The modern concept of the development of atherosclerosis implies that the underlying pathogenesis of this disease is vascular remodeling as a response of the vessel wall to hypertension associated with hyperlipidemia and subsequent inflammation. However, even though this disease has been investigated for decades, both from a basic and clinical research aspect, there are still many doubts as to what the initial phase of the disease is. In contemporary literature there are an increasing number of papers that stress the importance of the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the blood vessels connective tissue, particularly proteoglycans, in the formation of early atherosclerotic lesions of human coronary arteries.

Atherosclerosis represents a complex disease which encompasses all the components of the vascular wall. Nevertheless, according to all known theories of the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, the key role in this process belongs to the endothelial cells, i.e. the changes that they are subjected to especially during the initial stage of the lesion. In this review we have attempted, according to the results of our continuous research and numerous data from available modern literature, to show the cytohistological characteristics of endothelial cells, as well as the changes they are subjected to in all stages of atherosclerosis. In the first part we have reviewed the ultrastructure, function and pathology of the endothelium, subcellular organization of the endothelial cells, their specific characteristics, micro compartments and intercellular junctions. In the second part we have described the morphological and functional changes of endothelial cells during atherosclerosis. Special attention is given to the role of endothelial cells in the development of the initial stage of lesion: endothelial dysfunction, factors that cause the increased expression of adhesion molecules in endothelial cells and mechanisms that cause leukocytes to migrate through the endothelial layer to subendothelial connective tissue in the early stage of atherosclerosis.

The use of bioenergy crops such as Miscanthus x giganteus in phytoremediation could have both environmental and economic benefits, such as biomass production and soil conservation for crops. In our previous work, we showed that rhizobacteria from the rhizosphere of M. x giganteus stimulated metal extraction and uptake and enhanced the phytoremediation ability of treated M. x giganteus. In the present study, we conducted transcriptome analysis and qPCR to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying these interactions in response to bacterial treatment by identifying the candidate genes involved in growth and development processes and metal uptake. Using high-throughput RNA sequencing of root samples, we found that 5134 and 4758 genes were up- and downregulated in plants treated with the rhizobacteria consortium. Gene ontology analysis showed that the upregulated DEGs were significantly enriched in 32 terms, while the downregulated genes were significantly enriched in 63 terms. Our results confirmed the increased expression of two genes: the multidrug and toxic compound extrusion, also known as multi-antimicrobial extrusion (MATE) 40, known for its role in plant response to biotic and abiotic stress, and COBRA-like protein 1 belonging to the COBRA-like (COBL) gene family, which encodes a putative glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored protein involved in cell wall thickening, cell elongation, and biomass increase when compared to untreated plants. We present the first insight into a mechanism whereby the interaction between the rhizobacterial consortium and M. x giganteus fosters plant growth and enhances its capacity for phytoremediation.

In the past decades, Belgrade experienced a significant transformation of its downtown area also with regards to an increasing number of public spaces turned into pedestrian zones, primarily by closing roads for automotive transport, and establishing new pedestrian zones. This trend of pedestrianization of urban cores in Europe (initiated in the mid-20th century), found its strongest expression in Belgrade in the eighties with the complete transformation of Knez Mihailova street and its paving, and later with the expansion of the pedestrian zone to the adjoining streets. With the beginning of the 21st century, a special rise of a commercialized type of “street life” occurred - an increasing number of outdoor restaurant facilities were established. In the last twenty years, the services sector has become one of the most important in the city’s economy, and the tourism and hospitality industry employs a significant number of people; thus, the urban public space is increasingly adapting to the needs of consumers of such services, residents and guests alike. The visible expansion of restaurant facilities on public pedestrian areas in Belgrade raises questions about priorities in the use of public space. This paper will examine questions of space use, pedestrian mobility, and hospitality industries.

