, or group B, which studied in the same environment without doing the exam. All participants were assigned to do the assessment exam (exam B) at one month after the end of the rotation. All of the exams were ten multiple choice questions (MCQ). Since the anesthesia residents rotated to neuroanesthesia for two weeks twice during the first year, we conducted the experiments twice, using exams that covered both basic science (BS) and clinical science (CS) topics. Results: There was no significant difference in mean ± SD of the scores for assessment exams asking about the basic science topic (BS_B) [group A (5.25 ± 2.05) VS group B (4.90 ± 1.80); p = 0.570] and the clinical science topic (CS_B) [group A (6.30 ± 1.26) VS group B (5.95 ± 1.61); p = 0.448]. Conclusion: This study showed null findings on the effect of TEL on learning in residents of the first year of anesthesiology. More studies on TEL were required to confirm the effect of TEL and find the appropriate test format that could enhance learning for post-graduate medical trainees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to the attentional boost effect (ABE), detecting a target in a dual-task paradigm can facilitate memory encoding of concurrently presented stimuli, but the detection stimuli always appears transiently (only for 100 ms). In order to gain deeper insights into the mechanisms behind ABE, it is crucial to investigate whether the brief presentation of the detection stimulus is a necessary prerequisite for generating ABE. To address this issue, the present study manipulated the presentation time of the detection stimulus (500-ms vs. 100 ms) and controlled the study-testing time interval (immediate test vs. 24 h test). It turned out that, the short-duration (100 ms) detection condition produced an ABE similar to that of the long-duration (500 ms) condition at the immediate test, but only the ABE produced by the short-duration condition could be continued until the 24 h test (Experiments 1), and the ABE produced by the long-duration condition disappeared in the 24 h test. Nonetheless, when a retrieval practice session was introduced before the 24 h test, the ABE generated by the long-duration condition also extended to the 24 h test (Experiment 2). Regarding ERP components, the short-duration detection condition elicited a more negative mean amplitude in the 500–700 ms time window compared to the long detection-duration condition (Experiment 3). This implies that the duration of the detection stimulus likely plays a central role in influencing ABE through its effect on engram stability, with the short-duration condition potentially leading to a more stable engram compared to the long-duration condition. Education for Sustainable Development focuses on improving environmental knowledge to combat misinformation and promote sustainable behaviours. In two experiments, we investigated whether retrieval practice, known to foster lasting knowledge acquisition, is a useful tool for (1) increasing environmental knowledge and (2) for improving environmental attitudes and behaviour (i.e., spillover effect). Participants studied a text on the effects of online streaming behaviour by means of retrieval practice or by copying the text. Knowledge gain was assessed after one (Experiment 1) and two weeks (Experiment 2). Attitudes and behaviour were assessed pre‐ and post‐intervention. In both experiments, participants recalled more environmental knowledge after retrieval practice compared to copying. Attitudes and behaviour did not differ between both groups, but attitudes increased after the intervention in both groups. Only Experiment 1 showed declining streaming times. Concept mapping is a practical task for enhancing learning performance. Learners usually construct concept maps while studying the learning material or after studying. In the first case, the learning material is available during construction, and learners are less involved in retrieval practice from memory (study-based concept mapping; SCM). In the second case, the learning material is absent during construction, and the learners rely on retrieving information from memory (retrieval-based concept mapping, RCM). RCM is assumed to be associated with lower concept map quality and higher cognitive load but better elaboration and learning performance than SCM. This study investigated how the availability of the learning material influenced these variables in biology classrooms. Unlike other studies, this study provided learners with an authentic learning environment and prior concept mapping training. After the concept mapping training, n = 129 secondary school students were assigned to an SCM or RCM condition in a quasi-experimental design. As expected, students in the RCM condition constructed concept maps of lower quality but outperformed SCM students concerning elaboration activities and learning performance. The perceived intrinsic cognitive load was higher in the RCM condition. The results indicate that using concept mapping as a retrieval practice could support students' learning in biology. Retrieval practice has been shown to be an effective and efficient way to enhance learning and which has led researchers to call for retrieval practice to be part of teachers' regular repertoire of activities within a classroom. Recent policy changes