Specialized botanical gardens such as a rose garden, or rosarium, play a significant role due to their multifunctional nature surpassing simple gene bank assembly. Thus, this study conducted a detailed analysis of a rose garden through field and desk research, SWOT analysis, and ecosystem services assessment, aiming to determine the major strengths and opportunities, as well as weaknesses and threats that can promote or constrain the establishment of the first national rosarium in Serbia. After the analysis, the need for complete green area reconstruction arose to achieve both attractiveness and usefulness. Featuring old varieties, wild species, and companies' own specific rose collections, the proposed garden has the potential to contribute major ecosystem services reflected in environmental, societal, and economic purposes. Owing to the uniqueness of the breeding program and collections created in the past decade, specific thematic parts—open field or greenhouse classroom, 'roses under the glass bell', abundant river flow, pollinators' shelter, taste garden, and scent garden—are envisaged in the future exemplary rosarium that would not be only a classroom but a showroom for interested nurseries, small-scale functional food producers, flower shops, or amateur gardeners that would become aware of new cultivars and expand their marketing and utilization. The aim of this study was to investigate the morphological traits and fragrance-related volatile compounds in three garden rose cultivars from the 'Fragrant Frayla' collection: 'Draga Frayla', 'Jelena Frayla', and 'Lenka Frayla', bred by the private breeding company Pheno Geno Roses. The roses were cultivated under open-field conditions in Temerin, Serbia, without irrigation and chemical treatments. Vegetative and generative properties were assessed in June and September 2023, while headspace volatile extraction and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were employed to identify scent-related volatiles. All three cultivars exhibited high ornamental value, with shrub heights ranging from 47 to 67 cm, semi-upright to upright growth habits, double flowers with diameters from 6.6 to 8.2 cm, and petal counts from 35.8 to 83.8. Upon sensory evaluations, 'Draga Frayla', 'Jelena Frayla', and 'Lenka Frayla' were characterized by moderately strong, strong and moderate fragrances, respectively. Volatile analysis detected the presence of phenylethyl alcohol (up to 57.31% in 'Draga Frayla'), terpenoids (a total of 28.2% for citronellol, geraniol, and nerol, found exclusively in 'Jelena Frayla'), and hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons containing fewer than 30 C-atoms were predominantly found in 'Draga Frayla' (accounting for approximately 25% of the total peak area), while those with more than 30 C-atoms were present at less than 20% in the strongly scented roses. The highest number of volatiles was detected in 'Jelena Frayla', the rose cultivar identified as the most fragrant. The results revealed a correlation between strong fragrance intensity and elevated levels of phenylethyl alcohol and alcoholic monoterpenes, whereas a diverse array of hydrocarbons, rather than their concentration, appeared to enhance scent emission. Although they have been extensively studied in many species of the genus Rosa L., garden roses' hips have largely been overlooked. To investigate their potential use in the food industry, this study evaluated five cultivars from 'Aurora' collection: 'Purple Aurora', 'Berry Bush Aurora', 'Aromatic Aurora', 'Butterfly Aurora', and 'Rugose White Aurora'. Morphological characterization, along with the assessment of the phenolic profile, vitamin C levels, and biological activities—including antioxidant and neuroprotective effects—was conducted. The fruit mass reached 5.15 g, while the mesocarp mass ranged from 3 to 4 g, resulting in a mesocarp-to-fruit ratio of over 75%. The total phenolic content ranged from 37.1 to 63.9 mg GAE/g de, while total flavonoids were present in amounts from 0.85 to 2.14 mg QE/g de. Rosehip extracts from four out of five cultivars exhibited a very high vitamin C content, reaching 2384 µg/g fw. Quinic acid and 31 phenolic compounds were found in the rosehip extract of at least one cultivar. Results indicated 'Aurora' rosehips have potent antioxidant properties and a moderate inhibitory effect on acetylcholinesterase, highlighting their potential as a source of functional food. The study of the reproduction characteristics of roses of the garden class Shrub, the definition of the dependence of the hormonal determination of explant rhizogenesis on the concentrations of phytohormones that are part of the nutrient medium, are relevant and has both scientific and practical interest. This study presents the results of studies of hormonal determination of rhizogenesis