Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is one of the leading causes of end-stage renal disease worldwide and significantly increases the risk of premature death due to cardiovascular diseases. Elevated urinary albumin levels are an important clinical feature of DKD. Effective control of albuminuria not only delays glomerular filtration rate decline but also markedly reduces cardiovascular disease risk and all-cause mortality. New drugs for treating DKD proteinuria, including sodium-glucose cotransporter two inhibitors, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, and endothelin receptor antagonists, have shown significant efficacy. Auxiliary treatment with proprietary Chinese medicine has also yielded promising results; however, it also faces a broader scope for development. The mechanisms by which these drugs treat albuminuria in patients with DKD should be described more thoroughly. The positive effects of combination therapy with two or more drugs in reducing albuminuria and protecting the kidneys warrant further investigation. Therefore, this review explores the pathophysiological mechanism of albuminuria in patients with DKD, the value of clinical diagnosis and prognosis, new progress and mechanisms of treatment, and multidrug therapy in patients who have type 2 diabetic kidney disease, providing a new perspective on the clinical diagnosis and treatment of DKD.

Abstract Objective Benzene, ethylbenzene, meta/para-xylene, and ortho-xylene, collectively referred to as benzene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BEX), constitute the main components of volatile organic aromatic compounds (VOACs) and can have adverse effects on human health. The relationship between exposure to BEX and hearing loss (HL) in the adult U.S. population was aimed to be assessed. Methods Cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for the years 2003–2004, 2011–2012, and 2015–2016 were analyzed. This dataset included complete demographic characteristics, pure-tone audiometry measurements, and volatile organic compound detection data from the NHANES database. A weighted multivariate logistic regression model was employed to investigate the associations between blood BEX concentrations HL, low-frequency hearing loss (SFHL), and high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL). Results 2174 participants were included, with weighted prevalence rates of HL, SFHL, and HFHL being 46.81%, 25.23%, and 45.86%, respectively. ObjectivesThe study aims to systematically identify the alterations in gut microbiota that observed in gastric cancer through comprehensive assessment of case–control studies.MethodsThe systematic literature search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science was conducted to identify case–control studies that compared the microbiomes of individuals with and without gastric cancer. Quality of included studies was evaluated with the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOS). Meta-analyses utilized a random-effects model, and subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed to assess study heterogeneity. All data analyses were performed using the “metan” package in Stata 17.0, and the results were described using log odds ratios (log ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs).ResultsA total of 33 studies involving 4,829 participants were eligible for analysis with 29 studies provided changes in α diversity and 18 studies reported β diversity. Meta-analysis showed that only the Shannon index demonstrated statistical significance for α-diversity [−5.078 (−9.470, −0.686)]. No significant differences were observed at the phylum level, while 11 bacteria at genus-level were identified significant changed, e.g., increasing in Lactobacillus [5.474, (0.949, 9.999)] and Streptococcus [5.095, (0.293, 9.897)] and decreasing in Porphyromonas and Rothia with the same [−8.602, (−11.396, −5.808)]. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the changes of 9 bacterial genus were robust. Subgroup analyses on countries revealed an increasing abundance of Helicobacter and Streptococcus in Koreans with gastric cancer, whereas those with gastric cancer from Portugal had a reduced Neisseria. Regarding the sample sources, the study observed an increase in Lactobacillus and Bacteroides in the gastric mucosa of people with gastric cancer, alongside Helicobacter and Streptococcus. However, the relative abundance of Bacteroides decreased compared to the non-gastric cancer group, which was indicated in fecal samples.ConclusionThis study identified robust changes of 9 bacterial genus in people with gastric cancer, which were country-/sample source-specific. PurposeThe exposure of Ethylene oxide (EO) is linked to systemic inflammatory response and various cardiovascular risk factors. Hemoglobin’s binding to ethylene oxide (HbEO) was used to measure serum EO level. This research aims to explore the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and HbEO, and between HbEO and components of metabolic syndrome.MethodThis research included 1842 participants from 2013 to 2020 in National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. Weighted logistic regression models were used to analyze the relationship between HbEO and metabolic syndrome risk, using odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). The restricted cubic spline plot explores whether there is a dose-response relationship between HbEO and MetS risk. Subgroup analysis was performed to analyze study heterogeneity.ResultsSignificant differences were found in gender, educational level, marital status, diabetes status and hypertension among different groups (P < 0.001, P = 0.007, P = 0.003, P < 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). The serum HbEO level exhibited positive correlation with metabolic syndrome risk in Q2 level (OR=1.64, 1.04~2.48), Q3 level (OR=1.99, 1.29~3.08), and Q4 level (OR=2.89, 1.92~4.34). The dose-response association suggested a possible linear association between serum HbEO and metabolic syndrome risk (P-overall=0.0359, P-non-linear=0.179). Oil palm is a versatile oil crop with numerous applications. Significant progress has been made in applying histological techniques in oil palm research in recent years. Whole genome sequencing of oil palm has been carried out to explain the function and structure of the order genome, facilitating the development of molecular markers and the construction of genetic maps, which are crucial for studying important traits and genetic resources in oil palm. Transcriptomics provides a powerful tool for studying various aspects of plant biology, including abiotic and biotic stresses, fatty acid composition and accumulation, and sexual reproduction, while proteomics and metabolomics provide opportunities to study lipid synthesis and stress responses, regulate fatty acid composition based on different gene and metabolite levels, elucidate the physiological mechanisms in response to abiotic stresses, and explain intriguing biological processes in oil palm. This paper summarizes the current status of oil palm research from a multi-omics perspective and hopes to provide a reference for further in-depth research on oil palm.

