Using observational data obtained with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope, we succeeded in identifying subcomponents of different pulse profile components of PSR B1822−09 by the phase-to-phase cross correlations between intensity sequences of single pulses. The determined number of the subcomponents and edges of the subcomponents are consistent with the results of Gaussian fitting on the mean pulse profiles of PSR B1822−09. According to the results, the main pulse (MP) in both the radio burst mode (B mode) and the radio-quiet mode (Q mode), the precursor (PC), and the interpulse (IP) of PSR B1822−09 are all composed of three subcomponents. The correlation coefficients between intensity sequences at different pulse phases reveal a positive correlation between the subcomponent C8 of the MP and C3 of the IP in the Q mode, and a positive correlation between C5 of the PC and C2 of the IP during the switching process from the B mode to the Q mode. These complex correlations present a challenge for the existing scenarios that describe relations between different pulse profile components. We proposed a hypothesis that different subcomponents correspond to different subpatches on the pulsar surface, and emissions from a subpatch reveal responses of the subpatch to some variations like the voltage in the magnetosphere. The analysis of parameters of radio pulsars with periods s has been carried out. It was found that there is no clear dependence of on on the diagram. The lack of dependence can be explained within the disk model. It is shown that the pulse width decreases with increasing period for the sample considered. It is the opposite of the dependence in the generally accepted pulsar model. It indicates that the distance from the surface of the neutron star to the radio emission generation region in the studied population depends on the period or that the magnetic field in the generation region has a non-dipolar structure. The possibility of explaining the longest intervals between successive pulses in pulsars J0901–4046 and J0250+5854 by the influence of drift waves at the periphery of the magnetosphere has been considered. Within the framework of the drift model, the calculated rotation periods in these pulsars turn out to be several times shorter than the observed intervals between successive pulses. We have searched for radio pulsations toward 49 Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) 1FGL Catalog γ -ray sources using the Green Bank Telescope at 350 MHz. We detected 18 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in blind searches of the data; 10 of these were discoveries unique to our survey. 16 are binaries, with eight having short orbital periods P B < 1 day. No radio pulsations from young pulsars were detected, although three targets are coincident with apparently radio-quiet γ -ray pulsars discovered in LAT data. Here, we give an overview of the survey and present radio and γ -ray timing results for the 10 MSPs discovered. These include the only isolated MSP discovered in our survey and six short- P B binary MSPs. Of these, three have very-low-mass companions (M c ≪ 0.1 M ⊙) and hence belong to the class of black widow pulsars. Two have more massive, nondegenerate companions with extensive radio eclipses and orbitally modulated X-ray emission consistent with the redback class. Significant γ -ray pulsations have been detected from nine of the discoveries. This survey and similar efforts suggest that the majority of Galactic γ -ray sources at high Galactic latitudes are either MSPs or relatively nearby nonrecycled pulsars, with the latter having on average a much smaller radio/ γ -ray beaming ratio as compared to MSPs. The effect of a small-scale magnetic field on the heating of the polar cap of the pulsar J0901-4046 by the reverse current of positrons is considered. It is shown that under some configurations of a small-scale field, the luminosity of its polar cap can reach 1025 erg/s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the jitter noise resulting from single-pulse phase and shape variations is important for the detection of gravitational waves using pulsar timing arrays. We present measurements of the jitter noise and single-pulse variability of 12 millisecond pulsars that are part of the International Pulsar Timing Array sample using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope. We find that the levels of jitter noise can vary dramatically among pulsars. A moderate correlation with a correlation coefficient of 0.57 between jitter noise and pulse width is detected. To mitigate jitter noise, we perform matrix template matching using all four Stokes parameters. Our results reveal a reduction in jitter noise ranging from 6.7% to 39.6%. By performing longitude-resolved fluctuation spectrum analysis, we identify periodic intensity modulations in 10 pulsars. In PSR J0030+0451, we detect single pulses with energies more than 10 times the average pulse energy, suggesting the presence of giant pulses. We also observe a periodic mode-changing phenomenon in PSR J0030+0451. We examine the achievable timing precision by selecting a subset of pulses with a specific range of peak intensity, but no significant improvement in timing precision is achievable. We report the nulling and subpulse-drifting properties of PSR J1649+2533 with observations of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST). The FAST observations reveal that the nulling fraction of this pulsar is about 20.9% ± 0.8% at 1250 MHz. The statistical study of the durations of the nulling and burst states shows that the burst states can persist for extended pulse periods, exceeding 100 periods in some cases, while the shortest lasts only a few pulse periods. The null states have a much shorter duration, with a maximum duration of less than 30 pulse periods. A comparative study between the pulse profiles of the first active pulse (FAP) and the last active pulse (LAP) shows that the pulse profiles of LAPs are stronger and wider than those of FAPs. An analysis of the two-dimensional fluctuation spectrum for the single-pulse stack indicates that the pulsar exhibits clear amplitude modulation and subpulse drifting. The periods are a P 3 = 2.5 ± 0.1 spin period and P 2 = 17.°0 ± 0.°5 at 1250 MHz, respectively. In addition, the multiband investigation shows that P 2 seems to increase with the increase of the observing frequency, i.e., P 2 ∝ ν 0.8±0.1. This seems to be caused by the increasing pulse-profile width with the frequency. The high-sensitivity FAST observations will enable a detailed understanding of the emission of this pulsar and provide important clues for theoretical studies of the radiation mechanism. A statistical model is used to determine how stochastic fluctuations in the intensities of orthogonal polarization modes contribute to the modulation and depolarization of pulsar radio emission. General expressions for the distributions of the Stokes parameters, linear polarization, polarization position angle, and fractional polarization are derived when the mode intensities follow the same or different probability distributions. The transition between modes is examined. When the mode intensities follow the same distribution, the fractional linear polarization and modulation index are symmetric about the transition. The symmetry is disrupted when the mode intensities follow different distributions. The fractional linear polarization is minimum and the mode frequency of occurrence changes rapidly at transitions where the mode intensity distributions are the same and the modulation index is small. A lower limit on the fractional linear polarization that can be attained via the simultaneous occurrence of the modes as a function of modulation index is quantified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present results from long-term monitoring of frequency-dependent eclipses of the radio emission from PSR J1544+4937, which is a black widow spider millisecond pulsar (MSP) in a compact binary system. The majority of such systems often exhibit relatively long-duration radio eclipses caused by ablated material from their companion stars. With the wide spectral bandwidth of the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, we present the first systematic study of temporal variation of eclipse cutoff frequency. With decade-long monitoring of 39 eclipses for PSR J1544+4937, we notice significant changes in the observed cutoff frequency ranging from 343 ± 7 to ≥740 MHz. We also monitored changes in eclipse cutoff frequency on timescales of tens of days and observed a maximum change of ≥315 MHz between observations that were separated by 22 days. In addition, we observed a change of ∼47 MHz in eclipse cutoff frequency between adjacent orbits, i.e., on timescales of ∼2.9 hr. We infer that such changes in the eclipse cutoff frequency depict an eclipse environment for the PSR J1544+4937 system that is dynamically evolving, where, along with the change in electron density, the magnetic field could also be varying. We also report a significant correlation between the eclipse cutoff frequency and the mass-loss rate of the companion. In this paper we review the basics of magneto-rotational properties of neutron stars focusing on spin-up/spin-down behavior at different evolutionary stages. The main goal is to provide equations for the spin frequency changes in various regimes (radio pulsar, propeller, accretor, etc.). Since presently the spin behavior of neutron stars at all stages remains a subject of many uncertainties, we review different suggestions made over the years in the literature. To study the normal pulsars based on the observations in radio and γ -ray bands, we try to investigate their classifications by the samples with the three different emission types, i.e., radio-only, γ -only and γ + radio emissions, and then discuss their physical causes. In the spin-down power range of E ˙ ∼ 10 36 − 10 39 erg ⋅ s − 1 , three types of normal pulsars exhibit the similar distributions of the spin period– P , spin-down power– E ˙ and characteristic age– τ , implying that they may belong to the same category of young pulsars. Moreover, in the range of E ˙ ∼ 10 33 − 10 36 erg ⋅ s − 1 , γ -only/ γ + radio normal pulsars share the similar distributions of P and τ values, and these two group sources exhibit the faster average spin periods (〈 P 〉 ∼ 0.23 s/ 〈 P 〉 ∼ 0.22 s), higher average spin-down powers (〈 E ˙ 〉 ∼ 2.00 × 10 35 erg ⋅ s − 1 / 〈 E ˙ 〉 ∼ 2.13 × 10 35 erg ⋅ s − 1 ) and smaller average characteristic ages (〈 τ 〉 ∼ 4.8 × 10 5 yr/ 〈 τ 〉 ∼ 4.1 × 10 5 yr) than radio-only normal pulsars (〈 P 〉 ∼ 0.42 s, 〈 E ˙ 〉 ∼ 3.2 × 10 34 erg ⋅ s − 1 and 〈 τ 〉 ∼ 1.64 × 10 6 yr). We suggest that γ -only/ γ + radio normal pulsars with E ˙ ∼ 10 33 − 10 36 erg ⋅ s − 1 are the young objects emitting γ -rays due to the high voltage in the radiation region. Meanwhile, after the temporal evolution of about τ ∼ 10 6 yr, these two group pulsars can be hardly detected with γ -rays due to the decrease of the radiation voltage, which will finally evolve into radio-only pulsars. We report the detection of an extreme flux decrease accompanied by clear dispersion measure (DM) and rotation measure (RM) variations for pulsar B1929+10 during the 110 minute radio observation with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope. The radio flux decreases by 2–3 orders of magnitude within a rapid timescale of about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the variations of DM and RM are approximately 0.05 pc cm ^−3 and 0.7 rad m ^−2 , respectively. Frequency-dependent analysis of DM indicates an extremely weak chromatic DM feature, which does not notably affect the radiative behavior detected. Moreover, the pulsar timing analysis shows an additional time delay from 100 μ s to 400 μ s in the event. These results are speculated to be due to the eclipse and bend for the radio emission of pulsar B1929+10 by a highly dense outflow from the pulsar. This not only impacts the intrinsic radio emission feature but also affects the pulsar timing behavior. Nevertheless, a plasma lens effect lasting around 20 minutes could also be responsible for the event.

