Gel dosimetry was developed in the 1990s in response to a growing need for methods to validate the radiation dose distribution delivered to cancer patients receiving high-precision radiotherapy. Three different classes of gel dosimeters were developed and extensively studied. The first class of gel dosimeters is the Fricke gel dosimeters, which consist of a hydrogel with dissolved ferrous ions that oxidize upon exposure to ionizing radiation. The oxidation results in a change in the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation, which makes it possible to read out Fricke gel dosimeters by use of quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The radiation-induced oxidation in Fricke gel dosimeters can also be visualized by adding an indicator such as xylenol orange. The second class of gel dosimeters is the radiochromic gel dosimeters, which also exhibit a color change upon irradiation but do not use a metal ion. These radiochromic gel dosimeters do not demonstrate a significant radiation-induced change in NMR properties. The third class is the polymer gel dosimeters, which contain vinyl monomers that polymerize upon irradiation. Polymer gel dosimeters are predominantly read out by quantitative MRI or X-ray CT. The accuracy of the dosimeters depends on both the physico-chemical properties of the gel dosimeters and on the readout technique. Many different gel formulations have been proposed and discussed in the scientific literature in the last three decades, and scanning methods have been optimized to achieve an acceptable accuracy for clinical dosimetry. More recently, with the introduction of the MR-Linac, which combines an MRI-scanner and a clinical linear accelerator in one, it was shown possible to acquire dose maps during radiation, but new challenges arise. This study relates to the INFN project SYRMA‐3D for in vivo phase‐contrast breast computed tomography using the SYRMEP synchrotron radiation beamline at the ELETTRA facility in Trieste, Italy. This peculiar imaging technique uses a novel dosimetric approach with respect to the standard clinical procedure. In this study, optimization of the acquisition procedure was evaluated in terms of dose delivered to the breast. An offline dose monitoring method was also investigated using radiochromic film dosimetry. Various irradiation geometries have been investigated for scanning the prone patient's pendant breast, simulated by a 14 cm‐diameter polymethylmethacrylate cylindrical phantom containing pieces of calibrated radiochromic film type XR‐QA2. Films were inserted mid‐plane in the phantom, as well as wrapped around its external surface, and irradiated at 38 keV, with an air kerma value that would produce an estimated mean glandular dose of 5 mGy for a 14 cm‐diameter 50% glandular breast. Axial scans were performed over a full rotation or over 180°. The results point out that a scheme adopting a stepped rotation irradiation represents the best geometry to optimize the dose distribution to the breast. The feasibility of using a piece of calibrated radiochromic film wrapped around a suitable holder around the breast to monitor the scan dose offline is demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we present for the first time three-dimensional (3D) gel dosimeters for 3D UV dose distribution measurements. These new gel dosimeters are aqueous compositions containing 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride or 4,4′ -benzylidenebis( N,N -dimethylaniline) (leucomalachite green) and poly(ethylene oxide)- block -poly(propylene oxide)- block -poly(ethylene oxide) (Pluronic F-127), which form a physical gel matrix. The unique feature of these gels is their high transparency and colourlessness, comparable to crystal clear water. This differentiates them from 3D gel dosimeter compositions that are made of gelatine and used for radiotherapy dosimetry purposes only. If UV irradiated, the gels become coloured (red or green); the colour depends on the radiation sensitive compound in the composition. Both gels were examined versus UVA (range: 315–400 nm; a peak at 369 nm), UVB (range: 280–360 nm; a peak at 306 nm) and UVC (253.7 nm) irradiation. The typical parameters of such dosimeters were derived after obtaining their calibrations: linear dose range, dynamic dose range, dose threshold and dose sensitivity, as well as the UV subranges to which the gels were the most sensitive. The 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride gels were the most sensitive to UVA radiation, whereas the leucomalachite green gels were sensitive to UVB. The highest dose sensitivity of the gels was obtained for 3 mmol/dm 3 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride and 7 mmol/dm 3 leucomalachite green, which amounted to 3.60 ± 0.12 and 42.85 ± 1.53 cm 2 /J, respectively (the linear dose range was equal to 0.15–0.9 and 0–0.3 J/cm 2 ; respectively, and the dynamic dose range was equal to 0–2 and 0–5 J/cm 2 , respectively). The 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride gels were more sensitive to UVA but less sensitive to UVB and UVC than the leucomalachite green gels. Additionally, the gel dosimeters were examined with respect to their temporal stability, dose response for fractionated and non-fractionated doses as well as the repeatability and spatial stability of the dose distribution. The spatial stability results obtained suggested that 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride gels keep the dose distribution integral for over 10 days after irradiation, contrary to the leucomalachite green gels that lose it soon after irradiation. However, this does not disqualify the leucomalachite green gels from use as 3D radiation dosimeters, on the condition that they are measured in 3D soon after irradiation. The proposed gel dosimeters can be used as UV dose sensors, 1D UV dosimeters or 3D high resolution dosimeters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This work describes a new form of the calibration curve for radiochromic dosimetry that depends on one fit parameter. Some results are reported to show that the new curve performs as well as those previously used and, more importantly, significantly reduces the dependence on the lot of films, the film orientation on the scanner, and the time after exposure. Methods: The form of the response curve makes use of the net optical densities ratio against the dose and has been studied by means of the Beer-Lambert law and a simple modeling of the film. The new calibration curve has been applied to EBT3 films exposed at 6 and 15 MV energy beams of linear accelerators and read-out in transmission mode by means of a flatbed color scanner. Its performance has been compared to that of two established forms of the calibration curve, which use the optical density and the net optical density against the dose. Four series of measurements with four lots of EBT3 films were used to evaluate the precision, accuracy, and dependence on the time after exposure, orientation on the scanner and lot of films. Results: The new calibration curve is roughly subject to the same dose uncertainty, about 2% (1 standard deviation), and has the same accuracy, about 1.5% (dose values between 50 and 450 cGy), as the other calibration curves when films of the same lot are used. Moreover, the new calibration curve, albeit obtained from only one lot of film, shows a good agreement with experimental data from all other lots of EBT3 films used, with an accuracy of about 2% and a relative dose precision of 2.4% (1 standard deviation). The agreement also holds for changes of the film orientation and of the time after exposure. Conclusions: The dose accuracy of this new form of the calibration curve is always equal to or better than those obtained from the two types of curves previously used. The use of the net optical densities ratio considerably reduces the dependence on the lot of films, the landscape/portrait orientation, and the time after exposure. Purpose Triple channel algorithm and specific procedures make more reliable radiochromic dosimetry for treatment planning verification and quality assurance in radiation therapy. A tool to obtain radiochromic dose distributions and compare them with the ones resulting from a treatment planning system was developed and applied. Methods The tool was developed as Microsoft Excel macro; it builds dose calibration curves against net optical density of Gafchromic EBT3 film, produces axial, coronal and sagittal dose maps and allows to evaluate them against dose distributions calculated by the Varian treatment planning system Eclipse using gamma index and gamma angle. Results The net optical density standard errors of estimate of calibration curves at 6 MV Varian DBX600 linac energy were 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.2% for the red, green and blue channels. Tests of these curves by means of three independent eight dose points measurement series, at 15 MV and 6 MV Varian 2100C linac and at 6 MV DBX600 linac energies, showed less than 2% of dose errors for the red channel and less than 3% for the green channel in the range 100–450 cGy. The comparisons between dose distributions from Gafchromic EBT3 triple channel algorithm and the ones from Eclipse analytic anisotropic algorithm (AAA) showed values of gamma index 95th percentile between 0.6 and 1.0.
