First ever lidar observation in Tajikistan were conducted during the Central Asian Dust Experiment 2015–2016 (CADEX) in Dushanbe. Analysis of layer-mean optical properties revealed frequently low lidar ratios at enhanced depolarization ratios. These cases were categorized as background aerosol since they occurred at low extinction conditions. Such optical properties are similar to dried and therefore cubic-like shaped sea salt particles. This led to the hypothesis that Central Asian background aerosol and its optical properties are influenced by dry lakes and saline playas which are frequent in Central Asia. The goal of this study is to extend the existing data analysis with a backward trajectory-based time– height resolved air mass source attribution tool which was not yet available at the time of the CADEX campaign and its data analysis. Despite on average similar air mass origins for all cases irrespective of their optical properties, results suggest slightly more southern and south-western influenced air masses for cases with larger lidar ratios than for cases with lower lidar ratios.

Focusing on Tajikistan, a region facing critical environmental challenges, this extended abstract provides insights into the relationship between aerosols and clouds in Central Asia by means of lidar observations. Since 2019, a novel Dual-Field-of-View (DFOV) Raman polarization lidar system in Dushanbe has provided highly-resolved data on aerosol and cloud microphysical properties. Given the limited observational experiments in Central Asia, these measurements might play a crucial role in addressing climaterelated concerns. In fact, this technological deployment might not only provide a better picture regarding the spatio-temporal distribution of mineral dust and urban emissions, but also improve our understanding regarding the complex interactions between aerosol and clouds. One of the most uncertain aspects when predicting future temperature and precipitation patterns. Furthermore, an extended trajectory-based source attribution tool has been implemented to track air masses in Tajikistan, providing enhanced support for this and future studies. This research focuses on data evaluation and analysis, building upon established lidar methodologies. The resulting insights can potentially contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between aerosols and clouds in the dry continental conditions that persists in this region.

Novel observations of aerosol and clouds by means of ground-based remote sensing have been performed in Antarctica over the Ekstrom Ice Shelf on the coast of Dronning Maud Land at Neumayer Station III (70.67[degrees]S, 8.27[degrees]W) from January to December 2023. The deployment of the OCEANET-Atmosphere remote sensing observatory in the framework of the Continuous Observations of Aerosol-Cloud Interaction (COALA) campaign has brought Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure (ACTRIS) aerosol and cloud profiling capabilities next to meteorological and air chemistry in situ observations at the Antarctic station. We present an overview of the site, the instrumental setup, and data analysis strategy and introduce 3 scientific highlights from austral fall and winter, namely, 1) observations of a persistent mixed-phase cloud embedded in a plume of marine aerosol. Remote sensing-based retrievals of cloud-relevant aerosol properties and cloud microphysical parameters confirm that the free-tropospheric mixed-phase cloud layer formed in an aerosol-limited environment. 2) Two extraordinary warm air intrusions: one with intense snowfall produced the equivalent of 10% of the yearly snow accumulation and a second one with record-breaking maximum temperatures and heavy icing due to supercooled drizzle. 3) Omnipresent aerosol layers in the stratosphere. Our profiling capabilities could show that 50% of the 500-nm aerosol optical depth of 0.06 was caused by stratospheric aerosol, while the troposphere was usually pristine. As demonstrated by these highlights, the 1-yr COALA observations will serve as a reference dataset for the vertical structure of aerosol and clouds above the region, enabling future observational and modeling studies to advance understanding of atmospheric processes in Antarctica. On 22nd August 2018, the European Space Agency (ESA) launched the first direct detection Doppler wind lidar into space. Operating at 355 nm and acquiring signals with a dual channel receiver, it allows wind observations in clear air and particle-laden regions of the atmosphere. Furthermore, particle optical properties can be obtained using the High Spectral Resolution Technique Lidar (HSRL) technique. Measuring with 87 km horizontal and 0.25-2 km vertical resolution between ground and up to 30 km in the stratosphere, the global coverage of Aeolus observations shall fill gaps in the global observing system and thus help improving numerical weather prediction. Within this contribution, first results from the German initiative for experimental Aeolus validation are presented and discussed. Ground-based wind and aerosol measurements from tropospheric radar wind profilers, Doppler wind lidars, radiosondes, aerosol lidars and cloud radars are utilized for that purpose.