in explants of cultivars of roses of the garden class Shrub: Gärtnerfreude, Lavender Dream, Pomponella, Red Cascade, Sommerabend cultivated in vitro on nutrient medium containing growth regulators. It has been established that of the nutrient medium modified by the addition of 0.2-1.0 mg/l α-naphthylacetic acid (α-NAA), the most effective was the medium with the content of α-NAA 0.5 mg/l, the content of macro- and microelements half of the Murashige and Skoog prescriptions, and a decrease in the sucrose content to 2.0%. On this medium, the frequency of rhizogenesis averaged 61.2% for the studied cultivars. Hormonal determination of rhizogenesis and efficiency of root formation in vitro in the Shrub rose regenerants depended on the genotype of the plant: cv. Lavender Dream (66.0%) and cv. Sommerabend (67.0%) had the highest rhizogenesis ability. The use of the universal growth regulator Humifield in combination with 0.5 mg/l α-NAA contributed to an increase in the rooting rate of the studied rose cultivars up to 70.0-86.0%. Background and Objectives: Rose plant is known as a very important shrub in the ornamental horticulture sector. They are mostly propagated by asexual methods such as rooted cuttings, grafted rootstocks both on commercial and home gardening scales. While budding has long been selected as a reliable and preferred way of garden rose reproduction on selected rootstocks over the past centuries, still it faces many restrictions imposed mostly by the seasonal physiological stage of the plants. In this study, we try to determine the best time for budding garden roses under cold climatic conditions by comparing the results of three seasons and two methods of grafting. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out in the rose garden of the University of Tabriz during 2016-2017. Two cultivars of roses i.e., Rosa hybrid ‘Avalanche’ and R. hybrid ‘Blue Moon’ were selected and budded onto Natal Briar rootstocks. Three times of grafting season i.e., September, March, and June were chosen to do budding by either T-budding or chip budding method. Scions were cut out and taken from three positions of mother stems: upper, middle, and bottom parts. The budding type in September and June was T-budding (shield budding) but chip budding was applied for the grafts done in March. Grafted plants were then investigated for their success in grafting and growth (%), number of days needed to bud burst, quality of flowering stem (fresh, dry weight of stem and flowers, length and diameter of stem and flower) and other related characteristics. The factorial experimental design was used to plan and analyze data of June grafts. Results: June grafts indicated almost 100% success in budding and stem growth while those propagated in September and March. However, the time needed for bud break was the least for September and March compared to June grafts. The longest stems about 45 cm were produced in ‘Blue Moon’ budded in March, while cultivar ‘Avalanche’ generated flowers with the highest diameter (45 mm) on the shoots arising from June grafts. The percentage of flowering was obtained at 100% for the shoots originating from the upper layer of the mother stem in both cultivars, however, it decreased to about 66% for shoots grown from the lower layer in ‘Blue Moon’ cultivar. Time to flowering was the least for the ‘Avalanche’ shoots arising from the upper layer with about 33 days while it increased to about 45 days for shoots grown from the lower layer of ‘Blue Moon’ cultivar. In general, the overall quality of September grafts such as stem length, diameter, number of nodes, dry and fresh weight and SLA of flowering stems were better than the grafts done in March and September. Comparing the cultivars, it was revealed that ‘Blue Moon’ cultivar performed better than ‘Avalanche’ in terms of producing longer stems with lesser stem thorns, but ‘Avalanche’ produced the largest flowers. Conclusion: This experiment demonstrated that June time can be selected as the right season for budding garden roses in regions with similar cold winter months. Flowering stems grown in June showed lower quality when compared with the stems arising from the grafts of September or March. This could be probably induced because of the rapid release of buds from internal preventions as a consequence of spring strong growth stimulators accumulated within the buds. Comparing the time of budding shows that June budding can bring growers many benefits in terms of the fewer days needed to flower, and considering, on the other hand, the lowest risk of chilling damage on graft union as well as scion buds during the cold months of winter. Ornamental plant breeding enables the selection of cultivars with desired features from numerous genotypes; however, this process is time-consuming and resource-demanding. Aiming to