We present a long-period radio transient (GLEAM-X J0704−37) discovered to have an optical counterpart, consistent with a cool main-sequence star of spectral type M3. The radio periodicity occurs at the longest period yet found, 2.9 hr, and was discovered in archival low-frequency data from the Murchison Widefield Array. High time resolution observations from MeerKAT show that pulsations from the source display complex microstructure and high linear polarisation, suggesting a pulsar-like emission mechanism occurring due to strong, ordered magnetic fields. The timing residuals, measured over more than a decade, show tentative evidence of a ∼6 yr modulation. The high Galactic latitude of the system and the M-dwarf star excludes a magnetar interpretation, suggesting a more likely M-dwarf/white dwarf binary scenario for this system.

Rotating radio transients (RRATs) are neutron stars emitting sporadic radio pulses. The unique emission of RRATs has been proposed to resemble those of known pulsar types, such as extreme nulling pulsars or pulsars with giant pulses. However, the presence of additional radiation beyond these sporadic pulses remains unclear. Through high-sensitivity observations and extended tracking, we detected the sequential weak emissions in two RRATs with relatively high surface magnetic fields ( B _s ∼ 10 ^13 G): J1846-0257 and J1854+0306. These emissions show peak flux densities of 0.15 and 0.41 mJy, up to 687 and 512 times weaker than our detected RRAT single pulses, respectively. The weak emissions contribute small fractions (~16% and 5%) to the total radio pulse energy releases, contrasting significantly with giant-pulse pulsars where normal pulses dominate. Polarization analysis of J1854+0306 suggests that its sporadic RRAT pulses may originate from intermittent enhanced sparking processes due to magnetospheric evolution. Our findings indicate that some RRATs may represent a novel class of pulsars, distinct from any previously known subclass. Further observations of sources with similar rotational properties using high-sensitivity instruments could validate the generality of these hidden emissions.

We report on the first self-consistent multidimensional particle-in-cell numerical simulations of nonhomogeneous pair discharges in polar caps of rotation-powered pulsars. By introducing strong inhomogeneities in the initial plasma distribution in our simulations, we analyze the degree of self-consistently emerging coherence of discharges across magnetic field lines. In 2D, we study discharge evolution for a wide range of physical parameters and boundary conditions corresponding to both the absent and free escape of charged particles from the surface of a neutron star. We also present the results of the first 3D simulations of discharges in a polar cap with a distribution of the global magnetospheric current appropriate for a pulsar with 60° inclination angle. For all parameters, we find the coherence scale of pair discharges across magnetic field lines to be of the order of the gap height. We also demonstrate that the popular “spark” model of pair discharges is incompatible with the universally adopted force-free magnetosphere model: intermittent discharges fill the entire zone of the polar cap that allows pair cascades, leaving no space for discharge-free regions. Our findings disprove the key assumption of the spark model about the existence of isolated distinct discharge columns.