In this work we evaluate the possibilities to assess aerosol-cloud interactions in short time scales (2 min.) on an observational base. Retrievals of the cloud effective radius and number concentration in a liquid-water cloud by using the multiple scattering technique Dual-FOV Polarization lidar, together with the aerosol extinction coefficient in the boundary layer has shown a correspondence between the aerosol and cloud properties in the 6 hours case presented, obtaining a value of ACIN = 0.76 ± 0.29, which corroborates the potential of lidar observations to study the relation between aerosols and clouds on small scales.

Vertically resolved multiwavelength aerosol Raman lidar observations were conducted in the pristine environment of the Southern-hemisphere midlatitudes at Punta Arenas, Chile (53.1346°S, 70.8834°W). In contrast to the usually prevailing clean and pristine conditions at this site, two pronounced lofted aerosol layers were observed up to 4.2 and 4.4 km height on 4 and 5 February 2019, respectively. The layers mainly consisted of biomass burning aerosols originating from the region of Central Chile, where wildfires were also observed. Based on spectrally resolved backscatter and extinction coefficients, lidar ratios and depolarization ratio a detailed characterization of the aerosol optical properties is presented.

To date, there remains a noticeable gap in reliable techniques for retrieving the shape and orientation of ice particles from observational data. This paper introduces a method using ground-based polarimetric cloud radar to retrieve the shape and orientation of multiple hydrometeor types within deep mixed-phase clouds. Building on the strong performance of an existing method, which is effective in retrieving the shape and orientation of pristine ice particles in stratiform clouds, we extended this technique by analyzing the entire Doppler spectrum. The previously developed main-peak approach focuses on the maximum of the Doppler spectrum to retrieve the shape and orientation of the dominant hydrometeor types within stratiform clouds. In the extended technique, referred to as the spectrally resolved technique, the full Doppler spectrum is analyzed by dividing it into five parts, ultimately allowing the retrieval of five distinct hydrometeor types. In this study, we employed the technique for Range-Height Indicator (RHI) scans (ranging from 30° to 90° elevation) utilizing polarimetric Ka-band cloud radar observations of differential reflectivity (ZDR) and correlation coefficient (RHV) across the entire Doppler spectrum. The potential of the improved approach is presented by means of two case studies. The first case demonstrates the effectiveness of the spectrally resolved approach and in the second case secondary ice production is investigated. These findings contribute to a profound understanding of hydrometeor characteristics, shedding light on dynamic cloud processes, especially in the context of precipitation and ice particle formation. Cloud radar Doppler spectra are of particular interest for investigating cloud microphysical processes, such as ice formation, riming and ice multiplication. When hydrometeor types within a cloud radar observation volume have different terminal fall velocities, they can produce individual Doppler spectrum peaks. The peaks of different particle types can overlap and be further broadened and blended by turbulence and other dynamical effects. If these (sub-)peaks can be separated, properties of the underlying hydrometeor populations can potentially be estimated, such as their fall velocity, number, size and to some extent their shape. However, this task is complex and dependent on the operation settings of the specific cloud radar, as well as atmospheric dynamics and hydrometeor characteristics. As a consequence, there is a need for adjustable tools that are able to detect peaks in cloud radar Doppler spectra to extract the valuable information contained in them. This paper presents the synergistic use of two algorithms used for analyzing the peaks in Doppler spectra: PEAKO and peakTree. PEAKO is a supervised machine learning tool that can be trained to obtain the optimal parameters for detecting peaks in Doppler spectra for specific cloud radar instrument settings. The learned parameters can then be applied by peakTree, which is used to detect, organize and interpret Doppler spectrum peaks. The application of the improved PEAKO–peakTree toolkit is demonstrated in two case studies. The interpretation is supported by forward-simulated cloud radar Doppler spectra by the Passive and Active Microwave TRAnsfer tool (PAMTRA), which are also used to explore the limitations of the algorithm toolkit posed by turbulence and the number of spectral averages chosen in the radar settings. From the PAMTRA simulations, we can conclude that a minimum number of n = 20–40 spectral averages is desirable for Doppler spectrum peak discrimination. Furthermore, small