Australian finger lime (Citrus australasica L.) has become increasingly popular due to its potent antioxidant capacity and health-promoting benefits. This study aimed to determine the chemical composition, antibacterial characteristics, and mechanism of finger lime extract. The finger lime extracts were obtained from the fruit of the Australian finger lime by the ethanol extraction method. The antibacterial activity of the extract was examined by detecting the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for two Gram-positive and four Gram-negative bacterial strains in vitro, as well as by assessing variations in the number of bacteria for Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas) in vivo. GC-MS analysis was used to identify the antibacterial compounds of the extract. The antibacterial mechanisms were investigated by assessing cell permeability and membrane integrity, and the bacterial morphology was examined using scanning electron microscopy. The extract demonstrated significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Gram-negative bacterial species, such as Escherichia coli, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Xanthomonas campestris, Xanthomonas citri, and CLas. Among the six strains evaluated in vitro, B. subtilis showed the highest susceptibility to the antimicrobial effects of finger lime extract. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extract against the tested microorganisms varied between 500 and 1000 μg/mL. In addition, the extract was proven effective in suppressing CLas in vivo, as indicated by the lower CLas titers in the treated leaves compared to the control. A total of 360 compounds, including carbohydrates (31.159%), organic acid (30.909%), alcohols (13.380%), polyphenols (5.660%), esters (3.796%), and alkaloids (0.612%), were identified in the extract. We predicted that the primary bioactive compounds responsible for the antibacterial effects of the extract were quinic acid and other polyphenols, as well as alkaloids. The morphology of the tested microbes was altered and damaged, leading to lysis of the cell wall, cell content leakage, and cell death. Based on the results, ethanol extracts from finger lime may be a fitting substitute for synthetic bactericides in food and plant protection.

As an important part of the boundary conditions on both sides of the high-speed railway track–bridge system, the seismic response of the subgrade structure is different from that of the bridge structure. This difference has become increasingly significant with the widespread adoption of continuous welded rail technology in bridge construction. Therefore, investigating the seismic response of the bridge system, with a specific focus on the longitudinal constraint effects of the subsequent subgrade track structure, is of paramount importance. Utilizing finite element software, two distinct bridge models are developed: one incorporating the subsequent subgrade track structure and another excluding it. Through nonlinear time history analysis under varying seismic intensities, it is demonstrated that the longitudinal constraint of the subsequent subgrade track structure mitigates the longitudinal displacements and internal forces in critical components of the high-speed railway track–bridge system. Concurrently, acknowledging the heightened complexity and cost associated with post-earthquake repairs of the bridge structure compared to subgrade structure, this study uses a risk transfer connecting beam device. This device can redirect seismic damage from bridge structure to subgrade structure, thereby potentially reducing post-seismic repair expenses for the bridge.

BackgroundIncreased arterial stiffness and low handgrip strength (HGS) are associated with poor health outcomes and are a severe health risk for older adults. However, there is limited evidence and mixed results on whether there is an association between them. Therefore, this study focused on the association between arterial stiffness and HGS in relatively healthy older adults in Beijing, China.MethodsIn 2016, 2,217 adult volunteers were recruited in Beijing. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and the ankle-brachial index were measured using an automatic vascular profiling system. Carotid artery intima-media thickness and common carotid artery-internal diameter (CCAID) were evaluated using Doppler ultrasound, and HGS was measured with a dynamometer. Low HGS was determined using the Asian Sarcopenia Working Group 2019 criteria. Multivariate linear and logistic regressions evaluated the relationship between arterial stiffness and HGS.ResultsUltimately, 776 relatively healthy older adults (mean age 69.05 ± 6.46 years) were included. IntroductionThere are no standardized assessment criteria for selecting nutritional risk screening tools or indicators to assess reduced muscle mass (RMM) in the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria. We aimed to compare the consistency of different GLIM criteria with Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) and protein-energy wasting (PEW).MethodsIn this study, nutritional risk screening 2002 first four questions (NRS-2002-4Q), Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002), Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST), and Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short-Form (MNA-SF) tools were used as the first step of nutritional risk screening for the GLIM. The RMM is expressed using different metrics. The SGA and PEW were used to diagnose patients and classify them as malnourished and non-malnourished. Kappa (κ) tests were used to compare the concordance between the SGA, PEW, and GLIM of each combination of screening tools.ResultsA total of 157 patients were included. Patients with Chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 1–3 accounted for a large proportion (79.0%). The prevalence rates of malnutrition diagnosed using the SGA and PEW were 18.5% and 19.7%, respectively. The prevalence of GLIM-diagnosed malnutrition ranges from 5.1% to 37.6%, depending on the different screening methods for nutritional risk and the different indicators denoting RMM. In this paper, we propose a stochastic delay mutualistic model of leaf-cutter ants with stage structure and their fungus garden, in which we explore how the discrete delay and white noise affect the dynamic of the population system. The existence and uniqueness of global positive solution are proved, and the asymptotic behaviours of the stochastic model around the positive equilibrium point of the deterministic model are also investigated. Furthermore, the sufficient conditions for the persistence of the population are established. Finally, some numerical simulations are performed to show the effect of random environmental fluctuation on the model.