in England have seen retrieval practice being encouraged and emphasized as a strategy that teachers should use in their practice. However, much of the research to support this has been conducted under controlled studies both in laboratory and classroom settings. Therefore, in the present study, we report on how teachers in England are implementing retrieval practice "in the wild"—in their classrooms outside of a controlled study. Findings indicate that teachers are using retrieval practice regularly in the classroom, even if it is not part of a mandatory school policy, with quizzes and short answer questions being the most reported format used. Additionally, teachers are motivated to use retrieval practice beyond the direct benefit of the testing effect. Recalling previously learnt information from memory can boost learning. By using strategies in the classroom that encourage students to recall information, teachers can improve student outcomes. In England, teachers are encouraged, through educational policy, to use these strategies in their classrooms. The incorporation of evidence-based practices into the classroom increases achievement and retention of students in STEM. However, the effectiveness of these practices depends on the degree to which faculty are knowledgeable about the strategies and implement the strategies in their teaching. This study investigates the familiarity, adoption, and perceived value of six evidence-based learning strategies (EBLSs): concrete examples, dual coding, elaboration, interleaving, retrieval practice, and spaced practice. A national survey was completed by 606 faculty from across the United States who teach various STEM classes in biology, chemistry, and physics. The results from the survey suggest that overall awareness of EBLSs was relatively low, with the exception of using concrete examples. However, faculty report moderately frequent implementation of several EBLSs into their classrooms and assignments. A majority of faculty report relatively high perceived value of the EBLSs, with the exception of interleaving. Practicing retrieval is a potent learning enhancer. Theoretical accounts of the testing effect generally suggest that the magnitude of the testing effect is dependent on retrieval practice performance, such that conditions that promote better retrieval practice performance should result in a greater testing effect. Empirical evidence, however, has been mixed. Although some studies showed a positive association between retrieval practice performance and the testing effect, others have shown either no relation or the reverse. In the present study, we experimentally manipulated retrieval practice performance using a retrieval-based response deadline manipulation and an encoding-based study trial manipulation. Across six experiments, the magnitude of the testing effect was independent of retrieval practice performance. However, when we aggregated the data across the experiments, participants with superior retrieval practice performance showed a greater testing effect—an individual difference. This dissociation between experimental and correlational outcomes suggests that the positive relation between retrieval practice performance and the testing effect is not causal, and indeed, simulation data showed that the correlation between retrieval practice performance and testing effect was an artifact. We discuss the challenges these findings present to existing accounts of the testing effect. Public Significance Statement: Practicing retrieval from memory can enhance learning and retention—the testing effect. However, research has produced mixed evidence about whether the benefits of retrieval depend on practice performance, with some suggesting that conditions that elicit better practice performance produce a greater testing effect, whereas others demonstrating either no effect or the opposite. In the present experiments, we showed that conditions that favored better retrieval practice performance did not produce a greater testing effect. These results challenge existing theories, and they demonstrate that students can reap similar benefits from retrieval practice regardless of whether or not learning conditions are optimized for successful retrieval practice. The amount of information we consume daily through smartphones has prompted the development of Personal Knowledge Management Systems (PKMS). However, these external memory aids can lead to overreliance and do not help to keep information in our organic memory. This paper presents the design and evaluation of MemoryMate, an app that fosters recall of saved content through interactive notifications. The app's design is based on insights from a focus group (N = 7) that inquired about people's expectations and preferences regarding the notification design. The results of a three-week in-the-wild study (N = 23) of MemoryMate suggest that notifications could trigger engagement with saved content, and two-thirds of participants felt notifications improved their memory and retention. Retrieval practice notifications with interactive tasks performed well and received positive feedback. Content priority and time since the last interaction influenced notification engagement, emphasising the need for periodic reminders to maintain user interest in saved content. Introduction: Clinical reasoning ability is one of the core competencies of physicians. It should already be trained during undergraduate medical education. At University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG), medical students can participate in formative key feature examinations in which they work on virtual patient cases in order to apply and deepen the procedural knowledge acquired in lectures and seminars. Problem and objective: While this teaching format is already established in the medical curriculum at the UMG, it has not yet been implemented in the dental curriculum at the same institution. Therefore, the current project aimed to evaluate the feasibility of formative key feature examinations in dental education. Methods: In 2022, new key feature cases focusing on dental-surgical teaching content were created. For pilot testing, the new cases were worked on by two cohorts of dental students via an online learning platform in February 2023. The students were also asked to complete an anonymous online questionnaire in order to evaluate the new teaching format. Results: Overall, the formative key feature examinations were evaluated positively by the dental students, and they demanded for further dental key feature cases. However, descriptive analyses of item characteristics as well as students' comments in the questionnaire revealed some potential for improvements, so that a few cases were partly revised afterwards. Conclusion and outlook: This project shows that formative key feature examinations are feasible in dental education and that dental students can benefit from working on virtual case scenarios. The testing effect refers to the gains in learning and retention that result from taking practice tests before the final test. Understanding the conditions under which practice tests improve learning is crucial, so four experiments were conducted with a total of 438 undergraduate students in Turkey. In the first study, students who took graded practice tests outperformed those who took them as ungraded practice. In the second study, students who took short‐answer questions before the first exam and multiple‐choice questions before the second exam scored higher on the second exam. In the third study, multiple‐choice, short‐answer and hybrid questions produced similar learning gains. In the fourth study, students who received detailed feedback immediately after class performed similarly to those who received feedback at the beginning of the next class. Effective learning strategies are crucial to the development of academic skills and information retention, especially in post secondary education where increasingly complex subjects are explored. Active recall-based strategies have been identified as particularly effective for long-term learning. This systematic review investigates the effectiveness of various active recall-based learning strategies for improving academic performance and self-efficacy in higher education students. A systematic review of peer-reviewed articles was conducted with a priori criteria by searching PubMed, ScienceDirect, JSTOR, PsycInfo, and Web of Science databases. Search results were screened/extracted and reconciled by two independent authors with the use of a piloted screening tool. Included studies were assessed for quality and risk of bias using the GRADE Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies. Three overarching study strategies were extracted for further investigation including flashcards, practice testing or retrieval practice, and concept mapping. Within each category, three additional unique search strings were searched, screened, and extracted. A qualitative analysis of the studies was provided. Among the appraised articles, flashcards were found to be popular and correlated with higher GPA and test scores. Self-testing, retrieval practice, and concept mapping were also effective but under-utilized. Concept mapping was found to boost student confidence. Medical students must be adept at critical thinking to successfully meet the learning objectives of their preclinical coursework. To encourage student success on assessments, the course director of a first-year medical physiology course emphasized the use of learning objectives that were explicitly aligned with formative assessments in class. The course director introduced the physiology discipline, learning objectives, and evidence-based methods of studying to students on the first day of class. Thereafter, class sessions started with a review of the learning objectives for that session and included active learning opportunities such as retrieval practice. The instructor provided short answer formative assessments aligned with the learning objectives, intended to help the students apply and integrate the concepts. Midsemester, students received a link to an online survey with questions on studying habits, class attendance, and student engagement. After finals, students were invited to participate in focus groups about their class experience. A qualitative researcher moderated focus groups, recorded responses, and analyzed the narrative data. Of 175 students, 95 submitted anonymous online surveys. Student engagement was significantly correlated with in-person class attendance (r = 0.26, T = 2.5, P = 0.01) and the completion of open-ended formative assessments (r = 0.33, T = 3.3, P = 0.001). Focus groups were held via videoconference. From the class, 14 students participated in 4 focus groups; focus group participants were mostly women (11 of 14) and mostly in-class attendees (13 of 14). The students in this sample valued critical thinking but misunderstood expectations on exams and few students used learning objectives to study. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: We introduced formative assessments and study techniques to first-year medical students in a physiology course. Mastery of learning objectives was emphasized as the key to success. We asked how they studied physiology through an anonymous online survey and focus group interviews. The students enjoyed physiology but had difficulty with exam expectations. This study examined putative benefits of testing and production for learning new languages. Undergraduates (N = 156) were exposed to Turkish spoken dialogues under varying learning conditions (retrieval practice, comprehension, verbal repetition) in a computer-assisted language learning session. Participants completed pre and posttests of number- and case-marking comprehension, a vocabulary test, and an explicit awareness questionnaire. Controlling for nonverbal ability and pretest scores, the retrieval-practice group performed highest overall. For number/case marking, the comprehension and retrieval-practice groups outperformed the verbal-repetition group, suggesting benefits of either recognition- or recall-based testing. For vocabulary, the verbal-repetition and retrieval-practice groups outperformed the comprehension group, indicating benefits of overt production. Case marking was easier to learn than number marking, suggesting advantages for learning word-final inflections. Explicit awareness correlated with comprehension accuracy, yet some participants demonstrated above-chance comprehension without showing awareness. Many workforce development training programmes use learning gains as a measure of programme effectiveness. However, research on K‐12 education suggests that posttest scores may be influenced by pretesting effects. Pretesting may improve posttest performance by giving learners preknowledge of posttest content. Alternatively, pretesting may enhance learning via the retrieval practice effect. Cross‐classified analysis was used to detect pretesting effects in archival data from a large‐scale agriculture workforce development programme. Data included scores from 14,302 learners, 352 trainers and 261 training centres. Results indicated that pretesting led to higher scores on posttests. Follow‐up logistic regression analyses found no effect for time lag between pretest and posttest. In addition, pretested learners did not perform better on items that were included on both forms, suggesting that score differences were due to retrieval practice effects rather than preknowledge of posttest content. This mini review provides a concise overview of recent developments in mobile-assisted vocabulary learning (MAVL) and compares its effectiveness to traditional methods in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings. The review synthesizes findings from recent empirical studies, highlighting how MAVL, particularly digital flashcards, promotes learner autonomy, engagement, and long-term vocabulary retention through features like spaced repetition and gamification. Traditional methods such as paper flashcards, while effective in structured classroom settings, lack the interactive and personalized benefits of MAVL. The review also discusses existing research gaps, including the need for further investigation into productive vocabulary use and long-term retention. Future developments in the field may include hybrid approaches that combine the strengths of both traditional and digital methods. This review aims to provide language teachers and researchers with an up-to-date understanding of MAVL and its potential to enhance EFL vocabulary acquisition.

Previous studies have consistently demonstrated that students typically favor collaborative retrieval practice over practicing individually. However, there is a gap in research regarding how EFL students specifically engage in collaborative retrieval practice compared to individual methods. This study aimed to investigate Saudi EFL students’ attitudes, perceptions, and practices regarding collaborative retrieval practice, as well as the conditions and factors influencing its implementation. A total of 195 undergraduate EFL students participated in a survey comprising 22 questions, including both open-ended free report and forced-report formats. Findings revealed that 63.6% of participants employ quizzing (collaborative retrieval practice) as a learning strategy during collaborative study sessions, with 79.5% using this approach some or most of the time. Additionally, 56% of participants found collaborative retrieval practice more enjoyable. Key term definitions emerged as the most commonly practiced material in these sessions. The study also highlighted that 70% of participants studied with one or two other peers. Furthermore, students reported active engagement in metacognitive processes, including joint decision-making and monitoring judgments regarding answer correctness and item deletion during practice sessions.