The paper presents an overview of some major paradigmatic and thematic currents developing in ethnology (or ethnologies) in what used to be Yugoslavia and after the breakup of this country; these processes are discussed also by monitoring the evolution of institutions and through dynamics in numerously small disciplinary communities of ethnologists/anthropologists. After almost a hundred years of relatively slow paradigmatic, yet intensive institutional development, ethnological communities in this part of Europe accelerated their uplift in the last quarter of the 20th century with their theoretical modernization (sometimes also coined ‘anthropologization’), which is in the most recent times followed by acceleration in overall scholarly production (bordering on proliferation), of research topics and outputs (which can also be dubbed as ‘projectification’), much in line with trends enveloping in the global scientific markets. The paper calls upon a renewed collaboration between academic and museological anthropology as a potential impetus for increasing the discipline’s local relevance and for the creation of new research areas.

This paper discusses questions of ethnological research in cities and urban topics in Serbian ethnology from the end of the World War II until the end of the socialist era. Inquiry focuses on theoretical and methodological standpoints implemented in urban research, which segments of culture and everyday life in the cities were most prominent in research at the time, and in what cities field research had been taking place. Paper primarily addresses ethnological research in urban areas undertaken at the Institute of Ethnography SASA in socialist times, whilst these insights could prove relevant for interpretation of wider paradigmatic and thematic shifts in Serbian ethnology/anthropology. Explanation is based on published and unpublished sources (from the documentation and archives of the Institute of Ethnography).

Tussilago farfara (coltsfoot) and Verbascum thapsus (mullein) have been used as folk remedies for treating respiratory disorders. The aim of this study was to test the toxicity of the water extracts of T. farfara and V. thapsus in vivo in zebrafish and in vitro in BEAS 2B epithelial bronchial cells. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the antioxidative properties of T. farfara and V. thapsus extracts in cell culture. Our results show that the T. farfara leaf extract does not produce toxic effects on zebrafish embryos or BEAS 2B cells, and that it has a protective effect in BEAS 2B after induction of oxidative stress. The water extract from V. thapsus displayed pronounced toxic effects on zebrafish embryos and BEAS 2B cells and did not exhibit a significant antioxidative effect on BEAS 2B cells exposed to oxidative stress. Our results suggest that the use of T. farfara water leaf extract is potentially safe and effective in treating respiratory disorders, whereas the use of V. thapsus needs further investigation. ABSTRACT This paper presents palaeoecological and taphonomic analyses of bird remains from Late Pleistocene sediments from two caves in southern Istria, Šandalja II and Ljubićeva pećina. Most of the identified species are found today in Istria and along the Adriatic coast, although the presence of ptarmigan ( Lagopus mutus) and willow grouse ( L. lagopus) indicates colder conditions than those characteristic of the region today. Taxa from both sites are characteristic of open, forest-steppe, rocky, forest, and mixed biotopes. These sites differ somewhat in avifaunal composition - aquatic-adapted taxa are only found at Šandalja II, probably reflecting differences in human activities and in their geographic settings. Likewise, only Šandalja's assemblages show an increase in the representation of forest-adapted taxa over time. These data from the bird remains complement reconstructions based on mammalian assemblages from these sites. Different taphonomic agents accumulated the bird bones, and bone surface modifications show that birds of prey, small carnivores, and Late Upper Palaeolithic people helped accumulate these remains. The important Late Pleistocene avifaunal assemblages from southern Istria indicate that a mosaic of habitats was present during the Late Pleistocene and a deep time depth to the rich biodiversity of the region today. Interactions between plants and herbivorous insects can be shaped by light environment, resulting in differential herbivory in sun and shade. In dioecious species, the combination of plant sex and light-induced changes in defense traits and nutritive value can alter the patterns of foliar damage. We explored the combined effects of light environment and plant sex on natural herbivore damage and plant traits in the dioecious understory forb Mercurialis perennis on Mt. Kopaonik (Serbia). The role of plant traits in predicting the extent of damage was examined as well. Male and female plants from contrasting light environments (shade vs. sun) were analyzed with respect to leaf damage, as well as plant morphological and biochemical traits (size, specific leaf area, carbon-based defensive compounds and nutritional quality). We found prominent differences in herbivore damage between sun and shade conditions, but not between the sexes. Plants from the sun-exposed site had a significantly larger leaf area removed. The specific leaf area co-varied with herbivore damage in an inverse fashion, while leaf nutritional value had a moderate effect. Contrasting light conditions influenced the patterns of intersexual differences in the contents of condensed tannins and soluble proteins, with females exhibiting higher trait values. We found that factors defining risk of consumption were related to plant morphological traits and nutritive value rather than to chemical defenses. The article examines the archaeobotanical and molecular analysis of the early Iron age Hissar pea and charred pea found in the Balkan Peninsula. The study suggests that the pea seeds are often poorly represented in the archaeobotanical records due to the difficulties related to their proper determination. It notes that the results of the study encourages future research to use standard DNA extraction procedures.