The purpose of this paper is to leverage the advantages of physics-informed neural network (PINN) and convolutional neural network (CNN) by using Legendre multiwavelets (LMWs) as basis functions to approximate partial differential equations (PDEs). We call this method Physics-Informed Legendre Multiwavelets CNN (PiLMWs-CNN), which can continuously approximate a grid-based state representation that can be handled by a CNN. PiLMWs-CNN enable us to train our models using only physics-informed loss functions without any precomputed training data, simultaneously providing fast and continuous solutions that generalize to previously unknown domains. In particular, the LMWs can simultaneously possess compact support, orthogonality, symmetry, high smoothness, and high approximation order. Compared to orthonormal polynomial (OP) bases, the approximation accuracy can be greatly increased and computation costs can be significantly reduced by using LMWs. We applied PiLMWs-CNN to approximate the damped wave equation, the incompressible Navier–Stokes (N-S) equation, and the two-dimensional heat conduction equation. The experimental results show that this method provides more accurate, efficient, and fast convergence with better stability when approximating the solution of PDEs.

Male sterility is a valuable trait for watermelon breeding, as watermelon hybrids exhibit obvious heterosis. However, the underlying regulatory mechanism is still largely unknown, especially regarding the related non-coding genes. In the present study, approximately 1035 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), as well as 80 DE-lncRNAs and 10 DE-miRNAs, were identified, with the overwhelming majority down-regulated in male-sterile floral buds. Enrichment analyses revealed that the general phenylpropanoid pathway as well as its related metabolisms was predicted to be altered in a mutant compared to its fertile progenitor. Meanwhile, the conserved genetic pathway DYT1-TDF1-AMS-MS188-MS1, as well as the causal gene ClAMT1 for the male-sterile mutant Se18, was substantially disrupted during male reproductive development. In addition, some targets of the key regulators AMS and MS188 in tapetum development were also down-regulated at a transcriptional level, such as ABCG26 (Cla004479), ACOS5 (Cla022956), CYP703A2 (Cla021151), PKSA (Cla021099), and TKPR1 (Cla002563). Considering lncRNAs may act as functional endogenous target mimics of miRNAs, competitive endogenous RNA networks were subsequently constructed, with the most complex one containing three DE-miRNAs, two DE-lncRNAs, and 21 DEGs. Collectively, these findings not only contribute to a better understanding of genetic regulatory networks underlying male sterility in watermelon, but also provide valuable candidates for future research.

Single-atom catalysts based on metal–N–C constituents facilitate oxygen reduction reaction kinetics due to super-high atomic utilization efficiency. However, conventional isolated atoms suffer from coordination symmetry and make less use of electron interaction between adjacent metal sites, which severely impedes its electrocatalytic activity. In response, we creatively issue a feasible potassium hydroxide clipping strategy through breaking up partial Co–N bonding and reconstructing Co–Co coordination, thus simultaneously implanting abundant Co atomic clusters and Co single atoms (SAs) on the surface of covalent organic framework (COF)-derived N-doped carbon nanospheres, which are intertwined by surrounding carbon nanotube (CNT) networks. This elaborately designed CoAC-SAs/N–C@CNT catalyst combines the benefits of the asymmetrically coordinated Co–N2 configuration and Co–Co electronic interaction, which exert great influence on local atomic microenvironment of metal sites and, thus, efficiently modulate the electronic structure. Then, the optimized d-band center of Co centers contributes to weakening oxygen intermediate adsorption and to reducing the rate-determining step energy barrier. Meanwhile, because of the unique surface chelation mechanism between COF matrix and Co cations, the as-optimized Co centers are homogenously stabilized on the carbon outermost shell, further maximizing active sites efficiency. As expected, the CoAC-SAs/N–C@CNT catalyst harvests superior oxygen reduction reaction catalytic kinetics in alkaline medium, surpassing the commercial Pt/C catalyst.

Using sample firms from eight energy-intensive industries included in the State Council of China’s Notice on the Pilot Work of Carbon Emission Trading from 2015 to 2019, this study examines the relationship between environmental legitimacy pressure and impression management of carbon information disclosure, and explores the moderating effect of political connection on this relationship. The baseline results show that environmental legitimacy pressure is positively associated with impression management of carbon information disclosure, and political connection moderates this relationship, that is, the positive association between environmental legitimacy pressure and impression management of carbon information disclosure in politically-connected firms is stronger than that in non-politically-connected firms. The results are robust to various sensitivity tests. Further analyses show that (i) the positive association between environmental legitimacy pressure and impression management of carbon information disclosure in non-state owned enterprises (non-SOEs) is stronger than that in SOEs, (ii) firms facing higher negative environmental legitimacy pressure have stronger motivation to conduct impression management of carbon information disclosure, (iii) firms facing environmental legitimacy pressure conduct both selective disclosure and expressive manipulation but they have stronger motivation to conduct expressive manipulation. This study extends the literature on impression management of carbon information disclosure. The findings in this study provide policy implications not only for China but also for countries with large carbon emission.