We present the discovery of three pulsars in the globular cluster (GC) M15 (NGC 7078) by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope. PSR J2129+1210J (M15J) is a millisecond pulsar with a spin period of 11.84 ms and a dispersion measure of 66.68 pc cm ^−3 . Both PSR J2129+1210K and L (M15K and L) are long-period pulsars with spin periods of 1928 ms and 3961 ms, respectively. M15L is the GC pulsar with the longest spin period known. We update the timing solutions of M15A to M15H. As predicted by A. Ridolfi et al., the flux density of M15C keeps decreasing, and the latest detection in our data set was on 2022 December 20. We have also detected M15I’s signal for the first time since its discovery. Current timing suggests that it is an isolated pulsar.

Some giant pulses and fast radio bursts (FRBs) exhibit notable circular polarization, which remains unexplained and carries significant implications for their emission mechanisms. In this study, we identify multiple nanoshot pairs uniformly spaced by approximately 21 μ s within a giant pulse emitted by the Crab pulsar. Among these pairs, a subset displays left-hand and right-hand circular polarization in two distinct nanoshots. We propose that the occurrence of such nanoshot pairs with dual circular polarizations arises from the fragmentation of a linearly polarized nanoshot along the magnetic field lines under the extreme Faraday effect, leveraging highly asymmetrical pair plasma and the ultra-intense field of nanoshots. The asymmetry in pair plasmas is likely linked to discharge activities in pulsars. Moreover, the intense field of nanoshots induces cyclotron resonance within the magnetosphere, effectively slowing down the propagation velocity of the circularly polarized mode. Our findings suggest that Crab giant pulses composing nanoshots originate in its polar cap region and escape the magnetosphere along the polar magnetic field. This mechanism can also elucidate the origin of circular polarization in some FRBs and thus lends support to their magnetospheric origin.

The observation of neutron stars enables the otherwise impossible study of fundamental physical processes. The timing of binary radio pulsars is particularly powerful, as it enables precise characterization of their (three-dimensional) positions and orbits. PSR J0437–4715 is an important millisecond pulsar for timing array experiments and is also a primary target for the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). The main aim of the NICER mission is to constrain the neutron star equation of state by inferring the compactness ( M _p / R ) of the star. Direct measurements of the mass M _p from pulsar timing therefore substantially improve constraints on the radius R and the equation of state. Here we use observations spanning 26 yr from Murriyang, the 64 m Parkes radio telescope, to improve the timing model for this pulsar. Among the new precise measurements are the pulsar mass M _p = 1.418 ± 0.044 M _⊙ , distance D = 156.96 ± 0.11 pc, and orbital inclination angle i = 137.°506 ± 0.°016, which can be used to inform the X-ray pulse profile models inferred from NICER observations. We demonstrate that these results are consistent between multiple data sets from the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array (PPTA), each modeled with different noise assumptions. Using the longest available PPTA data set, we measure an apparent second derivative of the pulsar spin frequency and discuss how this can be explained either by kinematic effects due to the proper motion and radial velocity of the pulsar or excess low-frequency noise such as a gravitational-wave background.

In addition to being the most magnetic objects in the known Universe, magnetars are the only objects observed to generate fast-radio-burst-like emissions. The formation mechanism of magnetars is still highly debated and may potentially be probed with the magnetar velocity distribution. We carried out a 3 yr long astrometric campaign on Swift J1818.0−1607, the fastest-spinning magnetar, using the Very Long Baseline Array. After applying the phase-calibrating 1D interpolation strategy, we obtained a small proper motion of 8.5 mas yr ^−1 mag and a parallax of 0.12 ± 0.02 mas (uncertainties at 1 σ confidence throughout the Letter) for Swift J1818.0−1607. The latter is the second magnetar parallax and is among the smallest neutron star parallaxes ever determined. From the parallax, we derived the distance ${9.4}_{-1.6}^{+2.0}$ kpc, which locates Swift J1818.0−1607 at the far side of the Galactic central region. Combined with the distance, the small proper motion leads to a transverse peculiar velocity ${v}_{\perp }={48}_{-16}^{+50}$ km s ^−1 —a new lower limit to magnetar v _⊥ . Incorporating previous v _⊥ estimates of seven other magnetars, we acquired ${v}_{\perp }={149}_{-68}^{+132}$ km s ^−1 for the sample of astrometrically studied magnetars, corresponding to the three-dimensional space velocity $\sim {190}_{-87}^{+168}$ km s ^−1 , smaller than the average level of young pulsars. Additionally, we found that the magnetar velocity sample does not follow the unimodal young pulsar velocity distribution reported by Hobbs et al. at >2 σ confidence, while loosely agreeing with more recent bimodal young pulsar velocity distributions derived from relatively small samples of quality astrometric determinations.

The Parkes 20 cm multibeam pulsar surveys have discovered nearly half of the known pulsars and revealed many distant pulsars with high dispersion measures. Using a sample of 1301 pulsars from these surveys, we have explored the spatial distribution and birth rate of normal pulsars. The pulsar distances used to calculate the pulsar surface density are estimated from the YMW16 electron-density model. When estimating the impact of the Galactic background radiation on our survey, we projected pulsars in the galaxy onto the Galactic plane, assuming that the flux density distribution of pulsars is uniform in all directions, and utilized the most up-to-date background temperature map. We also used an up-to-date version of the ATNF Pulsar Catalogue to model the distribution of pulsar flux densities at 1400 MHz. We derive an improved radial distribution for the pulsar surface density projected onto the Galactic plane, which has a maximum value at ∼4 kpc from the Galactic center. We also derive the local surface density and birth rate of pulsars, obtaining 47 ± 5 kpc ^−2 and ∼4.7 ± 0.5 kpc ^−2 Myr ^−1 , respectively. For the total number of potentially detectable pulsars in the galaxy, we obtain (1.1 ± 0.2) × 10 ^4 and (1.1 ± 0.2)×10 ^5 before and after applying the Tauris & Manchester beaming correction model. The radial distribution function is used to estimate the proportion of pulsars in each spiral arm and the Galactic center.

