This paper reports on the performance analysis of an embankment over a soft soil deposit during construction. The study section is part of the duplication of the Brazilian federal highway, BR 470, a major infrastructure project that crosses several soft clay deposits in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. To guarantee stability and accelerate the landfill consolidation, the project provided geotechnical solutions as follows: basal reinforcement with geogrids, equilibrium berms, stage constructions of the landfill (slow construction), preloading and prefabricated vertical drains. The performance during field construction was mostly evaluated through instrumentation considering the evolution of horizontal displacements (distortion and distortion rates) and the Asaoka method to evaluate the stabilisation of settlements. Given the limitations of the methods used for control during construction, and a discrepancy between field settlements and original project predictions, the soil profile and geotechnical parameters were revaluated during construction and used in a revised performance analysis. Some important considerations were observed from this back-analysis that could have been used to modify the construction process during execution. In addition, to analyse the effects of the inherited variability, a sensitivity analysis to determine levels of possible settlements and time of consolidation was performed.

To compare the perception of disease activity (DA) between adult patients with systemic autoimmune myopathies (SAMs) and their physicians, and analyse possible sources of discordance.This cross-sectional study included 75 patients with SAMs. Patients and physicians rated the global DA on a 0-10 cm visual analogue scale. A discrepancy score was calculated by subtracting physician assessment from patient assessment. Three groups were defined: (I) no discrepancy: difference within -2.0 to +2.0; (II) negative discrepancy (ND): difference-2.0 (patient underrated DA in relation to physcian); (III) positive discrepancy (PD): difference+2.0 (patient overrated DA in relation to physician). Logistic regression was used to identify predictors of discordance.Discordance in patient-physician assessment of DA was found in 21 (28%) cases. ND was observed in 3 (4%), PD in 18 (24%), and no discrepancy in 54 (72%) assessments. Due to the small number, ND cases were excluded from the analysis. PD was associated with older age, personal history of depression, past joint involvement, higher MMT-8 and lower extramuscular DA. In the regression model, for each additional year of age, the chance of PD increases, on average, by 9% (OR 1.09; 95%CI 1.01-1.17, p=0.034). Personal history of depression increases the chance of PD by 829% (OR 9.29; 95%CI 1.52-56.89, p=0.016).Almost 30% of patients had discordance in DA assessment from their physicians. The majority of them overrated their DA. These patients tend to be older and are more likely to have personal history of depression, past joint involvement, and milder disease.

Incremental control strategies have been proposed recently to reduce the dependence on the aircraft model. However, the technique still requires modeling the actuator effectiveness, which depends on inertial and aerodynamic parameters. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to analyze the robustness of the strategy regarding these parameters. This work focuses on evaluating the robustness of an incremental backstepping strategy applied for automatic control of a Boeing 747 (B747). A sensitivity analysis is carried out to quantify the impact of inertial parameters and flight condition in the input effectiveness, whose results are used to define scheduling strategies for the incremental controller. A robustness analysis is then performed using a B747 simulator applying different maneuvers in several flight conditions. The flight performance is evaluated according to the military standard MIL-DTL-9490E. Results show that the proposed controller is robust to mismatches in the input effectiveness model, evidencing that even without using a scheduling strategy the controller is able to perform within the requirements specified in the standard.

Objectives To document the work situation, the work ability and the expectation of returning to work among adult patients with systemic autoimmune myopathies (SAMs), and to identify the factors associated with each of these outcomes. Methods Cross-sectional study. The work situation (performing paid work vs out of work) was ascertained via a structured questionnaire. For those who were working, we applied the Work Ability Index (WAI; scale 7–49); and for those who were out of work, we applied the Return-to-Work Self-Efficacy questionnaire (RTW-SE; scale 11–66). Results Of the 75 patients with SAMs included, 33 (44%) were doing paid work and 42 (56%) were out of work. The work situation was independently associated with physical function, assessed by the Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI). A 1-point increase in the HAQ-DI (scale 0–3) decreased the chance of doing paid work by 66% (95% CI: 0.16, 0.74; P = 0.007). Patients performing paid work had a mean WAI of 33.5 (6.9). The following variables were associated with a decrease in the WAI score in the regression model: female sex (−5.04), diabetes (−5.94), fibromyalgia (−6.40), fatigue (−4.51) and severe anxiety (−4.59). Among those out of work, the mean RTW-SE was 42.8 (12.4). Cutaneous manifestations and >12 years of education were associated with an average increase of 10.57 and 10.9 points, respectively, in the RTW-SE. A 1-point increase in the HAQ-DI decreased the RTW-SE by 4.69 points. Conclusion Our findings highlight the poor work participation in a well-characterized sample of working-age patients with SAMs. Strategies to improve work-related outcomes in these patients are urgently needed.