Given the relative neglect of photography as an empirical material in national research practice, this paper offers some insight into the possibilities and ways of using photography as a research technique, that is, data collection method. After presenting main historical influences the text considers the methodological features of the use of photography as a data - a visual record and a visual diary, some application areas, restrictions on this type of empirical material and procedures developed in order to overcome them. The third part of the paper discusses basic features of the use of photography as a technique to uncover other data (Photo- Interviewing) with a detailed focus on research with children in which this technique gained considerable popularity. Concluding remarks point to the usefulness of the acceptance of photography as a means of creating empirical material in national studies.

The Iris flower is a complex morphological structure composed of two trimerous whorls of functionally distinct petaloid organs (the falls and the standards), one whorl of the stamens and one tricarpellary gynoecium. The petal-like style arms of the carpels are banded over the basal part of the falls, forming three pollination tunnels, each of which is perceived by the Iris pollinators as a single bilaterally symmetrical flower. Apart from the stamens, all petaloid floral organs are preferentially involved in advertising rewards to potential pollinators. Here we used the methods of geometric morphometrics to explore the shape variation in falls, standards and style arms of the Iris pumila flowers and to disentangle the symmetric and the asymmetric component of the total shape variance. Our results show that symmetric variation contributes mostly to the total shape variance in each of the three floral organs. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) was the dominant component of the asymmetric shape variation in the falls and the standards, but appeared to be marginally significant in the style arms. The values of FA indexes for the shape of falls (insects’ landing platforms) and for the shape of standards (long-distance reward signals) were found to be two orders of magnitude greater compared to that of the style arms. Directional asymmetry appeared to be very low, but highly statistically significant for all analyzed floral organs. Because floral symmetry can reliably indicate the presence of floral rewards, an almost perfect symmetry recorded for the style arm shape might be the outcome of pollinator preferences for symmetrical pollination units. Naming and renaming of streets and other public spaces is an area of research interest of several social sciences; street names (odonyms), particularly official street names, are seen as symbols in urban space which cater for various politics of identity and memory. This paper compares odonomastic landscapes (urban onomastic landscapes) of Ljubljana and Belgrade, more precisely their segments which commemorate Slovenia and Slovenians in Belgrade, and on the other side Serbia and Serbian persons in Ljubljana. The focus of discussion is street (re)naming in capitals of Serbia and Slovenia from the 19th century till present (encompassing the periods of the long nineteenth century, interbellum Yugoslavia, World War Two, socialist Yugoslavia, and present independent states). Streets and squares named after members of these two nations, and after terms and toponyms from these two countries (which are a part of the urban nomenclature of the two capitals), indirectly point out to types of symbolic connections established between Serbia and Slovenia in the last hundred years or more.