Based on a sample of Chinese publicly listed firms in eight high energy-consuming industries from 2015 to 2019, this study investigates the relationship between the intensity of product market competition and carbon disclosure and explores the moderating effect of earnings pressure and environmental legitimacy pressure on this relationship. Using content analysis to construct an integrated measure of corporate carbon disclosure, we find that the intensity of product market competition is negatively associated with carbon disclosure. The negative relationship between the intensity of product market competition and carbon disclosure is more pronounced among firms facing fewer earnings pressures and greater environmental legitimacy pressures. The additional tests also show that the effect of product market competition on carbon disclosure is more pronounced among state-owned firms and large firms. Our results are robust to various robustness tests. This study extends the literature on carbon disclosure and has important implications for different stakeholders to promote corporate climate-related disclosure in China.

Abstract Background Renal calyx diverticulum refers to a cystic lesion covered with the transitional epithelium in the renal parenchyma. Although there is no clear evidence that calyx diverticulum can cause hypertension, there exists a close association between the two, and there are few related reports. Herein, we reported the case of a child with renal calyx diverticulum complicated with hypertension and summarized the diagnosis and treatment. Case presentation Physical examination of the patient, an 11-year-old child, revealed a left renal cyst with hypertension (155/116 mmHg). There were no related symptoms. Routine urine and blood biochemical examinations showed no abnormalities. Imaging revealed left renal cyst compression causing the hypertension. She underwent renal cyst fluid aspiration and injection of a sclerosing agent into the capsule, but her blood pressure increased again 3 days postoperatively. Color Doppler ultrasonography showed that the size of the left renal cyst was the same as that preoperatively. To further confirm the diagnosis, cystoscopic retrograde ureteropyelography was performed to confirm the diagnosis of renal calyx diverticulum. Subsequently, renal calyceal diverticulum resection and calyx neck enlargement were performed. The operation went smoothly and the blood pressure returned to normal postoperatively. No abnormalities were noted at the 7-month postoperative follow-up. Conclusion There exists an association between renal calyx diverticulum and hypertension. Therefore, hypertension can be considered a surgical indication for renal calyx diverticulum. Moreover, renal calyceal diverticulum in children can be easily misdiagnosed as a renal cyst. Therefore, it is important to be vigilant to prevent a series of complications, such as postoperative urine leakage, in such cases.

Huanglongbing (HLB), caused by the Candidatus Liberibacter spp., is the most devastating disease in the citrus industry. HLB significantly affects and alters the microbial community structure or potential function of the microbial community of leaves and roots. However, it is unknown how the microbial community structure of the pericarp with different pigments is affected by Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas). This study identified the enriched taxa of the microbial community in the citrus pericarp with normal or abnormal pigment and determine the effects of HLB on the pericarp microbial community using 16S rRNA-seq. The alpha and beta diversity and composition of microbial communities were significantly different between normal and abnormal pigment pericarp tissues of ripe fruits infected by CLas. Firmicutes, Actinobacteriota, Bacteroidota, Acidobacteriota, and Desulfobacterota dominated the pericarp microbiota composition in WDYFs (whole dark yellow fruits) samples. The relative abundance of most genera in WDYFs was higher than 1%, such as Burkholderia, and Pelomonas. However, with the exception of the HLB pathogen, the relative abundance of most genera in the abnormal-colored pericarp samples was less than 1%. CLas decreased the relative abundance of pericarp taxonomic. The predicted function of microbial was more plentiful and functional properties in the WDYF sample, such as translation, ribosomal structure and biogenesis, amino acid transport and metabolism, energy production and conversion, and some other clusters of orthologous groups (COG) except for cell motility. The results of this study offer novel insights into understanding the composition of microbial communities of the CLas-affected citrus pericarps and contribute to the development of biological control strategies for citrus against Huanglongbing.

Abstract Background We admitted a child with a duplex kidney combined with preoperative rupture of nephroblastoma and used this case to discuss the clinical features and treatment of this disease. Case presentation We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of a 5-year-old girl with preoperative duplex kidney rupture combined with inferior nephroblastoma who was admitted to the Fourth Hospital of Baotou. In addition, we reviewed the relevant literature. The patient’s details were as follows: weight, 17 kg; height, 108 cm; and body surface area, 0.7 m2. Abdominal ultrasound for abdominal pain revealed the presence of a left-sided renal mass; enhanced abdominal computed tomography further confirmed it to be a left-sided duplex kidney measuring approximately 6 × 5 × 5 cm, with a rupture originating from the lower kidney. The PubMed database was searched from 2010 to 2020 for the terms “Wilms’ tumor” and “Duplex” and “Wilms’ tumor” and “Rupture.” The treatment plan was preoperative chemotherapy (vincristine/dactinomycin, VA regimen) + left kidney tumor radical surgery + postoperative chemotherapy (actinomycin-D/VCR/doxorubicin, AVD regimen). Postoperative pathology revealed an International Society of Pediatric Oncology intermediate-risk stage-3 nephroblastoma (mixed type) in the left kidney. Literature review was performed with 71 cases meeting the set criteria with an aim to analyze and summarize the clinical characteristics and treatment of patients with ruptured nephroblastoma and duplex kidney combined with nephroblastoma. Conclusions To our knowledge, no previous studies have reported preoperative duplex kidney combined with nephroblastoma rupture. In patients with this condition, preoperative chemotherapy is recommended when the vital signs are stable and tumor resection can be performed after the tumor has shrunk to prevent secondary spread. If the patient’s vital signs are unstable, emergency exploratory surgery is needed. If the nephroblastoma rupture is old and limited, surgery can be performed when the tumor size is small.

