The frequency assignment problem involves the assignment of discrete frequencies to the transmitters of a radio network, such as a radio broadcasting network. Frequency separation is necessary to avoid interference by other transmitters to the signal received from the wanted transmitter at the reception region. Here, it is of major importance to minimize the interference while at the same time using the spectrum efficiently. In this paper we present two original distributed algorithms implemented on clusters of PCs used to solve the frequency assignment problem in the field of radio broadcasting. The first one is based on the island distributed [1] implementation of our hybrid genetic algorithm [2]. The second one uses a distributed cooperative Tabu Search. Experimental results show that our algorithms, applied to several instances given by TDF-C2R, lead to important time performance improvements. High complexity of frequency-hopping (FH)/spread-spectrum (SS) sequence is of great importance to high-security multiple-access communication systems, for it makes FH/SS sequence difficult to be analyzed. With the growing development in the design of FH/SS sequence in much wider fields, the well-known complexity measures--the linear complexity (LC), the linear complexity profile (LCP) and the k-error linear complexity (k-error LC)--are widely used but not sufficient to evaluate the complexities of the sequences available, such as the cryptographical sequence and the chaotic sequence families. In this paper, a new complexity metric to evaluate the unpredictability of FH/SS sequence based on the approximate entropy (ApEn) is proposed in the view of the maximal randomness of the sequences with arbitrary length. And the theoretical bounds of the ApEn are derived from a probabilistic point of view. Simulations and analysis results show that, the proposed ApEn works effectively to discern the changing complexities of the FH/SS sequences with small number of samples, which provide superior performance over its candidates. An approximate maximum-likelihood (ML) estimator is derived for the estimation of the parameters of the concentrated propagation paths and the distributed scattering component observed in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel sounding measurements. Theproject's main objective was the implementation of a Trial Platformproviding a full duplex radio link of 34 Mbit/s to prove the technicalfeasibility with today's technology and to evaluate the main MBSfunctionality for the public cellular MBS segment. Thus, extensive fieldtrials were carried out in the city of Aveiro, Portugal, in differentenvironments and using the 40 GHz band. The paper starts with anintroductory analysis of the radio channel impairments and discusses thevarious appropriate mitigation techniques. A brief description of theSAMBA Trial Platform used in the measurements campaign is presentedconcentrating on the description of the main technical solutions relatedwith the physical layer. Then, representative measurements resultscollected in an urban and in an indoor environment are analysed so as toevaluate the system performance, focusing on the cell coverage area andtransmission quality. This study is made analysing parameters such as:received power level, bit error rate, fitted Rice distributionparameters to model the small-scale fading, power level cumulativedistribution functions, level crossing rate and average fade duration ofthe signals received in the two diversity antennas and the resultedsignal after combination. The achieved results constitute a significantforward step for the MBS development.
