Abstract

The study was conducted with a view to determine the effect of germination and metallic salts on nutritional quality, enzymes activity and their stability of three high yielding varieties of maize (Zea mays L.). The protein content of BHM-3, BHM-5 and BHM-6 were increased 22.37%, 26.48%, and 20.34% respectively at 48 hours then decreased drastically from 72-96 hours of germination. Starch content was increased maximum 29.19% in BHM-6 at 0 hours (non-germinating seeds) among the three varieties and then decreased gradually from 48-96 hours of germination. Total sugar and reducing sugar contents of BHM-3, BHM-5 and BHM-6 seeds were maximum at 96 hours than 24-72 hours of germination while BHM-3 showed boosting increase of total sugar (336.97%) due to 96 hours of germination. BHM-5 showed a tremendous increase of α-amylase (189.83%) and protease (144.44%) activity whereas BHM-6 showed maximum invertase activity (175.27%) at 48 hours then decreased gradually from 72-96 hours of germination. The activities of enzymes were increased in presence of metallic salts such as Ca2+, Mg2+, and Mn2+ while Fe2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ inhibited the activities moderately.

Abstract

Effects of two nitrogen (N) sources on dry matter (DM) yield and nutritive value of Napier grass were evaluated. The nitrogen (N) fertiliser (at rate of 300 kg N ha?1 year?1) was applied by dividing the terraces of a hill under two treatments: T1 (urea) and T2 (goat manure). There were three replicates of each treatment arranged within three blocks in a completely randomised design. Grass was cut at about 60?day interval. In the first to fourth harvests, grass receiving manure had higher plant height than those with urea application. Grass receiving manure had higher DM yield than urea in almost all of the cuttings. In the fourth harvest, grass receiving urea contained higher DM and organic matter (OM) than manure. Similar result was found for fifth harvest where urea gave higher crude protein (CP) than manure. Irrespective of harvesting frequencies, average DM, OM, CP and neutral detergent fibre contents were not significantly different between grasses fertilised with manure and urea. In conclusion, manure is recommended for economical cultivation of Napier grass on terrace of hill.

16. Effect of repeated laparoscopic ovum pick-up on yield and quality of oocytes in goats

Abstract

Laparoscopic ovum pick-up (LOPU) is a less invasive surgical technique for oocyte recovery from antral follicles seen as ?pimple-like? protrusion on the ovarian surface. LOPU can be repeated several times without ovarian damage or reducing the doe?s fertility. This study investigated the effect of LOPU cycles on yield and quality of oocytes in goats. Three repeated cycles (oocyte retrieval 1 (OR1), oocyte retrieval 2 (OR2) and oocyte retrieval 3 (OR3)) of LOPU procedure were performed on 16 donor Boer crossbred does. The oocytes obtained were classified based on cumulus oocytes complexes (COC) layer criterion into 5 grades: grades A, B, C, D and E. OR1 gave a higher number of quality oocytes (P0.05) among the OR cycles. The number of grade A oocytes obtained in OR1 and OR2 was significantly higher (P 0.05) than for grades A and B oocytes with mean oocyte recovery rate of 153 versus 106 and 91%, respectively. In conclusion, LOPU is a reliable procedure to provide consistently high quality oocytes of grades A, B and C and its usage can be repeated on the same donor doe for up to 3 times. However, the number of oocytes is reduced following each oocyte retrieval cycle.