We have conducted a detailed study of single-pulse emission from PSR J1722−3207, which was observed at 1369 MHz using the Parkes 64 m radio telescope. PSR J1722−3207 has an asymmetric two-component mean pulse profile. We find that the brighter leading component exhibits a periodic phase-stationary nondrift amplitude modulation while the trailing component remains unchanged. As a result of this, this pulsar switches between a strong state and a weak emission state periodically. Spectral analysis of the fluctuations showed that the modulation period is very short (∼2.0 s or 20 P), where P is the rotation period of the pulsar. The polarization properties of the strong and weak states were investigated. The swings in the position angle of the two states are similar, suggesting that their basic emission geometry is the same. At present, it is difficult to explain the periodic mode-changing phenomenon observed in this pulsar with existing subpulse drifting models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2017 the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observed the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), at a frequency of 228.1 GHz (λ = 1.3 mm). The fundamental physics tests that even a single pulsar orbiting Sgr A* would enable motivate searching for pulsars in EHT data sets. The high observing frequency means that pulsars—which typically exhibit steep emission spectra—are expected to be very faint. However, it also negates pulse scattering, an effect that could hinder pulsar detections in the Galactic center. Additionally, magnetars or a secondary inverse Compton emission could be stronger at millimeter wavelengths than at lower frequencies. We present a search for pulsars close to Sgr A* using the data from the three most sensitive stations in the EHT 2017 campaign: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the Large Millimeter Telescope, and the IRAM 30 m Telescope. We apply three detection methods based on Fourier-domain analysis, the fast folding algorithm, and single-pulse searches targeting both pulsars and burst-like transient emission. We use the simultaneity of the observations to confirm potential candidates. No new pulsars or significant bursts were found. Being the first pulsar search ever carried out at such high radio frequencies, we detail our analysis methods and give a detailed estimation of the sensitivity of the search. We conclude that the EHT 2017 observations are only sensitive to a small fraction (≲2.2%) of the pulsars that may exist close to Sgr A*, motivating further searches for fainter pulsars in the region. Using a relativistic plasma with an isotropic monoenergetic distribution of electrons and positrons as an example, we show that in the maser regime the maximum possible amplification of synchrotron radiation at a distance of one wavelength is achieved in a medium where the magnetic energy density is of the order of the particle energy density. This ratio of the energy densities corresponds to a (Harris-type) current sheet. We have obtained an electron Lorentz factor of 350 and a magnetic field strength of 10 kG in the maser radio emission region for the Crab pulsar. Our estimate suggests that the optical and coherent radio emissions of the object originate from one synchrotron source in the form of a current sheet. The diameter of the source must exceed the light-cylinder radius approximately by a factor of 6 for the maser wave field to interact with particles in the linear regime, in particular, to keep its phase velocity higher than the speed of light in a vacuum—a necessary condition for the synchrotron instability. The pulsar J0901–4046 has a spin period s and is the most slowly rotating one among the isolated radio pulsars. We have considered the influence of a small-scale magnetic field in the off-centered dipole model on the polar cap heating by the reverse positron current in the inner gap of the pulsar. We have assumed that the electron–positron pairs in the gap are created in bound states, which then are broken by thermal photons from the stellar surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Observations of the high-mass gamma-ray binary LS 2883/PSR B1259–63 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory during the 2011–2014 and 2014–2017 binary cycles have shown X-ray-emitting clumps, presumably ejected from the binary during periastron passages. These clumps traveled at projected velocities of ∼0.1 c and have shown evidence of being accelerated. The clumps also evolved in shape, size, and flux. We monitored this binary with Chandra during the 2017–2021 binary cycle to search for additional X-ray-emitting ejections. While we find evidence of extended emission in two of the six observations, it is unlike the clumps observed in the previous three binary cycles. More specifically, the extended emission is not well localized, and no bright clump is observed moving away from the binary. It is still unclear what caused the lack of X-ray-emitting clump in this orbital cycle, but it may be due to changes in the decretion disk of the Be star. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Calculations of angles between magnetic moments and rotation axes have been carried out for radio pulsars located at different distances from the "death line." We have shown that these angles decrease from 36° to 10° when pulsars move to the "death line". Such values correspond to kinematic ages from 1 to 10 millions of years. We also argue that radio luminosities of pulsars decrease for these ages. This means that radio pulsars fade out when their age increases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We did 194 epochs of simultaneous 2.25/8.60 GHz observations of XTE J1810−197 in 926 days shortly following its reactivation in 2018 with Shanghai Tian Ma Radio Telescope (TMRT). Although its integrated profiles changed with both time and frequency during this period, they could be classified into 12 types according to phase areas of active radiation components. After MJD 59015, XTE J1810−197 turned from the normal emission state into the spiky emission state that was manifesting as a series of bright narrow sub-pulse bursts at both 2.25 and 8.60 GHz. Due to its variable integrated profiles and unsteady rotations, we got the spin frequency ν and spin-frequency derivatives ν ̇ with the piecewise fitting method. In addition, its long-term declining trend of ν was also obtained as ν ̇ = − 3.2 (1) × 10 − 13 s−2 with the linear fitting method based on our observations spanning a comparatively longer period. We found its flux densities went through three stages: sharp decrease, stabilization, and day-to-day fluctuations in our dual-frequency observations. Although the flux density showed different stages, XTE J1810−197 showed a relatively flat spectrum (α > –1) in most observations. Assuming an ideal dipole magnetic field as some previous research works, we obtained the emission heights of XTE J1810−197 were about 7.5(9) × 104 km and 2.38(7) × 104 km at 2.25 and 8.60 GHz, respectively. We consider the evolutionary status of the recently discovered long-period radio sources PSR J0901-4046, GLEAM-X J1627-52, and GPM J1839-10. It is hypothesized that all three sources are radio pulsars. Within the framework of standard scenarios, it is thought that for the pulsar mechanism to operate, it is necessary to exclude the penetration of external matter into the light cylinder, which corresponds to the ejector stage. We show that for realistic properties of the interstellar medium the 76-second pulsar J0901-4046 must be at this stage, whereas the sources GLEAM-X J1627-52 and GPM J1839-10 with periods s can be at this stage only in the case of unrealistically high dipolar magnetic fields G. We also show that sources with periods s and magnetic fields G cannot be ejectors in a realistic interstellar medium. Radio frequency interference (RFI) mitigation for pulsar signals is a long perplexing issue in astrophysical measurements. Linear mitigation methods are often criticized for limited RFI excision range and weakness of RFI modeling. Meanwhile, thresholding methods (e.g., the SumThreshold) suffer from empirical factors. In our opinion, the main defect of the current status is the lack of a concise definition to distinguish signals from RFI with the aid of certain techniques, e.g., sparse representation. This point is the root cause of these problems and also forms our motivation. This paper aims to expand the excision range (e.g., the on-pulse and quasiperiodic RFI) and cut down some empirical factors. The main contribution is that we give a definition and derive a widely practicable nonlinear framework for RFI excision. This framework can overcome the susceptibility of the least-square criterion to RFI, and excise almost all types of RFI once and for all. A robust LnCosh criterion based nonlinear maximum likelihood-type (M-type) penalized smoothing estimator is introduced. The novelty is that this estimator is first embedded into the iterative shrinkage-thresholding algorithm (ISTA) and the fast ISTA. Nonlinearity highlights this method. Curvelet sparsity gives satisfying approximation for pulsar signals containing dispersion feature. Finally, useful signal details will be retrieved from the excision residual by a morphological component analysis. This method is applied to the time-frequency signals collected by the Nanshan 26 m Radio Telescope. The numerical experiments can persuasively prove that it has desired application prospects. Intensity scintillations of radio pulsars are known to originate from interference between waves scattered by the electron density irregularities of interstellar plasma, often leading to parabolic arcs in the two-dimensional power spectrum of the recorded dynamic spectrum. The degree of arc curvature depends on the distance to the scattering plasma and its transverse velocity with respect to the line of sight. We report the observation of annual and orbital variations in the curvature of scintillation arcs over a period of 16 yr for the bright millisecond pulsar, PSR J0437-4715. These variations are the signature of the relative transverse motions of Earth, the pulsar, and the scattering medium, which we model to obtain precise measurements of parameters of the pulsar's binary orbit and the scattering medium itself. We observe two clear scintillation arcs in most of our >5000 observations, and we show that they originate from scattering by thin screens located at distances D 1 = 89.8 ± 0.4 pc and D 2 = 124 ± 3 pc from Earth. The best-fit scattering model we derive for the brightest arc yields the pulsar's orbital inclination angle, i = 137.°1 ± 0.°3, and longitude of ascending node, Ω = 206.°3 ± 0.°4. Using scintillation arcs for precise astrometry and orbital dynamics can be superior to modeling variations in the diffractive scintillation timescale, because the arc curvature is independent of variations in the level of turbulence of interstellar plasma. This technique can be used in combination with pulsar timing to determine the full three-dimensional orbital geometries of binary pulsars and provides parameters essential for testing theories of gravity and constraining neutron star masses.

