Abstract For about 25 years, global methods from the calculus of variations have been used to establish the existence of chaotic behavior for some classes of dynamical systems. Like the analytical approaches that were used earlier, these methods require nondegeneracy conditions, but of a weaker nature than their predecessors. Our goal here is study such a nondegeneracy condition that has proved useful in several contexts including some involving partial differential equations, and to show this condition has an equivalent formulation involving stable and unstable manifolds. In an earlier paper, [1] , the authors treated a family of Allen–Cahn model problems for which 0 and 1 are solutions and further solutions were found that are near 1 on a prescribed set, T + Ω , where T ⊂ Z n , and near 0 on ( Z n ∖ T ) + Ω . In this paper, a more general class of potentials is treated for which the pair, { 0 , 1 } , is replaced by Z and the existence of a far richer structure of shadowing solutions, including unbounded ones, is established. Abstract: Variational gluing arguments are employed to construct new families of solutions for a class of semilinear elliptic PDEs. The main tools are the use of invariant regions for an associated heat flow and variational arguments. The latter provide a characterization of critical values of an associated functional. Among the novelties of the paper are the construction of “hybrid” solutions by gluing minima and mountain pass solutions and an analysis of the asymptotics of the gluing process. Recent papers have studied the existence of phase transition solutions for Allen-Cahn type equations. These solutions are either single or multi-transition spatial heteroclinics or homo- clinics between simpler equilibrium states. A sufficient condition for the construction of the multi- transition solutions is that there are gaps in the ordered set of single transition solutions. This paper continues the recent study of an Allen-Cahn model PDE [1] by eliminating a strong spatial reversibility condition and by weakening certain nondegeneracy conditions on families of basic heteroclinic solutions, enabling us to obtain multibump solutions in a much more general setting. This paper studies a Hamiltonian system possessing a double well potential for which the existence of multitransition heteroclinic and homoclinic solutions that are local minimizers of an associated functional is known. Under an additional mild non-degeneracy condition on the set of all homoclinic and heteroclinic solutions, the existence of further heteroclinic and homoclinic solutions that are of mountain pass type is established.
