Significance Body reorganization in eels during gametogenesis can induce undesired side effects with possible pathological significance. This study provides analytical evidence for the maternal transfer of toxic metals from soft and hard tissues to the ovaries of mature females. By illustrating the metabolic fluxes and fate of mobilized minerals and metals in the fishes’ bodies during sexual development, we have identified a previously unreported aspect of anthropogenic impact on endangered anguillid eels. Furthermore, our findings suggest a physiologically connected interplay of energy metabolism and bone resorption in the reproductive strategy of eels. Consequently, we propose the eel as an interesting model organism for investigating the physiological pathways connecting lipid metabolism and mineral retention, known also to affect the health state of humans., During their once-in-a-lifetime transoceanic spawning migration, anguillid eels do not feed, instead rely on energy stores to fuel the demands of locomotion and reproduction while they reorganize their bodies by depleting body reserves and building up gonadal tissue. Here we show how the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) breaks down its skeleton to redistribute phosphorus and calcium from hard to soft tissues during its sexual development. Using multiple analytical and imaging techniques, we characterize the spatial and temporal degradation of the skeletal framework from initial to final gonadal maturation and use elemental mass ratios in bone, muscle, liver, and gonadal tissue to determine the fluxes and fates of selected minerals and metals in the eels’ bodies. We find that bone loss is more pronounced in females than in males and eventually may reach a point at which the mechanical stability of the skeleton is challenged. P and Ca are released and translocated from skeletal tissues to muscle and gonads, leaving both elements in constant proportion in remaining bone structures. The depletion of internal stores from hard and soft tissues during maturation-induced body reorganization is accompanied by the recirculation, translocation, and maternal transfer of potentially toxic metals from bone and muscle to the ovaries in gravid females, which may have direct deleterious effects on health and hinder the reproductive success of individuals of this critically endangered species.

Declining European eel (Anguilla anguilla) recruitment has focused attention on conservation of potential spawners leaving continental waters. Fecundity of wild, seaward-migrating silver-phase eels was shown to be size-related and higher than previously reported from artificial maturation experiments. Reliable information on fecundity is essential for stock modelling and future development of eel management policies.

† Background Floral morphology, particularly the angle of lip attachment to the column, has historically been the fundamental character used in establishing generic limits in subtribe Oncidiinae (Orchidaceae), but it has also been long recognized that reliance on this character alone has produced a highly artificial set of genera. In essence, lip/column relationships reflect syndromes associated with pollinator preferences; most genera of Oncidiinae as previously defined have consisted of a single floral type. Here, the degree to which this has influenced generic delimitation in Brazilian members of the largest genus of Oncidiinae, Oncidium, which previous molecular (DNA) studies have demonstrated to be polyphyletic, is evaluated. † Methods Phylogenetic analyses of the following multiple DNA regions were used: the plastid psbA-trnH intergenic spacer, matK exon and two regions of ycf1 exon and nuclear ribosomal DNA, comprised of the two internal transcribed spacers, ITS1 and ITS2, and the 5.8S gene. Results from all regions analysed separately indicated highly similar relationships, so a combined matrix was analysed. † Key Results Nearly all species groups of Brazilian Oncidium are only distantly related to the type species of the genus, O. altissimum, from the Caribbean. There are two exceptions to this geographical rule: O. baueri is related to the type group and O. orthostates, an isolated species that lacks the defining tabula infrastigmata of Oncidium, is not exclusively related to any previously described genus in the subtribe. Several well-supported subclades can be observed in these results, but they do not correspond well to sections of Oncidium as previously circumscribed or to segregate genera as defined by several recent authors. In spite of their floral differences, these groups of Oncidium, formerly treated as O. sections Barbata, Concoloria pro parte, Crispa, Ranifera, Rhinocerotes, Rostrata (only O. venustum), Synsepala, Verrucituberculata pro parte and Waluewa, form a well-supported clade with Gomesa (including Rodrigueziella and Rodrigueziopsis) embedded in it. Two often recognized segregate genera, Baptistonia and Ornithophora, and the recently described Carriella are also embedded within the Brazilian clade. The level of variation within major subclades of the Gomesa clade is low and similar to that observed within other genera of Oncidiinae. † Conclusions Convergence on a stereotypical syndrome of floral traits associated with pollination by oilcollecting bees has resulted in these characters not being reliable for producing monophyletic taxa, and the genus Oncidium, defined by these characters, is grossly polyphyletic. Vegetative and a few floral/ inflorescence characters link these taxa with a mainly Brazilian distribution, and they were all transferred to Gomesa on this basis rather than separated from Gomesa based on their floral differences, which we hypothesize to be simple shifts in pollination strategies. Other authors have described a large number of new genera for these former members of Oncidium, but most of these are not supported by the results presented here (i.e. they are not monophyletic). A new genus, Nohawilliamsia, is described for O. orthostates because it does not fit in any currently recognized genus and is only distantly related to any other member of Oncidiinae.