liquid peaks can only be reliably separated for eddy dissipation rate values up to approximately 0.0002 m2s-3 in the simulation setup which we tested here. The first case study demonstrates that the methods work for different radar systems and settings by comparing the results for two cloud radar systems which were operated simultaneously at a site in Punta Arenas, Chile. Detected peaks which can be attributed to liquid droplets agree well between the two systems, as well as with an independent liquid-predicting neural network. The second case study compares PEAKO–peakTree-detected cloud radar Doppler spectrum peaks to in situ observations collected by a balloon-based holographic imager during a campaign in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. This case demonstrates the algorithm toolkit's ability to identify different hydrometeor types but also reveals its limitations posed by strong turbulence and a low n. Despite these challenges, the algorithm toolkit offers a powerful means of extracting comprehensive information from cloud radar observations. In the future, we envision PEAKO–peakTree applications on the one hand for interpreting cloud microphysics in case studies. The identification of liquid cloud peaks emerges as a valuable asset, e.g., in studies on cloud radiative effects, in seeder–feeder processes, or for tracing vertical air motions. Furthermore, the computation of the moments for each subpeak enables the tracking of hydrometeor populations and the observation of growth processes along fallstreaks. On the other hand, PEAKO–peakTree applications could be extended to statistical evaluations of longer data sets. In this study we present an approach that uses the polarimetric variable SLDR (slanted linear depolarization ratio) from a scanning polarimetric cloud radar MIRA-35 in the SLDR configuration, to derive the vertical distribution of particle shape (VDPS) between the top and base of mixed-phase cloud systems. The polarimetric parameter SLDR was selected for this study due to its strong sensitivity to shape and low sensitivity to the wobbling effect of particles at different antenna elevation angles. For the VDPS method, elevation scans from 90 to 30∘ elevation angle were deployed to estimate the vertical profile of the particle shape by means of the polarizability ratio, which is a measure of the density-weighted axis ratio. Results were obtained by retrieving the best fit between observed SLDR from 90 to 30 ∘ elevation angle and respective values simulated with a spheroidal scattering model. The applicability of the new method is demonstrated by means of three case studies of isometric, columnar, and plate-like hydrometeor shapes, respectively, which were obtained from measurements at the Mediterranean site of Limassol, Cyprus. The identified hydrometeor shapes are demonstrated to fit well to the cloud and thermodynamic conditions which prevailed at the time of observation. A fourth case study demonstrates a scenario where ice particle shapes tend to evolve from a pristine state at the cloud top toward a more isometric shape or less dense particles at the cloud base. Either aggregation or riming processes contribute to this vertical change of microphysical properties. The new height-resolved identification of hydrometeor shape and the potential of the VDPS method to derive its vertical distribution are helpful tools to understand complex processes such as riming or aggregation, which occur particularly in mixed-phase clouds. The presented study investigates the efficiency of heterogeneous ice formation in natural clouds over Lauder, New Zealand / Aotearoa. Aerosol conditions in the middle troposphere above Lauder are subject to huge contrasts. Clean, pristine air masses from Antarctica and the Southern Ocean arrive under southerly flow conditions, while high aerosol loads can occur when air masses are advected from nearby Australia. This study assesses how these contrasts in aerosol load affect the ice formation efficiency in stratiform midlevel clouds in the heterogeneous freezing range (- 40 to 0 ∘C). For this purpose, an 11-year dataset was analyzed from a dual-wavelength polarization lidar system operated by National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), Taihoro Nukurangi, at Lauder in collaboration with the National Institute for Environmental Studies in Japan and the Meteorological Research Institute of the Japan Meteorological Agency. These data were used to investigate the efficiency of heterogeneous ice formation in clouds over the site as a function of cloud-top temperature as in previous studies at other locations. The Lauder cloud dataset was put into context with lidar studies from contrasting regions such as Germany and southern Chile. The ice formation efficiency found at Lauder is lower than in polluted midlatitudes (i.e., Germany) but higher than, for example, in southern Chile. Both Lauder and southern Chile are subject to generally low