Starting from the theories that prolong mayor influence of media as the agency of socialization and criticism of gender representation in the media, in this work we observed whether the image of women in Disney’s animated films has changed during the time, and if so, in which way the change happened. Basic dimensions of gender roles of the heroines that have been placed in one of the most influential franchises named Disney’s Princesses are described in the essay. More precisely, all of the 12 animated films and 13 heroines that had been emerging from 1937 to 2013 were embraced in the analysis. During the research close attention has been given to the activities heroines are committed to, communications they make, their physical appearance, goals, and also the attitude towards marriage and sexuality. The main finding is that the „oldest” heroines (those who appeared between 1937 and 1959) are represented in accordance with the expectations of the patriarchal culture of the period (an obedient and a hardworking woman, excluded from a society, with getting married as her only life goal), while the latter princesses are presented in a highly different manner, being independent, educated and rebellious. Also the analysis showed that with the princesses that made appearance during the last decade, various trends have appeared. It turned out that some of them have chosen the road of emancipation while the other ones show indications of retraditionalization.

This paper presents different conceptions of the physical space in social theory aiming to review the consequences that they as metatheoretical assumptions have to the treatment and position of the spatial dimensions of the city in sociological analysis. The first part presents characteristics of the absolute concept of physical space and indicates the different implications of the adoption of this concept in urban sociology. After that, the text considers features of the relational concept of physical space whose adoption enabled the spatial turn in thesocial science, and its adequacy to the contemporary social context of movement, permeation, interaction between people, capital, goods and cultures. The third part highlights, the importance of understanding space as the product and context of practice - of produced, and not given, for the conceptualization of physical space as an inherent quality of social space, inseparable from time and the symbolic and subjective meanings. The conclusion points to the relevance of adopting Lefebvre’s production of space concept through representations of space, spatial practices and representations of space as an analytical framework for studying spatial form of city as the overall dimensions of social life.

Introduction. Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a defect of the diaphragm with the penetration of organs of the abdominal cavity into thorax. Localization and size of the defect of the diaphragm condition the time and range of clinical manifestation. The most common is unilateral, without hernia sac, located on the left side, through posterolateral opening of the diaphragm and with clinical manifestation during the neonatal period. Smaller subgroup consists of patients with presentation outside the neonatal period with anatomic defect on the right side as is the case with our patient. Case Outline. Female infant aged seven months was hospitalized because of repeated episodes of shortness of breath and cough, with lack of progress in body weight. The discomforts had been present for the previous two months with an inadequate response to bronchodilator and antibiotic therapy used. After clinical, radiographic, ultrasound and computed tomography treatment, the right-sided diaphragmatic hernia was diagnosed, so surgical treatment followed. The defect of the diaphragm with hernia sac, through which the right lobe of the liver with visible line of entrapment, in the form of “hourglass”, is pushed into thoracic cavity, was intraoperatively identified. The reposition of the right lobe of the liver in the abdominal cavity along with reconstruction of the diaphragm using interrupted mattress sutures was performed. Conclusion. The late manifestation of CDH should be suspected in cases of inexplicable acute or chronic respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms with pathological radiography of the thorax. Accurate diagnosis and timely minimally invasive surgical intervention ensure an excellent prognosis.

Introduction. Meckel’s diverticulum (MD) is the most prevalent congenital anomaly of small intestine. It develops due to the incomplete obliteration of omphalomesenterict duct which normally undergoes obliteration during the seventh week of gestation. In the majority of cases MD is asymptomatic but it may cause various complications, such as bleeding, intestinal obstruction and inflammation. Cases of umbilical sinuses, fistulas and neoplasms related with MD have been reported, but extremely rare gangrene due to its axial torsion, especially in children, as is the case of our patients. Case Outline. An 11-year-old boy admitted to hospital due to 24 hours epigastric pain, vomiting and malaise. After a complete physical examination, and appropriate pre-surgical laboratory and radiographic tests, surgical exploration was performed with a midline abdominal incision. On 60th cm proximal to the ileocecal valve we found a long and in a narrow based ganrenous MD with axial torsion and fibrotic cord extending from the tip of MD to the ileal mesentery. Surrounding ileum had normal appearance. A demarcation and subsequent resection of MD and the surrounding ileum was performed with endto- end ileal anastomosis. Postoperative recovery was successful and the patient was discharged after six days. Conclusion. Axial torsion of MD is presented with non-specific abdominal symptoms and difficult preoperative diagnosis. The choice of diagnosis and therapy is surgical exploration and resection of MD.