establish a pre-selection protocol that can facilitate the selection of dwarf rose varieties, the connection between anatomical and histological characteristics and the vegetative growth of rose cultivars was examined. To assess the adaptive potential of the studied cultivars, intra-annual cambial dynamics were explored relative to the observed meteorological fluctuations during the growing season. The investigation included six garden rose cultivars from the 'Reka' and 'Pixie' collections, bred under semi-arid open-field conditions in Serbia. Plant height ranged from 20 to 68 cm, with differing growth habits and types. Vegetative growth was significantly correlated with the xylem/phloem ratio, the proportion of total vessel area relative to cross-sectional and xylem areas, vessel-related features, and porosity (correlation coefficients up to 0.78). Regeneration via cambial activity and the formation of false rings were observed in five of the six cultivars studied, with meteorological analysis suggesting that precipitation and temperature triggered cambial reactivation. This approach effectively targets key parameters in the selection of dwarf and climate-resilient rose cultivars, facilitating the development of reliable pre-selection criteria. The limited knowledge about the inheritance of traits in roses makes the efficient development of rose varieties challenging. In order to achieve breeding goals, the inheritance of traits needs to be explored. Additionally, for the inheritance of a trait like scent, which remains a mystery, it is crucial to know the success of parental traits in transmitting them to the next generation. Understanding this allows for accurate parental selection, ensuring sustainability in meeting market demand and providing convenience to breeders. The aim of this study was to assess the success of cross-combinations between scented old garden roses and hybrid tea roses used in cut roses in transferring their existing traits, with the objective of achieving scented cut roses. The evaluated traits included recurrent blooming, flower stem length, flower diameter, petal number, scent, and bud length of both parents and progenies. The inheritance of these traits was evaluated through theoretical evaluations, including calculating heterosis and heterobeltiosis and determining narrow-sense heritability. The combinations and examined traits were assessed using a hierarchical clustering heat map. The results of this study indicated that flower stem length, flower diameter, petal number, and bud length traits had a moderate degree of narrow-sense heritability, suggesting the influence of non-additive genes on these traits. This study observed a low success rate in obtaining progenies with scent in cross combinations between cut roses and old garden roses, indicating the challenges in obtaining scented genotypes. The discrepancy between the observed phenotypic rates and the expected phenotypic and genotypic rates, according to Punnett squares, suggests that the examined traits could be controlled by polygenic genes. The progenies were observed to exhibit a greater resemblance to old garden roses than hybrid tea roses and did not meet the commercial quality standards for cut flowers. The significant negative heterosis observed in 65.12% (petal number) and 99.61% (flower diameter) of the progenies provides strong evidence of resemblance to old garden roses. Garden roses, known as Rosa × hybrida, hold a prominent position as one of the most important and economically valuable plants in horticulture. Additionally, their products—essential oil, rose water, concrete, and concentrate—find extensive use in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food industries, due to their specific fragrances and potential health benefits. Rose flowers are rich in biologically active compounds, such as phenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and carotenoids. This study aims to investigate the potential of five new garden rose genotypes with intensely colored flowers to serve as sources of biologically active compounds. Phenolic profile was evaluated by determination of total phenolic (TPC), flavonoid (TFC), and monomeric anthocyanins (TAC) contents and LC-MS/MS analysis of selected compounds. Antioxidant activity was evaluated via DPPH and FRAP assays, neuroprotective potential via acethylcholinesterase inhibition assay, and antidiabetic activity viaα-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition assays. The flowers of investigated genotypes were rich in phenolics (TPC varied from 148 to 260 mg galic acid eq/g de, TFC from 19.9 to 59.7 mg quercetin eq/g de, and TAC from 2.21 to 13.1 mg cyanidin 3-O-glucoside eq/g de). Four out of five genotypes had higher TPC than extract of R. damascene, the most famous rose cultivar. The dominant flavonoids