1. Tropicalization of canola (Brassica napus L.): commercial hybrids show potential for cultivation in the Brazilian Cerrado

Abstract

Given its high energetic efficiency, canola (Brassica napus L.) constitutes a potential biodiesel feedstock. However, since this crop is native to temperate regions, Brazil has not yet consolidated its production. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate agro-nomic performance of canola hybrids grown in the tropical Brazilian Cerrado (15 ° 35'18 "S, 47° 43'57" W at 999 m), aiming to select promising candidates for crop expansion. Our hypothesis states that obtaining high canola yields in Cerrado conditions is possible given a favorable agronomic adaptation of the species to this environment. Eight commercial canola hybrids were evaluated for seven agronomic traits in three experiments. Data were subjected to joint ANOVA and Tukey test. Grain yield of the evaluated hybrids resulted higher than the national average, including southern plantations. Hyola 61 and Hyola 76 hybrids outperformed regarding grain yield, followed by Diamond which, in addition to high productivity, exhibited a short crop cycle, even in rainfed conditions. Given these characteristics, Diamond hybrid can be considered the best option for crop rotation system. These promising results reveal the adaptability and cultivation potential of these hybrids in the Brazilian Cerrado. Resumen: La canola es una materia prima potencial para la producción de biodiesel debido a sus altos niveles de eficiencia energética. Sin embargo, Brasil aún no ha consolidado su producción pues se desarrolla en las regiones templadas. Este estudio tuvo la hipótesis de que es posible obtener altos rendimientos de canola en condiciones de Cerrado. Así, el objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el comportamiento agronómico de los híbridos de canola en las condiciones tropicales de la Sierra brasileña - Cerrado - (15 ° 35'18 "S, 47° 43'57" W a 999 m) para seleccionar candidatos que contribuyan con la expansión del cultivo de canola en el país. Se evaluaron ocho híbridos comerciales de canola para siete carac terísticas agronómicas, en tres experimentos. Los datos obtenidos para cada variable se sometieron a análisis conjunto de varianza y se compararon las medias mediante la prueba de Tukey. El rendimiento de grano de los híbridos evaluados fue superior al promedio nacional, que incluye plantaciones solo en la región sur. Los híbridos que destacaron en productividad de grano fueron Hyola 61 y Hyola 76 seguidos por Diamond, que además de su alta productividad, tuvo un ciclo de cultivo más corto incluso en condiciones de secano. Por sus características, el híbrido Diamond puede considerarse la mejor opción para ser incluido en el sistema de rotación de cultivos. Abstract

Jatropha curcas L. is a perennial plant with great potential for biodiesel production. Thus, the aim of this study was to select J. curcas genotypes for bioenergy purpose considering multitrait, multiharvest and effective population size. To this end, a data set with 70 J. curcas families, obtained through controlled crosses, evaluated in a randomized block design, with six replications, three plants per plot, spaced at 4 × 2 m was used. The following traits were evaluated: plant height in the 2014 and 2015 crop seasons; canopy projection in the row (2015 crop season); canopy projection between rows (2015 crop season); and grain yield (2015, 2016, and 2017 harvests). The mixed model methodology was used to estimate the variance components and to predict the genetic values. Superior genotypes were selected through Multitrait index based on factor analysis and genotype-ideotype distance (FAI-BLUP index), considering the effective population size. According to this index, 98% of all additive genetic variability were summarized in three factors. By adopting the selection intensity that allows maintaining the effective population size equal to 30 (i.e., selection of 214 individuals), the predicted gains were 15.56, 21.75, 4.16, and 5.37% for the traits grain yield in the 2015 and 2016 harvests, canopy projection in the row, and canopy projection between rows in the 2015 crop season, respectively. A curva de pontos de ebulição verdadeiros (PEV) é o parâmetro mais importante na caracterização do petróleo e pode ser estimada por cromatografia gasosa de alta temperatura (HTGC). Neste trabalho, a técnica HTGC associada à regressão PLS foi utilizada para estimar a densidade API, viscosidade cinemática, ponto de fluidez, resíduo de carbono, teor de saturados e aromáticos de 98 amostras com gravidade API variando entre 11,4 e 54,0. Os modelos PLS para a densidade API, resíduo de carbono, teor de saturados e aromáticos apresentaram erro quadrático médio de predição (RMSEP) de 1,7, 0,83% m/m, 6,76% m/m e 4,05% m/m, respectivamente. Esses modelos foram aplicados em nove amostras de um campo de produção da costa brasileira e apresentaram um resultado equivalente aos modelos desenvolvidos. Os modelos para o logaritmo da viscosidade cinemática a 50 °C e ponto de fluidez apresentaram RMSEP de 0,31 e 12 °C, respectivamente. Além disso, os testes aplicados em todos os modelos para avaliação da presença de erros sistemáticos e tendências indicaram que não há evidências significativas da presença deles nos resíduos, ao nível de significância de 5%.