Nine Lactobacillus strains known for surface proteinase activity were chosen from our collection and tested for their ability to grow in pea seed protein-based medium, and to hydrolyze purified pea proteins in order to produce peptides with antioxidant (AO) activity. Two strains, Lactobacillus rhamnosus BGT10 and Lactobacillus zeae LMG17315, exhibited strong proteolytic activity against pea proteins. The AO activity of the pea hydrolysate fraction, MW

The phenolic composition of seed coats in four differently colored pea varieties (Pisum sativum L.) was investigated using UHPLC-LTQ OrbiTrap MS. The obtained findings revealed that the seed coats of the examined pea genotypes possess a unique phenolic composition compared to previously studied European cultivars. In total, 41 phenolic compounds have been identified. The seed coats of the studied cultivars contained certain amounts of rosmarinic acid, rutin, galangin, morin, naringin, hesperetin and pinocembrin as well as ten flavonol glycosides that had not been reported previously. Additionally, the total phenolic content, antioxidant activity and metal chelating capacity of extracts was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu’s method, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assay, ferric ion-reducing capacity and ferrous ion-chelating capacity assay, respectively. Dark colored genotypes MBK 168 and MBK 173 possessed the highest total phenolic contents as well the strongest antioxidant activities. On the other hand, bright colored genotypes MBK 88 and MBK 90 exhibited the strongest metal-chelating capacities. The examined pea seed coats may be considered as important potential contributors to human health due to the presence of bioactive phenolic constituents. In addition, our results could be used as a guideline for breeding new pea cultivars with high antioxidant activities applicable in the formulation of functional food products. The results of tests on the presence of yeasts and molds in cornstarch [AD ‘IPOK’ Zrenjanin, 2007-2008, made at the time when previous Regulations were valid] were analyzed in terms of bioindicative values of microfungi as indicators of quality and safety of raw material or final food products. Microbiological analysis was used to detect the presence of a number of microorganisms MMI-0001, and a questionnaire was designed at the Department of Public Health in Zrenjanin town (Republic of Serbia), where the anal­yses were done, regarding the microbiological tests on starch. In order to rationalize the analyses and make them more economical, several areas of product quality control (water, food, raw materials, space) were recommended either to be excluded or regarded as optional. Thus, analysis of presence of microfungi as indicators of product quality was categorized as optional. The results obtained from this research suggest a different conclusion because the bacteria in the samples indicated ˮmicrobiologically“, namely bacteriologically, safe samples of food, while, on the contrary, the presence of some microfungi as distinct xerophilous or xerotolerant microorganisms, indicated that the food was mycologically non-safe. The obtained data are crucial for questioning the decision to exclude the earlier required (mycological) analysis of the samples (in the production of starch, or end products, etc.) and categorize such analyses in new Regulations as optional, depending on the manufacturer’s preference. Bioindicative values of microfungi as indicators of the quality of starch, clearly point to the shortsightedness of the new Regulations on food hygiene and safety, where tests on certain microorganisms (in this case, yeasts and molds) are not legally defined as mandatory, but the Law leaves manufacturers a possibility to choose (or not to choose) the testing and frequency of testing on the presence (absence) of microorganisms, which can be risky, both in the production and marketing of the finial products. Phenazines, secondary metabolites of fluorescent Pseudomonas, represent a group of heterocyclic nitrogen-containing compounds showing a broad spectrum of antibiotic properties. Phenazines producing fluorescent Pseudomonas species are studied extensively for their application in plant disease management. In this study, we examined the antifungal activity of different indigenous Pseudomonas isolates (Q16, B25 and PS2) against the phytopathogenic fungus Alternaria tenuissima, which had infected cardoon (Cynara cardunculus L., Asteraceae). An in vitro experiment demonstrated the antifungal activity of selected indigenous isolates. In addition, an in vivo experiment under gnotobiotic conditions showed suppression of C. cardunculus disease caused by A. tenuissima. The quantification of phenazines revealed significant amounts of phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA) and 2-hydroxy-phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (2-OH-PCA). PCR analysis confirmed the presence of PCA genes in all examined indigenous Pseudomonas isolates. Based on our results, we assume that these Pseudomonas isolates have potential in controlling plant diseases caused by A. tenuissima. [Projekat Ministarstva nauke Republike Srbije, br. With the onset of political overturn in Serbia in 2000, the process of the ideological reconfiguration of public places was simultaneously being put in motion. One of the most prominent means of this endeavor was naming and renaming of urban space, primarily of streets and squares, but also treatment of existing memorial sites and monuments and commissioning and erection of new ones. These undertakings were especially prominent in Serbia’s capital Belgrade. Such processes were opposed several times by certain political parties and groups which organized street-actions of counter-naming of Belgrade’s thoroughfares and campaigns against newly designated public monuments, and power-play and identity politics of such proceedings will be commented on here. This paper will discuss practices of several artistic and political groups which carried out unofficial street-renaming actions and performances, or discussed and opposed proposed new memorials. By (re)naming certain urban spaces, hegemonic political coalitions are trying to construct significant symbolic places, while oppositional counter-actions are seeking to overtake those same places and reinterpret them. This paper will attempt to sum up and inquire into the ideological politics of official memory discourses and artistic and political counter-politics and actions of opposition or alternative commemoration.

