Foodborne pathogens may cause foodborne illness, which is among the major health problems worldwide. Since the therapeutic options for the treatment of the disease are becoming limited as a result of antibacterial resistance, there is an increasing interest to search for new alternatives of antibacterial. Bioactive essential oils from Curcuma sp become potential sources of novel antibacterial substances. The antibacterial activity of Curcuma heyneana essential oil (CHEO) was evaluated against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Shigella sonnei, and Bacillus cereus. The principal constituents of CHEO are ar-turmerone, β-turmerone, α-zingiberene, α-terpinolene, 1,8-cineole, and camphor. CHEO exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity against E. coli with a MIC of 3.9 µg/mL, which is comparable to that of tetracycline. The combination of CHEO (0.97 µg/mL) and tetracycline (0.48 µg/mL) produced a synergistic effect with a FICI of 0.37. Time-kill assay confirmed that CHEO enhanced the activity of tetracycline. The mixture disrupted membrane permeability of E. coli and induced cell death. CHEO at MIC of 3.9 and 6.8 µg/mL significantly reduced the formation of biofilm in E. coli. The findings suggest that CHEO has the potential to be an alternative source of antibacterial agents against foodborne pathogens, particularly E. coli. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The antioxidant potential of Graptophyllum pictum (wungu leaves), an indigenous shrub plant extensively used in traditional medicine in Indonesia, was investigated in this study. The research focused on a comprehensive evaluation of total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) across various plant parts, including roots, stems, and flowers, which had been underexplored in prior studies. The ethanol extract derived from wungu flowers and leaves demonstrated notable antioxidant potential, characterized by elevated TPC (12.22 ± 0.31 mg GAE/g DW) and FRAP (37.73 ± 1.08 µmol TEAC/g DW) in the ethanol extract of wungu flowers. Similarly, the ethanol extract of wungu leaves showcased a substantial TFC (2.31 ± 0.18 mg QE/g DW) and DPPH (1.12 ± 0.05 µmol TEAC/g DW), surpassing other parts of the wungu plant in the same or different extracts. These findings suggested that ethanol extracts were a promising foundation for herbal medicines with antioxidant properties, highlighting their potential applications in plant breeding programs. Furthermore, the correlation data underscored the significance of the ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts, revealing a robust correlation between TPC, TFC, and FRAP compared to the n-hexane extract. Introduction: Andaliman (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC), which belongs to the Rutaceae family, is a plant widely used as a spice in traditional Batak cuisine around the Toba region‑Samosir, North Sumatra. The Batak people also use Z. acanthopodium to treat digestive problems, reduce pain, relieve diarrhea, as an aromatic ingredient, tonic, and increase appetite. Methods: This investigation analyzed the phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of Z. acanthopodium fruit essential oil. The phytochemical content was studied using total phenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and gas chromatography mass spectrometry, and the essential oil’s antioxidant activities were evaluated in vitro against DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS. Results: The results showed that the principal constituents of Z. acanthopodium fruit essential oil were D‑Limonene, Geranyl acetate,‑pinene, and α‑Ocimene. In addition, the TPC and TFC of the essential oil were relatively low, at 3.81 mg GAE/g sample and 11.42 mg QE/g sample, respectively. According to the DPPH assay results, the essential oil is effective as an antioxidant with an IC50 value of 28.37 ug/mL. However, the FRAP and ABTS assays did not showed antioxidant activity. The different results from antioxidant assays (DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS) may be due to the various time of conducting the assay. The DPPH assay was done immediately after the essential oil extracting process, while the FRAP and ABTS assays were done 3 months later. Although antibiotic has been frequently used for the treatment of infection, it has led to the emergence of resistant problem. Plant-derived compounds are alternative source for discovering novel therapeutics. Flavonoid is widely distributed and present in plant kingdom. This compound possessed several pharmacological properties including antibacterial. This review aims to present some information about the potency of flavonoids as antibacterial compound including their mechanism of antibacterial action as well as the relationship between their activity and flavonoid structure. The synergistic effect of flavonoids when used in combination with antibiotics against resistant bacterial is also described. Published literatures were collected from data bases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct and Scopus. Scientific papers were selected based on information of antibacterial activity of flavonoid compounds. Background: Marantodes pumilum is traditionally used for dysentery, gonorrhea, and sickness in the bones. Previous studies revealed its antibacterial and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activities. Objective: To evaluate the inhibitory effects of three M. pumilum varieties on the secretion of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- and monosodium urate crystal (MSU)-induced cytokines and plasma prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in vitro. Materials and Methods: The leaves and roots of M. pumilum var. alata (MPA), M. pumilum var. pumila (MPP), and M. pumilum var. lanceolata (MPL) were successively extracted with dichloromethane (DCM), methanol, and water. Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells and ELISA technique were used for the cytokine assay, whereas human plasma and radioimmunoassay technique were used in the PGE2 assay. Flavonoids content was determined using a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Results: DCM extract of MPL roots showed the highest inhibition of LPS-stimulated cytokine secretion with IC50 values of 29.87, 7.62, 5.84, 25.33, and 5.40 µg/mL for interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, respectively; while that of plasma PGE2 secretion was given by DCM extract of MPP roots (IC50 31.10 µg/mL). Similarly, the DCM extract of MPL roots demonstrated the highest inhibition against MSU-stimulated IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and PGE2 secretion with IC50 values of 11.2, 8.92, 12.29, 49.51, 9.60, and 31.58 µg/mL, respectively. Apigenin in DCM extracts of MPL (0.051 mg/g) and MPP (0.064 mg/g) roots could be responsible for the strong inhibitory activity against IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and PGE2. Conclusion: The results suggested that DCM extracts of MPL and MPP roots are potential anti-inflammatory agents by inhibiting the secretion of LPS- and MSU-stimulated pro-inflammatory cytokines and PGE2. • Methanol solvent was suitable to extract asiaticoside by using maceration method. • Ethanol solvent was appropriate for almost all solid-liquid extractions. • Ethanol-aqueous solution (50–80%) increases the asiaticoside extraction efficiency. • Extracting at the boiling point of the solvent increases the asiaticoside content. • Microwave-assisted extraction is the most potential method to extract asiaticoside. Asiaticoside is a promising compound of Centella asiatica. This review aims to investigate the effect of solid-liquid extraction techniques on asiaticoside yield. This research followed PRISMA guidelines. Of 361 studies identified, thirteen met inclusion criteria, and three were analyzed by meta-analysis. Qualitative findings showed that green extractions of ultrasound-assisted (UAE) and microwave-assisted (MAE) were more efficient than conventional extractions of maceration and heat-assisted (HAE). Solvent studies exhibited specific optimum solvents for each method, such as methanol for maceration and ethanol for HAE, UAE, and MAE. Meta-analysis generated findings that ethanol was more efficient than water for maceration (Zscore of 31.34) and HAE (Zscore of 27.32). HAE significantly increased the asiaticoside yield (Z score of 17.89). There was no significant difference between UAE and MAE (P -value of 0.37). In conclusion, the optimum asiaticoside extraction is afforded by using ethanol at elevated temperatures. Moreover, MAE is a potential method requiring less extraction time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