Abstract Background Mandarin ‘Shatangju’ is susceptible to Huanglongbing (HLB) and the HLB-infected fruits are small, off-flavor, and stay-green at the maturity period. To understand the relationship between pericarp color and HLB pathogen and the effect mechanism of HLB on fruit pericarp coloration, quantitative analyses of HLB bacterial pathogens and carotenoids and also the integrative analysis of metabolome and transcriptome profiles were performed in the mandarin ‘Shatangju’ variety with four different color fruits, whole green fruits (WGF), top-yellow and base-green fruits (TYBGF), whole light-yellow fruits (WLYF), and whole dark-yellow fruits (WDYF) that were infected with HLB. Results the HLB bacterial population followed the order WGF > TYBGF > WLYF > WDYF. And there were significant differences between each group of samples. Regarding the accumulation of chlorophyll and carotenoid, the chlorophyll-a content in WGF was the highest and in WDYF was the lowest. The content of chlorophyll-b in WGF was significantly higher than that in other three pericarps. There were significant differences in the total content of carotenoid between each group. WGF and TYBGF pericarps were low in phytoene, γ-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin and apocarotenal, while other kinds of carotenoids were significantly higher than those in WDYF. And WLYF was only short of apocarotenal. We comprehensively compared the transcriptome and metabolite profiles of abnormal (WGF, TYBGF and WLYF) and normal (WDYF, control) pericarps. In total, 2,880, 2,782 and 1,053 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 121, 117 and 43 transcription factors were identified in the three comparisons, respectively. The qRT-PCR confirmed the expression levels of genes selected from transcriptome. Additionally, a total of 77 flavonoids and other phenylpropanoid-derived metabolites were identified in the three comparisons. Most (76.65 %) showed markedly lower abundances in the three comparisons. The phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway was the major enrichment pathway in the integrative analysis of metabolome and transcriptome profiles. Conclusions Synthesizing the above analytical results, this study indicated that different color pericarps were associated with the reduced levels of some carotenoids and phenylpropanoids derivatives products and the down-regulation of proteins in flavonoids, phenylpropanoids derivatives biosynthesis pathway and the photosynthesis-antenna proteins.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) within carbon matrix became one of the most promising alternatives to noble metal-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Although SACs have significant benefits in reducing the total catalyst cost, it also has the disadvantages of weak interaction between atoms and poor stability. Hence, there is still much room for improvement for the catalyst activity. In response, we designed a Fe-Co-Pt ternary metal single atom catalyst anchored on covalent organic framework (COF)-derived N-doped carbon nanospheres (Pt, Fe, Co/N-C). Due to effective charge transfer between Pt single atom and neighboring Fe-Co components, an intense electron interaction can be established within the Pt, Fe, Co/N-C catalyst. This is beneficial for enhancing charge transfer efficiency, modulating d electronic structure of Pt center and weakening oxygen intermediate adsorption, thus distinctly accelerating ORR catalytic kinetics. As expected, the half-wave potential of Pt, Fe, Co/N-C was 0.845 V, much higher than those of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (0.835 V), Pt/N-C (0.79 V) and Fe, Co/N-C (0.81 V) counterparts. Moreover, the Pt, Fe, Co/N-C catalyst demonstrated much-improved cycling stability and methanol tolerance.

Sustainable control of mosquitoes, vectors of many pathogens and parasites, is a critical challenge. Chemical insecticides are gradually losing their effectiveness because of development of resistance, and plant metabolites are increasingly being recognized as potential alternatives to chemical insecticides. This study aimed to analyze the main components of Perilla frutescens essential oil (PE-EO), investigate the specific activity of PE-EO as a botanical insecticide and mosquito repellent, and explore whether its main constituents are potential candidates for further research. The larvicidal activity assay showed that LC50 of PE-EO and 2-hexanoylfuran was 45 and 25 mg/L, respectively. In the ovicidal activity assay, both 120 mg/L PE-EO and 80 mg/L 2-hexanoylfuran could achieve 98% egg mortality. Moreover, PE-EO and 2-hexanoylfuran showed repellency and oviposition deterrence effects. Notably, 10% PE-EO maintained a high rate of protection for 360 min. Although PE-EO and its main component had certain toxic effects on zebrafish, no significant harmful effects were detected in human embryonic kidney cells. Therefore, perilla essential oil is an effective agent for mosquito control at several life stages and that its main component, 2-hexanoylfuran, is a potential candidate for developing novel plant biopesticides.

It is critical and challenging to develop high performance transition metal phosphides (TMPs) electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to address fossil energy shortages. Herein, we report the synthesis of Co2P embedded in N-doped porous carbon (Co2P@N-C) via a facile one-step strategy. The obtained catalyst exhibits a lower overpotential of 352 mV for OER at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 84.6 mV dec−1, with long-time reliable stability. The excellent electrocatalytic performance of Co2P@N-C can be mainly owed to the synergistic effect between the Co2P and highly conductive N-C substrate, which not only affords rich exposed active sites but also promotes faster charge transfer, thus significantly promoting OER process. This work presents a promising and industrially applicable synthetic strategy for the rational design of high performance nonnoble metal electrocatalysts with enhanced OER performance.

Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici (Forl) is a destructive soil-borne phytopathogenic fungus that causes Fusarium crown and root rot (FCRR) of tomato, leading to considerable field yield losses. In this study, we explored the antifungal capability of linalool, a natural plant volatile organic component, against Forl and its role in controlling FCRR symptoms in tomatoes. Our results showed that Forl mycelial growth was inhibited by the linalool treatment and that the linalool treatment damaged cell membrane integrity, enhanced reactive oxygen species levels, depleted glutathione, and reduced the activities of many antioxidant enzymes in Forl. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses demonstrated that linalool also downregulated metabolic biosynthetic pathways at the transcript and protein levels, including redox, transporter activity, and carbohydrate metabolism in Forl. Moreover, linalool significantly decreased the expression of many Forl pathogenic genes, such as cell wall degrading enzymes (CWDEs) and G proteins, which is likely how a Forl infection was prevented. Importantly, exogenously applied linalool activated the salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) defensive pathways to improve disease resistance and relieved the negative effects of Forl on plant growth. Taken together, we report that linalool is an effective fungicide against Forl and will be a promising green chemical agent for controlling FCRR.

In order to improve the operation efficiency of wind turbine gearbox and reduce the operation and maintenance cost of wind farm, a fault diagnosis system for wind turbine gearbox based on multisensor data fusion was proposed. First, the different time-domain statistical characteristic parameters of the original vibration signal were calculated, and the information fusion of the feature level and the data level was carried out by means of parallel superposition to obtain the fused data set. Second, a fault classification and recognition model based on GMO-KELM was established by using the fusion data set. Finally, the proposed method was used to monitor the status of the measured data of the gearbox on the vibration test bed of rotating machinery. The experimental results showed that the average training accuracy and the average test accuracy of GMO-KELM method were 100% and 95.58%, respectively, which were much higher than those of other methods. Through experiments and analyses, it was shown that the proposed method was effective and feasible. Compared with other similar methods, the proposed method had the best classification performance.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the major diabetic complications that lead to end-stage renal failure. Angiopoietin-like protein-4 (ANGPTL-4) has been reported to be dysregulated in diabetes mellitus and diabetic complications. However, the role of ANGPTL-4 in glomerular mesangial cells (MCs) during DN remains unclear. In the present study, we evaluated the role of ANGPTL-4 in MCs in response to high glucose (HG) condition and the potential mechanism. The results proved that ANGPTL-4 expression is significantly increased in HG-stimulated MCs. Knockdown of ANGPTL-4 suppressed HG-induced cell proliferation of MCs. The production of pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 were decreased in ANGPTL-4 knocked down MCs. Inhibition of ANGPTL-4 markedly suppressed the expressions of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, collagen IV (Col IV) and fibronectin (FN), in HG-stimulated MCs. Furthermore, ANGPTL-4 knockdown inhibited the HG-induced activation of NF-κB signaling pathway in MCs. Collectively, knockdown of ANGPTL-4 suppressed HG-induced cell proliferation, inflammatory response, and ECM accumulation inhibiting NF-κB signaling pathway in MCs. These findings suggested that ANGPTL-4 might be a therapeutic target for the prevention and treatment of DN.

Gray mold is a disease that often occurs in postharvest tomato fruits, leading to a significant decline in the fruits’ quality. In production, pesticides are mostly used to control gray mold, which negatively affect both the environment and food safety. The purpose of this article is to study the effects of linalool fumigation on controlling gray mold in tomato fruits and to further investigate the mechanism of linalool function, so as to provide technical support and a theoretical basis for the application of linalool in the green control of tomato gray mold. The results of the in vitro experiments showed that linalool fumigation had a strong inhibitory effect on the mycelial growth of Botrytis cinerea and that the fumigation of linalool inhibited the expansion of pathogens on tomato fruits. The disease index of tomato fruits in the linalool treatment was always lower than that of the control within 72 h after inoculation with Botrytis cinerea; at the end of experiment, the disease index of the control reached 100.0, which was only 8.0 with the 30 μL/L linalool treatment. Linalool fumigation increased the antioxidant capacity of the tomato fruits under Botrytis cinerea infection through regulating activities of SOD, POD and CAT as well as the ascorbic acid (AsA) content, which could be responsible for the lower malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation. Linalool fumigation increased the activities of polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) in tomato fruits, indicating that secondary metabolism was involved in the function of linalool in the regulation of tomato fruit resistance to pathogens. As the main enzymes related to cell structure, polygalacturonase (PG), cellulase (CL) and β-galactosidase (β-GAL) were inhibited by linalool, which could protect cell wall structures from damage, and strengthened the mechanical barrier against pathogen access to fruit flesh.

The sintering of osmium is critical for the preparation of raw material targets for film coating, which is the main application area of osmium. In order to get a better understanding of the intrinsic mechanism of densification of osmium, a serial study on the sintering behavior of osmium has been made in this study. By the master sintering curve (MSC) and constant heating rate (CHR) method, the sintering activation energy of nanosized osmium is evaluated to be about 340 kJ/mol, which is higher than most other metals. The density–functional theory calculation indicates the higher energy barrier of the surface atom and vacancy migration and lacking migration tunnel of inner point vacancies. For example, the diffusion of osmium atoms on the surface of particles is mainly limited by Os (1010), which has an energy barrier as high as 1.14 eV, that is higher than the W atom on W (110) of 0.99 eV. The vacancy migration energy barrier inside osmium’s grains is higher than 3.0 eV, while that of W is only 1.7 eV. This means that it is more difficult for osmium to achieve a high density compared with W, which is consistent with the experimental results. Accordingly, the proposed strategy provides a new opportunity to design a sintering process for target fabrication with excellent properties for various applications.