In this brief review, I summarize our basic knowledge about different types of isolated neutron stars. I discuss radio pulsars, central compact objects in supernova remnants, magnetars, nearby cooling neutron stars (also known as the magnificent seven), and sources of fast radio bursts. Several scenarios of magneto-rotational evolution are presented. Recent observational data, such as the discovery of long-period radio pulsars, require the non-trivial evolution of magnetic fields, the spin periods of neutron stars, or both. The phenomenon of pulsar nulling, observed as the temporary inactivity of a pulsar, remains poorly understood both observationally and theoretically. Most observational studies that quantify nulling employ a variant of Ritchings algorithm, which can suffer significant biases for pulsars where the emission is weak. Using a more robust mixture model method, we study pulsar nulling in a sample of 22 recently discovered pulsars, for which we publish the nulling fractions for the first time. These data clearly demonstrate biases of the former approach and show how an otherwise nonnulling pulsar can be classified as having significant nulls. We show that the population-wide studies that find a positive correlation of nulling with pulsar period/characteristic age can similarly be biased because of the bias in estimating the nulling fraction. We use our probabilistic approach to find the evidence for periodicity in the nulls in a subset of three pulsars in our sample. In addition, we also provide improved timing parameters for 17 of the 22 pulsars that had no prior follow-up. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Assuming that the pulsar rotation is braking due to angular momentum loss by magnetodipole radiation, magnetic field inductions given in the ATNF catalog are corrected. To this end, we used the angles β between the magnetic moment and the rotation axis of central neutron stars, previously calculated by three methods. The dependence of the obtained magnetic fields on the pulsar age is analyzed. It is shown that the magnetic field is damped on average for the time of the order of 1 Myr. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we review the basics of magneto-rotational properties of neutron stars focusing on spin-up/spin-down behavior at different evolutionary stages. The main goal is to provide equations for the spin frequency changes in various regimes (radio pulsar, propeller, accretor, etc.). Since presently the spin behavior of neutron stars at all stages remains a subject of many uncertainties, we review different suggestions made over the years in the literature.

A pulsar’s scintillation bandwidth is inversely proportional to the scattering delay, making accurate measurements of scintillation bandwidth critical to characterize unmitigated delays in efforts to measure low-frequency gravitational waves with pulsar timing arrays. In this pilot work, we searched for a subset of known pulsars within ∼97% of the data taken with the Puerto Rico Ultimate Pulsar Processing Instrument for the AO327 survey with the Arecibo telescope, attempting to measure the scintillation bandwidths in the data set by fitting to the 2D autocorrelation function of their dynamic spectra. We successfully measured 38 bandwidths from 23 pulsars (six without prior literature values), finding that: almost all of the measurements are larger than the predictions from NE2001 and YMW16 (two popular galactic models); NE2001 is more consistent with our measurements than YMW16; Gaussian fits to the bandwidth are more consistent with both electron density models than Lorentzian ones; and for the 17 pulsars with prior literature values, the measurements between various sources often vary by a few factors. The success of Gaussian fits may be due to the use of Gaussian fits to train models in previous work. The variance of literature values over time could relate to the scaling factor used to compare measurements, but also seems consistent with time-varying interstellar medium parameters. This work can be extended to the rest of AO327 to further investigate these trends, highlighting the continuing importance of large archival data sets for projects beyond their initial conception.