As atividades do produto contemplam conceitos básicos em Acústica e propõem a utilização de smartphones, placa controladora Arduino e a construção de instrumentos musicais e transdutores rudimentares. O trabalho é orientado na perspectiva de DiSessa e colaboradores para a a teoria da Mudança Conceitual. DiSessa sugere que conceitos mudam por uma constante revisão, adequação ou rejeição de elementos no todo do sistema do conhecimento. A coordenação desses fragmentos permite a construção de uma rede de inferências que é utilizada para prever ou explicar fenômenos físicos. Os processos de avaliação utilizados foram: análise das habilidades via modelo de Rasch e do senso de autoeficácia em testes objetivos; mapas mentais; atividades com redes de associações; entrevista grupo focal. Os resultados indicam ocorrência de uma evolução (no sentido de mudança) dos conceitos pelo ganho de habilidade dos estudantes no teste objetivo, pelo aumento no indício de autoeficácia dos alunos ao responder as demandas desses testes, pela apropriação de termos inerentes à linguagem científica e pela mudança na topologia e nas frequências das conexões cientificamente aceitas nas redes de associações. Os relatos dos alunos indicaram que as atividades propostas se mostraram um produto educacional viável, com destaque para os aspectos de curiosidade e interesse das atividades, mesmo diante de algumas dificuldades apresentadas.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to estimate and evaluate the general and specific combining abilities of hybrid combinations for energy biomass production, adopting the methodology of Griffing as adapted by Geraldi and Miranda Filho in evaluation cuts referring to two periods, the wet and dry seasons, and in relation to total dry matter yield (TDMY). The experiment was conducted at Pesagro Rio, located in Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, Brazil, in a randomized block design with three replicates. Crosses were performed in a partial diallel system. Treatments consisted of 10 parents, 25 hybrid combinations, and 1 control. Three evaluation cuts were made: two in the wet season and one in the dry season. The following traits were evaluated: plant height, stem diameter, leaf width, number of tillers, percentage of dry matter, dry matter yield, and TDMY. Regarding the general combining ability effects, the parents “Cameroon-Piracicaba” and “Mercker” showed outstanding positive values. Of the hybrid combinations, “Cubano Pinda”?“Mercker”, “Cameroon-Piracicaba”?“Três Rios”, “Cameroon-Piracicaba”?“Mercker 86-México”, “IAC-Campinas”?“Três Rios”, “IAC-Campinas”?“Mercker 86-México”, and “Guaçu IZ.2”?“Roxo” showed superior productive performance. Abstract

About 50 years ago cowpea was reported as a relatively minor tropical legume. However, in the last years, it has been emerging as one of the most important food legume of the 21st century (SINGH, 2010). Brazil is not out of this panorama. Brazilian agriculture is undergoing major technological changes and, in addition, globalization in agribusiness has caused impacts on the production chain of several crops, particularly those heavily dependent on the use of a large volume of agricultural inputs, mainly fertilizers and pesticides. Such crops have had a higher production cost each year. On the other hand, this situation has brought new opportunities. 14. Stability of annual biomass energy production of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) genotypes in the Northern region of the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to estimate the stability of dry biomass production of elephant grass genotypes under an annual harvest regime, in soil-climatic conditions of the Northern region of the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, and to compare methodologies for stability analyses of Yates and Cochran (YC), Plaisted and Peterson (PP), Annicchiarico (ANN), Lin and Binns (LB), Huenh (HU), and Kang and Phan (KP). A randomized block design with 83 treatments and two replicates was adopted. Four annual harvests were performed (2012-2015) and dry matter yield (DMY, t.ha -1 .year -1 ) was evaluated. Individual and combined analyses of variance for DMY revealed significant effects for genotypes, harvests, and for the genotype x harvest interaction at the probability levels of 1 and 5%. Genotypes indicated by the YC and PP methods are associated with higher stability and lower DMY. The weighting of KP with YC and PP was highly effective in associating stability with DMY. The LB and ANN methods showed strong agreement with each other and produced similar classifications as to phenotypic stability, and so we recommend using one or the other. Genotypes Elefante Cachoeiro do Itapemirim, Cuba-116, Taiwan A-46, P241 Piracicaba, Taiwan A-144, Cameroon - Piracicaba, 10 AD IRI, Guaçu/I,Z,2, Mineirão IPEACO, Taiwan A-121, IJ7125 cv EMPASC308, 903-77, Mole de Volta Grande, and Porto Rico 534-B showed high stability and DMY, standing out as promising genotypes for the soil-climatic conditions of the Northern region of the Rio de Janeiro State. The methodologies based on ANOVA and non-parametric analyses were complementary and increased reliability in the recommendation of genotypes.