Oxidative stress and antioxidative defense system activity were studied in buckwheat leaves after complete submergence and re-aeration. The levels of H2O2 and lipid peroxidation were found to be significantly higher in stressed than in untreated buckwheat leaves. Enzymes catalyzing the degradation of H2O2 and peroxides were shown to participate actively, whereas superoxide dismutase did not take part in the buckwheat leaf response to flooding stress. The most prominent increase in antioxidative enzyme activities was noticed upon return to air, when the strongest oxidative stress occurred and the need for antioxidative defense was the greatest.

In spite of the great nutritive and pharmacological potentials of buckwheat, data about the abiotic stress tolerance of this plant species are very limited. The aim of this work was to analyze the biochemical and molecular response of buckwheat plants in the middle vegetative phase against short- and long-term salt stress. Changes in relative water content, level of lipid peroxidation, content and localization of H2O2 as well as changes in antioxidative enzyme activity and expression of ubiquitin and dehydrins, were investigated. Reasons for observed buckwheat salt stress sensitivity as well as possibilities for enhancing stress tolerance are discussed.

A lucky find of 2,572 charred pea (Pisum sativum L) seeds in a single archaeobotanical sample from the hill fort settlement Hissar near Leskovac represents a unique example in Bronze / Iron Age research in South East Europe. Another mass storage of bitter vetch (Vicia ervilia (L) Willd) from the same site and period (Brnjica cultural group, beginning of the Iron Age in the Morava valley) confirms a long tradition of the city of Leskovac region as a pulse crop production centre in modern Serbia. Both pulse storages were almost pure with small amount of admixture from other crops mainly cereals, other pulses, such as lentil (Lens culinaris Medik) and broad bean (Vicia faba L), and oil/fibre plants. Both pulses were cultivated as main crops and were stored separately.

The extracts were prepared from the samples of 3,200-year-old charred pea and bitter vetch seeds from the site of Hissar near Leskovac, South Serbia, using two different DNA extraction procedures. We used CTAB method with some modification and obtained low quantity of ancient DNA in comparison with the second method used - commercial available kit. After the extraction, a whole genome amplification using Phi29 DNA polymerase was performed. The amplified DNAs were used for PCR reaction using primers for 26S rDNA gene, which is located on the nuclear genome. The single band corresponding to 26S rDNA fragment from modern relatives was obtained. We conclude that DNA from charred pea and vetch seed can be extracted and used for further archaeobotanical analysis at the molecular level.