We develop a new method for studying the Galactic magnetic field along the spiral arms using pulsar Faraday rotation measures (RMs). Our new technique accounts for the dot-product nature of Faraday rotation and also splits the associated path integral into segments corresponding to particular zones along the line of sight. We apply this geometrically corrected, arm-by-arm technique to the low-latitude portion of a recently published set of Arecibo Faraday RMs for 313 pulsars, along with previously obtained RMs in the same regions. We find disparities >1 σ between the magnitude of the field above and below the plane in the Local Arm, Sagittarius Arm, Sagittarius-to-Scutum Interarm, Scutum Arm, and Perseus Arm. We find evidence for a single field reversal near the Local Arm–Sagittarius Arm boundary. Interestingly, our results suggest that this field reversal is dependent on latitude, occurring inside the Sagittarius Arm at negative Galactic latitudes and at the Local Arm–Sagittarius Arm boundary at positive Galactic latitudes. We discuss all of our results in the context of different models and other observational Galactic magnetic field analyses.

We present phase-connected timing ephemerides, polarization pulse profiles, and Faraday rotation measurements of 12 pulsars discovered by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) in the Commensal Radio Astronomy FAST Survey. The observational data for each pulsar span at least 1 yr. Among them, PSR J1840+2843 shows subpulse drifting, and five pulsars are detected to exhibit pulse nulling phenomena. PSR J0640−0139 and PSR J2031−1254 are isolated millisecond pulsars (MSPs) with stable spin-down rates ( $\dot{P}$ ) of 4.8981(6) × 10 ^−20 s s ^−1 and 6.01(2) × 10 ^−21 s s ^−1 , respectively. Additionally, one pulsar (PSR J1602−0611) is in a neutron star−white dwarf (WD) binary system with an 18.23-day orbit and a companion of ≤0.65 M _⊙ . PSR J1602−0611 has a spin period, companion mass, and orbital eccentricity that are consistent with the theoretical expectations for MSP−helium WD (He WD) systems. Therefore, we believe that it might be an MSP−He WD binary system. The locations of PSR J1751−0542 and PSR J1840+2843 on the $P-\dot{P}$ diagram are beyond the traditional death line. This indicates that FAST has discovered some low- $\dot{E}$ pulsars, contributing new samples for testing pulsar radiation theories. We estimated the distances of these 12 pulsars based on NE2001 and YMW16 electron density models, and our work enhances the data set for investigating the electron density model of the Galaxy.

We report on the results of an image-based search for pulsar candidates toward the Galactic bulge. We used mosaic images from the MeerKAT radio telescope that were taken as part of a 173 deg ^2 survey of the bulge and Galactic center of our Galaxy at L band (856–1712 MHz) in all four Stokes I , Q , U , and V . The image rms noise levels of 12–17 μ Jy ba ^−1 represent a significant increase in sensitivity over past image-based pulsar searches. Our primary search criterion was circular polarization, but we used other criteria, including linear polarization, in-band spectral index, compactness, variability, and multiwavelength counterparts to select pulsar candidates. We first demonstrate the efficacy of this technique by searching for polarized emission from known pulsars and comparing our results with measurements from the literature. Our search resulted in a sample of 75 polarized sources. Bright stars or young stellar objects were associated with 28 of these sources, including a small sample of highly polarized dwarf stars with pulsar-like steep spectra. Comparing the properties of this sample with the known pulsars, we identified 30 compelling candidates for pulsation follow-up, including two sources with both strong circular and linear polarization. The remaining 17 sources are either pulsars or stars, but we cannot rule out an extragalactic origin or image artifacts among the brighter, flat-spectrum objects.

Using observational data obtained with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope, we succeeded in identifying subcomponents of different pulse profile components of PSR B1822−09 by the phase-to-phase cross correlations between intensity sequences of single pulses. The determined number of the subcomponents and edges of the subcomponents are consistent with the results of Gaussian fitting on the mean pulse profiles of PSR B1822−09. According to the results, the main pulse (MP) in both the radio burst mode (B mode) and the radio-quiet mode (Q mode), the precursor (PC), and the interpulse (IP) of PSR B1822−09 are all composed of three subcomponents. The correlation coefficients between intensity sequences at different pulse phases reveal a positive correlation between the subcomponent C8 of the MP and C3 of the IP in the Q mode, and a positive correlation between C5 of the PC and C2 of the IP during the switching process from the B mode to the Q mode. These complex correlations present a challenge for the existing scenarios that describe relations between different pulse profile components. We proposed a hypothesis that different subcomponents correspond to different subpatches on the pulsar surface, and emissions from a subpatch reveal responses of the subpatch to some variations like the voltage in the magnetosphere. Therefore, correlations between different subcomponents depend on the responses of the subpatches to the variations.

A small fraction of fast radio bursts (FRBs) have been observed with multiple bursts, whereas most Galactic sources emitting radio pulses are known to repeat. Here we present the results of follow-up observations of two FRBs and four rotating radio transients (RRATs). Among these, only one RRAT has been observed with repeating pulses, with an estimated period of around 1.297047 s. For comparison, we reanalysed the Parkes archival follow-up observations in CSIRO’s data archive for all apparently one-off sources discovered by the Parkes telescopes, including 13 RRATs and 29 FRBs. In total, 3 RRATs are suggested to be repeaters, but no repeating signals were detected from the other sources. Reporting details of the nondetection observations for the apparently one-off sources would help investigate their origins, and catastrophic scenarios are worth proposing for both extragalactic and Galactic sources.

The polarization position angles (PPA) of time samples with high linear polarization often show two parallel tracks across the pulsar profile that follow the rotating vector model (RVM). This feature supports coherent curvature radiation (CCR) as the underlying mechanism of radio emission from pulsars, where the parallel tracks of the PPA represent the orthogonal extraordinary (X) and ordinary (O) eigenmodes of strongly magnetized pair plasma. However, the frequency evolution of these high linearly polarized signals remains unexplored. In this work, we explore the flux density spectral nature of high linearly polarized signals by studying the emission from PSR J0332+5434 over a frequency range between 300 and 750 MHz, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. The pulsar average profile comprises a central core and a pair of conal components. We find the high linearly polarized time samples to be broadband in nature, and in many cases, they resemble a narrow spiky feature in the conal regions. These spiky features are localized within a narrow pulse longitude over the entire frequency range, and their spectral shapes sometimes resemble an inverted parabolic shape. In all such cases, the PPA is exclusively along one of the orthogonal RVM tracks, likely corresponding to the X-mode. The inverted spectral shape can, in principle, be explained if the high linearly polarized emission in these time samples is formed due to the incoherent addition of CCR from a large number of charged solitons (charge bunches) exciting the X-mode.

Millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are abundant in globular clusters (GCs), which offer favorable environments for their creation. While the advent of recent, powerful facilities led to a rapid increase in MSP discoveries in GCs through pulsation searches, detection biases persist. In this work, we investigate the ability of current and future detections in GCs to constrain the parameters of the MSP population in GCs through a careful study of their luminosity function. Parameters of interest are the number of MSPs hosted by a GC, as well as the mean and the width of their luminosity function, which are typically affected by large uncertainties. While, as we show, likelihood-based studies can lead to ill-behaved posteriors on the size of the MSP population, we introduce a novel, likelihood-free analysis, based on marginal neural ratio estimation, which consistently produces well-behaved posteriors. We focus on the GC Terzan 5 (or Ter 5), which currently counts 48 detected MSPs. We find that 158 ${}_{-104}^{+294}$ MSPs should be hosted in this GC, but the uncertainty on this number remains large. We explore the performance of our new method on simulated Terzan 5-like data sets mimicking possible future observational outcomes. We find that significant improvement on the posteriors can be obtained by adding a reliable measurement of the diffuse radio emission of the GC to the analysis or by improving the detection threshold of current radio pulsation surveys by at least a factor of 2.

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are cosmological subsecond bursts of coherent radio emission, whose source is still unknown. To date, the Galactic magnetar SGR 1935 + 2154 is the only astrophysical object known to emit radio bursts akin to FRBs, albeit less powerful, supporting suggestions that FRBs originate from magnetars. Many remarkable properties of FRBs—e.g., the dichotomy between repeaters and one-off sources, and their power-law energy distributions (with typical index ∼2–3)—are not well understood yet. Moreover, the huge radio power released by the most active repeaters is challenging even for the magnetic energy reservoir of magnetars. Here, we assume that FRBs originate from corotating hotspots anchored in neutron star (NS) magnetospheres and occasionally get amplified by large factors via gravitational self-lensing in the strong NS field. We evaluate the probability of amplification and show that: (i) a power-law energy distribution of events ∝ E ^−(2−3) is generally expected; (ii) all FRB sources may be regarded as repeating, their appearance as one-off sources or repeaters being determined by the critical dependence of the amplification probability on the emission geometry and source orientation relative to Earth; and (iii) the most active repeaters, in particular, correspond to extremely rare and finely tuned orientations (∼1 in 10 ^6 ), leading to large probabilities of amplification that make their bursts frequently detectable. At the same time, their power release appears enhanced, typically by factors ≳10, easing their energy budget problem.

As one of the paradigm examples to probe into pulsar magnetospheric dynamics, PSR B0943+10 (J0946+0951) manifests representatively, showing a mode switch, orthogonal polarization, and subpulse drifting, frequently studied below 600 MHz. Here, both integrated and single pulses are studied at a high frequency (1.25 GHz) with FAST. The mode switch is studied using a profile decomposition method. A phase space evolution for the pulsar’s mode switch shows a strange-attractor-like pattern. The radiative geometry is proposed by fitting polarization position angles with the rotating vector model. The pulsar pulse profile is then mapped to the sparking locations on the pulsar surface, and the differences between the main pulse’s and the precursor component’s radiative processes may explain the X-ray’s synchronization with radio mode switch. Detailed single pulse studies on B0943+10's orthogonally polarized radiation are presented, which may support certain models of radiative transfer of polarized emission. In particular, the difference in orthogonal polarization modes’ circular polarization might reflect the cyclotron absorption in pulsar magnetospheres. B0943+10's B and Q modes evolve differently with frequency and have different proportions of orthogonal modes, which indicates possible magnetospheric changes during mode switch. For Q mode pulse profile, the precursor and the main pulse components are orthogonally polarized, and are probably originated from different depths in the magnetosphere. The findings could impact significantly on the pulsar electrodynamics and the radiative mechanism related.

Polarization observations of radio pulsars show that abrupt transitions in the polarization vector’s position angle can be accompanied by large excursions in the vector’s ellipticity angle, suggesting the vector passes near the right or left circular pole of the Poincaré sphere. The behavior of the angles can be explained by a transition in dominance of the orthogonal polarization modes or a vector rotation caused by a change in the phase difference between the modes. Four polarization models are examined to quantify and understand the behavior of the angles at a mode transition: coherent polarization modes, partially coherent modes, incoherent modes with nonorthogonal polarization vectors, and incoherent orthogonal modes with an elliptically polarized emission component. In all four models, the trajectory of the mode transition on the Poincaré sphere follows the geodesic that connects the orientations of the mode polarization vectors. The results from the models can be similar, indicating that the interpretation of an observed transition within the context of a particular model is not necessarily unique. The polarization fraction of the emission and the average ellipticity angle depend upon the statistical character of the mode intensity fluctuations. The polarization fraction increases as the fluctuations increase. The excursion in ellipticity angle can be large when the mode intensities are quasi-stable and is suppressed when the intensity fluctuations are large.

This study presents an orbital-phase-dependent analysis of three black widow spider millisecond pulsars (BW MSPs), aiming to investigate the magnetic field within the eclipse environment. The ultrawide-bandwidth low-frequency receiver of the Parkes Murriyang radio telescope is utilized for full polarization observations covering frequencies from 704−4032 MHz. Depolarization of pulsed emission is observed during the eclipse phase of three BW MSPs, namely PSR J0024−7204J, PSR J1431−4715, and PSR J1959+2048, consistent with previous studies of other BW MSPs. We estimated orbital-phase-dependent rotation measure values for these MSPs. The wide bandwidth observations also provided constraints on the eclipse cutoff frequency for these BW MSPs. For PSR J0024−7204J, we report temporal variation of the eclipse cutoff frequency coupled with changes in the electron column density within the eclipse medium across six observed eclipses. Moreover, the eclipse cutoff frequency for PSR J1431−4715 is determined to be 1251 ± 80 MHz, leading to the conclusion that synchrotron absorption is the primary mechanism responsible for the eclipsing. Additionally, for PSR J1959+2048, the estimated cutoff frequency exceeded 1400 MHz, consistent with previous studies. With this investigation, we have doubled the sample size of BW MSPs with orbital-phase-resolved studies, allowing a better probe of the eclipse environment.

