Current medicine might be greatly enhanced by the ability to in vivo control and monitor neurons using opsins/phytochromes expressed in neural cells. The fundamental challenge with non-invasive neural cell activity regulation is a high absorption of visible light into biological tissues. This drawback could be mitigated by the photoconversion of phytochromes in spectral ranges with higher tissue transparency. In this study, we first demonstrated two-photon Pr-Pfr conversion of monomeric phytochrome at 1.2 µm wavelength. We did a comparison of linear and nonlinear conversion of truncated DrBphP bacterial phytochromes. This work provides a structured understanding of the optical properties of the dimer and monomer of phytochrome as well as their potential for use in optogenetics.

In this paper, we present a new approach for the enhancement of pulsed terahertz (THz) generation in quantum dot (QD) based photoconductive antennas (PCA). We demonstrate the benefits of the combination of a QD substrate based PCA and an interdigitated electrodes topology which allows the photocarriers to reach the antenna terminals in a quasi-ballistic regime and immediately contribute to the THz emission. A 50-fold increase in the generated THz power is observed. Such enhancement is made possible by unique combination of QD substrate properties, such as very high electric and thermal breakdown ruggedness, high carrier mobility, and yet short carrier lifetimes, compared to typical low temperature grown materials. We expect this solution to become favourable for development of powerful compact THz emitters.

This paper presents clinical results of wireless portable dynamic light scattering sensors that implement laser Doppler flowmetry signal processing. It has been verified that the technology can detect microvascular changes associated with diabetes and ageing in volunteers. Studies were conducted primarily on wrist skin. Wavelet continuous spectrum calculation was used to analyse the obtained time series of blood perfusion recordings with respect to the main physiological frequency ranges of vasomotions. In patients with type 2 diabetes, the area under the continuous wavelet spectrum in the endothelial, neurogenic, myogenic, and cardio frequency ranges showed significant diagnostic value for the identification of microvascular changes. Aside from spectral analysis, autocorrelation parameters were also calculated for microcirculatory blood flow oscillations. The groups of elderly volunteers and patients with type 2 diabetes, in comparison with the control group of younger healthy volunteers, showed a statistically significant decrease of the normalised autocorrelation function in time scales up to 10 s. A set of identified parameters was used to test machine learning algorithms to classify the studied groups of young controls, elderly controls, and diabetic patients. Our conclusion describes and discusses the classification metrics that were found to be most effective.

Edge-emitting mode-locked quantum-dot (QD) lasers are compact, highly efficient sources for the generation of picosecond and femtosecond pulses and/or broad frequency combs. They provide direct electrical control and footprints down to few millimeters. Their broad gain bandwidths (up to 50 nm for ground to ground state transitions as discussed below, with potential for increase to more than >200 nm by overlapping ground and excited state band transitions) allow for wavelength-tuning and generation of pico- and femtosecond laser pulses over a broad wavelength range. In the last two decades, mode-locked QD laser have become promising tools for low-power applications in ultrafast photonics. In this article, we review the development and the state-of-the-art of edge-emitting mode-locked QD lasers. We start with a brief introduction on QD active media and their uses in lasers, amplifiers, and saturable absorbers. We further discuss the basic principles of mode-locking in QD lasers, including theory of nonlinear phenomena in QD waveguides, ultrafast carrier dynamics, and mode-locking methods. Different types of mode-locked QD laser systems, such as monolithic one- and two-section devices, external-cavity setups, two-wavelength operation, and master-oscillator power-amplifier systems, are discussed and compared. After presenting the recent trends and results in the field of mode-locked QD lasers, we briefly discuss the application areas.

Advances in the development of ultra-compact semiconductor lasers have opened up new possibilities for the development of wearable devices implementing biophotonic technologies, such as laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) and fluorescence spectroscopy (FS). This work is aimed to evaluate the correlation between diagnostic parameters simultaneously registered by a newly developed wearable device and a standard bedside fiber-based technique. Experimental studies with healthy volunteers using the occlusion test showed a high correlation between the parameters recorded by the two devices.,,,,,,,,.

In nature, sensory photoreceptors underlie diverse spatiotemporally precise and generally reversible biological responses to light. Photoreceptors also serve as genetically encoded agents in optogenetics to control by light organismal state and behavior. Phytochromes represent a superfamily of photoreceptors that transition between states absorbing red light (Pr) and far-red light (Pfr), thus expanding the spectral range of optogenetics to the near-infrared range. Although light of these colors exhibits superior penetration of soft tissue, the transmission through bone and skull is poor. To overcome this fundamental challenge, we explore the activation of a bacterial phytochrome by a femtosecond laser emitting in the 1 μm wavelength range. Quantum chemical calculations predict that bacterial phytochromes possess substantial two-photon absorption cross sections. In line with this notion, we demonstrate that the photoreversible Pr↔Pfr conversion is driven by two-photon absorption at wavelengths between 1170 and 1450 nm. The Pfr yield was highest for wavelengths between 1170 and 1280 nm and rapidly plummeted beyond 1300 nm. By combining two-photon activation with bacterial phytochromes, we lay the foundation for enhanced spatial resolution in optogenetics and unprecedented penetration through bone, skull and soft tissue.

It is well known that a light beam transforms into a hollow light cylinder after passing along one of the optical axes of a biaxial crystal. This optical phenomenon is known as conical refraction (CR) and fascinates researchers for almost two centuries. The characteristic features of CR find a number of practical applications in optical manipulation, polarization metrology, and singular optics to name a few [1] . However, these seem to be hindered by the lack of intuitive understanding and prediction of the CR transverse intensity pattern. This problem was partially solved by expressing the CR field as a superposition of the Bessel-Gaussian (BG) beams [2] .

We investigate the fluorescence characteristics of a purely Ce-doped silica fiber and demonstrate broad-bandwidth fluorescence across the visible and near-infrared. The Ce-doped fiber is fabricated using standard modified chemical vapor deposition technology. Trace metal analysis by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry confirmed the purity of Ce-doping. The Ce valence state of 3+ was revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The optimum pump wavelength for the broadest luminescence from a fiber is scanned between 405 nm to 440 nm wavelength of diode lasers operating under continuous-wave regime. The strongest pump absorption is observed at the wavelength of 405 nm. Variation of pump power and fiber length results in the demonstration of broad-bandwidth fluorescence with spectral widths up to 301 nm (at -10 dB). The measured fluorescence spectra cover the wavelength range from ∼458 nm to ∼819 nm with spectral power densities of up to 2.4 nW/nm.

We report on the characterization and analysis of a GaN-based distributed feedback laser diode (DFB-LD) with 3 rd-order laterally etched sidewall gratings centered at a wavelength of 420 nm. We also compare the device parameters with two commonly used Fabry-Perot (FP) devices operating at 450 nm and 520 nm. Intrinsic properties of the devices were extracted, including damping factor, carrier and photon lifetimes, modulation efficiency, differential gain, and parasitic capacitance. These parameters showed that the DFB exhibits a lower damping rate and parasitic capacitance while demonstrating a higher modulation efficiency, indicating that the DFB shows good potential for communications applications. Additionally, spectral linewidth of a GaN DFB is reported. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first demonstration of parameter extraction and spectral linewidth measurement for GaN-based DFB-LDs.

Regretfully, because of her sudden demise, Assoc. Prof. Ekaterina Borisova is no longer amongst us. COVID-19 pulled away a brilliant scientist during the peak of her scientific career (see Fig. 1).