in all investigated genotypes were glycosides of quercetin and kaempferol. The extracts showed high antioxidant activity comparable to synthetic antioxidant BHT, very high α-glucosidase inhibitory potential, moderate neuroprotective activity, and low potential to inhibit α-amylase. Gorgonians (like corals) are important habitat-forming organisms that support a diversity of macrofauna. This study explored structural attributes of gorgonian gardens formed by rose gorgonians (Leptogorgia sp. nov.) and associated macrofaunal assemblages in Caleta Pichicuy (Central Chile). Hierarchical sampling was conducted at 20 m depth (maximum colony abundances) in order to assess spatial variability in abundance and colony attributes at two spatial scales (among sites and rocky walls). The abundance and composition of the associated vagile and sessile macrofauna were also examined using univariant (Taxa richness and Shannon index (H'e)) and multivariant approaches and were compared with adjacent bare rocky habitats. Our results showed a high abundance of gorgonians (ca. 28.9–36.5 colonies m−2) compared to other gorgonian gardens in the world. For structural attributes, our results showed smaller colonies with thicker holdfasts in more exposed sites, suggesting the influence of hydrodynamic forces on the colony morphology. Taxa richness and H'e of vagile fauna showed threefold and twofold, respectively, higher values in gorgonian gardens compared to bare walls, but no differences were observed for sessile fauna. In addition, PCoA and PERMANOVA evidenced a distinctive assemblages' composition between habitats for both vagile and sessile fauna. Correlation analyzes and dbRDA showed, however, little association between structural attributes and associated faunal assemblages (R2 = 0.06, and ca. 3–9.4% of the total variation explained, respectively). Our results constitute the first assessment of structural habitat complexity and accompanying fauna in these gorgonian gardens and establish the baseline for understanding possible future changes associated to human activities. We investigated the potential of markers associated with floral traits for parental selection in a cut rose breeding program. We analysed six Kompetitive Allele Specific PCR (KASP) markers for three important floral traits, petal length, petal number and scent, derived from experiments in a garden rose population. The six markers were applied to genotype a collection of 384 parental genotypes used for commercial cut rose breeding. We phenotyped a selection of progeny derived from pairs of parents having either high or low dosages of (contrasting) marker alleles associated with these traits. Significant differences were found between the contrasting progeny groups for each of the traits, although parents with the optimal allele dosage combinations could not always be used for the crosses. This not only supports the robustness of these marker‒trait associations but also demonstrates their potential for commercial rose breeding. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is a vibrant and expansive floral paradise located in Dallas, Texas. Modern roses (Rosa × hybrida) are among the most important and economically profitable horticultural plants. Besides their beauty and remarkable fragrance, they are also rich sources of biologically active compounds with potential health benefits. The aim of this study was to valorize the prospective of six new genotypes of edible roses to be utilized as functional foods. Rose flowers were subjected to detailed characterization of morphological traits, fragrance analysis, GC-MS analysis of aroma carriers, determination of phenolic profile and vitamin C content, and evaluation of biological activities. The results showed that all the investigated cultivars have a favorable aroma for human consumption (pear-like, strawberry-like or fruity), high contents of phenolics and vitamin C, strong antioxidant content and moderate neuroprotective activity. They are characterized by large amounts of quercetin 3-O-glycosydes and quinic acid. The genotype 'Marija Frayla' stands out from others due to facilitated flower morphology, the highest level of total phenolics (217 mg of galic acid equivalents/g of dry extract) and the strongest antioxidant activity (in the DPPH assay, IC50 = 9.24 µg/mL; and antioxidant potential in the FRAP assay was 220 mg ascorbic acid equivalents/g of dry extract), thus represents the most valuable amendment to the development of novel functional food products. The 'Eveline Wild' genotype has the highest neuroprotective activity (68.5 ng of eserine equivalents/g of dry extract), thus might be applied in the prevention of dementia. Rose propagation by cuttings is limited by substantial genotypic differences in adventitious root formation. To identify possible genetic factors