Rotating radio transients (RRATs) are neutron stars that emit sporadic radio bursts. We detected 1955 single pulses from RRAT J1913+1330 using the 19 beam receiver of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope. These pulses were detected in 19 distinct clusters, with 49.4% of them occurring with a waiting time of one rotation period. The energy distribution of these individual pulses exhibited a wide range, spanning 3 orders of magnitude, reminiscent of repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs). Furthermore, we observed abrupt variations in pulse profile, width, peak flux, and fluence between adjacent sequential pulses. These findings suggest that this RRAT could be interpreted as a pulsar with extreme pulse-to-pulse modulation. The presence of sequential pulse trains during active phases, along with significant pulse variations in profile, fluence, flux, and width, should be intrinsic to a subset of RRATs. Our results indicate that J1913+1330 represents a peculiar source that shares certain properties with populations of nulling pulsars, giant pulses, and FRBs from different perspectives. The dramatic pulse-to-pulse variation observed in J1913+1330 could be attributed to unstable pair creation above the polar cap region and the variation of the site where streaming pairs emit coherently. Exploring a larger sample of RRATs exhibiting similar properties to J1913+1330 has the potential to significantly advance our understanding of pulsars, RRATs, and FRBs.

Pulsar–black hole (BH) close binary systems, which have not been found yet, are unique laboratories for testing theories of gravity and understanding the formation channels of gravitational-wave sources. We study the self-gravitational lensing effect in a pulsar–BH system on the pulsar’s emission. Because this effect occurs once per orbital period for almost edge-on binaries, we find that it could generate apparently ultralong period (minutes to hours) radio signals when the intrinsic pulsar signal is too weak to detect. Each of such lensed signals, or “pulse,” is composed of a number of amplified intrinsic pulsar pulses. We estimate that a radio telescope with a sensitivity of 10 mJy could detect a few systems that emit such signals in our Galaxy. The model is applied to three recently found puzzling long-period radio sources: GLEAM-X J1627, PSR J0901-4046, and GPM J1839-10. To explain their observed signal durations and periods, the masses of their lensing components are estimated as ∼10 ^4 M _⊙ , ∼4 M _⊙ , and 10 ^3−6 M _⊙ , respectively, with their binary coalescence times ranging from a few tens to thousands of years. However, the implied merger rates (as high as ∼10 ^3−4 Myr ^−1 per galaxy) and the large period decay rates (>10 ^−8 s s ^−1 ) tend to disfavor this self-lensing scenario for these three sources. Despite this, our work still provides observational characteristics for self-lensed pulsar–BH binaries, which could help the detection of related sources in the future. Finally, for a binary containing a millisecond pulsar and a stellar-mass BH, the Shapiro delay effect would cause a ≥10% variation of the profile width for the subpulses in such lensed signals.

We present a population synthesis model for normal radio pulsars in the Galaxy incorporating the latest developments in the field and the magnetorotational evolution processes. Our model considers spin-down with a force-free magnetosphere and the decay of the magnetic field strength and its inclination angle. The simulated pulsar population is fit to a large observation sample that covers the majority of radio surveys using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique. We compare the distributions of four major observables—spin period ( P ), spin-down rate ( $\dot{P}$ ), dispersion measure, and radio flux density—using accurate high-dimensional Kolmogorov–Smirnov statistics. We test two B -field decay scenarios, an exponential model motivated by ohmic dissipation and a power-law model motivated by the Hall effect. The former clearly provides a better fit, and it can successfully reproduce the observed pulsar distributions with a decay timescale of ${8.3}_{-3.0}^{+3.9}$ Myr. The result suggests that significant B -field decay in aged pulsars and ohmic dissipation could be the dominant process.

We use cyclic spectroscopy to perform high-frequency resolution analyses of multihour baseband Arecibo observations of the millisecond pulsar PSR B1937+21. This technique allows for the examination of scintillation features in far greater detail than is otherwise possible under most pulsar timing array observing setups. We measure scintillation bandwidths and timescales in each of eight subbands across a 200 MHz observing band in each observation. Through these measurements we obtain intra-epoch estimates of the frequency scalings for scintillation bandwidth and timescale. Thanks to our high-frequency resolution and the narrow scintles of this pulsar, we resolve scintillation arcs in the secondary spectra due to the increased Nyquist limit, which would not have been resolved at the same observing frequency with a traditional filterbank spectrum using NANOGrav’s current time and frequency resolutions, and the frequency-dependent evolution of scintillation arc features within individual observations. We observe the dimming of prominent arc features at higher frequencies, possibly due to a combination of decreasing flux density and the frequency dependence of the plasma refractive index of the interstellar medium. We also find agreement with arc curvature frequency dependence predicted by Stinebring et al. in some epochs. Thanks to the frequency-resolution improvement provided by cyclic spectroscopy, these results show strong promise for future such analyses with millisecond pulsars, particularly for pulsar timing arrays, where such techniques can allow for detailed studies of the interstellar medium in highly scattered pulsars without sacrificing the timing resolution that is crucial to their gravitational-wave detection efforts.

This paper presents an investigation of the spectral properties of 10 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) discovered by the uGMRT, observed from 2017 to 2023 using band 3 (300–500 MHz) and 4 (550–750 MHz) of the uGMRT. For these MSPs, we have reported a range of spectral indices from ∼0 to −4.8, while averaging the full observing band and all the observing epochs. For every MSP, we calculated the mean flux density across 7–8 subbands, each with approximately 25 MHz bandwidth spanning band 3 and band 4. We computed their modulation indices as well as average and maximum-to-median flux density within each subband. Using the temporal variations of the flux density we calculated the refractive scintillation timescales and estimated a structure function with a time lag for eight MSPs in the sample. We note a significant temporal evolution of the in-band spectra, classified into three categories based on the nature of the best-fit power-law spectra, having single positive spectral indices, multiple broken power laws, and single negative spectral indices. Additionally, indications of a low-frequency turnover and temporal variations of the turnover frequency (to the extent that turnover was observed for some of the epochs while not seen for the rest) were noted for all the MSPs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic investigation probing temporal changes in MSP spectra as well as in the turnover frequency. Future exploration with dense monitoring combined with the modeling of spectra can provide vital insight into the intrinsic emission properties of MSPs and interstellar medium properties.