Aspartic proteinase gene (FeAP12) has been isolated from the cDNA library of developing buckwheat seeds. Analysis of its deduced amino acid sequence showed that it resembled the structure and shared high homology with typical plant aspartic proteinases (AP) characterized by the presence of a plant-specific insert (PSI), unique among APs. It was shown that FeAP12 mRNA was not present in the leaves, roots, steam and flowers, but was seed-specifically expressed. Moreover, the highest levels of FeAP12 expression were observed in the early stages of seed development, therefore suggesting its potential role in nucellar degradation.

This paper discusses the politics of street names in Belgrade since the beginning of 1990s until today. Given the central place of the capital city in the symbolic geography of the nation, subsequent cultural influences of the capitals' 'city text overcomes its actual scale. The past fifteen years of the 'toponymical transition' are characterized by several phases and specifics in commemoration and de-commemoration of various public symbols both in the contents and means of such identity re-construction. Being mostly consistent, the de-commemoration of themes and persons connected with the related historical period and ideology is usually achieved through revision (without restitution) of street names, and also through identity politics which initiate a politically opportune transfer of toponyms in the symbolic center-periphery relation of the city (and national) text.

Together with appreciable inheritance of ethno-centric discourses about Europe and a lack of clear public communication about European integrations Serbia, largely gripped by the process of globalization and irreversible reforms of social system, is constituting its cultural identity in the light of new relations in Europe. The content of cultural notions about Serbia and Europe that Belgrade students have can point to the direction, dynamics and perception of Europe and symbolic self-constituting of our society in the wider framework.

Background. Rupture of papillary muscle generally happens during acute myocardial infarction and is the cause of acute mitral regurgitation, pulmonary oedema, so it should be promptly recognized and managed. Case report. A patient, 52 year-old, was admitted to the Thoracic Department with fever, general weakness, dyspnea and cough as a case of suspected pneumonia. Two days before the admission he was treated with antibiotics. At thoracic ward, his clinical status got serious and he transferred to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as pulmonary oedema. At the time of admission to ICU the patient was seriously ill with tachycardia, tachydyspnea, orthopnea and cyanosis image. Auscultatory, he showed pulmonal stasis at both sides and a tachyarrhythmic action, with a systolic murmur 5/6 grade above the mitral valve. Echocardiography showed grave mitral regurgitation with prolapsus of posterior leaflet with suspected chordal rupture. At coronarography no significant lesions of coronary arteries were found. After hemodynamic stabilization the patient was operated. During the operation, Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) examination showed a rupture of the head of the posteromedial papillary muscle. He was surgically treated with atypical quadrantectomy of posterior leaflet with homologous pericardial patch anuloplasty. Conclusion. The recognition of acute mitral regurgitation caused by the papillary muscle rupture and prompt surgical treatment is of vital interest for the survival of patients.

Isolated pistils of distylous buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) were treated with protease inhibitors (PMSF, pepstatin A, and antipain). Pistils were cross- or self- pollinated, and growth of pollen tubes was observed under a fluorescence microscope. Treatments with all inhibitors suppressed inhibition of self-pollen tube growth, suggesting that activity of proteases is involved in rejection of self-pollen during the SI response.

A novel type of aspartic proteinase gene was isolated from the cDNA library of developing buckwheat seeds. This cDNA, FeAPL1, encoded an AP-like protein lacking the plant-specific insert (PSI) domain characteristic of typical plant aspartic proteinases. In addition the corresponding genomic fragment was isolated. It is demonstrated that this gene does not contain introns. Since bioinformatics analysis of the Arabidopsis genome showed that most potential AP genes are intronless and PSI-less, it appears that "atypical" is an inappropriate word for that class of AP. Isolation of this specific buckwheat gene among the small group of those isolated from other plant species provides a new perspective on the diversity of AP family members in plants. .