causing these differences and to develop a marker for marker-assisted selection for high rooting ability, we phenotyped 95 cut and 95 garden rose genotypes in a hydroponic rooting system over 6 weeks. Data on rooting percentage after 3 to 6 weeks, root number, and root fresh mass were highly variable among genotypes and used in association mappings performed on genotypic information from the WagRhSNP 68 K Axiom SNP array for roses. GWAS analyses revealed only one significantly associated SNP for rooting percentage after 3 weeks. Nevertheless, prominent genomic regions/peaks were observed and further analysed for rooting percentage after 6 weeks, root number and root fresh mass. Some of the SNPs in these peak regions were associated with large effects on adventitious root formation traits. Very prominent were ten SNPs, which were all located in a putative phosphoinositide phosphatase SAC9 on chromosome 2 and showed very high effects on rooting percentage after 6 weeks of more than 40% difference between nulliplex and quadruplex genotypes. SAC9 was reported to be involved in the regulation of endocytosis and in combination with other members of the SAC gene family to regulate the translocation of auxin-efflux PIN proteins via the dephosphorylation of phosphoinositides. For one SNP within SAC9, a KASP marker was successfully derived and used to select genotypes with a homozygous allele configuration. Phenotyping these homozygous genotypes for adventitious root formation verified the SNP allele dosage effect on rooting. Hence, the presented KASP derived from a SNP located in SAC9 can be used for marker-assisted selection in breeding programs for high rooting ability in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Garden roses are an economically important horticultural crop worldwide, and two major fungal pathogens, black spot (Diplocarpon rosae F.A. Wolf) and cercospora leaf spot of rose (Rosisphaerella rosicola Pass.), affect both the health and ornamental value of the plant. Most studies on black spot disease resistance have focused on diploid germplasm, and little work has been performed on cercospora leaf spot resistance. With the use of newly developed software tools for autopolyploid genetics, two interconnected tetraploid garden rose F1 populations (phenotyped over the course of 3 years) were used for quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis of black spot and cercospora leaf spot resistance as well as plant defoliation. QTLs for black spot resistance were mapped to linkage groups (LGs) 1–6. QTLs for cercospora resistance and susceptibility were found in LGs 1, 4, and 5 and for defoliation in LGs 1, 3, and 5. The major locus on LG 5 for black spot resistance coincides with the previously discovered Rdr4 locus inherited from Rosa L. ‘Radbrite’ (Brite Eyes™), the common parent used in these mapping populations. This work is the first report of any QTL for cercospora resistance/susceptibility in tetraploid rose germplasm and the first report of defoliation QTL in roses. A major QTL for cercospora susceptibility coincides with the black spot resistance QTL on LG 5 (Rdr4). A major cercospora resistance QTL was found on LG 1. These populations provide a genetic resource that will further the knowledge base of rose genetics as more traits are studied. The success of rose breeding programs is low due to poor seed sets and germination rates. Determining fertile parents and cross combinations that show high compatibility could increase the effectiveness of breeding programs. In this study, three rose varieties belonging to Rosa x hybrida (Jumilia, First Red and Magnum), and two old garden rose species (Black Rose and Cabbage Rose) with known ploidy levels were reciprocally crossbred under controlled conditions to determine the successful crosses by checking fertility. The pollen germination rate (PG), crossability rate (CR), seed number per fruit (SNpF), seed production efficiency (SPE), seed germination rate (SGR), fruit weight (FW), seed weight (SW) and stigma number (SiN), etc. were recorded. Comprehensive fertility index value was calculated. Principal component analysis (PCA), correlation matrix, and hierarchical heat map were used to evaluate the data. The findings showed that old garden roses had more viable pollen than hybrid tea roses. The crossing success improved as pollen fertility increased. Also, female parent fertility improved crossing success just as much as pollen fertility. Although the pollen fertility and stigma numbers were low, some combinations had higher CR and SPE. The maximum SPE (from 8.67% to 19.46%) was determined in combinations where Black Rose was the female parent despite the lower stigma number and low pollen fertility. The highest CR was recorded in Black Rose x First Red (94.36%). All combinations in which Black Rose