free-tropospheric aerosol loads, which suggests that the low ice formation efficiency at these two sites is related to low ice-nucleating-particle (INP) concentrations. However, Lauder sees episodes of continental aerosol, more than southern Chile does, which seems to lead to the moderately increased ice formation efficiency. Trajectory-based tools and aerosol model reanalyses are used to relate this cloud dataset to the aerosol load and the air mass sources. Both analyses point clearly to higher ice formation efficiency for clouds which are more strongly influenced by continental aerosol and to lower ice formation efficiency for clouds which are more influenced by Antarctic/marine aerosol and air masses. From 19 September to 13 December 2021, volcanic eruptions took place at the Cumbre Vieja ridge, Las Palmas, Canary Islands. Thereby, fine ash and volatiles, like sulfur dioxide (SO2), were emitted and transported over hundreds to thousands of kilometers away from the island. Continuous lidar observations with the multiwavelength-Raman-polarization lidar PollyXT were performed at the Ocean Science Center at Mindelo, Cabo Verde, in the framework of the Joint Aeolus-Tropical Atlantic Campaign (JATAC) 2021/2022 enabling the characterization of the atmospheric state above Mindelo during the eruption period. A special feature of the system operated at Mindelo is, that measurements of the particle extinction coefficient, the particle extinction-to-backscatter ratio (lidar ratio) and the particle linear depolarization ratio are available at all three wavelengths (355, 532 and 1064 nm). The typical aerosol conditions over Mindelo are a clean marine planetary boundary layer (PBL) up to approx. 1 km and above a Saharan dust layer (SAL, up to 6 km) during northern hemispheric summer and fall. A particle extinction coefficient smaller than 200 Mm−1, a lidar ratio smaller than 30 sr and a particle linear depolarization ratio close to 0 % have been typically observed within the planetary boundary layer, while a lidar ratio between 40 and 60 sr and a linear depolarization ratio between 20 and 30 % are characteristic for the SAL above. In contrast, during the time of the volcanic eruptions, a strongly polluted PBL was observed on specific days beginning on the 23 September 2021, whereby the particle extinction coefficient and the lidar ratio increased up to 800 Mm−1 and 80 sr (at 355 nm), respectively. On 24 September, the aerosol optical depth, determined by an AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) sun photometer, was as high as 0.9 and 1.1 (daily averages at 500 and 340 nm). HYSPLIT (Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) trajectories indicate air mass transport from Canary Islands to Mindelo at heights below 2 km. The observed pollution in the PBL over Mindelo is attributed to sulfate aerosol from the volcanic eruption at Las Palmas as the particle linear depolarization ratio was low (≤ 3 %) and, thus, does not indicate non-spherical particles, such as Saharan dust or volcanic ash. We thus conclude that sulfate aerosol formed from gaseous precursors during the transport (2–3 days for a distance of 1500 km) from Las Palmas towards Cabo Verde. No indications of volcanic ash over Mindelo were found in the SAL. This finding is supported by the HYSPLIT trajectories, which show that air masses in higher altitudes originate from the African continent and not from the Canary Islands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ground-based observations of horizontal winds have been performed at Leipzig (51.35 ∘ N, 12.43 ∘ E), Germany, and at Punta Arenas (53.15 ∘ S, 70.91 ∘ W), Chile, in the framework of the German initiative EVAA (Experimental Validation and Assimilation of Aeolus observations) with respect to the validation of the Mie and Rayleigh wind products of Aeolus (L2B data). In Leipzig, at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS), radiosondes have been launched for the Aeolus overpasses on each Friday (ascending orbit) since the middle of May 2019. In Punta Arenas, scanning Doppler cloud radar observations have been performed in the framework of the DACAPO-PESO campaign (dacapo.tropos.de) for more than 3 years from the end of 2018 until the end of 2021 and could be used to validate Aeolus measurements on its ascending and descending orbits. We present two case studies and long‐term statistics of the horizontal winds derived with the ground-based reference instruments compared to Aeolus horizontal line-of-sight (HLOS) winds. The wind products of Aeolus considered are the Mie cloudy and Rayleigh clear products. It was found that the deviation of the Aeolus HLOS winds from the ground reference is usually of Gaussian shape, which allowed the use of the median bias and the scaled median absolute deviation (MAD) for the determination of the systematic and random errors of Aeolus wind products, respectively. The case study from August 2020 with impressive atmospheric conditions