This article excerpts a discussion about performance and climate action that took place during the annual Canadian Association for Theatre Research (CATR) conference, Partition/Ensemble 2020. Ten artists, activists, and academics share their experiences of using performance as a resource in climate-change action. They explore challenges and tactics, detail examples of theatrical climate action, and urge other artists and activists to use the tools of theatre and performance to tell the stories of climate collapse. This article reflects the groundswell of creative energy being brought to the climate crisis, providing an inspiration for others who want to use their artistic skills to support climate action. Dix artistes, activistes et universitaires rapportent leur experience de la performance comme outil dans la lutte contre les changements climatiques. Leurs difficultes et leurs tactiques sont abordees, des exemples detailles d'actions climatiques theatrales sont exposes et la necessite pour les autres artistes et activistes d'employer les outils du theatre et de la performance pour raconter les recits de la crise climatique est soulignee de maniere pressante. This article draws on the principles of grassroots climate justice movements, social movement platforms, and action networks to lay the groundwork for Green New Theatre in canada, all the while making the argument that a Green New Theatre can contribute to transitioning from an extractive and exploitative economy to a regenerative one in the face of climate crisis. It identifies some of the seeds already planted for a Green New Theatre in canada that will build momentum for the transformative change required to transition to a decarbonized, decolonized economy. Finally, it addresses how energy transition will revolutionize our existing system of theatrical production.