Post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (also known as long COVID) refers to the persistence of COVID-19 symptoms for at least four weeks following the acute phase of the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection. This study aims to provide a narrative review of the musculoskeletal manifestations of long COVID-19. While prevalence rates varied among studies, chronic fatigue, myalgia, arthralgia, and arthritis were consistently reported as the most common manifestations. Notably, a positive correlation was observed between the length of hospital stay and the likelihood of experiencing long COVID-19 symptoms. Moreover, women were found to be more susceptible to this condition than men.

Actuation failure is one of the causes of loss of control in flight accidents. Aircraft usually have multiple redundant actuators to mitigate failures, and Failure Detection and Isolation Systems (FDIS) are used to diagnose failures and reconfigure software/hardware to enhance safety. However, the large number of redundant actuators interferes with the FDIS. To detect and isolate failures in fixed-wing aircraft with redundant actuators, this work proposes the combined use of two different strategies of the Two-Stage Kalman Filter. A Supervisory Loop is included using heuristics and statistics to diagnose the actuators, and a Feed-Forward Differential is implemented to improve the isolation process without interfering with the aircraft flight. The solution is evaluated in the detection of an aileron failure in a Boeing 747 simulator.

The knowledge of tire-ground interaction forces is valuable for intelligent vehicles technologies. However, tire forces transducers are expensive and not suitable for ordinary passenger cars. An alternative is to estimate these forces using less sophisticated sensors. This paper presents a new delayed interconnected cascade-observer structure to reconstruct the forces acting on each tire in all directions. The addition of delayed interconnections overcomes the mutual dependence problem in the cascade estimator. Observers are developed based on nonlinear vehicle dynamic models. The Extended Kalman Filter and the Unscented Kalman Filter algorithms are applied for comparison purposes. Two experimental data are used to validate the estimator: a driving in ordinary urban streets and a high-speed slalom maneuver in a banked road. The results are compared with force measurements obtained with transducers and with an existing estimator from the literature.

Physalis angulata L. is an American species with edible fruits that stands out for having high nutritional and pharmaceutical value. The species is found in almost the entire Brazilian territory but the consumption of its fruits is not widespread. Genetic improvement is one of the main factors that can make P. angulata a crop in Brazil. The aim of this work was to evaluate the existence of heterosis and heterobeltiosis for morphoagronomic descriptors, to estimate correlations, and to select the best hybrids in P. angulata in a full diallel with five accession. Twenty plant, fruit and seed descriptors were evaluated, and plant height and total soluble solids showed significant genetic variation. Positive heterobeltiosis for total soluble solids was observed in hybrids Pi x G53, Can x Pi and Can x LG, while negative heterobeltiosis for plant height was observed in G53 x LG, Pi x Laj e Can x Laj hybrids. Heterosis was also observed for both descriptors. Using selection indexes, Can x G53, Can x LG, Pi x G53, Can x Pi and G53 x Pi were selected as the best hybrids, expressing smaller plant height and higher total soluble solids.

This paper presents an optimal planning/guidance approach for a UAV point-to-point navigation in 2D, under wind influence, with the imposition of a general desired airspeed profile. A cost function weighting the travel time and the control effort is minimized through the Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle. An analytical expression for the optimal heading to assure minimum-time flight is also derived. A general wind case in constrained path navigation is solved through an iterative procedure, using artificial potential fields.