Palm leaf sheaths provide shelter to numerous groups of vertebrates and invertebrates, both in dry land and periodically flooded environments. Palm leaf sheaths can be considered strategic microhabitats that can be determinant of the survival of ant species inhabiting Amazon islands that undergo periodic flooding. In this work we studied the existence of positive associations between ant and plant communities of the Arecaceae family in Amazon forests to test the hypotheses that (1) taller palm trees have higher ant species richness; and (2) different palm species were occupied by different ant species richness. Palm tree height did not affect significantly ant species richness. Ant species richness responded to palm species, with a higher number of ant species on Scheelea rostrata Mart. than on the other palm species. The periodic flooding can explain the lack of relationship between plant height and ant species richness. With the loss of the habitats for nesting and foraging, the ant species use the palm leaf sheaths for nesting and the other parts of the plant for foraging. The impossibility of moving to other plants caused by the flooding may also explain why the arboreal ant species richness was not influenced by palm tree height. The palm species can be a determinant factor of ant species richness nesting in the palm leaf sheaths. This might be due to the intrinsic characteristics of the palm species, such as morphological and phenological characteristics. Our study demonstrated that palm identity contributed to ant species richness, besides showing that periodic flooding probably determines ant species richness instead of palm tree height. Thus, we suggest that other studies focus on the importance of other variables of palm leaves for ant species richness and colony size (number of individuals), such as leaf number, sheath number and sheath length.

SUMMARYOne of the mysteries of the animal kingdom is the long-distance migration(5000–6000 km) of the European eel Anguilla anguilla L. from the coasts of Europe to its spawning grounds in the Sargasso Sea. The only evidence for the location of the spawning site of the European eel in the Sargasso Sea is the discovery by Johannes Schmidt at the beginning of the previous century of the smallest eel larvae (leptocephali) near the Sargasso Sea. For years it has been questioned whether the fasting eels have sufficient energy reserves to cover this enormous distance. We have tested Schmidt's theory by placing eels in swim tunnels in the laboratory and allowing them to make a simulated migration of 5500 km. We find that eels swim 4–6 times more efficiently than non-eel-like fish. Our findings are an important advance in this field because they remove a central objection to Schmidt's theory by showing that their energy reserves are, in principle, sufficient for the migration. Conclusive proof of the Sargasso Sea theory is likely to come from satellite tracking technology.

Glass eel (Anguilla anguilla) upstream migration was studied in the River Tiber estuary to obtain a better understanding of spatial and temporal migration dynamics within the season of ascent. Using data from glass eel fisheries, time series analysis of daily catches per unit of effort revealed a fortnightly cycle that can be related to invasion waves possibly corresponding to tidal currents. The amplitude of these waves appeared to correspond to the tidal area of the estuary. Furthermore, glass eels apparently had a delay in this area before resuming upstream migration.