at Punta Arenas shows that Aeolus is able to capture strong wind speeds of up to more than 100 m s -1. The long-term validation was performed in Punta Arenas covering the period from December 2018 to November 2021 and in Leipzig from May 2019 until September 2022. This analysis showed that the systematic error of the Aeolus wind products could be significantly lowered during the mission lifetime with the changes introduced into the processing chain (different versions are called baselines). While in the early mission phase, systematic errors of more than 2 m s -1 (absolute values) were observed for both wind types (Mie and Rayleigh), these biases could be reduced with the algorithm improvements, such as the introduction of the correction for temperature fluctuations at the main telescope of Aeolus (M1 temperature correction) with Baseline 09. Hence, since Baseline 10, a significant improvement in the Aeolus data was found, leading to a low systematic error (close to 0 m s -1) and similar values for the midlatitudinal sites in both hemispheres. The random errors for both wind products were first decreasing with an increasing baseline but later increasing again due to performance losses of the Aeolus lidar instrument. Nevertheless, no significant increase in the systematic error in the Aeolus wind products was found. Thus, one can conclude that the uncertainty introduced by the reduced atmospheric return signal received by Aeolus mostly affects the random error. Even when considering all the challenges during the mission, we can confirm the general validity of Aeolus observations during its lifetime. Therefore, this space explorer mission could demonstrate that it is possible to perform active wind observations from space with the applied technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a collection of lidar-derived aerosol intensive optical properties for several aerosol types, namely the particle linear depolarization ratio, the extinction-to-backscatter ratio (lidar ratio) and the Ångström exponent. The data collection, named DeLiAn, is based on globally distributed, long-term, ground-based, multiwavelength, Raman and polarization lidar measurements, conducted mainly with lidars that have been developed at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research. The intensive optical properties are presented at two wavelengths, 355 and 532 nm, for 13 aerosol categories. The categories cover the basic aerosol types (i.e., marine, pollution, continental European background, volcanic ash, smoke, mineral dust), as well as the most frequently observed mixtures they form. This extensive collection also incorporates more peculiar aerosol categories, including dried marine aerosol that, compared to marine aerosol, exhibits a significantly enhanced depolarization ratio (up to 15 %). Besides Saharan dust, additional mineral dust types related to their source region were identified due to their lower lidar ratios (Central Asian and Middle Eastern dust). In addition, extreme wildfire events (such as in north America and Australia) emitted smoke into the stratosphere showing significantly different optical properties, i.e., high depolarization values (up to 25 %), compared to tropospheric smoke. The data collection reflects and underlines the variety of aerosol mixtures in the atmosphere and can be used for the development of aerosol-typing schemes. The paper contains the most up-to-date and comprehensive overview of optical properties from aerosol lidar measurements and, therefore, provides a solid basis for future aerosol retrievals in the frame of both spaceborne and ground-based lidars. For the VDPS method, elevation scans from 90° to 30° elevation angle were deployed to estimate the vertical profile of the particle shape by means of the polarizability ratio, which is a measure of the density-weighted axis ratio. Results were obtained by retrieving the best fit between observed SLDR-vs-elevation dependencies and respective values simulated with a spheroid scattering model. The applicability of the new method is demonstrated by means of three case studies of isometric, columnar and oblate hydrometeor shapes, respectively, which were obtained from measurements at the Mediterranean site of Limassol, Cyprus. The identified hydrometeor shapes are demonstrated to fit well to the cloud and thermodynamic conditions which prevailed at the times of observations. Some observations reveal that in mixed-phased clouds ice particle shapes tend to evolve from a pristine columnar or dendritic state at cloud top toward a more isometric shape at cloud base. Either aggregation or riming processes contribute to this vertical change of microphysical properties. The new height-resolved identification of hydrometeor shape and the potential of the VDPS method to derive its vertical distribution are helpful tools to understand complex processes such as riming or aggregation, which occur particularly in mixed-phase clouds.