Nesse sentido, é importante avaliar as propriedades dos materiais do sistema CAD-CAM principalmente quando submetidos a diferentes tratamentos durante sua queima. Sendo assim o propósito foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes tipos de protocolos de queima de glaze sobre a dureza e rugosidade superficial de cerâmicas CAD-CAM. Foram utilizados 3 tipos de blocos cerâmicos para confecção dos espécimes: dissilicato de lítio (DIS), feldspática reforçada com leucita (LEU) e silicato de lítio reforçada com zircônia (SLZ). O tratamento térmico foi realizado nos grupos experimentais da seguinte maneira: glaze convencional (GC) o tratamento seguiu as orientações do fabricante, os espécimes são mantidos por 820º, 790º e 840º graus centígrados por 7minutos, 1minuto e 8 minutos, para os materiais (DIS), (LEU) e (SLZ) e então o forno é abeto abruptamente; glaze extendido (GE) os espécimes foram mantidos durante 15 minutos em temperatura máxima de queima e o forno permaneceu fechado até atingir a temperatura de 200ºC para ser aberto; grupo controle (GP) - polimento com kit de borrachas abrasivas. No total, foram constituídos 9 grupos (n=10). A rugosidade superficial (Ra) de cada espécime foi aferida ao final da queima do glaze e polimento. Para avaliação da dureza, foi realizado teste de microdureza Vickers (VHN) após os protocolos de queima e polimento. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que o GE resultou em maior lisura superficial para o material (SLZ). Considerando o material LEU, o GC resultou em maiores valores de Ra comparado aos demais grupos, entretanto a Ra obtida no GE só diferiu para com o GC - LEU. Para os valores de VHN, o grupo DIS - GP que recebeu polimento não diferiu significativamente em relação a todos os outros grupos. No caso da SLZ- GE foi observado maior valore médio de VHN quando comparado aos demais tratamentos e materiais estudados. Digital dentistry has been widely applied and restorations performed using CAD-CAM systems are increasingly used by dentists. In this sense, it is important to evaluate the properties of the materials of the CAD-CAM system, especially when subjected to different treatments during firing. Therefore, the purpose was to evaluate the effect of different types of glaze firing protocols on the hardness and surface roughness of CAD-CAM ceramics. Three types of ceramic blocks were used to make the specimens: lithium disilicate (DIS), feldspar reinforced with leucite (LEU) and lithium silicate reinforced with zirconia (SLZ). The thermal treatment was carried out in the experimental groups as follows: conventional glaze (GC) the treatment followed the manufacturer's guidelines, the specimens are maintained for 820º, 790º and 840º centigrade for 7 minutes, 1 minute and 8 minutes, for the materials (DIS ), (LEU) and (SLZ) and then the oven is abruptly spruce; extended glaze (GE) the specimens were kept for 15 minutes at maximum burning temperature and the oven remained closed until reaching a temperature of 200ºC to be opened; control group (GP) - polishing with abrasive rubbers kit. In total, 9 groups were formed (n = 10). The surface roughness (Ra) of each specimen was measured at the end of the glaze burning and polishing. To assess the hardness, Vickers microhardness test (VHN) was carried out after the burning and polishing protocols. The results obtained demonstrated that the GE resulted in a greater surface smoothness for the material (SLZ). Considering the LEU material, the CG resulted in higher Ra values compared to the other groups, however the Ra obtained in the GE only differed from the GC - LEU. For VHN values, the group DIS - GP that received polishing did not differ significantly in relation to all other groups. In the case of SLZ-GE, a higher mean VHN value was observed when compared to the other treatments and materials studied. CAPES: 001

With advances in incremental non-linear flight control, new challenges and possibilities for incorporating efficient flight envelope protections arise. Investigation of a phase plane based command and virtual control limiting pitch angle protection in the reference model of a cascaded incremental backstepping controller is performed for a commercial aircraft model. This provides an almost model free design of a combined flight control law and envelope protection. Verification through simulation shows that accurate predictable response behaviour is obtained close to the limit, which permits a protection that minimizes the interference into the nominal control.

Aircraft safety heavily depends on the flight control performance, which usually requires good model knowledge. Sensor-based controllers, known as incremental controllers, have been filling this gap by substituting state-only-dependent dynamics knowledge by accelerations measurements. However, these solutions have only dealt, so far, with generalized actuation, making the control allocation a posterior step to the control design. This paper explicitly considers actuation redundancies within the design of an Incremental Backstepping controller applied to the attitude tracking of an overactuated fixed-wing aircraft. A solution using the Monroe-Penrose Pseudo-inverse is proposed to allocate the control effort. A Washout filter is introduced to retrieve the trim solution during straight-and-level flight. The closed-loop performance is evaluated with a Boeing 747 aircraft simulation including possible actuation failures.