Excessive concentrations of nitrate (NO3-N) in water lead to the deterioration of water quality, reducing biodiversity and destroying ecosystems. Therefore, the present study investigated NO3-N removal from simulated wastewater by nanoscale zero-valent iron-supported ordered mesoporous Zr-Ce-SBA-15 composites (nZVI/Zr-Ce-SBA-15) assisted by response surface methodology (RSM), an artificial neural network combined with a genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) and a radial basis neural network (RBF). The successful support of nZVI on Zr-Ce-SBA-15 was confirmed using XRD, FTIR, TEM, SEM–EDS, N2 adsorption and XPS, which indicated ordered mesoporous materials. The results showed that ANN-GA was better than the RSM for optimizing the conditions of NO3-N removal and the RBF neural network further confirmed the reliability of the ANN-GA model. The removal rate of NO3-N by the composites reached 95.71% under the optimized experimental conditions (initial pH of 4.89, contact time = of 62.27 min, initial NO3-N concentration of 74.84 mg/L and temperature of 24.77 °C). The process of NO3-N adsorption onto Zr-Ce-SBA-15 composites was followed by the Langmuir model (maximum adsorption capacity of 45.24 mg/g), pseudo-second-order kinetics, and was spontaneous, endothermic and entropy driven. The yield of N2 can be improved after nZVI was supported on Zr-Ce-SBA-15, and the composites exhibited a strong renewability in the short term within three cycles. The resolution of Fe2+ experiments confirmed that nZVI/Zr-Ce-SBA-15 was simultaneously undergoing adsorption and catalysis in the process of NO3-N removal. Our study suggests that the ordered mesoporous nZVI/Zr-Ce-SBA-15 composites are a promising material for simultaneously performing NO3-N removal and improving the selectivity of N2, which provides a theoretical reference for NO3-N remediation from wastewater.

Abstract Vibration characteristic plays an important role in vibrothermography, which directly affects the heating during the test. In this work, involving all the contacts in the vibrothermography, the “double-mass-three-spring” model is established to explore the vibration characteristic. The obtained results show that ultrasonic gun vibrates at fundamental frequency (FF), while the specimen vibrates at multi-frequencies including FF, 2FF, 3FF, and 4FF, which is validated through experimental investigation results. Additionally, the model proposed in this work reveals a high order harmonics in the vibrothermography test and makes the specimen conduct the steady vibration, which indicates that the model is closer to the practical equipment and can ensure the heating efficiency induced by vibration of specimen to improve the detection capability.

At present, the built or newly built underground structures are mostly concentrated in developed areas along the coast, lakes, and rivers, while deep soft soil is widely distributed in these areas. The cold heat treatment method is one of the advanced foundation treatments and has broad application prospect. However, geothermal exchange and temperature field change are complex Stefan problems with mobile boundaries, internal heat sources, and phase changes. It is important to determine the freezing area and freezing temperature reasonably under the premise of ensuring the safety of the frozen construction. Therefore, this paper summarizes the research methods of freezing method construction of cross passage and introduces the research on the constitutive model of freezing undisturbed soil, the theory of freezing wall calculation, and the evolution mechanism of the temperature field. Then, a brief evaluation is made in view of the lack of research, and the development direction of this field is put forward with the research characteristics. It is to deepen the understanding of the deformation mechanism of cross passage embedded in soft soil caused by the freezing and melting.

Cold stress is a major environmental factor that detrimentally affects plant growth and development. Melatonin has been shown to confer plant tolerance to cold stress through activating the C-REPEAT BINDING FACTOR (CBF) pathway; however, the underlying modes that enable this function remain obscure. In this study, we investigated the role of H2O2 and Ca2+ signaling in the melatonin-induced CBF pathway and cold tolerance in watermelon (Citrullus lanatus L.) through pharmacological, physiological, and genetic approaches. According to the results, melatonin induced H2O2 accumulation, which was associated with the upregulation of respiratory burst oxidase homolog D (ClRBOHD) during the early response to cold stress in watermelon. Besides, melatonin and H2O2 induced the accumulation of cytoplasmic free Ca2+ ([Ca2+]cyt) in response to cold. This was associated with the upregulation of cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channel 2 (ClCNGC2) in watermelon. However, blocking of Ca2+ influx channels abolished melatonin- or H2O2-induced CBF pathway and cold tolerance. Ca2+ also induced ClRBOHD expression and H2O2 accumulation in early response to cold stress in watermelon. Inhibition of H2O2 production in watermelon by RBOH inhibitor or in Arabidopsis by AtRBOHD knockout compromised melatonin-induced [Ca2+]cyt accumulation and melatonin- or Ca2+-induced CBF pathway and cold tolerance. Overall, these findings indicate that melatonin induces RBOHD-dependent H2O2 generation in early response to cold stress. Increased H2O2 promotes [Ca2+]cyt accumulation, which in turn induces H2O2 accumulation via RBOHD, forming a reciprocal positive-regulatory loop that mediates melatonin-induced CBF pathway and subsequent cold tolerance.