was used as the female parent had a more stable CR. The SNpF of combinations where hybrid rose varieties were female parents and old garden roses were pollen parents was higher than other combinations where hybrid rose varieties were both female and pollen parents. The SPE in intraspecific crosses was lower than that obtained from interspecific crosses. Moreover, the SGR decreased in combinations that produced heavier seeds. The results suggested that SPE is a more accurate parameter than SNpF in demonstrating combination success in breeding programs. Black Rose x First Red, Black Rose x Jumilia, Black Rose x Magnum and Black Rose x Cabbage Rose combinations can be used successfully as the PCA and heat map showed. Black Rose showed better performance as both seed and pollen parents according to the comprehensive fertility index. From the correlation matrix, it is understood that the number of stigmas cannot be an important criterion in parent selection. Old garden roses can be used as parents to increase the success of breeding programs. This essay examines the particularity of historical fiction as a tool for rectifying the gaps distorting our understanding of the history of enslavement. Specifically, I explore Tiya Miles' representation of enslaved women in the context of Cherokee slaveholding in her 2015 The Cherokee Rose: A Novel of Gardens and Ghosts. This novel is part of the redemptive literary tradition of Black women's liberatory narratives that, since its conception in the 1970s, has worked to redress the myriad gaps in the historical archives. Miles' concern with Cherokee participation in the history of enslavement reflects the most recent expression of the shifting historiography influencing the arc of this literary tradition. My analysis thus takes an interdisciplinary approach, demonstrating the imbrication of historical fiction and historical scholarship. Citing the example of The Cherokee Rose: A Novel of Gardens and Ghosts, this essay argues that historical fiction provides a particularly intimate representation of enslaved women's experiences under a Cherokee enslaver. Miles explores Indigenous participation without allocating blame, revealing through the complex junctures of gender and race that the power dynamic of oppressor and oppressed cannot be categorized simply by race. Breeding and selection of nursery plants require evaluation of a wide variety of traits. Characteristics that are visually scored in the field include aesthetic beauty as well as tolerance to (a)biotic stresses, among others. This work proposes methodologies based on vegetation indices and canopy height data derived from visual imagery captured using an RGB (red, green, blue) camera embedded in a drone to rank and select genotypes. This approach relies on quantitative evaluation standards that exclude breeder bias and speed up data collection. A proof of concept for nursery plants was developed in two woody ornamentals: sweet box (Sarcococca Lindl.) and garden rose (Rosa L.). This work aimed to compare methodologies and to propose how drones (unmanned aerial vehicles, UAV) and high throughput field phenotyping (HTFP) can be used in a commercial plant selection program. Data was gathered in 2019 in three well-established breeding trials, two for sweet box and one for rose. Characteristics discussed include plant architecture traits such as plant height and shape in the sweet box and rose as well as floribundity, continuous flowering and disease resistance in roses. Correlations were calculated between on-ground measurements and UAV-derived methods, obtaining significant results. Flower scent is an important trait of ornamental roses and has been an important character in the selection processes. In the present study, the composition of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by both petals and pollen of 21 garden roses (Chinensis, Climber, English rose, Floribunda, Hybrid Tea, Multiflora, Damascena, Musk rose, Polyantha, Rugosa and Shrub) was investigated through the GC-MS Static Headspace method. A total of 19 different VOCs were detected, and for each identified compound, an odorant description was included. In petals, the most common VOCs were 2-phenylethanol, methyl eugenol, and hexanal, present in 95%, 86% and 86% of garden roses, respectively. While, in pollen were methyl eugenol, methyl-1-butanol, and hexanal (present in 100%, 95%, and 90% of the genotypes, respectively), even if in lower content. The comparison between the petals and pollen profile shown that, even with less quantity, the main compounds characterizing the scent of the studied roses are present both in the petals and in the pollen (19 and 17 compounds, respectively), with different magnitude. Overall, the content of VOCs emitted by petals was more than five times higher than that produced by pollen.