Hepatic involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may be due to the disease itself, but is most often associated with the use of hepatotoxic drugs, hepatic steatosis and coexistence of viral hepatitis. Cases of Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) associated with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) have been reported in adults with lupus. The authors report a rare case of juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (jSLE) associated with APS who presented BCS and subsequent progression to large regenerative nodules and hepatocellular carcinoma.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE To review articles that evaluated the prevalence of Raynaud’s phenomenon of occupational origin. METHODS The search for articles was carried out in the Medline (via PubMed), Embase, Web of Science, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and Latin America and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (Lilacs) databases. RESULTS 64 articles were obtained from the electronic search; 18 articles met the eligibility criteria. All studies discussed the exposure to vibrations in the upper limbs. In 6 of them, the thermal issue was directly or indirectly addressed. No studies have addressed exposure to vinyl chloride. CONCLUSIO In general, a higher prevalence of Raynaud’s phenomenon was found among vibratory tool operators compared to non-exposed workers, with an increase in the number of cases the higher the level of vibration and the time of exposure. Cold is a triggering and aggravating factor of the Raynaud phenomenon and seems to play an important role in the emergence of vascular manifestations of the hand-arm vibration syndrome. RESUMO OBJETIVO Realizar um estudo de revisão dos artigos que avaliaram a prevalência do fenômeno de Raynaud de origem ocupacional. MÉTODOS A busca pelos artigos foi realizada nas bases de dados Medline (via PubMed), Embase, Web of Science, Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SciELO) e Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (Lilacs). RESULTADOS Sessenta e quatro artigos foram obtidos a partir da busca eletrônica, dos quais 18 cumpriram os critérios de elegibilidade. Todos os estudos discutiram sobre a exposição a vibrações localizadas em membros superiores. Em seis deles, a questão térmica foi direta ou indiretamente abordada. Nenhum estudo abordou a exposição ao cloreto de vinila. CONCLUSÃO De maneira geral, constatou-se maior prevalência do fenômeno de Raynaud entre operadores de ferramentas vibratórias em comparação aos não expostos, com aumento do número de casos quanto maior o nível de vibração e tempo de exposição. O frio é fator desencadeante e agravante do fenômeno de Raynaud e parece exercer papel importante para o surgimento das manifestações vasculares da síndrome de vibração de mãos e braços.

In this work, a custom-made reactor was developed to treat batches of short wood fibers with plasma. Three different plasma gases were tested: air, methane (CH4) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). The latter showed very promising results and was therefore used to prepare additional samples to determine the effects of plasma treatment and conditions on the wood fiber surface properties as well as the adhesion in a polypropylene matrix. As a result, composites made out of fibers plasma treated for 40 minutes at 60 watt demonstrated an increase in the elastic modulus of more than 25%. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs of the composites' fracture surfaces indicated stronger interactions between treated fibers and the matrix. The incorporation of fluorine on treated fiber surfaces, mostly in covalent bonds with carbon, was clearly observed and analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The water contact angle on wood specimens treated under similar conditions displayed hydrophobic to superhydrophobic behavior, with contact angles exceeding 130°. POLYM. No processo de beneficiamento apenas 4% do conteúdo da folha do sisal é aproveitado como fibra dura. Com os materiais restantes são gerados resíduos sólidos e líquidos, os quais representam respectivamente 16% e 80% do total, e são usualmente descartados.Os resíduos líquidos do sisal são considerados como alternativa de bioherbicidas e de bioinseticidas nas culturas do milho e do algodão (ABADIA, 2014).Além do sisal, a palma forrageira (Opuntia fícus-indica Mill e Nopalea cochenillifera Salm – Dyck) é extremamente importante para a economia da região Semiárida, sendo a principal fonte de alimentação da pecuária nos períodos de seca (MOURA, 2012).Dentre as pragas que afetam a planta, a cochonilhas de escamas (Diaspis echinocacti Bouché 1833) é uma dos principais obstáculos para a expansão da cultura da palma forrageira no Brasil, por que tornam cultivos inviáveis e devastam a produção, causa dano espoliativo, sugando a seiva das plantas e causando clorose aos cladódios, expondo a planta à micro-organismos que os apodrecem, levando à sua queda e morte (SOUZA et al., 2014; ROCHA, 2012; MOURA, 2012).Uma das perspectivas no Brasil é a ampliação da sua área plantada, diante do agravante das mudanças climáticas. Então, a mercê disso espera-se que os problemas fitossanitários se tornem proporcionalmente maiores, com o aumento na frequência e severidade do ataque de pragas e doenças (ROCHA, 2012; VASCONCELOS, et al., 2009). Diante dessas iminentes ameaças, se faz necessário a buscar por alternativas estratégicas para o controle e amortização de problemas futuros, com a utilização de recursos sustentáveis.Este estudo investigou o desempenho do resíduo líquido de sisal no controle de cochonilha de escamas na palma forrageira.