Abstract

Brazil has great potential to produce bioenergy since it is located in a tropical region that receives high incidence of solar energy and presents favorable climatic conditions for such purpose. However, the use of bioenergy in the country is below its productivity potential. The aim of the current study was to select full-sib progenies and families of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum S.) to optimize phenotypes relevant to bioenergy production through mixed models (REML/BLUP). The circulating diallel-based crossing of ten elephant grass genotypes was performed. An experimental design using the randomized block methodology, with three repetitions, was set to assess both the hybrids and the parents. Each plot comprised 14-m rows, 1.40 m spacing between rows, and 1.40 m spacing between plants. The number of tillers, plant height, culm diameter, fresh biomass production, dry biomass rate, and the dry biomass production were assessed. Genetic-statistical analyses were performed through mixed models (REML/BLUP). The genetic variance in the assessed families was explained through additive genetic effects and dominance genetic effects; the dominance variance was prevalent. Families such as Capim Cana D'África x Guaçu/I.Z.2, Cameroon x Cuba-115, CPAC x Cuba-115, Cameroon x Guaçu/I.Z.2, and IAC-Campinas x CPAC showed the highest dry biomass production. The family derived from the crossing between Cana D'África and Guaçu/I.Z.2 showed the largest number of potential individuals for traits such as plant height, culm diameter, fresh biomass production, dry biomass production, and dry biomass rate. The individual 5 in the family Cana D'África x Guaçu/I.Z.2, planted in blocks 1 and 2, showed the highest dry biomass production.

Abstract

Jatropha is research target worldwide aimed at large-scale oil production for biodiesel and bio-kerosene. Its production potential is among 1200 and 1500 kg/ha of oil after the 4th year. This study aimed to estimate combining ability of Jatropha genotypes by multivariate diallel analysis to select parents and crosses that allow gains in important agronomic traits. We performed crosses in diallel complete genetic design (3 x 3) arranged in blocks with five replications and three plants per plot. The following traits were evaluated: plant height, stem diameter, canopy projection between rows, canopy projection on the line, number of branches, mass of hundred grains, and grain yield. Data were submitted to univariate and multivariate diallel analysis. Genotypes 107 and 190 can be used in crosses for establishing a base population of Jatropha, since it has favorable alleles for increasing the mass of hundred grains and grain yield and reducing the plant height. The cross 190 x 107 is the most promising to perform the selection of superior genotypes for the simultaneous breeding of these traits.

Abstract

Jatropha is a species with great potential for biodiesel production, and the knowledge on how the main agronomic traits are correlated will contribute to its improvement. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to estimate the genetic parameters of the traits: plant height at 12 and 40 months, canopy projection on the row at 12 and 40 months, canopy projection between the row at 12 and 40 months, number of branches at 40 months, grain yield, and oil yield; to verify the existence of phenotypic correlation between these traits; to verify the influence of the morphological traits on oil yield by means of path analysis; and to evaluate the relationship between the productive traits in Jatropha and the morphological traits measured at different ages. Sixty-seven half-sib families were evaluated using a completely randomized block design with two replications and five plants per plot. Analysis of variance was used to estimate the genetic value. Phenotypic correlations were given by the Pearson correlation between traits. For the canonical correlation analysis, two groups of traits were established: group I, consisting of traits of economic importance for the culture, and group II, consisting of morphological traits. Path analysis was carried out considering oil yield as the main dependent variable. Genetic variability was observed among Jatropha families. Productive traits can be indirectly selected via morphological traits due to the correlation between these two groups of traits. Therefore, canonical correlations and path analysis are two strategies that may be useful in Jatropha-breeding program when the objective is to select productive traits via morphological traits.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify parents and obtain segregating populations of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) with the potential for tolerance to water deficit. A full diallel was performed with six cowpea genotypes, and two experiments were conducted in Teresina, PI, Brazil in 2011 to evaluate 30 F2 populations and their parents, one under water deficit and the other under full irrigation. A triple-lattice experimental design was used, with six 2-m-long rows in each plot. Sixteen plants were sampled per plot. The data were subjected to analysis of variance, and general and specific combining ability estimates were obtained based on the means. Additive effects were more important than non-additive effects, and maternal inheritance had occurred. The genotypes BRS Xiquexique, Pingo de Ouro-1-2, and MNC99-510F-16-1 were the most promising for use in selection programs aimed at water deficit tolerance. The hybrid combinations Pingo de Ouro-1-2 x BRS Xiquexique, BRS Xiquexique x Santo Inácio, CNCx 698-128G x MNC99-510F-16-1, Santo Inácio x CNCx 698-128G, MNC99-510F-16-1 x BRS Paraguaçu, MNC99- 510F-16-1 x Pingo de Ouro-1-2, and MNC99-510F-16-1 x BRS Xiquexique have the potential to increase grain production and tolerate water deficit.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to select erect cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) genotypes simultaneously for high adaptability, stability, and yield grain in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil using mixed models. We conducted six trials of different cowpea genotypes in 2005 and 2006 in Aquidauana, Chapadão do Sul, Dourados, and Primavera do Leste. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks with four replications and 20 genotypes. Genetic parameters were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood/best linear unbiased prediction, and selection was based on the harmonic mean of the relative performance of genetic values method using three strategies: selection based on the predicted breeding value, having considered the performance mean of the genotypes in all environments (no interaction effect); the performance in each environment (with an interaction effect); and the simultaneous selection for grain yield, stability, and adaptability. The MNC99542F-5 and MNC99-537F-4 genotypes could be grown in various environments, as they exhibited high grain yield, adaptability, and stability. The average heritability of the genotypes was moderate to high and the selective accuracy was 82%, indicating an excellent potential for selection.