Citrus is a globally consumed fruit with great popularity. Mandarin (Citrus reticulata cv. ‘Shatangju’) is a local variety, and its planting area and yield are the greatest regarding fruit tree planting in Guangdong Province, China. However, its resistance to Huanglongbing (HLB) is weak. After infection by HLB, the fruits cannot develop normally. In this study, four kinds of fruits were classified as HBG, XQG, ZQG, and DHG, according to the color of their peels. The metabolomes of the three abnormally colored groups (HBG, XQG, and ZQG) and the normally colored group (DHG) were compared using a UPLC-QQQ-MS-based metabolomics approach. In total, 913 metabolites were identified and classified into 23 different categories, including phenylpropanoids and flavonoids; among them, 215 (HBG, 177; XQG, 124; and ZQG, 62) metabolites showed differential accumulation in the three comparison groups (HBG/XQG/ZQG versus DHG). A total of 2 unique metabolites, O-caffeoyl maltotriose and myricetin were detected only in DHG samples. When comparing HBG with DHG, there were 109 decreased and 68 increased metabolites; comparing XQG with DHG, there were 88 decreased and 36 increased metabolites; comparing ZQG with DHG, 41 metabolites were decreased, and 21 metabolites were increased. Metabolic pathway enrichment analysis of these differential metabolites showed significant enrichment of the “phenylpropanoid biosynthesis” pathway in all comparison groups. The hierarchical cluster analysis of the differential metabolites of the four groups showed a clear grouping patterns. The relative contents of three phenylpropanoids, four flavonoids, two alkaloids, one anthocyanin, and two other metabolites were significantly different between each comparison group. This study might provide fundamental insight for the isolation and identification of functional compounds from the peels of citrus fruit infected with HLB and for in-depth research on the effect of HLB on the formation of fruits pigment and the development of HLB-resistant citrus varieties.

In this paper, an e_cient method based on Quasi-Newton's method and the simpli_ed reproducing kernel method is proposed for solving nonlinear singular boundary value problems. For the Quasi-Newton's method the convergence order is studied. The uniform convergence of the numerical solution as well as its derivatives are also proved. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the e_ciency and stability of the proposed method. The numerical results are compared with exact solutions and the outcomes of other existing numerical methods.

Despite identification of WRKY family genes in numerous plant species, a little is known about WRKY genes in watermelon, one of the most economically important fruit crops around the world. Here, we identified a total of 63 putative WRKY genes in watermelon and classified them into three major groups (I-III) and five subgroups (IIa-IIe) in group II. The structure analysis indicated that ClWRKYs with different WRKY domains or motifs may play different roles by regulating respective target genes. The expressions of ClWRKYs in different tissues indicate that they are involved in various tissue growth and development. Furthermore, the diverse responses of ClWRKYs to drought, salt, or cold stress suggest that they positively or negatively affect plant tolerance to various abiotic stresses. In addition, the altered expression patterns of ClWRKYs in response to phytohormones such as, ABA, SA, MeJA, and ETH, imply the occurrence of complex cross-talks between ClWRKYs and plant hormone signals in regulating plant physiological and biological processes. Taken together, our findings provide valuable clues to further explore the function and regulatory mechanisms of ClWRKY genes in watermelon growth, development, and adaption to environmental stresses.

Both the calcium-dependent protein kinases (CDPKs) and CDPK-related kinases (CRKs) play numerous roles in plant growth, development, and stress response. Despite genome-wide identification of both families in Cucumis, comparative evolutionary and functional analysis of both CDPKs and CRKs in Cucurbitaceae remain unclear. In this study, we identified 128 CDPK and 56 CRK genes in total in six Cucurbitaceae species (C. lanatus, C. sativus, C. moschata, C. maxima, C. pepo, and L. siceraria). Dot plot analysis indicated that self-duplication of conserved domains contributed to the structural variations of two CDPKs (CpCDPK19 and CpCDPK27) in C. pepo. Using watermelon genome as reference, an integrated map containing 25 loci (16 CDPK and nine CRK loci) was obtained, 16 of which (12 CDPK and four CRK) were shared by all seven Cucurbitaceae species. Combined with exon-intron organizations, topological analyses indicated an ancient origination of groups CDPK IV and CRK. Moreover, the evolutionary scenario of seven modern Cucurbitaceae species could also be reflected on the phylogenetic trees. Expression patterns of ClCDPKs and ClCRKs were studied under different abiotic stresses. Some valuable genes were uncovered for future gene function exploration. For instance, both ClCDPK6 and its ortholog CsCDPK14 in cucumber could be induced by salinity, while ClCDPK6 and ClCDPK16, as well as their orthologs in Cucumis, maintained high expression levels in male flowers. Collectively, these results provide insights into the evolutionary history of two gene families in Cucurbitaceae, and indicate a subset of candidate genes for functional characterizations in the future.

OBJECTIVE: Candidate gene association studies and genome-wide association studies (GWAs) have identified a large number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) loci affecting susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, for the same locus, some studies have yielded inconsistent results. To assess all the available evidence for association, we performed a meta-analysis on previously published case-control studies investigating the association between SNPs and RA. METHODS: Two hundred and sixteen studies, involving 125 SNPs, were reviewed. For each SNP, three genetic models were considered: the allele, dominant and recessive effects models. For each model, the effect summary odds ratio (OR) and 95% CIs were calculated. Cochran's Q-statistics were used to assess heterogeneity. If the heterogeneity was high, a random effects model was used for meta-analysis, otherwise a fixed effects model was used.
